Randomly entered Marvis the Grocer for lunch after my business in Abbotsford. Though i did not have any expectations, this little cafe/grocer is fantastic. Plenty of natural lights through big windows, super friendly yet non-intrusive serving staff and great choice of songs in the background. To top it all off, the foods taste amazing with fresh ingredients and the portion is very generous for the price. Highly recommended!

pretty disappointing. not good vibes. staff seemed disinterested and inexperienced, and didn't know their offering very well. despite not being busy (3-4 tables of 2-3 patrons each) i had to ask someone to come take our order after about 10 minutes of waiting. coffee: tasted pretty average. honestly went and got another one down the road immediately after because it was just not good. food: at least the food came out quickly, but tasted bland and kind of mushy. too many flavours so it just turned into a nothing taste.

Great coffee and soulful food with humble staff….great overall experience

A really cute place, staff are friendly and has a great vibe to it (with some banging tunes!). The coffee was great, made pretty perfectly. I had the omelette option, not your typical omelette but again, good flavours and a decent portion as well. I recommend checking this place out!

4.3. Here’s how to do it. This is a lovely bright corner cafe. It has a really nice feel inside and out. It has great outdoor seating options in the right weather. It just has that comfortable friendly aura here. Mavis’ shows that quality of service is key. One of Melbourne’s top cafe owners told me last week that quality of service was the most important thing of all. He’s right. It’s critical. With that in mind I received a joyous greeting here from the server with the white shocked hair, “...how are you, man”. Other customers received, “...how are ya!”, and other similar happy greetings. On being thanked by me for my coffee being delivered to the table, I received a “...no worries, my man”. He is fantastic and he personifies great service. Friendly and engaging with everyone but not intrusive or annoying. Just perfect in fact. The tables are a bit close together in some spots here. I was sort of part of my neighbours’ convo but neither I nor they minded and we had a quiet chuckle about it. It’s s good menu here. Small but thoughtfully composed. A place to return to. I just had a jaffle today. I couldn’t resist it. One with gruyere and baked beans. A delicious snack complete with crinkle cut chips on the side. The jaffle was delicious. The baked beans decent beans. Not the usual canned commercial beans. Proper beans. The cheese was delicious too. It was all nicely cooked and presented. I loved it. My long black was a beauty as well. A very good Melbourne coffee. As strong as my last one was weak. With the lovely length that my last one so lacked. This is a cracking cafe. It’d be near bliss outside here on a nice day. Highly recommended. I shall be back for sure.

Loved this very groovy cafe. Great food with lots of unusual and seasonal ingredients. Very tasty and perfect coffee to boot. Friendly staff and plenty of seats either inside or out.

Came in for brunch today which was great . Enjoyed hearing The Who Sell Out. I bought that album when it came out. Long before all of you were born.

First time. Great setting in the old Grocer store. Staff were very friendly and prompt with their service. Ordered brunch and coffee. The omelette looked sensational and tasted as good. The hock ham and cheese toastie was perfection. Coffee is also great served in very distinctive cups. Give this place a try. I will certainly be coming back.

Food was good . Service non existent. 5 staff plus manager , 4 tables in while I was there . Very slow service , food delivered , no salt/ pepper on table , tried to get staff attention , ended up getting up myself . Wood panel fell on my table , scared the shit out of me , it knocked my water glass over . Although they wiped up the water they didnt think to give me a new glass . And to the owner / manager . Staff are giving your sweets away to their friends . For a new business , the food will carry them so far but they need better management and better wait staff . All appeared rushed off their feet doing very little for the 4 tables inside

Went in before lunch on sat, staffs r nice but just way too many staffs on such a small place. Ordered take away latte not too hot and a pork belly sandwich. Waited for 10 mins .. just for a forgot to be toasted sandwich, and coffee shot had been made for more than 5 mins , just waiting for the milk ... Coffee tasted really sour, and it's extra hot. Sandwich tasted great but part of it tasted a bit off ........
Coral Montero Lopez
Coffee was bitter and a bit overpriced for what it is. Ordering wasn't "organic" and flowing, but rather messy, ordering on one corner and paying on opposite side of bench, just to go back to initial point to collect take away.
Phoebe Melita
Really poor customer service. Waited near the door for a long time before being approached and when I asked if I would be able to grab a table I was told “well are there any even free” in a very pointed way. When I identified several free tables, the staff failed to come over offer me a menu etc. I left, how ridiculous
Kat Collins
Loved the Wagu burger; great prompt service and friendly staff.

