Review E For Ethel - Adelaide

William Niccolo
E for excellent! Hidden cafe through boom gates on Melbourne street. We parked on Dunn St and crossed over. Good homemade food, nice coffee and good service. There was an acoustic guitarist playing inside mid afternoon (I’m not sure if this was once off due to Fringe or a regular show) with smooth tunes to eat to.

I’m normally a pancake lover for brunch. But I couldn’t pass up the lemon curd French toast! The flavor it fantastic!! I love the location. I felt like a true Adelaide local! On my top 5 brunch places in Adelaide for sure!!!

A great coffee for my Friday! Good temperature when served, foamy forth, and the strong flavour (but not burnt) from quality beans.

Wonderful artwork and design, the cafe is immaculate in terms of cleanliness, the price is very reasonable, the staff are friendly and polite; there is even a display of locally made products and artwork for sale. Everything is perfect, except for the most important thing about a cafe... The food and coffee. The coffee unfortunately was very weak, as for the food it was very bland, with a distinct lack of seasoning and lack of flavour of any kind. Presentation of the food was non-existant and so was the food in terms of proportions, for my pulled pork burger there roughly 50gm of meat mixed with shredded carrot. My biggest suggestion to the owners would be to invest in the help of a qualified chef to come up with a better menu, and source fresher produce.

Such a lovely spot...hidden in a cosy nook. Coffee and turmeric are just the best! Will be back to try the bagels.

The Lemon 🍋 Curd French Toast was very tasty, unfortunately the Soy Latte was absolutely disappointing, the coffee was burnt and the milk thick like a dodgy milk shake coffee sludge at its finest 🤮🤢 Won’t be recommending or returning.

E for Ethel has been a weekly staple of mine for the past couple of years. Everything on their menu is incredible and is complimented perfectly by their insane coffee. Hands down the best in Adelaide! Always the first coffee place I suggest to friends if they in need of a brew :)))

Ethel's is my happy place. Friendly cheerful staff, amazing food and coffee and funky jewellery and homewares what more could a girl ask for!! My friends and I love making a day trip to travel from down south just to spend a few hours at our favourite cafe! I would highly recommend their coffee, orange earl tea and the cute little carrot cakes!!

superb quality nutrition, tasty snacks to suit everybody with ample functional space to relax in a tranquil lush setting. WiFi is great as is the Ginger passionfruit drink & vegan chocolate brownies. Local art gifts always being replenished so SO handy for gifting & seemingly always open. The vibe at E for Ethel is SO informally delightful, SO casual that I married my wife there :-)

Love this place! The service is impeccable, the coffee is delectable and the food is delicious and unforgettable. Now as you say that last word..."unforgettable" just think of Nat King Cole singing "unforgettable, that's what you are" . enjoy your Tuesday!

I'm one of those annoying customers that always makes alterations to my meals and the awesome peeps at Ethel's are more than happy to oblige. They always go that one step further to make your day the absolute best! Coffee is delicious! Eggs always cooked perfectly, and their sweeties... YUM!

What can I say?! E for Ethel made my year! My 6 year old asked to go there for breakfast to celebrate her 6th birthday. We don't get to come here a lot but each time we come, it's an amazing experience! This time was no exception. My daughter requested an item that was no longer on the menu and these amazing guys went out of their way to create her dream! She said she had the best day ever! The food was incredible, coffee great as always and the service before and on the day went beyond my expectations! Thank you E for Ethel. You've done it again! Be proud!
Alexandra Taylor-Engelaar
BEST coffee in Adelaide, yummy food, friendly staff and gorgeous handmade/local/eco gifts! I also love the old English vibe from the quaint tea pots/cups accompanied by a side of scones with jam & cream. This cafe is 10/10

Came in today for a coffee with a friend. I was so impressed by the GORGEOUS gifts on display. A coffee shop supporting small local businesses... a big thumbs up from me. The coffee was great too! Definitely coming back

I have never felt more like a valued human that I did on my first visit here. I had no money on me (hopeless, I know). The girls were lovely and made me the most amazing coffee which I paid for later. Love!!!

What a wonderful little place for young and old! Fantastic menu- the kind of menu where it takes you forever to decide what to have because everything sounds delicious!
The staff are super friendly and happy to cater for little ones- high chairs provided and they even have a full set of ikea plates, cups and cutlery available- we didn’t even have to ask for it!
We will definitely be back!
This cute tucked away place will have you feeling right at home. Great coffee, service and treats on offer. Been here a few times and it’s been just as good each time. Love the shopping items and artwork, have picked up some great gifts for friends and myself here. Clean and simple menu for brunch options. Locally sourcing and supporting is always a win in my books.

