Super reasonable, late night, delightful quantity, well lit up, always crowded, super fast service! Literally everything one can ask for of a restaurant! Also serves beers and other spirits! Nothing more to say I keep going regularly!
Went with the Hubby on a date.
I had the chicken with duck on rice.
Hubby had the duck and crispy pork on rice.
Both dishes were yummy, though the chicken was a little bit of a let down, but the temperature of the beer made up!!
The price was good and food was tasty - made for a lovely & not so expensive date lunch.
True rating is probably a 3 but they get a 4 because I've been going there for years and it's a bit of a Chinatown institution for me. Food is big and cheap and tasty enough to eat with gusto. Service is actually okay although over the years it's been a bit mixed.dont expect overly attentive service. It's a fast paced environment. Cleninless and decor is in keeping with that old school chinatown vibe before "fitouts" became a thing. I don't mind it at this price point and think it adds character. Pan fried dumplings and vegetarian laksa was the go for me but not at the same time as serves are huuugggggeee. Allow at least 20/25 min for pantries dumpies.
Now straight up, this review is not based on the service, or the decor, although come here enough times, and you’ll find this contributes to the charm.
This review is based on the scale of cheap and fast Chinese restaurants. The sort where the food comes out in strange orders, and the tattered and stained menu hasn’t changed in years.
It hasn’t changed, because why should it? The food portions are generous, the flavours delicious, and the soy sauce plentiful.
The shallot cakes are a must.
We have been loyal customers to BBQ City for years, and regularly return for our quota of salt, MSG and just plain delicious Chinese.
Most of the food is pretty simple and basic, and each dish does not a have a lot of components. I tried 2 dishes so far - crispy chicken and rice which came with a large proportion of chicken, a huge mountain of rice that covered the whole dinner plate, and a bit of steamed box choy. I also tried the roasted duck noodle soup and as the name suggests, the dish just had the roasted duck and some noodles in a clear broth, with not much else.
That being said, the quality of the food is above average, especially considering its cheap prices. Even though my descriptions of the dishes I had might sound too basic, the crispy chicken and the roasted duck were exceptional and so delicious that the dishes did not need any additional components.
Might suggest avoiding weekend nights though, if you want to take your time to enjoy your food. The staff is not too friendly to begin with, but when you stay for too long on a weekend night, they become more unpleasant.
Food is pretty nice and the prices are good for what you get. Can get pretty busy also can get pretty cramped depending on where youre sitting.

Excellent value for money excellent service great to get a few plates and share amongst friends. Bbq meats galore salt and pepper squid and teriyaki chicken with one large bowl of fried rice to share is all you need for a feast
Realised that having gone here for years I haven't ever actually reviewed it. Well I have, on a blog, but that was some years ago, so it's time to have another try.
First of all let's address a few things. If your idea of a great restaurant depends on a delightful ambience with happy smiling waiting staff attending your every need then you will be puzzled by BBQ City.
The style is "delaminex" rather than "deluxe" and the service is, shall we say, to the point. They come to the table, you say what you want. They go away and then bring back your food. They aren't there for conversation or pleasantries. They have a job. They do it.
The place isn't a "shall we linger over Port and coffee" sort of deal. They operate on high turn over of tables. If you stay long enough someone will put a plate of orange segments on your table. This looks like a sort of generous gesture as a way of finishing the meal, but it is, I suspect, more a passive aggressive way of telling you to move out.
However, the food is the thing that brings all the boys to the yard and causes line ups on a Friday night. As the name suggests the place does barbecued meats and they hang proudly in the window drawing people in. Duck. Chicken, Roast Pork, Barbecue Pork. All done beautifully and just so tasty. I've been lucky enough to be sitting in the restaurant when the head chef carried a tray of a half dozen whole roast ducks from the kitchen through to the front window and it is a triumphal procession. Their barbecue meats are available either with or without rice in various combinations at prices that seem very low for what you get and they're also for sale by weight to take home. It's become something of a Christmas tradition for my family to buy one of their ducks for the Christmas meal and it's a wonderful thing!
The other foods on the menu are pretty good too. Crispy fried beef, fried dumplings, duck with noodles, Wonton Noodle Soup, Salt and Pepper Eggplant have all been favourites and I have a secret hankering for their beef with tomato on rice.
So ultimately, if you're looking for a get in, get out, Chinese Meal that tastes good and costs a fair price and you don't want radiant smiles and sunshine from the service then do not hesitate.
