Review Geppetto's - Abbotsford

Conrad Garro
Restaurant is no longer Mesa it has new owners and is now an Italian and Greek restaurant trading under the name Geppettos with new owners who are not very nice. We had the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Firstly we weremt allowed to sit outside even though it was a beautiful sunny afternoon but refused to serve us out there, secondly we were not provided with menus and we're told they were doing a banquet. We were not informed of what was in the banquet let alone what the price was. We asked for the menu two seperate times and never received it. We got given dirty wine glasses with red lipstick on them and had to get up out of our seats each time we needed their assistance. The food was in fact good but the atmosphere and service was horrendous including listening to them fight with another paying customer. When it came time for the bill, what we read from their website was $25 set lunch banquet ended up costing us $60 per head. They then proceeded to argue with us saying they told us up front. Absolutely disgusting people and service and will NEVER be returning again and do NOT recommend putting anyone else through a meal at this venue.

Came here on a whim on a Sat as it is close to our home. Was very pleasantly surprised! Food was of the old school variety, good portions and well made. We had the lamb shanks and the eye fillet, both were lovely and the steak was cooked how I ordered it. The panacotta was to die for. Staff were lovely and friendly too! We'll be back :)

Average food and terrible service. Had to call to be served after 15 minutes. Our entree arrived 50 mintues after we ordered with only one of the mains. The othet two mains were another 20 minutes later. We were basically forgotten. No compensation, no actual care. Note this is the old mesa greek cusine that appears to have been taken over by an italian owner and renamed.

Sensational experience for mothers day! The food was brilliant and fast, and staff were all so incredibly lovely and kind. Second time at this venue and was not disappointed! Highly recommend!

It's now called Geppetto's Handmade Italian cuisine yet the menu is still Greek. Not a pizza or pasta in sight. What is going on???

Appears they seemed to had a fire sort like the burnt pizza I had! Wonder if the fire was related to the down turn in business..... bring back the Greek

Generous portion size and they were accommodating through Groupon.

Intro .. We have been coming to this restaurant from when it was the original Yiannis & Vassilis, so dating back at least 30 years.  We had also been since it changed to Mesa.  It wasn't the same but still had great food and ambiance. WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT last night was!!!!!Booked for Mother's Day.  Arrived to find another sign at the front which was clearly NOT Mesa.  A gentleman, presumably the owner said "come in, yes it's the same"  Well, it's not. <br/>Mother's day was a set menu.  That's ok, based on what we've had before $55 for the banquet was ok, again based on the food that we've previously had. <br/>In the past the place was buzzing, from the moment you walked in, till the moment you walked out. <br/>This is no longer.  Was told by a staff member that they are combining Italian and Greek and slowly fazing out the Greek.  Italians and Greeks may be similar in their traditions but not their food. <br/>For starters, FALSE ADVERTISING! <br/>Staff:  pleasant enough although didn't know what a Apple Cider was and needed to be shown on the menu.  Not a great start.<br/>The food was absolutely tasteless and disgusting.  The dips literally came out as we were sitting down to our chairs. They had obviously been sitting there for a while.  Not the same quality. The seafood was a disgrace. Frozen fish, overcooked calamari and prawns, no taste or seasoning whatsever.  Then came the meat platter.  There was 13 of us with 12 lamb chops!  No salt, no flavour. The gyro was not gyro.  No seasoning or flavour in anything we had. Then, the desert platter.  What a disgrace!  Baklava that was obviously out of a packet and crystalised sugar, with a few peices of fruit that had been sitting there for God knows how long. <br/>You have ruined what was an icon in Abbotsford. <br/>Shame on you for suggesting that it is still a Greek Restaurant and trying to fool people.  <br/>People will NOT return after they have tried you once and if they do, they have no idea what REAL greek food tastes like (so know no different).Very very dissappointed.

Had lunch for 2 on a Sunday. Good location and well set-up. Problem was that the food didn’t match up. Menu was interesting and broad but execution / flavour let down. Saganaki was excellent but disappointed with zucchini fritters, meatballs and dips. And bread was terrible and over doughy. Why not have flat bread instead? For the reasonably high price point was not great.

Food was ok. Didnt get to try the meat because it took too long (2hrs and no sign of the meat). The service is a huge let down. Avoid going on a weekend or be prepaired to wait.<br/><br/>We tried to not pay for some of our meal but we were told "no, its saturday, its not our fault" We have an 8 month old who was crying and over tied, we wernt waiting any longer. Wont be going back.

I’ve wanted to visit this place for years now so it was time to go. Opportunity knocks but once lol<br/><br/>Arriving at this restaurant we were warmly welcomed to this old mansion by the lovely staff. That’s a good start. We were shown to our table and things only got better from there. <br/><br/>All except the white bread which was a bit underwhelming.<br/><br/>But the home made tzatziki dip was thick and creamy and full of cucumber pieces. Yummo<br/><br/>We tried some vegetarian zucchini fritters, which were crispy on the outside and soft and creamy and full of flavour! Soo good.<br/><br/>We had some calamari for main and the lamb gyros. OMGosh both of these dishes were at another level. They were just perfect. The calamari was soft and cooked to perfection, w a nice salad and the portion sizes were really generous.<br/><br/>But it was the lamb that was my favourite. It was crispy on the outside but pink and soft on the inside!! I seriously could have eaten this al night! So much so I am starting to salivate just thinking about it!! <br/><br/>Am I going back again, absolutely!! As soon as i get the chance. I .org such fresh food and wonderful service you really need to visit this place.

