Review Thaiger Rabbit - Abbotsford

Prissyca Prasetyo
Foods are really good with the reasonable price and generous portion. Too bad the waiting time take quiet a while. Ambience of the restaurant is nice if its not busy, but if it's busy I can day it's quiet cramped. They have 2 floors but I'm guessing they open the 2nd floor only during peak hours. We came on Saturday afternoon and almost all the tables were full. It's a bit cramped. Only 1 girl working in the front and also only q people working in the kitchen I think that's why foods came out quiet a while. But the restaurant decorated with Thailand's authentic decorations that are really cute.

This place is one of our favourites Thai Restaurants in Melbourne - it never fail to impress regardless how busy they get šŸ˜ A must try if you are in the area šŸ‘

Friendly staffs and the foods are superb with thai authenticity tastes! Definitely recommend.

I go here with my friends about once a week. We love the "Crying Tiger" spicy beef & I always pair it with the delicious coconut rice. I may only order one dish every time but it's always refreshing and tasty. Staff are always so kind and welcoming to us!

Outrageously good. Our group sampled the green and red curries, pad kee now and sliced chicken with coconut rice and ice cream for dessert. Beat Thai I've had in a long while!

Thank you šŸ„° we had good food, wonderful service... we ordered diffetent kinds of foods, from soup, to noodle, basil chicken, etc... everything was delicious. We loved it. Had great lunch. šŸ¤©
Hello. imnikki
The Tom Yum soup would have been perfect if not for the overpowering taste of the lemongrass. There were hints of sweetness, spiciness and sourness, underneath all that lemongrass-ness. The seafood was reasonably fresh, and cooked well. The thin and flat slices of beef in the red curry were a bit disappointing, as they were more suited for stir fries rather than curries. On the bright side, the curry sauce was not just flavourful, but smooth and creamy. The roti wasn't crisped enough, and was too soft even before soaking up the curry. I haven't had a pineapple fried rice in a long time, and this one brought back all the feels. The sweet and zesty flavours imparted from the pineapple was delightful, and overall it was well-seasoned. Decent Thai feed in Richmond. Friendly service all around.

Inviting warm atmosphere with service to match. Happy to come back to sample more of menu. The Jaow Samut (combo of deep fried fish, prawn and crab balls) were a highlight. All noodle dishes can be upsized as was our Pad See Eww, good flavours but could do with slightly more wok char. Pud Graprow was spot on - a bit cheeky to charge extra for plain rice when the dish should come with it. Thaiger Rabbit 'secret recipe' cocktail taste of chrysanthemum tea, mild at first but has an after kick to it later.

Great Thai restaurant on Victoria Street and they are founded by the same owners as Ying Thai. They focus on home style Thai cuisine with big flavours. We ordered dishes and the pad kra pao was a favourite that night. Love the authentic flavours and do let them know if you are not a spicy fan as it can get quite spicy

Very friendly staff. Food came out quickly! We had a big group of 8, which they catered to efficiently. I really recommend the red curry, green curry, roti, and the pad thai.

Amazing food, taste like food I have in Thailand. It really take me back home. Staff are friendly and polite. Service is second to none. Love this place. Thank you for cooking such a great meal for us.

We had our farewell lunch for our colleague here today and we all have nice things to say. There were 12 of us whose different preferences were accommodated by the restaurant to the best of their ability. Waiting time is reasonable and allowed us to appreciate the ambiance. We didn't pass the chance to have a group picture with the nice Thai interior decor in the background.Ā The food is awesome! We had curries, salads, and noodle soups and the group would love to go there again.

One of the most authentic Thai food in Melbourne. Eating in is more worth it than ordering it as the portion seem to reduce by half. If you canā€™t take spice, let them know. But overall, best Thai Iā€™ve had in Melbourne
Hello. Imnikki
3.5

What brought us to Thaiger Rabbit was just sheer coincidence. We were after Vietnamese food but ended up parking right in front of Thaiger Rabbit, so we decided to just try them instead. We were lucky we came early though, as the place filled up quickly after we started our meal.

In order to appease both our chilli tolerance level, my partner and I reached an agreement to order a spicy dish (seafood Tom Yum), a mild dish (red curry with beef), and a non-spicy dish (pineapple fried rice with chicken.

The Tom Yum soup would have been perfect if not for the overpowering taste of the lemongrass. There were hints of sweetness, spiciness and sourness, underneath all that lemongrass-ness. We went into this restaurant by its name relationship with Ying Thai and it certainly did not disappoint. Very familiar authentic flavours and chilli hotness from the Ying Thai era. Great lunch menu for group gathering and great atmosphere.

What started out with a takeaway order ended up with a visit the following week to try in person. I had the beef combination noodle soup and prawn salad with sweet chilli sauce and lemon grass. Good. Portion size not great.
The restaurant is nicely decorated and had a good vibe. Alas, the service was substandard. One person looking after everything. Poor woman was rushed off her feet and although trying her best she was clearly not coping. Menu is extensive and the food is food but really Iā€™ve had better. So the ambience was what kept this review at a 3 instead of a 2.
Not really wheelchair friendly. Quite a small restaurant. Parking is always a challenge in Smith Street but be patient. Impressive takeaway menu - almost a novel itā€™s so thick and includes pictures of each dish.

DONT BOTHER GOING HERETerrible service, takes over an hour to get your food, and then they give you the wrong food. Biggest waste of time and money. So many better thai places on Victoria Street, do not go here.

2.5

I had the lunch special here today. Reasonable price. 15aud meal offering a main, a fried pieces(I ordered fried chicken wing and itā€™s served in the plate together with my meal and a drink.. Overly spicy but not very tasty.. also the milk tea is tasteless..

poor service. one waitress only for Saturday lunch time. we were served at the upper and once we have set in and ordered, we were asked to move down stairs with a group of eight included three kids. we were kind enough the drop the number in the menu and bring to the cashier to place order. It makes me feel I am in a food court. The waitress had no idea of what the number are referring to in the menu? Very unprofessional she was. Order noodle soup and have to wait for 30 minutes ? Taste was not any special. I will not come back again.

Ok, thatā€™s it, shut up, discussion over, this is the best Thai experience in Melbourne. Itā€™s the Sgt. Peppers of Thai Food. Extra rich flavours, inexpensive, the menu has both crowd pleasers and bold new unknowns. Eat at this restaurant.
Jazmine Gallate
Another one of our favourite Thai places in this city. We have been here twice with groups of friends and have been treated with care and kindness by staff members. Food has always been super fresh and tastes just like real Thai food should.
Youngk
Food is on the sweeter side but not bad and large portion side. Service is just okay, you sort of have to get attention every time you need something even thereā€™s about 2 or 3 tables in the entire restaurant.

First class service, amazing food. It was a wonderful evening. I was very impressed by how friendly and helpful the staff were. The food was very fresh, very well presented and tasted amazing.
I highly recommend giving Thaiger Rabbit a visit.

First class experience. Thank you!

Good food a little busy so the service was slow , but definitely come back for the food! must try chicken in banana leaves and duck salad, iced thai coffee and coconut float

