The sticky date pudding is to die for . The environment is perfect and mysterious. They serve real teas and not tea bags . I love the fact that they are open till late . Just love it
Enjoyed a upstairs warm and cosy private area for two. Initially quiet with pleasant background music but became a little more noisy as more groups joined. The Baileys hot chocolates hit the spot complemented by German apple cheesecake and Chocolate lava cake. A very enjoyable evening.
semi-regular visitor to spats, great place to take a date or a laid back catch up with friends.
food is consistently good. not awesome but above average. their tea selection is great. the menu has not been changed in several years and there are no specials. i'm pretty sure ive ordered everything on there at least once. prices are slightly expensive for some menu items for the quantity of food received, i'm looking at you salt n pepper squid.
one great thing i've found about spats is that they can make you something that not on the menu if its easy for the kitchen to prepare. sort of a like a mix n mash and make your own. just need to be descriptive in telling them what you want.
staff are friendly, know the menu well and helpful with choices. i've always received what I ordered. unfortunately service is consistently slow. i suspect there is a bottleneck with the kitchen.
some nights get busy so its best to book to avoid disappointment.
I love this little romantic place!!!!! Every thing are perfect! Coffee, steak, dessert are delicious! All the staff are friendly and provide good service. I will come back again! Good time here ! You just can't find another little romantic place at the reasonable price with good coffee , steak and dessert like Spats!!!
This is a great dessert cafe.
There are very limited places in Adelaide where you can go and get a late night coffee/dessert.
Spats definitely holds a romantic feel, perfect if you want to take someone on a date. Or even just to catch up with a few friends. The decor is what makes this place great, the low light, the wallpaper and fixtures make the experience really pleasant.
The menu is extensive, prices aren't to bad. They do have a main menu for dinner options however, most people go for the desserts.
Ordered the sticky date pudding which was nice and moist. Can get a little sickening so don't order a sweet drink as well unless you're good with sweets. The cubicles are dimly lit so great for a little dessert date.
Best crepes in town!!! I love the chicken salad - large portion & delicious... Everything on the menu is good! I love the brothel decors and feel 💁🏻💕 always a great late night eat!
Really great food and service. Found the menus a little difficult to read. Thoroughly enjoyed the apple cinnamon waffles, banana waffles, choc mint smoothie and banana smoothie was one of the best I'd ever had. The chicken volevent was a bit too salty. I love the tea and the Katie & Alice teapots. The decor is also very eclectic but enjoyable with art work for sale and everytime we are seated somewhere different so we spit something new. A very romantic and intimate setting - ideal for couples but still fun with girlfriends. Would love to try the cocktails next.
Living in Adelaide and loving my desserts & coffee....this place has been an institution for me & my friends over the years...especially in Winter...Katie-Anne
This place is all about the vibe. It's so kitsch and moody and quaint. Even if the food is a little dated and some things are overpriced, it's still a fun place to visit.
Love this place! It's always a go 2 late dessert place for me and has been for years. It's cosy yet almost seedy with the red glow but has really kool artwork, knick knacks and is always bustling- I love it. Tonight I brang along a newbie with me and yet again did not disappoint! Shared strawberry crepes w/ Nutella & sicky date pudding- both delicious! Waffles and crepes are my usuals and I really like their housemade scones and hot chocolate in teapots too, though had dessert wine 2nite. Service is always nice too and will continue to come here! 😀👌
A true Adelaide desserts institution. Spats has been one of my favourite late night dessert parlours, with intimate candlelight atmosphere in booths.. It's warming and cosy.

I’d never heard of Spats when my friend suggested we stop in, but was happy to roll with it given how similar our tastes are in dining venues. Spats announces itself as ‘Adelaide’s first and finest dessert lounge’, and not having a point of comparison, I’m inclined to agree. The store is wonderfully cozy, with dim lighting (chandeliers, candles!), red walls and velvet drapes creating a sense of quiet buzz that is
My recent visit to Spats was good as usually is the case.
Quite a romantic setting (if you can ignore the stained pillows).
The ice cream cake was divine, would definitely return for this alone.

