No frills street Thai food. The boat noodles are the best in Melbourne and their desserts are yummy. Keep on coming back despite living far away.
I had the papaya salad, pad kee mao with pork, Thai milk tea and Thai pink milk. Overall everything was tasty, and the papaya salad was quite spicy.
Unfortunately it took a while for my pad kee mao to come and I had to call over a waiter, which was the only disappointing part about this restaurant.
Excellent food, friendly staff and great value for money!
A taste of authentic Thai food in Abbotsford.
They serve up amazing thai street food and I would usually have their pork noodles and they are really good.
Jinda Thai has a serious competition! This restaurant is super authentic and has excellent service, friendly staff. The claypot prawn noodles here is better than the one we had in Bangkok recommended by Mark weins. We loved All the dishes we had here. Will be back for me!
Our most favourite Thai restaurant in the area!
Friendly staff, attentive service.
Recommend: Sukiyaki noodle soup, 2 people hot pot combo, banana cake dessert
Bonus: Talad Thai supermarket nearby.
I love this place, the staff are so lovely and the pork boat noodles are to die for. Pork skewers and chicken larp are also not to be missed.
This is my most favorite Thai place in Melbourne.. I first went to this place over two years ago and I’ve returned many many times since - the taste is consistently amazing!
My favorite dish is the crispy rice salad which is crunchy and spicy. The basil and herbs give a very fresh taste to the dish.
We also had pad kee mao which was quite nice - lots of bean shoots. And the green curry was a perfect blend of spices and coconut milk.
If you’re looking for a place that dishes out great tasting Thai food consistently, look no further.. the place has gotten a lot busier than it used to be, so booking a spot is a good idea to avoid disappointment.
Haven’t been to this place for a while. We both were craving duck curry and Thai iced milk tea tonight. We ordered the chicken wings and spicy pork minced with rice .. So good :)
Having always seen this small and unassuming place packed, I was keen to try it out. I can definitely see why it’s so busy, because it is sensational! Everything was prepared with love and care, and tasted absolutely great. Particularly loved the Thai Basil and Pork stir fry. Will definitely be returning soon!
As far as good local Thai goes this is about as good as you get in Richmond but you have to order correctly. We got some pork with soft bones and it was just the junk bits of pork with a bone obviously, it was crap. Spring rolls were average but the chicken ribs and curry puffs were good. Highlights was the Penang beef and chicken green curry... excellent quality and I consider myself to be a good judge when it comes to Thai curries. Coconut rice is some of the best I’ve had. Absolutely pumping restaurant on a Wednesday night. Service was great too... 4.5
Very lovely workers. Food came out quickly. Ordered a green curry and red curry. Green curry was vegetarian. Had so much flavour however was a little bit spicy even though i had ordered mild. Also got the tofu salad, pad thai and teh tarik. Teh tarik was very sweet. Tofu salad ordered mild was also abit too spicy. Pad thai was delicious
Absolutely the best Thai restaurant in Melbourne hands down. A whole page of their menu devoted to som tam speaks for itself. I would definitely recommend this place anytime anyone is near Victoria Street.
Amazing, cheap and authentic Thai food! A great selection of curries and stir fried noodle dishes. This is a no frills place that always has a crowd but seems to find you a seat every time.
Great food! There’s quite a few Thai places around this area, but would admit this place beats them all! Amazing staff and food is not pricey either. Portions are fair as well.
Reason for a 4 star could be that they could change their menu up every now and then for regulars like me, but other than that it’s great 😊
Great Thai fare - would have to say that they do one of the best Som Tum here - unapologetically spicy and beautifully balanced with lots of crunch. Their pork kuituaw noodle soup was delicious with tender pork pieces in a hot meaty broth. Definitely one of the best Thai haunts I have and look forward to returning.
Great place for excellent quality of food, reasonably priced, XLL quantity of servings and best of all is always smiling & helpful staff. That is called fine dining without million dollar artwork on the wall. Keep going.
My friend favorite Thai food restaurant in north Richmond . There is a small Thai restaurant . When we come they were quite , However. The food was delicious . People , who work in there keep smiling all the time . They let you enjoy the service .
Had a great dinner at Tom Toon tonight. We had s group of five and showed up without a booking and they were very busy so would have understood if we were turned away but they went above and beyond to accomodate us. Staff were fantastic and food tasted great and was also good value.
Delicious papaya salad!! it's hot but fresh and I'm addicted to this taste. Green curry and Tom Yam Soup was also very nice.
There's one thing that bothers me was their sticky rice is a bit dry, not on the menu though.
Staff were friendly and attentive.
The restaurant is small and busy, better to book.
Amazing fresh food and very cute, this place has a whole backside area that you cant see when you first look into it or pass by.
The food is fresh and not oily, which is rare for most casual Thai restauurants.
My favorite is the Tom Kha Gai soup which is so hard to get right and this place gets it just right, so I highly recommend it.
The prices are great and overall a great place, I have to say though they take spicy to the next level :)
We came into Toon Toon Thai as I have seen it become crowded everytime I go to eat Jinda . The restaurant was such a great find as everything we had was amazing. The signature noodle was similar to pho but had a slightly different noodle texture and the broth had different aromatics
The pad thai was very well done and had a lot of flavour . We also enjoyed the curry puffs and the chicken wings ( I found them a little over cooked )

I come here almost once a week for dinner. It’s the best traditional genuine Thai food in Melbourne. Unpretentious cheap excellent food! Their hot pot is such great value! Love this place!
The restaurant is always full. Dishes are nice and service is good as well. It opens until late so it is good for night out. Thai milk tea is really good here!
My husband and I eat here often and the food it pretty close to traditional Thai food you find in Thailand.