Good quick feed if in the mood for chinese - loooove their hand made duck noodles, they also have great pan fried dumplings. Comes off pretty standard but best of its kind on gouger ive found overall. Fair prices for good food, staff are quick and hard working
Finally got the chance to go to chinatown and after peeping at few restaurants along the way finally we got our eyes on this mouth watering BBQ meats that hanging and calling us to eat them. Starving and tired, we ordered:
1. Combination bbq rice 4/5: all the meats (roast duck, crispy roast pork and bbq pork) were very delicious. They were perfectly cooked and none of them were dry.
2. Crispy roast pork 5/5: superbbbbb....skin were crispy, meat moist and not overcooked
3. Sweet and sour pork with rice 4/5: Love this one too. Yummy battered pork pieces with perfect sweet sour sauce. It's typical Cantonese style dish.
4. Stir fry mix vegs 4/5: everything on that plate were very fresh and they perfectly cooked them....not overdone so the vegs still have the crunchiness.
5. Seafood beancurd soup 4/5: fresh seafood, soft tofu, good broth...what more can you ask for....
Service was very good too. Price was affordable for good food around the city.
If you are after a reasonably cheap meal at great quality look no further. Just know that the service is average and the restaurant is always busy. Despite this it's still one of Adelaide's staple Chinese restaurants.
Omg I love BBQ city, if you are there get SPICY CRISPY BEEF! Flavour pop in your mouth and great place to share food and have a family dinner! Staff are very attentive and overall a great experience great buzz in the store too!
This is not the place you for a fine dining experience, however, if your looking for Asian style BBQ meats. This is the exact place you need to go to.
BBQ City has been my favourite destination whenever I crave for Crispy Roast Pork and Salt/ Pepper Squid. This place has been one of my favourite Chinese restaurants for a number of reasons. The food are cheap, delicious and worth the wait and money. The different dishes that I have tried are so good that I always end up ordering the same dishes and I don't even need to check the menu. However, for today's experience I have to acknowledge that the service they have provided was below average. I had to tell the waiters/waitress 3 times when I asked for a glass of table water. Also, they have served our dishes but they have forgotten to provide the utensils, cups and bowls which are all essential for eating at this restaurant. I'm not always fussy about customer service but this time it reached to the point where I have to write a review. Staff were also quite rude, incompetent and awkward.
🍴Must try(s) : Salt/pepper squid, famous roast pork, chicken and creamy mushroom, garlic prawns
🍴Positive(s): Good food with good prices
🍴Negative(s): Bad Customer Service, Rude And incompetent staff
Have had the roast duck and sweet and sour pork from here, and I must say, both were quite tasty! The only downside to the pork dish was its presentation (which is kind of expected by Chinese restaurants like these) and the fact that most of the pork pieces were fat and I got more capsicum than pork.
great food, great prices. All the dishes are really good, nothing you can't be happy with. They need to sort out their hygiene though, toilets are outright disgusting and rarely cleaned. They paint them once a year and that's the only time they look clean!
This used to be one of it not my favourite places to get a quick and delicious meal. I've tried many things on the menu from the seafood laksa to the spicy crispy beef and everything is full of flavour and really tasty. However I have not been able to bring myself to go back since I heard about the cleanliness issues and fines this restaurant has received. It's sad because I really really loved BBQ City and while I never personally got sick eating here, it is hard to ignore what I've seen in the news. Maybe one day I will go back as I do greatly miss this place.
Brilliant food, best BBQ pork, duck etc, everything else is good too, however go here for the BBQ fare! Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the service is absolutely appallingly! But who cares you came here for the food!
We had the unfortunate issue of being in Adelaide's Chinatown, during the Chinese New Year Sunday night dinner time. Some restaurants had special events and were packed. BBQ City had customers, but wasn't as busy as others. We ordered stir fried mixed vegetables, roast pork with rice, Vietnamese spring rolls, stir fried beef with rice noodles, and beef with black bean sauce and rice. The customer service wasn't helpful and a little curt, but the meal was assembled quickly within 10 minutes. The meal was decent and was filling, despite the low cost to feed 5 people with leftovers.

Decent serving whenever we are in town and crave for some rice. Succulent roast pork and duck. Must pair with chilli oil.
Watch out for dirty glass and occasional cockroaches on the wall.