A nice hidden little cafe along Melbourne st. set back from the road. Went at lunch time and wasn't too busy. A wide selection of bagels on their menu. I have heard many good things about their coffee, it was nice, however we weren't blown away by it. The staff were friendly and there were cute handmade items for sale.

E for Ethel is tucked away behind parked cars in a group of shops set back from Melbourne Street so it can be easy to miss but it is worth looking finding. I went there for the first time on 14 Feb 2017 and found the decor to be fresh and clean - so it could be that it has changed since other reviewers have been there. The service was very friendly and quick, and the smoothie bowl fresh, tasty and well presented. The soy coffee while a little on the weak side was still fine and the sizes offered were generous.
The range of interesting gifts adds to the experience - they are not cheap but many of them are handcrafted which always add to the cost. I found the presentation non-intrusive and added to the fun feel of the ambiance of this place.
Summary: Great service and good food; coffee okay. Good value with realistic prices. Fresh and fun ambiance, and laptops and meetings seemed welcome (free WIFI as well). Plenty of parking on the streets either on Melbourne Street or in the side streets - pay attention to the restrictions on time as there are parking inspectors on some days. Open 7 days 9am to 4pm which could make it a little late for the breakfast crowd but it is good to find a cafe open later in the day. Worth a try? Absolutely - I am pleased to have found this little place in this part of the city and will be going back again ... and probably again.

I was really impressed with the lunch I had here with my client. After reading the reviews I was skeptical but we had brilliant happy and friendly service. I found the reviews the complete opposite to my experience. It had a homemade and earthy feel to the food that made it kitsch. The food was very fresh and healthy.. after a big weekend it was perfect to help get me back on track. It certainly beats the common loud and cookie cutter cafes that seem to be popping up everywhere. I hope this place thrives and survives in this overly critical world of social media beat downs. I will be back and so will my liver to get some more healthy choices! Well done who ever is at the helm

E For Ethel is a cute and crafty little gift shop that stock a variety of unique Australian hand made and sustainable gift products. The place is decked out in mismatched décor which gives off a homely and cosy feeling. They also double up as a cafe serving up a small breakfast and lunch menu.

Poor Service with a rude server! We went to meet some friends found a table that was not reserved when we sat down! As I ordered coffee she said we may have to move, we really wanted a table four as 3 of us were eating and a 4th was possibly joining us later... I never even had the chance to explain why a table for 3 was not big enough!!! She offered us a refund! We found a warmer place just down the road. So disappointed!

This cute cafe located on Melbourne street is a hidden gem. They serve great coffee as well as a range of sweet and savory breakfast and lunch options at reasonable prices. My favourite thing about this shop is the range of gifts they have for sale. There are things for everyone and lots is locally made, so if you're ever in the area pop in and you'll never know what you might find. E for Ethel is a great place to catch up with friends for brunch during the week or weekend, give it a go and support small business.

The first time I visited E for Ethel I was lunching with a fellow foodie. What I came to discover was a brilliant space with good distractions, a cafe and store, store display carefully curated selling handmade things by South Australians. Great support for local business. Service friendly with a smile and then came the food....the delicious food.

Love, love, love this place! My work colleagues and I were looking for a new place for lunch on the weekends and we have definitely found a keeper! E for Ethel is tucked away in some shops off Melbourne street and it is a very cute and inviting place. The service was so friendly and efficient, very warm and welcoming as well. The lunch menu is great with a choice of salads or sandwiches. I had the smashed avo and quinoa on rye and absolutely loved it! Very tasty dish with corn, tomatoes and feta and the rye bread they use is so good as well. The dessert cabinet is also impressive with a large selection to suit a variety of dietary requirements. I was impressed to see a fructose free dessert, coconut choc pudding with macadamia crunch, made by Sweet Lola. I got that takeaway for afternoon break and it was so yummy! The cafe is also a shop with a range of very eclectic gifts and cards, some cool little presents there. Can't wait to go back and try the chorizo salad and some of the other desserts.

E for Ethel is my favourite cafe in Adelaide (probably Australia, and maybe even the world) 😊. The coffee here is GLORIOUS. And the food is always beautifully fresh and satisfying. Using simple, clean flavours and a variety of texture to complete the experience.
I can come here and sit and write for hours while Amanda, the ultimate host, makes you feel as if you're an old friend who's wandered in for a coffee at her kitchen bench.
This also happens to be the perfect place to pick up anything you may need in terms of gifts, and at the same time you'll be supporting local artists who sell their wares through E for Ethel.
Love love love this place. It's a little slice of heaven.

E for Ethel doubles as an ethical cafe and local high-priced gift shop (like all gift shops are). Tucked away down Melbourne Street, you might miss it if you blink. The service is cordial albeit slow on our visit whilst the interior is nothing but cute. My mushroom bruschetta with rocket, dukkah, relish and prosciutto was satisfactory but far from extraordinary while the ginger passionfruit soda drink was a refreshing winner but a bit exorbitant for $7. Not bad but not amazing tbh.