Some of our favourite dishes are Pad kee mao, pad see ewe, tom saab and som tum.
This is my favorite thai restaurant in Melbourne, I went there yesterday and I found they have deep fried chicken tendons and so delicious, I really recommend for this restaurant because I’ve been there many times and I’ve never disappointed for foods that I ordered. The prices are not expensive, staff were friendly. I’ll back soon
My first time at this Thai restaurant and it certainly won’t be the last. This place specialises in traditional Thai food (including in the north-eastern region of Thailand a.k.a Issan). From the outside, this narrow restaurant looks small but once inside, there are three different rooms. Yes, it’s very squashy and it seems to always be packed but the food does not disappoint. (Just a tad spicy or sweet on some dishes but easily overlooked considering the delicious flavours). Overall, service is fast, staff are attentive and the food is reasonably priced. **NOTE: Card minimum is $20. No split bill.
Visited this place for my friend’s birthday.
Ordered the chicken wings, the chicken tomyum, the duck curry, the fried whole wish in ginger, papaya salad and the red pork curry. And of course, the coconut rice. 7 serves.
The coconut rice at $3.90 a serve was a rip off. It didn’t have 7 serves in the pot it came in. Can you imagine paying $28 just for rice? Lol.
However, the food otherwise was spot on. Everything was flavoursome and bang on in terms of the freshness.
Service was good as well. We enjoyed the duck curry and the Tom yam. Might return, but since the vicinity has a wide array of Thai restaurants, Maybe I’ll give the rest a go as well.
Busy place but no need to queue
Tom Kho Soup - very tasty soup but dont have much meat in it
Som Tum Bu - my least favourite. I would never order this again
Duck curry - nice nice nice!
Pad Se Ewe - very tasty
Pla Rad Pik whole fish - very little sauce, fish is too dry.
I would come back for the tom kho, duck curry, and pad se ewe
My new favourite Thai restaurant in the city area. Absolutely loved the Thai hot pot, it is so hearty and refreshing! We have also tried their pad thai, pad see ew, bbq pork skewers, tod mun pla (thai fish cake) and mango sticky rice. All the dishes are yummy but their pad see ew and the bbq pork skewer were outstanding.
The service was also lovely, they looked after us with the soup refill for our hot pot and made sure that all our orders were spot on.
the best Thai food In Melbourne and the price is really cheap, I went to this place every week with my family and they always give me a free dessert.I love this place alredy.
Best Thai Food in Melbourne. When you walk into Tom Toon, you always notice the tables filled with actual Thai locals, so you know the food is authentic. Stand out dishes for me are Pud Cha, Pad Thai & Boat Noodles. I think the Thai Milk tea is the best i've tasted in Melbourne as well. Service is always very friendly and love the free complimentary desserts offered by staff as well.
Tom Toon Thai has delicious servings of authentic Thai food! We loved their specialty noodle dish (Kuitiaw Tom Toon) - this is at an affordable price too! The Panang curry was just divine which paired nicely with their Thai Milk Tea! The dessert with banana and ice cream pastry was also nice however a tad too sweet for our liking. Overall, a great place for authentic Thai food - well positioned and friendly staff.
Nice food and friendly staffs. I love their Son Tum and the fish dish, quite authentic and delicious. However the restaurant is very small and the spaces are quite narrow.
Tom Toon Thai does stand out on its own, and not just a spill-over for when the other one around the corner is too full.
Choose the signature noodle dish - the broth is very flavourful and deep, but the serving is kind of what you might get in Thailand i.e. a little small.
The rest of the menu is the typical sharing dishes and is pretty tasty and decent value.
Yummy Thai food with very reasonable price compare to Jinda Thai next door. I really enjoyed the small hot pot and some unique desserts they offer. Can be very busy on Friday/weekend night.
The best Thai food I've ever had aside from my mum's (hard to beat) but honestly everything was so delicious and for the price?? I'll be sure to come back. Just the condiments (chilli, sugar, vinegar and fish sauce) were amazing. It really hit the spot, the sweet, sour and spicy notes, thanks guys! the service was great too 😸🤗
Amazing gravy beef noodle soup. The flavour was awesome & clean broth as well, as slippery rice noodles.Perfect little cute venue has a lovely ambiance & also cheap. The beef stirfry noodle was also tasty with lots of veggies. Servings are small compared with the excessiveness of the rest of Vic st . Waiters are lovely & attentive. Byo wine.
Tom Toon Thai is my go-to place for Thai soupy noodles. Located just below the North Richmond station, this is a small place with old-fashioned decor and very friendly staff. They have varied menu full of soupy noodles, salads, stir-fried dishes and rice dishes. Kuitiaw beef Tom toon is my personal favorite with egg noodles. The broth is excellent with chunks of beef and lots of herbs. They give you extra spices if you want to make your noodles spicy. Papaya salad is another fav of mine. It is light and refreshing. We tried milk tea and a dessert cooked in Banana leaf. Both were good. I never say no to this place.
Brace yourselves for a long review. This place is really near the famous Thai restaurant Jinda but still is packed at peak time.
Som yum bu $9.90: A salted crab papaya salad, one of the best papaya salads I’ve ever tasted not a lot of Thai restaurants have the the salted crab version. But the crab adds this unique flavour and sucking on the crab claws creates a unexplainable delicious flavour profile! Highly recommend this dish. It’s cheaper than most places as well which is a bonus.
Tom yum (chicken) $7.9: We thought the Tom yum would come out in small bowls like most places but we were wrong. This place serves them in pretty big bowls and give you a generous serving of the soup. Really good Tom yum flavour the level of spiciness and sour is spot on.
Pad se ewe $11.90: This dish was done really well like all dishes. Flavouring was good, the noodles weren’t too dry or too soggy. They added some additional veggies to lighten up the mildly greasy dish.