We have been doing a breakfast club for last 7 years. One of best new places we tried this year.
Stav Binos
One of my favourite places to have my lunch breaks.. Yummy food , great coffee and lovely service ....

It is always exciting to see new and innovative cafes established in this extremely competitive industry. Unfortunately, Mavis the grocer failed and missed the most simplest delivery of customer service and correctly cooked food. In short- waited 55mins with no communication from the uncoordinated staff and the salmon was overcooked. The coffee was acceptable! I truly hope that Mavis the grocer can reflect on this feedback and improve to survive in this cut throat market.

Sorry but 4.50 for a small hot chocolate, and it is too hot milk burnt, no froth. I do not drink coffee as a adult its hard to find a good hot chocolate. Sorry again will not be back to expensive and not good quality.
Rebecca Long
Loved every aspect of this cafe. Best coffee and lunch in the hood.

This is a cute little corner cafe with comfortable seating and a nice indoor and outdoor area. I came here for brunch and ordered the crab scramble and coffee. The food arrived a bit cold and the crab could have been a bit more fresh, but it was a nice meal. The service was great, and the food is reasonably priced. It's a great place to go for a relaxed weekend brunch.

Such a lovely atmosphere. The food looks amazing and tastes even better! Beautiful friendly happy singing staff! Enjoyed my visit very much ❤️

I could like this local gem ...

A bit hidden, only a local would know, despite running parallel with Hoddle St. It seems far from the madding crowd; tree lined street, sunlight, glorious golden hue from those Maple trees leaves. The cafe is housed within this tastefully converted period building, it's "glorious" remnant still intact; high ceiling, big glass windows, indoor and outdoor, and most importantly, they know how to make coffee and Chai latte.

Warm and comfortable, we shall come back to explore more ... I could like this local gem. JT-May 2019.
Bites Of Melbourne
Visited during the week for lunch to catch up with a friend.
Staff were great and super helpful.
The menu has a lot of breakfast items, but sandwiches ect at the counter and they also had a specials board.
There is an area you can eat outside that looked cute but was too cold, is fairly small inside

Friday lunch. Sat in the rear courtyard. Attentive staff. Loved that their table water is sparkling. Iced latte was nice & cool on a warm day. Chicken burger was juicy. Would have preferred the coleslaw in the burger. On the side I forgot to eat it. Roast spuds were a nice change to chips. Unfortunately my friend’s coffee order was forgotten.

Pop in a weekend morning and found the place really chill. Totally recommend coming to try the food, also they do great coffee. I recommend the crab scramble 😋 - great price & serving size.

They also double as a small grocer too!
Kate Dougherty
Cute cafe with great little courtyard out the back. I went for the zucchini and corn fritters with pea purée, a poached egg and bacon. The fritters were really tasty and were super cheesy which was a nice surprise. A very generous portion size too.

Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff,, outdoor eating area makes it dog friendly, green smoothies to die for and fruit toast that will keep us coming back for more.

My 3 Key Pointers
* I feel at home
* No fuss, simple and that’s all you need sometimes
* Love the juice options

There is something that keeps me coming back. Is the food amazing no but it’s good and never had anything bad, the coffee is good, the juice is good the sandwich options are good. The decor is extremely paired back and nothing flash. Ohhhh wait the service Is really good and I have never had anyone that was not warm and welcoming. That’s what keeps me coming through the door.

This place seemed to have a lot of the overspill from three bags full and au79. We had the big breakfast and the potato hash with poached eggs and mushrooms. The potato hash was a bit bland band and lacked punch. Friendly service.
Disommer
Genuinely fabulous Sunday brunch in the sun. Full points for comfort, staff friendliness and menu creativity. We had the vitality bowl with perfectly balanced textures and flavours. The skilled chef added extra touches like char grilling the bok choy. The zucchini and freekah fritters were divine. Loved everything about them including the plate licking onion jam. Very generous serves too. Best brekky this year. Bloody loved it and we'll be back.
You.lady.you
Service was vague. Our order for one breakfast and one jaffle had to be repeated several times, then made twice as the jaffle filling was wrong.. and neither of our coffees were great. We were sitting right by the kitchen and could see the chef getting more and more annoyed with the waitstaff as his meals sat cooling, waiting to be taken out - including ours - dinging the bell to no avail. It seemed like the two guys behind the counter were having a great time chatting with each other so that's nice.