dessert time with friends!
we tried tiramisu and lava cake. it taste good - moist, balance, just super yum!! the ambience is okay, but i don't know it feels like its gonna be perfect if you go on a date or something. but, having a good time with your girl friends never been wrong.
Just had a lovely evening with friends at Spats Cafe. A light meal and deserts. The decor is very appealing with multiple seating options, most promoting an intimate feeling for the dinners.
We had a sharing platter, dips and koftas. The food was well presented and prepared. The dips had a range of items to dip into the dips with, that added extra flavour and textures to the standard dips plate. I enjoyed the dips but they were not to everyone taste (more for me). The koftas were very good, the salad and dipping sauce complemented the koftas well.
With the meal I had a pot of Russian Caravan tea which I thoroughly enjoyed.
For desert I had baklava and Turkish coffee, yum. The others had a range of deserts all of which they enjoyed, the favourite was the chocolate lava cake.
The cafe is very popular so either a booking or the patience to wait outside is important.
Overall a great place for that snack or desert, a place I highly recommend.
Loved the Turkish coffee ,loved the baklava plus there is actually a coffee and desert place in this city that has an actual waiter and you don't have to wait in a line to order your coffee as you are in jail trying to get your lunch .... The only thing ... Guys you don't need to have exposed that little white heater there ,first there is no way to heat up that place ,second it reminds me a bathroom and please take off the mascarade decorations ,Halloween is over .
Great classic spot for a late night dessert or meal run! My regular order is definitely their signature fruit salad. It may sound simple and boring but it's far from that! Recently tried the muscles and I'd definitely recommend for a quick tapas style nibble for all lovers of butter and garlic! Wish it came with more bread to dip in the sauce though!
awesome! little pricey but great for a night out. be sure to book because they can be booked out! but the service is great and they go above and beyond to accommodate.
This place never disappoints. One of the best place to get dinner, dessert, coffee or a cup a tea! They're also licensed which is a bonus for those who would like a fancy cocktail or mock tails for the non-alcholics! The ambience is lovely. Friendly staff. Great food. Highly recommend! If you haven't been, definitely get on it!
Love this place! Cosy and perfect for dates or girls catchup. Menu is extensive, I always get the brandy snaps with strawberries. Their strawberries are always sweet and fresh! Coffee and tea range is extensive and very good. Staff are pretty good at knowing when I want to order or just be left alone to chit chat.
Perfect in winter for a late night dessert and coffee.
Simply Amazing. Fantastic atmosphere, mouth watering food! If your in Adelaide you have to try this place.
The desserts are out of this world, but they also serve mains. Always come here with my family.
We love Spats!. Spats is a warm, cosy, inviting little coffee house that has been my go-to late night destination for years. Its decor exerts a vibrant fusion of burlesque-edwardian-Turkish style and the menu presents with food equally as diverse. Spats is perfect for beating the winter blues- my friends love the Matcha (green tea) Latte, or go for a delicious soup (we love the potato and leek, and would trade our soul for the Lentil soup recipe) with toasty Turkish garlic bread. In the really cold months we frequent Spats about two or three times a week and they are always happy to see us. After making a few returns the staff will treat you like family, but from what I've observed service is just as exceptional to new customers.
Spats is also amazing for a late summer night cool off, to chill out and chat for a few hours. Situated in Hyde Park, it's the perfect place to indulge and eat big before a nice work-off walk around the suburb to gawk at the pretty houses. I'd recommend any of the 'Crunch' iced drinks (best flavours are Pineapple, Chai Latte, Chocolate). Living within walking distance means I love to get behind a couple of Bailey's Iced Chocolates.
When it comes to eating you are spoiled for choice and be sure to binge; highlights on the light and main meals pages are the Salt n Pepper Squid (super crunchy with a flavour explosion), Tasting Plate (definitely to share as it is a generous serve of everything), and classic wedgies. Took my great grandma here and she LOVED the prawn +avocado open toasted sandwhich.
