Review Sushi Bar Genki - Adelaide

OmegaZeroKiller
As an old customer, I must say that I am rather disappointed with the new management. Diminished menu selection, mediocre sushi quality and odd furbishment choices are just the beginning. On the bright side, they kept some sushi plates from the previous era for us to reminisce the good old days.

Staff looks dead. Food quality pathetic. Why put all sort of sauces on the sushi? Who does that? Guys just go to sushi train or Kintaro. You get much better food with the price.
Hailun Liu
The environment is lovely but I think some dishes were not cooked properly. My sister and I had a dinner here tonight and now she is having stomachache and diarrhea. Maybe a good way to have food then lose weight??? Staff were very friendly and hard-working. Do not order fried chicken - it's tasteless.

Not much options on food menu. Not enough deep fried or main course to choose. The only acceptable food is the salmon n scallop but portion are not much either. The rice didn't taste like sushi rice and no vinegar taste inside. Every dishes are similar and not much suprise or special. Decoration r not Japanese style. Color not match and the light r too bright. Not recommended for another round.

Upper glass sushi train really, and parking I city always hard, but prices are fair and service is fast! And it seems to be high quality ingredients which is a plus and sets it apart from other sushi train establishments

Changed a lot from before. Terrible sushi I never had, not much choice from the menu, lots of the genki signature food had disappear, no more ramen or rice bowl. If you order from the menu, they actually tell you 70% of item sold out, so funny, what’s the point that you made a menu but nothing can customer order🤨. Miss the previous owner and the team🥲they are amazing, the new owner destroy everything.

This place used to be great! Best ramen and udon in Adelaide. But ever since the reopening, I walked in and was disappointed to see that hot meal items were no longer available. And only one cup allowed per pot of green tea?! (You’re not allowed to share a pot with friends) That’s a little ridiculous. On the plus side, their sushi wasn’t too bad. It was passable for a sushi train. But it’s like my mother said “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it”
JJ J
I must say maybe it’s a bad idea for the new owner to use exactly the same name and logo of previous restaurant. Customers come in expecting Genki signature bento and noodle will be disappointed. But all the sushi uses the best quality ingredients.

Well....I came here around 2PM.I was so hungry so I ordered ramen,Udon,Donburi and Sushi. I'm not happy with your sushi and food.I was so disappointed. I have been to eat some sushi before .It was nice and tasty.but,Not today. Ramen is bit watery taste.I can't feel Any saltness. Udon is not too bad. Donburi is bit little taste. Not have much of taste.not savory.Sushi was so dry and soggy.also It looks like not a fresh sushi. Mayo look so dry also. And I ask,I just want to eat some fresh sushi. Staff said, "This is fresh.(for what?)" I felt, they ignored me. Also they said, "We are going to close soon." It means, they can make a fresh sushi anymore.I was so disappointed...you guys ruin my birthday lunch. I spent more than 50 dollars for your food. I realized,Quality of food is dripping.

I love this place but tonight was a new level. I decided to pop in for a post work sushi session, I got the tables on the side so you have to order all of your food from the tablet. Thought that was okay as I was traveling solo. As soon as I sat down I knew exactly what I wanted. Ordered 4 dishes and a beer. 2 dishes plus beer turned up in less than 5 mins. I waited 30 mins, the remaining 2 dishes didn’t appear. I asked where were they? To be told the kitchen is busy, although the 8 people that have now entered, have received food from the kitchen. At the 40 min mark I drew the line and said thanks but I’m out of here. All I got was sorry, no compensation, no please come back.....NOTHING! Tell me, has this place changed hands, I noticed the guy who was always behind the til wasn’t there, when he was there everything ran smoothly. I have also now read other people’s comments from the last couple of weeks and see I am not an isolated case. Shame, I like this place but if the service sucks I just can’t bring myself to go back.

Excellent service, yummy food. Best thing it is a family friendly place. One of our favourite places to eat!