Green curry chicken $14.9: creamy and rich in flavour, wouldn’t order this dish alone as it needs to be accompanied with a fresh salad to lighten it up, it could be a bit tiring to eat otherwise. Portion is quite small for the price but judging from such decadence serving it in small portions is alright.
———————- desserts—————————
Totally forgot what the name of the desserts we ordered but I still remember faintly
Three layer something: at the bottom is deep fried sticky rice pancake, it was crispy and had that sticky rice texture to it. Topped with the cool coconut ice cream to accompany it. Then topped with peanuts and banana. Delicious! Recommend this dish just ask for their dessert menu because it is not posted on Zomato.
Coconut ice cream with banana dumplings: although we ordered banana fritter. We didn’t realise until the end which is totally our fault but it’s ok. The dessert is really good crispy deep fried triangle bananas with a thick batter topped with sesame seeds. The coconut ice cream cuts the greasiness, everything binds together making it a really good finish to our meal.
Service: friendly staff they always smile and are very helpful!
For three: $85 (we expected it to be more since we ordered a lot)
Another Thai Food adventure in North Richmond area, this time we tried Tom Toon Thai Noodle Cafe.
It's a small Thai restaurant tucked just in front of North Richmond station (1 min walking distance).
The vibe and ambience were great, though it was busy time but they managed to make us feel comfortable as soon as we finished our lunch.
The customer staffs were very attentive and they would definitely replace your empty bottle of water which was really good.
We ordered Pud Thai (stir fried rice noodle with bean sprout, Chinese cabbage, cabbage egg, crushed peanut and lemon juice) for $11.90.
It was standard portion served in small plate. The rice noodle was stir fried well, it wasn't overcooked and it was just right.
The taste of Pud Thai was definitely above the standard; Everything was just on the spot and had a balance taste.
It was unusual to put Chinese cabbage into the pud thai but they managed to mix it well.
Unfortunately, I didn't taste any crushed peanut inside the Pud Thai;
The presentation wasn't too good (too much bean sprout on top of the food in the small plate) but the taste was fantastic.
Overall, we had a great time having lunch in Tom Toon; reasonable value and decent taste.
Service: 4.0
Taste: 4.0
Price: 3.5
Speed: 3.0
Yay: Pud Thai
Nay: Food presentation wasn't too good.
Location: 241 Victoria Parade, Abbotsford, Melbourne
Phone: 03 9417 7447
It’s fully packed all the time and they don’t have a proper waiting area. You can wait forever to get a table but it is really worth it. The curry is excellent but a bit small
No 3.5 tonight. We had take away from this
restaurant and it was surprisingly really good. We had some rice noodles w chicken and vegetables, and that was delish.
Then some pork w chilli and pad seiw euw (wrong
spelling) and OMGosh this WAS spicy hahaha
The massaman beef was disappointing, w thin strips of dry chewy meat and it wasn’t slow
cooked. Just meat w a sauce added.
The jasmine rice was good. Overall a solid 3.5 but I can’t do that so it’s a 4. As 3 out of 4 were tasty.

Another awesome thai restaurant in melbourne. They focus more on North Eastern thai food which is Somtum.
Their food was awesome, Somtum, Fried Chicken, Tom Zab and all
Recommend to try this place!
Good services, both waiters and waitresses are very friendly. I like that pear shape light in front of reception. Foods are good, I recommend small hot pot and pork neck.
Services 5/5

Environment 3.5/5
Abosolouty delicious food....great authentic thai food , very well priced .....friendly staff , a pretty good extensive menu, Iyou can tell when food is cooked with love. One of the best pad Thai in Melbourne
Genuine Thai flavours and similar to what I expect in a Bangkok cafe. I tried the curry puffs, pork pad Thai, and pork larb. You can guarantee if this menu says spicy - it will be spicy. All these dishes were great - I give the pad Thai 4/5. Curry puffs weren’t my favourite - the pastry is the moist flaky kind. The larb had lots of coriander and mint, and was nice and spicy.
This place brings you to Bangkok instantly! They cater to all spice lovers and the delicious food will keep you coming back for more! The boat noodles are a must try! Parking around the area van be challenging but it never stopped me from going back

Great Thai food! Really authentic, fast and very affordable. The customer service is excellent and there was no wait on the food. Honestly can’t fault this place. We were extremely happy with all the dishes we ordered: tom yum soup with noodles, chicken red curry, coconut rice, bbq port skewers and banana fritters with coconut ice cream. We will definitely be returning regularly and recommending this place to all our friends!
One of the best thai places in melbourne and we couldnt believe why we havent been here before!! Love the papaya salad and grapow rice, tomyum soup flavourful but not spicy as expected. Also had their thai omelette and chicken noodle soup - so good!
Lunch for 3. We dropped by on the recommendation to try the small hot pot, and we weren’t disappointed. Not sure if the green chilli and tamarind sauces were condiments specific to the hot pot but they were divine! I love tamarind so adding it to the pad thai just took the dish up a notch. Fried chicken wings were ok. We noticed there were a lot of Thai speaking customers so that was a positive sign. All in all a great meal at reasonable prices. Would definitely go back.
Best Thai food I've had outside Thailand. All the dishes were authentic and flavours awesome. Great value too. Service was excellent, very friendly staff. Will definitely be back to taste other dishes.
Love this place! The signature noodles are my favourite. So much so that I try to come for lunch as much as I can. The chicken is so tender and moist and the soup is not full of msg like most of the pho places down the road. The condiments that accompany the noodles are refreshing and spicy. Service here is always friendly with a smile. Can’t wait to be back!
Awesome value and quality menu, very authentic and the dishes come out quickly, try as many different dishes as you can! Nothing will disappoint.
