Review Caledonian Hotel - Adelaide

Ian
Excellent table service and tasty food. The chicken Parm was great I added bacon as it didn't come with ham, the other dish was salt and pepper squid both were great. The cokes we ordered came in a glass bottle with glasses and there was a candle lit at the booth we sat at. The atmosphere was friendly and the prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend coming here.

From the booking process right through to the event, the team at the Caledonian Hotel delivered! The most amazing service, the most amazing function room, and the most amazing food. Everything went perfectly and we had an absolute ball!

Pleasant enough pub with lovely courtyard. Good service. Very busy dining area. Amazing selection of wines and spirits. Meals delicious, apart from seafood basket which was a little average. Perfect steak house chips. Burger delicious. Steaks and pork cutlet cooked perfectly. Hard working waiting staff were attentive and professional.

We enjoyed a lunch here a couple of weeks ago. The pork belly was absolutely delicious as was the Asian salad with salt and pepper tofu. Staff were very friendly and focused. We'll certainly be back again.

I had had a poor experience some years ago at this pub, and hadn't been back until Friday night. Staff were friendly and helpful. Orders were placed for dinner....and then we waited... and waited. I wouldn't say that the pub was flat out. I'm guessing it was about 25% capacity, but we waited well over an hour or more for the main meals to arrive after the entrees. Apparently, there was a large group before us..! We had to ask for the table service we had already been offered, as no-one seemed to know that we were there. My meal was standard pub food as pictured), but my friends ordered the Whiting ($40+?) Two fillets of "Whiting" arrived. We mistook them for Tommy Ruff! Thankfully, an embarrassed waitress understood the situation and after a while, another lot of Tommy Ruff sized fillets came out for those who ordered the Whiting. Once the food eventually arrived, the night got back on track...

Beautiful little Pub, with a great bar garden hidden away. Cocktail food was nice (Salt and Pepper Squid was very saltly) but other than that rest was good. Outdated pokies though felt like early 2000s

We had a Reunion get-together after more than 30 years since we worked together. Lovely dining experience with friendly and efficient staff made for a fabulous night! Kind regards, Lorraine Porter

My daughter had her 21st booked in the beer garden on 23rd of September 2017. Booking her party, organising and upfront pricing, with no hidden extras, made for such a relaxing evening. The venue was perfect; the staff were friendly and highly professional, keeping me up to date all night with bar tabs, food platters and cake serving. The staff were brilliant. The food was served hot, fresh and with friendly smiling faces. The barman we had that night was excellent; his personality, manners and professionalism just really made the night extra special. I think his name was Jake. Apologies if i have your name wrong. The entire night was relaxed and friendly, allowing us to all enjoy the special night with very fond memories. I highly recommend the Cali for birthdays or functions. Such a nice atmosphere and close enough to the city without being too close. Great location too. Thankyou to all staff who made this a truly special night for my daughter. Alex Hooper.

I had my wedding in the beer garden area and it’s was truly an incredible night! The staff, particularly Jess and Jake were incredible! The food was great, the atmosphere was great, the grounds were great and the service even better! They communicated with me all night and were so very accommodating! I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding venue! Truly spectacular and I couldn’t be more thankful! 10/10

I have never been here, until a friend had her 60th on sunday. I must say I was blown away by the friendly staff, awesome & yummy food & feel of the hotel. Very happy with everything. I am hoping to come back soon with friends so they can have the same wonderful time I had. It's a gem that seems to be hidden.

Held my 40th Birthday Party here on Friday night...Jacqui was amazing organising everything I needed leading up to the party and both our bar tender and duty manager on the night couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. The function space was brilliant and definitely value for money, the platters were delicious and a great drinks menu. A fabulous night had by all and will definitely be recommending to others as well as returning for the next big party myself!

My daughter had her 21st in the beer garden a few weeks ago, it was awesome. The staff were amazing, super helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Food was fantastic, everyone who came had a great time. Highly recommend it for a function.

