Review Dumpling King - Adelaide

Benedict Hoo
Absolutely delicious! We ordered pork fried dumplings, Shanghai fried noodles and chilli beef on rice. All the dishes were perfect! They tasted amazing and left us wanting to eat more, but the dishes were just too good a value! We couldn't even finish them. We ended up taking them back for a late night snack :) The only minor issue was the timing of the food. They seemed to take a while to come out with a long wait between each dish. We would definitely dine here again if we were to visit Adelaide again!

Corner store at the edge of Chinatown. Basic Asian store where you can get a decent sized serving at an affordable price. Fried prawn and chicken dumplings were good, juicy when you bite into it. You can add vinegar sauce and some not so spicy chilli shrimp paste on the side. Goes well with it. Skin of the dumpling is more to the thick side. Crumbed pork with rice is quite good. Very crunchy and well crumbed. Could do with bit more sauce on the side. Rice was quite dry, would think that's the most basic component of the dish to get right..

My family of three had lunch here two days in a row. We found the food is reasonably priced and very good portion considering it is in the heart of the city. Noodles/fried rice cost $13.90 and it tasted good - nothing fancy; just hawker style eatery concept (for those who have travelled in SEA region would understand). My daughter and I are small eaters so we shared a plate. Would recommend it-- value for money and we didn't have to wait long for food - had the items within 10 minutes (travelled during COVID when most places only had local tourist).

There were many different options for food. The seafood was fresh. I look forward to dining here again soon.

Great dumplings and not expensive. We had a quick bite before heading to Her Majesty's Theatre and the service was quick and food was tasty. Would definitely go back next time we are in the area.

20 minutes after ordering sweet and sour pork as takeaway I gave up and left. Three orders placed after mine were given to customers who arrived at least 10 minutes after I placed my order. The primary person on the register could clearly carr less that I had already waited far long than I have ever had to wait for this dish at other establishments.

The store is just at the foot of Chinatown so that's the first store around. It wasn't really busy at that time so I didn't have to wait for long around. They'll give you the menu when you enter and you'll have to go to the counter to order. The server was pretty nice and they worked quickly, they serve tea in the jugs on the table as well so serve yourself. Food was not the best but decent for the price. They have a huge variety and pictures of some food on the wall.

Ordered fried chicken and prawn dumplings and steam pork bun 3pieces, was told 15-20 minutes. After 20 minutes was told waiting on steam buns by one staff member, checked with another staff member after 30 minutes told it's coming but now dumplings that were sitting there getting cold weren't mine Asked how much longer after 40 minutes and young girl didn't come back with the information, asked another staff member and was informed at least another 8 minutes. Asked for refund which was given and left. Very disappointed.

Best dumplings in town! Without a doubt.

Ordered dumplings, pork buns, and noodles today. All the dishes were terrible. Looks and tastes like they were bought frozen and reheated. Tasteless food. 10/10 would NOT recommend.

Dumpling King has now moved into the new Adelaide Central Market food court. In need of a dumpling fix I headed straight to Dumpling King, particularly because they have the xiao long bao (soup dumplings). They are not as soupy here as some others but they are delicious. The steamed chicken and prawn dumplings were plump and juicy and great value. The spring onion pancake was good. Unfortunately, the fried pork dumplings weren't fried well. The filling was tasty but they were slightly blond. Despite the fact that they had tickets lined up the food came out quickly.

Came here for a quick cheap and cheerful dinner with my husband and we loved the dumplings and the food here. We lived in Footscray in Melbourne so we love a good dumpling 🥟 dinner and we did not leave hungry or disappointed - simple good food here 🥳

Me and my friend came here on a weekday we were the only 2 in the restaurant yet it still took 40 minutes for our dumplings to arrive. After 15 minutes I asked about our order and there was immediate confusion and miss communication between the sales assistant and the cooks. I dont mind waiting 5 or 10 minutes but 40 minutes is ridiculous.

Best place for the most amazing dumplings has a good choice for other food as well. The food is always fresh the price range is cheap not like the other places. Love it
JC
Long time Dumpling King fan. However, the new Dumpling King Food Court location was one of the worst meals I have eaten. <br/><br/>Dumplings were served cold/frozen in centre and food quality was below poor. Practically inedible. Would never return.
Lucy LU
Used to come here often. It is typical place for Non Chinese customers. It got everything for everyone, but the food itself is not the most authentic.
Phoebe Yeo
Great dumplings for a great price and free tea, whats not to love. This is probably one of the best places i have gone to for vegetarian food in Chinatown.
James Yong
Yrscore: F3,E3,R3<br/><br/>Dropped by to try the DanDan Mien (DanDan Noodle). Nothing extraordinary besides the decent portion. <br/><br/>Normal Chinese coffee shop setting. Could be better if something can be done about the number of flies in the restaurant. <br/><br/>Considering the plethora of food options in Chinatown, this will not be the first place that will come across my mind for food.
Mrs Mark
You don’t come here for the decor. Very quick and cheap food that arrived only moments after ordering. Generous portions. The fried beef with noodles was tasty but the wontons in chili soup were a bit too spicy for my liking
Only If Its Good
I love this place.  On a cold winters day, sit down and pour yourself a cup of hot tea to warm up.  Then the large plates of dumplings arrive.  You've made up your dipping sauce whether it just be the their special chilli sauce or the  Chianking vinegar they supply.  I mix the two together.  I can never eat all the dumplings and always have to take them home.  The a few hours later I have more dumplings to look forward to.