Tried this place based on Zomato rating. Good location just 2 min walking from North Richmond station and tram. Place was busy. We ordered beef stir fry with basil, pork stir fry, seafood tom yum, papaya salad, pork skewers, duck curry and seafood pad tai. Tom yum was really good, but others dishes we ordered were so so only. Overall is ok.
😱this is one of the best Thai food place in my rating! Love the gravy noodle, papaya salad and the small hot pot. Dont miss out the coco nut mousse that you can get 3 for 5 dollar! Its amazing 🤤🤤🤤🤤 also the staff with the curly hair who seems like the manager of the store is super friendly and helpful!!!! I could eat this place everyday !!!
Located north Richmond , the shop atmosphere dining is nice . The customer services is not bad , asking how’s the food taste like and trying to improved their services thumbs up . And the food is good not bad at all , tasty and delicious. Yes and recommended the desert too is great . And the price overall reasonable . Cheers
A very traditional Thai food. The food is so amazing and the staff are so much friendly. Especially this dessert, it recall a lot of memory. Chef,Thanks so much for making such a wonderful dishes.
Good food and good experience with my friend. We love the soup and fried rice very much! Service was nice too! Thanks the lovely waiter and waitress for the birthday surprise! 😘
Tight seated restaurant in true Thai style. Food is street food style so don't expect pretty presentation. The noodles are exceptional packed full of flavour also good for the wallet

Favourite place for thai food! If you look for authentic thai food nearby the cbd this is the one ! I usually have papaya salad, sour pork, pork skewers with sticky rice but recently had The dish called 'Jim Joon' or Thai hot pot was so delicious together with their sauces, must try!
Was recommended this place by a friend. Amazing place with yummy food!! We ordered the pad thai with prawns - great serving, and red curry with chicken. We had ordered the red curry with medium spice to test the waters and it came out to be creamy and luscious. Will be coming again for trying the hot spice version!!
This is our favourite local esan ( north east of Thailand). It's funky, tasty and smiley staff they have. Always busy at lunch and dinner. They open lunch til 4.30 daily and again dinner 7 days a week. They do have some specials written in Thai for Thai palates. Truly Esan Thai which probably best one I tried in Melbourne.

Thai Hot Pot and Papaya Salad are the best! You must try!!!!! I really love this place. When my friends want to try thai food, I always tell them to go to Tomtoon as food is in a reasonable price and seriously tasty.
Definitely a must try restaurant in Melbourne!!!! My boyfriend and I ordered tom yum soup, green curry and fried noodles. Fries noodle is good, it has a sweet flavor. Tom yum soup and green curry were really impressive!!!! We love the food here!
Tasty food! Made a reservation and glad we did as there were many people waiting outside when we left. We had the pad cha with minced chicken and yellow curry, so delicious.Staff are friendly and service is great. Highly recommend.
We ate here for Mothers Day. The food is fantastic value for money and all dishes were an absolute delight. My favourite was the fish curry but try the papaya salad too! I'm looking forward to coming back soon!!
Nice enviroment and service. Reansonable price with wonderful food. Been there several times and went home with a fuuuull belly. 😂😂 Jim Joom is my regular dish. Quite enough for two people
Pretty tasty, healthy and spicy food 🥘 very quick service and polite staff! Tried veggie red curry and coconut rice. Both were full of flavor and yummy ! Will defiantly go back !
I always come here at weekend, I really like chicken noodle soup and pork noodle soup was very tasty!! Staff was so nice and awesome services. 👌🏻👌🏻
This restaurant made its way to become my number one choice Thai cuisine for me. I LOVE their ESAN (Thai northeastern) dishes, mostly are tasty and full of the real Thai flavours. Service was average and just sometimes if you not booking , you have to wait for long queue during peak hours.
Came here first time by friend's suggestion! Ưe had an absolutely unforgetable night! Pefect services and the food was really delicious! Waiter and waitress were absolute friendly! Gotta come back here soon one day!
This restaurant was professional at spicy foods
; Tom yam, Tom sab and Tom klong.
I usually went there when i missed Thailand haha.
Been here many many times. It's my favourite fuss free Thai restaurant. Friendly staff. Fast and always delicious authentic Thai food. Mango sticky rice always a good end to every meal. Come with your kids and there is a good chance they get free dessert.
Traditional Thai food . Tom yum soup ,pad thai was nice. Thai milk tea was nice but better to order less sugar. If you want to try Really traditional Thai food. This place you wouldn't miss out. By the way, you can call them up to reserve a table before you go. They are quite busy at night
Casual and tasty Thai with efficient and attentive service.
Came here for lunch at 5 minutes after the place opened for lunch, we got a table quickly and were given cold water right away - perfect for Melbourne's summer - yay!
We then proceeded with the crispy pork and stir-fried Chinese brocolli which was delicious. The pork has the right split of fat and meat while being crunchy and well marinated. The veggies were fresh and well-coated with balanced sauce.
We then got the duck red curry which was tasty. It was sweet and very fatty with strong coconut flavour. But it was still within the acceptable range and didn't invoke any unpleasant end-taste afterwards. The duck meat was well marinated as well. The portion was reasonable considering the price.
We then got the pud cha - stir-fried chicken with veggies which was okay. The chicken meat was surprisingly tender yet the whole dish was under-seasoned and lacking flavours. It was a bit underwhelming.
We also got a serve of coconut rice which was very fragrant, separating, and not too sweet. We got the Thai milk tea as well, which was refreshing and energising. Service was friendly and quick!
Fantastic restaurant in the heart of Abbotsford! Great variety in the menu at a good price. Quality and quantity were on top. No complaints from a large group of 20. Would love to go again soon!
