Review Taj Tandoor - Adelaide

Joy Fernando
Came here for an early dinner on Sat night. Was surprised by the generous serving sizes here. We ordered the deep fried mushroom for entree and 2 x curries and couldn’t finish it! Flavours were good and loved the decor and ambience. Very elegant Indian restaurant topped with wonderful service. Would definitely return.

Was at this establishment for dinner with a date. Excellent service - staff were friendly and responsive. Ambience was apt - satisfactory lighting and seating arrangement for a nice intimate dinner, my only slight criticism was that I was a bit cold. Food was excellent - started off well with some lamb racks that were wonderfully marinated and cooked, followed by Naans which were satisfactory and Curries that were full of flavour and spice, something that I don't frequently find in Indian restaurants in Aussie unfortunately. To cap it all off, it was reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice place to have some Indian food.

Great friendly staff welcomed us in very late at night close to closing and nothing was too much trouble, their only request was that we ordered everything at once - typical friendly Indian hospitality, very generous portions for a good price and came out in order all hot and fresh. I loved the traditional flavours of the food, highly recommend the tandoori chicken it melts in your mouth with perfect flavours and mango lassi. Very rare to find an Indian restaurant that ticks all the boxes for me (given my father is a chef and I grew up in his Indian restaurants) I would proudly recommend the meals and service at Taj Tandoor to anybody who visits Adelaide.

The service was nice but unfortunately I don't think the food was very impressive. I think my butter chicken was around $20 and it had around 4-5 pieces of chicken. The flavour is very tomatoey - great if that's what you're into, but I prefer creamy. Both the naan and roti were dry and flat, they tasted like biscuits, absolutely would not recommend ordering those items. There are plenty of far better dining options around this restaurant which are more deserving of your coin.

Fabulous Indian cuisine, friendly, very attentive staff and very cold beers. Great decor. Definately living the dream. I highly recommend this restaurant and will be back soon.

Despite my food arrived in 45 minuets which was only single curry with rice and Naan Bread, these guys deserve 5 star rating fro food and service. The lady manager was amazing, kind and know how to handle customers. 5 star for her. Thanks food amazing food guys🙏🙏

After a long time i found a place in city which has good authentic Indian food. We ordered 4 curries, all were equally good. Naan was good as well. Just felt like they were bit understaffed on a Friday night. Apart from that really loved the food.
Alison Cambridge
Loved the food, I had the butter chicken was delicious, others had lamb korma, spinach & lamb dish, chicken ragout (?), rice and naan bread. Would recommend a visit

We went there for a dinner in a group of 20. Absolutely loved the service and the food was delicious. Staff was quick, lovely, always smiling and very polite. The owner, Sukhi, himself came to our table few times to make sure our food was okay. Highly recommend to anyone looking for authentic Indian food in Adelaide.

Was in middle of fringe extremely busy. But that didn’t matter. Very quick service and absolutely delicious food. Had the Rogan Josh and Chicken Masala, rice, cheese naan and riata for 2. One of the best Indian meals I’ve had.
Helen Richards
Absolutely one of the best Indian meals we have enjoyed. Service is excellent and the atmosphere of being in the heart of the city just makes this place one of my top 10.
Katrina Miller
We have been here for nearly 2 hours and no food because half of our group ordered a banquet. So we are hungry while watching half our group eat. Needs better organisation to ensure customers are fed!
Arvind Duggal
Great food with great customer service. Must recommend for foodies .already on list for next visit . 👏
Stephanie Wie-Harris
Great food and service! Location in Adelaide city centre is really good too. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves a curry.

One of the worst restaurants we have ever been to. Dinner for 4 people included the simplest dishes of Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer and 4 Naans. It was a busy night but a 50 minute wait for the food is unacceptable. There was even no cutlery on the table and was finally handed over after 2 disgruntled visits about it and food enquiries at the front. Finally the food arrived and we were indeed surprised with the minuscule portions. Barely enough for us but we were apprehensive of daring to order more. When presented with the bill we tried to offer constructive criticism but we were taken aback when the staff started arguing that the inside of the restaurant is not their responsibility but of the other wait staff and somehow we didn't order entrees so it was not their fault. Surprising behavior indeed. The staff is in need of training and the portion sizes need to be increased to be in tune with the prices. I definitely will not be coming again and will tell my mates to steer clear as well.

We visit Taj tandoor quite often. It's is our first choice when it comes to Indian restaurant in Adelaide. Service is pretty good. Food is amazing and have the best curries we had in long time. Staff is very friendly. Specially Neeraj who was looking after us he gave us very good suggestions about food and drinks. Overall we are very happy with food and service at Taj tandoor.
Lynne Auld
Wonderful place top marks for quality of food choice of dishes on menu is good and great service second, visit still as good as first time. Try out thr tandoori chicken best ever!

Harmeet Singh Ghumman
Excellent experience every time I come here service and food really good..
Georgia
We were extremely disappointed with our visit here today. We waited for almost an hour for food, when we finally got our food and the garlic naan looked shocking - first naan did not come all together after all first round they give the naan then all naan look like they are roti spread the garlic on it The service was worse as well the food. I’m not sure what’s happened however, I did expect more.

With its cosy interior and high ceilings, I can see why there is such an establishment on the ever popular Rundle St. Entrees included fish pakora, samosas (which were huge!), and chicken tikka. Mains included lamb korma, butter chicken, garlic naan, cheese naan, and roti (butter). The service was a bit slow, but cannot fault the quality of the food given the price and generous portion sizes. For a seemingly high end restaurant dishing up authentic Indian curries and Tandoori food, this place deserves more recognition!

