Reviews Mahendra's Indian Cuisine

Ive been getting takeaway here for the past 5 years once a week and i can say this is the best indian food ive ever had. The curries are homemade with the spices in the kitchen. I love the naan bread too made fresh and always soft and delicious. My usually is a mild butter chicken with rice, raita and spinach and cheese naan bread. Just fantastic!

Love this place - looks super dodgy on the outside but the food is fantastic.  Fresh - cooked on the spot in front of you - we highly recommend the chicken tikka masala!

Pretty delicious Indian. My husband and I are quite picky when it comes to our naan bread and unfortunately this is the one area that Mahendra's falls short on. Their curries are delicious though and it is some of the best priced Indian in Brisbane. Don't let the location or shopping centre turn you off - this is quality Indian food.

It was at night time, and starting to get a bit into the near-late part of the night. My housemate's daughter was feeling hungry, and she likes to have most of the food out. Being down in Sydney, one thing she surprisingly doesn't get a lot of there is Indian food and that was what she particularly felt like. She is a simple lass, she just wanted a butter chicken. Also, there is a bit of a high standard with the marks here. The place had to have at least a 4.0 average on this site, and there is getting to be a bigger number of that with marking algorithms making more sense, however, that is still a bit of an ask. Nevertheless, narrowing the range down to what was nearby and Indian cuisine, the short list was manageable on one hand. After a bit of discussion and locating where the places were, this one was the chosen destination. The place is located just off to the side on a main road, and it is more or less blink and you will miss it. Blending in with a few other bland office spaces, once you see it walk on in and it is warm and welcoming inside.

This was partially on my part, so don't take it as criticism to the place, some of the ordering was haphazard. You know sometimes when you see the table next to you, or a few tables across, that someone orders something that looks really good? That has happened plenty of times to me, and the urge is to ask them what it is so you know to order that. However, I often hesitate with the inferred implications. What doesn't hurt though is asking the waitstaff and that is what I did. Since there is a good and active level of customer service here, it was possible to get the waitress in the middle of her rounds to do exactly that. A couple of girls were on the next table, and they had these pakoras which looked quite good. You could say it was "order envy" there - a shorter way to summarise what I have meant in that past paragraph. Basically, that is how we ended up with some potato voda. Those will be discussed later, but that is part of the service.

So with that anecdote out of the way, the service here is at a decent standard. It probably won't meet the "standards" of being professional or anything, however, I am not one to expect that. Instead, they just have to deliver well, and having an effective system in place as well as a good and pleasing personality. Things are fairly flexible, and it is all cooked to order, so things are done very much in the vein of taking it as it comes.

Getting both the look of the place, and its menu down to a simple description, Mahendra can best be described as a curry house. What I mean by that, is the restaurant space is a simple square, with maybe a few different decorations around the place, and most of the tables are basic, and simple. Lighting is not too bad, and a TV plays in the corner. Aesthetics are not up to the best standard, so let us leave it at that, shall we? With the kind of food that they serve, well it is Indian. A few of the basic curries, cheap mind you - I was wondering if I was looking at a far outdated menu when I saw the prices, which are based on either beef, or chicken, or lamb, some seafood, and a good range of vegetarian options. To go on the side is a range of accompaniments, some rice dishes and several lots of naan bread to mop up the sauce. As well as gulab jaman, and a few other things to grab from the fridge, that is about it. Less is more I have found to be used in place of more is less, but this time, I do think the former is the right term to be using here.

Upon getting to the table, the first starter (on the house) was some papadams. Crispy, slightly oily, and just like a big chip, it was a good beginning to the meal. Next, it was the potato voda (albeit it was the last thing ordered, the were quick to cook them up and serve them), these were a very good starter. There were three of them, and on the side was a small tub of tamarind chutney. The tamarind chutney was nice and thick, with a good and distinct flavour. As for the potato voda; now. those are worth ordering. They are a basically potato patties with a spice mixture mixed through them. These were really well cooked, having a thick layer that was crispy on the outside, and the potato was mashed and tender inside, with just the right amount of garam marsala put in. It definitely had a bit of tanginess on the tongue, but it wouldn't have you reaching for the milk - though I am not one to be really judging it upon that. I am glad I convinced the other two to get these.

As for the curries, as well as the butter chicken, there was a beef rogan josh and a lamb bhoona gosht. The first two were ordered as mild, what a pair of wimps. With mine, the most latter I went in for the kill. I got it at a medium-hot level of spice. All of these were really good. There is no need for an introduction to butter chicken, since how many times can it be discussed in actuality? For the mild curry lovers, it is always a good choice. Especially here, with the meat being so tender, and the sauce being both creamy and thick with tomato and cashew nut being the dominant flavours. That one is a winner whatever way you put it. The rogan josh is a bit of a darker and more complex curry, adding ginger, garlic, coriander and a spice mixture into the works. Also good, with tender beef. We have ourselves another winner.

To get on the side with the curry, because it is essetially essential, I ordered a naan. The one that was ordered was a garlic naan. As well as that, I also got a mango lassi. Both of them quite good. Maybe the naan was a bit smaller than usual, however, quality of it was fantastic, and the flavours were so stark and bold. There were actual bits of minced garlic spread on top the bread. It was cut into bits, and those bits could be further ripped apart - indicating a good, soft texture for the bread - and went well with the curry sauce. Finishing it off, the mango lassi was what it needed to be - cold, thick, and fruity.