Been here for the first time and what a hidden gem! It's not as popular as Jinda but it was just as full. Didn't have any of the dishes that are to be eaten with rice but we all had the boat noodles which were amazing.
Best boat noodles I've had in Melbourne! The pork soup is extremely tasty and the meat is tender. Love it and will definitely come back! Legit.
Thai sukiyaki - great broth, and their variety of chili sauces added another layer of explosion in your mouth - just amazing! Fried chicken was also good, crispy exterior but a bit bland inside. Vegetables for the Pad thai was still too crunchy, I would prefer them cooked longer.
A distinct kinda Thai food .... North eastern Thai style.
Don't be fooled by the simple, unpretentious shop front, nor the quaint size of the joint, come in earlier than normal dining hours to make sure you'll get the best seat. Neatly set up, a tad dark and you must love Brown colour/wood texture.
The food here is distinctively different from the mainstream Thai food scene in Melbourne; don't just order the usual safe stuff on the Menu like Green Curry Chicken and Pad Thai, go for their noodle soups, Kuitiaw Tom Toon, Som Tum (Papaya salad), etc.
It will take a few visits to familiarize yourself with their origin, just let your taste-buds travels around Thailand, it won't break the bank.
Always dependable for a hot tasty bowl of gravy soup noodles, either pork or chicken. Satisfying and reasonably priced. Just wish they'd bring back the fried pork lard in the soup noodles!
Other dishes on the menu, whilst perfectly decent, tend to run in smaller portions; so manage your expectations when ordering.
One of the best Thai curry I have had in Melbourne! The green curry with fish fillet was gorgeous!!! Rich and also balanced. So as their prawn puff and coconut rice. My friend and I finished all of them. Lovely place will come again!
Good authentic thai food, my favourite dish is definitely the soft shell crab green papaya salad, very refreshing for the palate! If you can't take spicy food, it's better to let them know as the food can be really spicy!

The best Authentic Thai resturant in town! They are cheap ( cheaper than Jandai Thai around the corner), tasty and fast service. Plus they serve Som Tom ( papaya salad) which not a lot of thai resturants do.
My favourite Thai restaurant in Melbourne. I would highly recommend their Tom Sab. It could be their signature soup. Very few places serve this soup in Melbourne.
This place is pretty small. Only have a few tables. I went with 5 friends here on Sunday around 2-3 o clock. We can easily get a table.
We ordered Pud kha na beef and pork, Curry fish fillet, and Pad se ewe beef.
- Pud kha na beef and pork. The taste is not really special but good.
- Pad se ewe beef. Its also so-so.
- Curry fish fillet. I like this one ! Very thick coconut flavour. Thumbs up.
Overall, the service was good, place pretty small, and the food was okay.
Hope you guys enjoy your meal here ! Cheers ! 😁🎉
A Melbourneous storm raged at the beginning of winter. Three friends battled the elements and found there way to Tom Toon Thai Noodle Noodle Cafe. It was a full house so we settled for the outdoor seating. Whilst undercover, the rain continued to drown the suburb of abbotsford. The tacky furniture ripped from a South-East Asian setting transported my spiritual being to the island of Koh Tao. The menu was informative but a problem occurred among the green papaya salad section. "A som tum bu pla ra" I screamed. The waitress turned, looked me dead in the eye and said "not for you boy," I laughed internally. "I can handle the spice."
"It's not the spice, it's the smell." She had my attention. One look from the boys and I knew that dish had to be devoured. The waitress surged for the kitchen to place the order and I sat there in patience arrogantly exchanging quips with my friends until the papaya salad arrived.
At first glance the dish seemed like any other Thai salad. The crab legs, the chilli, the pickled mud fish, etc... seemed inviting. The first bite had me beat. All five senses were bombarded and overpowered with disgust. I fear describing the taste as I wish not to be taken back to such a harrowing experience. This dish is a delicacy. This dish is for easterners and Thai alike. This dish mocks westernised Asian. Hats off to those who can handle this taste, I will never again challenge the service.
In short. I reordered a pad Thai. Was nice AF. my friend (luthy) thinks it's the best value Thai restaurant on vic st. I agree. My other friend (sammy) got the duck curry. He was smiling for ages.
Tom Toon never change please
I'm impressed by this small noodle / northeastern Thai restaurant. We tried all the noodles, papaya salad, and grilled chicken liver. They are all fantastic. I'm from Bangkok and the quality of the food here exceeded my expectation. Superb service!
service was quick, food came out fast and was so yum! i even think some items jn the menu have generous portion size! the price is very reasonable too! definitely coming back
Always friendly and efficient service even during the busy time. Make sure to try their signature dish, noodle soup with choices of rice or egg noodles topped with generous serving of beef or pork meat and meatballs. Parking can be problematic in the area.
I frequent this restaurant regularly. The staff are always hospitable and the owner is extremely friendly and welcoming he is a charmer. The fiod and the chefs i cannot find fault with. Some of the best dishes iv ordered are the hot pot, pad thai, som tam, red curry and the various thai salads. Definitely the best thai restaurant in melbourne and prices are cheap as well!
Ive been this place many times with my friends.
dish price is reasonable and lovely staffs. Tasty dishes. Im happy to come again this place :)
*Go there and enjoy but there is no amazement*Went here becase my Thai gf convinced me that she finally found a place with authentic Som Tum. The place is easy to reach with Train in North Richmond and is easy to book. Staff are friendly and food was served at good pace. We ordered 2 salads, 1 soup and 2 mains.
Soup: Tom Yum with Chicken was delightful 5/5 and it had a hint of spice but honestly one of the best. My gf confirmed it is authentic.