Great dhal and Devine lamb tandoori. Well done! The best wine so far called mother’s milk 🤪. Yes you heard it right and it is really good. Just drop by and you will know what I am talking about

Firstly, the service is beyond amazing.... Every time. I absolutely cannot fault the staff. <br/>Taj tandoor was great some time ago.... Sadly, not any more. Saturday night was one of the worst meals I've ever had...... The prawn dakshen was sickly sweet and flavourless. Prawns were drowning in fluorescent yellow sauce with a bucket load of uncooked onion.... No tomato or coriander present. <br/>The "garlic naan" was uninspiring, burnt and covered in butter... No garlic to note. <br/>Papadums were overcooked. <br/>Although I didn't try any of my co diners dishes..... They all looked nothing to the standard of the previous incarnation of taj tandoor. All drowned in an excessive amount of sauce..... No care in presentation.
Wombatinabox
Entrees: Delicious samosa. The crispy baingan seemed a tad overcooked, but the sauce on top was tasty.<br/>Mains: Butter chicken. Tender rogan josh, comfort food. Special mention to daal charcoal, so flavoursome.<br/>Pulao rice was good. <br/>Fab naan. <br/>Attentive service. <br/>We overate again.<br/>I'd like to return to try some of the charcoal grill dishes.
Chef On The Run!!
I had a complete vegetarian meal(as my friend was vegetarian)at taj tandoor.<br/>I ordered for dal charcoal(one of the best dal in adelaide i ever had),paneer chilly garlic (which was just average),rice (was just below warm),crispy baigan (tasty and amazing but its sauce lacked flavour).<br/>Overall an average vegetarian meal, maybe next time i will try their meats.
Global Foodie & Filmy
Nothing brilliant and nothing very bad either average Indian restaurant. Good for fast meal if you are in a hurry. There are other better Indian restaurants not far from here for better food
Despina Gatsis
While I am a lover of all things spicy, I decided to go with something mild. With my guests going for the typical butter chicken, I chose the Prawn Dakshen. SA Prawns sautéed in tomatoes, coriander, onion and a coconut cream. Boy oh boy, I cannot fault this dish apart from me wanting more! The texture of the sauce was fantastic, if it were socially acceptable to lick the plate clean, I would've done so! Highly recommend.

Beautiful flavours and authentic taste. Being an indian and a foodie i can vouch for this place. The restaurant is in a heritage listed Victorian building, which adds to the ambiance.
John Dakota
Nice character building and atmosphere. Been coming here since i was a teenager. Never disappointed. I Don't agree with some reviews about food not being authentic. i have tried almost every indian restaurant and have travelled to india, and no one came close to authenticity as taj tandoor. Recommended to anyone looking to try the best indian in adelaide.
Raj
Good food, but the food is not Indian, its with too much cream and other stuff which makes it ozefied. Many of my Aussie friends ask me where can I get authentic Indian food and its hard for me to point some these days. Chinese restaurant s maintain there authenticity, why not Indian restaurant.

This is one place I have overlooked for many years. Purely because I rarely choose Indian due to the bloated feeling resulting afterwards. However, I'm pinching myself now that I did not visit them earlier.<br/><br/>Set in a Victorian building with massive windows that overlooks the east end of Rundle Street, it provides an ideal spot to watch the world go by whilst tucking in to some Indian favourites.<br/><br/>For a Tuesday night, the place was rather busy, good indication that we could be in for a treat.<br/><br/>Upon entering, the place smelt amaZing! It made my mouth watered. This is their instant saving grace because the interior was a little tired with light fittings that appears dated. The beautiful handmade furniture could use a lick of lacquer to freshen it up. I personally was more excited by the exterior.<br/><br/>We were greeted and seated. Water was poured for all present. Papadums was offered. Our fifth member was running late, so we decided to order for her, seeing as we will be sharing anyways. Entrees consisted of the mixed entree, chicken tikka, samosas and prawn tandoori.<br/><br/>For mains, we had the saag chicken, butter chicken masala, fish curry, alu gobhi and prawn dakshen. All acompanied with rice and naan.<br/><br/>Everything was delicious! The chicken from both entrees and mains was tender and succulent. The fish was perfectly done. The prawns was also spot on. Didn't mind the vegetable dish, but wouldn't rate it too highly.<br/><br/>For desserts we shared the stickydate pudding and the cardamon with pistachio ice cream. Being a non-sweet-tooth, I found both desserts to be sickly sweet. Alot of H2O was required to chase away my potential cavity.<br/><br/>I'm unsure why this establishment was rated so poorly, because our experience reflected none of those negative reviews. For a place that values authenticity and fresh ingredients, it deserves a second chance. I'm looking forward to my next visit. Best part, no bloated feeling - WIN!<br/><br/>

Great food. Super attentive waiters and staff. Is now my go to destination for eat out Indian. Got sick of the same old flavors from Indian restaurants. Was not disappointed when i left. I think the older, negative reviews are not longer relevant (except for the TVs!!!). Try it for yourself. Awesome!

Taj Tandoor was absolutely incrediable food and service. Their service bring me a feeling of important and appreciated. Food quality gave more than my expectation ( example Butter chicken with a lightly sweet, and a praw dakshen with coconutmilk, tomatoes and onions) which sweet me up after the meal, love it. All staff members alway asking for feedback from us to make sure we are happy in everything. After the end of the night , they alway Encourage and welcome suggestions about how you could improve on their food and service. Well done.. We will come back for sure

Dinner. Came here for an early dinner end of March 15.<br/>Visiting from Scotland.<br/>My husband had the madras and I had the prawn curry.<br/>We felt the flavours were all similair as the madras was not hot.<br/>My prawn dish was very mild, with not much flavour.<br/>A 3 pot curry house is how I would describe it.<br/>Service was excellent though...
Lucy
We popped in here for a curry before a Fringe show. We've been been before on numerous occasions over the past 15 years. It never fails to delight us...the food was quick and rich and tasty and great value. The service was efficient and smiley. The bill was reasonable. The vibe was busy and buzzing. Unpretentious Indian in a great location.