Very friendly staff. Clean and very enjoyable environment. The good was fresh and do delicious. Great prices and customer rewards are always a good touch. Fantastic greetings and goodbyes. Will definitely come again

Best sushi train in Adelaide. Freshly made sushi, awesome selection, super fast and top quality customer service. Loyalty rewards for all customers and great price...we always go back and so much fun too

Food: Excellent Service: Excrement We attended a small birthday gathering with a tiny cake for the purpose of blowing out candles. The only staff member who approached us during the time we were there was a white-clad man who was rude and unwelcoming. First he rudely told us that we couldn't cut the cake. (We didn't.) Then after we'd blown out the candles he rushed up to tell us we couldn't eat it. (We hadn't.) Ironically if they had only sent a staff member to our table once in the whole time we were there they would have been able to add at least $20 for drinks to the $90 we spent there, but no such approach was made. The food, however, was as good as or better than any of the similar sushi restaurants I have visited. Pity the service was so lacking.
Nathan Moore
This is the best sushi bar I've been to coming back from Japan last December.. pretty much the same friendly atmosphere and amazing food! Will be back.. cheers
Tania Katopodis
Food and service always good, very happy with variety and you can have a beer or cider with your meal - happy

My fav go-to jap restaurant. Delicious food. Excellent service. Well priced!

I love the food here.... i eat here often and i still love it.
John Ng
The quality is dropping since the owner open another restaurant.
Nataliya Scoleri
Love this place. Great food and friendly service. Love the green tea!
Donna M Elliott
Food and people are great definitely go back again.
Foodie77
Worst service ever at Genki..The two girls were both inexplicable.. A girl with pony tail served the table water for us like the pic shows 🙄 and without saying anything..She just put them down and quickly walked away like we have viruses and infectious..Love the girls when we had lunch there before but tonight, always no please!
Kiley Li
The food and service are awesome! Only downside would be the cost which is a little expensive just like all other “sushi-train” restaurants. But if you manage to go when it’s $3 for all plates then it’s probably the best of its kind in adelaide. I swear the menu also increases every time I go there, it’s huge with stuff like wagyu beef and all sorts of combinations for sushi.
Shuminz2
It is one of the several open at Sunday. The price is somehow reasonable. But The seafood might not fresh. Not good smell oyster and weird-looking king salmon.
Authenticity
Good spacious seatings. The plates on the conveyor bell looked stale, so ordering straight from the self service menu. The ingredients are excellent, but the hygiene was poor as demonstrated in the photo some hairs on sashimi. The customer service was below average.

Haven't been for a long time. First thing to notice was decline in atmosphere. No loud greetings. No showing to seats, no one asking if we wanted tea or other drinks. All very subdued. It's one thing to use iPads as support, another to replace friendly service with one. Much less on the train but plenty of options to order from. It was all, just OK, still a relatively cheap night out for a family. Just not much a special experience anymore.
Weizhichen1016
That would be great if Zomato got 0 mark option. Expensive than the other sushi bar but quality of food is not as good as the other one even much cheaper.
James Haword
It is a place to eat occasionally. Tempura Udon and Nigiri sushi are good to eat.
I recommend salmon, eel nigiri sushi, and Asahi beer. Beer is cool and well managed.
Bianca Keen
Staff were friendly and orders came out very fast for a busy saturday night, vegetarian dishes were great with plenty of flavour as were the meat dishes, very well priced

Sushi Bar Genki is one of the best sushi train restaurants in Adelaide. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and of good quality. Our family favourite is the salmon belly sashimi. We always spend so much here as we just can't stop eating :D They are so good! Another bonus is that they have a small $5 udon bowl, which is very tasty and good size for the price. Definitely our favourite place to dine in!
Jenny Wilkins
I consider this to be the little sister of Himeji. Same type of food, but much cheaper and faster. You can take food off of the train as it rolls around, or you can order food from the iPad on the table. You don't have to interact with any servers if you don't want to. You can't book here, but I've never found the wait for a table too long. Everything tastes delicious, I have absolutely no complaints.
Jesstewart
I don't even know how many times I've visited this place.

Often leaving feeling satisfied, but on the odd occasion leaving feeling disappointed as the price is a tad high and sometimes unjustified for the quality and freshness of the sushi.

Sometimes this place can be a hit or miss for me personally.
I found that coming here through the week at quieter times the food isn't always as fresh as their sushi in their super peak/busy hours.