Great little, unpretentious cafe. Music is always amazing! Keep up the happy vibes!!! Particularly enjoy the gorgeous garden, fresh food and they make a great brew.
Cards And Cafes
Mavis the Grocer is located in Abbotsford on the site of an old milk bar. This simple café is warm and welcoming and the beautiful windows allow all the natural light to flood in. Sitting at the window is just place to relax on your days off and watch the world go by. Walking in, you automatically feel welcome and you can’t wait to sit down and enjoy a nice hot cup of coffee.....
Dam Burger
Came here for lunch, cafe looks nice and relaxed on inside but music too loud. Food is very limited in selection. I chose the chicken and Kim chi sandwich, grained bread was great but chicken average. Berry smoothie was ok, pretty small for $10
Christina Mathiasz
Been here 3 times now and unfortunately each time I was disappointed. First time I had eggs Benedict, which came with apple puree, soaked into and on top of my dry bun. Second time, I had the beef burger and whilst the burger was delicious, it came with all of 3 rosemary chips. The last time, I had the avo and zucchini tartare. Unfortunately the tartare was lacking in flavour and the dish just didn't mesh well together. I might have to pass this place by from now on.
Julie
Dropped by for brunch on a Sunday - busy but not crowded, we got a seat straight away. Service was friendly and down-to-earth. They had run out of the beef for the reuben so I had the salmon tartare instead. Delicious, light, good mix of flavours and textures, subtle and perfect for a lazy brunch. Egg was poached perfectly. A generous serving.
Lani Irene
Just went here for a OJ and a small coffee, both were nice no complaints about the quality but shocked when we went to pay and the total came to $14!! What a joke!
James Twohill
The staff is really friendly, the food is great and the tunes are on point. I had the seafood linguini the other day and it was incredible. For breakfast, I can't go past their potato and cheese omelette with a side of the best bacon you've ever had.
Joekav82
Great staff, great tunes, great coffee... did I say great...👍 Fantastic take away sanga's. Cool courtyard. Get around little Mavis! ;););)
David Stephan
Lunch here today was the absolute worst I have had in 10 years in Melbourne.
Revolting. The food was saturated in salt, completely inedible. The cook should be ashamed of himself. They failed to deliver two dishes to our table until we indicated.
Never again! You have been warned.
Kelly Belly
Food generally reliable. Service less so. The Mavis breakfast special is recommended - bacon, eggs, sausages and all the trimmings. Get a second plate of poached eggs and toast and you have a value breakfast for two.
Katie O'Keeffe
The food and coffee here are good but the service is so slow. Don't come in here if you've got things to do afterwards or if you've got kids who will only sit still for a short period of time. If you're having a lazy weekend morning and happy to sit and read the paper and hang out then it's probably ok.
Hisham Albakri
My first time to Mavis today. Always drove past so why not give a shot. Dude making coffee was less than friendly in his tone. Like he's so busy making one coffee that he has no time to offer me a sit first. My soy latte was not Melbourne standard. I looked over the next table to this guy and his cofee did not look good either. Ordered the brown rice with pickled veg, tofu, egg and miso. Nice but average quality for the price charged. Guy who took my order and payment was friendly though. Asked if I wanted a 2nd coffee. I said no. Plenty of competitive cafes around in this price range. Probs would not come back. Ill stick to Cibi in Collingwood.
Mavis has a great feel, homey vibes in a trendy and lively area, good coffee, great food and good service, keep up the work, thanks for the coffee and service, will be back soon

This place has returned to form. Coffee great, food is good - had a great salad. Service is consistently good. Parking is also good in this quiet neck of the woods.