Decent Indian restaurant. Visited Taj tandoor on 12 March for dinner as I craved for a curry and wanted to try Taj tandoor after recommendation from a local taxi driver. Having tried Jasmine Indian over several times, wanted to try out Taj to see if it was any good.<br/>Had the following for dinner:<br/>Butter chicken masala - well cooked chicken tikka pieces in a tangy, mild sweetish gravy. Pretty good 8/10<br/>Saag paneer - spinach gravy with cottage cheese 7/10<br/>Roti - well cooked wholemeal flour bread 7/10<br/>Pulao rice - average basmati rice 5/10<br/>Service was good at 9pm. <br/>Overall worth a try.

OMG, YUM!! Cheap meals, amazing service, perfect taste! The meals come out quickly too. Incredible aromas. Definitely a highlight of Adelaide.

Much nicer than some reviews suggest. We live right near this place on Rundle St but I haven't been there before - I was tempted by a voucher deal for our party of four. The reviews on this site are remarkably various and some quite hostile, but on a Saturday night it was pretty full with people who looked like they were enjoying themselves. It's well known that the manager lady runs a tight ship but this night she was in a good mood and the rest of the staff were very pleasant and efficient. The food is really very good (I come from the East Midlands in the UK and know a good Indian restaurant for sure) and there was nothing wrong with any of the dishes and the serve sizes are adequate. The voucher, which included 2 bottles of wine, was extraordinary value - the full prices are on the high side, perhaps because of the location. When we left the manager asked if we would write a good review (perhaps feeling the need of it), which I'm happy to do.<br/><br/>We went back twice on other vouchers and again confirmed their value. One plus is that the curry serves are larger than average for Indian restaurants. The beef curries are very good quality meat. We ordered an additional serve of rice.

Best Indian food in Adelaide CBD. Hands down the best subcontinental fine dining experience in the Adelaide CBD area. Great extensive variety in menu, excellent service and an exquisite setting and atmosphere. Highly recommend it.

Great food and atmosphere!!. I had dinner here with some friends, and I loved the place! One of my favourite indian restaurants in Adelaide! The food was delicious and the proportions were pretty good. Service and atmosphere was amazing as well. I highly recommend this to everyone, it is a must go to place!

Great Restaurant. Such a lovely place to hang out with friends as well as to go with family. Butter chicken is the best dish so far. Great food, great service and great place.

Scammers!. Scam 1. Menu on the front window shows much cheaper prices than what they actually are. Reality is theyre actually around $5 more than advertised. <br/>Scam 2. Charged $7.80 for three pupadums. Made us think they would be complimentary. <br/>Scam 3. Lazy service. Even took ages for the bill to come out! <br/><br/>On the plus side, the food was great. But seriously...a heads up

Yummy Food. We have been enjoying Taj Tandoor food for over 20 years. I think we have actually worked our way right through the menu over the years - we especially love Pammy's prawn dishes, Rogan Josh, Vegetable Jalfrezi and Jeera Aloo, although everything is good. We have always appreciated Anne's warm welcome and hospitality.

We thought the food was delicious and the service was very good. The curried fish was very tasty and the Matter Paneer was delicious and perfectly spiced up on request. We were there early tonight and avoided the crowds that sometimes slow the service down. Staff were attentive and very quick.
Anastasia
My cousin and I dined here for the first time tonight before we went to the movies.<br/><br/>The staff were lovely, the food was delicious and the service was excellent.<br/><br/>We were made to feel really welcome and will definitely be booking a return visit soon!

Great Indian Cuisine. Always great service, great prices & wonderful food

Never been so disappointed in a dining experience, ever.. 7 reasons why I will never go back:<br/><br/>1. Seated at a dirty table, covered in rice and sauce, with used glassware.<br/>2. Took 1 hour to receive any food. There were only maximum of 20 people dining at the time (most already had their meals).<br/>3. We had clearly finished our entrees, however it still look another 20 minutes after finishing to get their attention to send out mains.<br/>4. The mains made us both sick in the stomach half way through eating them.<br/>5. All the curries have no flavour, my lamb was overcooked and not very enjoyable to eat. My partner's chicken was undercooked.<br/>6. Over two hours of "dining" was just a waiting contest.<br/>7. The restrooms are dirty and the stalls in the women's bathroom don't even lock/close<br/><br/>Poor service, shocking cleanliness and too expensive for tasteless food.<br/><br/>COMPLETELY OVER RATED

Lunch with friends. I went out to lunch with some friends on the weekend and absolutely loved the food! It was a great experience and the staff were really friendly. I loved all the dishes I tried and hope to come back for some more soon. I would definitely recommend this to others. 10/10!! :)

Best Indian Food in Adelaide. I have been to many Indian restaurants, but Taj Tandoor is one that always keeps me going back for more! My favourite dish is 'Prawn Tandoori' - very yummy! I would definitely recommend people come with their families!

Fabulous night out. I had the pleasure of going to Taj Tandoor on Saturday night, along with 2 of my friends.<br/>We had an absolutely fabulous night and the service was faultless. Pam was adorable and kept of checking on us throughout the night and making sure that we had everything we wanted and that our meal was good.<br/>A fantastic night, meal was "to die for" and the staff were very attentive and helpful.<br/>We will DEFINATLY be back
Sid009
Best Indian Restaurant in Adelaide. I have been going to this place for many years. Went there for dinner last night again. I have tried all other indian restaurants in adelaide but never get the taste which i always get from Taj Tandoor. Food is great and consistent.<br/>Great place to have dinner at. Will always go there again. Highly recommended. I give 5 stars to this place. No other restaurant stand near it.

Great food!. I don't know how this place has got such low ratings!? Everytime I've been here the food was been exceptional and the service was great. No complaints on my end here. I would say go there and experience the place for yourself, or heck try some other places like the ones on Scoopon AND THEN come back here.