But, in saying that there has been more times that I've walked away feeling satisfying. The aburi salmon would have to be my favourite.
Yaya
Some of the best sushi in Adelaide. I love the process of ordering off the screen as well as picking off the train - ensures that everything stays fresh, even on a quiet Monday evening!
Anno
The sushi has cold soggy rice, overly sauced, aburi is burnt. The udon does not have seaweed, udon's egg is not poached but completely overcooked and mixed all over the soup. Can't say I'm happy. Used to come here just for their udon but doesnt look like they want to maintain quality anymore
Teeni Rolls
Decided to drive all the way to the city following great reviews on here to find the place is closed at 3pm. Website and Zomato said place opens from 12 through to 21:30. Extremely disappointed with this news!!!
Aszpad
We decided to come here after good reviews from zomato; at the end of gouger street a sushi restaurant appears. The outside looks very appealing as soon as we walk in we are greeted and seated straight away. Sitting around the train we noticed an iPad where you could order your drinks; call over the waitress and order food that wasn't on the train. I felt this was a nice way to order what you wanted without trying to get someone's attention.

There was a nice variety of food to choose from; everything was really fresh; the tempura vegetable sushi was really nice lovely flavours; soft shell crab and the fresh tuna was also well received. Service was really friendly; as soon as a customer left everyone yelled out goodbye. Will return
Eathealthy
They have nice sushi combinations that we don't see in Sydney. Dining at 2pm was less busy and their sushi still tasted fresh. No doubt I will dine again when I'm back in Adelaide.

Fresh fresh and fresh. Better taste than sushi bar and fresher. Really like the environment that you can use technology to order things, very convenient. Suggested !
Mikey
Been coming here since it opened. Use to be cheap and really fresh. Now it's average and more expensive.
There's one male employee who snorts back his snot constantly which is a bit off putting.
But all in all a good sushi place and a nice clean environment. Just hope it doesn't increase anymore and stays fresh.

Fresh sushi cravings are a regular occurrence in our household. For fast and easy satisfaction Sushi Bar Genki on Gouger Street is our goto location. It’s easy to breeze in, take a seat up at the bar and plug away at an order.

Ordering here is very simple, you go through the options on the touch screens at your seat, select which ones you want to order and send them off to the kitchen. You hear a fun ding sound that rings through and you know that your order has been registered.

We have been huge advocates of this place since it opened up during our first year of university. Affordable place and decent portions, we were there almost every week. But since last year the quality has pummeled to very disappointing levels. I don't know if it's to do with the disappearance of their more experience staff (to work at their new restaurant himeji which is a more expensive but not as satisfying version of Wasai) or if they are looking to cut corners in order to earn more profits. But their sushi can only be eaten as long as they don't break apart when you pick them up. And if you're are willing to spend close to $10 on a measly plate of low quality sashimi, face the facts that their prices have risen with shrinking portions by all means eat here. Or eat at the local food courts in rundle mall. They don't differ that much.

This is my favourite sushi restaurant in Adelaide. I have been coming here a while. The quality is super good and even better with an Asahi.
If you're on a budget weekdays 12-2 is $3 a plate such a great price.

Sushi Bar Genki, at the west-end of Gouger Street, is your standard Japanese/sushi train restaurant.

We've dined here a few times before. Previously, the sushi and other food items have been quite tasty and fresh. However, our last couple of visits have left us underwhelmed. The sushi has been less fresh and quality of other dishes has also declined. I also wouldn't recommend eating from the train. We're sceptical about long it sits there as we've had some bad experiences.

On the contrary, the fried chicken is particularly good and their new Autumn/Winter menu has some interesting dishes. The iPad ordering system is also convenient for those looking to dine quickly.

In all, it's hard to recommend this place at the moment as the food is very hit and miss. If dishes are ordered fresh then the food is good enough, but there's lots of areas the place can improve.
Hangrycat
Irasshaimase!
- The greeting you will more than likely hear as soon as you step foot into GENKI!
I have been here countless times and cannot fault the quality of the food. Although at times the service (requests for table water) may be off, the quality of the food and ordering system makes up for it. If you're looking for an authentic piece of Japan to eat but in a more casual-relaxed atmosphere, this is the place to be. Every time I come here, I hardly reach for plates on the train that may or may not tickle my fancy, but instead order exactly what I want from the accommodating iPads they have at all booths, tables and bar side seats.