Disappointed with a simple beef schnitzel. To my surprise the waitress knew it was very over cooked, yet still served it up to the table. She gave an account how the Chief knew the deep fryer was too hot. Customer service??????
Karen Sherry
Great pub, good atmosphere friendly staff food really tasty great choice good prices

We had a work dinner tonight and the menu and food was excellent. Really great service too. Just a bit noisy in the front room for presentations though.

We were a walk in for dinner on a very busy Saturday night. The hotel had three visible functions. Yet the food was simply sensational!! Service was fabulous despite how busy they were. Hadn't been here before and was delighted!

Brilliant party for Barry's surprise party, food was great, nice atmosphere and staff were super friendly and nice. Only thing I could fault was the drain smell that wafted in now and then, not pleasant, needs looking at :)

A big thank you to Jacqui Marin and all the staff at the Caledonian Hotel. We held Freddie Payne's 80th birthday celebrations in the Beer Garden on a perfect spring day on 8 October. The food, drinks and birthday cake - exceptional Black Forest - were fantastic. And thanks to all the relations, friends and musos who made it such a special day. It was such a jazz feast!

Great food friendly staff will definitely be back
Angie Meyer
Food was superb and service was exceptional. Thanks to all the staff! We are now planning another event at the venue.

Headed here for dinner and enjoyed the meal. The falafel burger was tasty and quite fresh with cucumber, yogurt and salad. This was served with chips which were really crispy and tasty. There’s an extensive wine list with a good selection of wines by the glass. Friendly staff and lots of dining spaces with rooms for private functions too. Parking can be a bit tricky if it’s busy in North Adelaide.

Great selection of steaks. (Would love to have Bearnaise sauce though)<br/>Used to be 50% off with a drink, changed to 30% off just before xmas.<br/>Great wine list.<br/>Also does monthly feature winery dinners with the wine maker attending.<br/>Restaurant is very good as well for a bit more formal.<br/>Very busy for functions on the weekend.

Salmon linguini<br/>Fish and chips<br/>Pork belly<br/>Scotch fillet<br/><br/>The decor was well suited to the surroundings; I felt at home as soon as I walked in. Our server was extremely hospitable and couldn't be better. Also, the service was quite quick and we all got our food in about 15 minutes.<br/><br/>I had the pork belly with crackling, and i can safely say that it had no negatives. The portion was exactly the right size for me, and flavour-wise it had everything i wanted. The pork was delightfully soft and well cooked, and the crackling accompanied it beautifully. Also, the buttered carrots and beetroots as well the silky smooth puree added an extra sweet and smooth element to the already stunning dish.<br/><br/>The fish and chips we had were good too; nothing fancy, but the fish was perfectly cooked while the skin was golden brown and crunchy. The tartare was also tangy and perfect. The scotch fillet we ordered finally satisfied my search for a great steak, and literally melted in my mouth with every bite. Our final main course, the salmon linguini was my only slight negative, because i felt it had too much salt. However, the linguini was al dente and the sauce had an enjoyable meaty taste to it, thanks to the bacon and the soft salmon.<br/><br/>For dessert we ordered the waffles and the chocolate dish, both which were delectable and delightful. I especially loved the warmth of the brownie with the chocolate ganache and cool ice cream, though the crisp waffles were equally delicious.<br/><br/>Overall i loved the food and atmosphere, and there were virtually no negatives in my opinion. Much recommended to any avid foodie, especially since the food is definitely value for money considering that it's quite cheap given the quality and the experience provided to us.<br/>

The amount of times I've driven past this place and not tried it is crazy, and finally came for a set menu Mother's Day lunch 2day ($55pp) and what a joyful experience indeed!<br/>We ate in the Barton's Restaurant side and it isn't really special in decor- just a modern cosy dining area with a view of a lovely looking wine shelf at the end, but the service and food was just fabulous. Shout out to Danika our lovely server who was just wonderful the entire time. The food speaks volumes in flavour, presentation and portion sizes. Though was a set menu it is a smaller version of their actual menu so have to mention the Scallops and the Barramundi (simply delicious on all standards!) Value for money was beyond what I expected and will definitely return indeed! 👌

