LOVE!
BBC, steamed oysters and the flounder....drool...
When there are no words let the FOOD speak!
Fast turn over, late eating, best Chinese...there's a line outside the door for a reason!!!
Stopped by this busy restaurant when we came to Adelaide for holidays.. we couldn’t decide what to eat so we looked this place up on google and the rating was pretty good.. prices also seemed very decent.. we had the sweet and sour soup, drunken chicken and stewed pork belly.. the food here was decent and could definitely see myself as a regular here if I lived in Adelaide..
Really tasty and flavourfull duck! I highly recommend this place. Better get in early as the place is a bit crammed. Kinda disappointed that the bokchoy cost more that $10 a plate though.. .
Such a good humble meal here. Nothing fancy but for the price it's amazing. Book if you want to guarantee a seat, worth waiting if they're full. Service is always quick.
Fresh ingredients, freshly prepared at cheap price.
Shallot pancakes were the best i had anywhere in chinese restaurants.i loved their varieties.
awesome small place to get food late at night. Staff were also kind. Portion size were decent and loved the salt and pepper bean curds and vinegar ribs
Came across this place and so happy we did! The tea smoked duck is what brought us in and it was amazing!!! Packed with flavour, crispy and delicious. The ying chow fried rice and wonton soup were also great! Looking for a cheap delicious dinner with great service, this is your place! We’ll be back next time we’re in town :)
Always a go to for tasty late night eats. One of the few places in Adelaide open till late. Some of our favourite dishes are: shallot pancakes, red vinegar ribs, and bbc. Always a consistently good feed!
Amazing food.. all time favourites - Chinese red pepper chicken, green vegetables and the hot & sour seafood soup. Its one of the busy restaurants on Gouger Street.. a must try for all foodies!!
The e-shand chicken is just delicious. Salivating just thinking about it . The prawn noodles are just too good ..the wait to get a table at times is just annoying but it's worth the wait
The service is always prompt but unfriendly. Food is consistently good and arrives in no time. Recommend for a cheap and easy option. No frills but very reasonably priced and always open!
Good service, food came out very quickly. Food was tasty and well priced. We ordered the salt and pepper squid, egg plant clay pot and vinegar ribs- all dishes cooked consistently well although squid slightly over.
Lively, busy and great to be able to book a late table.
Ordered the Peking duck in advance which was thoroughly worth it - crispy skin and delicious.
A great vibe and worth a visit
How good is this place. So consistent, so honest and easily the best 'bang-for-buck' Chinese food in Adelaide. The duck is world class. Will be back again and again and again
Ying Chow at 114 Gouger Street, Adelaide has been a constant reliable Chinese restaurant whenever we've wanted to have a no frills good feed. We have never been disappointed and we know what to expect each time we visit.
Great food at reasonable prices. The duck was delicious. Love it. Feels close to Asian street food. Fast and tasty. Will return for sure. Staff busy but friendly.
I am not usually a chinese food fan but Ying Chow literally converted me. The place itself does not look like anything, wait until you start eating..! The food was fresh and tasty with a lot of texture. The service was also very good. Will come back!
Ordered the BBC (a bean mix in slightly spicy chutney which is a specialty there) as well as eshand beef. The flavours hit the spit as always. Only criticisms were some of the staff were slightly less friendly as I'd remembered (even though they weren't as busy as other times I've been there), and once upon a time I'd have called the places at this restaurant a bargain. By no means is it expensive, but I'd now refer to the prices as being reasonable.
Ying Chow at 114 Gouger Street, Adelaide has been a constant reliable Chinese restaurant whenever we've wanted to have a no frills good feed. We have never been disappointed and we know what to expect each time we visit. On this occasion we ordered the Ying Chow Premium Tea Smoked Duck, Shallot Pancakes, Deep Fried Shredded Beef and the BBC - Broad Beans, Bean Curd and Chinese Chutney.
We walked in to this place after finding it to be hugely popular with locals. It was not a disappointment as service was very quick. We had scallop stir fry and salt n pepper bean curd with boiled rice. Perhaps our choice was wrong as both dishes had no sauce and were too dry to have with rice. Otherwise dishes by itself were very delicious. It's good Chinese place but there are plenty of other better options in my view.
Ask for the oyster, salt and pepper white bait. Had dinner at my fav chinese rest in town, lucky, coz I remember to book.
