Review Hains & Co - Adelaide

Jarrad Horwood
I had this establishment in my sights for one reason, the cigars. I got there and they unveiled a small cabinet of offerings. The selection was ok and my selection went down just fine, however the actual offering was 10 fold. It took me buying one to smoke with some of their fine whiskey before returning for round two to be shown the larger cabinet, could be a sales tactic, could also be part of the experience. I went on to indulge in a further cigar that was from the second offering that made me purchase 3 great cigars for home. If you are heading here for cigars & like me find not too much in the way of information on what to expect then I have two tips, ask them to show you both cabinets right away, and make sure to take some of these offerings home like a good little pirate. I will be back.

This place has Street Atmosphere like your in an quite allyway in Melbourne, brilliant gin, cigars, whiskey, and my favourite rum. This is a quirky pub, spacious and a great set out. A must stop in for a drink in CBD SA, just 1min walk from Rundle mall.

Funky bar, electric energy and eclectic venue packing a punch with expertly blended cocktails. Super patient bar staff as we ended up here at the end of a bar crawl on a Sunday evening. Cool space and we’ll be back!

Had brilliant tommys margs and wonderful house rum. Markus is the host and absolutely made us feel warm and welcome. We loved the gin lane and after dark sessions. Killer vibe, highly recommend it.

Nice bar in Adelaide with a great selection of gins and habanos! Can get busy, so sometimes getting a drink can take a long time but nevertheless it is a great spot!

One of my favourite bars as the staff are always great. Excellent gin selection.

Fun place for fun. The cigar is good. Whiskey fly … can’t remember the name, goo too. Nice experience.

I walked into this place by accident - just wanted a drink and a bit of warmth. The heater was on and my husband got us beautiful Japanese whiskey and cigars. It was interesting experience and high quality stuff they have!

So the bartender there obviously has a prejudice against other races. He is shaved head and has a beard, the rudest bar tender I have come across. Soo rude it’s almost unbelievable, we ordered our drinks then corrected our order he was beyond frustrated this was even before he made them. He then went on to make drinks in an aggressive manor. I understand bar tenders get busy as I have been a bartender myself but not in my wildest dreams would I treat people in this manner. What a c**t!!!

Hains and Co is right at the top of my list when a drink is in order. The staff are always great - happy to point you in a direction if you are undecided, they always have something new to try and there is always a great atmosphere.

I was on holiday with 5 friends and we chose to spend our last day of the holiday at Hains & Co. A member of our party ordered a cigar and realized the cigar was dry and not up to standard. When I went to notify an employee and get another cigar, I was treated very rudely by an employee named Brent. As he tried to justify that nothing was wrong with the cigar he placed his lips on it, smoked it, then tried to give it back. I did not accept it back due to his lips being placed on it. Once we told him this, he then broke it into 4 pieces and put it in the trash. We asked for a replacement because regardless of the outcome it was still our product and didn't receive one then he proceeded to treat our party with disrespect. We lost the cigar and the money we paid for the cigar. I couldn't believe the poor customer service we received...HORRIBLE!!...Never will go there or recommend again! If I could give a ZERO rating I would!!!

Loved it. Totally classy with a really nice (and reasonably diverse) clientele. Would have been 5 stars but there was quite a wait at the bar -- if only they might add an extra bartender for their busiest time (we were there at around 9pm on a Saturday night). Other that that, it is a near-faultless establishment that is definitely worth your time.

This nautical-themed bar is tucked into the same Adelaide laneway as the 24-hour Original Pancake Kitchen (important if you’re out after 2am, and craving a maple syrup-slathered stack of pancakes).

With so many maritime nods, Hains and Co will make you question whether you’ve unknowingly come aboard a boat. Especially given rum and gin are the drinks of choice here. But there’s also a decent range of other spirits, wine and beer – the latter you order in the sizes of dingy, tanker and tall ship (in case there aren’t enough nautical wink-nudges).

Naturally, the big kahuna-sized bar opens out onto the front deck, so us drunken sailors outside can sit and watch some serious cocktail-making in action. I visited on a winter’s night, and while there’s café blinds and heaters doing a fine job taking on the cold, you don’t need to be a cocktail scientist to see how this inside-outside bar will go off in summer.

What an amazing little bar! Yah for really good bar staff! Such interesting cocktails and beers. Sitting out front on a barmy night it is just perfect! This wonderful bar is such a great example of the new bar scene in Adelaide.

You would never know that Hains & Co was here - tucked between the gaudy Penang Restaurant and the dodgy Pancake Kitchen in Gilbert Place. Looking from afar you wouldn't think much of it, but step closer and you'd be blown away by the ship like interior, cosy booths and frames on the walls. Just shows how important ambiance and atmosphere is - it can make a place memorable.