Salad: Tub wan which was basil leaves and pork liver (I found the idea of pork liver disgusting so I did not it eat but my gf said it is 2.5/5 so don't buy it
Second salad was Som Tum Sour with vermicelli noodle. Honestly I do not like som tum but this one was alright but still too spicy for me. Again my gf who is expert in som tum said that it is authentic and 4/5
Main: Pla Pad King and Pud Med Ma. Pla pad King was fish fillet with gingenr sauce. I think it was average while the sauce was nice, the deep fried fish made it less pleasant. I prefer the fish I had in the pacific seafood bbq or cho chi in bopha devi. So I just call this one average 2.5/5
Pud med ma was chicken with cashew and it was quite delicious 4/5.
We had Mango sticky rice with Coconut Ice cream which was great but not full mark because mango was a bit sour not fully sweet so 4/5.
Value for food was 4.5/5 and you get what your money is worth.
Summary is I give this place a weak 4/5 (so 3.9ish). I will visit here again but there is no wow factor and nothing that would make me come again next week. Thanks to the very friendly and polite staff though good on you!
This tiny Thai place served up some really yummy dishes. It wasn't hard to spot when there were lines of people queuing outside ordered takeaways.
It's good, but the most recent time I went (Feb 2016) the food was overly salty and lacked some of the flavours you expect. That was only for the graw pao... The noodles were perfect and they really do have a lot of noodle/soup options that you can't get everywhere else.
Tom Toon is a great little restaurant serving delicious authentic Thai food. The red chicken curry is one of my fave's and the quality of the food for the price is spectacular! Certainly one of my favourite Thai restaurants in Melbourne.
Great authentic Thai food. My wife's family is from
Thailand and she's normally hard to impress when it comes to Thai food. Excellent, fast and attentive service. It's one of our local favourites! 👍😀
Fantastic Thai cuisine, fast service, decent prices! The Tom Yum soup is the best in the city - chicken breast, lots of veggies and great flavour. My only comment would be that the dishes will not necessarily come out "in order". My wife's main came out with my rice, my main was a few minutes behind. No biggie, this is our favorite place. BYO wine.
Good Issan style food, som tum and sticky rice!! Authentic Thai dishes, relaxed, not fancy. Great place to stop for a bite or a casual meal.
I've been eating at Tom Toon for 3 years and it's my go-to Thai restaurant. Some of the highlights on the menu are the Nam Gai (off menu special), Gravy Soup, Red Curry, and Chilli Basil Stir Fry. Really authentic flavour, great level of heat, and service with a smile. The place is very no-frills but you're not there to admire the decor. Great place to come with a few friends and order everything! My only criticism is that the pad thai is pretty ordinary but everything else is pretty faultless.
Wonderful dining experience for my partner and out of town family guests. Not only were they able to accomodate our last minute booking on a busy night, the service was considerate and friendly throughout. Well priced, delicious authentic food. Certainly amongst the best thai ive had whilst in Melbourne but it was the over and above customer service that would make me a repeat customer at this delightful little thai restaurant. Cost $89 for 5 people.
Hi guys at tom toon thanks for all your great service and smiles through out the year your foods are the best thai meals in town your larb ghai, bamboo salad, ghan om, etc etc and I love the pastry desert with ice cream thanks again. Peter
Cheap, authentic and flavorsome food. Full of flavor and chili so be prepared! Staff were so attentive and lovely. Overall great place for casual dining.
Came multiple times for dinner. Authentic Thai food packed with flavors at reasonable price. Loved all their food - entrees, mains, desserts. One of the best Thai restaurants to go to for a quick Thai fix!
Legit Thai. Good price (I don't get the people who come the prices to what you get in Thailand here....). This is where all the thai people eat. If you're yuppie/hipster white person who hasn't eaten real asian food AKA asian asian food, please move on.
I always come here for lunch as my workplace is just nearby. I must say their gravy noodle soup is very delicious. The so called gravy soup served with bean sprout and kang Kong. You may choose the meat and type of the noidle. The beef and pork are my favourite while vermicelli (glass noodle)and thin rice noodle with those tender juicy meat are the best combo.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Melbourne I found so far! Yes it is just a small restaurant with limited space but the taste is more than you can imagine;) Foods are really authentic Thai 1000%!
One of the rare gems of authentic Thai eateries around where it's not patronized by hipsters and the pretentious crowd. It's as good as Jinda but a fraction of the cost and double the serving size. Oh and very good service too ✌🏼️
Tiny Thai restaurant opposite the North Richmond Station, on the Victoria Parade. Always come here whenever i feel Thai cuisines. My big recommendation for those who love Thai foods and crazy for chilli, spicy and sour flavours, asking their special dished which written in Thai ^^
Somtom!so good. Food so really good compare with Jinda Thai restaurant there is still not authentic Thai food.
Somtom and sticky rice can die for it.
Actually this was my second visit. I had Tom Yum soup during my first visit. It was good too, but not as spicy as Ying Thai's. The advantage is you could adjust the spicy and sour level yourself by adding their chillies. But the noodle soup beats it flat. Hands down man.
Delicious and cheap. Had dinner here tonight. It was nice not to be so crammed in on Victoria St. My husband had a lovely chicken stirfry for only $10. My $13 tofu & veg red curry was perfect. Roti bread was nice (I would get one serve per person). Only the spring rolls were a let down. Will be back!
Yummy Thai Dinner. A Thai recommended us to this restaurant. Turn out the dinner to be good and yummy. We ordered the green curry chicken, the papaya salad, tom yum soup and the chicken claypot. Chicken claypot tasted abit bland, not that we expected. But the the green curry was yummy. Food portion is abit small but price is affordable. Limited place. Will come back again for next round.
Very nice Thai Hot Pot. Really nice Thai Hot Pot. Quite reasonable price as well. The sauce are amazing. It is the best choice for a cold night.