Host Brian told me they had some big size oyster in, so apart from the standard order :smoke tea duck, onion pancakes, shredded beef and the must have springrolls, I also got a dozen of the steamed oyster for our table and man it come out looking spectacular and taste even better than it looks. This time we had a table of 6 so we got an extra dish and we went for the salt and pepper white bait. LOVED IT! so light and fluffy and crunchy and tasty... gotta remember to book for mothers day... I better hop to it. Happy dining.
Fresh tasty food and quick service. Great for a quick in and out meal. Busy. BYO very reasonable at $3 pp. enjoyed our meal. Loved the smoked tea duck!
This chinese restaurant opened til late, which is very convience to me. As sometimes I have a late dinner, I do not need to search around. Everytime I come here I must order Tea Smoked Duck, which have strong tea flavour with the dipping sauce. Their ginger spring onion chicken dish is also tasty, the chicken perfectly cooked.
Best place for a late night feed. Whenever I'm in Adelaide I find myself finishing my night having supper at this place. Great selection of food at affordable prices. The service is quick and the place looks clean. The staff seem to have a bad habit of forgetting one order each time I'm here. It doesn't really bother me by the time I remind them because I'm usually already full and I just ask them to cancel it. More money in my pocket! I recommend trying the dishes on the walls.
Now that's service!. Having a quiet drink at the Bar on Gouger across the road at 11.30pm on a chilly Monday night, my friend decides she's quite peckish. A quick phone call to Ying Chow and 5-10 minutes later problem solved, especially since the very friendly restaurant representative brought her order across the road to her, so she didn't have to move and we could keep enjoying our drinks! Aside from the always consistently great food, can't fault service like that!
Great food and cheap in price ribs and soups a must to try!!
My favourite Chinese cuisine in Adelaide.. There were times when I was eating here once a week... Many people complain about the service at Ying Chow, especially the manager. Tony is a nice guy if you joke around with him, he's just very shy. The young female girls are cheery and the best for customer service.
The food here is some of the best on Gouger. Broad beans with Chinese chutney (BBC), Salt and Pepper Bean Curd, Shallot Pancakes and E-shand Chicken are must tries if you have not been before, they are the staple dishes of Ying Chow. Prices are very competitive despite the smaller serves. This is a must try in Adelaide!
Fantastic food!!! Loved every mouthful :-)
Cheap and tasty. Tasty food, reasonably cheap compared to it's competitors. Be careful though, check your bill as they have on occassion overcharged myself and my friends.
Good as always. Great chinese restaurant, always delivers. Will return.
Likes it but.... Is it just me or have the serving sizes shrunk in the last few years? I'm usually loyal to East Taste across the street but will come here just for the E-shand dishes!
On the other hand, I can't believe there are still people complaining about the service in their reviews! It's rushed, they might forget that you're standing out the front waiting, sometimes it feels like they've thrown the plate on to your table but that is part of the experience. They're friendly enough if you show them a smile. If you want top service, go somewhere else and pay much more!
The service might b terrible but the food is amazingly good and tasty! They serve the best BBC on gouger st by far!
Don't skip this one!. Some of the best Chinese food in the CBD. Easy to walk straight past this place, like many of the better places in Adelaide. Amazing food at a good price.
Chinese Staple. This has so long been a place I go to for a good, quick(ish) Chinese meal without too much fuss and very reasonably priced. I thought it about time I reviewed it.
We (two of us) attended recently after a school function in December. They were busy, (the wait is never too long) but we found a table out front quickly (always pleasant if the weather is ok). We had three dishes (including the fried rice, but plus Asian greens) and a couple of glasses of white wine. The damage was $50. The food was good, as usual. Well worth adding to your list of sure things.
Would go again. Have been twice to Ying Chow albeit not in the last 6 months or so. Loved the food when we went and didn't notice any problems with service. Servings were good but a little smaller on the second visit so they are a bit inconsistent. We had shallot pancake, fried rice, red vinegar ribs (omg), e-shand chicken, crispy beef and the BBC. Some of the food I wouldn't normally have ordered but it turned out to be fantastic. I think this place is great if you like regular old Chinese food and want to try something a bit different without being too adventurous - the flavours are unusual but appealing to most tastebuds so its a great place to take guests and order for them.
Nice food. Best dim sims. Good reasonable price
Excellent fast service even when it's busy! Salt and pepper tofu is the best going around and the tea smoked duck is also to die for along with their steamed bread and bbc! However the chicken was a tad dry
Only one word for the tea smoked duck. AMAZING!