Excellent food. Excellent range and variety of food. Everything was delicious

Garlic Naan and the Butter Chicken Masala. Most of the dishes are very good, ut can't get enough of the Garlic Naan & Butter Chicken Masala, it's my wifes favorites as well. The food is always consistent & good

Best Indian Food. My husband and I have been coming to this restuarant for nearly 30 years. The food is fresh and delicious, frienldy service and nice atmosphere. We have done a lot of travelling and no other indian restuarant compares to Taj Tandoor. Best indian food.!! Ross & Antoinette Jamieson

Fantastic Indian Restaurant. The best Indian restaurant for an authentic Indian food with great taste.I like all the food but my favorite food is Cheese naan,Chicken Madras and Gosh Palak.<br/><br/>Thanks to the Manager and Chef for such a delicious food with great quality.
Tkuhl
Paul. Went there last night. Thought the food was great. Travel in India a lot and this is to our taste.<br/>Particularly like the prawns and nann.

Truly a Fine Indian Dining Experience. It's not the first time we've come to this fantastic restaurant however every time we do it never ceases to amaze us with those wonderful flavours and the ambience that only a packed out establishment provides.<br/>We expected delays this evening given the number of clientele however we were pleasantly surprised with the prompt and personal service we enjoyed.<br/>The food, as always is top shelf and so reasonably priced, given the location in one of Adelaide's premier restaurant districts. The wine list was equally outstanding, which did well to assist in adding to a wonderful dining experience.<br/>Thank you to all the staff....this is certainly a venue which will remain close to our hearts.......and appetites.....5 stars.

Best Indian restaurant in Adelaide. This is one of the best Indian restaurants in Adelaide. We have never been disappointed. The curries are delicious, the staff are friendly and always welcoming and the service is faultless. I would highly recommend the prawn dakshen and butter chicken which are our favourites. This is a gem of a restaurant and well worth visiting. The food really is amazing. You must try this restaurant for the best authentic north Indian food in lAdelaide.
Angela_asima
Absolutely Delicious Indian Cuisine!. The food at Taj Tandoor is absolutely delicious! The chicken tikka is succulent and very tasty. I really enjoyed the prawn dakshen. I can easily say that it harbors the best Indian food in Adelaide. I love it, would recommend it to all of my friends and lovers of Indian cuisine. Well worth a visit and I will certainly keep going back. Anne Sandhu, the owner, is very friendly and the service is exceptional.