Delightful spot in the outskirts of Adelaide. Food was absolutely to 'die for'. Smaller servings just perfect for lunch. Service was wonderful. Great time with family

Bartons Restaurant is situated in North Adelaide inside the Caledonian Hotel. There are plenty of parking spaces on the street or the back.  There is a pub section in this hotel, but I am going to tell you about the restaurant inside. . At Bartons, there is a special and on going offer where I think it is a bargain.  For $40 you can choose three courses, this can mean two mains and a dessert or if you desire you can have three main courses or three desserts.  I have been to Bartons Restaurant for a couple of occasions, and these are a collection of my favourite.  Pictures tell a thousand words, I shall let your taste buds decide.
Poppie
Poppy had breakfast at the Caledonian, it wasn't one to remember. Extremely simple and plain. Small serving of basic scrambled eggs, small portion of bacon, Aussie sausage, maccas hash brown, half a mushroom and tomato, some spinach and onion concoction with a slice of Tip Top White bread. Nothing exciting. Can't recommend, thumb down not worth an eat 👎
Gus' Gastro Review
Positive thoughts came to mind initially; experience from a previous visit solidified my snap decision to dine at Bartons Monday night. Interesting ground this, close to 3 years between drinks. Scepticism subtly crept in as I declared to my other half ‘maybe the chef’s having his Monday day off?!’ Was I right?<br/><br/>Chargrilled. What comes to mind? Charred and grilled sounds hot right? Wrong, swordfish is served cold on a bed of diced veggies and little to no hint of wasabi. Such a flavoursome fish bastardised, thrown down a path of contradictive menu statements, confusing diners – this must be noted on the menu. The braised duck; dried out, tasteless, flavourless, little to no seasoning, not surprised if it were pre-frozen, nuked and served on its bed of lacklustre horseradish aioli, the gnocchi being the only highlight, and I’m being mightily generous here.<br/><br/>We had decided to give 4 dishes a try, see how we felt, then if hunger allowed, continue with 2 more dishes. Disappointment reared its ugly head again in the form of a singular prawn and crab ravioli. Served with raw, fennel root, the dish proved itself every bit a tragic excuse for effort as the Barton’s owners consider their chefs worthy of the title. This was the pinnacle of poor value for money. Nuke and serve should never be considered, even within the confines of a dated and characterless establishment.  My suspicion that the reason why the only other table with customers ordered just chips confirmed.<br/><br/>Pokie revenue is keeping this place a float, but it is about time the reigns were passed onto another, upcoming chef who can utilise their skills to produce and creative something exciting with the advantage of a fall back. This was my saddest dining experience to date, the worst food I have ever eaten out. Even with the Entertainment card the bill came to $75 for 4 dishes and $18 corkage. Kudos to the very friendly and courteous waitress who made us feel welcome, while all the time clearly embarrassed by what she had to serve. This is the first time I’ve ever stated that a restaurant should not be tempted. 1 out of 5.

Not for vegetarians or busy people. Boring, predictable gnocchi was about the only choice for non-meat eaters. Only a few customers at lunchtime but still the service was very slow - more the food preparation perhaps as the waitress seemed to be doing her best working both the restaurant and the bar. Coffee undrinkable.

Scrumptious food in a lovely setting. Ate in Barton Restaurant. The temptation menu is well and truly worth experiencing, complements to the chef. For $29 you can choose 2 entree size meals which includes a glass of wine in the price or 3 meals for $42. We were a group of 4 and tried various choices with every meal being high quality scrumptious food. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Hail ceasar! (bad!). Worst ceasar salad ever! Dry, overcooked chicken and stale bread.