Mesa Seafood was disgusting.. Prawns was not fresh at all, they didn’t put scallops and bay bug when we asked the waitress said we already put the other thing extra. She should tell us before. But calamari and lamp was nice<br/>

My Key Three Pointers <br/>* Under new management <br/>* Service 10/10 <br/>* Seafood was a let down <br/><br/>My sister is obsessed with eat club and personally I’m not sure if I’m a fan. I have this perception that restaurants are offering deals as they can’t get customers through the door on merit. Once again this proved my theory and I had a very average meal. Lucky I was not paying full price as I would have been hugely disappointed. <br/>I have been to Mesa many years ago and I recall a very enjoyable meal. Unfortunately I can’t give the same feedback on this occasion. <br/><br/>The restaurant is missing its king the previous owner and also its Greek following, I also think the food quality has changed. Friday night empty and something did not feel the same. The food definitely was also not how I recall it. <br/>We had excellent service and the waitress was really pleasant, friendly and very accommodating. The two points I have given goes to the hospitality she provided. <br/><br/>We opted for a share plate of dips and three options were provided. The Taramosalata was very salty, the eggplant dip had no salt and the tzatski would keep any vampire away. The bread that was served was not Greek Pide rather a doughy loaf of bread. We had zucchini fritters that tasted nice but completely under cooked and raw batter. We had Seafood platter for 2 which can be shared amongst 4, if you can eat whats on the plate. <br/><br/> If you want to enjoy seafood it needs to be fresh and not over cooked, unfortunately I can’t give this a tick. Those Morton bay bugs were not beautiful and sweet like they should be. This is my all time fave seafood and I did not want to eat the ones on this platter. We got more prawn heads than the actual prawn. The fish was dry and looked like it was frozen and defrosted before cooking. The calamari was nice but for $110 I can’t justify paying this price when I get better calamari at my fish and chip shop. <br/><br/>It was a miss for me and not a restaurant I would go back to.

Ordered the takeaway Souvlaki and the Pita was burnt. I can’t believe the chef or whoever would knowingly serve this to a customer. Speaks volumes..

The customer service staff was really unfriendly. A friend of mine brought me to a friend’s dinner today, and when the waitress was taking orders from me, I mentioned that I didn’t eat seafood. She asked, “Do you eat fish?” I replied, “Fish is seafood. I just said I don’t eat seafood.” She replied, “Why are you being rude to me?” I said, “You were not paying attention to what I just said. I need to speak to your manager.” She said ,”I am the manager. Ask your friends.” I didn’t want to make a scene, so I decided not to eat there and went home. I feel bad for the friend who brought me there but also glad that I didn’t know the people here. Otherwise, I would hesitate to leave.

We ended up in this place because of a Groupon deal..<br/>The food here is pretty good, the deal came with saganaki, grilled capsicums, broadbeans and dips as starters.. The dips were very tasty and we finished all of it with the bread..<br/>For the mains we got a plate of grilled seafood and a meat platter.. Meat was succulent and we were too full to finish everything.. For dessert we got some Greek donuts, assorted fruits and coffee..<br/>the service there was also very good too and staff were polite and helpful..<br/>The restaurant itself was very suited for large groups and we saw a large group of people come in celebrating a christening.. <br/>We were very satisfied with the place..

The place felt like walking into a Greek family home. The staff were exceptionally accommodating and hospitable. Not to mention the food was fantastic from mezze to dessert. Will definitely recommend!

Beautiful Greek food!!<br/>Lovely customer service and definitely a nice atmosphere.<br/>Similar set up to Jim's Greek taverna but I can tell you it is definitely 3 times better!<br/>Very delicious.<br/>Would love to return soon!<br/>Calamari and the meats were my favourite dishes

Looked forward to try this place after many recommendations by others and reading the reviews on here... staff were outstanding and very friendly, food service was fast and prompt, atmosphere was pleasant but that's where the positives end!!!... my meal was basically a lump of OIL... it was terrible :(..been once, won't be back!... given the 3*** based on staff, service and atmosphere... 0 for the food itself :(

Been to this restaurant before and both times I have found this place to be a great venue! It has a pleasant modern ambience, both upstairs in the private function room and downstairs as well. They prepared and served up great quality, delicious food and generous amounts of everything! Quite often with many restaurants when you get a lot of food it comes at the price of average quality food. But not here! The staff were friendly and prompt as well!

Absolutely beautiful food. Loved it! We used a Groupon voucher, which was great value for money. We had so much food, all delicious. I couldn't fault it. The meal came with a glass of house wine, which was even lovely. The staff were so friendly and attentive. A lovely vibe. I'd definitely go back.
Lady Masticator
Great value for great tasting food. I’ve been here several times and it never skips a beat. The chicken souvla is fresh, well-cooked and tasty. Don’t get me started on their fresh bread... I don’t even eat that much bread but I got through a small loaf! So very highly recommend, it’s no wonder their restaurant is always full.

I'll be honest. I love a bargain, but I also don't rate getting average service and mediocre food for an average price. The food was a little bland and whilst it was very busy on a Saturday night, it felt more like a pub that had been sort of turned in to a greek restaurant. Some of the food lacked flavour, and the staff - whilst very busy didn't provide great service. I said at the time this was one of the most average meals I've had, and on time to reflect I can say that that comment was in the heat of the moment. I can now clearly say that was absolutely one of the most average meals I have ever had. I'll be making my own saganaki from now on.

Impeccable service - the manager/waiter actually acknowledges my name from the booking. He was extremely friendly from very first moment we walked in. Accommodating to our needs (with bday candles), he really took care of us. Food was extremely delicious. It exceeded above my expectations - offering various foods besides the usual souvalaki, gryos and mousakka. The donuts were crunchy and crispy and weren’t too sweet!! Defs worth a try! The only improvement I would say is that i wished the other waiters could be more attentive like the guy in the red shirt. They have such a good role model, I don’t understand why they were always looking down.. they seemed to only focus on getting dishes out and setting up tables, than to notice when customers need some service..
Queen Of Food
For starters we ordered the mixed dips, peppers, lightly fried calamari, dalmadakia and zucchini chips. The dips, peppers, calamari and dalmadakia were lovely, fresh and tasty. The zucchini chips I thought were really oily and not that enjoyable. We would have also deferred pita bread with the dips as the bread provided was a little too dense and heavy. For mains we ordered the seafood platter and mixed meat platter. The seafood platter, while it looked great, it was mixed results. The prawns and moreton bay bugs were dry and over cooked unfortunately and the mini scallops didn’t taste fresh. The calamari and mussels were cooked well and had good flavour. The meat on the meat platter was cooked well but needed a little more seasoning. The Greek salad was great, and traditional and was a nice side dish to accompany the platters. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience however a few things to work on in order to reach that next tier of deliciousness.

Beautiful restaurant with fresh, yummy food. Fantastic service, clean cosy rooms, and room for the whole family. They were very accommodating, and we left full and satisfied. The wine list is good value too. Will be back!