Taj tandoor. Exellent food. Love the atmosphere, best service. Great place to bring the date. Loved the prawn dakshen. Food is consistency good every time we being there. Even at peak time service is fabulus. Love being there every time.
Harry_rocks44
Amazing Curries. Went with my girlfriend and my family for dinner. Service was decent, staff friendly. The wait wasn't long at all, considering the place was full. We ordered the banquet, the curries were fantastic, the butter chicken is the best one I've had than anyone else's, and the Rogan Josh was great.
Youvebeenschooled
Last coffe i will ever have. The idea of ordering coffee after a meal was ruined for life after i visited this place. The coffee looked like camel spit covered in dirt, it was colder than my mother in laws face. I feel as if they took their time to give us our order, just to make the place look busier than it actually was. Overall i would say the management have absolutely no idea how to run a business and need more staff. If you are looking for the standard of a reheated meal from a service station this is the place to go !!!
Robert Eaves
BEST curry I've had in a long time !. Don't pay attention to the negative comments on here, maybe they went through a bad patch but my experience was excellent. The curries were absolutely delicious, perfectly spiced and the meat melted In your mouth. The cheese naan was delicious, hands down the best I've had and the rice was aromatic and cooked to perfection. Service was very good, efficient and friendly, the manager comes across a little stern but she was very helpful and clearly good at her job. You should definitely give this one a try we will definitely be going back.
Alex Likly
The worst place ever eaten from, ordered take away and I was running 5 minutes late so the manager tells me he gave it to some friends. Ridiculous service and slack management/organization skills, and overall the chicken was fatty and tastkess
Boyles
Disappointed. The food was very average, the lamb curry was grissly and cheewy. Also, we were told we could not use our Entertainment Voucher becuase it was a public holiday Monday, even though in the book 'rules' it does not state this. We drove past 3 other resturants that we could have gone to, but chose to go to Taj Tandoor in the city, parked a few blocks away and walked to what we were hoping was to be a good dining experience, very disappointed, will not go back.
Ditam001
I wish we had not decided to go out for dinner. I complained to the manager, who repeatedly boxed me between a wall and a door she kept opening, after she did it THREE TIMES, and was told I am the first person to complain, with no hint of apology. Such arrogance. Zero out of ten. Do yourself a favour and don't go there.
Dbutcher
Deane. Taj Tandoori has always had bad service, but we thought we'd give it another try. It hasn't improved, in fact the food has declined as well.<br/>We didn't complain about having to wait for our mains, but several staff kept apologising. When it did come the manager explained that we'd ordered dishes that take longer to prepare, hard to believe, as my fish curry was more than a day old and reheated to the point of being dried. My partner had a vegetarian curry, also below par.<br/>Waiters asked if we'd finished eating, then walked away without taking any empty dishes. <br/>At least this time we didn't get charged for more wine than we ordered as we did on a previous occasion.
Sheridan99
Overcharged. Food was satisfactory and arrived OK. Pressure was on to order more than we wanted.Service chaotic but they were busy. Realized after arriving home that we were OVERCHARGED by $44. Don't normally feel the need to check bills closely in Adelaide.
Jay1
The only thing worse than the grime and rotting flowers was the service presided over by the most unwelcoming manager that I have ever experienced. It must take a breath and renew itself.
Mark Anthony
Why is this restaurant still in business? Worst service ever experienced. The manager is a nightmare. M
Ben
Bad service is their mantra and was well rehearsed by the woman boss tonight yelling orders to here staff across the room to repremanding them if front of guests. And don't you just love being asked to pay upfront just as your meal has been served.
Fooooooooood
DODGY, DODGY, DODGY!!!. Mediocre service, terrible food and the worst, hold onto your credit cards! My card number and security code was written down by the waitress without asking who said it was for some "discrepancies". When I asked her further questions she became very very uneasy and did not give any answer. I had to ask for the piece of paper!! Definitely keeping an eye on my bank account over the next few weeks!!! VERY DODGY!!!!!!!!
Emmac
Very disappointed. Terrible customer serviced. Waited 45 minutes for drinks & over 2 hours for meals to come. Was asked to pay for our meals when we ordered them as it was a 'busy time'.
Nemzy
Went there for lunch. The service was quick, waitress lovely and food delicious (try the garlic naan). The place was empty but really enjoyed.
Priya
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone the food and service was below average. Will not be eating there again.
James Davis
Service is a bit shambolic, but the food was really quite good. We had pretty much all of the vegetarian dishes, some naan, rice and a salad and we were very satisfied. Good setting, nice windows too!
Gcl03
Disappointing. Good rogan Josh , generous sizing of dishes ! struggled to deliver meals in a prompt manner on I gather what might be a busier than usual Sunday night . Staff under the pump and I suspect a manager who couldnt care less ! Disappointed by what seemed poor account keeping on our overcharged bill by some 30% , which raised my suspicions . Overall I think this restaurant survives on its prime location , not so much return business .
El_camio
Foods not bad. Service is. DAMN FLAT SCREEN TV.... I expected a lot better for the prices and location. The service was alright over all but there were a few delays. We had to ask for the freezing air conditioner to be turned down four times before anything happened, shivering in the meantime. The food wasn't bad. We generally enjoyed it but weren't blown away. Very frustrated at the presence of flat screen televisions in an otherwise nicely decorated place. They are conversation killers and not what you expect at a proper sit down dinner venue. Wouldn't go back.
Yianni Boutso
Crap food , crap service , crap price , crap crap crap
Diner Experience
What came out for just under 20 dollars, looked and tasted like it had been in the baimarie for a few days. Not once when asked if I was enjoying my meal was it picked up on that I actually said it is reasonable and I have had better at home. Not going back there are much better indians in richmond!!!
Foodie
Worst ever Indian Food. This is one of the worst dine in places I have ever seen. The place looks nice in interior but rest all is crap. From the music they play, the smell of the restaurant as if its not cleaned ever, the food was also not good.We had samosas for the entre and they were all cold and for the mains we had aloo chana, dhall, rogan josh and garlic naan .The meat was so dry, the potatoes were raw and dhall was tasteless. The manager or owner has her own story, seems to be a psycho as she kept screaming at the staff and abusing them in her native language and dont know what she was doing two girls kept following her and making a hilarious train like thing and then the owner way of talking looks like a wanna be thing. All in all a crap experience and the pappadums not comlimentary they charged $7 for 4 pieces. A shame on Indian food. Worst ever..never go...!!!
Nicholas Hanson
The Indian version of Fawlty Towers. The most confusing and stressful dining experience we have ever had. We had the 'privilege' of being able to order our drinks from the bar, but it took 30 mins to recieve the change. Their till system was a plastic bag. Extreme pressure to order banquets to make it easier for them (even though they were $15 more). Finally recieved our meals an hour after ordering, contemplated leaving before they came. We're considering going to church on Sunday.
Ketan Parulkar
It's like crapper on a plate..!! I would prefer frozen food from Indian supermarket...!!!
Catherine Chapman
Very bland. Poppadum platt.... Very bland. <br/>Poppadum platter to start was a joke- 4 cold and soft pops with yoghurt and chili sauce which tasted like it was from the bottle.<br/>Main courses were flavorless (chicken tikka and butter chicken) <br/>Good points were location, decor and garlic nan. 6 waiters standing behind the bar failed to clear our plates and offer desserts, ended up going to the bar to ask for a coffee! <br/>All in all, we will neither rerun here or recommend it.
LilMissOpinionated
Lovely Little Indian. I'm surprised by some of the bad reviews here, because we had a lovely meal. <br/><br/> Towards the end of the Mad March my man and I were wandering the streets of Adelaide in need of food. <br/><br/>Most places on Rundle St were heaving, and Taj Tandoor was no different, but we spotted a spare table and hoped it wasn’t booked. <br/><br/>Success!<br/><br/>We then sat down to a rather nice indian meal. <br/><br/>The food was just delicious and tasted very fresh. We felt it was fairly priced and the portions were generous. The service was very good, although we did wait a little while for certain dishes, staff were all over it and chased things up without having to be asked. <br/><br/>I would definitely recommend Taj Tandoor, and we will dine here again.

Terrible Terrible Terrible. Food is bland and the waitresses look like they would like you to choke on your meal.<br/><br/>Charge for water and overcharge you if you order over the phone. Saying you are looking at the old menu. which is total BS because its on their site.<br/><br/>Anyway, don't go here. Go to British Raj if you want to have good Indian food and a great experience.

Bland. And dodgy addition on the bill! Read itemised bill carefully!

Great. Saw this one in the entertainment book. Service was great, food arrived quickly and was very tasty, restaurant is in a good location with nice atmosphere. The only disappointment was that some of the beef wasn't melting in my mouth. Overall was pretty good though and I would go there again.

Misbehaving Chef. The worst experience of my life at an Indian restaurant I had ever was when I called the restaurant after picking a takeaway Malai Kofta(it was stale and Not eatable at all) and got to speak with the Chef. The misbehaviour by the Chef (he did not tell the name) over phone was the worst experience I have had ever in Australia. <br/>Now I understood why none of the Indians dare to visit them. May Gad save you all from the stale food and that Chef's misconduct.