The interesting and whimsical decor does not translate well to the food on offer in this relative new restaurant on Victoria Street. The food we chose was either bland or overpowered by the taste of chilli paste. Service was a bit chaotic but friendly.
Vincent Xie
Ordered the pad thai which was too sweet. The green curry was 99.9% water. Terrible slow service and overpriced. Poor communication skills. Bonus credit card surcharge.
James Reitmaier
Great food and reasonably priced as well. A little bit cramped inside, but otherwise beautiful set up. Would definitely eat there again. Thanks for the lovely food :)
Jenny
Terrible service
First got my order wrong, finally got my food when everyoneā€™s finished eating
Then claim eftpos not working and will not let us leave the restaurant (to withdraw cash)
Gwen Kwan
Ordered pad thai lunch combo, beef pad thai+fish cake+Sunkist. It took them 25+ minutes to cook it even I am the only customer during lunch time, I will not recommend anyone go there for a quick lunch. Pad thai is too sweet, not the usual pad thai I had in other thai place. Service is really poor, they cannot even serve a iced lemon tea without ice in this cold day, as it is not on the menu!!
Foodlover12
Lovely Thai place in Richmond. Decent Thai food at reasonable price. Place is small but cozy, staffs are very attentive and food arrive promptly. We tried 2
Dishes, the egg omelette soup and the stir fry brocolli with crispy pork belly, both were tasty.
Vanessa
*3.5 stars** If youā€™re feeling like authentic Thai cuisine, this place does a good job of it. The food is full of flavour and the portion sizes are just right. Inside, the tables are close together making it a little awkward to walk around. The interior decoration has quite a lot going on - from hanging lamps to custom plate frames, to even small Thai statues. The wooden backdrop also happens to set a certain laid back mood to the atmosphere. Overall, a nice place to dine. Service is quick. Staff arenā€™t very friendly but theyā€™re efficient.
Laurenp_oz
This was some of the nicest Thai I have eaten here in Melbourne! After a little wait post-ordering we thoroughly enjoyed Tod Mun Pla, Soft Shell Crab Som Tum and Chicken Jungle Curry. A mistake with the entree was promptly corrected and the dish given gratis. Faultless and I canā€™t wait to go back and try more!!
Cherie šŸ’
Tried this by ordering from ubereat. Great portion and delicious. We ordered the soft shell crab fried rice and pad Thai with duck. Both taste really great however I do wish they are less salty. Definitely trying other dishes soon!
Snowflower
Polite and gentle service. Ordered the soft shell crab fried rice which was great. Would be better if the soft shell crabs were less salty, but overall still good. Also ordered chilli and basil rice with Thai fish cake. Thai fish cake was a tad salty, but the rest were great. Thai tea was very sweet. Would still give it 4/5. Quiet and nice ambience.
Crobins27121976
Overall it was ok.
However being over charged by $25 makes it a disappointing experience.
$90 for Tom yum, fried fish fillet, soft shell papaya and deep fried fish balls with rice is not great value...food was ok. But I will stick with my other local regular.

Would recommend the Thai Green Curry, Yum Woon Sen, Fried Rice w Sour Pork and the Tomyum seafood soup! If you like spice that is!

Disappointed with - the Pad Thai as the noodles were still undercooked. -The Papaya salad cause they rated the spiciness level with 3 chillis but it wasn't spicy nor was there much flavour to it. -Also the chicken wrapped in pandan leaves were too dry.
Luisa Reid
The worst Pad Thai l have ever had!! Sloppy consistency, thigh chunks instead of breast and covered in a sauceĀ thatĀ l question, was from out of a jar, sloshed together, with what l think was sweet chilli sauce ..peanuts and bean shoots mashed in with it..had to inspect it to see if there wasĀ even any added..?? No crispy element and where was the lime to squeeze on top...?

From Thailand, orĀ any Thai restaurant around the world or in Australia its my go to dish! How could they get it so wrong...!
Lu Lu
Really delicious Thai food sharing with friends! Highly Recommend Mild red curry (duck), Green Curry, Thai milk tea and cocoanut sticky rice ! I will Definitely come back to eat more šŸ˜„
Hungry_One
Nup. Bland, boring, expensive. Pandan chicken with no sauce, probably the worst Pad See Ew Iā€™ve ever had, a disingenuous serve of roti, gluggy rice and sub par stir fries. $90 for 1 entree, noodles, 1 stir fry, rice and 2 beers. Go to Jinda Thai and wait for a table. So much better.
Loving Good Food
I always a big fan of YING Thai & Family. Tried Thaiger rabbit (even when it was YING THAI 1) multiple times and always been liking it. After a long time havent visited them i decided to get a take away of Pad Gra Paow with Mince Chicken, which has been my all time favourite. Came home with an excitement and found chewy chicken skin in my food. Started to wonder had a quick look again, they are everywhere. All these part is a maryland that has been finely chopped NOT MINCE Chicken as what it should be and advertised on the menu. I felt gross as i dont like the texture of chewy skin that i had in my mouth. After a spoonful of it, food ended up in the bin. Uncertain whether they ran out of mince chicken or food standard getting downhill. Will stop my self of going back again. I had a high hope of having my favourite food to big disappointment.

Very mixed reviews on here! I came here at lunch and there was a 15$ menu which included main, one piece of entree eg spring roll and a drink (soft drinks or milk teas etc) My experience of food was delicious. I got the beef noodle soup which was flavoursome , thai ice coffee pretty refreshing on a hot day and spring roll which was tasty. The lunch deal was very filling and generous on noodle soup size. Service however was pretty slow for a lunch time especially when there wasnā€™t too many patrons.
Would come back again to try other things on menu
Li
The service is slow and unattantive, we ordered Grilled beef salad (meat so hard and chewy, they gave only lettuce and onion); sticky rice (so dry and crunchy) ; crispy pork stir fry with lime leaves (good flavour); padthai (no too impressive)
We also ordered Thai milk tea and pork sausages, but unfortunately they forgot about it and not say sorry at all, instead gave us free milk teašŸ˜‚..

I won't come back again, better go somewhere else.. WORST service of food ever experienced. We had just ordered $45 of take away food, firstly we were surprised to find the bag full of liquid, napkin soaked. Only 2 of 3 orders arrived and the food that arrived was dismal to say the least. The squid salad would have been 1/2 cup worth of food in total, both with very little salad at all. For $16 each this was a HUGE disappointment. To make it worse when we phoned the restaurant to find out what was going on the lady that answered completely brushed off conversation in a hurry replying 'we will send the rice' then hung up on us. Poor form Thaiger Rabbit!

Love the pork skin salad, so crunchy and yummy. The duck fried rice is also delicious. The crispy chicken wings are also fabulous. Love the chili flakes too..soo spicy. The downside is the thai iced coffee taste so bad...100% syrup. Didn't finish it. I prefer water
Linda
This place is mediocre. Pad thai and pad see ew were pleasant for a quick feed but standard. Chicken was succulent and tender. One thing that did catch my attention was that there was sliced orange in the dishes, which I found a bit strange and funny! Staff were friendly and the chairs were covered in cute, I'd say santa outfits which definitely brought out the Christmas spirit in me!

Was looking forward to a really good experience, and unfortunately was let down by poor service.

We ordered a vegetarian green curry, which was good, and a vegetarian Tom Yum soup. The Tom Yum came out smelling fishy (no pun intended), so we asked if it had fish sauce - to which they replied yes.

We said that we can't really eat it so we asked to replace it with a red curry (we hadn't touched the soup). They left the soup on the table, which we thought was weird, and brought us a red curry, good as well.

The next time we got service I asked if they could take the soup as we didn't want it but it was brought back 5 minutes later in a takeaway pack, and the waitress quickly left before I could say anything.

When I went up to the counter and asked what was going on, they said I had to pay for it because I didn't ask for it vegan - I said clearly that we wanted a vegetarian soup, and since fish isn't vegetarian, it wasn't what I ordered. What followed was an argument about whether or not their vegetable Tom Yum had fish sauce - I said it's irrelevant, vegetarians don't eat fish, so the wait staff should note whether a vegetable or vegetarian dish is ordered.

I went to sat down and we quickly finished - they ended up removing he untouched soup from the bill, which is why this isn't a 1 star review!

Also there's a weird call button for service and the staff all sit on their phones barely checking the floor.

It's unfortunate but the place has potential - the staff just need to be a bit more customer focused and attentive.

Good food and nice place to eat in. Been here couple of time but only this time order the beef ball soup after they moved and changed their name to Thaiger Rabbit! Service is good and they provide a bell to call up the staff just in case they don't see you. Will definitely come here again
Hungry Panda
The noodles here are quite tasty, and be careful because when it says hot, they mean hot! Other dishes are pretty nice, although the meat beef was a bit chewy.

A few negatives: our curry took almost an hour to come, by which time we had to cancel it and leave. The waitress only told us at this point that curries take a long time to cook. If this was the case, they should've told us from the start so we knew not to order it, and even then 1 hour is quite ridiculous! The service is also not the best, and we could hear the staff yelling at each other in Thai from the restaurant counter to the kitchen. This ruined the atmosphere a bit, especially as the place is so small. The milk tea is expensive and just does not taste right.