Over the years, I have either alone or with family, dined in this eatery for both lunch and dinner. The consistency has been stable and the roast duck good. Lately, it has become saltier (or is it my taste?) The decor is simple and the food served without much delay. Being Cantonese myself, my favorites are: roast duck and char siew rice; beef fried noodle with black been sauce; clay pot towfu; steamed kai lan in oyster sauce - and the daily specials which vary from time to time. All in all a simple, economical dining experience. Customer service is nothing special and brisk. If you spoke Cantonese, waiters may warm up to you. After all it is Cantonese style (Hongkong and South China) and by tradition a complimentary house soup is served when requested (called Lai Tong). There is the standard range of bottled beers and wine by the glass or by the bottle etc. The other great advantage is that it is open daily till the early morning hours. And, around midnight there is special porridge for a late supper. Compared with the last reviewer, I have never been hit by any hygiene scar (yet!) :-)
This has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants out there. food comes out pretty quick and everything is reasonably priced. Always busy when I go in there which has to mean the food is always good
We go to Bbq city regularly. It is our go to restaurant when we take visitors out for dinner. The food is always fresh and delicious. I love their sizzling steak Chinese style and the Bbq pork. Staff are efficient and happy to help.
I really enjoy this Hong Kong style bbq restaurant which serves all the cha chaan teng favourites.. The BBQ duck, and roast pork is particularly nice here. Also great for takeaways!
Being going to this place faithfully for the past 5 years. This is the place where you can get authentic Peking duck, as you might have seen various roasted ducks and chickens hanging by their necks on metal hooks on display to the public.
Numerous people of the Zomato community who gave negative reviews say that the service is pathetic. In some cases, this cannot be denied as the restaurant does sometimes have that one gloomy waiter, but this cannot over-shadow how good the food is, and the efficiency of the service overall.
My favourite are of course, their speciality roasts of duck, chicken and pork. The Roast Duck with Rice (143.) or the Roast Pork (142.) with Rice always satisfies; the price is relatively cheap and the meat is crispy and tender. Another one is the Roasted Duck Noodle soup (167.), it's a really good deal for the price you pay and the food they serve you.
BBQ city is a great place to dine if you want some delicious and filling Chinese dishes. Décor isn't that good, but seriously, who gives.
AMAZING! The whole meal was amazing.
The staff were wonderful - it was all brilliant.
The Salted fish fried rice was delicious.
Prices were great.
We will be back again!!
Their roast Pork is THE BEST! And the price doesn't really pricy. Even Thou sometimes the waitress are not friendly, but so far we get used to it,Lol.. Need to try and experience the tasty food!
If you haven't tried this place, do yourself a favour and get there. It is a little gem. Must eat dishes are green beans in XO and BBQ assorted meats (BBQ pork, roast duck). Food is cheap, served extremely quick and super tasty. It's always busy but table waits aren't long. The place is pretty frantic but all part of the BBQ city experience!
If you want a good cheap eat and tasty food with value for money this place is good. The dishes are a pretty good size too but I found they were a bit too oily. Noodles and dumplings are good though,
Very nice and fresh roast pork. Had the roast pork and roast duck on rice. The roast pork was so tender, not too fatty and the skin was crispy. Also love the sweet soy sauce they put on the rice. Good value for money, fast and delicious.

BBQ City has been a stalwart of ours for years with tasty and affordable Chinese cuisine. The World Loves Adelaide drools over the ducks on display in the front window. Come here to dine solo, with a group or for that special occasion. This is casual dining with menu options posted on the walls. The Duck with rice is simple but rewarding and is our "go to" dish. Or go the Roast pork! We always grab a pot of Green tea to cut through any fatty meat.
BBQ Pork on Noodles Or Rice. Friendly and dynamic service all business of the place as well . Our food came out really quickly and both the meat and vego options were flavoursome. Loved the satay marinated chicken too, They have a great and affordable selection of drinks.& food is priced well. Would definitely recommend
Soccer mum. To the stupid soccer mum that ate here today, I had to listen to you whine and complain to the waiter about how cold your Soy Sauce Chicken was. You were telling the waiter that your food should have been hot, cooked fresh and that it was appalling.
first off, soy sauce chicken is a cold dish... second, the waiter there had no idea what the hell you were saying, as she could not speak English. You made my day, when I saw that look upon your face, when she took the food away and microwaved the crap out of it, (in front of you) and gave it back.
please don't tell a Chinese person this is how it's supposed to be, if you have no idea, it was offensive.
