Review Bakery On O'connell - Adelaide

Nate Gil Barshad
Nice desert place. Lots of options, easy to take away or dine in. Nice service. Believing that as they open 24hrs, that give night-timers like us a place to stay and chat. Nothing to complain about.
Kim
I actually said 'oh my god' when I bit into the lemon meringue cronut. It was absolutely divine. Some cronuts are dry and crunchy, this had the right amount of flaky crust and juicy insides. We will definitely be back.
Christopher Bailey
Absolutely satisfied after that visit! The satay pie was amazing, the Vienna Hot Chocolate was like velvet and the Van Gogh cupcake tasted as good as it looks. No wonder why they won best bakery in SA!
Matty Farmer
I love how I can go here anytime, many times I've headed there after a late shift with friends and family to enjoy something warm and delicious šŸ˜

I am going all in and saying this is probably my favourite bakery. Not only is the choice excellent, but the staff are fantastic. They place is always busy, but there are plenty of staff and they are quick to serve. Enjoyed my first ever O'Connell St breakfast there so much, went back that night for Soup and Crusty Toast for dinner.
Carol Overweel
Always helpful staff, great selection of savoury and sweet treats. Definitely worth a visit šŸ‘

Great place for your morning coffee. They value your time and try to serve asap after you place an order. Dine in and take away facilities are available. Dine in area was clean and tidy, but toilets was not properly cleaned.

I havenā€™t been here in a long time, decided to come and try the brisket Mac n cheese pieā€¦ to say the least it was absolutely amazing!! Enjoyed every mouthful. Shame itā€™s only an short time thing but please make it a permanent menu item. Will definitely come back. Like the new location

This is our first time in Adelaide and we came across the bakery, what a amazing place, there is so much to choose from, very friendly, I saying it's the best bakery I've ever been too Good job ļæ½ļæ½

I usually travel pretty far to come to this place for the cronut so I have to say for the price of what you pay it was disappointing to get a cronut last night that was the size of a soft serve ice cream at hungry jacks. ļæ½
Troy Carter
Was just over the road having a pint at the Oak and thought I'd meander on in for a snag roll and a custard berliner. Absolutely top notch grub, you've got a great group of guys n gals and pretty bloody good prices. Will be back!
Erin Morrison
Thank you for having so many vegan options to choose from and having them all listen on a separate menu too!
Toni Balchin
Usual problem everytime what do we choose, there's something for everyone great atmosphere and the staff actually look like they love working there well done guys. Great hang out spot if it had 10 stars you'd get that from me ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½

Love the Oā€™Connell bakery ,it very yumm place to go when we visited my mum
Andrew Williss
Eh? Whatā€™s all the fuss about? Food was plain and ordinary, and the coffee was average. Sorry...ā€œDonā€™t believe the hypeā€
John Vaughan
Great vegan selection. Took the advice of the young girl behind the counter and had the lentil and chickpea pie.....awesome.
Chris Jaeschke
Have been a customer since the bakery opened, they have always had great staff, great service & excellent product. Tried the Country Pie for the first time, this is the best pie you have produced. Well done!
Rhondell Avins
Fantastic range of baked goodies. Excellent coffee. Very friendly staff and atmosphere.
Michele Warren
Yum yum yum. My apple muffin was delicious especially when warmed up
Mandi Garnet
The young lady that made me 2 caramel thick shakes this morning. Thank you very much they were delightful.
Maja Mezek
Best coffee in Adelaide great food and incredible staff.
Peter Akiki
This place is good for hanging out but especially late night catch up as it's a 24 hours bakery. It has great baked goods but it's not always perfectly clean(e.g. tables wiped down) which is the down side. Another down side is how busy it gets sometimes.
Georgia M
Yummy pastries, they are fresh and there's a large variety. There is sometimes a line but it is worth the wait.

Just want you want on a lazy Public Holiday morning. The Bakery on Connell is just a quick walk from Wellington Square where I was staying.
At 10:30 in the morning it was busy, buzzy and full of atmosphere.
Truly good Brekky Wrap and superb coffee... all at a reasonable price. They even had some Sriracha Sauce (and other options) on the side.
Service was very friendly and quick.
This was exactly what I was looking and hoping for for my first day in Adelaide.
Highly recommended for a slow start to the day....šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘
And they are open 24/7 and they do pie floaters.
This quickly became my morning ritual for my week in Adelaide...
The apple and custard tarts were absolutely delectable...
Wish I could take this place back home with me...