As a self proclaimed Japanese/Sushi connoisseur, raw fish - certain cuts of raw fish and shellfish is what I call the 'prize' that my eyes are always locked on whenever I look at a Japanese food menu. Here at GENKI, you can occasionally find wild blue fin tuna belly (toro), black fin tuna belly and even sea urchin (uni) on the menu, which are generally hard to find at other Japanese restaurants, let alone sushi trains in Adelaide. They have an amazing sashimi deluxe plate ($29.80) which I find to be generous and always leaving me wanting more. The cuts of fish such as salmon belly and shimesaba are hands down one of the best with regards to how thick and generous the cut is. It tastes even better and you feel less guilty when they have their lunch revolution special on - you had me at $3 plates (until 2:30pm)!!! Salmon Belly, Scampi, Unagi, Aburi Scallop/Salmon, Uni, Toro, Sashimi... Seek and if it's your lucky day, you shall find! They did at one point have a Premium Kaisen Don (somewhat pricey BUT to die for) on their lunch menu but I haven't seen it ever since and am still waiting for them to bring it back!

If you're reading this review to decide whether or not you want to give GENKI a try or you're missing that little bit of Japan on your mouth - stop reading, live in the moment and start your journey there NOW! Ps, they are currently also adding a few new things to their menu so what better excuse to go and try... or if you have already and weren't too impressed... give it another go!

Have been going to this place since open, was really great back then. However, the quality of food has definitely gone down to the drain. We ordered Aburi, which was served as cold as if it just came out of the fridge. Miso soup used to be made of real miso paste, now it's just instant powder mixed with water and one still need to pay $3 for one serve. Potato salad used to be one of the highlights here in my opinion, now it tastes like, hm, let's not be rude here. As a person who has true passion for authentic Japanese food, it's a heart breaking experience today. If you are reading this review at the moment, don't come to this place anymore.

Best sushi in Adelaide...

Excellent articulation of Japanese cuisine with fresh produce coupled with impeccable service and an efficient ordering system. Don't miss it!
Makan
A popular sushi train joint with the locals and pretty busy on a Monday night so that's a good sign.

However upon eating the food on the revolving bar I found that all are either cold (do not order the okonomiyaki!!!!) or not crisp (soft shell crab roll). The better choice is order what's not on the bar and have the chef make it directly for you.

Overall this is a disappointing experience and I've had better in Adelaide. Will not return.
Sassenach
Good location but this place just missed the mark. It feels a bit grubby, the food isn't fresh (we were here for a lunchtime and the place was full). Third time we've been and I'm always underwhelmed. Meh.
Scottt
Decent sushi train experience, although the food didn't live up to the expectations set by other reviewers. The service is friendly, and the setup works well with a mixture of booths and seats along the bar.
SirDineAlot
As far as sushi trains go, this one is great. Quick, easy, no-fuss service. Good value for money and in an easy to get to location. Not over-engineered or anything crazy. They just do what they do and they do it well.
Juan-Mauricio
Great Japanese food and sushi, reminded me of being back in East Asia again, friendly staff, Japanese chefs, great atmosphere and reasonably good value too, a place that didn't let me down on my return visit, look forward to returning again.

As a fan of the Genki Roll brand, it definitely took me awhile to get around to this store. Nevertheless, I have made it.
Known for their interesting and healthier take of sushi variations by offering brown and black rice, Genki has developed quite a firm following.
The decor is pretty underwhelming based on first impression, but we were greeted by a chorus of welcomes upon entering, which always put a smile on my dial.
Eager to feast, we settled down quickly and grabbed a few dishes from the train. Those included tuna and corn (not my cup of tea, but apparently delicious), salmon seaweed conveyor roll, sea eel California semi roll, soft-shell crab roll, salmon with cream cheese & avocado roll, dragon dynamite roll. All was nice, but felt like some of the dishes wasn't rotating fast enough, hence dryness being the result.
We decided to take advantage of their $3 per plate deal by ordering off the menu. Ipads are installed in each booth to speed up the process. We found that to be an effective novelty.
Aburi salmon roll, spring rolls, udon noodles with chicken and another tuna and corn roll was ordered. The udon was massive! I couldn't finish it even with the help of my friend. It was really nice. So were all the dishes ordered. Compared to my favourite Japanese restaurant, Wasai, I didn't think the aburi hit the mark this time though.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch today, both rolled out of there with a foodbaby. A return is definitely on the cards, especially with the competitive deal they have at the moment.