Oh these dumplings. So delicious, always perfectly cooked and insanely cheap! Paired really well with the garlic Chinese broccoli. Consistently great and quick service. A good stop on the way to a show at Her Majesty's Theatre or the markets.
Allen Jiang
Food was really nice and filling! Dishes are cheap and served very quickly. For a family of four, it only cost $40 to fill us all up for about 5 or so dishes, which is a bargain compared to Sydney.

Dumpling king is always my go to place for fresh hot dumplings. Go for the pork dumplings, it's your safest and best bet. The pan fried dumplings taking longer to come out but they are worth the wait!
Tessa McGiffert
Good food and friendly service! Only down fall is no efpos. There is however ATMs close by. I normally get the dumplings in chilli broth however recently tried that steamed chicken and prawn dumplings and they were also delish! Lovely little gem just do not forget $
Asha
Definitely a Chinatown classic in Adelaide. Best place to go for cheap dumplings. Can't expect much of a service from a crowded Chinese restaurant but the food is quick, cheap and delicious.
JN
I don't usually leave reviews for casual Chinese dine in-take away restaurants, however I'm honestly impressed by their customer service. Very good and friendly service. Food is cheap but with quality. Overall I do enjoy a casual night here for some yummy dumplings!
Daniella De Pretis
Nothing more needs to he said. This place is an institution!! Cheap and massive servings and thy make the BEST chilli sauce/condiment. Dumplings are pretty good too!!
Dieter
Food: Shanghai noodles and pork buns. Noodles were pleasant but what you'd get in a food court. Pork buns i didn't enjoy these like I usually do, maybe it's just the brand they buy in.<br/>Service: Error 404 Not Found. <br/>Ambience: pretty good, bright inside and not noisy. Mix of indoor/ outdoor seating. <br/>Verdict: midrange score reflects average sort of restaurant <br/><br/>

Either we ordered the wrong dish or I don’t get it! <br/><br/>This place is packed full every time I walk past, so decided to go in and was lucky to get a seat.<br/><br/>Ordered the chicken and prawn fried dumpling and I literally had to dissect the dumpling to find the prawn, I did not see any at all nor did I taste any, maybe we got the someone else’s dumplings! <br/><br/>Also had the spring onion pancake, which was crispy and quite nice.<br/><br/>Would I return? No, I actually think the fried dumplings next door are much better! <br/><br/>Sorry Dumpling King!
Monica612
Ordered the steamed vegetarian dumpings. Don't trust the photo on Zomato and their menu It is not green. I asked the waiter why they are not green. The waiter answered: "I don't know, I have just been here for a few days. " omg!
Steve
Not fresh! Dumplings are very average here...taste like they have been frozen and later defrosted. Think of it as fast food quality... give it a miss unless you need a quick feed
PizzaHat
When at Dumpling King, just get the dumplings. Then you won't be disappointed. I got a noodle soup without dumplings. My friends had dumplings. They are smart. I sampled a couple and yes... they were yummy dumplings. It's all in the name... don't be an idiot like me.
SKIFOODS
The dumplings are the best here. I buy them frozen and cook them at home. Their chilli is soooo gooood. When you dine in the restaurant you can eat as much of it as you want.<br/><br/>I usually just eat the dumplings but their soup and mapo tofu are also good.<br/><br/>The service i what you would expect from a place like this.

Dumpling king is a landmark of the Adelaide central markets. Nothing glamorous, but very popular classic dishes, dumplings, meat, vegetables dishes to boot, not sure wether over the years I was addicted to their prawn and pork dumplings or their delicious chilli jam/relish all which they offer cook/take home. Usual tea offered on arrival, service is hit and miss but not expecting alot in this environment. Definitely must try. Review pre May2016

Definitely not somewhere to go if you're after great service, however, for a quick meal, you can't go wrong! Decor is dated, kinda dirty and the bowls are ALWAYS wet. But hey, dumpling king are the king of dumplings. They do them well, and they do them cheap. Would recommend ordering the steamed chicken and prawn dumplings in clear broth (not on the menu). Peace and love
Benji
Awesome dumplings, probably the only reason I would dine here again. The dishes were average and bland in taste. I ordered the crispy chicken and rice and it lacked sauce. My partner ordered a wonton soup and the soup lacked flavour. Highly recommend the dumplings however!
Gastronomist
been here at least 20 times, favourite meal is the dumplings in chilli broth or the fried beef dumplings. The sauce is great and definitely well worth the 8.8 price tag. Free tea as well :)
_foodiej
The dumplings are pretty good and it's the only reason why I would come. Have also tried the Taiwanese beef noodle soup which was alright but I would rather stick with the dumplings as that's what they're known for.
Mr MM Smith
Good little dumpling shop at the market. Fresh and delicious. I had the red bean pancake and fried dumplings, made fresh, pipping hot and served with free tea.
Nick
Food here is absolute rubbish. Had some soup, dumplings, a chicken and rice dish and shallot pancakes - all really bad. The best thing about the place was the complimentary tea.

Went tonight to Dumpling King. Food was the usual, unexpectedly delicious, collection of addictive delights. But two things.<br/><br/>It had been 40 degrees all day long and when we got there in the evening they had WATER MISTERS!!!!! <br/><br/>I don't care who they are or what they serve, but from now on, if a restaurant doesn't have a wall of mist over it's outdoor tables so I can sit in January heat while cool water drifts down over me then I do not consider them in the same league as Dumpling King. Do you hear me Magill Estate? Africola? Andre's Cucina? NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE!!!!<br/><br/>And then....<br/><br/>I got a smile AND A LAUGH!!!!!!! from the guy behind the counter. My God! If these guys have good food, cheap prices, (dinner for three cost $43. I know pubs where $43 won't buy you the Surf and Turf) a water mister and now Friendly Service.... No restaurant in town is safe!!!!!

