Review Chef Dong - Adelaide

David Maddison
I found a new favourite spot for yum cha in Adelaide at Chef Dong. It’s a quiet, suburban restaurant that you could easily drive pass but make an effort to drop in for brunch on the weekend. Piping hot plates served as you order from the menu. Fresh fillings and ingredients make you keep ordering more. Friendly service and decently priced

Great Chinese restaurant, tables were tightly packed and full, staff were turning people away lining up outside who hadn’t booked on a busy Sunday afternoon. Parking out front is limited but there’s plenty of spots on St Peter’s street with a larger car park behind too. The banquet was excellent, good serving sizes and great to share with friends. There were lobsters fresh on display in their tanks too.

Been here twice in 2 months - truly fantastic restaurant. The cooking is so fresh and delicious that I have been impressed I am eating such good quality Chinese food in the suburbs of Adelaide. Even on ridiculously busy nights, the service is timely. I cannot rave enough about how wonderful the Chef Dong Fried Rice is and how amazing the Taiwanese Three Cup Chicken is - definitely recommend everyone trying these dishes and I am certainly going to have them again when I come back!

We had a great lunch. Authentic cuisine. You can't not have the stuffed eggplant - it's a must. Try the Durian pastries afterwards if you're adventurous - not for everyone tho

Recommended to book first. Without booking you have to wait before a table is available. Delicious yum cha, lots of varieties. Like the spicy chicken feet, tripe, rice in lotus leaf, salt pepper squid tentacles and rice roll. Steamed dumplings are good but the fried stuffs are a bit oily. The crispy duck with pancakes was crispy but too dry. We ordered too much and had leftovers to takeaway. Service was good. Food came out real quick.

Been coming here for many years. Good service, thou Peking duck is quite expensive compared to the olden days. $60 for 2 course peking duck, obviously the 1st being peking ducks with pancakes and the 2nd I chose noodle, well there were hardly any meat in the noodle dish😥.

The food was nice but not so great, I live spicy meals so if was not up to par for me but major key the meals were very affordable, the service was great as well.

Ordered uber eats from chef dong, wife ordered honey chicken, opened up sauce and found a fly in it. Just a major put off. Very disappointed.

We came here for Yum Cha for lunch. The food is reasonably priced and delicious and the service impeccable.<br/><br/>I found the food juicy and fresh tasting and prefer it to many other yum cha places I have tried. <br/><br/>I intend to return with the rest of my family so that they can also be wowed by the food.

Ordered UberEATS- shallot pancake, chef dong fried rice and crispy honey chicken. Delicious and well packaged and ready within ten minutes. Only complaint I have is that the shallot pancake was not crispy because of the condensation of the packaging. From order to delivery was about 20-25 minutes - 1.5kms from the restaurant. Will order again.

Excellent yum cha here today. Everything was delicious - s&p squid, chicken mushroom and ginger steamed buns, prawn dumplings, eggplant and my favourite was a crunchy texture pancake encased in dumpling wrapper. So good . Large restaurant in a small group of shops

Had a very enjoyable dinner here with family. Was recommended by my sister and I looked up Zomato and was a little concerned by the lowish score. Not sure whether this is the responsibility of previous owners. <br/><br/>However, the food and the service were extremely good and I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant. $12 corkage is okay. The shallot pancakes are made in the restaurant and a particularly good. I also enjoyed the red bean crispy pancake for desert. Thank you

Chef Dong Restaurant provided very good food and service.  The menu has a good variety of the standard items and a couple of interesting 'chefs' specials'.The waiting staff are knowledgeable and were happy to explain and accommodate any dietary requirements. Well worth a visit.

We went with a 4 people dinner groupon voucher worried that we might be treated second class based on other reviews on using the buffet yum cha deal, but it didn't happen. The service was fine and dishes were served as per the deal. However the food was just fine, not attracting me to visit again to try other dishes considering there are a lot more better ones in Adelaide.

Most amazing flavoursome dumplings. Its an absolute pleasure to eat here. Shallot pancakes are my second favourite. The service is very friendly and welcoming.

The food here can be very good, but is not always consistent. The first time we came - it wasn't busy and they were really trying hard - we were impressed by perfectly cooked rice pastry on the Shanghai steamed buns, with ginger and just the right amount of soup inside. But more recently they weren't as well cooked - that's forgivable, it's hard to get just right - but when our BBQ pork pastries came out cold, we told the staff, who took them away, but they came back having been microwaved. Probably best to go at a time when it's less busy.

This little gem is tucked away in a small shopping complex just across from the St Peters library. Since it re-opened with its new owners, new decor and new menu, this place has been a quick dinner favourite for me. They have a large range on their menu, as most local Chinese places do, but no matter what you choose, they really nail the flavour. I recommend the BBC, Peking Duck, or the Pork Belly. Staff are lovely and we usually catch an early dinner with the kids so it's always quiet and the food comes quickly.

Love it.. Amazing food amazing service best yum Cha I have ever had.

Great Yum Cha! I have eaten at Chef Dong a number of times now and their Yum Cha is excellent. Having lived in HK for quite some time I am familiar with how Yum Cha should be done and these guys have it nailed. Great tasting dishes, fast and friendly service in a well decorated and clean restaurant. Putting a window in so you can see the kitchen was a stroke of brilliance to combat the negative press the previous establishment had justifiably received.