If you're a japanese lover then you should try this restaurant. So far this is the best sushi bar train..real japanese, you can tell. We usually order the same food: sushi sashimi, pork katsu, grill salmon and salmon avocado roll. Service is fast and the staff are friendly.
The Munchkin
One of the best sushi trains around. Always come back for their aburis-salmon and scallop is the best .The tempura soba is excellent as well.
J.YeePP
Love this sushi place. Modern way of ordering with iPad at each table. Price quite reasonable, not over the top. Staffs are quite friendly from greeting till you leave. Sushi taste good - fresh and a whole variety to choose from. The only thing I did not enjoy was the fried lotus root. The lotus root was overfry that it actually taste bitter. It is not very enjoyable as a snack or nibble. Sushi and handroll wise is good. Udon was good serving. I recommend to share between two if you also wanted to try the sushi. Well seasoned and not too salty. A very enjoyable experience overall. Definitely will come back again.
Terence Sugarpriest
By far the Best sushi train in the centre . Lovely people working there, excellent variety and the best noodle soup with beef ever ,only if they wouldn't open your refreshment ,I find that a bit weird . Other wise my fav sushi bar .
Munchk1n
Great variety, reasonably priced, good service, delicious sushi! Pity that we are from melbourne --- will be back on our next trip to Adelaide!
Valaina
I've heard so many great things about this sushi place, and I was not let down. Staff are friendly, sushi is made fresh and it's so delicious!! It's great that they have an electronic ordering system. Very easy to use and quick to order. I wasn't a fan of fresh salmon.. but then I tried it here and now I'm obsessed!
Laura
Definitely the best sushi train in Adelaide. I could eat the avocado baby rolls forever - they were incredibly tasty and everything is so fresh.
Manuaqui
This sushi bar is giving Sushi train a good competition. Genki not only boasts off a better/fresher sushis but the staff are great as well, very attentive and polite. A bit pricey but worth every penny! Keep it up guys

totally in love with sushi and japanese food!
this one store (bar) is like one of the best in adelaide, especially if you are craving for sushi. the taste of their sushi is superb! and their tempura? oh gosh!! amazing...they have a cute concept where u can just order all what you want through ipad and well..actually all of the customers could take their favorite menu if its on the bar, as their design is like all the chair & sofa is on circle / square -ing the bar.

i tried so many sushi that they offered and they and its all good. from the vegetarian menu with black/brown/red/white rice or just the normal one with salmon, oh god the salmon-mentay (sorry i couldn't remember the name and how it spells) is soooo good!!!

their tempura, esp. sweet potato is to-die-for (maybe because i just love sweet potato that much)

my friend tried their ramen, its okay (i think they use udon not the real ramen noodle), but personally, i prefer their sushi & tempura better.

*this is throwback review*
MeSoHungee
Cheap but no quality. Slightly cheaper to others but portion significantly smaller. Not fresh, very dry sushi rice.

Twice. ....we ate here and twice as good, service staff and food. Will be back again. Keep up the good job everybody. Kim

So tasty and fresh. Cheaper then other sushi places. New favourite, will definitely be back again.

Warm rice, doesnt stick.. F.... Warm rice, doesnt stick..
Fail

Watch out for the iPad. A wide range of sushi, ramen and sashimi either grabbed from the train or freshly made when you order from you table.

Everything we had was delicious and there were a few surprises - french fries, for instance.

Just a tip - be careful if you sit your kids next to the iPad used for ordering. You might find a few things you didn't know you ordered turn up - like the mysterious mango icecream that arrived at the table. Our teenage daughter "liked the look of it". Still, it hardly broke the bank.\

Nice setting, friendly staff, specials and happy hours, a special kids under 10 offer to be had and really as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it. There were four of us, including two teenagers and the bill all up was about $15 each. Or we could have gone big time and ordered wagyu beef and scampi and watched the bill soar.
ARROW
Food is great, waitresses and chefs friendly, the owner is a tool.. The sushi here is prepared well using fine quality ingredients, there is plenty of fresh choices available to ask the chef to prepare and the waitresses are only too helpful to assist you in placing your order.

The owner is just a tool, has no friendly demeanor or hospitality about him. You feel he treats the staff as "his" and they are forced to comply with any direction he carries out.

That aside, the owner is rarely there and the food is really really good. Definitely a must go to place for sushi. ]

Authentic Japanese style. Whenever we traveled to Adelaide,we never miss to dine here. We can enjoy authentic Japanese Tapas here as we used to have in Japan. Some sushi-Neta are bit strange but taste itself are beautiful.

The best sushi bar in Adelaide

"Totemo oishii!" Vast variety of freshly made sushi, portions were generous too. Service was very good and attentive; our green teas were always topped up before we even needed to call on the restaurant staff. Will definitely be going there again.