E for Ethel is a cute, quirky cafe and gift store owned and operated by sweethearts Daniel Harland and Amanda Matulick. The products they sell are Australian, handmade and sustainable and they’re huge supporters of everything good for you and our planet. As for the food? It’s simple, clean, locally sourced and full of yum!

Pleasant venue, but weak coffee, NOT the best even in North Adelaide. Maybe today's barista? I liked my Granola, my wife thought the Haloumi was bland.
Hannah Lou
Best coffees in Adelaide. Wonderful atmosphere and stunning location. E for Ethel sells amazing bits and pieces which are incredible. Love I this place!

A nice little cafe along melbourne st, selling handcrafted items as well. It's probably a good place for people looking for vegan or gluten free food. However coffee is just weak and the food I had was bland.

Nice but nothing special. On a wednesday morning they were already out of ingredients! It's disappointing when they don't have too many options to begin with. I ended up having the pancakes and the berries were sooo tangy. For such a cute and hipster place you kind of expect in season fruit so that was a let down. But it was still quite nice. I enjoyed going there and will be back to try the bagels with pumpkin hummus! Also they got so many dietary options so that's very good. If you've got the money and time then this is the place for you.

Super friendly staff, tasty food, great coffee in giant mugs. I like the ambiance also, my kind of music and a nice range of modern art. Have been back a bunch of times :)
Steve
Delicious De Groots coffee, tasty cakes and friendly staff housed in a cute cafe gallery. The sticky date pudding with caramel sauce is very nice. Will be back to try out more of the cakes on offer.
Alyce
Gorgeous cafe & gallery with a wonderful vibe and lovely, friendly owners. The food menu is not huge but is packed with fresh, tasty offerings and accompanies a good sized fresh juice list. The coffee is excellent and for the non-dairy: they offer coconut and almond milk as well as soy. There are a range of vegan, GF, dairy-free, raw etc offerings available in the cabinet and many vego mains able to be (cheerfully) converted to vegan.
A hip cafe tucked away under the vines of Melbourne street, North Adelaide. It is a cafe and gift store, with a real retro feel about it. The food and crockery make you feel as if you are over at your grandparents house. Just as you would receive some words of wisdom from your grandparents about living your life, the lovely staff give you a written quote to accompany your coffee - a bit like a fortune cookie, great one percenter. The food is simple and different to your usual cafe suspects, something to experience.
Julia Clarke
Super gorgeous space nestled in Melbourne street! The coffee is delicious De Groot (roasted in Port Elliot) and the wares are all made by Local Australian Artists.
The owners are really lovely and remember you each time you come in, and best of all - YOU GET TWO LITTLE SWEETS WITH YOUR COFFEE!

It's a great place to catch up with friends or get some work done.

Seek and you wil find......this awesome place. Had to stay in Adelaide for work. A friend told me to check this place out. I loved it. Awesome service, super friendly and great coffee. In fact after 6 weeks in Adelaide and doing numerous coffee places, this was the best. I just wish I had a chance to try and meal. But make the effort to seek this place out. You wont be disappointed. It has a great vibe and feel. Its the kinda place I could lay on a couch and just read and reflect and find inspiration.

Great little place, good Coffe, service with a smile. Try the pumpkin wrap

Made with love. Great spot. Mixed crowd. Staff obviously love what they do. Prices seemed almost too cheap for what we have. Lots to look at while you are there.
Midnight Snack
This cafe is a lovely gem hidden away on Melbourne St. Coffee great, food delicious & really great prices. Owners very friendly will definitely be back!
Laura
Cute place, crap food. Avo.... Cute place, crap food.
Avocado was a sloppy mush on a tough bagel and the croissant was press-toasted so much that it was more like cardboard. No flavour at all. It's a shame as this place has so much potential but can't even make something so simple taste okay.
Zoe L
Cute gifts, friendly service, over priced and average food. Peppermint tea came with large serve of honey and four chocolates - while this is cute, I found it very wasteful, same with the cutlery coming in a paper bag. Won't be returning.

Best cafe on Melbourne street. E for Ethel is AWESOME. From the décor to the food to the service to the vibe - it's just all wonderful. Great place to chill out and read a book over a coffee, or meet with friends for a delicious breakfast. The staff are eight shades of lovely too.
This is my new favourite café on Melbourne street - such a great little retreat and a much better alternative to Wild Thyme.

Fantastic mochas and food. Was recently in Adelaide and discovered this fantastic cafe. The people who run it great and extremely friendly. Their mochas are to die for!!!
I highly recommend visiting this cafe.