There is an excellent selection of sweet and savoury pastrys to choose from. And also a good variety of drinks. It has every thing a good bakery should have. It is also open 24/7.

Bakery on Oā€™Connell 24/7 is abundant with deliciousness from pies to Kitchener buns. Weā€™ve tried many things here like the cronuts, pastries, custard tarts and brownies. Everything is a fave!

I had heard so much hype about this place and wanted to check it out (especially as it new to adelaide too!)

When I walked in, the tables were full, but my friends and I managed to find a seat after checking out the wide assortment of sweet and savoury items on display, all of them made my mouth water!!

I settled on the red velvet cupcake, which was 4$, and due to the price I initially had reservations about purchasing it.

However, when I took my first bite out of the cupcake, all my reservations vanished and i loved it so much. The cupcake was sweet, but not too sweet, and the texture was amazing!

Although I really loved the taste, it would have been better if the items were a bit cheaper, but would definitely come again!

Erica George
This place never disappoints me. Their Kransky rolls are amazingly delicious. Their sweet treat even so more. Last time I tried the Mars cannoli it did not disappoint. The red velvet cupcake was also moist and beautiful. The quice is absolutely buttery and delight to the taste buds. The hot chocolate ( white hot chocolate) although is a bit of a turned down..over rated I suppose. Tastes like milk and sugar to me! But for everything else spot on!
Kanika Bahl
One of my favourite bakery. The quality, variety and taste is truly amazing. The best part is that it is 24*7. Will keep going back to this amazing place :)
Sarah Katherine
Consistently good pastries, cakes, pies, and a clean space to dine. Plus with a 24 hour opening so cravings can be satisfied at any possible time, what's not to like?! Bakery on O'Connell is my fave bakery in Adelaide. Every visit I try something new but still haven't worked my way through all the offerings. Best thing I've had? A golden gaytime cannoli. Trust them on that one!
Gee
Coffee was too watery and weak. The pie was quite nice though but definitely not a 4. Had the egg & bacon sausage roll and a shepherds pie. Apparently this place is 24 hour.
Lucielle Von Trapp
I'm glad they're open at all hours of the night, more Adelaide businesses that sell food should BUT they sell the absolute worst hot chocolates I've had in my LIFE
Caitlin Shepperson
Every time Iā€™m in Adelaide I come here, and order the banana bread which is amazing. Great food, good coffee, fast service, reasonable prices and exceptionally friendly and lovely staff. Will continue to come back here. Only criticism is I wish they had more vegetarian sandwiches so I could buy lunch as well!
DuckieLovesToEat
We have been told that kitchener bun is very popular here in Adelaide. Because of this, I have been searching around Adelaide for a good Bakery to try this. Luckily enough, I have stumbled upon this popular bakery that is open 24/7. It is such a huge place where you can enjoy what you bought and eat it there. It has a huge selection of both savoury and sweet treats. It also appears that they sell savoury and sweet packs that you can take home or even to a party. I came here for the sole purpose of just getting kitchener bun, but I was enticed by the display cabinet of donuts, lamington, and Nutella bomb. I have to restrain myself from buying more. Out of the four, I thoroughly enjoyed the lamington. The donut with sprinkles on top has slightly dry dough that I didn't enjoy much. As for the famous kitchener Bun, it reminded me of the cream donuts that we used to eat when we were kids back in NZ. I will definitely come back to try their savoury treats one of these days.
David Bailey
Regular place to visit. Friendly staff. Good as open 24 hours and solid bakery good. Lad enjoys chocolate muffins. Had a good apple tart. Will be back