An old Chinatown favourite is Dumpling King at 85 Grote St, Adelaide, corner of Moonta St near the Adelaide Central Markets. This casual and popular eatery is a staple of the Chinatown area and we have eaten here on many occasions. From the table layout and its simple looking decor, you will find it is convenient for a quick and easy feed. There are plenty of menu options to choose from and we have eaten lots of them on previous visits but today was just a quick stop and so we ordered our favourites:
Eat All The Things
Delicious and cheap. Always look forward to my next visit to dumpling King! Fried and steamed are just as amazing as each other, try them both! Try some Asian greens on the side as well- so much deliciousness!
World In A Bite
Cheap, average dumplings, can be cleaner ...
Johnny Tiong
Located at centre of China town. Good and generous serving of dumplings. Crunchy guo tie with good filling. Dumpling soup was ok as well. Decent place for a quick dine.
CunnyFunt™
The quality of the dumplings here are inconsistent. Some days you get really good freshly made steaming juicy dumplings and sometimes just average. Prices are really cheap. $10 for 15 dumplings feeds 2 of us and Chinese tea is free! Service here is particularly bad however. Staff are sour-faced and unfriendly most the time. Will still pop by occasionally for some hopefully nice fried dumplings though.

Summary: rude staff, average food.<br/><br/>We had pork dumplings (no. 1) and twice-cooked pork. The food was edible, but nothing special, but what struck us the most was the lack of service (and outright rudeness of one of the staff). If you want a meal in a hurry and expect no service along the way, this may be a reasonable place, but certainly not if you are planning to have a *pleasant* or relaxing meal. The staff didn't provide us with a menu - we had to go to the counter; nor did they ask whether we were ready to order at any stage. Rice was served only when we asked why it hadn't come with the meat dish... On the way out, the cashier was rude - apparently going up to the counter to pay wasn't going to get his attention. Instead he basically replied with "what do you want?"<br/><br/>In all, not worth the price or the time. You can do much better in Chinatown.
T
Poor service. Good food. Although, the mustachio worker always looks angry and does not show any interest in helping his customers. This is the second time I have been here and they have forgotten another one of my meals.
Cookielessvee
nice place for beef noodle soup and vegetarian fried noodles. The fried dumplings skin was too crunchy for my liking but the filling for for the fried and steamed pork were delicious.
Cherikstony
My favourite dumpling place in Australia!! Had lunch here back in 2010 when I just finished my medical school interview at the University of Adelaide, and instantly fell in love with their dumplings! Now five years later, their dumplings remained the same! The dumplings are round and well made, the pork mince is fresh and the fillings are generous. Their chilli oil is also quite lovely, goes great with the dumplings!
Eating Adelaide
Good for a cheap and quick meal in the city. Had the steamed chicken and prawn dumplings which were lovely as was the fried rice and steamed vegetables. The pork buns were somewhat different to ones I've had before. They were quite dry on the inside and the filling was gluey. Service was ad-hoc, but for a busy place and cheap meal I guess you can't ask for too much more.
Misscharlot
whenever we are in Adelaide we will come back to this place for its awesome n huge dumplings. everything dumplings dishes u ordered is gonna be great, so no specific recommendation.
Food Rush Adelaide
Service was quick, dumplings were tasteful and the tea on every table was great. Each dumpling was juicy and the chilli paste isn't too hot and is great. Could improve by accepting eftpos and placing drink prices in public display.<br/><br/>| Service: 7 | Food: 9 | Price: Cheap |

Dumpling King is a reliable source for one of my favourite comfort foods - hot, steamy, tasty dumplings.<br/><br/>Food:<br/>Whenever we visit we tend to order the same dishes to be safe, and because we know that they are good. The dumpling dough has a great texture and is always at the right thickness to achieve a good balance between dough and filling. The filling, although generally not packed with flavour, provides more great texture. The real star of the show here is the chilli oil though. When combined with the brown vinegar it is the ultimate coating to dunk a dumpling in. Delicious. The chinese broccoli or bok choy in oyster sauce are a nice side to go with the dumplings - for freshness and to counter some of the guilt! This is quick, cheap, decent quality, comfort food.<br/><br/>Service:<br/>The staff are usually friendly - although you might every so often find one of them trying to take away your vinegar and chilli oil because some customers tend to use much more than their allotment! (read: I eats all the chilli oils)<br/><br/>Ambience:<br/>Dumpling King has a prime location on the corner of Grote and Moonta streets. It's not a fancy looking spot. This is a place for trackies and hungry stomaches.<br/>Always busy but it's usually not too hard to find a table.<br/><br/>Dish to look out for:<br/>Pork and Prawn Dumplings for sure. Preferably steamed.

Dumpling King is very over rated, people talk highly of it but maybe they have never had a good dumpling before.<br/>Not interested in going back the dumpling's were soggy and falling apart.
Marjfeng
Overrated place, food is under average. But do get cheap eats, but i would rather pay more money on better Chinese food. Same food tatsts differently for unknown reason.
Emma Gregory
when you don't really feel like cooking but want some quick and easy, Dumpling King provides great food for even greater prices too with good value for money. Doesn't matter what we order we are always satisfied with what we get.

They do really good dumplings here and great prices too with good value for money. Get both steamed and fried to share and you wont be disappointing! very filling!