The food is delicious, the staff are lovely, the prices are cheap! Love it! Have dinner here once a week! Yum!
Amazing authentic Thai food! I have tried the noodle soup and stir fry rice dishes, they are all fantastic. Lucky me to have my office nearby.
Tom Yummmmm. So glad I turned down Victoria Street and stumbled across Tom Toon. Had the noodle dish and was so impressed I then ordered the papaya salad with salted crab! Great food and even greater service. Will be back again and again for sure.
Awesome delicious food, delight ful service. Couldn't fault it after many visits!
Nice authentic taste. I love this place, its quite small but the food taste quite similar to authentic Thai food. If u guys like spicy,, come here
Nice but small portions and very sweet. In general, the portions are small, food is tasty but found everything very very sweet, pricing is standard Thai fare price, there shouldn’t be an issue with the seating during weekend dinner times, they sell crispy pork crackling as well ($5 a tub).
Good:
Desserts (sticky rice with something like a pratha/roti coated with condensed milk, topped with peanuts and coconut rice cream; mango sticky rice was outshined)
Thai pork sausages (pretty sure frozen and not made in house but it was good! Just like in Thailand minus the big price hike)
Som Tum (only if you can handle high level of spiciness. Requested non spicy and no peanuts but it still came burning and with peanuts)
Good but too sweet:
Green curry
Hot pot (really very sweet!)
Tom Yum (more sweet than sour spicy but still tasty)
Yummy time at Tom Toon cafe!
Friendly staff and cosy ambience in this very reasonably priced Thai restaurant. One of our local favourites everything here is yum-tastic and you can get a dinner meal for under $10. If you have a sweet tooth try the crepe cake which is so good I asked them to make it into my bday cake!
Yup, great feed! This is the best Thai meal I have had in a long time..... Get here and eat!
Best soup in Melbourne!. Great service, and gravy soups are to die for!
Good food and good service! Must try the panang curry and pork noodle soup.
Kuay Tiaw Soup is unbeatable. They only need 3 items on the menu, the pork, chicken and beef noodle soups. The best soups i've ever eaten hands down. Any time i go there and think about trying something else on the menu i feel like i'm cheating on the soup, same goes if i have pho or soup at another place on Victoria st, it seems like a wasted opportunity to have the best soup in existance...
We always have a nice, tasty meal here. Not overly spicy (when we want that we go to Ying Thai just a few doors down), but the mains have plenty of flavour. Recommended!
Reminds me of home.. This is my favorite Thai in all of Melbourne.
Just for 1 dish. Beef Noodle Soup!
Just like back home. MMmmmmmm
Tom Toon is a lovely little casual eatery, with its combination of friendly staff, great value, intimate dining, and with its authentic and tantilising menu. This is surely one of my favourite thai cuisine destinations in Melbourne.
Worthy of a second visit. Having been to Thailand a number of times, I find myself often let down by the local Thai restaurants. This is a shame as Thai is one of my favourite cuisines. After reading about Tom Toon, I thought it I would try it specifically for the soups. I tried the beef gravy soup, as this is not a typical item on the local Thai menus. The soup arrived with a generous amount of meat (beef and brisket?) and egg noodles. It was tasty and filling and the addition of a spoon of chilli turned it into delicious. I am keen to return to try some other items from their menu.
The food was excellent,as good as Thailand itself.portions could have been bigger though and the food arrived sporadically.but its just about forgivable when the food is that damn good.the Panang curry in particular was excellent.looking forward to going back!
Best Som Tom in Melbourne. I always look for a place in Melbourne to have good "Som Tom" (papaya salad) that is exotic and a real taste of Thai. And i can say now that "I have finally found the one!". It is not just the Som Tum that is good here, they have so many dishes that makes me miss Thailand... or maybe all of their dishes :)
Ever since I have discovered Tom Toon (which is only this year), I have been back at least 20 times already. I introduced Tom Toon to my family, friends, and colleagues which are now the regular customer of this place. Customer service is good and the food is amazing!! what else can you ask for, right? Oh, and forgot to mention about the price... it's so cheap!!! Happy eaters!!
Good Food Good service. I went there last Friday night with my friends and we ordered BBQ pork skewers as the nice waitress recommended us. It was yummy. For main, we had stir fried snapper and beef gravy soup. we loved them right away. The service was also very nice, lovely smile. Would recommend this nice restaurant for good food and good service. We will go back there for sure:)

The best thai but sadly with poor service and little portion. Somtum is best suit to my taste. Thai pastry is definitely a kick ass but u have to be let downabit with the portion and how rude the staff is.i still recommend here for people looking JUST for good food
The best Som tam(papaya salad) and love the Thai style hot pot. Delicious
My new favourite Thai! Both times I've been I had the pork larb, green curry and beef stir fry. All very delicious and with fresh ingredients. The curry is rich and thick. The second time I had the larb is was very very hot, next time I'll be requesting less chili!
Good cheap and feels like your there. God I miss Thailand! Love the food.
Delicious - Authentic Thai. Have been coming here for a few years.. Wether it's with the missus or with the whole family including Mum!
Food is delicious, tasty and with a fair price-tag.
Customer service is acceptable with nothing much to complain about.
Always have, and still will be dining here once or twice a month. .
A Thai Gem!. A surprise when you walked into the cafe. It had a homely feel and you were greeted with similey waitresses. The food were pretty authentic thai. The fish cakes had a bit of kick. The chicken wings wer crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. The pork and beef noodles were absolutely delicious, perfect for a cold winter afternoon. Highly recommended.
I've visited this neat little restaurant a couple of times now. Lots of variety on the menu, seems quite authentic and has more than the just usual curries you see in Thai restaurants. It's always a good sign when you see lots of Thai people dining at a Thai restaurant! I had the beef noodle soup, which was fresh and very tasty. They also cater well for vegetarians too. Be careful if you order anything with chillis- it's quite hot!!