Delicious! Fresh sushi, clean and inviting atmosphere. Great selection and great service. My favourite sushi in Adelaide. Can't wait to go back again!

Great Food and Service. Generally I am very picky with Japanese food especially sushi. Because as you know there are many people really making bad sushi and ruining the sushi badly.

We were in Adelaide for short stay holiday over Christmas. Found this Sushi bar on the last day before we heading back to Melbourne. They offer variety of sushi and they taste so good. If they open in Melbourne I will certainly give it a go and try it again. (There are many good sushi restaurants in Melbourne, but very few sushi train especially the good one)

Service is brilliant and friendly.
VM
Real respect for sushi!. I love the respect they give to sushi.
it is truly an art and it is definitely shown in this place.
the plates are all fresh! especially the seafood plates... salmon and tuna.. mmmmmm! the price is also very reasonable. will definitely come back!
Shannonn Barry
My new favourite. Licenced Sushi bar on the quieter end of Gouger St with iPad touchscreen ordering at each table and super quick service.
Plenty of options also on the train that were fresh and started from $3.
Dined alone last week and food was fresh and lots of choice. Service was excellent. Brought back 12 girls tonight and feedback was great from all of them.
Although they don't take bookings they cleared 2 tables for us. Meal approx $30 for sake, multiple plates of sushi, sashimi, dumplings and dessert.
Excellent service tonight and vegans also well catered for. Thanks will be back.

Yummy. Came here for lunch and had alburi salmon, Takoyaki, seaweed and squid salad, chicken teriyaki with mayonnaise, etc. The food was tasty and cheap! Won't mind coming back.

I went here for a late lunch and so far, it's not anywhere near as busy as the sushi train down the road. This presents a bit of an issue if you take anything off the conveyor belt as chances are, it has probably been sitting there doing several rounds before you get to it. Otherwise, if you order your sushi fresh (using the iPad system!), it's pretty good. The range can seem somewhat limited on the standard sushi items you'd see elsewhere - I wasn't able to find a white rice avocado and salmon in anything but a hand roll - but very plentiful in the raw section. This probably is more authentic but may put you out if you don't like eating raw seafood. One thing which I found super tasty was the takoyaki - it's probably the best I've had in Adelaide. So fresh, so nice!
Lukus22
Amazing!. I think I can say this is the best Sushi I have ever eaten.
Such good range of food, the staff are amazingly friendly and professional.

I love coming here for lunch!
Jin
The food is not fresh at all!!! Sushi are old, Salmon comes with very bad cut and NOT fresh!!!!Don't order the $6 or $5 noodle soup!!!! Extremely small so don't waste your money!!

Really fresh food. We ordered several items today, most of which were really up to expectations.

1) Aburi salmon - which comes with different extra toppings (e.g. plain, with basil leaves and mayo, or with chilli and garlic). This was my favourite dish of the day. The salmon was fresh, chargrilled to perfection, and the fatty flavour was just amazing. It was a real melt-in-your-mouth experience. We ended up ordering seconds and thirds.

2) Soft shell crab hand roll. The seaweed was fresh and crispy, and the filling really tasty as well. I liked having the option of choosing plain sushi rice, brown rice, or black rice for the hand rolls.

3) Spicy tuna hand roll. As stated above, the seaweed was fresh, and the ingredients were a great combo.

4) Gyoza - crispy on one side, soft and tender skin on the other. I really liked how juicy the filling inside was as well.

5) Cold udon - Nothing special, but ok I guess.

6) Lobster potato salad gunkan sushi - interesting combination of ingredients.

The only disappointment was that some of the noodle dishes we wanted to order were not available for the day.

The staff was attentive and helpful, the food we ordered took about 10-15 minutes to arrive, and overall this was a really great dining experience. Definitely prefer this to sushi train just down the road. It was also really thrilling to see Chef Ikeda

Sold out again?. What's Good:
-High-tech with Ipads on each table to make orders
-Whiting sushi at only $3!
*Tasty nice sticky rice

What's Bad:
-A few items had sold out by 8pm - leaving me leaving half-full (half-hungry)
*Ingredients weren't the freshest

Changes since Opening:
*Other forms of carbs besides sushi e.g. Udon
-Delicious but limited chef's specials sushis
-Printed menu is now outdated

OVERALL: Different variety with quality comparable to other sushi bars. Where to go really depends on your cravings that day!

Yummy.... Very fresh ingredient. Friendly staff. Good quality sake. Value for money.