Perhaps the greatest part about the Dumpling King experience – which should be had often – is the price. Dinner for two, $15. That’s $7.50 each punters. Try and beat that!
Rachel Lee
Quick service with friendly staff and delicious food at cheap prices! Between the seven of us we order about 70 dumplings at a total of $10 each, how can I complain? :)
Arissarangel
VegetarĂan dumplings. Are the vegetarian dumplings vegan friendly?
Janetmpenno
Great cheap eating place. Love this little place. Always great fresh food.
Stekmer
Great dumplings in a no frill setting. Just like any cheap cafe in most Asian cities, the service is indifferent, hygiene standards adequate (just) and the main theme dish (dumplings) very good and very cheap.<br/>The chilli paste on the table and flask of tea served with the meal will remind anyone, with serious Asian travel experience, of eating at local cafes that are usually more popular with the locals than tourists.<br/>Go for the dumplings and you wont be disappointed - the hot and sour dumpling soup is my favourite.

Bad sevices ....poor dumpling. Poor service was just the start at Dumpling King. Rudely pointed to a table, eventually served, dumplings not authentic and the tea was cold and weak. Not going back.

Never Fail Dumplings: 8/10. Would not go here for anything else as the markets and the surrounding food courts have so much more to offer. However, THE best when you want fast, cheap, delicious dumplings. Cures my dumpling sickness everytime without fail. Excellent home-made chilli oil along with the correct vinegar sauce for dumplings, makes me want to eat their dumplings everyday. <br/><br/>Atmosphere: 7.5/10<br/>Taste: 8.5/10<br/>Price: Reasonable

Very tasty dumplings indeed. Located in a nice spot parallel to a Taiwanese bubble tea shop.

Been there everyday. The dumplings are amazing and cheap. Here you'll fill up on the best food for cheap. My favourite is the first page of the menu.
April Nguyen
Horrible horrible horrible!!!! The only plus for this shop (not even deserve to be called restaurant) is cheap!!!! Other than that, nothing can be taken into account. Service is extremely poor! Staffs scare me with their upset face...all the time! Came here just because my bf loves dumplings. Never ever come back!
Mcriko1
Not enough time. Waited 25 minutes for a takeaway order and was told by the rude ass @ the counter here that there was still a 10 minute wait. For 10 steamed dumplings!!! WTF wont be back. Place stank like wet dog.
Gerbert
Standard has dropped. Don't bother
L_Cooper01
SA Great. Good food duirng work lunch breaks. Given the price, this place does not dissapoint.
Ben
Great dumplings I'm hooked. Tried Dumpling King twice once in Chinatown and the other on King William. Dumplings were nice and juicy. Its cheap no thrills what more could you want. Shame there is none in Perth
LugiaB4Ueat
Dumpings on a plate. I've only been here once and that's enough experience for my whole lifetime. I went there with a friend who highly recommended the place for the food and cheap price. Walking into the joint I was whisked away and taken back to the times when I was in Asia. Only it had taken me back to the parts that I wanted to avoid which were the low socio-economic areas with low hygiene standards. Since the tabletops and chairs were slightly sticky, I wouldn't be surprised if the cloth they had used hadn't been washed for a decade.<br/><br/>Anyway I had steamed dumplings which looked like they were boiled and left to rest in one of those hot dog sausage water baths while my friend had this noodle soup thing (which she said tasted great even though she needed to add half the contents of black vinegar into it). The steamed dumplings were served in their own pool of residue on a plate and boy did they look un-dumplingly like. Biting into one, I had found my heart and innards in tears as the casing and texture of the stuffing felt more like a ravioli (the frozen and microwaved kind) than a dumpling. The only good thing about these atrocious and shameful creations was the seasoning of herbs and spices in the stuffing, hints of garlic, ginger and onion were detected in the goo. <br/><br/>I am passionate about dumplings, have savoured many kinds and am Asian but there is no way in hell will I ever acknowledge these "sin spawns" from Satan into the same category as those wonderful heavenly pillows of goodness. If you are into the faux Asian experience and am short of cash then go ahead and fall for this trap. May the force be with you.<br/><br/>*Didn't feel bothered enough to write about the poor customer service because the food really just took the spotlight
Annabanana
So cheap and so delicious! Best dumplings in Adelaide!
Zeego
The most terrible, rude, snappy service i have experienced. Not even worth putting up with for the dumplings. The restaurant feels dirty in every way possible (cutlery, cups, table surfaces, smell). A simple plate of dumplings should not take 20 minutes to arrive. AND OUR TEA JUG WAS EMPTY. the worst place ever dont go here
Rowem Reviews
Solid dumplings as always, except my friend only ate the skin off the dumpling like a complete weirdo. Five stars!!!
Ernie
A cheap eats and that's about all.... Been a regular of this place for the last few years, "exceptional service" was never expected at here, nor many other eateries around the area, however basic courtesy was the least one could ask for. <br/>We had our order placed and not long after the food was at our table, however we realised one of the dishes we ordered was incorrect and had brought it to the attention of the same waitress, only to be scolded at.... blaming us immediately for misplacing our order and speaking down to us as if we had committed a felony. <br/>Personally I've never actually been one for complaints even at the poorest of services, however the attitude from the waitress on this occasion was absolutely intolerable and we had to speak with the manager. Manager came out and we were offered a free dish to mediate the matter, however with a close-to-death-glare coming from the counter, we opted to take our money back and left. Mind you we didn't even get the full amount for the meal as a few dishes were touched, we only got back the money for the dishes that were untouched.<br/><br/>A real shame really, the restaurant itself has always been a favorite for a quick bite. While not the highest quality of foods, 'satisfaction' would probably be the best way to sum it all up in a word. <br/><br/>However, after this occasion i don't think we'll ever be back again!
Izb
Terrible service. Was abused by one waitress for enquiring whether the food could be brought out all at once. Apparently not.<br/>Locals seem oblivious and overly tolerant.<br/>Food was cold and undercooked.
Stevu
Terrible, awful service, rude and slow. Abusive manager. Food very average.
Christian
Poor service, cheap tasty food.
Ozdazbo
Not as good anymore. Very disappointing of late- the food does not have the fresh taste as it once had, the chicken dishes are under cooked and the service is lacking.<br/><br/>Food when delivered it now slug in front of you it’s like feeding pigs in a piggery.<br/><br/>Not a happy customer anymore!!
Merlin
Cheap feed.. Very very cheap feed. The dumplings are great for a quick feed. Nothing amazing but very good dumplings that are consistently good.
Kay
Number six with chicken and prawn dumplings. I get the same thing every time, and it always satisfies. <br/>This is not the place to come for a romantic dinner for two, certainly. <br/>It's dirty and it's cheap and it's quick and it's trashy; that's the point. <br/>It's not supposed to be an elegant dining experience, it's just good Chinese style food, served fast and in plastic bowls. <br/>If you want an up-market Chinese experience try House of Chow, if you want a quickie then Dumpling King is what you need.
Sophia
Good, cheap food. I adore dumpling king - it has good food and it is cheap; a great pit stop for lunch! I''ve been going there for years now, but in the last couple of months there have been some issues:<br/>-service is a bit hit and miss. If it is busy the waitresses do not do table service. This is fine, but not communicated, or consistent.<br/>-the tea on the tables is diluted and seems to be just hot water.<br/>-the take away service is poorly organised.<br/><br/>None if these things are bad.... Just chaotic!!