Overall I would come back for the decently priced noodles (and the spice) but not in a hurry to try the other dishes.
Elonie
I liked the Thai milk tea and the Thai style cups and water jugs. I ordered the Num Tok (grilled beef salad) but it only had small amount of chunky cabbages. It looked more like a beef dish than a salad dish. It'll be better if the cabbages are thinly slices. The beef was plentiful and tasty even if it's a bit too chilli hot to my liking.
Timinmelbourne
My friend and I went here earlier tonight. The restaurant was really quiet until a pizza delivery guy dropped in delivering pizzas haha I've not seen that before!

As for the food the menu was pretty extensive aka we got a 1 page specials menu which we ordered from.

We had curry puffs, which were soooo feekin hot!! OMGOSH!! They were tasty ... eventually lol

I ordered the pork belly w chilli and lime leaves. I thought my plate was eaten before it was sent to the table. The pork was pretty scarce on the plate but what was, tasted alright, but not amazing.

My friend had the deep fried soft shell crab which was quite amazing and delicious! The batter was light and crispy. Yummm

For drinks we had a Thai style iced lemon tea, d although we only ordered 1 drink we got 2 lol. All good.

Overall the food and service was ok.

Honestly, i was thrilled when i saw "by Ying Thai" on the sign. By the end of the night, i was disappointed a restaurant with such low quality was brought by Ying Thai.

We ordered the satay, spring rolls, pandan chicken, crab curry, green curry, and minced pork.

The satay was bland, spring rolls were okay, minced pork was nice.

The green curry had 75% curry soup and mostly vegetables, with only 4-5 pieces of meat. You got to be kidding me?! I paid a ridiculous price to get curry sauce and veggies.

NOW it gets worse, the crab curry i ordered had literally NO MEAT! I was breaking every single ridiculous shell of the crab to find shrinked up dried up meat that is definitely not worth its price! THANK YOU for charging me a price basically for crab shells and veggies once again!

AND NOW for the worst part of all. We ordered 2 servings of chicken pandan. When i could not expect things to get worse, they do! The chicken we got was RAW! The centre was still disgusting and definitely inedible. When we brought this up to the waitress, she looked annoyed and quickly ran with one of the chicken pandan dish. We quickly opened the second dish only to find that it too was RAW!!! When we called her back, we literally had to yell as maybe she intentionally wanted to run from this embarassment.

We were given the chicken pandan dishes again, but all have lost appetite and the second batch was very oily and dry (undercook does not work so why not overcook it?!). When we paid, they literally had no comment or any sense of remorse of this ridiculously bad quality and service.

If you want to spend money on small portions, full of veggies and food poisonong from raw chicken, i suggest you come here! If not, i suggest you run away.

Got takeaway for the first time from here via ubereats, and was very disappointed. Chilli beef had a nice flavour but was chewy to the point of needing a knife and fork to cut it into small portions, red curry had too-sickly-sweet coconut milk and similarly too-tough beef, and the pad Thai was entirely forgettable.
Lisa Giles
Extensive menu, but the quality of the food wasn't that impressive. The red curry flavour was good, but the beef was chewy and tough. The pad Thai was dry and not as flavoursome as other ones I've tried. I have high expectations when it comes to Thai food, and this unfortunately didn't meet the bar.
We Nomz
Ordered their deep fried whole fish barramundi topped with special chilli sauce. The fish was a little dry - perhaps fried too long, special chilli sauce was alright. Their beef pad thai was not too bad. Their stir fried crispy pork with chilli paste and lime leaves from their special menu was nice, had a good flavour - would recommend. Service could be better. Ordered fried rice and waited too long for it only to find out that the waiter had forgotten to order it for us.

Been here many times with my partner and last night was the worst. The porting smaller than we used to get and the service was very poor last night.
Hisham
I have been to this restaurant several times before. Tonight the restaurant was not busy. The meal took 40 minutes and the portions were small. The service was poor, we needed to get our own cutlery and replenish the water several times. I will not come here again .
Jeffry
The place was really nice and cozy. It's very easy to find the place. The service wasn't so good. At that time we were sitting in the upstairs and no one looked after us. We couldn't order additional dish nor got our bottle of water refilled.
The worst part was the waiting time for the food to come *almost 45 mins

We ordered the same dishes as what we ordered "tom yum ta-lay" and "kao pud" (Thai fried rice).
The price wise was average, and the dishes were not bad.
Choc Pudding
A nice looking place, and menu was extensive. I have never seen so many choices of salads in Thai restaurant! We had pad thai and stir fry chinese broccoli and crispy pork. The portions were generous for the price. The quality of the food was a letdown though. Out of many thai restaurants I have been to, I think this is the second Thai place that I found cannot really make proper pad thai. It did not have any nutty taste that makes pad thai special, and the sauce has this quite spicy and sweet taste. The fried egg that they put on top worked quite well with the noodle, but still, I would not call it pad thai. The stir fry was tasty like most stir fries in thai restaurants, but the amount of oil they put was rather crazy. I guess this place would be good if you want a cheap eat with big portion. But I would not go back.
I S2 Food
Nice little establishment with modern decor. The papaya salad was extremely spicy and not enjoyable heat even for us who always loves to eat spicy foods. Probably a good idea to advise customer when they order how hot it is. Green curry was nice.
Ck
Seriously poor chicken used - lots of gristle. Pad thai was very sweet and just didn't taste like any I have had in the past. Tom yum was nice apart from the meat
Thi Han Kyaw
Food took quite a while to come and the portions were small despite the relatively steep price. I felt that the curries, especially, were quite messily presented but tasted reasonable. Another thing about the curries is that the amount of meat to curry sauce ratio is out of proportion - at most a couple pieces of chicken or prawns (for the yellow seafood curry we ordered) compared to all the sauce inside. The Tom Yum soup was a major disappointment due to the fact that it tasted like it came out of some soup stock and it never really ended up boiling in the mini boilers that it was presented in. However, the coconut rice was rather authentic and tasted really great. If there's anything I can recommend, it'll be the Fish dishes; they're all great and taste quite exotic and fresh. Last thing to note is the service; all the waitresses were (presumably) native Thais and their grasp of English was quite limited. It took quite a lot of effort to communicate a simple request of two small bowls.
LifestyleByLily
Wasn't impressed with the green curry from here. The portion size was large but it was mainly curry sauce.
The chicken was seriously lacking and a cheap cut of chicken, it definitely wasn't chicken fillet, it was stringy and chewy. Not enjoyable at all and wouldnt order from here again.
Bella
Very disappointed !!! Dont recommend this place at all. They dont really pay attention to the extra detail I gave. I asked for spicy. I got it with no chilli at all! I asked for beef instead of pork but i still got pork. Plus the stir fried was too salty! Chefs need to pay more attention to small details of food. For example, the size of Ka-nar In the stir fried I ordered was way tooooooo big. I felt like I ate the whole big plants of it. I at the end had to chop it smaller!
Sheldonsmail
Took a long time to come the chicken dish had 5 pieces of children 2 carrots 2 broccoli in a sea of sauce. The salad was simply revolting drenched in fish sauce and the rice was a ball of glug. The spring rolls were good but $9.90 for 4 small. Overpriced and a never again ever experience.
Mistletoe
Found this place only because Jinda Thai was not opened. And boy, am I glad we did!

Service was quick and friendly. Food was tantalizing, balanced in flavors, oh so generous, and wonderfully done. The steam fish was really spicy - which I love. Lard na noodles, though not as good as other places, was not too bad after some additional fish sauce and chili flakes were added in.

Yellow seafood curry was yummeh! Would definitely come back again. After all, price wise - they are really reasonable too!
Fifi
Lovely food, some old Thai favourites with some surprises. Biggest surprise? Receiving mains before entrees.... is this a new trendy thing? I'm unsure
Mackie
Decent food, super hot if you like spicy. Major let down was when they took payments twice for our table. Came in with a group of people, member 1 paid and took payment again from member 2. Only realised that they've taken payments twice when member 3 said let's get the bill and I'm sure they'll take payment again.