We live locally and visit this restaurant frequently. The food is definitely some of the best Greek food I've had in the north in Melbourne (big call I know!). The owner is absolutely lovely. Always smiling and goes out of his way to accommodate. Unfortunately the blonde pregnant lady at the front desk as you enter, who is also unfortunately the first person to greet you, is consistently rude and abrasive. She has no manners and is always grumpy and disrespectful. It's probably the only negative thing I can say about this place. So if you can ignore the rude lady this is definitely worth a visit. also the restaurant is BYO and no corckage ... bonus!

Have visited many times before, with the most recent being today, 29 April 2018. <br/>Attended a celebratory lunch in the private dining room upstairs which was very comfortable for the 10 adults and 4 kids. <br/>First of all, our waiter was amazing. Big thank you to the waiter with the French (???) accent who was very personable, attentive, helpful and professional. <br/>All the food was very fresh. I particularly commend the platter of seafood, with very soft and not at all rubbery calamari, and decadently cooked fish. <br/>The loukoumades were also a stand out - huge, perfect spheres, crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Served hot just like the bread that came with the dips. <br/>Thanks so much for the enjoyable experience 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Went here for Sunday lunch using a Groupon banquet deal. Service was great, food was amazing and it was an all round enjoyable experience. I'd go here again without hesitation.

Had a wonderful time here with friends. Costa, our server, made us feel like we were the only ones there. The dips were delicately served with warm homemade style bread along with octopus, Lima beans in tomato and beef meatballs wrapped in eggplant in a lovely tomato sauce.<br/>Others ordered the slow cooked goat and prawn skewers with a side dish of potatoes .<br/>Real, traditional Greek food !! Loved it all!<br/>Highly recommend

This was my third time to Mesa and as always the food was great. <br/>This occasion was for my birthday and I was there with 7 other ladies. <br/>A few of the girls decided to order a bunch of things off the appetiser menu, including the gyros. <br/>When the bill came at the end of the night we seemed to have been charged for a main of the gyros, and the waiter who took our order apologised and told us that he remembered us ordering the smaller size. <br/>We were then however approached by an older man who appeared to be the owner of the restaurant, abusing us for not letting them know that we received a main size when it came to our table (because it was obviously our responsibility to know what sizes each dish were meant to be...) <br/>He was absolutely disgusting in the way he spoke to a table of women. We were all very disappointed to finish the night on this note, especially as it was a special occasion. <br/>Although the food was great, I wouldn't be recommending Mesa to anyone in the future.

DON'T EAT HERE! The service was very unfriendly and we heard the owner yelling in the kitchen all night. Our plates came out with caked on dirt on them, presumably from a previous meal that hadn't been cleaned properly. The food presentation is uncreative. There is definitely no love going into your food here. Do yourself a favour and pick another restaurant in the area!

The food will not disappoint; the waiters were friendly and provided excellent service. Pity about the front desk greeting; same lady cold and in personable. Been here on a few occasions; same, other than that an excellent Greek establishment.

This place is really good👍<br/><br/>The service is usually very warm and welcoming and the quality of the food is very high. <br/><br/>It can get a little expensive but the $12.50 take out souvlaki and chips is always a great option. <br/><br/>It’s also a great place to sit outside on a warm evening and enjoy a good quality meal with a bottle of wine.

The food overall was good though the calamari I had was tough and very over cooked. The service was fast but I did get a bit of a CBF from some staff but there working on a Friday night so probably fair enough. Price wise probably about right wouldn't say it's expensive but not value for money either.

Amazing!!! We came to Mesa last night and had the banquet. Loved every single bit of it! The food was incredible and the service was wonderful. It's a must try for any Greek loving foodies! 🇬🇷💙

Great service, waiter was bubbly and friendly and just a great sense of humour. Made the stay for lunch enjoyable.<br/><br/>Food was delicious, home cooked style. I had the yemista, nice and substantial.<br/><br/>Only negatives was the dry and undressed salad and the meat in my wife's souvlaki was cold when it came out.
Steph
We ordered the banquet and the food was abysmal. Absolutely terrible, especially the meat. Unfortunately the food wasn't the worst thing at Mesa. The service and staff were the most incompetent and rude I've come across. Other people's cutlery and food was dropped on our table and not cleaned up immediately, our meat came out 45 minutes late with no apology. An enquiry into why it was taking so long was met with rolling eyes and poor attitude. With the abundance of choice today in Melbourne, I'm surprised this place is still open for business. Avoid at all costs.
Theknifeandforktalk
Came for the banquet and was blown away with the variety, flavours and lovely service. Staff were super considerate and attentive. They didn't mind us wanting to take it slow between dishes. They weren't pushy when it got late and always asked if we needed more drinks. Food quality was fantastic!

Dined here on a Groupon. Upon booking we booked at 8pm due to prior arrangements and were unable to get there till 8:30, changed the booking and it was confirmed that it was okay. When we got there we weren't greeted in the best way but the owner I assume was extremely lovely to us and gave an authentic Greek vibe. However even though they knew we had a booking with a Groupon they said that we were there really late so they had to give our food to us all at one time! This made us feel really rushed in eating especially as they were open till 11 and were setting tables around us it was a strange vibe. Aside from that the place was gorgeous and felt very warming and family like! The food was absolutely beautiful especially the roasted capsicum as the tapas, it was out of this world and made me feel very nostalgic to my nonnas roasted capsicum! The dips were also delicious! Both the seafood platter and meat platter were delicious and ample sizes! The dessert platter was a bit of a let down as there was only one dessert (2 pieces of galaktobeureko) and 2 pieces of mandarin, apple, pear and orange! Wasn't sure if it was because we were there later and they ran out or another reason! So all in all it was a good meal the food was beautiful but the service made us feel somewhat rushed to eat quickly and get out! Would recommend if you go to go early to get the best experience.

Came in on a Sunday night and had to wait a few minutes before someone greeted us. The place was very loud and kids were running everywhere. Ordered the octopus, hand-cut chips and lamb souvlaki. Waited 20 minutes only for the waitress to come over and tell us they ran out of lamb because of a function they had going on. She suggested lamb skewers which we didn't really have much of a choice but choose. We waited another 20 minutes for our food only for one dish to be bought out after we asked for everything to come out at once after waiting so long. Kids from the function kept running about and screaming at the top of their lungs and smashing the walls around our table. Music was blasted so very loudly. Food was average, atmosphere was terrible. Some waitresses could put a smile on their face while working too. No one wants to approach an angry looking worker to ask for something.