Desserts on the new menu are super quirky and theres a bit of everything. Spats has kept its classic waffles and crepes and added some weird and wonderful new inventions- such as the completely reimagined brandy snaps which comes out in the form of towers stuffed with cream and ice cream. The Dessert Pizza is also amazing with a honeycomb touch (provided you have company and are hungry). My absolute favourite is the Chocolate Lava Cake. It's to die for. My friends get food envy when it comes out and dutches out the room with the smell of rich pudding chocolateyness. It's cool to see some vegan and gluten free options on the menu too- the raw mocha cake stands out as a tasty one. The younger members of the Spats family have taken control recently, giving it a breath of new life that is really apparent to customers - with renovations, artwork, menu changes as well as updates to the payment system such as split bills and paywave.
Come here HUNGRY and ready to embrace the atmosphere and experience- Spats is an Adelaide icon with a cult following for a reason, and us long time customers will laugh at you if you ask for the lights to be turned up or if you are snappy at the waiting staff. Relax and enjoy the food + culture mashup Spats will throw at you.
Friendly accommodating service. All 3 desserts and drinks were delicious. Great atmosphere. Spats is Adelaide's BEST lounge cafe. Can't wait to return to try more yummy desserts from the new menu.
Great Adelaide Establishment!!. Have been coming here for years!!
I love the new menu!! The place has been there for many years and is an Adelaide institution!!
Constantly evolving in business is important and these guys are always improving!
Awesome!. Despite all the bad reviews, we had a great time! Awesome atmosphere, awesome food and a cute Italian waiter! Definitely coming here again - dont miss it because of the reviews, try it for yourself!
Banana Waffle. We came here more than 10 times, the only thing we hate was waiting too long time. The banana waffle looked amazing with all colour decoration, lots of banana so yummy.
Good place to warm up the relationship.
Cool place. I have to say I have always loved Spats. Great little spot for a quiet dessert and coffee.
After reading some reviews here about a cake bought in, my opinion is cake is a celebratory thing, not a filling thing. Its normal to bring a cake to a place and even have the staff prepare it and bring it out with candles and a song. as long as you order a reasonable amount from their menu.. I understand there could be lost revenue and a table that could be used for someone else.. But Spats is a comfy place and not a fast food production line... I havent ever brought a cake to a restaurant... but if the occasion called for it, I could just have easily have made this mistake..
Still a big fan though. Amazing coffee and great desserts!
One of my fav late night coffee places for a real treat. Great service. Speccy presentation of drinks & desserts & tasty too! Not far from the city too so it's convenient if you've been for dinner in the city & are looking for somewhere to move on to. Open late as well.
I love Spats and their brilliant desserts. I love their quaint booths and I love their welcoming staff. Bringing in cake bought elsewhere, even if I supplied the knife, plates, spoons and serviettes would be insulting to such a beautiful dessert establishment. Staying and eating brought in cake means new customers can't sit down=lost revenue. It is simply about sustainability, not just about profitability. Only baby food should be brought in, and anything else should be discussed with management beforehand. It's only courtesy and I don't want to see the iconic Spats disappear from King William Rd due to lost revenue. My humble opinion of course.
I only like the brandy snap basket and strawberry waffles. Always will be my favorite desert place.
Yes.. The prices are definitely getting towards the expensive side but I definitely think it's worth it, if it were priced any higher and I would have to reconsider. My favorite would definitely have to be the chocolate crunch and caramel waffles, however I think the caramel waffles would be better with the whole waffle instead of half, still very delicious and I cannot complain about the chocolate crunch. Spats has got to be one of my favorite places to go with a few people on a late night to just sit down relax and enjoy some quality food.
You must try the chocolate crunch at the least!
Quirky but cosy atmosphere with couches and booths. Had to line up to get a seat but was very worth the wait. Coffee and dessert.
Great atmos and lighting. Comfy seats. Nice place to chill out
Very yummy! Different atmosphere, cosy and dark but tidy, perfect for an intimate night out. I had the strawberry Crepes, actually delicious. Beautiful cream and ice cream with fresh strawberries. The waffles and brandy snap basket are also amazing
Spats Coffee House. Anyone that doesn't enjoy the Spats experience is probably a stuck up snob. It's one of my most favourite dining experiences. The ambience is warm with dim lighting and an overall feeling of intimacy with their dining booths. Couples have the privacy to express affection while dining on amazing food. I loved the garlic prawn meal, I loved the brandy snap, ice cream and strawberries dessert, and the Vienna coffee was amazing. The waiters were polite and discreet (allowing us our privacy) and the food didn't take long at all. We stayed for 4 hours. In that time, there was an endless flow of mostly young couples coming in and out, mostly for coffees and dessert, but Spats is worthy for the meals also. The fact we can chill out in a booth until midnight on weekdays is another plus. Just an overall fantastic place. We've just booked our 2nd visit, and it will probably become 'our' restaurant.