One of my favourite Thai places in Melbourne. All the food we ordered was great. Full of flavour and fresh. The decor is phenomenal and the waiting staff always on the ball and attentive. I definitely left with a satisfied tummy. If you like Thai food then do yourself a favour and check out this place
Amimi
Hotness(x10)!! Sourness!! This is the place for it! It has many Thai dishes that are not commonly available in other Thai restaurants. Ā Desserts are worth giving a try. Ā Inside is trendy wooden decor with plenty of seatings.
Hendry Hendoro
Our favourite Thai joint in Melbourne by far. Been coming for many years now (since when they were called Ying Thai). The crackling skin pork salad, pad thai & tom yum are some of my favourites. Way tastier than the much busier Jinda down the road. Ask for less spicy of you can't take things hot. The only downside is they do cash only. Quite annoying when a dish is $20-$30..
James
Not very authentic taste, delivery took ages, and quite small portion sizes for some dishes.. not the worst thai ive had but I'll stick to jinda which is just down the road and always amazing
Mards
Have ordered twice from here, had high expectations but was underwhelmed each time. Ordered stir fried garlic and pepper with duck, under the impression that it would come with vegetables as most stir fries do but instead got a very large serve of mediocre duck that was completely overpowered by garlic and pepper. For the price I expected much better than a hastily thrown together dish of bland duck, raw garlic and a little sauce.
ALWAYS HUNGRY
I really wanted to like this place so much more. Vibe and decor was good, staff were very friendly. Food was a let down, lacking in real Thai flavour. We ordered a chicken pud see-ew and the pud num mun hoy with beef, the beef was on the chewy side which is never nice and we received a little extra protein in the form of a bug. Staff were apologetic and did not charge us for the dish.
Ammy Elle
Delicious, Affordable but SODIUM CRAZED. Like seriously I had lemonade AND juice AND a water craving driving home. It was madness....

Been here and had the whole steamed fish and both times it's been quite good mostly because I love fish and they steam it very well it's never tough and always soft. But anyway- yeah worth trying! Also had the tom yum soup which was super tasty. I gave the stir fried seafood in yellow curry a go as well but this just tasted like curry paste- that's how salty it was. Next time I would definitely opt for the usual green curry.

Coconut rice was a bit average- low on the coconut fragrance unfortunately.

Overall food is really nice, and the decor is pretty cool. Service was also friendly but didn't check up on us during the meal- that's okay though. A good Thai eat!
Keith Lawrence
Casual, informal but fairly cool refurb - a few tables/chairs downstairs primarily aimed at 2s and 3s dining whilst upstairs are the bigger tables for groups and families.

Overall, food very good - soft shell crab with rice excellent, green chicken curry good (spicier than some) and the BBQ pork/fried chicken wings and drumsticks fine in their simplicity. Less successful were the noodle dishes.

What let the place down was the service. We asked for everything to be served together as, unusually, not everyone wanted to share. Thai food is full of flavour and mixing can be a challenge - especially if some wanted the food spicy and others not. The first meal was served 40 minutes before the last main and one dish had to be asked for 10 minutes later. It wasn't overly busy although one general feeling was that sitting downstairs would be better re service.Ā

Disappointing, as we had no complaints whatsoever about the food once it arrived. We will return - but not as a group. And warning - CASH ONLY.

First of allļ¼Œ I would like to say I had a good experience there the other nightļ¼Œhence I thought I would take my parents there. Unfortunatelyļ¼Œthere were many aspects that were very disappointing. It might have been one of those bad nights for themļ¼Œbut nonetheless highlighted the inconsistency. We had 6 main dishes that came seperately over almost an hr windowļ¼ŒI think that was due to them trying to meet ubereats orders instead of their customers in the restaurantļ¼Œvery unprofessional. The curry came first with the rice arriving at least 15 mins later after 3 requests. It was hard and undercookedļ¼Œand hence was difficult to eat with the curry. No apologies from staff.

I got takeaway from here and oh my goodness it is amazing!!! The beef salad is so tasty and fresh and is actually spicy. The servings sizes are great and lots of variety in the veggies and all so fresh. I'll be going here all the time :)

After reading some reviews it seems I picked a crappy service night. It took ages to get a menu, ages to order & just as long to get food. A good hour from getting menu to getting all my dishes (roti arrived then 10 mins later my actual dish arrived). Food itself was tasty - crispy pork with Chinese broccoli plus coconut rice.
Was it worth an hour's wait? No, it was not.

Was invited here for a friend's birthday celebration, sorry to say this was the worst dinner experience for everyone in the table. Service was awful. Not only they mixed up our booking and ask the 15 of us to move to other restaurant cos they only have a table for 12, we also need to wait for 1hour 20mins until our food was served. Whereby, we saw foods and drinks being served to tables next to us, who came in and ordered after us. Being 6mos pregnant and faced with a hungry toddler, we cannot help ourself and ended up getting a takeaway from a restaurant next door. I honestly cannot describe how the birthday friend must have felt, to have his day ruined by these kind of experiences. He has to complain for a table, foods and drinks. Would i recommend this restaurant? Definitely NOT, pretty sure there are few other Thai food available along Victoria St that still offer quality food, good service during peak time, and at least treat their customers properly and lastly allow u to have a peaceful dinner.

Service is awful, they lost our reservation, we had to fight our way to get a table for 15 people and now we have been waiting for an hour yet our orders are nowhere to be seen. Though the place looks nicer than the old ying thai, but definitely service quality has not been kept up. Don't bother coming here..they've ruined our Saturday night

Ordered through Uber Eats and wow what a disappointment. $15 for a take away box which was barely filled quarter way. Will stick to better Thai restaurants in the future like Nine Elephants.

Tasty and scrumptious Thai dishes are offered at Thaiger Rabbit. We tried Ying Thai 2 at Carlton and love it. So when we hear that they also have a sister restaurant in Abbotsford, we decided to give it a try. We ordered the softshell crab fried rice, which was delicious. The rice was well seasoned and served with tasty crab meat. We also tried the chicken padthai which was a bit over-salted/marinated. Nevertheless, we're happy with our dining experience overall.
FoodforThought
Decided to give it a try after hearing good reviews from a friend. The ambience is warm and modern. The food, however wasn't as inviting. The tom yum soup was too sweet (the sweetest version I've ever had), the beef in the stir fried noodles was tough and dry, and the seafood fried rice had a measly amount of seafood.
Ann Marie
Lovely food! Small but very clean eating area! Quick service! Coconut rice could have been more flavoursome!! Overall good first time dining here
LC
The service here is SUPER slow. The only ever have 2 people on the floor. Today for lunch we waited 45 mins for our entree and then 60 mins for our mains.
Had to keep reminding staff to bring us our rice we ordered.
The food is very very average. Pad Thai has minimal flavour and cold when we received it.

Will be sticking to Jinda Thai down the road. Won't even bother here again until they decide to hire more staff.
Bruno
I could not believe the lunch I was served at this place today. One huge mound of rice, surrounded by half a cup (not kidding) of vegetables. What the hell? Never again.
Lulumama
This place is good for salad - large selection.
Curries and stir fries are ok too.
Do not order the steamed fish - it tasted like it has been frozen for a thousand years: meat was so chewy and revolting. That was $26.50 we barely touched.
Morgan
Last year, my classmates told me this restaurant is so nice. So I came here to try their food. The plants make the atmosphere become cosy.
We ordered Pandan Chicken and the steamed fish, the service is fast that take 15mins to waiting for the dishes. The dishes are authentic thai foodļ¼›panda Chicken tasted quite sweet and the fish is quite sour that stimulate the appetite. I love their coconut rice so much, which has coconut in the rice.
Ayman And Zane R
Not the greatest green curry I've ever had. Hot to the point that it was impossible to eat.
Very generous servings though.
Might give them one more try!
Pink
Loved their seafood fried rice. It is quite good for its price and came with a good amount of seafood. Although the calamari was a bit chewy.
Travis Brown
First time dining here !!! Had a fantastic lunch !! Could not fault it! Crispy pork, Thai sausage, red and green curry and pandan leaf chicken all was amazing!!! To finish we had the coconut ice cream which was so refreshing what an amazing lunch we will be back soon!
The Food Lover
My favorite Thai restaurant always dine here since it was called Ying Thai. Just lovely restaurant for the family. However dined there few days ago. It was absolutely ruined my dinner and the love for this restaurant is down the drained. It's just upsetting to turn out like this. The waitress got this poker face on, emotionless and look extremely uninterested in us. I thought she had a bad day or something. The meals turned out to be absolutely different to what made it great. The "tom yum ta lay" tasted so sour and salty and bitter with so many burnt roasted chili. The "seafood pad Thai" tasted bland the "pad kee mow" so bloody little noodle. The "som tum" tasted like nothing before only tasted sour. The worst is the "crab fried rice" it's sugar and MSG overload. It's so sweet and soggy. I made a complaint to the waitress say that we don't enjoy the meal tonight are the chefs changed? The poker face waitress replied nothing had changed and went away. After the disappointment and I went up and paid she showed me the receipt immediately took it back. After I paid then I asked her to give the receipt back she immediately said "oh wait you didn't have the chicken fried rice right?" And refunded the chicken fried rice. I was thinking apart from the uninterested in her job the honesty is also questionable.