Endorsed by Lleyton Hewitt! (Apparently). Rocked up without a booking on a busy Friday night. Rather than the usual rolling of the eyes and "we'll see what we can do", the young gentleman behind the desk was really friendy, and found us a table after a couple of minutes (while we inspected the plates that had been signed by seemingly every Indian cricket team ever...and Lleyton Hewitt). Whilst it took a while to get the table laid and the wine list, we found all the staff to be really helpful, even if they weren't assigned to our table.<br/><br/>Started with the poppadoms - probably the only disappointing part of the meal. They came with just raita and a watery sweet chilli sauce - which was somewhat bland. On request, the waitress brought out some mixed pickle, but I'm surprised that they didn't come with this as standard.<br/><br/>Also as a starter, the tandoori chicken was well flavoured and grilled. It came on the bone, but had been butchered to remove those gristly bits you get on the leg, which was a nice touch. Glad I hadn't ordered it on a first date though – chowed down pretty hard.<br/><br/>Beef vindaloo and Gosht Palak were our mains, accompanied by a single serve of rice to share and some roti channi. At first they looked a bit small - but it was plenty. Both were excellent – my spice fiend of a partner was quietly convulsing after the vindaloo (edible spicy with a hint of footstamping).<br/><br/>Great place for a Friday night meal and good chats. It’s noisy in the good, atmospheric way – so best not to come and sit doe-eyed with a partner, but to get stuck in!

Food ok but there is better Indian around one of the plates they brought out was wet and hadn't been properly cleaned

Beautiful indian food!. Ate here on a saturday night and contrary to other reviews, we had a lovely experience. We had a great table next to the front window and the staff seemed quite friendly. We ordered the 'movie deal' which was a main including rice and a palace nova ticket for $33 which was quite good value! I had the chicken katsu (katju? something like that, don't quite remember!) which was creamy and sweet, really delicious!! My boyfriend had the lamb rogan josh which he said was nice (although a bit spicy for me!). The only hiccup was the waitress forgetting to bring out our drink order which I don't blame her for as the restaurant was packed. Food came out quickly enough and the bill wasn't dodgy at all. Can't wait to go back!

Crooked people, READ YOUR BILL!. This place is messed up. They're obviously scratching to afford the rent because everyone I've spoken to has been ripped off by them. They have<br/>-claimed that the menu doesn't include GST<br/>- charged an UNADVERTISED surcharge during the fringe festival<br/>- charged for things that weren't ordered<br/>- charged for items that were 'complimentary'<br/>- not accepted entertainment vouchers<br/>- not calculated things correctly<br/><br/>So even though the food is okay, the terrible rude service and the fact they try to steal from their paying customers is enough to put me off for good. <br/><br/>There are loads of better Indian places in Adelaide and HEAPS of better places to eat on Rundle St (go to Chopstix across the road instead for amazing taste and GREAT value)

Taj Tandoor - Adelaide's best Indian restaurant. I have been going there for last 30 years. They use to operate in light square. Taj Tandoor undoubtedly is one of the best Indian restaurant serving high quality food and service. My daughter's favorite dish is Butter chicken and my favorite dish is Biriyani.

Stunning food and great resturant. Enjoyed the meal and atmosphere tremendously. Wide range of authentic Indian food is available and catered to all tastes. Hospitality was very personal. We had an aweosme time.

Perfect food. That was the first time Iwanted to taste the indian food in adelaide. me and my friends went and Iwas familiar with a few of indian foods. we were 10 people and we got 10 main foods. we all share together to taste different foods. because I am familiar with spices and cooking, I can say this is the best food Ihave ever had. main foods I recommend are tandoori chicken mix, butter chicken and beef malaba. lovely drinks like mango lassi was match to our foods. as I hearded about this restaurant, even other indian restaurants in adelaide consider the cheif of this restaurant as the best .

Never again and tell all of your friends. Just thought we would drop in for dinner after a movie. Shown to an uncleared crowded table, asked for another and moved to the back of the restaurant. After 30 minutes my dining partner walked up to the counter and asked if someone could take our order. A waitress came and took our order including drinks. That was it!! I beckoned another waiter after about 20 minutes and asked after our drinks, he said they were coming. They didn't, after another 15 minutes we left. No one even noticed our departure even tho we walked right past 4 waiters at the front counter. We had a prompt and delicious dinner at scoozi.

It's just not cricket. Menus were thrown on our table with no one asking if we wanted drinks. Eventually we got a waiters attention who looked at us blankly when we asked for beers. They eventually arrived via another waiter. Glasses looked like they were washed in the Torrens River and one glass had a huge crack in it. We then got two more beers and ordered our mains. One hour later none of our glases or bottles were cleared and no one asked us for another drink/wine order. Needless to say we got up and left only to have the waiter say our mains were on there way. Too late people. No one gets my coin with such crap service. We had a great meal at Eros across the road!

NEVER GOING THERE AGAIN!!!!. I went there with some friends on Friday night. The service we got was crap. Sat there for 20 minutes waiting for someone to take our order, but no one came. Had to go to the counter to get someone to come and take our order, even though there is supposed to table service. <br/>The whole time we were waiting there were 2 staff members chatting casually even though they knew we wanted to order. The person who took our order, who we think was the manager, was not happy. She didn't even look at us when taking our order and the poppadums' we ordered was missing. It was added on the bill and the manager didn't seem to understand what we were saying when we said that we didn't get the poppadum's. <br/>The food was okay but the service was terrible. Some of the staff members were quite rude and only one was nice and had a smile on their face. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, at the rate they're going, I'm surprised they're still in business.

Used to be good but now dreadful. Bad service, cramped squashed tables, noisy, rude staff, overpriced food. Was good when it was on the other side of Rundle St say 7-8 years back but has gone down hill since. Rubbish - there are plenty of better alternatives in Rundle St so why bother with this place?