I drive past daily and I often wonder why it's not packed, So I thought I'd give it a go. What a waste of time and money. I'll set the scene it's a Saturday around lunch time it's not overly busy there's tables free outside the back and on the street. I was greeted and directed to the communal table which is fine as I was flying solo. No menus, no water I'm watching the staff, waiting, waiting they are busy chatting to each other behind the counter, playing with the music and the manager I would presume he was just sort of flitting about. Finally a girl notices me waving to get started I ordered, food came out it was ok however they are charging south Yarra breaky prices for something that's nowhere on par, forget the second coffee no one is coming back to take that order I went up to pay and once again the same staff are standing their doing sweet F all chatting while the same girl who noticed me originally once again is the only one to notice me wanting to pay my bill I would say she's probably the newest member judging by her actual intent on working and not socialising instead of serving the customers. Would not Bother going back to this place unless the staff got a serious boot up there butts- go to 3 bags full
Timinmelbourne
My friend and I visited this cafe for the first time and WOW! The food was really really good, amazing in fact.

The coffee was good, I had a trout pancake with herbs etc and it was delicious. My friend had the omelette which was humungous hahahaha but both meals were polished off.

The service was friendly and this is one place that I'll definitely be going back to. Oh and the chilli oil was fantastic!
LittleMissPiggy
Went for breaky during the week and wasn't disappointed... The food was delicious, the baked eggs are massive super tasty, my friend got the pancakes which were much too small but good flavour none the less.
The coffee was good but on the cold size. The staff were super friendly but a little slow, and the prices are very reasonable. The outdoor area is massive and they have outdoor heaters of its a little cold. Would give it another go.

I've had mixed experiences with this little cafe in abbotsford. Great coffee always that's true. But I think I always came in their busiest times. Food is good enough to give it another chance.
Tracy Abbott
Staff very attentive, great atmosphere, staff were willing to move us to another table when we asked. Food was amazing (both had the Pancakes) and very generous portions! Coffee was nice. Will be happy to return
Heidi
To be fair I probably ordered badly and not entirely to my taste! I had the fritters with avocado, goats curd and poached eggs. The eggs and toast were nice, the advocado maybe needed more dressing, maybe balsamic? But the fritters weren't cooked very well, they were still very mushy inside and not in a good way. In saying this my bf ordered the toastie with a fried egg (which he let me try) and it was quite good.

The al dente penne with oxtail ragu and carrot was too interesting to pass. They deviate from the "big crockery, little food" presentation so the serves look small - until you try to eat them and realise your eyes were deceived. My friends enjoyed their burger and pork & fennel sausages. The hot chocolate was too watery and bland for my taste.
Demeter
Just plain RUDE!
Next time (not that there's going to be) just throw the coffee at me.
I know I don't know what's going on in your world but you don't have to bring me down too.
Melbournefoodaddict
Just terrible! The customer service is some of the worst I've ever seen and the coffee is terrible - not Melbourne standard at all. Get new staff and sort your coffee out, pronto!

Walked in to a lovely setting, ordered breakfast as per usual. Took them 20minutes to heat up a cheese and ham croissant, also my partner ordered a fresh coconut and the lady made an orange juice, she said "oh I must have heard wrong", after 20minutes of waiting I had left the shop and realised that I didn't get given the coconut but the croissant. So I then had to walk all the way back and tell her about the coconut I was missing and she started pouring the orange juice again. I feel that this person needs to listen to her customers properly and focus on them more. That is all
Melomie 12
Nice seven seeds coffee. The menu shrunk since they first opened, shame because their vege options used to be better. Also, extraordinarily vague service. If you want something specific, be specific, because they ain't going out of their way to help you.
Coffee And Food
Is quite a while since @mavisthegrocer opened their door and bringing in good products such as coffee by @7seedscoffee ☕ and chocolate by @morkchocolate 🍵 ntg can go wrong with the trendy crowd at Abbotsford but customer service on the register need to be better. As was standing to put in my order but was not acknowledged by the man behind the counter. Had a good take away coffee by seven seeds house blend to start my day in the city. Might go in for breakfast one day 📍

A quaint little lhidden gem in the back streets of abbottsford. Had the pleasure of trying an iced coffee. True to its form, a straight shot of expresso over ice and milk. If u like ur iced coffee creamy dont get it from here! Lovely for strong coffee lovers. Look forward to coming back to try the food
Mumneedscoffee
Lovely space! Service was prompt, if a little robotic. Coffee was a bit cold though. I think they were having trouble with the machine. But all in all, a nice cafe in a tucked away apart of Abbotsford