First time dining here and I was sadly disappointed. To begin, my partner and I were directed to be seated right next to the doorway in an almost empty restaurant. When we asked to be moved it was clearly a great inconvenience to the wait staff, not off to the best start.

Whenever I try a new Thai restaurant I always start with a Pad Thai - for this dish I specifically asked for no chili but I got a hefty dose of it regardless. The chicken used in the dish was a very low quality - lots of gristle and not much flavour - and the fried egg was slipped on top rather than incorporated throughout the dish. My partner had the soft shell crab special which was equally underwhelming.

Also, it's cash only so come prepared. We won't be back.

This restaurant is the re-birth of the old Ying Thai (along Victoria street in Richmond). The place looks better and bigger than the previous one. Basically, you can find the old menu here. Food-wise, the portions are generous, but taste-wise are inconsistence. Some are too hot and spicy, while others are below-par. Prices are not cheap. Service will depends on who serve you.
Manmar
With a name like that, we just had to try it. Very pleasantly surprised. Lots of menu items I have not seen in other Thai restaurants. The Thai Pork Sausages were sensational. I wasn't keen on the veg curry puffs, but that they has sweet potato in them, which I hate. The crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli was delicious, and the stir fired pork mince with spring onion was fantastic.
PlusSizeQueen
I am a big curry lover. But I was so disappointed with their curry, which consisted of only beef, capsicum and their curry sauce. What the hell. Other Thai restaurants add in 3-4 different types of vegetables in their curries! Also, the curry was too sweet! Sigh
What a major let down. The only thing that saved the curry dish was the roti. But even the roti seemed quite doughy.

Thai cuisine has always been popular in both mainstream and hipster culture with the latter being integrated as menu item offerings in the inner city bars. Thankfully there's also a category of eateries that Thais would happily recommend and patronise. Ying Thai was one of them and Thaiger Rabbit is the reincarnation.

We were fortunate as a group to check this place out and in keeping with traditional Asian food values - the more of us, the more we can order to share. And that was exactly what we got to do and oh boy was that ever so amazing! Firstly to set the scene, Thai food is flavoursome with an abundance of ingredients going into each and every dish ranging from entree right through to desert. Thaiger Rabbit has managed to elevate this to the next level sans the pretentiousness of some city establishments where people are stupid enough to pay and queue up.

First world problem at an eatery is when you look at a menu and simply want everything - we experienced that and it wasn't because they hired a professional wordsmith to come up with flowery descriptions containing phrases like "asian slaw, chili jam, handpulled, line caught....". Presentation was simple and elegant. The orchestration of the ingredients alone was good enough to put serious doubt into whether we have ordered enough rice to accompany. Revisiting the previous point of flavour elevation; they have taken the standard Thai fare and turned it up a notch. Such examples were the tom yum soup and sour pork fried rice. Serving size is pretty generous and price is reasonable. We were fortunate to have the whole of the top floor t ourselves but despite being a full house, there's still plenty of elbow room.

Oh and make sure there's room for deserts - the durian and coconut cream is heavenly...

As a veteran thai food person, I have to say it's hard to get thai food wrong but even harder to become great and differentiate your restaurant from others especially if you serve traditional thai. Thaiger Rabbit have managed to do just that.

Me and my group of foodies visited Thaiger Rabbit for my birthday (thx everyone) recently and was impressed by the food.

We ordered fish cake, fried thai leek pancake, fish skin salad, Tom yum goong (must) red duck curry, deep fried fish with salad, fried chicken in pandan leaves (must), sour pork fried rice (must), durian sticky rice, fried banana and ice cream.

May be hard to believe but taste wise... everything was excellent. Authentic thai. Full flavor. Tom yum was so good I imagine it's the best one I've had in Melbourne. I was savoring every dish slowly as I didn't want that feeling to end but at the same time rushing to taste the next dish. So, I'm giving the food a double thumbs up.

This ambience brings you back to cafƩs you find in Bangkok. It's fairly comfortable and has some quirky decorative but nothing too fancy or interesting. But I enjoy the casual comfort. Service is a bit slow but this is to be expected for most (budget) thai restaurants in Melbourne.

Will definitely be back to try several other interesting dishes that I've missed out on.

Ying Thai...well done creating Thaiger Rabbit...šŸ‘šŸ˜Š

Thaiger Rabbit is the new Ying Thai with the same menu that I love but in a new location. They've done a great job with the place, very casual and relaxed atmosphere and modern/clean. My favourite dishes are the crispy pork (stir fried in your choice of sauce), papaya salad and the sour pork fried rice. I find the prices here very reasonable and the flavours are so spot on.

Would have given this place a 5 but service here can be a hit and miss depending on who is working!

I found the old Ying Thai at Victoria Street... It is now called Thaiger Rabbit by Ying Thai. I have been missing their Tom Yam soup and Sour Pork fried rice....tried at Ying Thai 2 at Lygon but still tasted different. So satisfied after having the generous and tasty dishes exactly like the original Ying Thai. The restaurant is newer, nicer deco and bigger. Happy to have YT back, Big thumbs up!

This is my second visit to Thaiger Rabbit, the service's not so good, had to remind the waitress to bring out the rice. We had the Thai style som tum, a bit too sweet for our palates! Chicken wrapped in pandan leaves a tad on the tiny side. The yellow curry crab was so so. In my opinion Ying Thai 2 is definitely better!
Nate
First of all the place looks great. Great feel, would make a great bar. We shared a beef laarb and chicken green curry. The larb was absolutely fantastic, best I've had. Spicy with plenty of flavour. The green curry while not the best I've had but still good, plenty of heat. While service leaves a little to be desired the pricing is bang on. Generous on the servings with the food unfortunately not so with the drinks. My Thai ice milk tea was served in a small glass that contained mostly ice.
I would venture here again for a quick Thai lunch
One More Glass
Staff here are very bad. English was very limited and made ordering very hard. When we tried to question dishes the waitress just walked off.Ā Food was up and down, some dishes were nice - others not a very good standard. Green Curry lacked the taste and consistency it should. Papaya Salad was lacking any good flavours. However the Crispy pork with Chilli and Basil leaves was delicious - fantastic flavours. Wont return.
Sophia Nguyen
The food was okay but I came here for dinner and they didn't have much that was on the menu. They only had 2 servings of coconut rice at 7pm. There wasn't any chrysanthemum tea. I ordered apple juice and waited and waited until I lost my patience and asked to be told they don't have anymore. I don't know if it was a one time thing but I'm pretty upset.

What a great find. This casual little Thai place has a great relaxed atmosphere. I ordered the Grilled Squid Salad. Fresh ingredients great Thai flavour. Definitely heading back soon.
Schneaky Pete
I liked this place. Friendly happy service, and a great beer list if you like Asian beer (Beerlao Gold even). I agree with some other posters, there is a LOT of flavour packed into the dishes, maybe too much garlic in my pork with garlic and pepper but it was tasty. Oddly the streamed rice is delivered in an IKEA Tupperware container, so maybe not the place for a classy romantic date.

Food had very strong favour. My noodle soup was very pepper-y. And also padthai was way too much tamarind sauce in it. Service could have been better.