Btw to all other people, come here for the food, don't expect great service or even proper hygiene.
delicious!
One of my favourites. The staff work very hard, be realistic: you shouldn't expect silver service here. I recommend the BBQ duck (salty and delicious), San Tong chicken, sweet and sour pork. I am never disappointed with the food here and enjoy the bustling atmosphere.
Mmm BBQ Pork. The service here is crap. Just have the BBQ pork and don't ask questions.
Great value for money and fun atmosphere! Quality is a little less compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area however the dishes are pretty cheap- average $12. Also good wine list! The staff were very friendly and helpful although I think they could use a bit more training in serving!!
BBQ city... Where do you begin! It's like your best mates plain Jane sister, you never take notice until that one day, after the experience you just want to keep coming back!
The three choice BBQ with rice is my choice most times at $12.50 you can't go wrong!
The best value for money on the Gouger stretch.
Willo gives BBQ Giddy a big thumbs up
Good food outweighs the average service. Been there numerous times abd enjoyed the duck of course, the bbq menu and the chinese brocolli cooked with garlic. Delish!
Best Chinese BBQ in Adelaide - none can compare. Be it the meat, noodle, sauces, veg - BBQ City trumps in taste, freshness, texture, presentation. The photos speak for themselves. Didn't try their other menu items; but ain't going nowhere else in Adelaide for Chinese BBQ!
MmmDuck. Cheap and good ftw! I usually go for the duck or bbq pork on noodles or rice. It's good either way. They're quite busy but wait times aren't too bad after ordering considering how packed it usually is. Service can be a bit grumpy sometimes unless you're a regular.
Cheap and cheerful. Stumbled on BBQ City around lunch time and had roast duck on rice. I think $9.50. Fast service, good and inexpensive food.
The worst service imaginable, usually rude to customers. But we keep coming back because the food is amazing and cheap
Belly full of belly.. After many years, still haven't found pork belly and good as here. Generous portions and great service, in and out in a flash. Wouldn't try and have a two hour meal here though, you receive the bill quickly after finishing your last mouthful.
Highly recommend their Hokkien shredded duck noodles also.
Yummo!! Whenever I come to town for a bigger bite than a snack I come here. U get what u pay for. Never get a big bill, always more than satisfied (takeaway box pls!) and fast delivery of food. I am hongkong Chinese and sick of western style Chinese in suburbia at double the price too! My faves- Singapore noodles, kway teow and rice with beef and soupy eggs.
You might have to queue for BBQ!. Another fantastic Gouger Street dining experience! For a busy Friday night, just happened to be wandering down Gouger Street looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon BBQ. The menu posted on the window met the requirements for the night. 1. Must have BBQ food. 2. Must have Duck. 3. Must have dumplings!
Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner! Walked in and the place was packed which was a good indication that the food must be good. Were told by our waiter that we would have to wait five minutes for a table and true to their word we were ushered to a table. For a very noisy and busy place, the service was impeccable.
We ordered the BBQ Duck, BBQ Pork, Roast Pork, Sweet n Sour Pork and Peking Dumplings and Satay Beef for Entree. Our orders came out quick and were steaming hot. Everything was delicious! (Have I told you that I'm obsessed with duck now?). The only down side was that they forgot our order of singapore noodles and that we had so much food we couldn't eat it all! Luckily, we were able to take it home! Definitely want to come here again and sample other deliciousness from the menu as the prices are quite cheap for big servings!
You guys want to see what Hong Kong is like sometimes? BBQ city is close, just imagine the room with more yelling.
Go there for work dinners without fail.
Well priced, no-nonsense Chinese food.. I've been to BBQ City a couple of times now. It is simple, straightforward Chinese food served quickly and cheaply. It's not the greatest food in the world (for instance, the last time I had BBQ pork, it was a little dry ... but I wonder if I went on a bad day?), and the atmosphere feels like a small food court, but overall it's pretty solid. The fried rice is especially good.
If you want a good Chinese feed in a hurry, BBQ City is one of the better options in Chinatown.
We go here for the 3 choice meats with rice :) tasty and good value
Fantastic food!. BBQ City has great food and simple service. Consistently scrumptious! Recommend salt & pepper eggplant and vege dumplings.