Update Aug 2017: thank you for listening to customer feedback. I very much enjoyed my large coffee on the weekend and will return again. It was a lovely surprise when I dropped in to meet a friend to see you now have mugs 👍🏼

Previous review:
Mavis the Grocer is a new cafe in my area. The food is pretty good and the staff friendly. There is plenty of seating out in the back courtyard which consists mainly of small stools.
They have however succumbed to the theory that they know what the customer wants better than the customer so if you are after a coffee that doesn't meet their limited range than you can forget it. No large sizes, no mugs, no skinny milk. Whatever happened to customer service?
The coffee is good - but paying $16 for 2 people because you have to order 2 coffees each in order to satisfy your morning coffee addiction is a bit steep.
Unfortunately for this reason alone I probably won't be rushing back.

Lovely new addition to the Abbotsford brunch scene., with a great little courtyard and good ambience. Four of us had a nice brunch, ordering Brioche French toast with baked peaches, Bubble and Squeak, Salmon Croquettes and Poached eggs with mushrooms. The food was nice and staff friendly, but there was some confusion with our orders and one person ended up eating after the rest of us. Portion size is good, but sides are ridiculously pricy, with a small bowl of mushrooms costing an extra $5 and bacon on the side adding $6!! The approach to local, organic produce is applaudable and quality of ingredients good.

Back several times since my first review and sadly have seen the price of sides continue to rise (above prices now current). Have dropped my rating by 0.5 as a result.
Chasing A Plate
Posted by Chasing a Plate in Abbotsford on 05/10/2015. We’re loving the rise of the corner store cum eatery where you can grab a coffee and bowl of porridge or a glass of wine and a sandwich before picking up a packet of pasta and a loaf of homemade sourdough for home on the way out. Mavis the Grocer in Abbotsford is one of the new kids on the block, an all day eatery and a small grocery combined in one- it seems locals are loving it. Its ethos is admirable- local, sustainable, seasonal or organic produce is used and there is a conscious effort to minimise waste and to promote ethical and environmentally friendly practices. It’s a business worth supporting.

I really like this happy corner cafe/eatery. I really do. It just resonates happiness. Perhaps it's the bright yellow walls, spacious interior, lots of natural light and the 70s Foxy Brown font-signage that just brings everything together.

It goes without saying the coffee is decent. Next the food. The food is like wow! Ok maybe not your standard brunch/lunch menu but with a healthy twist. Lots of salad and super juices. That aside, we had the linguine and meatball with sugo (slow cooked tomato sauce with onions for stirring into pasta) and the toasted beef sandwich with kale salad. Good serving, non-pretentious and very fresh ingredients. I personally recommend adding a dash of their dried chili infused oil into the pasta for an extra flavor dimension. The sandwich was hearty and goes well with the accompanying habanero or jalapeño sauce.

All of the above would have rated a 4. However for me, Mavis deserves an extra 1 for it's parking-friendly location, generous seating, very attentive and friendly staff and very, very down-to-earth pricing. Highly recommended 👍🏼

We have been to Mavis many times and we have come to realise that some of the staff are just not that friendly. My first comment leaving breakfast this morning was 'the staff here are just so rude'. Being customers who have waited at this establishment for over an hour and half for food you think they would want to be attentive and friendly. A smile goes a long way Mavis.

Importantly, good coffee (seven seeds) and good food. We have enjoyed the spicy beans, pork sandwich and poached eggs with bacon, avocado and feta. Our only changes to these meals would be the avocado and feta. We much preferred what is on offer at ThreeBags Full and Bluebird. Steer clear of the muesli, almost better getting a bag from the shops.
Came in here for breakfast this morning. Another cool looking cafe in Abbotsford.

Decided to go for the Salmon Confit. Salmon was cooked perfectly and so was the egg. With the potato cake and lemon it tasted really good. Was really happy with my meal.

Also tried my friends spicy beans and they were also really tasty.

Unfortunately the coffee wasn't up to scratch for Melbourne.