Great food and great tastes. Went here on a Sunday lunch trip. Staff friendly and happy overall. BYO wine as what's on offer is average. Green chicken curry fantastic@

We always visit Ying Thai 2 whenever we visit Melbourne. We thought of having a change this time by going to the first Ying Thai. The food was not as nice as Ying Thai 2 but still nice overall. The papaya salad is the only dish we'll not oder again. It's way too spicy for us even though we usually can take quite spicy food.
May
Came here twice, decent Thai food, large portions and reasonable price. Food have very strong flavours but almost a tad too much at times. Yet to try their desserts.
Celia Jane
Really nice Thai take away, big portions (enough for lunch the next day!) and one of the nicest Green curries I've ever tasted - heaps of flavor. We will definitely be ordering from here from now on.
Julia Palenov
Went for a dinner and ordered a red curry and a warm vermicelli salad. The food was RIDICULOUSLY Ā spicy and hot. I couldn't eat past the first 2 spoons, it was that hot. We left almost within chemical burns.
Either warn the staff about the level of spiciest or choose another place to eat.
Staff was not too attentive either, never went to check on the food or ask if we wanted anything else.
Not a pleasant experience.
Albert
A bit confused at first not knowing it is the same ying thai restaurant just got rebranded. Food was great as usual, great tom yum soup, pork skin salad and som tum are favourites! Service was great too, the waitress is very friendly :)

Dined with six friends to try this new Thai eatery.Ā We pre booked a table and were led to a hard wood banquette & table with four stools around it. I requested the stools be replaced with chairs with backs which was done promptly but with a look of annoyance by the waitress. Who on earth would would want to spend a couple of hours of relaxed dining on short wooden stools? Really...
After settling down with the menus we were ready to order. Our group was a mix of vegetarians, pescatarians and carnivores , so for ease of choice, we decided to each go our own way with an entree and main. I ended up at the 'head' so our waitress approached me first. I enquired about a special on the wall, which baffled her completely, so she collared a collegue. who of all things, was wearing a white surgical mask. Not a good look for a restaurant I must say...The query settled I ordered my entree & main. She immediately went to the counter to place the order. We had to waive her back to take the rest of the table's orders. She proceeded to take three more orders and she went off to the counter again. Waived back again for the final two orders she became flustered and incoherent, especially with the muffled voice behind the mask. That sorted, within 5 minutes my main arrived. I asked her whether the entree would usually arrive first? "Oh..." she said and turned to take it back. I asked her to just leave it. My friends urged me to eat it while it was hot. My entree arrived as soon as I started into the main. My meal was completely over before the rest of my table got served ( and I wasn't wolfing it down...) The meals were generous, fresh, full of flavour and good quality, however, I got to taste a little of everything around the table and found all the dishes were overly sweet.Ā There was no balance of sweet, salty & heat. Very heavy handed with the sugar. This place will be ok if they sorted out the staff/efficiency, ditch the surgical mask, hold back on the sugar, replace the stools with chairs and popped some cushions on the banquette. Not sure to hurry back...

Absolutely love the food and people at Thaiger Rabbit, the waiters are friendly and willing to go the extra step to make sure that you have a great night and most importantly the food is amazing, very good quality food and great staff makes them a great place to go!

been a big fan of Ying Thai since the late 90s... since it has relocated, I've been a couple of times - had something from the lunch menu and also ala carte... m disappointed by the change in taste since their relocation and rebranding to Thaiger Rabbit.Ā hopefully i improves....

The staff was not really in the dining area busy with something in the kitchen, however really attentive once we made contact. Food was your average fair but the dry chilli flakes was the highlight for me. Extremely hot and hurts so good. The milk teas were nice and chive cakes were good too!
CBF Glutton
Interesting decor but meh on the ambience.
Decent service but the food are good and came in decent portions.
Not very expensive.

Might come back.

Service poor. Been going to this place often but lately have noticed that service is non existent. Went there on Thursday as I have my sister in-law from Thailand and we were totally disappointed. The 3 of us that ordered and my partner had only ordered a simple noodle dish. We all got our food quiet quickly except for her. We waited but still after 15 minutes her noodle dish hadn't arrived. At this stage we were nearly done with our meals when we asked the waitress why the wait and she responded noodles take time, but what got us in the meantime they had no problems filling up the table with dishes for themselves and there was no one else in the place. We waited another 10 minutes and still no noodles and by this time we had already digested our food and they had a great banquet setup for themselves and having a great time chatting among themselves not worrying about the only customers that were in there "us". but still no simple noodles or response into why were still waiting like idiots for a dish that normally comes out before all others. Now I guess I understand why JINDA around the corner is taken their customers. The owner should really look at what their staff are doing

Amazing thai with solid spices & chilli!. I went here for the first time with my friends, many have been coming here for years. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the dishes & the great flavours. Having been to Thailand myself I can say this place clearly standsout in Melbourne!
Lucy 'Lulu' Zhang
Authentic Thai Flavours. I am a regular at Ying Thai and find that their flavours are very authentic (and they don't hold back on the spice!) However, I do find the prices a bit overpriced for the portions, and sometimes there's an inconsistent wait between dishes. Staff service is ok, nothing overly impressive. Will keep going back for the quality of the food.
Michael Do
Good flavours and portion sizes, Ka Nar was great but more Chinese than Thai.

Pad Thai was disappointing so was the lack of serving spoons.

Terrible Service. I had eaten here once before and thought the food was good but not great. Tonight it was average and overpriced. My first issue was that I had to wipe the seat down before sitting as there was some sort of sauce on it. Now the food, one of mains we ordered was a squid dish, the squid was luke warm and was very small in size. The red curry wasn't bad but I've had much better. I would've accepted this as a lot of the restaurants on Victoria St are hit & miss when it comes to food quality but the waiter was terrible, he plonked a bowl of soup on our table which we hadn't ordered, it spilt everywhere, all over the table, all over the floor, all over me. He gave the table a quick wipe with a dirty sponge and left me to clean up the rest. As my shoes soaked up the soup on the floor the waiter gave the now half bowl of soup to the correct table next to us, he was taken aback when the dinners kindly requested that he top up the bowl, how dare they make such a request. The bill came to to $53.30, we paid $54, we weren't offered any change which normally wouldn't bother me as I'm happy to pay an at least 10% tip but due to the very poor service a $0.70 tip was way too much, this wouldn't have covered the cost of the Preen I had to use to soak my shirt in when I got home. To top the night off the said waiter took my half full beer when clearing the table. Very poor service. Check your seats before sitting.
Hannnsie
Bad food enhanced by bad service and dirty straw. It's been a couple of years since we've been back here but because Jinda Thai was booked out, we thought we'd give it another try. Firstly, our can drinks came with dirty straws that was replaced wth a mumbled apology followed by the mains that was plonked at the end of the table. We asked whether the entrees should come out first to which we were told that we had to request this?!? The food was below average, the fry rice was sweet and soggy, every other dish tasted the same. The service was rude and abrupt and to cap it off, it was well overpriced. We should have waited an hour for Jinda Thai, it would have still been worth it and the service is so much faster that we probably would have finished at the same time. Never again!!!

...It is Thai style deep-fried fish cakes. The seasoning was perfect although I couldnā€™t handle the spiciness...

