Review The Archer - Adelaide

Koalafood clan
Pros: extremely friendly staff. Beef schnitzel: $22 cooked well. Diane sauce seemed lacking a bit of cream Steak sandwich: $23 delicious & hearty with all the trimmings. Ciabatta was warm which is a plus. Scotch fillet steak: $35 well seasoned….a little over salted (a touch). Ordered rare but decided blue. Didn’t complain as we can stomach it but others may be complaining about it. We prefer underdone than over done, but considering price, chef really should be bang on. Gravy seemed like a jus, tasty but not thick enough to grab onto the steak Kids cheeseburger: $9 tasty, well portioned but lacking a little salad.

Love the old building and the layout inside. We enjoyed sitting in one of the booths admiring paintings on the wall which were for sale. It was a fairly quiet time of the day, not many customers at the time we were there yet it took half an hour for the food to come out after ordering. My husband had to leave for an appointment before the food arrived so I took his food home in a take away tray which ended up going in the bin as it was soggy by the time we got there. I was surprised that when ordering a Caesar salad, I was asked if I wanted to pay extra for chicken which I did not as I have always received chicken with my Caesar salad everywhere else that I’ve ordered it. The price of a cranberry juice was quite steep too- $6.40 for one glass! The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Have been to the archer a few times in the last few months. The food is amazing. The gin selection is huge! Staff have been really friendly and accommodating to our needs. I love the library upstairs it is so gorgeous. Would definitely recommend this pub if you want a function or just a night out.

A pub with not bad food. Lots of tables. There are lots of decorations including paintings on the wall. A fireplace which is nice in cold days.

The pulled pork burger is amazing, such a great burger. 100% recommend 👌 Awesome, friendly staff who were up for a chat and a laugh. Great atmosphere! Just an all round good pub for a drink and a meal especially before a footy game. Cheers guys 😊👌

I love this place for drinks after work!! Has a good vibe. The menu has lots to choose from and everything I've tried has been pretty good. However, those booth seats in the dining area are way too squishy for people over a certain weight😅

great pub and great feed! Highly recommend the archer for functions as well - they were very accommodating and went above and beyond and truly made my birthday one to remember! The staff are always very helpful and always serve with a smile and a laugh!! Great venue - the best in North Adelaide!

Came here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. Service was quick and friendly. Meals came out without having to wait for too long especially with time limits on car parking in the area. My Pork Belly was delicious. Decent serving size cooked just right. My Wife had the Chicken Parmi was a good size again but she thought it was a bit bland lacking flavour. Keen to try the other things on the menu when we come next time.

A beautiful pub with good food, good service, attentive staff, lovely atmosphere - would definitely recommend it and look forward to going there again.

Not sure why there are so many low ratings - I suppose it is because the pub has changed hands a couple of times over the years and it can be a bit inconsistent, but my (many!) experiences have been mostly positive. I live in the area so it is our 'local', and sometimes you have to wait a long time and sometimes you don't, sometimes the food is only average and sometimes it is amazing, sometimes the bar staff are sparse and sometimes plentiful, but I have found the staff to be at least 90% pleasant and helpful. Sometimes you will get a noob, but it is fair that sometimes you give a new young person a job so they can learn and get better! I have given it 5 stars to try and even-out the unfair low ratings it seems to have accrued. Last time I was there (a couple of weeks ago) it was great, and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful, and the serving time was instant! Also, people should be aware that though the renovations were done a while ago, it is still quite a gorgeous pub to spend time in. Plus - POOL TABLE! For me a pool table is always a winner. (P.S. The only real downside? Archer Hotel, if you read this, PLEASE use a stronger disinfectant down the floor drain in the ladies loos to make up for that weird ancient plumbing smell ... blerk!)

Hi, I find that I need to write a review on the Archer Hotel because of my experience we had today.
Firstly we first asked for a Bundy and Coke No Sugar. The bar person didn’t know the difference between a rum and a bourbon and tried to sell me a Jim Beam. Then she worked out the hotel didn’t sell rum or Coke no sugar. All very confusing for her so I ordered a CC and dry. My friend ordered a Squash which was flat and tasted like dish water after washing the dishes.
We both had burgers which were fairly average considering the price.
We won’t be back in a hurry any time soon.

Bad service, bad food, expensive and long wait on meals. Management should deal with customer complaints instead of palming it off to their employees. Definitely will not return or reccommend.