Open 24/7 for all your pastry / cakey needs! When I'm having a party this is my go to place for desserts - everyone loves the jelly cakes, vanilla slices and other sweet goods and they make them in the perfect party sizes.Ā National donut day recently gave me an excuse to stop in and they are still as good as ever.
Takemetoyourlocal
I walk past this bakery most days, no matter what time I pass by it is always filled to the brim with chatty customers.
The staff are very attentive. Even if the line is by the door, you'll get served in no time. Most people are standing around because they cannot decide from the wide range of traditional or new trendy treats.
This place is a great grab and go, grab a yoghurt/fruit tub for breakfast, a panini for work, and a tray of party pies to keep in the freezer. Bakery on O'Connell has it all.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
It was National Doughnut Day so couldnā€™t resist getting some doughnuts to celebrate. This place seemed to be highly rated so went by this. Located on Oā€™Connell Street in North Adelaide, it was humming along with a constant stream of people going in and out. There is a large eat in area. Lots of goodies on display including bread, pies, doughnuts, and pastries. Open 24 hours which is super convenient when you have a craving for a baked good in the middle of the night.

Service was good and main aim was to get a selection of the aforementioned donuts. Got a box of 4 Bombs which are filled mini doughnuts with a choice of salted caramel, raspberry jam or nutella. Got a selection of all. The donuts with sprinkles also looked good so got a couple of those. Finally the Custard Berliner looked really good so got that too. The donuts were all pretty good. Some might be too sweet for some but worth seeking out.

I'm so lucky to only live around the corner from the Bakery on O'Connell so whenever I get a sweet tooth craving in the middle of the night... I know exactly where to go!Ā
4 STARS but lets make it 5 for being open 24/7!!! Im a big fan of the humble ol' Lamington and you know what they are light and fluffy like a nice chocolate covered pillow so I can never ever say NO! Also I just wish the pie pastry was the flakey sort of pastry, I think most peoples favourite too! Please consider the flake factor and bring the flake on!!! For breakfast I love nothing more than a HCT croissant with a nice hot latte...its gotta be hot too so I thank you for always ensuring my morning coffee is perfectly hot as requested! Make sure you get a milkshake with extra icecream and malt and sit by the window and people watch next time you have time to kill

Oh 10 out of 10 for that cheesecake cronut you guys make! OMG!!!!!!!! Decadent!!!!!

Me and friends come here at least bi-weekly and it's never disappointed us yet. The service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is always warm and inviting, albeit typically a little crowded. The baked goods are near the best I've had from many places and is exactly what one should hope for from such a popular place.
Greg Hodgkinson
9 out of 10 times this is a great bakery, good pies and deserts. If you are looking for a traditional pie floater which I was looking for today, a great dish from South Australia then avoid the one here. The pie was nice which made it ok but the soup was nothing more than mushy peas which was disappointing. A true pie floater comes with great pea and ham soup which this was far from that. Ā In saying that I will be back again as their pies and deserts and coffees are great, just not todays soup unfortunately. I really felt like some pea and ham soup today, not some mushy peas.
Jonny D
Probably one of the greatest bakerys in Adelaide! I have lost count of the many times I have had lunch or a late night meals here with friends! If your looking for a great bakery whether it be during the day or 2am then look no further! The coffee is beautiful and the service is always fantastic! Can't wait to go again!
Alis
Rang & ordered an apple pie to take to a friends home for dessert. Lucky I did order as they were so busy for Sunday lunch and it was the last one. The pie was enormous! Enough to feed at least 10 people and there were only 3 of us. Well, the pastry, filling of thick apple chunks and overall yummy-ness was amazing! Will definitely visit again!

Meet up with some friends last night for coffee and cake Bakery on O'Connell and my expectations were high as other reviewers I respect had rated it highly. After eating there myself I do not know why.

I did not like the dining area, the seating was terrible and there was nothing aesthetically pleasing at all.

The products were sub standard from my luke warm potato pie, to the lemon meringue pie that had NO lemon flavour at all.

The only thing that was good was the service. The staff were extremely pleasant and patient with the people making their selections. This saved the rating from being a 2.0.
JBeats
I love this place it is open 24/7 and sells many scrumptious baked goods that would satisfy any dietary requirement. The staff are always friendly

Best Bakery in Adelaide!! The service is always friendly and they are open 24/7! The custard Berliners are the best thing you will ever have šŸ˜

Love, love, love bakery on O'Connell. You can always rely on them to satisfy your craving at all hours of the day or night. Lately I can't go past their golden gay time cronnoli, it's is pure decadence and is so moorish. I have now resorted to sharing with Husbando when I get one. I also love their vanilla slice, the custard filling is so tasty. Beating was super tasty too and not heavy. Seating available or takeaway if you want. The hardest part is deciding what you want.