Service in this day and age is the key to any good business. When the service is bad it doesn't matter how good and authentic the food is. This restaurant either needs to sell up or change owners because I have never seen a manager run a business with the rudeness and arrogance as the owner of this place. She even went as low as abusing her staff outside in the aide alley. If this restaurant was not on such a busy eating street it would go under for sure..... Avoid this place at all costs... The Consumer affairs need to step in I agree... Im always going to judge places by urbanspoon comments as I wish I had checked the comments before spending over $300 here

Terrible.. The absolute worst service you could imagine at a restaurant.<br/><br/>The food itself was decent enough, but the service completely clouds any judgement on anything else.<br/><br/>We were in a group of 10 for a birthday dinner. After some initial confusion regarding the staff even finding our booking, we were shown to a table with very little space. The staff wanted to push up even further up against the wall, but we managed to convince them otherwise.<br/><br/>Pappadums were offered by a few different waitresses. The general consensus was that we weren't interested, however they seemed to be fairly intent on putting some out there - we later discovered that the 3 serves of 3 pappadums (not 4 per serve as the entree menu suggests) they insisted upon us were charged to us at $7.50 a serve.<br/><br/>Main meals took an hour to come out, and when they did the staff got a couple of us to pick up the bowls of food off their tray they were carrying, telling us they were hot so they didn't want to touch them.<br/><br/>After eating, it took our table about 40 minutes to sort out payment. Additional items which we hadn't ordered had magically appeared on the bill, the bill was itemised with prices next to each order, yet the prices did not add up or even come close to making any sense, and the manager seemed to want to argue on every problem we had with our overall dining experience.<br/><br/>The staff did not look happy and were not overly friendly, the manager was rude and the service was quite simply absolutely terrible.<br/><br/>I recommend that everyone stays away from this restaurant at all costs. After my dining experience, and noting other reviews on there, it is obvious that Taj Tandoor should be investigated by the Department of Consumer Affairs, and ultimately be forced to close.<br/><br/>Workers at Taj Tandoor, I hope you read this review.<br/><br/>Your restaurant is a complete disgrace.

After making a boooking over two weeks prior, we arrived at 7.30 only to be told by an old fat Indian woman, dressed entirely in black and covered in gold jewellery, that the restaurant was full so we had to be seated "in the back" aka near the kitchen door.<br/><br/>It took over 15 minutes before a waitress came over and in the middle of taking our drinks order we realised that she couldn't speak English so we wrote down on her pad the drinks we wanted (two glasses of cab sav). 15 minutes later she came over with a glass of lemonade and three papadams. She looked at us blankly as we tried to describe again what we wanted to drink, only we were interrupted by manager who came over and screamed at our waitress in hindi and physically pushed her so hard she nearly fell over onto the next table.<br/><br/>Twenty minutes later our wine arrived. For the next two hours as we waited for our mains, we listened to the screaming and crashing of plates and cutlery from the kitchen, at one point a skinny kitchen hand was chased out by who I assume was the chef (a tall man in a turban), carrying a frying pan.<br/><br/>We saw three tables walk out. two got into screaming matches with the manager and the other had to sneak our the side entrance after leaving money on the table for their drinks.<br/><br/>Another waitress was reduced to tears and sat crying on the stairs rocking back and forth while another consoled her. It was explained to us later by another waitress in broken English that the manager had threatened to have her deported if she didn't work harder.<br/><br/>To top it off, they overcharged us and refused to take the 5 jack daniels and coke that we didn't order off the bill. <br/><br/>A painful and disturbing dining experience. Avoid at all costs.

Gah, what Horrible service. Detailed review to follow. Food was ok but nothing to write home about. Worst service I have ever experienced, anywhere.

Nice food, but awful prices and worst of all: AWFUL SERVICE!! We were a group of eleven and had been waiting for half an hour for our drink orders. We also had to wait another hour for our food! And those were just the entrees (which only two people ordered). It took even longer for our mains to arrive. Not only this, but they flubbed our drink orders three times and always left quickly before we could request a missing fork or plate. We just had to make do with what we had! The prices were also insane. The meal was over $400 because they charged us for the "complimentary" papadams that were supposed to make up for the awful service. Every table around us (who arrived well after we did) got their food and finished it before we even got our mains!! Awful, awful restaurant!!!

Worst Dining Experience. I have never experienced such a badly run restaurant. <br/><br/>We walked into the restaurant after booking a table for 12 only to be directed to a table for 2. After telling them we booked for 12 at least 3 times we were finally directed to our table, which had chairs against the wall so half of us could not even get out without moving the entire group out. <br/><br/>Also, cutlery was scattered on the table with some seats not even having ANY. We ordered some drinks while waiting for our friends which seemed all good until we were sitting there for 15 minutes with no drinks arriving. Finally they arrived, in the smallest glasses possible (also about $4-$5 a glass). After this we were all VERY tempted to just pay and leave but we thought maybe the food would be worth it. <br/><br/>Food was ordered, we waited for at least an hour for it to arrive at the table, with none of them arriving at the same time. We were also constantly asked if we wanted papadum platters, which we denied on a number of occasions by the same person. I ordered papadums to come with my main with the menu stating "4 per serve" and only received 3.<br/><br/>Finally, after we had all eaten I went up and asked for the bill. The lady behind the counter said she would bring it right over... 15 minutes passed... another friend I was dining with decided to ask again... 10 minutes later and we finally had the bill ONLY TO FIND there was a surcharge of the total of $15 added because it's Sunday?! Maybe tell us this BEFORE we order! <br/><br/>After putting the money together, we paid... and waited for them to process it for at least another half an hour before we could FINALLY leave the place.<br/><br/>Ended up walking out of the restaurant 110% more stressed than when we walked in the front door. <br/><br/>Do not recommend this place at all!