Lovely. The people who run this cafe are absolutely lovely. They have succeeded in establishing a cosy and relaxing environment that is very welcoming. Great for coffee, light meals and quirky gifts or art.

Go for the experience, not the food. Tucked away in a little corner of a office complex on Melbourne St., E for Ethel is one of the coolest little coffee nooks I've ever seen! My boyfriend and I visited E for Ethel for a coffee and a bite to eat on a busy Saturday afternoon. He ordered the well-reputed Savoury Bagel with Avo, Semi-Dried Tomatoes, and Camembert cheese. I ordered the bruschetta.

Our coffees were delightful! They came out with 2 jelly beans each and a snippet of a dictionary page; our "word of the day" (mine was submarine! :). Unfortunately, neither of us were impressed with the food. It's all very simply made, like you could do it at home. The good part about this is that you know exactly what you're getting; ingredients taste fresh, and taste exactly as they should, no tinkering with fancy spices or techniques.

The shop itself is lined with hand-crafted, locally-made trinkets and gifts. It's such a wonderful experience just to browse through the items and enjoy the atmosphere of the cafe.
Melissa Teo
Great atmosphere! Very funky and retro. Had a savoury bagel which was delicious! Excellent service as well. A hidden gem on Melbourne St. You wouldn't know it's there unless you know where to look.

Coffee and service. Coffee is good, service is very good. (From a one-off visit in August, owner remembered us 6 months later.) Supports local craft, kid-friendly, very welcoming.

Amazing soy coffee! Great service and a lovely unique spot! Highly recommend it!

This is us!. E for Ethel is an owner operated start-up space run by sweethearts Amanda Matulick and Daniel Harland. The shop is the result of dreaming, saving and working DARN hard.

We don’t have any financial backing, there is no leprechaun hauling our gold store......every cent comes from our own pockets and every cent we make goes back into the space.

You will often find friends and family visiting (and often helping!), and it’s not uncommon to see us sitting down for a cup of tea and a chat.

We love getting to know YOU, your name and your coffee. Our customers are our friends (when we’re lucky!) – don’t be surprised to see them doing the dishes too... (we always reward them with treats!)

We always strive for sustainable solutions, recycle and reuse where possible!

Our gifts are all HANDMADE :: AUSTRALIAN :: and SUSTAINABLE and a great percentage are South Australian – and ALL of them lovely. Our café supplies are organic, fairtrade and local when and where possible.

If there is something you’d love to see us do, serve or provide, come and have a chat. We love your ideas and seeing the space grow into a community hub! Our space is your space. Be kind to it – and enjoy!

Thank you for supporting our business! x

Super adorable, kitschy and retro cafe just off Melbourne street. The staff are lovely and friendly, and the coffee and food is tasty and cheap. I got a really filling fresh made wrap and a chai for $12. Heaps of cute gift ideas to keep you occupied in the shop for a while and a nice quiet atmosphere. I feel like I'll be hanging out here a lot more often.

What a lovely little secret full of wonderful craft, art and nicknacks. A very special place to spend time with friends.

Great coffee!. I finally stopped by for a coffee and melting moment at Ethel after It was recommended to me by a friend. It was honestly the best cofee I have had in a long time. There were limited food offerings but they were all tempting so I will be back to try a light lunch there. Also great to see a gift shop that sells very unique and local products. Its exciting to find a hidden gem like this.

Super cute & cosy cafe. E for Ethel is gorgeous! Amazing decor with an abundance of beautiful things to buy- from prints, to handmade jewelry and brooches and cute cards etc. We had the richest, freshest scones with jam and cream, english breakfast tea and a couple of coffees. Each item was served on gorgeous vintage plates/teapots/cups and with a cute personalised touch- little hankies used in place of cloth napkins which I loved. Good coffee, lovely tea and a sweetheart behind the counter serving. Loved it, can't wait to go back.
Natalie
E for Ethel is the cosiest, friendliest and best place to while away an hour or two that I have found in years. Delicious hot drinks, yummy cakes and cookies, and gift shopping to boot! Do yourself a favour and make Ethel your new local.
Alex
Lovely quaint coffee house. This secluded shop has a variety of funky arts and crafts for sale but I go for the consistently good coffee. Amanda and Dan can pour a coffee better than most you'll find in Adelaide and will do so with a genuinely friendly attitude.

I tend to rate coffee as either terrible, ok, good or great, I'd rate Ethel as "good+" This is after about half a dozen coffees here.

Like all good Adelaide coffee houses they focus on coffee rather than food, so grab a bite of lunch elsewhere on your way here.

The soy chai latte was ok. There wasn't much gingerness detected, but it was nice and the cinnamon was carefully added and not caked on like many places outside Melbourne seem to do.