Don't put your expectation. I was with my fellow mate about 7 people visit Sushi Bar Genki on their special promotion which is $2.90. Its really catch our eyes and just wow when we just got in to it. Very modern design of the sushi bar and good looking! After we got seat, we been told only the sushi on train have promotion of $2.9 a plate, the rest of order will be in full price! Erm... after about 2min with my own inspection, they only put cheap sushi on train! I reckon the most valuable plate was the aburi salmon. Now to the sushi... rice was not right... soggy, just like you eating sticky rice ball instead of sushi. Taste wise is fine, but not above average. When come to ordering our drinks, what we order was just hot green tea for 7, just to mention we order twice, one with waitress 4 cups and one with the pad 3cups, end up come with 8cups. The waitress just a bit confuse with the order, and a guy come to us (I reckon he was manager) his attitude wasn't good but fair, and he was asking us to show him order on the pad, it was 8 cups yeah right. But we only order once with 3 cups! the manager was like it is our fault but that's fine! and asking us to use the pad carefully. Personally I don't like this, just an extra green tea but mess up all our mood. hopefully would get a bit more better after this.

A real Japanese restaurant that uses quality ingredients to produce fresh sushi and kitchen menu. I see genki as a proper Japanese restaurant that happens to have a conveyor belt. Sure sushi takes a bit more time to arrive but every piece tasted good especially nigiri as the rice was formed from scratch by hand and not machines. This alone showed the dedication of the chef to produce exceptional sushi, let alone many other little details that you can notice if you pay attention. It is respectable. Anyway the wait for each order was no more than 5 minutes. With such an extensive menu and given the fact that this is only their second week, I would say they are performing very well actually. I have been to the place more than a few times now and everytime I visit they improved noticeably, even customer service was a lot better also. I urge everyone who were let down by the opening days to return as genki has true potential. I hope genki can show others that Adelaide has the market for good japanese restaurants, good luck.

Worst Sushi Experience Ever. Firstly, If you are after a quick lunch at a real japanese restuarant which is also value for money, please do not come to Sushi Bar Genki. One of the main advantages of a sushi train is that you can sit down and start picking off your favourite plates from the train right from the start. You can't do that here - expect to only find the cheapest items on the menu on the conveyor belt at Genki. Want your favourites? You'll have to order them and wait 10 -15mins for it to arrive.

Another big dissapointment was the service level. I dont expect Michelin star service, but you don't expect the chef to aggressively argue with you when you make a complaint that they got your order wrong - we ordered grilled chilli scallops and were given scallops with mayonnaise, which looked nothing alike. After eventually apologising and promising that they would fix our order, the same mayonaise scallop dish comes back - some idiot has clearly tried to sear it and failed because it's covered in mayo and they've slapped some chilli garnish on top to make it look like the real deal. Maybe try giving your customers a little bit more respect if you want us to come back.

Long story short after having read the previous review on Urban Spoon about Sushi Bar Genki, we thought we would give it a try. It seems we went to a different restaurant because the menu highlights posted in their photos weren't even available when we were there? Fatty tuna? Wasn't there. Sea urchin roll? Not there. Toro and spanner crab? Not there. Overpriced and underwhelmed.

Real Japanese food :). Opening weekend 27th & 28th July 2013 - everything on the conveyor belt is only $2.90! You could expect some skimping on the ingredients or portion sizes but no, the portions were generous and ingredients - fresh and delicious! I only managed to stuff in 6 plates, there were so much variety and the wonderful chefs were continuously placing more fresh dishes on the belt. I could've stayed longer just to see what else they brought out! My favourite was the Aburi Eel (not exactly everyone's taste) - it is definitely one of the best eel I've come across in Adelaide and in my travels outside of Japan. (The best place in Japan for Unaju (Eel on rice) is Narita) I can't wait to go back to Genki and have it again - I wonder if they do an Unaju. Something new to me which I enjoyed was the Chilli squid and seaweed salad - not hot at all, excellently marinated and very tasty. I love salmon! The salmon on the salmon nigiri sushi were so fresh and were NOT sliced so thinly you could see through it!

Walking in, is just like walking into a shop or restaurant in Japan with "Irrashaimase" greeting and Japanese staff with excellent service who are very polite and helpful. Each place at the conveyor belt is neatly set up with ipads for ordering anything you need. There are some tables for larger or smaller parties who do not wish to watch the food go by in front of them. There were lots of Japanese people there, which is a good sign of the reputation this new restaurant.