Four of us went and my friend booked the voucher for 7 course meal, the food is lot better than I was expected, generous portion and great customer service. Value for money!!!

Great food!!! Very good quality of meats and their mezzes are to die for. I can just eat mezze platters and be more than happy. Love the set menu, must have the fetta pastelli and Kosta will make your experience all the better.

My wife and I dined here for the first time after being lured by a Groupon coupon and we are so glad that we were. Set in a double-storey Victorian building it looks inviting with an outdoor seating area and front brick fence. Once inside There is a bar area to one side of the entry with seating area and the restaurant itself has plenty of space between tables and a good ambience.<br/>It was service with a smile and the food was delicious and so plentiful that we asked for the last course to be packaged for take-away. I have had plenty of Greek food in the past, but this place was exceptional.<br/>We truly enjoyed the experience and will certainly be back!
Cooper
Get in early to get the best parts of the lamb gyros! We have eaten here a few time but mainly on the weekends and in groups of six for the banquet. Each time has been good however we had a small issue with out bill last time, watch the BYO charge, they hit us a few extra times which I raised with them. The staff are good but service drops a little when they get busy and we have found it depends if the boss is about or not, but no major issues. The food is delicious and allow plenty of time, there is no need to rush some things. The restaurant is clean and there is plenty of space. It does get loud but that's to be expected when there are many tables of more than three and four. We highly recommend and always eat too much!<br/><br/>Don't forget to click "FOLLOW" if you like my honest and how I saw it review.

Greek Feast .... "plenty" is the word<br/><br/>Make sure that you are hungry before coming here.<br/><br/>Johnson St, near Victoria Park station, good ol' Collingwood football ground nearby, previous classic working class now a "hipster" suburb. <br/><br/>What a cool "heritage" mansion to eat some Greek food, it looks good and inviting from the outside at dusk.<br/><br/>Upstairs and downstairs, open dining areas and some private dining area, good ambiance although those highback chairs & tables feels bulky and outdateds<br/><br/>Food wise, got the banquet for four, not the most refine, but enjoyable, excessive, plenty is probably the right word .... started with some bread (hard crust), antipasto; tomatoes and beans (very good), Saganaki (very salty), Mussels (highlight), <br/><br/>seafood platter; calamari (highlight). skewered prawns and fish (disappointing, too much going on with the topping)<br/><br/>meat; skewered chicken, lamb cutlets (highlight) and we can't finish the Souvlaki (over-cooked)<br/><br/>desserts; platter<br/><br/>and coffee - all on Groupon , not a bad deal<br/><br/>Short wine list, but the Shiraz we've chosen was fantastic for the $44 bill - Bailey's Glenrowan.<br/><br/>Service is quite pleasant, they seem to like the "quick" phase, "are you done?" happy to change plates & crockery between dishes.<br/><br/>Not the most refine, but a good venue for a function.

We had an excellent time at Mesa tonight , perfect private dining upstairs for a group of 13 and really fantastic Greek food! Loved : zucchini herb fritters, lamb off the spit , ouzo saganaki with scallops and prawns! Dessert was a abit of a hit and miss - the custard was not what we expected, but the loukomades and icecream were yum. Overall a memorable night out!
Selina
Busy usually means popular, though new staff or not trained on proper table service lets their reputation down. The food was good but we were served our entrees and mains at the same time, had to ask for water, silverware wasn't replaced, dip served without bread and just too busy to know what their customers need or maybe staff don't care. Such a shame I had hoped I would go regularly.
Mick
Honestly quite disappointed. Local to the area and this is my 5th time here over 3.5 years. First three times were excellent with caring service and great food. In the last 6 months however, things have gone rapidly downhill. Last time I was here I was served cold Moussaka. Raised it with the waiter and he yelled at the chefs but minimal apologies given. No discounts offered after the meal and nothing to say sorry for the experience.<br/>Tonight, large group. We were left largely unattended with very long periods between service. Waitresses were often rude or non-communicative when they arrived. Watched the head waitress yelling at all the others. Food was dished out in inadequate proportions as some people had moved around tables.<br/>Drinks almost never offered.<br/>I like the food but service seems crippled when a moderately large group appears. Shame because I really want to love this place 😢<br/><br/>Edit... 3 hours waiting on the meat course. Almost everyone else has left the restaurant and we have not been looked after. 10.30pm and I'm no longer hungry.<br/>Actually the WORST service I have experienced in the last 5 years.<br/><br/>Edited again... 3.5 hours and still no desert. Useless!<br/>Waitresses still have a miserable face like a slapped arse.<br/><br/>MESA, your relatively tasty food will not save you from your appalling service!!!!!!!!<br/><br/>Final judgement.... I am never coming back here. 👎🏼

It was a Beautiful resteraunt inside. Food was well presented and delicious . Meal overall was a refreshing change. Service average. Would not recommend this one for a romantic night out, more for family get togethers.

Love love love this place!!! Came here using a Groupon, the food was delicious and there was so much of it! The staff were attentive and accommodating, the place had a great atmosphere and service was wonderful. Great value for money, I definitely recommend it. I have booked to come here again in a few weeks time because we had such a great experience
Mario
Amazing food and service as always. At the owners discretion, we were given an off menu meze which was outstanding. Mesa never disappoints each time we visit.

Bought a Groupon voucher but couldn't use it because of a funeral in Europe. Had two options after coming back from Europe. The Friday wasn't fully booked but they wouldn't take any more Groupon vouchers for that night. The Sunday night unfortunately we couldn't go. We gave the voucher to our friends to use on Sunday, so at least it could be used. When I called about all this they weren't very friendly on the phone.<br/>Also told me we had to print the voucher which I think is not very customer friendly and bad for the environment as well. I hoped they would think along with us and maybe give us an option on a later date or allow one more voucher on the Friday. It's not in their best interest either when people buy a voucher but can't come I would think..<br/><br/>Our friends said the food was good and the service in the restaurant was friendly which why I still give quite a high score and might even try it again if another Groupon voucher comes out.