Ā Ying Thai is the first location of this popular Thai restaurant. Ying Thai 2 is located in Carlton and is frequently visited by Melbourne Uni students and locals. The Richmond venue doesnā€™t appear to be as popular around lunch weekdays but it doesnā€™t indicate quality whatsoever. The dish pictured above was the Chicken Flat Rice Noodle with Chilli and Basil, otherwise known as Pud Kee Mow. What I liked about this dish was that it was spicy, and a really decent hit of chilli at that. It might be too spicy for some, but it just hits the spot for me. The Pud Kee Mow, you can choose your protein of choice from Chicken, Beef, Pork or Vegetable, like many of their dishes actually. Iā€™ve never actually had this before but I really did like the flavour, the spiciness, a bit of soy that adds sweetness and a hint of salt and the basil. You canā€™t forget the fragrant basil. They add carrots, capsicum,Ā broccoliĀ and cabbage if memory serves me correctly. I liked the abundance of vegetables no matter
Gastrology
I visited Ying Thai in Richmond and was surprised at the difference in the quality and standard of the offerings. It was a far cry from Ying Thai 2. The food was very disappointing.
I Eat Therefore I Am
After coming back from the snow trip , we were all starving. We wanted to eat something strong in flavour after three days of making our own meals where we didn't have any salt, pepper or sugar. Hence I suggested we go to Ying Thai as everytime I go there
Denise_hlc
Love the food BUT. Second visit to Ying Thai. I absolutely love the food! No complaints. But I did promise that I will not come back during summer because I I was one of the unfortunate ones that had to sit upstairs. No air condition, no fan except 1 miserly floor fan, 1 window opened just a little, and you could not open the other window. It was stifling hot. What was suppose to be an enjoyable dinner turned out a disaster. We just had to pack up the rest of the dinner. I would reckon by now the owner would have installed some cooling system upstairs or at least invested in a couple of portable coolers!
Eric Bluer
Don't ask me why it's much quieter than Jinda which is just behind.
Price is over. Nothing's special. Strong sweet flavour from MSG.

Best Thai food I had in Melbourne!. Spicy lovers...this place is heaven...

Best Thai food I have in Melbourne... One of few places where their Tom Yum soup is clear and not pasty! Been to Thailand and this is one of the closest soup I can find that blows me away every time. Pandan chicken yum... Spicy squid is so spicy yum! Had the burnt/brown rice powder squid or something...best squid I had in my life. Pad gra pow...wow...been trying to replicate at home.

Highly recommended.
Tingw18
Service and food are really bad.. The 1st time we went there was on sep. The food is fine but the tom yum is so spicy. The 2nd time we ordered the tom yum again and asked for less spicy. But we still couldn't finish the bowl. Today is our 3rd time, we ordered chicken skewers, fried rice and tom yum. We asked for tom yum with less spicy and shared our feedback from last time. But it is the same and still really spicy. We haven't finished the food and they took the plate away. We were disappointed and don't come again anymore.
Quarter Of A Pounder
Above average but... Normally i'd go to ying thai 2,
but tonight we were in the area so decided to go ying thai 1.
I have been here before and quiet enjoyed the meal and remember it being always busy, but tonight it was empty....
possibly due to the new thai restaurant open in the corner, regardless, we went in and the staff was friendly enough and we ordered 3 dishes that I can never remember the names of.. -_-;;
It was nice and quick and the flavors were all there.
if your looking for good thai in the area, give this place a go.
Vanessa Tran
Food was decent, not great. It was my first time coming here just for a casual dining for dinner. Tom yum was alot sour than I expected it to be. Or maybe I just didnt order the best things? Only thing I enjoyed was the Pad Thai, properly made with the right taste
Zippyzaggy8
Delicious. Come here quite often and I am never disappointed with the food or service. Never mind the relaxed street style look the dishes are authentic and packed full of flavour and spicy if you like it that way...... Definitely recommend it, if your in the area.
Mike Gigz
I personally enjoy and recommend this place.
Great food and service ,flavours bring me back to Thailand
Jeremy
Great.... if you like hair in your food and bad service. Hair was in 3/4 dishes we ordered

slow service.. and from the food we ate.. it was bad
Kopikopi
Same place?. Tastes average but not as good as thai 2
Crdav1
Terrible all round!. If you wanna get your head blown off by an overdose of chilli and chicken satay served with hard tip top bread, or soup that taste like it's basically fish sauce then go to Ying Thai. What a rip off!
Hungryhippo88
Good takeaway. Not really for dining in but good serving size and yummy curries.
Kennykhoa
Best thai food. Been here many times, very hot and flavorsome thai food. papaya salad and the warm mince meat salad is very nice.
would recommend it to anyone
Hungry Danbo
ONE prawn?. Been here over 20 times, this place is one of the best thai restaurants going around. The flavours are genuine and reminds of you Thailand. The tom yum here is not created with paste, but from scratch as you can see the fresh lemon grass, chilli, tomato...etc. However, like the reviewer before mentioned, I ordered a seafood dish (extra $1) and got ONE prawn. Are you bloody serious? They jacked up the prices (menu price edited) and they reduce the quantity. This place use to be cheap and filling. If this continues to be the case, I suggest everyone to walk down a few shops to eat either Thai city or Lemongrass (few dollars more expensive) as I can assure you seafood dishes come with adequate amounts.
Valerie
One of my favourite Thai restaurants in Melbourne
Rhubarbrose
Whoa! I ordered red curry with prawns. I got one (ONE!!) prawn!!!! And a lot of broccoli. That's okay because I really like broccoli except for that I WOULD HAVE ORDERED BROCCOLI RED CURRY! And it was about $19. Such a rip off! To be fair the fish cakes were fantastic but I will not be returning.
Alexaaa
First time reviewed, the food is always excellent. The best Thai Restaurant in Melbourne and I agreed the service is very good , much better than another branch.5 STARS
Jirada Sai
Very bad service doesnt take care of me at all
Maybe because im Thai like them

Good Service. Service in Ying Thai Richmond is much much more better than Ying Thai in Lygon. Food taste is good, but serving a little small. Price is slightly high with the food portion.
Snow053
Food is phenomenal. Service is average. Used to come quite often until one night we had made a booking and were kept waiting half an hour (out in the cold as there is little waiting space at the entry) which ruined the night. This happened a year ago. Manager has great customer service and was apologetic and sent us on our way with some coconut ice cream. Came back recently as we missed the food. Had made a booking for 9 and confirmed via phone also to make doubly sure and were sat promptly. Although it was a full house the food came quick, service again was average but the dishes were authentic and tasty and manager was lovely and acknowledged us at the end - will be coming again more often.
Chilli
Ignore the reviews on here complaining about bad service or too much chilli - the staff here are as per usual for Victoria st, and the food is authentically Thai and thus spicy. One of the best Thai restaurants in melbourne. Not every dish is great, but the ones that are as good as what you'll find in Bangkok. Compare their green curry or pad Thai to your local and you'll see what I mean.
Dorothy Wong
Pork salad. You dont have to ask about their pork skin salad..to be honest best salad ive ever had.
Ann Houng
Yummy and Spicy. Very good Thai food. My favourite Thai restaurant in Melbourne for our family. Good and helpful staff. Very hot compared to Lygon st branch ( test better in my opinion, more flavour). Extremely recommended Thai restaurant.
Spiral Stairs
A favourite of ours, always worth a visit. Best fish cakes in Melbourne, and if you want a spicy stir fry this is the place! Curries are nice, though on occasions the Penang curry can be a bit bland.

Poor service - never coming back again. Used to visit this place a fair bit, but after my experience on 8 March 2013 - my verdict is never, and I recommend others not to. Short story is we were met by a very rude gentlemen (and I am using this term very loosely here), who insisted the 2 adult and a kid should sit in a table of two, and who took exception when I asked him to bring the menu over (rather than allow him to take his own sweet time) and he asked me "What's the problem?"

I suppose for most people, we go to a restaurant for a meal - rather than to answer the question of "What's the problem?"

At this point, I walked out of the restaurant with my wife and kid and told him the problem is he's being rude and I'm going somewhere.

We found another lovely Thai place at 80 Victoria Street, Richmond.

So my simple recommendation is - STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

The food is drastically different from Ying Thai on Lygon St. The tom yum seafood soup taste very cheesy and I'm not a fan of cheese at all. So it turn out to be revolting. The thai red curry (no coconut version) taste like hot boiling water with fresh pepper corn soaked in it but no curry or pork taste. If anyone is craving for Thai food, PLS CONSIDER THE LYGON ST RESTAURANT INSTEAD OF THIS ONE.

Reliably good. Ying thai is generally out default "old faithful" if we are at a wits end on where to eat. You don't usually go for the ambiance. The service is ok....very pleasant but not skills wait staff, what they lack in skill they make up in politeness. Food 95% of the time is spot on. Only been let down once but willing to forgive when the next visit is a success.

Pleasing choice. A nice meal in comfortable surroundings. Authentic flavours. Well done.

