Review Pondok Daun - Adelaide

Miss J
Little shop in the heart of the city serving authentic Indonesian food at affordable prices. Grilled beef ribs were so tender and falls off the bones. The Sambal is no joke, the spice will make you sweat even from just a tiny pinch. But it's the real deal. Mee goreng was really tasty. Decent sized portion too. Got a double yolk, yay! And the portion seem to have shrunk over time for the Batagor, but the sauce is really good though. Got more pricey, snifff... Rendang portion seems bit small as well in comparison to the rice.. Kangkung belacan wasn't spicy and was a good vege dish. Wonton Noodle soup was tasty with big juicy wontons. Heartwarming. Very quick service for the food.

This place has some of the best Indonesian Food in Adelaide. Their signature dish is the deep fried Tilapia Fish and the sambal is spicy, pungent and just delicious go check them out two locations City & Parkside!!!

This place was recommended by a friend of mine. And I have to agree, this place offers really good food. The service is pretty quick and the value isn't that bad. It's a shame I wasn't able to try more of the other dishes. I look forward on trying the rest of the food on their menu.

From main dish i have tried there beef ribs, whole fried tilapia and fried chicken.. all comes with rice, chickhen stock and a special sauce.. Whole fried tilapia is really tasty and large in size. Beef grill ribs is also tasty.. was a bit dry at time.. i was expecting it to be a bit juicy.. Fried chicken was not good at all.. the chicken did not taste fresh and also it was dry.. On finger food i have tried samosa.. it was okay.. not uniqur in taste not bad.. Overalll food here is good if you like indo malay flavor.. there sauce is really hot that comes with the chicken and beef.. 🔥

Was a bit skeptical when I walked in this place. Walking in and smelling the malay/indo aroma, this place is reminiscent of a warung! After savoring the food, I was immediately taken back into Asia. Fantastic value for money & authencity! Large portions as well! This is definitely an awesome place to go if you’re looking to remember Bali/ Kuala Lumpur!

We were after something different for dinner instead of Thai, Viet or Chinese and happened to stumble across this great Indonesian restaurant. Friendly service and huge portion sizes. The beef rendang was SO good that we even got another serve. The satay was also delicious so we got another serve of those also - whoops...

Authentic tasting Indonesian restaurant. Excellent service, fast and efficient, clean. Delicious food. Will definitely be back. Oh, forgot to take a photo of the satay sticks before we got stuck in, they were so good!

5 star rated for food!! The staff are friendly and take their time to listen to you or help with suggestions to get what you really want. I have been there twice and the experiences as been great. Would return for sure. Food prep didn’t take too long even when crowded. They serve all halal food, so it is a Muslim friendly Indonesian restaurant. You get filtered drinking water for free. If you are a spicy food lover ask them to add spicy sauce on fried Tilapia and you get a huge exploding spicy dish made for you. Love this place, the food and the people. Highly recommend place in the center of the city. I wish they open till late and weekends.

One of my favourite eateries in Adelaide. Most Asian restaurants here seem to serve sugary sludge but this place is the real deal. Authentic flavours for a good price. The staff are very welcoming too.

Awesome authentic Indo food ! Fast service. Good price point. Can't complain at all. Will be back when I feel like a taste of my childhood again.

Simply delicious!! Four of us had dinner Saturday night and the food was so lovely there was nothing I didn't like. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and an excellent location. I can't wait to come back!!

By far the best Indonesian food in Adelaide. Malaysia and Indonesia has heaps of similarities in terms of food, language, culture, tradition and heritage. Food was FANTASTIC and it makes me feel sooo much at home!

Incredible food! Great atmosphere and plenty of high chairs. The food came so fast! Really good prices too.

Many yummy food choice. We ordered 3 mains and all are superb. Would be back to try more dishes for sure. Price are reasonable. Please keep up the good work chefs and owner of Pondok Daun. The staffs there are also very friendly. Big thumbs up guys.