Food and service were great. Ate in the Barton's Restaurant. Service was excellent, served entree and main within an hour of being seated. Very well priced, atmosphere was good, food tasted amazing. Only slight downside might be the entrees were a little overpriced for what they were. Otherwise, very nice and would definitely eat there again

The Barton restaurant is worth a visit.. Not familiar with the rest of the Caledonian, but the Barton restaurant was a pleasant surprise when we ate there last week. We arrived a few minutes early and were shown to our seats, within a minute or so we received menus and a few minutes later after water was server we were offered drinks. My wife chose house champagne but the waiter upgraded it to Janz for free - I chose a nice red from a pretty good selection. We chose to share a large entree - no trouble at all for the staff, the mains were very good and sweets were superb.<br/>Summary: very good staff and great food at a fair price. Will be back.

Service was poor, food was average and very over priced for small meal.

Will not return. Went to the Caledonian as it was close to the cinemas and we an hour before the movie started. Ordered and handed over my entertainment card to say they couldn't accept it (even though they are listed in the book) and if we wanted to use it we would have to go into the restaurant area which was completely empty. Decided to stay in the pub area regardless as no big deal and ordered our meals. About 5 minutes later a waitress came up to say that they were completely out of the barramundi so thinking about the time I ordered the same thing that my partner had. I expected this to be quicker. I was wrong. It took over 45 minutes to get 2 ok-ish chicken burgers and when i asked about the delay the waiter said they 'were just plating up now' as he bolted outside for a smoke. <br/>When the food finally arrived there was no apology for the delay and my partner bit through a chicken wing with bone in his burger. We had to scoff it down to make the movie. Will not go back nor recommend

Wait is way too long. The food was acceptable but the long wait caused a bitter taste

Best burgers in Adelaide hands down, been doing all the bugers around Adelaide and the Caledonian is the best so far, ha it last night and going back tonight to have another,

Lengthy waits. There appears to be a staffing issue both in the kitchen and on the floor - there was one person in the Barton restaurant and he had to pull in people from the bar to assist. We had quite a lengthy wait for drinks, for our food order to be taken, our entree to arrive and dessert (however, there were apologies all round).<br/><br/>The food was not up to expectation. It is clearly an italian restaurant but was lacking the italian touch. Either lots of flavours happening which were swamping the main ingredients or dishes were lacking taste. <br/><br/>On such a competitive strip standards need to remain high.

The quallity of food is extremely good however, the poor service and unacceptable wait for the food to arrive far outweighs any redemption that the quallity of food may have been able to provide. Unless you have nothing else to do and nowhere else to be, I do not recommend an attempt to enjoy a meal here.
Jparsons
Be prepared to wait, and wait. Entrees took an hour, and mains an additional hour and twenty minutes after that. No apology. No compensation. Be prepared to wait and wait and wait at this place.

Homely and Casual. Great restaurant, very warm and welcoming. Service was great and so was the food. The food was wholesome, the servings were plentiful and the prices complemented the food.<br/><br/>A nice place to go for a homely and casual dinner.

I usually venture out to the Cally for social latin dancing on a Wednesday night. In between Salsa classes and the social night, I often grab something to eat.

I am starting to like seared seafood. Especially after the Aburi Salmon at Wasai and now these yummy scallops that just melt in your mouth. The sweet corn puree was a perfect match as well! Should have been given some bread rolls alongside to dip!

The Caledonian Hotel on Bartons Terrace in North Adelaide houses an open bar, beer garden and an adjoining up market dining room called Bartons Restaurant. On our visit, C and I dined at their restaurant whilst we cached up on the happenings over the past few months! Btw, since when did June come about?! We start off with an entree to share: Pan seared scallops with crispy pork belly, pea puree, cider glaze and pea sprouts; $18.90 A slight golden sear on the plump and juicy scallops on a thick smear of pea puree dressed in cider glaze. Nice subtle flavours, but unfortunately the crispy pork belly was… well, not very crispy and the pea sprouts didn’t make it on the plate. House made prawn and scallop ravioli with leek and tarragon veloute; $18.90 entree size This dish was not what we expected; we expected bite sized raviolis in a soft al dente pasta sheet. The ravioli size wasn’t a problem but the pasta sheets used reminded us more of wonton wrappers as they were slightly tougher and ch