Came here with a Scoopon... Fantastic food, one of the best yum cha's I've ever had. Soo fresh and cooked to perfection and the taste of everything was out of this world. Will be back. Well done guys.

Located in a small shopping complex in the well-to-do suburb of St. Peters, Chef Dong offers a decent selection of Chinese dishes that are separated into hot pots, rice and noodle dishes, vegetarian options and all your individual proteins. On top of that, they do Yum Cha during the day. A friend of mine recently told me about a Scoopon deal she bought where 4 people can have unlimited Yum Cha dishes for 90 minutes at Chef Dong. The dishes are ordered and served 4 at a time and there is a penalty for wastage. Being a fan of Yum Cha, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to see what they had to offer.

Using Scoopon voucher for Eat-All-You-Can Yum Cha, understood clearly the fine print that 2 dishes per couple at a time & food must finished first before the next dish can be served and maximum sitting time is 90 mins. First, was told to wait at least 15 to 20 mins for steamed dim sim, so we ordered the fried dishes as suggested, then waited for another 10 mins for it to be served, then one by one.... then came the BBQ pork buns, 3 in a basket, but they were too sweet, not the BBQ pork buns as expected, but still tried to finish 2 and 1/2, had some left over. Then the female manager came to our table with a very unfriendly tone telling us about the rules, so we explained the reason, in a way to give some feedbacks and we had no issue not to eat the next dishes, asking her to take away the coming dishes but she didn't wanna listen, saying that's the way it is and just walked away. Totally ruined our lunch mood ! If you don't like customers using vouchers, then what's the point having this voucher system to attract customers? With that kinda attitude, not listening to customers' feedback, how to woo customers ? By the way, it's not really worth it, it's even more relaxed to go to any busy Chinese restaurants in Chinatown for yum cha ! First and the last time !

Bought a scoopon. 2 dishes in 20 minutes and they had poor service. the apparent owner and/manager was in a table chatting away on his mobile. they didnt offer water. what are ridiculous way of advertising their company?! prawn and chives dumplings were overcooked that you cant pick them up with chopsticks. waiter seemed to be "forced to work" in that resto. not a friendly place.

Never try me again. This is the worst restaurant in Adelaide. Yum Cha is slow, service is bad. I never try cold dim sim

Not worth your time.... I purchased scoopon voucher for all you can eat yum cha....69 bucks for 4 people<br/>What can I say.....<br/>The foods were average but the service was bad....<br/>We have 90mins session but 1/2 the time was waiting time <br/>We had 4 people.... and all together we had 16 dishes.. thats work out to be 4 dishes each....<br/>If you just have normal(non voucher) yum cha... the price will be pretty much the same... not much different... but you'll get better service... food come out faster....<br/>So I will definitely not return....

Uncooked dim sim. Went to chef dong on the Australian day....waited more than 15 mins for my dim sims to arrive.....and it was uncooked! There is pink raw mince pork inside......not going there again!

Excellent Food at last. I traveled some distance to try this Chef Dongs Chinese Restaurant as it is very difficult to find a good Chinese takeaway in Adelaide, i wasn't quite sure what i was walking into after the disgusting reports about the Last place it was the Imperial Peking, upon entering i notice immediately the ambiance had changed to a well lite clean restaurant with friendly staff, i ordered my food and sat down to wait and a waiter arrived with a glass of water for me, now that just does Not happen at other places and within 10 minutes my food was given to me in a bag so i could carry it, when i ate it i was very surprised by the quality, you must try there Sizzling Fillet Steak with Teriyaki Sauce it was wonderful, ok it is Not the cheapest in town but every dish we ate was totally enjoyed with gusto, Entree i suggest there Crispy Shallot Pancakes Yum we will be going back if the food standard stays the same, it is worth the effort to try them out.

EXCELLENT SERVICE AND FOOD!. Came with my family for yumcha the other day to support the business after reading the article in the newspaper. Yum cha was superb! Taste very fresh and was delicious. Loved the fittings and fixtures after it was renovated. Out family decided to came for dinner. Again, we had a great experience and loved the food's presentation. We ordered prawns with shell, salt and pepper eggplant, salt and pepper squid and a lemon chicken. Perhaps next time we should try some of their lively seafoods! Looking forward!

We ordered Peking duck (2 courses), Chef Dong's special pork belly (braised pork belly), and salted fish eggplant hotspot. All the dishes has well balance flavour - eggplant were deep fried before cooked together in a hotpot, and the Peking duck skins were all crispy and had good meat to skin ratio! One tiny little downside is that the portion is slightly smaller than average Chinese restaurant

Chef Dong, a new Chinese restaurant that is a little misunderstood by the public. It is clean modern style restaurant different to the previous restaurant known as Imperial Palace which was closed down due to breaching state’s food standard code. Decorations and the cutleries used were modern and clean. Food is more lightly flavoured. Deserves to be tried by more people. Currently a quite place to have nice food.

A new chinese restaurant has opened where  Imperial Peking used to be .  It's called Chef Dong.  A completely new look together with the decor has made the restaurant look brighter and bigger.