What an institution and late night/early morning saviour this bakery is! I have been here on many a late night, with a fabulous dress, high heels and a pie! Love it!

Been here a few times since they moved to their new location and the range is quite extensive! From rolls, sandwiches, juices, cakes, pastries, wraps, coffee, catering packs and so on!

I thought this time I would try the pie of the month, which was Mexican pulled pork, refried beans and corn, was really delicious, nice chipotle hint to it. Also, had the chicken parmi pie, quite nice as well. The pastry is pretty good and not too oily.

I am sure I will be heading back here soon, next time we are bar hopping in North Adelaide!

Thanks Team!

Finally made my way to this famous 24 hour bakery. The moment you walk in you'll become overwhelmed with the variety. There is SO.MUCH.CHOICE! The cabinets are filled with all types of baked treats - mostly sweet. Donuts, tarts, cupcakes, cannoli, slices, brownies...you name it they'll have it.Ā

I had been doing some stalking on Instagram and came across their Golden Gaytime Cannoli Donut ($6?), which appears to be a seasonal special. This pastry was really delicious. The filling in the middle was a fantastic consistency and was the perfect balance of sweet and creamy. The only gripe I had was with the chocolate on top; it would just shatter and fall off in pieces whenever I bit down. I would've preferred some sort of ganache that would stick to the pastry.

Other treats I've tried from here include the Butterfly Cupcake ($2.50), which had a surprise jam filling in the middle. The cupcake was wonderfully moist and the buttercream was lovely and fluffy.

I also liked the White Chocolate & Raspberry Muffin. It had a deliciously buttery crumble topping and the inside had a generous amount of raspberries which served well to balance out the sweetness.

Honestly I was genuinely surprised at the quality of the food here. The items all looked like your typical, generic, mass-produced baked goods that may have been sitting in the cabinet for god knows how long, but do not be fooled! Everything I've had tasted fresh and were all extremely yummy.

Loved this bakery! Open 24/7 for people with a sweet tooth and in need of something sweet over savoury. Came here after dinner with friends and the staff are all so lovely and accommodating to everyone in the long queues. I don't usually crave for something sweet but this place has everything someone who loves cakes, muffins, and all types of desserts. I would say the bakery is of good value but just a tad pricey. If you're ever in North Adelaide, this place is a must!

Mmmm tasty Nutella frappe.
Would recommend
Ps tasty.
Very unhealthy tho.
Creamy

Definitely Nutella and not nutino
Poppie
Best bakery cakes in Adelaide. Poppy has never been let down by Bakery on O'Connell. Always get cakes when I go and eat in or load up for takeaway. Looooooove the custard berlina, vanilla slice, chocolate donut and Nutella hearts šŸ˜šŸ˜ thumb up definitely worth an eat šŸ‘! Quality portion sizes, reasonable prices and great new fitout. Unlike disgraceful 'bakeries' like Vilis who's quality, ingredients, and portion sizes have decreased at a woefully rapid rate over the last few years. Head to Bakery on O'Connell and treat yourself

Come on. Iconic and you must try this place. Great service. Love the food. What else can you say. It's legendary. They have done a good job with the renos and by the way being back the buffalo wings pies please.
Audrey Yap
I love this place especially when you're craving something past midnight! The best pie I've tasted so far is the minced beef and potato pie with some BBQ sauce on the side. Perfectly cooked, and moist on the inside.
Laiken
I love that they're bringing it with the vegan baked goods!
They have quite a few options, pies, cakes and donuts etc.
I've only tried their chocolate donuts and they taste 100% like "normal" chocolate donuts.
They're also super huge!! 10/10 donut rating! They take me back to my childhood in the most delicious way.
Also, they're open 24/7!