The menu boasts to have over 150 items and I believe it. There are quite a number of vegetarian plates, for the health/diet conscious there are also sushi made with brown rice or black rice!

This is definitely a place I would visit again.

Sushi Bar Genki is a restaurant that opened towards the end of Gouger Street in Adelaide China town. We love to come here for good, quick, authentic Japanese food. It is a sushi train restaurant but we like this place a lot better than the restaurants named “Sushi Train”. The food here tastes fresher, better quality and larger in portion. It also has one of the best ramens in Adelaide voted among our friends.

cThere's a giant conveyor belt of food in the middle, but all the seats around it are taken. I'm seated along the wall. There's an iPad here, which I'm told I can order from. I can also just grab things from the conveyor belt. I'll see if that's possible. This iPad is mounted to the wall, at a 90° to me. Salmon and avocado roll 6/10 The rice here was fresh, and this was a reasonable combination of a starchy base, and some creaminess and fishy flavour.

Sushi Bar Genki is the latest sushi train style place to open up in Adelaide. The store is run by the grandmaster of sushi, Chef Ikeda. Most of the Japanese restaurants in Adelaide will have owners or chefs that have worked under him.

With my hawk eyes, I immediately spotted this new exterior with colourful menus on the window. Unfortunately I did not have time to try it out but noted that there was a Mon – Thurs special where all sushi plates on the train were $2.90. So I made a mental note to come back within the week.
On The Chopping Board
The majority of chefs/owners of current Japanese Restaurants (Kenji, Manpuku, Wasai, Genki Roll, Takumi, etc) in Adelaide have all been trained and worked under one of Ikeda-San's many restaurants. The popularity of sushi and Japanese food doesn't seem to by dying any time soon, with many restaurants and sushi bars still opening up around Adelaide, so how does this one differ itself from the rest? The interior is bright, spacious and seating is plentiful (60 ) and the sushi tracks are situated in the middle of the entire premises. Head sushi Chef Shozo Ikeda stands proudly in the centre, instructing his Sous Chef and assistants while tapping his fingers on a Nigiri sushi for one of the guests.

The cloudy tonkotsu broth was just packed with pork flavour and slurping this up with melt in your mouth pork belly made me struggle to keep the conversation going. Curly ramen noodles were chewy but still had a bit of bite; garnished with a lovely ramen egg that was a bit sweet and a bit soy AND A BIT RUNNY (am I the only one excited?), juicy bamboo shoots and nori sheets – you can feel how much effort is put in with everything single element tasty and they’re not skimping you on anything. I went during a ramen lunch special time where this came with a side of crispy, juicy fried chicken at no extra cost :D

I have for some weird reason sat on this post for a while, I have since revisited a further three times. Yes, it is that good and yes, it is my new favourite sushi bar. Sushi Bar Genki is owned by none other than the famous Shozo Ikeda who has opened six Japanese food outlets in Adelaide over the years and trained many chefs in Japanese restaurants around Adelaide. Sushi trains are a very popular and well received concept today full of temptation, visual stimulation, watching your food made fresh and quick service. My first impression was a clean and bright store with high morale friendly staff. Next my eyes were drawn to the state of the art touch panel ordering system. I thought that was a fantastic idea because every menu item came with a picture. Also, you didn't have to wait for something to come around the or even get on the conveyor belt. Just push a button to place your order and they will bring it to you. This restaurant definitely demonstrated Japanese efficiency. The menu i

I’m not sure what took us so long to get here but I’m glad we finally did. Sushi Bar Genki (same peeps as Genki Roll in David Jones) is on Gouger Street, on the ‘other’ side of Morphett Street close to Matsuri. I’m telling you, it’s the must go-to ‘sushi train’ in Adelaide, and we think it’s better than our trusty favourite of Sushi Train! Front signage, touch screen menus, self serve pickled ginger and soy sauce at the ready. They’ve implemented ipad/touch screen menus on each table for our disposal as we tap tap tap away at the menu and order our favourite dishes and beverages at our finger tips. There are sooooo many aburi salmon and scallop topping options (my favourite) that I wanted to try all of the ones available. That would have been a meal in itself if I ordered from the aburi category alone. Mmmmm~ Their menu is huge with a heap of variety ranging from sushis, sashimis, nigiris, hand rolls, tapas, noodles, salads and desserts. There are even options of brown rice and black r