Good and cheap food. I love coming here for a late night Chinese food craving. They open til late and you never have to wait too long for food to come out. Food is standard, but at a cheap price how could you complain. Great place to catch up with friends at night for some hot tea and food to socialise with. Recommended.
So convenient. Always open when I need, never have to wait too long for a table (even for more than 4 people).
Love the food, especially for the price.
Great place to eat especially after finishing work late. Can always go there for a meal at 1am
Shallot pancakes and tea smoked duck were amazing. Awesome value
Good Food!. Always nice to be back to Ying Chow!
Food is fantastic!!. This place has the best chinese food in Adelaide. Due to its popularity the atmosphere can be busy and loud, the service can be scarce and there is usually a line up to get a table but.... there is a reason it is so busy.... because the food is THAT good. If you want a good feed for a good price and aren't in a rush then I can highly reccommend this place.
There's a very good reason this place is packed out with a queue out the door - the food is fantastic and cheap. I've had many awesome nights here with family, friends and dates. Always an awesome atmosphere and a stalwart restaurant of Gouger St. Here's s tip: shallot pancakes, tea-smoked duck, crispy-fried beef and the best of all BBC (Broad beans, Bean curd and Chinese chutney.
If you go on a weekend, make sure you book, otherwise you might be facing a wait, but don't worry, if you do have to wait it's normally not more than 10 minutes.
Don't bother ever booking. Great place if you want good food when everywhere else is closed.
When it's busy however - don't bother booking - you'll still have to wait with everyone else.
Corkage is $2 or $3 per person - so go grab your group a couple of bottles of wine from the shop across the road. Corkage is only for wine, not beer.
An oldie but a goodie.. BBC and shallot pancakes.. yum
An Adelaide institution, that's consistently great. Over the years the prices have stayed low and the quality high. Shallot pancakes are to die for!!
Great food and friendly atmosphere. No frills place was packed good sign.
The bonus is that Ying Chow is open late and you can get a decent feed late in the night. Red vinegar ribs are awesome but I cannot go past the beef brown bean and chicken mushroom hotpot. Don't expect too much in the way of service, just grab a waiter as he's walking past and ask for what u want.
Consistently good food. Sometimes the service can be slow but it's work the wait.
Super tasty food in a no-frills environment, reasonably priced and packed with surprising flavours. I highly recommend the shallot pancake and BBC (broad beans and tofu). Would go back in a flash to try more dishes next time I'm in Adelaide.
The most delicious Chinese food: cheap, fast and tasty. Favorites: steamed duck with salty sauce, BBC, red vinegar ribs, salt and pepper tofu. Get in early or make a booking, great for a beautiful feast before you hit up the markets for a chocolate and strawberry dip!
Clever little restaurant. It is tiresome reading reviews about Ying Chow consisting of complaints about staff manners and not being served in a silver service fashion. Ying Chow is not by any means high end dining and it does not cater for those who feel they are consistently deserving of such.
The food is always great and the menu refined almost to perfection. Serving sizes are on the small side however the price accommodates for those who wish to order several and sample the wide range of tastes Ying Chow offers.
Favourites are the red vinegar ribs, BBC, coriander chicken and shallot pancakes. You can never go wrong with these dishes.
Staff are hasty yet efficient and the regular attitudes and perks of the floor staff are endearing, a genuinely positive and enjoyable atmosphere. Always packed and expect to be moved around by staff upon arrival however a little resilience goes a long way and it is definitely worth it for fantastic affordable Chinese and commendable opening hours.
Great food as usual. Portions are getting smaller and prices are rising. I guess that's what happens when the money discovers a great student/good value venue!
Sometimes my colleagues and I would come in after work around midnight and always order T-duck and spicy jellyfish which is delicious! Despite the lack of friendly service, food there is nice!
Here's a tip - fried rice, BBC, spring chicken in a clay pot and Chinese tea ( bottomless pot). About $34 and more than enough for 2 people. Quality food at cheap prices. If your idea of a great restaurant is McDonalds and the farthest you've travelled from Adelaide is Victor Harbour, don't bother going here and then slag it off on urbanspoon because the service or decor weren't to your exacting standards. Odds are that the problem is with you not the venue.
Amazing food. I recommend the crocodile and snow peas as well as the shallot pancakes. Be warned... Like many authentic Chinese restaurants, the trip to the toilet is not for the faint hearted.
If there are other Chinese restaurants open in china town while you are there - you could give this one a miss.
Average, meh..
Good. Great food, BBC and crispy skin chicken never fails. Likes that it opens till late.
Small place so might need to wait sometimes and staff aren't the friendliest. Still, not complaining!