Good, Fast, Value. You can't complain when you walk in without a reservation on a Friday night, are seated within a few minutes, fed three dishes and walkout $30 poorer, but enriched for the experience and the food. I'm not! I've worked in and around Gougher Street for 20 years and last Friday was my first experience of the City. I must say that the duck, etcetera hanging in the window has put me off in the past, but now I'm wondering why. Of course, we didn't drink booze, so maybe the price is a bit understated, but the food was pretty good for the price considering we had a few softies.
We had the duck fried rice (great), deep-fried pork spare ribs (Peking style, so sweet) and green beans with XO sauce. The latter was meant to have a mince with it, but if it did, it was well hidden. Doeidn't matter though, because it had a tarty belchan flavour which was a nice contrast to the beans.
We were in and out in 40 minutes as the tables turned-over regularly. The service was irrelevant. It was not hard to get what you wanted (eg, fresh chilli) within a few moments of looking up for a waiter.
Again, another keeper.
Good Chinese at a good price.. Always look for an eatery that has a good patronage and this one is certainly a popular place. Why? Well simply, it serves up great food at a great price. Most dishes are $9-$12. Expect to wait for a table as this place gets busy. Getting their before 7pm would be an ideal time but if you do have to wait 5 minutes or so it's worth the wait.
You cant go past a serve of the BBQ Pork, the Roast Pork, or the Roast Duck ( in that order ) or perhaps try a BBQ 3 Assorted mix of them all! Great price, great food, terrible service but the best BBQ Pork I've ever had makes up for that!
Best duck. Love the food here, eat here frequently and it is always good, duck is very tasty, all the meats are good. Best BBC around, full of flavour and the salt and pepper bean curd is lovely and lightly crispy. Have never had a problem with service as staff are always obliging, if you take the place as it is, which is very casual, and enjoy the food which tastes great and is good value, you shouldn't be disappointed.
Best Chinese in Adelaide?. The food is always excellent: recommend the shallot pancakes, roast duck & pork with shallots & ginger. The service is average & the place doens't look flash but you'll get amazing food at great prices. Always a favourite.

Love it! I could eat here every day! In fact I pretty much do :)
Alway's a Winner. How do they sell food this good, that cheap?
Love BBQ city. Cheap eats, get what you pay for on some dishes but some others are super tasty. Salt and pepper tofu, best on the street.
Cheap food, don't expect too much though. I had shredded roast duck with vermicelli noodles and it was good a little oily. $1 for green tea. Don't go if you want a fancy meal.
Fast and furious!. This place is great for fast, good food. try the pork with handmade noodle and the beef brisket hot pot. mind the decor, its been the same since they opened! busy and reliable.
Authentic and Affordable. This is probably the home of the best roast duck and BBQ crispy skinned pork in town.
If you dont like BBQ dishes, there is a full menu to boot. Our regular dishes are the Salt & Pepper Eggplant, the Tofu Hotpots, and Green Beans with Mince pork.
Service is prompt but somewhat casual, in a typical Asian style as you might see in a local HK or Malaysian restaurant. The teapot is constantly topped up.
Get there early on Friday nights are face the queue to get a table. They also do takeout and around dinner time dont be put off by the takeout queue blocking the entrance .
Food is very tasty and cheap.
Ambience is very liveley but the decor is spartan.
Service is casual, efficient and quick.
Delicious Soya Sauce Chicken. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants on Gouger St, but if you fancy Soya Sauce Chicken for lunch then you simply can't beat BBQ City, delicious and cheap ($7.50). Yes, the service is average but I pay for good food not good service.
Supper time. This place is noisy, always full and staff there not the most friendliest. these are all perfect ingredients needed to form a typical great chinese restaurant. we go here a few times for supper just to pig out but have found that recently quality has dropped.
Yes well you certainly don't go there for the service or the ambience, unless grimy laminex is your thing. but look past the hustle and the nasty fluorescent lighting and what you've got is the best - and arguably cheapest - chinese around. it's great value and always happy and bustling - the very definition of cheap and cheerful. don't miss it.
There's nothing special about the service or the decor at BBQ City. It's pretty standard for a casual Chinese restaurant. Value however is excellent. If you eat here on a weekday for lunch (Mon-Fri 11am-4pm, excluding public holidays), the lunch specials menu has about 20 different choices for an absolute bargain price of $7.50 each. That's cheaper than most food court prices and definitely a step up in quality.