Found plastic in my dumplings. Poor service. Staff didn't even apologise and wanted to refund half of my meal because I ate half of it!

Dumpling King is my second home. Cheap, brilliant service, tasty tasty dumplings.

Always top food and great value

Love it!. I always eat at Dumpling king when I'm in Adelaide. It's delicious and cheap!<br/>Love the Dumpling Soup.
Maria
Yummy dumplings and great tasting noodles ! The green tea flask needs cleaning !
Ange
Pork Dumplings. Really disappointed<br/>Tried take away pork dumpling<br/>They were over cooked and forced into the container <br/>By the time i opened them they could not be separated.<br/>Perhaps use two containers or get larger ones for the 15 dumplings<br/>Hope this helps for future

Great food, cheap and tasty. After many years of eating here, DK is generally consistent, good quality food. Service is patchy - sometimes table service, sometimes counter, sometimes friendly, often indifferent. But its tasty and cheap! Favourites are vegetarian dumplings (asian greens, glass noodles, ginger in a spinach dumpling dough), vegetarian combo on rice and the ma po tofu (minus pork) is the best in Adelaide. Free tea.
Lifesprettygood
These 2 are my fav meals at dumpling king, I have tried so many but always come back to these 2. I go there at least 2 times a month now.....love it so much....now I have all my friends and family loving it too. 10/10 for sure :)
Zoe L
Pork dumplings always tasty and so cheap.
LadyZombir
Cheap, but not worth your money. I don't understand why this place is so popular. The dumplings are stodgy, service is awful, and everything is really oily!
Leana
Delicious and cheap!. Discovered this place accidentally on a trip to Adelaide and our whole group was thrilled. I just moved to Adelaide - have been here three days and have already made a trip out for dumplings. A friend visiting who had just spent the last week driving down the great ocean rd and touring the Barossa said "Is it bad that this is the thing I'm enjoying the most out of my whole trip?" We had the chili oil dumplings, friend pork, steamed pork and green vegetable with oyster sauce. Everything came out quickly and tasted yummy. The service wasn't the best I've ever had, but nowhere near the worst! Highly recommended :)
Jred
Nice cheap eat. Favourites are the steamed pork dumplings and nasi goreng rice. Can anyone tell me if there is anything you can buy in Asian grocers similar to their chili oil/paste? The one's I've bought so far are all too hot and DK charge too much for a tub of theirs.
Little Red-Haired Girl
Good dumplings.. I'm a very fussy eater so the vegetarian dumplings at Dumpling King are perfect for me. I've never had a problem with the service. I've always been served quickly by friendly staff.
Thuong Ha
Worst service ever. Unless you are of Australian or European appearance, they will treat you like nothing. <br/><br/>We have came here simply for the food, service has always been bad. But today it reached an exceptionally revolting level of service. They gave us the wrong order and refused to rectify the situation. Disgusting attitude
Chililover
Obsessed. My friend and I come here at least once a week with me ordering 2 serves of steamed vegetarian dumplings and my friend ordering 2 serves of steamed pork dumplings (we love the look they give us after we've ordered 50 dumplings...). They are delicious, cheap and the service is usually quite quick, even on busy Friday nights. I'd eat them everyday if I could!
Ceej
I love this place! The food is always really good and so cheap! I've tried so many things on the menu and never once been disappointed.
Angie
Love it! Come here all the time. The service is definitely questionable (we waited half an hour for some special fried rice, and the pork dumplings didn't come forever) but once you dig into the food, it doesn't matter anyway. Satisfies all my cravings, hit up Dumpling King and definitely try their fried pork dumplings
Master Diner
Love the dumplings but the service is comical. What do you expect, I guess. I'll still come back.
Aaron
The best dumplings In town. My kids and I adore these little bits of heaven. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are great and the food is wonderful. Be sure if your in town go there and try for yourself you won't be disappointed
MissM
This place has gone downhill since I went here last! I usually just buy there dumplings frozen and steam them myself at home but today my friend and I decided to dine in. The place was less than half full and our ONE plate of steamed dumplings took ages to come out! If they had been delicious the wait could've been forgivable but they were anything but! As my friend remarked "it was nice to be given tea but we didn't want our dumplings sitting in it also!" they sat in a pool of water, soggy, over cooked and bland in flavour. As per usual the service was rubbish but that I am used to! I usually don't care as the product is nice and the prices cheap. But bad food and bad service? I'll be buying my dumplings from the asian supermarket and doing them at home from now on! P.s don't even try the vegetarian dumplings, they are disgusting!
John A
How good is this place!?. Went to the Dumpling King last week, how good is the food here! Service is simple you order the food comes out they clear the table when you finish. Never order from the menu ask the staff to order for and be delighted. Highly recommended.