We love the O'Connel st Bakery and stop regularly for a doughnut and a coffee, they have a shifting selection of filled doughnuts, from nutella, jam, salted caramel and peanut butter. Like all bakery's the earlier you get in the fresher the goods are however we haven't had a bad doughnut (if there is such a thing). The staff are always quick even when super busy and deal with the indecision that comes with staring at a cabinet full of goodies graciously.
Shrek3
Love their cronut cones as well as banana bread to take home. Ā A busy place but there are always seats. Ā It's so good that it opens for 24 hours. Ā For those who crave for something sweet, this is the place. Ā We also ordered the Turkish Bread with vegetarian feelings. Ā Yum!!!
Angela Li
Best yogurt ever had in Australia. It is so amazing and we don't want to have any other yogurt after this. Will miss it after back to Melbourne. Nice coffee too.
Chaitanya Sanon
A great place to have fine desserts. Well to be honest they aren't the best but they are pretty good especially when you are craving to have something late at night. It's open 24/7 and is brilliantly situated on o'connell street.

I haven't quite worked out the optimal time to eat here as the food can vary from superlative to average. Then again, given this place is open 24 hours, it's amazing that they manage to keep to that standard. I've enjoyed many cheese and chilli kranskys from here and service is always fast and efficient. An Adelaide icon
Cupcake
Been here twice now, both times the food and sweets were nice and decent value for money. Chicken parmigiana pie is good, and the vanilla slice is also nice. Nothing to rave about though- I think the pastry on the pies could be improved, but still a nice pie overall. I have also tried the pie floater here- which they are supposedly famous for. It is basically an upside down pie in a soup bowl, covered with thick mushy peas and topped with tomato sauce (optional). Cost around $8, which was pretty good value for money as it came in a decent sized bowl of mushy peas. It was tasty and filling. Overall a good bakery and worth a visit.
World Traveller
A great place for a quick brekkie or lunch or late night snack. The best thing is they are open 24/7. I ordered the banana bread combo which is a bargain for 7 dollars. The coffee was great and delivered to your table. It is clean and staff are friendly. I also tried the pies last week and had a good experience. They also have other cakes, pastries and platters for occasions.

Passionate Foodies
This place is never empty despite opening 24/7. Perfect place if you crave for something sweet and light.

Tried lots and lots of slices even took away some more. Must try is their Nutella Hearts. Their pies are so so.Ā

Bottomline ; Good quality, great service and fair value bakery.
Aszpad
Pastries are fantastic, fresh had the vanilla slice with a Nutella Cronut, the only let down was the coffee, which for a coffee lover such as ourselves is a big let down.
Laura
Bakery on O'Connell have a huge range of sweet and savoury products made fresh, with many available to be made to order. The staff are really friendly and the outlet is big, bright and fresh.
Jonty
I don't get the appeal of this place. It's 24 hours which is why college kids must love it. But in terms of service and quality, I don't rate it that highly. Don't see why I would ever return considering there are so many other better options in the area...
Angie-Marie Piantadosi
there's only one reason why I go to this place and only one reason why I will always go back and that is for the Nutella hearts! my absolute favorite!
D
Bakery on Oā€™Connell is an institution in Adelaide, an award winning 24/7 SA owned bakery and home of SAā€™s famed Pie Floater and creator of the Nutella Heart, a heart shaped donut that is full of nutella!. It was about time that I made my way there and try out our states most iconic food icon, the Pie Floater which is also recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon by the National Trust of Australia. Who knew?! Yes, thatā€™s what Wiki tells me anyway. Yeah yeah, itā€™s taken me this long to try out this famous food offering, but like they say, better late than never right?
Natasha Bell
Can't go wrong here! Usually pretty busy, at any hour. Nutella hearts, lemon heavens, banana caramels are my favourites. Service is good, the new location is spacious and decor is great for a bakery!

Great place and very friendly staff.. The lemon tart is one of the best I have had in years.. Fresh and great ingredients..

The new place is great.. Well lit and spacious.. Keep it going..

Fresh day and night. Recently visited Bakery on O'Connell about 1am, after attending a nearby function. The selection of pastries was vast, and all appeared to be freshly baked. When I entered with a couple of friends, the place had many customers spilling out. We each had a savoury pie, and I took one of their famous Nutella Hearts to go. Their pies were great, although my sweet treat was a little too heavy (but they are generous with the Nutella, so score points for that!). Certainly setting the bar for high quality food around the clock.
Chocolate Monster
Awesome! Loads of choice. Reasonably priced. Open 24hrs, for that midnight pie/sugar craving!!!!