We were here last night, wow.<br/>The food was delicious, absolutely fantastic.<br/>The service was impeccable, staff were friendly and attentive, leaving us time between courses to chat, laugh and digest without more food being stuffed onto the table straight away.<br/>We had the banquet for 6 and ordered some extras as well, the zucchini chips were a huge bonus, my absolute favourite food and they were cooked perfectly.<br/>The bread rolls (which I am not supposed to eat) looked so hot and delicious I had to try a little crust.<br/>Absolute value for money, everything executed perfectly, you can see how much pride the owners and chefs take in their food and presentation.<br/>Extra marks for playing greek music all night, we loved it.<br/>Oh and the swordfish! To die for.<br/>I want to go back again tonight, it was such a treat.<br/>Thank you Mesa!
Irene
This restaurant is strongly NOT RECOMMENDED! Must be avoided!<br/>The manager/ owner with dreadlocks had a big a group on a table which got drunk and started exposing themselves showing their behinds and were very loud. Instead of the manager/owner escorting them out or at the very least stop serving them alcohol she kept on serving them alcohol and encouraging them. When it mentioned to her that this was disrespectful to us and the surrounding customers with young children she had an obnoxious response as " If you were offended YOU should move tables".<br/>This is not acceptable when you are dinning in a family restaurant which is considered fine dinning.<br/>Previous management were spot on, this "Lady" is very disrespectful to the customers and  runs this Restaurant for her own satisfaction and needs, NOT for families. If this was advertised as a pub we would have thought twice even stepping our foot in the door.

We recently visited this place and used a Groupon voucher for a 7 course Greek banquet. Overall food was food and service was polite. The dips were quite nice. Bread and capsicum salad were average.  Grilled seafood, chicken skewers, lamb cutlets were all quite delicious.  Saganaki was yum. Calamari was too salty. Coffee was alright. Amazing baklava was the highlight of our meal. We were very well-fed by this $55 Groupon voucher.

Yummiest, most succulant quality lamb souvalaki EVER. Far better then Jimmy Grants.  Grilled pita & lovely balance of salad. Good for a quick takeaway. So happy to have found this as a local option. Lovely to sit out the front and enjoy their generous banquet as well. Entrees were the yummiest, as was the lamb cutlets & shoulder. Fish perfect, (calamari not their best) Dessert lovely finish.

An excellent Greek restaurant with a great atmosphere and tasty food! We came here for dinner on a Thursday night, and the restaurant at 6:30 already had quite a few tables filled. The staff were friendly and quick to assist us with ordering. Perhaps because it was a weekday, but the tables were spaced very generously, and we all appreciated the extra space. <br/><br/>For entrée, we had a mix of dips and bread, saganaki and a tomatoey pasta. I absolutely loved the bread - so warm and crusty with a soft centre perfect for soaking up the delicious dip. The dips were great, a solid flavour and enough to accompany all the bread. The other two were also good, hard to get wrong.<br/><br/>For mains, we shared a mix of meats, calamari and a salad. The gyros was tasty, though perhaps a tiny bit dry for my taste. The chicken skewers were full of smoky flavour and really tender. The calamari was another very tasty dish, the flesh was tender and well flavoured.<br/><br/>For dessert, we had a mixed platter of fruit and Greek sweets (custard and Baklava). I loved the baklava, sweet and nutty, a great end to the meal!<br/><br/>Overall, I enjoyed the good mix of Greek food, it came in very generous servings and well flavoured. Nothing was bad, though nothing was extraordinary either. There was not a long wait for food, and the kitchen coped well with the large parties that arrived through the night.<br/><br/>It was definitely better arriving a little bit earlier, as by the time we were finishing dessert (8:30), there were a lot more people, and it got very noisy (not sure if this was the acoustics of the building or the large groups of people), and would make hearing your other fellow diners difficult.<br/><br/>The only other thing I would add was that we were at the one table in front of the bar rack, which obviously serves as a divider between the two spaces, as well as actually holding wine. Whilst it was only a little detail, having waiters squeezing next to you/over you a few times in one meal is a bit awkward, and I wouldn't want to sit there again.<br/><br/>A great place to try out if you have a large appetite for Greek food.

Went for dinner with my partner on Saturday night. Both our glasses were stained with wine (= not washed properly) and my plate had some food residues on it. I kindly asked to have the plate swapped over. No reasons asked, no apologies given. Service was quick but somewhat rushed and not attentive at all. Food was kind of edible but certainly not good quality: bread was not fresh, probably defrosted in the oven. Shaved lamb was the same quality you would expect from a kebab shop at 3am. Potatoes that came with the lamb were greasy and partially raw. As we went to pay the bill, nobody asked us whether we had had a good experience, probably anticipating our answer.

What fantastic service and good. The food just kept coming, fresh seafood was the winner! We had an early Fathers day celebration and where left thrilled! Highly recommend !!

Great atmosphere and prompt staff :) would definitely go back. The bread is home made and comes out warm which I love. Food is fresh and cooked with love like all Greek food.

Nice enough food and service, no real wow factor for me or the rest of group. Lots of other venues nearby that would be a better bet for a good lunch.

I absolutely love this place - we had the beef rissoles (melt in your mouth), saganaki, slow cooked goat (hearty and not gamey tasting at all), zucchini fritters (with melted feta in the centre - yummmm), dips and some lamb. Everything was very rich and very delicious - plus the staff were incredibly attentive. Ps - you need to try the backlava ice cream (it was a super pleasant surprise that we were not expecting). <br/><br/>Overall this place it great for a large group of friends and for hearty Greek meal.
FOOD TRIP
Mesa is a massive Greek restaurant that’s hard to miss as you go by. With a cheerful atmosphere and ample seating options, Mesa is good for any occasion. Service is friendly and efficient. Food is good, but not outstanding. Probably wouldn’t come back. We enjoyed a banquet made up of various dishes selected by the chef:
Spice Of Life
<br/>Dined with a voucher on frid night. Restaurant appears to be an old house transformed. A fireplace signalling the start of winter. Quite a large restaurant with parking on the street. It was buzzing.<br/>So promptly seated that i still had one arm in my jacket when entrees arrived. Plonked down with no commentary of what the dishes were. Felt like there was a "serve quick, out quick' approach. <br/>Food made up for this negative. . Entree was lovely - small tapas of green beans in passata, beef balls and beans (mayb bolotti)?). Warm bread with three types dips- guessing they were eggplant, salmon and tzatziki. All yummy. Then saganaki came but we had just started on the small dishes so we switched to the saganaki so it wouldnt get cold. <br/>Then came the meat and seafood platters. The serves were small but enough given it was a 7 course banquet. Fish was so salty think it was basa. Two tiny prawns and some calamari. Lamb cutlet were small but tasty. Chicken skewers were lovely but gyros slightly dry. Loved the fetta on top of the greek salad - it was big, creamy and less salty.<br/>Two large squares of a custard-type dessert and two tiny baklavas drizzled with maybe honey. Both yummy. Fruit on the side. <br/>Overall a pleasant dinner with just enough food. Timing and service let the experience down slightly.