Great food, good service!. A fav dinner place with a group of friends, even when we book we usually wait 15 min. The place is always packed because the food is cheap, delicious and fast!
Despite the wait, the restaurant is well worth a visit. Sure, the place doesn’t look the best but it has a cult following for a reason.
Yummy chinese food!. The place is small, busy and noisy but the food makes up for it!! My favourite chinese restaurant.
Been here many times. Part of the charm of this place is that it reminds me of a busy restaurant in Asia because of all the hustle and bustle. My favourite dish is the salt and pepper eggplant which I get every time. Meals are cheap and come out quickly. But if you're looking for a restaurant where you can stay at for awhile to chat after your meal, don't, because you will get strong vibes that they want you to move on because of the sheer business. This is all fine because you come to expect if from this restaurant and the low prices compensate for it. Cannot go past here.
Consistently excellent. ALWAYS fantastic food, quick service - after eating here so many times we've never been disappointed. It's also always noisy but it doesn't matter because the food makes up for it!
Fairly good food, the BBC is a favourite.
Open late if you can get in to eat, but always check your bill, without fail the two dozen times we've been there they have always overcharged! Not wheelchair disabled friendly, unless you sit outside & don’t need to use their disabled toilet. (No room to get in there!) If you’re vegan make sure you tell them & they will adapt if they can. I didn’t ask the 1st time & then afterwards was told it has pork fat in the ingredients.
Just focus on the food.... The food is great especially at these prices and the place opens late which is always handy. It's not the best Chinese in Adelaide but it's worth going.
The service is appalling though but so appalling it's actually entertaining.
Street Food. Awesome food for the price. Don't expect silver service and linen on the table, expect a 'low cost feed' inbetween coming and going somewhere. We had four dishes, a serve of rice and 1/2 caraf of Rose for $40...Outstanding!
Noisy and bloody nice. Brilliant food fast. Go the duck, BBC and ribs. Don't go for a romantic meal, its noisy.
WOW. What an excellent place to eat. I have been going to Ying Chow for over 6 years and the quality of the food is remarkable all the way. The clay pots are always a big favorite. Would recommend to anyone.
Service. Many people complaint about the service, prices, portions.. the fact that they stay open till 1am 7 days a week, i think thats a great service already. Adelaide should have more places like this. people who complaint, what have they done for Adelaide people? in the food industry wise? would you stay open till 1am 7 days a week, 365 days a year? i guess not.
foods are not the best, but not bad. staffs are friendly and fast. being able to have a reasonable meal after 10pm in Adelaide, not much.
if someone is looking for a fine dinning experience, please dont come here. one should understand what is Ying Chow offering, fine dinning is not it.
Nice food. Quick service and the food is adequate.
Great food, terrible service!! The place is always busy and hectic, and they keep cramming more in. We made a booking for ten people but they lost it. Luckily they had a table for us. The food always comes out fairly randomly, not really with the structure of fine dining. But we're not here for fine dining we are here for the food!! LOVE IT!! my absolute fav is the bbc (beans and bean curd). S + P squid also a fav.
YUM!. The service? Not so good.
The staff are either talking to each other, eating or talking on their mobiles most of the time.
But the food? GREAT!
If you want a busy, buzzing, crowded place to eat, go there.
But i recommend you take it away and enjoy it in a nicer venue.
Crocodile!!!. Amazing quick food....i recommend the crocodile and snow peas!!
Went here for a late night feed. Not sure the red wine ribs were the right thing but the E Shand Chicken was really good. Salt and pepper squid was good too. Tasted like it was cooked in donut batter. Delish!!!! Definitely recommend it as a late night post grog meal supply.
Fun. Always hectic, book if you can or if you need to eat early unless you want a wait. The food is usually truly great. Every now and then it will be hit and miss - but usually only on a single dish, never across all dishes. And it's rare that its hit and miss. The service is sensationally randon - not in getting service, you'll get that - just in the order you get it. One dish or 5 can arrive at the same time....order is not important. This is Chinese fast food and it leaves Western fast food for dead. Highly recommended. Also, I should note, it is generally well prices BUT those prices are starting to go up at a rate that is quickly approaching the point where the casual meal option will be removed. That's a shame. We hit Ying Chow a good number of times each year. If the pricing goes up much more it will be relegated to a handful of visits at best. They are cheap an dcheerful - and forget that at their peril.