THE worst service ever. Welcome was non existant, even though we booked in advance. We were pointed towards a woobly table in the corner that hadn't be cleared. <br/><br/>We ordered poppadoms for a starter, they didn't arrive. I asked for a glass for my beer, it wasn't brought. I asked for some water, again it didn't appear. My partner's main meal was thrown down, no rice, no cultery. We waited 10 mins for my meal to arrive, still no rice or cultery. Meals were cold by the time either appeared. <br/><br/>Bill came, suprise suprise poppadoms were charged, I told the waiter he dissappeared. Another then came with the bill, poppadoms were still on there. A complete joke, no organisation at all and food is average at best.

WORST DINING EXPERIENCE YET. Overall we were disgusted with the poor service - waiting over 30 minutes - just for a drink to be brought to our table, the way the manager Anne yelled at her staff - ordering them around even while they were taking orders, how not everything we ordered was bought to the table - despite asking three times for the missing items, and having to eat in darkness (in fact when another table asked for the lights to be switched on they were told if they did not like it to leave). However we feel the real icing on the cake was the waitress yelling at us as we tried to pay our bill - trying to force us to pay for a bottle of wine we never consumed, stating that it was on her computer so someone had to pay for it. Have not had a worse dining experience yet - utterly dissatisfied.

Avoid it like the plague. Okay now I've been to a few shocking restaurants in my time but Taj Tandoor takes the cake (if you can get it).<br/>Upon being seated at 7:00pmwith my friends for one of my other friend's bday party we talked for about 30 minutes until more of the party arrived.(7:30pm) Not once were we asked if we needed anything in that space of time.<br/>When we did get the chance to order it would have been about 8:15pm. At this point we ordered 5 Butter Chicken, 6 serves of rice, 2 entree serves of the Lamb Chops and 1 Chicken Masala. We also ordered 4 drinks.<br/>I had to follow up with the owner where our drinks were after waiting about 20 minutes for them. It then took another reminder and 10 minutes after that for them to finally arrive to which we were compensated with papadums.<br/>At approx 9:30 only 2 entree's had hit the table to which the chops were like cold cardboard and were supposed to be accompanied by one of the serves of rice. The rice turned up with the mains at 9:45. I complained on behalf of the party to the owner before our mains arrived that we wanted to fix up what we owe and just leave. She was then pretty blunt and rude and said "see everything in the kitchen lined up? Well that's yours, it's coming" to which my girlfriend said "well get it out here then". We were then given a complimentary bottle of white wine, which, ended up on the bill at the end of the night and I had to dispute the charge. <br/>DEAD SET THE WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER. Not to mention a night on the town with the girlfriend was then cut short by me feeling quite ill approx 45mins after the meal.<br/>If you're going to dine there I either suggest you take a really long novel, a well charged ipod or iphone or maybe calling hell to see if it's frozen over because then and only then will you get a good quality dining experience at this establishment. If there were negative stars available i'd give it a -3.

Worst Dining Experience of my lifetime.. After waiting 2.5 hors for our mains to arrive we decided to leave and pay for just our drinks. The manager did not like this and locked us in the restaurant until we agreed to pay for the full banquet we ordered but never received. After many other tables trying to walk out she called the police to have them say they only need to pay for what they have consumed. She still was not content with this and tried to barter with us. We were treated like dirt with no consideration to us as customers who had at this stage been in the restaurant for 3 hours and had nothing too eat. There was no apology offered and we were spoken down to. After we left one of the waitresses walked up to the police officer and asked" She doesn't pay me is there anything you can do". it's an absolute disgrace.

I went to taj on a Monday afternoon, around 2pm and was a bit disappointed. When I arrived the staff were shifting tables and chairs around the restaurant, which is fine, except I wasn't greeted at the entrance very quickly. The layout of the room is one where you need to be seated. This annoyed me a little as nobody else was eating at the time. I eventually got a seat when they finished moving their things around. I ordered the chicken masala, and a naan. The food came out quickly and the serving size was large. The garlic naan was a bit too greasy (you could see the oil floating on the top). It was still tasty though. The main dish was excellent. No complaints there.

Not impressed. I cannot qualify myself as a food critic but being an Indian food lover, this is definitely the worst experience. Please do not get me wrong, I love food in Adelaide and this is the only disappointment.<br/><br/>My partner and I ordered papadum platter as starter, samosas as entree, malai kofta and chicken butter masala as main, with eggplant raita, garlic naans and pulao rice. Papadam and samosas were tasty. When we tasted the chicken butter masala, we thought we had ordered chicken butter soup for the masala was tasteless and watery. The only description to fit it would be watered-down bottled sauce. And for the malai kofta, my partner described it as bland. Not much cheese or almond, just potato balls with flavourless gravy.<br/><br/>We tried to explain about the food to our waitress, who passed on the word to the kitchen. Not long later there was this guy who seems to be in charge glanced over our table, that was the only answer we had.<br/><br/>I wished we checked other reviews before made our way to this restaurant. Below take away quality food on dine out price. Total bill: $92 including 4 pure blonde beer.

Excellent Indian fare!. I loved everything here - we had many dishes and shared, but my litmus test for Indian food and something I love especially here was the Muttar Paneer

Delicious. The banquet was a great deal and more than enough for our party. Try the beef malamber.

The place itself is in a prime location on Rundle Street. The decor is slightly traditional with a few modern touches. All your traditional Indian fare is on offer so there are no surprises here.

The beef vindaloo was tender but not spicy enough.. However, I did think that the portions were a little small for the prices…

Our previous trip to the Taj Tandoor, on Rundle Street, was towards the end of last year, quite late on a busy Saturday night. On that occasion we enjoyed our food but were left underwhelmed by the service. We headed for a return visit on Friday night – t