The food here was fantastic. We ordered a banquet for eight people and boy o boy did we eat! The food didn't stop coming and we all ate to our full. I've been to a few Greek restaurants but I think this restaurants food is the best I've tasted so far.<br/>The ambiance was great and although the service wasn't too bad, there is room for improvement. A most enjoyable evening indeed.

Prompt service, great value on a Wednesday night ($35 per head not including drinks), and overall decent quality food (the lamb can be hit and miss); keeps us coming back!

We really weren't expecting much, but were blown away by how great this place was. The service was fantastic to start, and we had a banquet so got to try a bit of everything. Everything was delicious, and when I say "a bit", it was actually "a lot" (we couldn't eat it all and had to take some with us).<br/><br/>Definitely recommend giving Mesa a visit!

You really cannot go past this place for quality Greek food. The flavours genuine, wholesome and every bit of it healthy for the discerning diner. A large wine list available and even a coffee machine. tSituated in an enchanting double storey building in Johnstone st, Abbotsford. Staff are friendly but don't be enticed by them to push on the banquet menu, this is why I gave a 4.5 score.. try other dishes for sampling.....KALI OREXI......
Magniame Tutto
Great food, great experience, very friendly staff<br/>If I could pick on one thing don't berate your staff in front of customers, take it out back, makes everyone feel uncomfortable.<br/>Would definitely go back

This was a place that friends of mine experienced via a voucher - and there commentary was ‘lots of food!!’ <br/><br/>The menu that we had is outlined below:<br/><br/>• Dips - very nice but a small serving, but not a show stopper<br/><br/>• Eggplant with rice and meat - lovely, could eat this as a meal on its own <br/><br/>• Beans (Broad) - I never used to like these when I peeled them as a kid but they were tolerable (maybe good for a lover of this veg)<br/><br/>• Pasta - very nice, even if it was a touch of Italian (they were close at times)<br/><br/>• Bread - fresh and home made...only thumbs up from my side<br/><br/>• Fish and Calamari - The fish was steamed and quite reasonable - but could have had a taste booster with more garnish / chilli or whatever Greek overlay.<br/><br/>• Calamari was good!! Even though I don’t rate it as a meal unless it is fresh and grilled to get the subtle taste of this dish<br/><br/>• Chicken / Lamb off the slow cooker / rotisserie - excellent but I was too full to appreciate this to the fullest (but a good take home dish)<br/><br/>• Kebab’s (chicken) - nobody can mess with this dish and they were well liked….<br/><br/>• Lamb chops - no complaints and very good<br/><br/>• Dessert - generally good but I was full by then. <br/><br/>All in all, the family had a satisfying meal, did not complain when they left, and we were a little full.<br/><br/>Great servings, service was prompt and the venue is very spacious enough to cater for parties / groups.<br/><br/>Worth a follow-up!!

Been here a few times. The food is always great and there is lots of it, wine is good and service is excellent. Will be going back for sure!

This place is incredible. We just had the banquet and are bursting at the seams. Quality and quantity. The food was amazing, the best swordfish I have ever had, so fresh and chargrilled, was out of this world. The service was very good too, staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Owner, Paul was amazing! I'm a huge fan of this place and will be back next month for my birthday. Thank you, Paul. Your staff and food were absolutely amazing!!!!!!

DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
Talk about being well fed! As delicious as everything was, we struggled getting through this seven-course banquet and ended up having to take some of it home. We dined with a Groupon voucher so the total was only $55 for 2 people, making this a bargain. The service was prompt and friendly, and the atmosphere warm and inviting.

"...WE LOVED IT ~ FAB FOOD & PLENTY OF IT ~ MY KINDA SERVICE ~ FULL O' LIFE SPACE..."<br/><br/>Have driven past MESA GREEK CUISINE, Johnston Street, Abbotsford, so many times..<br/><br/>Always admired the building.. Looks fairly upmarket.. Thought it might have been one of those contemporary Mediterranean and 'Somewhere Else' fusion restaurants.. You know, where they do the three only.. very lonely.. items on the big white dinner plate.. Hey, we steer clear of that sort of caper.. Nope, not for us.. We're eaters not grazers..!!<br/><br/>Last night, caved into my curiosity and finally gave them a go.. WOW was I so wrong...!!!<br/><br/>Yes, it's a classy digs, but the food is authentic, home-style, super delicious and generous.. Drinks are good, too.. Staff are fast, energetic, no BS - you're there to eat, they're there to facilitate it.. <br/><br/>We had the set menu banquet for four:<br/><br/>-Started with a trio of house-made dips; pan-fried saganaki cheese; meatballs in tomato salsa; baked lima beans; beef & feta filled pasta rings, HOUSE-MADE Greek-style bread...<br/><br/>-Then came calamari; white fish fillets; whole king tiger prawns on skewers...<br/><br/>-Followed by lamb cutlets; chicken skewers; chicken & lamb off the gyros; Greek-style salad...<br/><br/>-We finished with a dessert platter, again to share: custard slice, baklava, selection of freshly cut fruits...<br/><br/>-A glass of wine or a soft-drink was included in the package - impressed by the glass bottles of coke...<br/><br/>-We finished with a Greek coffee..<br/><br/>The food, ALL OF IT, was FRESH, perfectly cooked, CLEAN, well-seasoned, DELISH - We couldn't fault anything.. honestly..<br/><br/> ##Standouts:<br/><br/>- The bread was amazing, I mean it, we had to order another 2 baskets..<br/><br/>- The calamari were full of flavour, tender, NOT oily..<br/><br/>- The fish fillets were fresh, plump, firm, tasty.. [pretty sure it was Aust rockling]<br/><br/>- The lamb cutlets. to die for.. I'm gonna dream about these..!!<br/><br/>- The meat off the gyros was chunky, succulent, juicy, tender.. [so often, it's a bit scraggy, salty and dry] <br/><br/>- The feta on the main salad was Greek Dodoni feta.. unmistakably piquant and morish.. amazingly yum with fresh tomato.. so many places use the cheaper, bland Aussie-made version.. [it's not real good.. sorry, like comparing cheese to chalk]<br/><br/>- Their extra virgin olive oil was the real thing.. raw, fruity, green-tasting.. [most of that bread went into the dunking of the juices.. hey, the only way to do it..] <br/><br/>We were seriously stuffed with fabulous fresh food - I can't wait to go back...!!!<br/>These guys are the real deal - NO skimping on QUALITY or QUANTITY...<br/><br/>[Cost: $50 each for the banquet, $30 total on extras - Worth every cent..]<br/><br/>Visited on Friday 11 March 2016 for dinner.