Hilariously racist. I was standing in line and they served the south american guy in front of me and then the white guy after me. I explained that I was not with the guy in front of me and could I pay. The lady wouldn't even look at me. I had to wait for the next brown person to pay so that I could pay for my meal.

I think Dumpling King is one of those unpretentious place you can go to to have a quick, simple meal. Although the food is not top of the world standard, the prices are extremely reasonable and decent portion. I highly recommend it for a casual lunch or dinner.

Get what you pay for. Dropped in here for a quick late lunch - it was very quiet and service was quick. I had dumplings with noodle soup, which turned out to be too many carbs. I should have had a plate of vegetables to go with the dumplings. <br/><br/>The latter were very good, as they should be - the Chinese have had four millennia to get them right. Perfectly cooked dough and a fine spurt of flavour from the contents. The contents had enough substance and distinctive flavours to be interesting. But the soup was extremely salty, far too much for my taste and blood pressure. <br/><br/>All the few people in the place except me were Asian and they looked happy. DK is filling its niche - cheap prices, filling food, lots of customers.

DK is Quality. My old man and I went there for lunch one afternoon and I absolutely loved it. I would recommend this place to anyone that is after a well priced, quick, satisfying meal. The special fried rice/ special noodles are to die for. Not to mention both the steamed and fried dumplings which are delicious and never disappoint! The atmosphere of China town also adds to the occasion, especially on a friday night! The misses and I also enjoy DK!

Not ever going back there. Tried it today after recommendation by a non-Chinese and was absolutely disappointed! Ordered pork chop noodle soup and shanghai beef noodles, both were nowhere near satisfactory -- beef and pork chop were hard and tough and the noodle soup stock tasted like it just had some flavouring added. Dumplings were just ok, wouldn't rave about it. Maybe they can satisfy the non-Chinese but anyone who has been to China, HK or other Asian countries can tell that they are nowhere near authentic. Just 5 minutes away, BBQ City on Gouger St serves much much better food.

Cheap, Quick and Easy Eat. Hubby and I visit DK whenever we have pushed for time in the city and want a quick meal. I usually have the Prawn Wontons in Broth and hubby will either have fried pork dumplings (have had a few bad ones recently) or the steamed chicken ones. <br/><br/>The Sweet Chilli Oil on the tables is absolutely delicious - whenever i think of DK that is the flavour i conjure up. I would recommend Grote st over King William. The food just seems to be better.
Vivienne
When the food is this tasty and cheap, I'm not complaining about anything. Plus all the free green tea you want. Try the fried pork dumplings!
Michael
Rotten service, amazing prices, solid food. They are not gourmet dumplings. The English of the staff is poor. Service will ultimately be a fail!<br/><br/>But when it costs less than $8 for 15 dumplings and all the tea you can drink, what exactly is your problem?!<br/><br/>Don't knock it if it is just "not your thing". Dumpling King has its purpose.
Moira Blurns
Good price! good food!. Look...if you're fancy I wouldn't bother, but anyway place where your unemployed boyfriend can afford to take you and his mum for dinner is A OK by me. Admittedly i'm not overly adventurous but you cannot go wrong with the pork dumplings in chilli oil...the sweet sour ribs and the chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. MSG goodness.

My wife and i went there after a fantastic night out in the the city had the unfortunate experience of eating at dumpling city. We have eaten at many places in Chinatown and this was by far the worst. We ordered our meal including dumplings and a couple of mains and had it served to us in individual portions over 30 mins in no particular order, so the rice was really cold waiting for the chicken to arrive - which it never did. And we just about had to get down on our knees to beg for a bowl, soy sauce, tea etc as they were packing up around us even though it was only 8.30 on a saturday night! worst service. After waiting nearly an hour with cold rice for our drunken chicken we went up to the counter to ask about it - we were rudely told they forgot and there will be no refunds so we have to take it away. After another 10 mins drunken chicken arrives in take away packaging and we are forced to pay 50c for the container! What a cheek when it was their fault we had to take it away on the first place! Terrible Terrible Terrible Avoid
Yum Yums
Fresh, tasty, and filling! Three of us shared the steamed dumplings in chilli oil broth, fried prawn and chicken dumplings and a plate of chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. All for a mind boggling $25. Can't wait to return!

I think this place caters to white people more than to Asians. Otherwise can't understand why this place is so popular. Dumpling are really stodgy and the rice dishes really oily. Much better Chinese places more worthy of your patronage.
Casey Evol Stephen
Bleh! Do not attempt the vego (of which there is only one variety), they tasted bland and boring. Never going back.
Lara
So racist!!! They thought I (an Argentinian) must be with the Indian in front of me. They wouldn't let us split the bill even though I had come in to get takeaway and he had eaten in with another person. We, as strangers, had to split a bill!!! They don't see anyone unless you're Asian or perhaps white.