I'm a convert to the world of Yingers. After recent late night dumpling spree's during a holiday break to Melbourne we were sitting on the couch craving good Chinese Food. It was 10.30pm so all the local Chinese take aways were long shut. I decided to make the treck into the CBD for some Ying Chow goodness.
I arrived at 11pm and ordered. The place was still pumping. After placing my order for take away it took about 25 mins to come out - which was fine - as they were BUSY. As I left at 11.30 pm with my big white plastic bag filled with my little treasures they were still setting up new large tables for groups of guests just arriving. More like Melbourne than Adelaide. While the rest of Adelaide is asleep this place just keeps pumping out good food to happy and hungry punters. At home we began our feast at roughly midnight. It was mouth watering lick smackingingly good.
We will be back.... and those red vinegar ribs are awesome to eat while watching bad tv
Amazing food, poor service. Don't go to this place expecting the A team of waiters. Your going to get crude service however the food is amazing! Great selection of main dishes and entree's. All favourites are there... chicken, beef and pork in satay sauces. We dabbled in the Venison with shallots and leeks and it was amazing! The chicken satay skewers were probably the best I have ever had.
Yinh Chow is always YUM. Ying Chow is always busy and for god reason - the food here is amazing. I only wish we could get Chinese food like this in the UK.... Shallot Pancakes are a MUST!
Ignore the haters, this place rocks.. Yes, it is loud, busy, crowded, raucous, minimally furnished, etc. So what? Ying Chow doesn't pretend to be something that it is not. It has great food with a stunning "enjoyment per dollar" figure -- I've been to restaurants costing five times as much that have been far less enjoyable.
The place is packed because people love it. It could be said that they are a victim of their own success but there are many restauranteurs who would kill to be in that position. How many restaurants do you find where there can be a queue for a table after midnight!? Take a bottle of wine and some good friends, load up on dishes and you'll almost certainly have a great time. If you're going to be a princess about waiting a few minutes, the seating, decoration and noise, go somewhere else.
It is true that my friends and I stick to a selection of several favourite dishes -- there are some other items on the menu which I don't like. If you just wandered in off the street and randomly picked a few things it is quite possible that you might be unlucky and end up with stuff that doesn't float your boat. Don't let it put you off, there are some really great things in there.
Best Chinese. Ask to TONY order the pancake shallots, black bean beef and fried rice. You can even try the squid its my favourite Chinese Restaurant in Adelaide!
Do yourself a favor and order the BBC and the long bean with chilli and garlic. Be warned however that this restaurant is incredibly addictive and will definitely need a booking if you don't want to join the cue outside.
Cheap and served with that rushed demeanour so typical of Asian restaurants, Ying Chow’s menu lists the essentials (Shanghai Noodles, $11.50 and Fried Rice, $7.50) alongside some alluring oddities: Stir Fry Crocodile ($17.80), Sizzling Venison ($16.80), and Claypots ($10.50-15.50) that Ying Chow claims are from the mysteriously-absent-from-geography-books E-Shand village.
The service – best described as a hit and miss – occasionally amazing, yet infrequently forgettable. Either way – I come for Chinese comfort food at a cheap price – and that’s exactly what you’ll get!
... the kind of deliciousness that makes you squeel when you think about the left overs that you have in that tiny container in the fridge for lunch tomorrow?! -
Always good, never disappoints. BBC is still one of my favorites. Ideal to pre book ahead as very busy. It's a quick and fast type of place. The interior is very simple and dated but because the meals are so good you certainly won't care.
Had a lovely dinner here last night! We ordered the dumpling soup which was incredible (highly recommend), mixed veggies, roast duck and the flounder. Everything was excellent! The fish took a bit longer to come out but definitely worth the wait!
Late night dinners @yingchowchineserestaurant pictured here are some of my favourites go-to dishes. It’s a casual and friendly place with tasty Chinese food and decent sized portions. The staff are super friendly and menu prices vary which is good because you could name this place as either a “cheap eats” or ya regular Chinese restaurant if that makes any sense. I always opt for this place when I’m feeling like wholesome Asian food or it’s late & haven’t had dinner yet!

Crispy beef is very tasty. Sticky pork taste like version of Humba in the Philippines. Deep fried prawn is nothing special.
Excellent service and meals. I checked Google reviews and went by recommendation, and wasn't disappointed. I highly recommend 👌
Arrived to Adelaide from long drive. We had no reservations but they tried to accomodate us. We just needed to wait for 5 mins outside and then we got the table. The taste of the food was light and great. It’s on my taste! I love it. The service was amazing as well. Very recommended!
