Review The Historian Hotel - Adelaide

Emily
We used the function room upstairs for a lunch celebration after a registry wedding and it was perfect! Staff were friendly and helpful and the upstairs space is an amazing venue for a private function. I would recommend working out your food options beforehand as a couple of the meals were on the dry side.

Order food from an app, that’s fine. Drinks come out right away. food on the other hand, A bowl of chips took over an hour to reach the table. No staff to come check up on your orders, half the table got orders in 30mins the other half got orders in 1 hour 10. If you’re on a time line skip this place altogether.

We had a staff lunch here and I will definitely come back to try more off the menu. Size proportions are just right, it is a little pricy but staff are prompt and courteous. Bar has a very nice atmosphere for quick catch ups in little groups.

Fantastic food and service. There were a few of us who ordered different meals and we all really enjoyed them. We will hopefully have our next team lunch here if we can book in

We've been in twice in the last few weeks and the food has been pretty average. We got burgers the first time and they were so overcooked that they just tasted like charcoal. Then we got schnitzel and the gravy was tasteless and extremely watery. The place looks great, the people are nice, but the food is letting the team down.

A great little quiet and quirky pub on Coromandel Place in the heart of the city. Nice to sit in this lane way and enjoy a drink or two.

A cosy little pub. Bartender was very good. Plenty of room. Reasonable prices on a great range of beers and other beverages. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Great little pub in a fantastic location. Terrific atmosphere. Unfortunately the food, basic pub grub, is so so.

I hadn't been to the Historian Hotel for many, many years but had enjoyed my previous visits. I returned this week for lunch and was pleased to see that it still delivered a good pub experience. The peri peri chicken was the popular order at the table, which also came with a choice of sides, and it turned out to be half a chicken that was cooked well. The vego burger was good with a decent serve of really crunchy, nicely seasoned chips. They have table service and the staff were friendly.

My colleagues and I went there for lunch on tue it was five of us. Our chips looked and tasted like they had double fried aka old chips. My wagyu beef schnitzel tasted sour and like it was off. My colleague said burger was not very good neither. The schnitzel, chips and small salad costed $24. Definitely not what I expected. Don’t think I will be back.

come here for a work lunch last week. we sat upstairs, was about 20 of us.  styled like an old fashioned pub. service was fantastic, food was great. i had the calamari and garlic bread which was fantastic. i dont think there was anyone who didnt enjoy their meal. <br/>everything was reasonably priced and they didnt charge us extra cause it was a corporation like many other places do.<br/>will go back.

Came here for afterwork drinks. The interior decor and atmosphere reminds me of an old fashioned pub. Honestly it wasn't the most comfortable setup. There were a lot of poles and pillars and whatnot in the way so it was a bit difficult to find a good spot to stand and chat as a group.<br/><br/>My colleague highly recommends their pie floater, so maybe next time I visit I'll give their food menu a go.

Absolutely amazing steak, definitely up there with the best I've ever had. Wait was a bit long, however, and staff seemed a bit disinterested. The steak definitely makes up for it, though, and the sauce is to die for. Must try for meat lovers!

Everyone's kind of place. One of the few places in Adelaide where everyone feels welcome....like our version of "Cheers". Suits to students, everyone is treated the same by the great staff. Food good quality and value, good selection of booze. What more can you ask for? <br/><br/>This place has been humming for years, they're obviously doing something right. <br/><br/>I'll be back .................often.

Food ok. Don't book a table at 12 noon, cos you will be kicked out at 1 pm on the dot. As they double book a lunch service. You are made to feel like the clock is ticking and your out.

What a pub should be. It's our office regular and we love it. We are always welcomed and looked after but the really cool staff, who remember our drinks. <br/>Food is great and always changing the menu but keeping the faves on sometimes with a twist.<br/>Great wine list supporting SA and prices food drinks in comparison with the CBD.<br/>Doing a great job guys, love your work.

One of Adelaide's finest. With all the new bars and pub renos, this is a classic and delivers in every way. Food is fresh with great serving sizes and service is spot on. Wine list is short but everything is covered and supports South Australia. Good crowd and a new added outdoor area which you have to get in early for, especially for a Friday afternoon session.

Get there!. A great pub, known as a Monday to Friday Suit pub, food is great, staff are really good and friendly, good table service but not in your face.. Specials are good, steaks and burgers are winners. Staff dress up on some Fridays but are pretty tidy anyway. One of the better city pubs.

Hidden beauty. Have been here a bit and rate it! Excellent and consistent food. Can't go past schnitzel but others had salad and risotto, all spot on. Service is faultless and genuinely friendly. Prices are great and beers flowed. Get in there you won't be disappointed, but should book. Cheers

Amazing. We went to the Historian before christmas and it was crazy busy but the girls were great, friendly and efficient.<br/>We had Schnitzels, burgers and steak (best in Adelaide) burgers were big, juice and chips awesome, Schnitzels were not mass produced and tasty. Pub is a cool old style pub, which is rare in Adelaide as everything is modern. Really top place to go, cool chicks and awesome food. thanks!

Nice balanced menu with a few restuarant standard dishes as well as traditional pub grub. <br/>Would have like to see a more exciting range if starters, but overall a very enjoyable meal.<br/>Impressive wine list too.

Almost as dreary as my working day. Went to a work pub lunch here in the upstairs (ie, group) dining area. I'd heard good things about the interior, but it seemed like a pub where renovations had been half completed. The wood floors and staircase were gorgous, as was the feature wallpaper, however, the upstairs area got very little light - made worse by the state of darkness the upstairs bar area was in. The decor was half-assed (not entirely sure why there was a map of Paris there...didn't seem particularly Historical) and left the place lacking in atmosphere. A visit to the toilets left me envious of their gorgeous tapware, but overwhelmed by the smell of urinal cake. Disappointing, especially when you frequent the ladies. <br/><br/>Beers on tap were limited upstairs, but at least one of them was James Squires. When asked about cider, the bar staff offered only Five Seeds. Yuck. Wine list was reasonably priced.<br/><br/>We'd preordered, and our food arrived quickly after we'd paid. The Steak and Onion Pie was hot, and served on a bed of (too) creamy garlic mash, with some roasted vine tomatoes. Good job I didn't have any afternoon meetings, as the garlic packed quite a punch. <br/><br/>The pie innards were tasty, and although the beef was free from gristle etc, it didn't seem to have been cooked long enough, and was mostly tough. The biggest letdown was the pastry - while the top looked flaky, the rest of the pie seemed a bit lacklustre. I tried a bit of the pastry on its own, it sadly lacked any flavour whatoever, and was paler than Nicole Kidman. <br/><br/>All in all, for a working pub lunch it's not bad - but the atmosphere, especially upstairs lets it down. Needs to be a lot more old-school pub, and less refurbed hotel.

Great feed. This has obviously been taken over recently. It's clean, painted and back to where it should be.<br/>Great food, something for everyone, must try the burger or the steak.<br/>Service is what you want and the beer is cold, good wine list too.<br/>Well done!

he Historian served up a very cool venue – especially on a rainy day – and a decent burger with fresh, minimal ingredients but with some noted issues. The patty delivered today was both a positive and a negative, and not enough sauce did detract. Having said that, and despite the overall negative vibe of the review, it was overall quite enjoyable, but it just feels so much like a missed opportunity

The Historian Hotel is a wonderful old building at 18 Coromandel Place which is a little laneway between Pirie Street and Grenfell Street. It is a fine restaurant with good table service and is also a SALA 2010 venue . As the bar is in the middle of the r