The food was fine and your typical pub fare. I was a little surprised how expensive the drinks at the bar, it was almost more expensive than the food!!!

For those who don't know it's been sold and new management have raised the prices on all food and drinks.
I was caught out when I went in to get an Archer ale and was told they weren't making it anymore.
When I ordered two beers and paid $19 I was shocked. Then when I checked the menu on the bar to discover the the cost was $8.50 each I questioned the bar staff. He said that they had not changed the menu yet. When I asked for my $2 he said it was to late.
I and my friend will not be going back here ever again.
I had dinner at The Archer last night & it was AMAZING!!! It totally exceeded all my expectations! I had the vegetarian gnocchi & it simply melted in my mouth! Loved it! And the customer service was outstanding! Nothing was too much trouble! I will most DEFINITELY be back!

Usually come here for a lunch with friends. I find that the menu can be a bit hit and miss for my tastes. However the service is usually fine though sometimes it can take a bit of time for food to come out.
This time we ordered the salmon on couscous and the rump steak.
Salmon was great, cooked really nicely with accompanying couscous, cherry tomatoes and prosciutto. I probably could've done with the salad-like dressing that was put all over the dish but it was fine with it.
The steak was ordered medium but came out mostly rare to medium-rare which was unfortunate as they normally do cook it better than that.

The indoor seating area can seem a bit dark but is nice for dates. The outdoor seating area is partly under cover but on a lovely day is really nice.

Have been here twice now for New Year's Eve dinner, last night an early dunner before the Strikers game. Firstly it was great to find a place open for all day dining close to Adelaide Oval before the game. The American burger joint closed at 4pm as it was New Year's Eve which I found odd.
Once again as our previous experience the food was with out fault sll 5 of us had great meals and drinks. The $15 burger and pint is a great deal and the burger tastes so good, moist, succulent with a great flavour and the chips OMG! the best on Adelaide. The crispy garlic beef tacos were delicious with the hum of the harissa aoli, the only thing missing was the coriander as apparently they had ran out. Which was disappointing, can't they just send someone yo the local supermarket to buy some? Staff were friendly and loved the comfy booth. Prices eere good with some specials and daily deals. Will certainly be back and would highly recommend to others.

Perhaps there's been a change of ownership?. My wife and I dIne here every week/2nd week and are steak night regulars.

We've had consistently good meals and the odd time where we've tried something different like the Archer burger or kangaroo salad it's been a hit.

I will say that the parmy was a little oily on one occasion but that's really the only issue we've had.

Staff are friendly and attentive.

Maybe they had a change of management this year due to bad reviews or feedback who knows..

Grumpy staff, like cheer up life's not that bad! How hard is it to smile and offer good service to the people who pay your wages especially on such a nice day and in such a great location! What a let down....

Probably the worse chicken parmy I have ever had. Chips were cold and dry. The chicken was hard to get through. To top it off - bad customer service. I won't be coming back!!!

Shocking. The worst attitude towards patrons i have EVER experienced in my 42 years of living in Adelaide!!! I use to wonder why people from interstate, overseas, and rural areas used to complain about Adelaide...and tonight thanks to your establishment i finally learnt why! The rudeness and sheer disregard my colleges and i have experienced tonight will guarantee that we will never visit your establishment again! And sad to say all while the most exciting experiences of Adelaide are happening ...the Fringe leading into WomAdelaide and the Clipsal, and be assured i will share my experience with my family, friends and clients and you can thank your staff and "security" person for this!

Overpriced! Bad atmosphere in the hotel! and worst of all terrible tasting food!

Only Once!. Disappointed, that's what we were.
Party of four, up to the Library room. Staff were pleasant and friendly, drinks all round to start. Ordered entree and mains, we were the only table occupied, that should have been a warning!
Mate and I ordered pan seared scallops for entree, partners ordered a vege crepe between them. Entree's finally arrived, I nearly fell off me chair!
There were 3, not more, not less, but 3! scallops artistically arranged on our plates. They must be taking the piss I thought, the rest will come out in a bit.
But no, for $5.63 per scallop, that was all we got. Not happy Jan. The ladies crepes were lukewarm but they soldiered on.
Mains came out, 3 lamb chops and one Snapper, plus extra salad and spuds, all for a fee! The ladies chops were cold and had to be sent back, my fish was ok and mate was happy with his. There was one other table occupied by a couple so it wasn't as if the chef was rushed off his feet.
Where do these wankers get off, its a pub, not a gourmet restaurant, but they charge like one. We walked out of there $300.00 poorer, and will never be back. We eat out very regularly and this has been the worst experience of ripoff that we have come across. Good luck surviving this GFC.