This place used to be good but unfortunately the quality has been poor during the last few visits. The most disappointment for me will be the fish fillet dish, it only contained 3 pieces of overcooked fillets costing $15 for it.

Waited half an hour for ice cream. unless they were making the ice-cream on premises, I don't know what they were doing. thumbs down for service.

Nice food with helpful staff. We came here on a Tuesday night after reserving a table for 4. The place was bright and a bit distracting with the plasma tv showing various programs and videos. We had brought a bottle of wine and a few beers and they were quick to bring us glasses.

We chose the fish cakes and chicken satay sticks to start. The fish cakes were nice, but a bit chewy and needed the sauce. The chicken satay sticks were ok but nothing special. We ordered a Penang curry (mild) and one with a bit of heat to it. We also ordered the beef with oyster sauce and the red curry with beef.

The mild Penang curry was very nice and well seasoned. The slightly hotter one was very spicy however. The beef with oyster sauce was very nice but maybe a bit salty, and the red curry was very nice but the beef was on the tough side. They brought us a large Tupperware for the rice and they were quick to replace it when we managed to eat it all! The staff were very nice and attentive. It was $3 corkage per person but they didnā€™t charge the two of us who had brought one beer each along.

The bill came to just over $100 for the four of us which was reasonable considering the quality and the quantity of the food. Weā€™ll definitely be back!

Ying Thai TWO is better!. Personally prefer yingthai 2 on Lygon in terms of food, location and atomsphere.we visited with a group of 3 ppl, ordered - stir fry minced pork with chilli (yummy but doesnt amaze us as I can replicate them myself ), Tom you seafood hot pot (ratio of sourness and spicyness are uneven and the portion of seafood they served - frozen carb meat and less ration plus a few calamari and prawn like 3?) and the red hot curry ( which was order by mistake as red hot curry and red curry aren't the same + red hot curry tasted just like tomyom but with more chilli and bamboo shoot). Overall, disappointed! I would rather go back to Ying Thai 2 on Lygon

Hot and tasty. Love this place. Spicy good times abound. But be warned, hot is very very hot. Mince chicken and basil chilli is sublime

Very nice thai !. Please believe me when i say I know thai food and this would have to be very close to being authentic as Australian thai food gets.
Very nice and caters to those who like rather traditional thai food rather than other rubbish establishments that claim they are serving thai food but just laden the plate with soy sauce and sugar!

Was so nice to find a good thai place ..so much so, i brought 4 mains just so I could pig out and take a bunch of it home for the next day!

Cant wait to go back!

I love Thai food at Ying Thai and always will. This restaurant is very very popular among Vietnamese people and Indonesian. 5 stars

Best Thai food on the street. Must try!!! If you don't like original hot Thai food don't come.
Yvonne
I like my food spicy, so this is the place for me and perhaps you as well. :(

Not worth the value, just take-away Ka Nar Moo Grob and when I open the bag it was only 1/4 full for $13. Never going back there again. Still sticking with Ying Thai 2.

I have been to many Thai restaurants, and a couple times to Ying Thai in Richmond. Whilst this isn't the best, i would rank it toward high on the list. For those who have not had tasted the true authentic Thai flavour, one that has not been westernised to suit the locals just for the sake of their business, should give this a go. Yes some dishes are real chilli hot, but hey this is Thai cuisines, not spaghetti made in India, nor indian chicken Tikka that's made by a Chinese take away. I've been to some other Thai restaurants, Caroline Thai in Caroline Springs, another Thai restaurant in Derrimut which I fortunate enough to have forgotten its name. Their so called Thai Tom Yum, green curry, beef nuer....you gotta be kidding me!! I wonder if their chef ever been to Thailand himself..,,

Very average green papaya salad. Papaya non existent (all carrot) and flavours not balanced. I used to love this place but it has now disappointed too many times. Won't be going back.

Best Thai in Melbourne. Awesome Tom yum soup, great amount of chilli. Yum!!! Will be going back next week. :)

Over the top with chilli and unattentive and rude staff.. The food at Ying Thai is good in the flavour department however, the amount of chilli used in their dishes, especially the soups is too much! I am Indian in origin and I love my chilli, but there comes a point when flavour is superseded by the strength and the amount of chilli used. Unfortunately, Ying Thai crosses this line. The staff at this establishment are also pretty unattentive, not looking around to acknowledge their customers needs. When I did make a complaint about one of their soups, which was ridiculously hot and inedible the staff were rude and willing to offer a very meagure discount (not even half of the price of the dish) for food that had hardly been touched. Had to go and have some food elsewhere afterwards, I would not recommend this place!

Had a banquet dinner for four, which included fish that was supposedly barramundi but did not taste like it at all and a unpleasant fishy smell and taste to it. Tom yum soup was extremely chilli hot (even for myself who likes spicy food) waiter did even ask how we would like it. Other dishes included in the banquet were really average, like fish cake. Overall, there are much better Thai places elsewhere. Have been here before, but food has not been this bad. Will not come here again.

This restuarant is a complete waist of time and money! The food is ordinary at best. The service is non existent. And the price is not exactly cheap so exactly what redeeming feature does it have? Absolutely none. Have not been this let down for as long as I can remember.

I've been to Thailand twice, and this restaurant makes the most authentic Thai I've found in Melbourne so far. They actually have som tam on the menu and it's spicy! I feel like a lot of Thai outside Thailand is too sweet. It's a no fuss place, and takes cash only.

Expensive corkage, random charges on the bill, rather average food, fairly good service, not a huge fan but not the worst place

A must-try dish guys goes to duck fried rice. Fried rice kidding me? It might sound very simple but the one with duck is rare to find and it takes awesome!

I like you but do you like me. Enjoy the dinner but suffer the next day

Favourite Thai Resturant. Great authentic Thai food, probably my favourite Thai place in Melbourne. Restaurant itself looks a bit shabby, but does not reflect the quality of their food. My favourite is the duck salad, flounder topped with apple salad and red duck curry. The quality of ingredients was exceptional and dishes are always very tasty. Dont bother with Ying Thai 2 on Lygon st, this restaurant is the original.

Very average!. Service wasn't the best

drinks took ages to come out

food was very average.

Made in Thailand. If you've spent any time in Thailand (and managed to step outside of your palatial hotel), you'll immediately feel a connection with the no frills authentic fare on offer at Ying Thai.

There are certainly Thai establishments with more elaborate dƩcor, fancier crockery and slicker service, but there are few serving up the same simple down to earth satisfying Thai standards.

The daily specials scrawled out in Thai characters are a clue the cafƩ is popular with Thai folk, especially students feeling a tad homesick and in need of some comforting, familiar fare.

No complaints about my 'Kao Pad Nam', a fried rice dish spiked with fermented sour pork sausage, and my partner seemed satisfied with her 'Gouy Teaw Nuer', a beef noodle soup featuring beef brisket, sliced beef, beef balls, liver & pork crackling.

Try to go when they're not too busy. When you're in Ying Thai and there aren't too many people, the food seems to come out with an extra bit of love.
Can't say its the best in town, however having had my fare share of Thai food not just in Melbourne, I cant say I can fault them much.
KW
Clean, pure and authentically Thai. We have eaten here dozens of times over the last five years and still think it is the most authentic in town, beating sister Ying Thai Two hands down. Tonight we had juicy fish cakes (can't resist them) laced with slivers of kaffir lime, Pad Prik Gang that was vibrant enough to make steam come out of our ears bit still fragrant with basil and coconut and a sublime Larb Ped. Large chunks of duck, onion with bite and roasted rice to give a little crunch. Team all this with a serve of Tamarind juice and enjoy.

Delicious!. Loved everything I've ordered here. The curries, tom yum, stir fries - all delicious. What I also like is the menu. There are a few different dishes on there that I haven't seen before. The decor is pretty basic though. But I'll definitely be back there again and again.

Great food. Fresh innovative northern thai dishes. Very very un glam surrounds, even for Victoria Street - ultra bright but always busy because the food is really good. Next time I'll take out.

Love it!. Love this place. The food tastes great, value for money, good service. If you cant handle the spice, be sure to let them know when ordering. Love the crispy pork salad. If you wanna make sure you get a table, be sure to be there for early session or later session, this place can get real PACKD!