If a traditional Greek restaurant with delicious food that comes without all the bells and whistles and a tad tacky then this is decent place to try. <br/>Went here with a friend on a Friday night, reasonably busy although we booked a table not to mention they've plenty of outdoor seating too which is nice. <br/>We ordered the banquet which was the perfect amount of food if not too much! It came with everything like meat, seafood, salad, cheese, dips, everything! Some food was a little too oily but to be expected for Greek and the dessert was a bit of a fail but all in all delicious! The staff are incredibly nice although can feel a little rushed and the prices might be a tad on the expensive side for why it is. <br/>I'd go back for a super casual dinner but nothing to rave about!
Silk_rr
Wow wow wow! Service was off the hook - so friendly and lovely staff. Then was the food... Amazing and delicious! It was like being in someone's home which is such a lovely experience. We had the Groupon banquet and sometimes these can be stingy but we literally had to be rolled out of there! Stand out dishes were the giant baked beans (YUM!!), zucchini fritter (so soft and delicate), calamari, lamb cutlets, fish, chicken gyros... Just everything was so tasty. Thanks for a truly delicious meal Mesa!

You need to eat here. Simple. This is by far one of the best Greek restaurants I've ever eaten at.....and I'm married to a Greek.<br/><br/>They get points for:<br/><br/>Amazing food....AMAZING!<br/>Highlights were the prawns and entree dishes <br/>Excellent service <br/>Ice cold Mythos beer<br/>Warm and friendly atmosphere <br/><br/>Can't beat this place. Highly recommended. As a Forkwit, I'm mighty impressed.<br/>

Came here for a Sunday lunch, the place was really busy but the service was still on point. We had 8 courses and by the end felt like we had a proper Greek style feast and were so full that we could barely stand up. Grilled meat platter was flavoursome and the baklava desert was soo tasty, not too sweet and very nutty.<br/><br/>Will be back again to try their other dishes.

Went there with a Groupon voucher on a Friday night. Beautiful deco, soft music, very friendly and efficient staff. The 7 course banquet was a lot of food! Most dishes were enjoyable. Our favorites were calamari, the meat platter with lamb cutlets gyros and chicken skewers. Tender and full of flavour. We really enjoyed this dining experience.
Jeff
We had the set menu which was a very good experience. The only down notes were a few of the meze which were served between cold and lukewarm, but it picked up from there. The calamari was very tender, the lamb cutlets precisely broiled and also very tender, dips all house-made. The service was prompt and friendly, the interior cheerful. Would recommend the set menu but would advise not tucking through the first three courses or you won't make it through to dessert, although they were kind enough to give us containers for the overage.

Just got back from having lunch, and all i can say is wow.The seven course banquet was amazing beautiful fresh food melt in your mouth stuff. The staff were so friendly,i can not find one fault. We will be back many times to come.

If you are looking for authentic flavours of Greece, you should visit Mesa.  The service is friendly and efficient.  The produce is as fresh as it gets, all served with a warm smile and pride in the food Mesa produces.  We ordered the banquet and course after course, we were tempted with well seasoned grilled meats including frenched lamb cutlets, delectable dips served with fresh, crunchy warm bread, saganaki cheese, melt-in-your mouth calamari, prawn skewers and grilled swordfish, crisp mixed greek salad, meatballs in a delicious tomato and olive oil concasse and much more.   The servings are generous and the flavours well balanced.  We liked the restaurant setting, where various dining rooms each give a slightly different ambience and outdoor dining is also an option.  Street parking was plentiful on an early Thursday evening.  I also noticed they currently have a $12.50 souvlaki special for lunch which includes chips.  I'm definitely going back to try that.  Highly recommended.

Had lunch at Mesa today, the meals were absolutely beautiful and the service was fantastic!  We shared a number of entrees and everyone had chose their own main - everything was deliciousAlready planning our next visit with family and friends!

I cannot review the food although i am positive it is probably lovely. But i would just like to mention the upset toward the attitude/ bad customer service of whoever spoke to my partner on the phone today.<br/><br/>I purchased a groupon voucher to use at Mesa and made an online booking through dimmi (link also was provided through groupon). However i will add i thoroughly checked the availability and read the fine print before i was happy to go ahead.<br/><br/>There was nothing to mention this could not be used on Valentines Day which is the only reason i bought the voucher for.<br/><br/>We were contacted today to be advised the vouchers are not available for that day as there will be a special menu, also we should of "called" not made an appointment through dimmi.<br/><br/>Mind you because i am such a thorough person i mentioned in the additional comments box of dimmi that i am coming in for Valentines day using a groupon voucher, This adds to my point you would never of known had i not mentioned it and now I'm glad i did.<br/><br/>If that's the case of the set menu that is very understandable, however I'm truly doubtful every customer coming in that day will be coming in because of Valentines day.<br/><br/>My main reason to put my review out there is just the general attitude of it all there was no apology or anything along those lines and just a general lack of empathy and not even bothering to try and help with our concerns.<br/><br/>Even groupon who are not at fault kindly apologized to myself when they didn't have too. Now I'm not saying you had to change your plans but a simple "I am truly sorry about the inconvenience i really should check in with groupon that it's mentioned on our ad, is there a possibility i can offer you another day or even call groupon to sort it out for you?"<br/><br/>Now that's customer service, you need a lesson or 2.