Recently, I have had a range of Indian that was decent and serviceable but none of it had really gotten to such heights as it was here in a while. When it comes to Indian places, a funny and inverse indication of quality is to think the crappier the place looks, often the more authentic and tasty the food will be. This was the case at Mahendra. You got a real feel for the passion of the food in here, which was all hot and filling. Down to the bone, it really gets the best aspect of the cuisine down pact, which is that it is wholesome, filling and reliable - they are there for the late night traveller, and welcoming to any diners. For that, they are providing some of the best Indian on any side of town.

Incredible! We have to yet to find an Indian restaurant that compares to Mahendra's within Brisbane! They have a relatively small menu, but what they do cook they do very, very well. Delicious and authentic curries!

Fast quality food, excellent service, excellent price, only let down is lack of sparkling water option. Must be close to the best Indian in Brisbane.

I really enjoy the food at Mahendra's. Their service is great and relatively fast. There are a large range of vegetarian meals which is nice to see. Overall, a nice little Indian restaurant.

Fantastic food at a budget price!. I have been to Mahendra's for dinner 4 times and have taken advantage of their lunch special several times now and plan to keep going there for both. The service is friendly and prompt, the flavours are fabulous and the servings are always way more than I can fit into my belly. The Chicken Tikka entree is just amazing and if you aren't hugely hungry can do as a main meal. The pakora and samosas are wonderfully spiced and very filling. The shining star of the menu for me is their Chicken Keshri Korma which has a flavour combination unlike anything I have eaten before and I have to keep going back specifically to order that dish. Rice comes complimentary with your meal and the Naan and Paratha breads are very reasonably priced which makes a nice change from a lot of other indian restaurants. I have yet to have enough room left to try a dessert but I hope to at some stage.

Love, love, love this place. Look no further.. We have now tried Mahendras for the second time, just to check that we weren't fooling ourselves... This simple place dishes out some of the most impressive indian food I have ever had. Ever. Our favourite is definitely the Gosht do Pyaza, and the lamb Korma is definitely a winner also. Rice is complimentary with every curry. Naan is light and fluffy. Service with a smile from a lovely, hardworking family. Don't let the simplicity of the dining room put you off. Unbelievable.

Their food tastes great and enjoy going there each time and prices are soo good, I'm a baby when it comes to hot or medium curries so I get mild curries and they get it right everytime! Honestly can't complain.

I dont normally have indian food. But I had the lamb korma at the Robertson State School fete indian food stall sponsored by Mahendras and I can say that that was the best lamb korma I have ever tasted in and outside of a container box. If you like indian food definitely give them a go. Great food is very rare in Brisbane.

I was introduced to Mahendra's by an old friend who lives locally. He had been raving for years about "the best curry in Brisbane". Finally I was able to attend and find out for myself. I ordered a beef vindaloo, and what was delivered to the table was by far the most fresh, tomato based vindaloo I have ever tasted. Not too much salt or sugar in it. My taste buds sung with pure joy. The staff were personable, cheery and very pleasant. I am utterly impressed. I'll be back for sure!!!

Best Indian restaurant in Brisbane. The service is always warm, accommodating and the chef can cook pretty much anything on request. Have been visiting this restaurant restaurant for years and will still drive halfway across town to indulge in a feast. Prices are very reasonable and the food is always freshly cooked. Beautiful!

This place is good!. So we eat Indian almost as much as we eat Vietnamese - in fact it would be a 50/50 split I guess. I lived in India 20 years ago for two years, so I am fussy about my Indian - it has to be good, really good - not just the mediocre that so many places here serve up. Every so often we find a gem and once found we will go back ... and back ... and back.

I am a big fan of Halim's at Rosalie - they really do the most authentically "indian" butter chicken around, but I have to say Mahendra's has given Halim's a run for it's money in the butter chicken stakes.

My husband works at Coopers Plains and finally gave Mahendra's a try for lunch recently and thank goodness he did. He started raving about the place, then one night brought home take away - I don't think Indian takeaway is ever all that good as it needs to be eaten fresh out of the kitchen as opposed to out of a plastic container 20 minutes later. But even the take away was pretty nice.

So finally, when we were washed out of the Divali festivities at Slacks Creek on Saturday night, we made our way here to eat in house. Wow!!! Everything we had was fantastic - the butter chicken (our standard rating dish), the samosa's, the chickpea patties - all of it was really really good. And I love that everything is cooked fresh right in front of you (well behind the counter, but you can see the cooking going on). Super impressed with that. My only complaint I guess was the naan was just okay - cooked flat on the stove top rather than in a tandoor oven, but it was still very edible, just not as fluffy or as crunchy as my preferred naans.

And then there was the bill - super delicious tasty food at ridiculously low prices - talk about value for money!!! Mahendra's is now well and truly on our return visit again and again list!

My fav indian curry place. Have been trying the local restaurants around Acacia Ridge and this one stands out for the great curries. The location is not the best for an evening stroll but you can always get parking. Prices are good value for the quality you get.
In the evening it pays to phone order in advance if you want to pick up as it can be quite busy and you might have to wait quite a while otherwise.

Best in Brisbane. After staying in the Indian precinct of Kuala Lumpur and experiencing the tastiest butter chicken ever my wife and I made it our mission to find an Indian restaurant that could compare to it. It took us almost a year to discover this little gem and we frequent this restaurant weekly now as a result. The food is fantastic, the service is friendly and the value is great! If you dine in you are guaranteed to go home full as they don't charge for rice at all. The only downside is that they don't cook their Naan in a tandoori oven which is the only thing that could make it taste better than it already does!

Best Indian in the southern suburbs. My husband and I regularly take away from here and LOVE it. Prices are exceptionally reasonable, we just wish we could make it in for the lunch specials.

All the food is made to order and I particularly recommend the cheese and spinach naan and chicken madras.

It may not be in the most prime of locations, but it's worth the risk.