Love the sambal keropok gado gado and friend prawns. Only grouse is that it is slightly sweeter than normal. And that the menu is rather limited.

Mine and my Hubby's FAVOURITE restaurant! It's delicious and very affordable! No matter how many times we come, the food and taste is always consistent. Love it

This little Indonesian place in Currie Street probably doesn't look much from the outside. And when you get inside it's fairly utilitarian and even a bit cold. But the warmth of the staff and the welcome more than makes up for it.

The menu is solidly Indonesian and seems totally authentic. And most importantly, it's utterly delicious.

I had an entree of chicken satays (pictured) that were juicy skewers covered in a generous coating of fantastic peanut sauce that was worth licking the plate for.

My wife had the fried chicken that came with rice, soup and a platter full of garnishes and nibbly things.

We had lunch with drinks and got out for about $18 each which was a bargain. Recommended!

Best Indonesian restaurant I’ve been to, my Indonesian Aunty introduced me to it and she loves it as well.

The grilled beef ribs are my favorite go-to meal on the menu. There’s no possible way you can fault them, in taste, serving size, or price.
As it’s authentic Indonesian, you should be aware that the chilli sauce provided is powerful stuff. Treat with respect!

Hands down my favourite go-to restaurant when I’m on this side of the city! The workers are so friendly and the service is consistently fast and of top quality despite how busy it can get during the lunch rush.
The serving sizes are so generous, especially for what you pay for (perfect for uni students) and the food never disappoints. Absolutely recommend giving this place a shot! :)

I think this is the only authentic indonesian restaurant in adelaide as the other are selling other cuisine as well. We take away many food from here and mostly are quite good (forgot to take pic on the take aways), i like their opor as it was thick and yummy, the pempek was not that good as they use fish ball in it which is not common, chicken skewer was yummy, as well as their fried chicken. Service was very friendly and attentive. Definitely will go back when im back @adelaide.

I forgot to take pic for this review ... Overall, the food is great, reasonable price and tasty. We ordered chicken kwetiau, kangkung belachan, chicken balado, pempek, and tahu Tempe goreng, total under $50. Shared for 2 people, still got leftover to take home. This is a must check out for cheap eats. Ambiance and service is good.

One of my favourite places to eat in the city. Food is of a good quality, along with being fast and cheap. I recommend the chicken char kway teow.

Discovered this place when I started my new job a few doors down. Great food, great prices, fast service, wonderful friendly staff. Repeat this - EVERY time I go. Cannot fault this place. A+++

Inexpensive Indonesian restaurant in the CBD. Service is polite and friendly. Best dishes were the beef rendang and the chicken satay sticks.
NowayJose
Affordable, yummy and big serving. Great and friendly service. Must try, chicken satay, fried tilapia and nasi goreng. Will come back for sure.

Good homemade Indonesian food at reasonable prices. The sambal meehoon is my fav! Polite staff and clean restaurant.. definitely will be back

Yummy!!!
This is the only one thing that comes up to my mind. Food is just so awesome and authentic. Its beyond words. It was our (me and Jayakesh Venu ) daily lunch time preferred restaurant during our business visit in Adelaide. Lamb curry with rice is just so perfect with meat so succulent and well cooked with right spices. Another dish worth trying is Tilapia fish with rice.
DLe-cious Eats
Cute little restaurant. Great value for money. Food did not take too long to come out. I mean $12.80 got me 6 king prawns with rice and soup. Also tried an Indonesian traditional dish which was the slow cooked sweet beef. Just a word of warning: the balado packs a LOT of heat. I also found the avocado smoothie rather underwhelming..it tasted strongly of really artificial chocolate syrup and was lacking avocado which was probably diluted with ice/water.