Didn't get any food there (there is a nice looking bar food menu), but there is an extensive drinks list from wine to beer, from homebrew to hard liquor. I got the Applelachian cocktail which was to die for - straight bourbon mixed with home cooked apple puree, lemon juice and a stick of vanilla. Mmm mmm.

Maybe be prepared to fish out a bit from your wallet for the drinks, but they are worth it. Swing by after work on a Friday afternoon to unwind and have a good time.

If you're into Gin this place is heaven in the west end of Adelaide. Super knowledgeable staff, great garnishes and an obvious passion for drinks, this bar brings fun and boisterous vibes to your Friday night drinks. Yaarrr

This is simply the best bar in Adelaide, hands-down. Clever Little Tailor comes close, but everything considered it's a distant second. This is up there with The Baxter Inn in Sydney and Black Pearl in Melbourne.

Absolute gem in the heart of the city. This place is cozy and welcoming with beautiful decor and an amazing bar!

You feel like you are on a wooden sail boat taking you somewhere exotic! They have an amazing selection of rums and gins that are paired with specialty tonics to match the flavour palate of each gin.

They also have a great selection of cigars to choose from.

The best way to describe Hains and Co. is 'attention to detail' everything has been beautifully thought out and put together.

Marcus and the other lovely staff will make you feel welcome and are great company if you are going here solo.

I would go as far as to say this is the best small bar in Adelaide!

Thank you for bringing the quality of bars in this city up a notch!
Located on Gilbert St, Hains and Co specialise in rum and gin and also sell cigars. The nautically themed bar opens both into the inside and the outside sitting area. I had the penicillin cocktail which was a sweet citrus drink that was doused with Laphroaig Whisky giving it a smokey/peaty flavour. Great cocktail and definitely recommend it. We didn't try any food. But drinks and atmosphere wise I really liked the bar.

It was pirate night when we went and what a night! Pirates serving you warm spiced rum- what more could you want? Generous serves of well chosen cold meats and cheeses, that's what! And that's what you get. There are so many things to rave about, the ship-worthy decor, the decidedly geeky but cool music (think 80's and 90's pop with a twist), the good selection of wine, beer, rum, cocktails, gin and cigars, and the attention to small details (eg. brown, paper wrapped parcels with red string of toasty bread for your platters). This whole place screams of love and warmth. Free face painting and eye patches? Hains and co. You've overdone yourself! L. O. V. E.

I'm an absolute sucker for kitschy nautical themed drinking establishments, so Hains and Co was a delight. The bar staff was very friendly. I had merely asked about their tap-drawn Dark and Stormy when a sample was promptly prepared for me. It was very, very good. I enjoyed three and will have more in the future. Whether it is your destination or a stop on the way to your destination, it's well worth it. Be advised that a round of drinks might cost a bit.

If you're looking for true service then there's no where better than Hains & Co... great staff, impressive cocktails and a great looking space to boot. Can get a little full on a Friday or Saturday night in winter.

Point of Difference: they have a cigar menu and handy bag hooks under the tables for the ladies! Oh, and did we mention that large range of Gin and Rum!
Verdict:
Mirko: has been before and likes it - 8/10
Amanda: first time visiting, likes it and would return - 8/10
Our final say - Get on Board!

Finally a venue who stocks fine rums in Adelaide. It's taken a long time for Radelaide to catch up with what's been going on interstate for a decade . Hains & Co have got it right , great cocktails , a booty full of world class rums and the polite & helpful attitude to go with it. If you haven't been there yet I suggest you do ASAP

Wandering after TDU and stumbled on this bar. Brilliant. Glass bottom tankards for beer - great - that's all

Secret gem in Adelaide. Having come from Melbourne to live back home recently, I have been looking for a local hang out in Adelaide to call my own. I have found it at Hains & Co. I went at 5pm, and I have to say, its the perfect day bar. I liken it to Chuckle Park, in Melbourne, and lo and behold I find out Marcus Motteram is the owner of both. He is Mr Hospitality personified, I noticed him talking to all the patrons when I was there. Hains & Co has a great atmosphere because of the attention to detail put into the place. The out door bar area is very unique, with bartenders having full street lane way access and views. The Southside I ordered was spot on, and the cheese platter was very satisfying (the handmade fig roll with the cheese was sensational, as was the truffle cheese...). Cheeses sourced from Say Cheese.... I suspect this won't be my secret for very long.

The newest bar to open up in Adelaide is Hains & Co, which is located on Gilbert Place, right in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. The house specialties at Hains & Co are rum and gin, so a few Gin and Tonics were required to start the night off. The food menu can be separated into 4 items; cheeses, cured meats, salmon and scallops.