Seriously really good Greek food and the service was incredible. Food was fresh and delicious. Excellent value getting the set menu. Highly recommend whether it's dinner for 2, family or large group. Atmosphere very cosy. Did I mention how good the food was? A must!
Vinny
Kinda pricey but definitely tasty.. Had the beef rissoles and chicken skewers both were pretty good. The saganaki was amazing and the breads they give the table were so good too.. Service was good and overall pretty good place

This is another favourite - we live across the road from it so to say it's a local is an understatement (there's Mesa, Dr Morse, Rita's Canteen and Admiral Cheng Ho all within 100 metres of each other on this strip of Johnston St).<br/><br/>Classic Greek menu with a few specials to vary the mix. Big groups - the $50 per head banquet is perfect, but allow 3 hours minimum (and it's a lot - and I mean, a lot - of food). Wednesday night is lamb off the spit and whilst all the meats are generally excellent, some of the best swordfish ever comes out of the kitchen. Saganaki to start, swordfish with a salad or zucchini fritters and a bottle of Shiraz (with the lamb cutlets usually on the other side of the table)... fabulous.<br/><br/>And so friendly.

I dragged the whole family to Mesa on Friday night, they didn't want to leave, all 7 of us loved the meal, service and vibe of the place, well done a great banquet, I'll be back

Fantastic Green restaurant. I have never had a bad dish. Whether you get the set menu or just order a few dishes you won't be disappointed or hungry. Best Greek food I have had in ages!
Belinda Tokalolo
Fabulous Traditional Greek. Definitely make a booking this place packs out. We waited half an hour for the table with no booking. Was worth the wait.

What a great venue to dine at. We visited Mesa Greek Cuisine for Friday lunch and had the souvlakis, these were by far the best souvlaki we have had in a very long time. You can actually see the meat on the spit being cooked in kitchen. The service was prompt and can not fault the service. The staff were pleasant and attentive. The menu includes vegetarian dishes as well as gluten and dairy free choices. We also viewed the dinner menu, we cannot wait to taste the entire menu. The restaurant is family fun and operated and were lucky enough to meet the new owners Paul and Tanya. Everything is made fresh in house including bread, dips, desserts and much more. Definitely worth the visit!!

Pretty standard Greek fare of a reasonable standard. Nice setting inside an refurbished house on Johnson Street Abbotsford. If you feel like Greek banquet style dining it isn't a bad option, and certainly beats Jim's in my opinion.
MrsA
Simple, fresh, delicious comfort food enjoyed next to a warm fireplace on a cold evening. Excellent attentive service. The Ouzo Saganaki with prawns and salad just became a favourite. And you can't go past the taramasalata accompanied by fresh homemade bread. YUM!
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Mesa is a popular Greek joint. I would highly recommend the set menu as it offered a taste from a wide range from their menu. There was a bit of an interminable wait for the mains but all in all, it was a pleasant (and tasty!) experience.
Db Monty
Wow. Delicious. We really enjoyed the whole snapper, and char grilled lamb skewers for main. But the baclava ice-cream and Greek donuts for dessert were really outstanding!! Not cheap, but excellent quality, in decent-sized serves.
Sean Stove
The food here is fantastic! Beautiful fresh authentic Greek flavours. The service is quick and efficient, and the servings generous. Don't miss the specials board, I was lucky enough to come on a Wednesday when there is lamb on the spit. The amazing thing is that for 10 bucks you can get a lamb souva to takeaway that is completely off the chain... stuffed overflowing with lamb. The. Best. In. Melbourne. That is all.
Cheeseburger Anyone? "Where's The Sauce"?
Worth the drive. Came here with some friends as we bought a cudo voucher online. <br/>IT WAS WELL WORTH IT! being greek I always have greek food around me, especially as I live in oakleigh. But I have to say this is some of the best service and food I have received! The staff are friendly and very prompt. The food is very fresh and tasty. You get so much food which is worth what you pay! Great gyro (lamb/chicken) <br/>Delicious zucchini fritters. Yummy fresh home made bread. The Sword fish and calamari is Devine. And the beans n soutsikakia (meat balls) are so tasty! Thanks guys for Awsome greek food! We all left full and won't need to eat for a week Now! :)
Robyn
Great food and service for birthday function. We celebrated a family birthday lunch here and had a set menu. The venue is lovely and the food was fresh and delicious - way too much of it though! They catered not only for a few vegetarians amongst us but also one vegan at very short notice. The meat eaters and vegos were all very happy! Staff were very tolerant and accommodating of our cake and speeches and all service was friendly, polite and efficient. In short, it was a great venue for a small function.

Avoid !!!!. We were really looking forward to this resturant and we were extremely disappointed. The waitress couldn't hear us nor did she understand the menu. After letting her know tap water was fine she brought us an expensive bottle ($8) of normal water. Like the other patron said the calamari was horrible " Possibly from Cosco in bulk " they said. The saganaki was a 3inch slice tiny!! For $15. My main was $33 for 4 peices of prawns with the shells on !!! Way too noisy. Way too overpriced for what you Recieve. No flavor and the waitors watch your every move no time to finish your drink and the second you put your fork and knife down your plate is taken from you. I think I missed out on eating my last prawn as the waitress took my plate away before asking if I was finished. Lots of other great Greek restaurants in melbourne try those.
Sandykalice25
Avoid. We all were looking forward to trying this place out last week. Unfortunately we were completely disappointed. Our waitress couldn't hear us. also in a place that charges over $33 for a main they should hire waitors that can understand the menu. The food. Wow probably the worst Greek food we've ever had. The prawn main for $34 was 4 prawns with the shells on. Can you believe that ? We actually laughed. Saganaki was a tiny triangle slice for $15. No flavor. Very expensive for a one star resturant. Try the other many fabulous Greek resturants in Melb actually cooking beautiful Greek food.
Kimmy_desu
Had a nice meal here tonight. Enjoyed the zucchini fritters, pickled tomatoes and chicken skewers the most. The calamari was average (bought in bulk from costco?) and as I have read in previous comments, I would also have preferred pita bread instead of normal bread with the dips. Had to wait over half an hour for the mains to come out after finishing the entrees, but I suppose it's understandable as they were busy, but by the time the mains came we could only have a skewer each before we decided we were too full for the rest, so we took them home. The chicken skewers were quite tender. Their Greek coffee is also nice! Would recommend.

Great atmosphere, great service & great food! We will certainly be back in the near future.

I first heard about Mesa Greek Cuisine from a fella I used to work with. "The best Greek food outside of my mother's kitchen" were his exact words. Big words. Being an honorary Greek , I made a mental note to go there. Fast forward a few months and it popped up as Urbanspoon's weekly special,* so off we went. We started with some Saganaki. It's cheese and it's fried. I'm not sure there are many more perfect foods in the world.