I'm a filipino, and the food here tasted as good and similarly as filipino the distinction being that indonesian food has more of the hot🌶chillies (sambal). I ordered the fried noodles, my wife the tilapia fish and my son the fried chicken. All were beyond satisfied with the food. The proportions were such that we could not even finish them despite sharing. Definitely will explore and conquer more on what's on the menu. 👌

Our favourite Indonesian restaurant in Adelaide! Foods were full of flavour, very fast service, friendly staffs, and so affordable. My 7 yo loves the Fried Chicken with Rice. He can finish that big serving himself. I have tried different dishes, and my favourites were the Grilled Chicken and Nasi Goreng.

My friends and I frequently dine here on Saturdays. The service here is great. Their food is consistently good and their sambal sauce is amazing. I highly recommend their Ayam Penyet!

This place happens to be right near my friend's bus stop so whenever I went to her place I would stand near it, smelling the delicious smells. I looked at the menu, thought it great, and later returned with a collection of friends. I wasn't disappointed! Very reasonable prices for very filling food. Absolutely amazing! Can't recommend enough.

Had a quick dinner with a friend before a show. Service was super fast and the food was delicious! This will become a regular place for lunch with work colleagues from now on.

This is my go to for feel good food at lunchtime. Always busy but very quick service. I only have half an hour for lunch and can eat in and have time to spare. Great menu options, cheap food and totally delicious. Love this place.

This restaurant is right acrossy office so it's handy to get a quick takeout. I've been there a frw times and have enjoyed the food so far. Pretty cheap - that's why it's my go to lunch. Still have a lot on the menu to try - and yes I'm planning to try as much as I can from the menu they have. Definitely recommended and might take some friends too.

Based on cousin reference we came to this place. It is an authentic indonesian restaurant. Hmm kinda miss indonesian food, dunno if it the same that i found in bali. We ordered grilled beef ribs, beef rendang, cat fish. All served with rice. Beef ribs was awesome, tender and taste differently to grilled meat that I usually had, taste a bit sweet. Beef rendang was killa, slow braised cooked made the beef tender and rich of flavour. For the cat fish, haha this one of a kind. I never found a fish like this in oz. Its crispy but soft inside..i like it very much. We also had fried tempeh and tofu, and fried wonton. All food are beautiful. Definitely will come back. Good and fast service, affordable price.

Staff very friendly, food more Han reasonably priced and delicious. This was the first time I'd been here, and it's safe to say I will be back.

This gem of Currie St should not be missed as it serves one of the most delicious and appetizing meals that any homesick Malaysian, Singaporean or Indonesian can feel nostalgia with. The staff here are as warm as the spring sunshine and their service is beyond expectations.Their food choices range from rice and meats to noodles and also a variety of desserts and drinks that would catch the eyes and taste buds of any food enthusiast. I am a vegetarian and I highly recommend their Spicy tofu as well as their Capcay goreng (vegetable soup) as well as their Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) and Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) (based on my girlfriend's and best friend's opinions of course). Do drop by whenever you are close and taste the delicacies that south east Asia have to offer!

Cannot fault this place for its food and price! Have come back here multiple times after being recommended by an Indonesian friend and it's never been a hit and miss. The deliciousness of the food is always consistent especially for the price you pay.

Pondok Daun will always be a gem when it comes to Indonesian/Malaysian food in the Adelaide CBD.

UPDATE: Last time I reviewed this place, I was hesitant to give it full stars so it sat at a 4. Since then, I have truly and honestly haven't found any Indonesian food that has surpassed the quality and flavours Pondok Daun dishes up. In fact it's really difficult to find good food at such a cheap price, so I'd definitely be calling PD a hidden-gem for sure!

Cute little cafe with delicious, authentic Indonesian cuisine. Absolutely loved the fish dumplings!
Great friendly staff and service. Will be back again soon!

I loved the Char Kway Teow, but my partner wasn't impressed by the coconut rice. My dish could be oily in general opinion but definitely full of flavour. The price is very competitive and welcomed by students.

Cafe version of Indonesian Food in the heart of the city. The food are good for the price, we had the ox tail soup and it was very tasty, the fried chicken with rice is nice, I was hoping that the rice is chicken rice. The crispy whole catfish is value for money at around 10 dollars, we were curious where the catfish comes from and was told not sure. The decor is simple and easy, for a quick bites, I would recommend this place.