I had the misfortune of getting take away from this place last night. The Dan Dan noodles were basically boiled noodles with cucumber and a thick sauce. There were globs of jellified masses in the sauce, a product of an unskilled cook. If you can't thicken a sauce with potato starch in an Asian restaurant, you should quit and find another day job. The beef noodles were disgusting and the beef ridiculously salty. The chicken and prawn wontons were sloppy on the outside and dry on the inside. The fried dumplings were the best part of the meal, which isn't saying much. They would have been delicious if I was absolutely hammered and I couldn't get a yiros. These guys are kidding themselves- Dumpling King? More like Dumpling Eunuch. Pros: the food is cheap. Cons: its still a waste of time and money.
Daruma
I don't get it, why they are so busy. if you like dumpling try Mandoo, Korean style though. Dumpling King, its so obvious nothing much to put into the plates and the staffs, but it has so much to put into the cash register. but, if this is what the people want, they have done a bloody good job.
HoChiak
Average. First of all, the service is always bad! Now, Food standard is dropping. No reason for me to go back there again.

Try the Hot and Sour Dumpling Soup. What a bargain for less than ten bucks! I know a guy who comes over from Melbourne on business and always comes here--the one on King Wm St--for a dumpling fix he can't get anywhere else.
Jadelovesfood
Best dumplings in town. Absolutely love this place, we go almost once a month, whenever we feel like a quality Asian meal for a very cheap price. My favourites are the fried pork dumplings and the special fried rice, those two dishes are more than enough for 2 people and cost less than $16!!
Amy Li
Poor service, lost my order, didn't even apologise, never again!
Foodie
Yum!. With prices this great, I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about the service. They take your order when you're ready and bring you your food when it's cooked, what else is needed?<br/><br/>Obviously this place is known for it's dumplings, so here's a clue, order dumplings! <br/><br/>We go to this place weekly, order a few dumpling dishes are share in it's excellence! Never paying more than $10 for tons of yummy food. If you haven't been, you definitely need to try it! The one in China Town is the best.

Similar to Shanghai Dumpling in Melbourne. I'm almost certain that Dumpling King (SA) and Shanghai Dumpling (VIC) share the same owner. The menus are similar and even their DanDan noodles the same.<br/><br/>and yes, as both sell dumplings, their dumplings taste good.
Makadak
Cheap!. Dumplings are okay<br/>Prices are great<br/>Everything else is terrible.
Desiree Liu
Very dirty place, food just average, and the service is just BAD
Feathers
(homer drooling noise). Here began my obsession with dumplings.<br/>the chili sauce is better than any other place, the tea is actually drinkable, and the dumplings... are the BEST!<br/>(steamed chinese broccoli ftw too)
Nicholas
Well below average. In town from Sydney & after reading all the glowing reviews of this place thought i'd give it a go.<br/><br/>Firstly the place is very dirty - there was chewing gum on the table next to mine when I got there. ON THE TABLE!<br/><br/>Ordered the chicken & prawn dumplings and the chili beef with rice.<br/><br/>As many others have mentioned, the steamed dumplings are very 'gluggy' - i.e. almost as if they have been poached rather than steamed. The filling looked like minced chicken and tasted much the same - i.e. very very very bland. I saw one prawn in my portion of 10 dumplings.<br/><br/>The chili beef was just as bad - the rice was so overcooked and hard it was like it had just come out of a pack and been microwaved for 10 seconds. The beef again was tasteless - surprising given that it was swimming in a brown sauce with chilli pieces. It was not spicy at all and didn't taste of much.<br/><br/>I'm not sure why this place gets so many rave reviews - maybe just because it is cheap and I guess ultimately you get what you pay for.
Alicia
It's all about the food.... And it's gorgeous!
Fleur Chapman
The food is awesome! The decor is terrible but the prices are so cheap and the food so yummy

Best dumplings in Adelaide. Dumpling King certainly do have the best dumplings in Adelaide, they are tasty and very cheap. I recommend the steamed pork dumplings, the steamed chicken & prawn dumplings, the chilli beef on rice and the Dan Dan noodle (to me it is like a delicious spicy pasta dish). Everything is so affordable that you could grab a friend or two and try them all. <br/><br/>I am in love with their chilli sauce.<br/><br/>Two areas Dumpling King could improve is their service and drying their dishes before they serve them (they usually give you a bowl which is still wet, not very appetising).<br/><br/>All in all, a DK is must try!

Its good!. Dumpling gods!

Cheap, somewhat nasty yet delicious. The decor in this place is food court nasty! It is somewhat dirty and the service is rude and terrible.<br/><br/>However,<br/><br/>the food is cheap and good and it's very quick.<br/><br/>So for a quick & cheap bite in the city in the evening i head straight there!

This place rocks! You have to experience it. The dumplings are out of this world good.

Lunch. Yummy, yummy, yummy and the chilli sauce is to die for. Pleasant and helpful staff. Plain decor dosen't match the food which is highly recommended and more'ish.

Great Dumplings. I have been going to DK's regularly for years now and I've never been disappointed.. sometimes you may wait a few minutes to get a table but it's never long... the food is awesome, noodles are tasty and dumplings delicious. The Peking Pork dumplings win hands down and the BBQ Beef in Spring Onion sauce is a winner. Meals are cheap and huge and staff are happy to send you away with a take home container of your leftovers! Love it.