Get the chocolate mousse!. We love going to Spats for our girls nights out, the coffee and desserts are amazing. There are lots of other dessert bars around now but for service, price, vibe and range of desserts, Spats wins hands down. As a coffee lover I am really impressed with the lovely range of coffee for one choices. The chocolate mousse is also the best that I have tried in Adelaide.
A must visit.... I am a huge fan of Spats and Elephant Walk. Both their desserts are quite similar but Spats has more of a dinner menu, though not very extensive. The atmosphere is romantic and cosy especially if you get a booth seat upstairs. Don't expect a speedy service because this place is to chill and relax so make sure you bring some good company to chat to while you wait. Desserts are always very well presented. My favs are banana waffles and freezomint. Reservations are only made for dinners and not desserts. So if you've come for just dessert, sometimes there is a wait.
I'm A huge fan of Spatz!!! The sweet menu is to die for!! Banana crepes-YUM!!!!!!! Butane sure u book or b prepared to wait coz it's always packed-even during the week. Worth the wait tho. Mmmmmmm
Love going here with the gals 4 a chat in their intimate, cosy booths whilst enjoying delicious desserts
Satisfied. Had the strawberry waffle. Not THAT big however bloody delicious. I would recommend the double decker if your hungry! The chocolate mint coffee was really good and I suggest to have it black without whipped cream
Amazing desserts and great tea/coffee. Open late, often there is a wait for a table but worth it. Be warned they don't allow split bills so bring small change/notes if going in a group
Delicious waffles, great service and a quirky atmosphere
Late night chill out place. This place is one of Adelaide's best kept secrets. Cool, laid back and very retro. Tables are lit with dim lanterns and the upstairs chairs are squishy and comfortable. My friends and I often come here for coffee and dessert after going to a restaurant. The food is mostly overpriced but it's really the atmosphere we come here for. If you want to try some place new, give Spats a try.
Try the strawberry waffles!
>.< mmmm. Spats is by fare my fav place to go. there food is amazing and oh so worth the 2 hr drive to get there.
Spats Cafe has long been a favourite late night destination for Adelaidians to frequent. The family have recently decided it was time for a well earned revamp of the King William Road restaurant and have recreated their menu to cater to a wider, more discerning crowd. The classics have been given a fresh twist and are accompanied by an appealing range of gluten free, organic, vegan & vegetarian options to appease every diner. You won’t just be tempted by sweet delights; the cafe has an impressive selec
Spats Café is a place of special memories for your reviewer. He first took his Lady Myrtle Marmaduke there on their first date 20 years ago. The Café is much like it was then. It is a place of great character and charm and perfect for intimate coffees an
Nice after dinner treat. Nice and cosy place. Staff were very polite and didn't need to wait long for our order
This place is an Adelaide icon, it’s been around forever. The chance are your parents have once went here. It’s open late every night and has a really authentic feel, mind you that’s probably because they haven’t changed the decor in that long. There was only one guy working when I went in late on a weekday, he was super helpful and service was great. COVID-SAVE, the guy made sure we all checked in and booths are relatively private.
Such a beautiful place! Love the aesthetic and the mood lighting. Definitely a great place for a quiet date. The booths definitely create privacy. I love that food and drinks are available, highly recommend this place.
The dim lighting and romantic feel makes this place for me, along with the jazz music and cosy booths. Definitely worth a try with your partner or one or two friends. Such an intimate setting while you enjoy a hot or cold beverage and maybe even dessert.
One of the best dessert place for my family.
My kids love this place.
Nice ambiance, friendly staff, good service and most important food is yum... :)
Highly recommended dessert place.