After something a little bit different in the centre of the city but not wanting to break the bank? You could try the cheap and cheerful authentic Indonesian Pondok Daun on Currie Street, sister restaurant to Pondok Bali on Pulteney Strret. The cheap and tasty food does the talking here so look past the basic and simple decor, or lack thereof, and treat them tastebuds to some Asian spices and favourites.

Staff was friendly. Had the spicy prawn paste fried rice and ayam penyat taken away. Yummy and spicy enough though a little oily (but Indonesian food is usually oily and spicy). Will be back again to try others.

My partner and I had awesome food at this restaurant. The pricing was reasonable with great service. We enjoyed yummy durian dessert as well. Will definitely be back.

Lovely service at this unassumingly efficient restaurant. Classic Indonesian food with excellent prices. The quality and quantity at these prices are unbelievable. Recommended for university students who don't want to buy lunch and dinner both on busy days.
Only one meal from here would suffice.

Sigit I would say is the loveliest waiter I have met! My husband and I are regulars here. We order a range of food. If you want authentic amazing Indonesian food here is the place to go. Even though they get very busy sometimes the staff come out of there way to assist you with menu items. We have been to Bali numerous times and the food is even better at Pondok Daun! 11/10 for food and service :)

As you may or may not know, we were due to go to Bali and didn't quite make it there no thanks to the volcano. Whyyyy, why you must erupt *sad face*. There was a silver lining in the end but no, we didn't make it to Bali. For now, I'll just have to find Indonesian food here. We came across Pondok Daun right before we were supposed to leave for Bali and found many dishes close to home for me. How did the meals fare? Pretty good.

We had dinner here a while ago. The food was amazing and cheap! We had a dish with fried fish and a bowl of noodles. Service was polite too! Will return.

What a wonderful little find. I noticed this whilst waiting for the bus on currie street. The place is simple but welcoming. You can get your own cutlery if you prefer chopsticks or knives and fork. We ordered the Indonesian dim sims for starters which are unusual but nice and also sate which was delicious. Lunch can be bought for under $10. Will definitely be back.
But I'm Hungry Now
I was looking forward to trying some beautiful Indonesian inspired dishes. Sadly, the food here was quite average. I had the spicy seafood stir fry with flat rice noodles. While the sauce packed a lot of flavour, the quality and amount of seafood was lacking. I also had a satay dumpling dish as an entree which was a letdown. The dumplings were cut into pieces and served with quartered potato which was quite odd. There was barely any sauce and it didn't taste like satay sauce at all (it was bland). The hot ginger drink, however was lovely - sweet, spicy and hot.

Great Foods and Great service!!!. Great food, Student price, friendly service, will definitely come back to Pondok Daun Restaurant. I love Indonesian food!🙋🏻❤️🇮🇩

Tucked into an historic shopfront, flanked by a subterranean dating agency and an empty shopfront full of teddy bears, is the shiny new Pondoc Daun restaurant, sister to Pondoc Bali on Pulteney Street. And on this Friday lunchtime, it is pumping. Ordering and payment is done at the counter. A cutlery station is on the way back to your table. First to arrive is my Hot Ginger Drink ($2). It is spicier than I had expected (nice!) and sweet, but not overwhelmingly so...

With Indonesia’s close proximity to Australia, I’m quite surprised there are only a handful of Indonesian eateries in Adelaide. Pondok Daun is the latest to open its doors and offer this type of cuisine, and judging by the ethnicity of it’s clientele, it’s almost safe to say that the food is authentic. Today, I once again caught up with Louise from Willunga Wino , and we both ventured into this place to see how good the food was. The menu can be broken down into toasts, entrees, soups, grilled dishes, fried dishes, rice, noodles, dessert and exotic drinks. A lot of the dishes look familiar from my visits to other Indonesian eateries, however, others are particularly unique.