Biggest donuts I have ever seen.
Veggie pasty was lovely.
Always busy which is a good sign. Love it.
Angella81
100% recommended. Best coffee in the city.

Villis vs O'Connell. Comparing Villis pies and O Connell. almost unfair to compare. 1am week days, some where to go for simple quick bite. not bad.
Foodieme
Love this cozy, pleasant bakery. Always just nibble on the pastries and hot chocolate, favourite spot on O'Connell!
Ymmas
You are the best!. Can't stay away from those yummy Donuts....... Love it! It is always busy, which is a reflection on the quality and diverse menu and friendly staff. Will definatly coming back all the time.

Yummm. The Nutella Hearts are to die for! Thank god it's open 24/7!
FoodChick
Anytime food. This is a great place for when you're craving tasty food at night time and nothing else sounds good.

I had their potato mince pie, absolutely delicious and hit the spot, and I tried their nutella heart doughnut which is every nutella lover's dream, so much sweetness and gooeness - a must try! And I had their apple tart - a little apple pie, so delicious and fresh!

This is the place to go for when you're feeling hungry and want some good food, I'll be back again to try their other pies.
Grag
Great, affordable (albeit guilty pleasure) food and friendly service.
Ur_with_zoe
I love this place. Im always coming back, great pies and really good chai lattes and nice vanilla slices there are so much types of desserts and pastries to choose from its a wonder they dont get annoyed at people wondering around trying to making up their minds. heaps of other drinks to choose from, friendly service, open all the time which is the best thing about it, if i had to say something negative the custard tarts which are a personal favourite needs improvement to be at the standard of all its other amazing stuff
Khookz
Great atmosphere. I finished work sometime in the "a.m" and I was looking for a good feed, so I rode down to 'the 24/7 bakery' about 1or 2am not expecting much at all. To my surprise, the huge bakery was jam packed, (not as packed as the delicious nutella hearts) and I procrastinated about 20 minutes from choosing something with my $5 in hand as the range of food, and atmosphere was so great!
Grace
Thank you for being open 24/7 and introducing me to Nutella Hearts! They are to die for and thanks to you I am now fat!! I can't get enough of them!
Andrew Lord
24/7 Heaven. It says on the sign in the street and it means what it says.

I had coffee and a vanilla slice worth killing for.

They have a pie of the month that is always worth a look - sometimes a bit odd, sometimes a " why didn't anyone think of this before?" moment.

The "O'Connell Cremes" - glazed doughnuts - are remarkably addictive.

Just love those chunky steak pies and their coffee
Jonny Stainher
I'm surprised that for a place being as iconic as it is for north Adelaide there isn't much about them on this site... Probably because its a great little eatery.. people are pretty quick when a restaurant does a bad service or has a bad day, to put their comments in, but fall silent when you have a place as great as this. What's even better... It's open 24 hrs, so since I am working those unappreciated hospitality hours, this is where I just had tonight's dinner... Screw maccas... Pie me up baby. The bakery's take on krispy kremes.are pretty damn tasty and their coffees are also very good.

Iā€™ve heard good things about the Bakery on Oā€™Connell. While looking for a lunch destination, I thought it was time to check it out.

I don't visit the O'Connell St Bakery often, but whenever I do, I will most likely end up walking away with one of these...

This month I turned the ripe old age of twenty-six and decided in celebration to undertake a one day food crawl of my favourite foods/places in Adelaide. It was a super jam packed day as I still did two training session and my weekly shopping and food prep! I have to say I was really obnoxiously full after all the eating, but it was great fun and I got to enjoy foods I don't get to eat on a regular basis. So here it is.. the 2013 birthday food crawl review :) To start my morning I had my usual pre workout food, almond butter (from Goodies and Grains in Central Market) and banana. The special addition for the birthday crawl however was two Welsh Cakes I had baked the day before. These are a childhood favourite of mine and I haven't had one since I was at my nan's in the UK at Christmas last year, so these are a little special as they remind me of family and home. They are kind of like a fried scone covered in sugar ;) Combined with the banana and almond butter they were even better! And