Tasty and affordable dining. Excellent value for money at this small but busy restaurant.<br/><br/>The setting and decor inside leaves alot to be desired, but after one visit there you realise this does not matter at all. There is a large selection of food available, and the service is extremely fast.<br/><br/>Steamed pork, and steamed (or fried) chicken & prawn dumplings are always a favourite. The chilli beef is also a nice addition to your meal.<br/><br/>Dumpling King's unique and delicious chilli sauce is provided on every table, as is a pot of tea.<br/><br/>It didn't take me long to become hooked on this great little restaurant, and now find myself going there roughly once a week.

I did receive the royal treatment :P from da king!<br/>the dumplings were rounder then humpy dumply yet alot softer, as i bit into one pork bun the steam escaped the bun and singenged the roof of my mouth howver as painful as it was i loved it cos i got to eat the dumpling<br/>the dumpling was nice. and yummy.<br/>the dumpling was good.<br/>it was creamy.<br/>i like the dumpling.<br/>the dumpling likes me.<br/>the dumpling was salty, yet sweet. I do have a sweet tooth! <br/>A thousand tastes rolled into one ball of goodness, screaming at me, EAT ME!!!!<br/>i looked that little sucker in the eye and took a little lick, then i knew there was no tunign back, i had been captivated by the king and his dumplings<br/>i turned to my husband who is 20 years older, and couldnt quite chew them properly! so i cut them up for him, and brought out his processor, mashed dem up gud!!<br/>He did however enjoy the decor, as he is a bit of a sucker for beautiful things - like me ! haha. A diamond ring emersed from his pocket!!!
Casual SA Diner
Great value! Who cares about the boring decor with these tasty cheap treats. Careful - that isn't soy sauce on your table, it's strong black Chinese vinegar (great stuff but you won't want to use as much as you would with soy) Definitely going back often.
Alice
Well Worth It. Highly recomend the steamed Pork Dumpling, at $7.80 for 15 you can rarely finish all these delicious morsels! Also try the Ma-Po Tofu and Spicy Chicken on rice. Oh and free bottomless Chinese tea :)

Simple and easy would be the easiest way to describe The dumpling king. I recommend the restaraunt to anyone for a cheap yet good quality meal with acceptional service. The interior looks a little plain and seating is like a classroom but if that doesn't bother you than I sudgest a visit to the dumpling king for your next chineese meal.

Yummy dumplings and a good place if you want to eat out with your omni friends. 3/5

Dumpling King has been a popular eatery for my friends. It is a cheap eat and caters for big groups, especially good before a night out or after! I, personally have avoided this place as I do not eat pig, and my friends favorite meals here are mostly pork based.       To mix up the regular Saturday morning market shop however, we decided to give Dumpling King a go, without pork.  From this experence, I will say I was not interely impressed. We ordered to share, as suggested by the waitresses; a beef soup, spring onion pancakes, chicken and prawn dumplings and a Singapore noodle. I try to come to any very cheap restraunt or cafe with low expectations.  As the food is so wonderfully cheap, you can not expect the service or drinks list to be great, which it wasn't.  I must add however that the atmosphere that trickles in from Chinatown is so vibrant and lovely to watch the passers by! The food does not come out to

Dumpling King provides a great lunch or dinner option when you're craving something greasy, unhealthy and ridiculously cheap! Great for uni students like myself who don't want to make a huge dent in their bank accounts/wallets with most dishes coming in under the $10 mark.

My wife recommends the fish ball soup, my daughter says the fried noodles with barbecue beef are excellent, my son loves sucking the juice out of the shanghai mini pork buns (they’re filled with a pork ball and stock. You nip off the edge with your teeth and then suck out the soup. Or you can do what my daughter does and just bite into one and have the soup squirt all over the person sitting opposite… Usually me!)

The only reason why I stayed was because I really do like their food (moderate quality at affordable prices) and that it was a convenient location. In the future, I might just head to the one in King William Street and if service there is equally depressing, I do hope that one day, a customer would voice it out to them as I doubt that my advise would be seriously considered-.-

Every international Asian student has heard of Dumpling King. Cheap and authentically tasting Asian food- what's not to love? It's literally fast food here. Dont expect fantastic service but you can expect good food They just opened another branch on King William and that is getting as crowded during peak hours as well! Steamed Peking Pork Dumpling (15 pieces) $6.80 Dan-Dan Noodle with Spicy Pork Sauce (dried) $7.80 Taiwanese Beef in Noodle Soup $7.80 Noodle with BBQ Lamb in Spring Onion Sauce $7.80 Fish Ball Soup $4.50 5/85 Grote st Adelaide, 5000 (08) 8212 1886

...if you mention dumplings in Adelaide then you’ll get at least one person talking about Dumpling King. You even get people saying it’s better than dumplings in Sydney …

I love a good food day, infact a bad food day can really ruin my day! So today was both happy and delicious! It's funny when you're expecting a good lunch, so you skip breakfast.. probably not the best for your body, but MAAAAAAN are you ready to eat when
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Dumpling King is a busy dumpling bar located in the heart of Adelaide's Chinatown. Very popular with student and office worker types, we had to wait for a few minutes for a table just before midday even when most of Adelaide was still on Christmas leave. It has a moderate sized inside dining area and a number of outside tables which would be fun to sit out when the weather was suitable. I love a really good dumpling bar, one with lots of noise and movement, with good, cheap dumplings and noodles flying out of the kitchen. Dumpling King makes the grade on the noise and movement front, the prices were reasonable and staff friendly (my experience is that dumpling bar service is often at best brusque, at worst outright rude). However, the food is mediocre and service isn't as fast as at most dumpling bars I've been to. Best of the dumplings were the steamed chicken and prawn. These were the ones that friends recommended we try and while the skin was slightly 'gluggy' the filling was sweet.