Open Late. The Thai food at times here can be as good as the best in town. Although inconsistent, its always very lively and the staff is a lot of fun.
Open late most nights - and even later on the weekend, there's nothing better than getting real spicy food after a night of drinks.
Tantalising & tremdous Thai Food. I don't generally write reviews of restaurants. This is my first.
I have eaten at this restaurant at least weekly (often more) for the past year. The portions are delicious, generous and VERY reasonably priced.
In fact I don't think it is enough to say delicious. I am an Australian who has lived in Thailand for over a year as a younger person, and I'm alway looking for place that serve good, honest thai food. I've lived in melbourne now for 12 years and have spent much of that time looking for these kinds of places. Places come and go, they change chefs, prices go up, the attention to detail in the food gets better or worse. Some of the thai places I have loved eating at in Melbourne include Thai Classic in north fitzroy, Thaila Thai in Brunswick, Ying Thai 2 in Carlton ( I like it better than the Victoria St one).
There are many, many other places I have tried in my quest for good, clean Thai food (not greasy, fresh ingredients, delicate flavour that doesn't rely on fat and MSG) .
Tom Toon is simply the BEST VALUE AUTHENTIC THAI FOOD I have ever had in this city. Their Thai salads are a balance between hot, salty, sweet and sour with the wonderful aroma and correct proportions of fresh herbs. They have lots of dishes that a vegetarian can rejoice in- fried noodles, soups, salads, hot-pots. Other favourites include the fish cakes that could have been bought at a busy Bangkok street food vendor or the chilli and thai basil stir-fry.
I also particularly love the deserts. In my estimation, a lot of asian deserts are too sweet without any of the depth of relationship between fat and sugar that a good european dessert might have. For the most part I've given up on ordering desserts in asian restaurants. Here Tom toon also excels. they have a beautiful coconut and preserved fruit dish that is a perfect balance between sweetness, varied textures of the fruit and the creamy goodness of coconut cream.
I have taken many friends to this restaurant. From friends who have the means to eat at 'hat' restaurants regularly to those who frequent the best cheap asian food in melbourne (pacific house, kappaya etc).
Everyone I have taken here ( there have been a lot!) marvel at the quality, price and service.
I'm not exactly sure whats going on with 'thai food expert', who slagged this restaurant off. Perhaps they are affiliated with the other restaurant that they mention in their review? Anyway...
I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. David Thompson would probably love it too ;

Can't vouch for anything else, but noodle soup is brilliant, authentic flavours, condiments and garnish. Will be back very soon. Love it.
WHOA MY GOODNESS was it spicy!! As we ate into it, the chilli hotness pretty much went into my ears… making this one of the spiciest dishes I’ve had in Melbourne in a long while.
Tom Toon does pretty authentic Thai food, but be warned: there are no curries at this Thai restaurant. Somewhat incongruous, but what they do, they do well.
Let me tell you, this restaurant has been eating for at least 10 years. It's an old shop in Melbourne. Today I want to eat something spicy and delicious. So let's get it. Very spicy pickled fish crab salad
Ordered 2 papaya salad. 1 serve medium, 1 serve extra extra hot. Only bite into the first word It comes with all the flavors. pickled fish is very fragrant. Spicy soup with chicken feet is good. Fried pork belly is a must! Absolutely delicious
The shop is next to North Richmond Station. The shop has been renovated. There's also an additional seat in the back. Sit comfortably, not crowded. Highly recommend
It was a bit cold to sit at the back with the current polar blast. Food was authentic and great! Enjoyed our dinner and catch up. Staff members were lovely. Would come back next time
I’d give them a 10 stars if I could for the quality and authentic Thai food, customer service, and the big proportions you get for the price compared to other Thai restaurants I’ve eaten at before.
Everything was SO delicious and the energy/vibe during dinner was AWESOME.
Make sure you try their Sticky Rice Mango for desserts because it was refreshingly yummy.
one of my favourite Thai restaurants in Melbourne, and in my opinion, better than the more famous one around the corner. beautiful delicious food served by wonderful people. I have brought many friends to Tomtoon and they have always left with satisfied tummies and smiles on their faces. pretty much everything suits my taste and I like that you can select spice levels for some of the dishes. especially love the three layer dessert!
Plenty of Thai places I like in the hood and this is easily one of the top! It's so isolated from other asian restaurants on the same street so i never came across.. We came here just because I spicy wasn't open, and were very happy with everything. 5 star for great taste and lovely customer service! The hot pot prawn or Panang curry would be my favourite. Pork crackle was very nice too, I bought a pack take away!!

A place to order sour food.
I highly recommend you to order their Papaya salad (Somtam). My all time favourite is the duck salted egg somtam, TOP NOTCH! They do serve Thai spicy level so if your palette cannot cope with too much spice, let them know you want a mild one. They also offer various Thai local dishes that are championed like Gang Om. I personally don't like big chunks of veggie (can be seen in the fish pic) so I never ordered any stir fry from them.
The larb and papaya salad here was delicious.
We were very impressed by the service too, the lady that was taking our order was super nice.
Tom Zab on the other hand though was a little bit lacking for us. It didn't have a punch, no spiciness, tanginiess or lime. It just tasted very healthy which we weren't used to when comparing it to Dodee or Issan Thai.
I would still come back here though. Great location and one of the better Thai restos in Richmond.
We had a great work lunch here, what a gem, great food, good service and cosy space out the back made for a really enjoyable experience.
As it was a quick work lunch I only got to try the massaman curry with a coconut rice side. Both were well portioned and absolutely delicious. Look forward to going again soon.