Dissapointing. On a lovely sunny afternoon in the neighbourhood you'd think the Archer would be a nice spot for a quiet drink, chat and meal with a friend. I couldn't have been more disappointed with the quality of food they served me. The rump steak was poorly presented- big and clunky on the plate, overcooked to the point it was so tough I could not eat it, and the mushroom sauce tasted burnt. The cutley was big and unnattractive (who would even think that that could be an issue?!!!). Don't get me started on the salad (which was hidden underneath the steak hence partically cooked due to the heat.

Argh, as a local resident I'm dissapointed that they can't do better with the wonderful location they are lucky to have. I'm surprised to have read some good reviews on here as all my friends had advised me against going there. They were so right.

Library Restaurant. This is the best dining experience one can hope for - our experience, waited over 45 minutes for the main course and when it did come out, it was plonked on the table ! The side dish of potatoes need salt, so my partner went looking for the pepper mill and salt. The potatoes where burnt on the outside and not cooked on the inside - in fine dining they should never have come out of the kitchen. I would have been happy to have three glasses of wine, as we had to wait for our food, but had to call out to the waitress to order a drink. Shouldnt the staff ensure customers have a full glass, its fine dining after all !!!
i dont think we will be back.

Was quite good food. UERY disappointed that there wasnt a change table for my friend to change her sons dirty nappy. Not sure why childrens menu isnt included on main menu.
Victoria Derilo
I wouldn't advise anyone with younger children to come here, no facilities for this situation such as change tables etc

Pitiful. Nothing good to say about this place. Went there today for a fathers day lunch as everywhere else in Adelaide was booked out, I now know why the Archer wasn't.
Order was taken at 1pm, at 2pm I went and asked where the food was and was told that they are just serving it all up now (hadn't even started cooking). 20 minutes later they brought out the kids meal, another 10 minutes later the 3 others meals.
Cold chips with the shnitty, very average parmi, 350g rump steak was ordered medium rare, what was served up an hour and a half after it was ordered was a crispy well done piece of meat as thick as a pencil.
But the worst part about this place is the service, impolite and willing to take out their frustration of working on their sunday arvo on their paying customer. And knowing all too well they had made a mistake with our order earlier which is obvious to both them and the customer, trying to cover it up by saying it is being served up now instead of a simple apology and perhaps a free desert? Not well played at all Archer.
Don't bother, all they have going for them is location and their are plenty of other pubs a stones throw away.

What happened?. Jeez, how far this place has fallen! Not so long ago it was quite the place to be with pretty decent pub grub to boot. We ate there a month ago and I have to say it was pretty much inedible. S&P Squd that was clearly cooked in luke warm oil and seemed to completely lack the fairly necessary salt & pepper. A chicken schnitzel that was just super-bland. I guess the prices are ok, personally I'd be happy to pay more and get something I enjoyed eating!

Lovely service, good food, upstairs bar is the highlight, fantastic bar team!

Wouldn't let my dog eat their chicken parmi, terrible for such a perfect located pub.

Today, I’m here for the $10 Chicken Parmi. The Archer is a popular venue. Located on the busy cafe strip of O’Connell Street, it’s an easy walking distance from some of the popular restaurants.
Twohungryitalians
The schnitzel looked good, with a nice colour and crisp crumb. Trying the beef on its own it tasted ok, with a decent flavour and tenderness. The mushroom gravy contained visible mushroom but did not appear creamy as described on the menu. The sauce was delicious though and worked well with the schnitzel elevating it from average to good.
Date Nights Adelaide
i would recommend going to the archer. it's an easy pub meal in a nice place, and plus i hear it gets rowdy a bit later in the night ;)

Heard it's got the best schnitzel around the area; but it wasn't on the lunch menu. Instead had a burger. It was a bit too salty for my taste though. Still. Can't beat the price; 10 bucks.
Parmi Guide
It was a well-rounded team performance across all disciplines, there were neither standouts or abject failures amongst the rating criteria but unfortunately without any “Star Power” to add that needed extra 1% the Parmi – much like our Olympic team – fell just short and ended up with a Silver Medal.

I had high hopes as friends have mentioned of how good the food was; let's see if it was right on the money
