Review Saracens Head Hotel - Adelaide

The tie up with the hot chicken project is amazing! Went to grab some chicken and a few beers, solid tap selection and the inclusion of zero alcohol beer on tap is nice. Friendly service. As to the chicken, hands down one of the best chicken burgers I’ve ever had (crispy skin one). hHeat level is a bit oversold, had a few ‘evil’ tenders and they were more than manageable.

Recently reopened. Very nice craft beer offering. Nice renovation. Very friendly service. Extremely average and expensive, mostly chicken food offering.

Very enjoyable street party at the Saracens Head with live music and a variety of craft beers, gin and rum. There wasn't any cider, which was a shame, but the chicken was great and the fries were crispy and well seasons. They have converted the pokies room into a proper gaming room with 2 pool tables, pinball and arcade games - much more family friendly.

Having had The Hot Chicken Project many times in Geelong I went with a lot of excitement and was hyping it up to my friends and I wasn’t disappointed. The HCP pop is just as good as in Geelong, the fried chicken i juicy, tender and full of flavour. The spices are spot on and taste e exactly as I know it. It really is great to see there has been nothing skipped including the menu and the baskets you eat from. Speaking to one of the staff members I found out of the chefs were over from Geelong ensuring the quality of the product! Certainly not something I would have every week (even though I could easily!) I will be making a few visits and hope it can stay around for a lot longer!!

Beautiful building, nice atmosphere and live music was great - that’s the 3 stars. The food - not so great. We were expecting a pub meal, but the waitress explained their new menu, and raved about the new Michelin chef and the American style chicken they were doing. We embraced it, and went for it despite thinking we’d come for a pub meal. I ordered chicken tenders plus a side (fries) for almost $30. It was at best what I’d expect of a kids meal served in plastic trays. Tenders were okay, if you were a kid that wanted a fairly simple mean. Fries were quite hard and boring. And sauces - you have to pay extra for. All up it was about $100 for 2 chicken burgers, chicken tenders and 3 soft drinks. Fairly steep considering.

Great fried chicken! Tasty, juicy, crispy, everything you want in a fried chicken. Plus pickles!

Very cool and modern looking pub. the Saracens head has a very nice selection of beer. The male toilets were flooded but I'm sure that's not a regular thing. Unless that's part of an upcoming pool feature? Great for a pint in a laid back atmosphere.

Came to try the Hot Chicken Project and left satisfied! Grabbed a burger - chicken was excellent, rest was pretty eh though. Service was great. It was SUPER quiet for a Saturday night too, so the atmosphere wasn't great... Hopefully a one off.

Dirty menus with food and drink all over them. We ordered the Tempura Onion rings for Entree and requested that.
Apart from not arriving till after the main meal they were a like a supermarket crumbed product.
Wrong meal delivered and then waited for a further 10mins for it to come out.
Salad consisted of Lettuce a little grated carrot a little red onion and a tiny bit of red capsicum. No Tomato and no Cucumber. As there were only us and another 2 people dining. Very poor experience 😞

DISAPPOINTED
We came for an early Saturday night dinner before seeing a play locally.
The inside of the pub is very attractive with a beer garden out the back which encloses the wood-fired pizza oven.
The music was a bit too loud for conversing & the room became very loud when it got busy.
My side plate had old bits of food stuck to it. The other side plates, while looking clean, had a bumpy texture of bits stuck to them - poor rinsing in the dishwasher? This made me wonder about the cleanliness of the bowls that our mains were served in.
She had garfish & chips which was ok. He had beef brisket burger & was underwhelmed.
I had caesar salad which is supposed to have crispy speck but it was very soggy. The charred bread in it was also soggy - how long had it been sitting in the kitchen?
Afterwards we had to wait on a slowly moving line to pay the bill.
I would come back for drinks only.

Visited Saracens for after work Friyay drinks and it was packed which in turn meant it was extremely acoustic and noisy.. a few footy goers along with many other after work groups. We seen an antipasto platter come out and it looked great so we had to have one! Was okay but probably looked better than it tasted, the arancini balls were the best part. For dins we ordered wood oven pizzas and they were delicious...thin crispy base with refined yet tasty toppings.

Schnitzel was very generous sizing and the pepper sauce was a good consistency. Very nice venue would recommend for anyone who loves quality pub meals.

Been here a few times. We had some pizzas last time that were pretty good. The chips are crispy! Plenty of them and super crunchy!
Pretty poor range of beers on tap with only 1 hoppy beer (thankfully local)
The female staff have always been super-friendly. Really nice! Every one of them lovely.
The male staff should let the females have their shifts or at least learn from them about providing a pleasurable experience. If it's a drag to serve people, learn to wash some dishes.
I like the fit out. Plenty of natural light. Nice beer garden.

Having worked near the Saracens Head Hotel for over 14 years, I (Amanda) have partaken in many group work lunches and after work drinks at this establishment over time. The food has always been your classic pub style fare with the added bonus of the outdoor wood oven, producing a point of difference with this style of pizza over other pubs in the area. Today we were invited to the Saracens Head Hotel to experience the new menu that the new Head Chef has creatively put together. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of the Saracens Head Hotel.

Food was excellent would definitely recommend the food, however the service was terrible. I ordered wings for myself I requested the blue cheese sauce to not be put on the plate due to a serious food allergy. Sure enough it was on the plate, when I asked the server to remove it and explained why it can't be on my plate she said but it is good and the original server hadn't made note of it and walked away.

Saracens Head Hotel is a popular and stylish pub located in the Adelaide CBD serving many classic dishes with a contemporary twist. The venue is beautifully understated with exposed brick walls and rich dark wood furnishings. Industrial light fittings and splashes of white paint give the place a modernised touch.

Saracens Head is a pub located on Carrington Street, in the quieter part of the CBD. Set in a double storey character building, customers are greeted by the main bar as you walk through the main entrance. The interior is a clever mix of old and new with a modern dining area that looks into the beer garden. The menu is modern Australian with starters, pizzas, mains and your classic pub grub.

A decent portion of delicious food served quickly.
Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff and an attractive dining area :)
Shared the pan-fried chicken breast on the bone and roasted veg pizza and they were perfect.
The place was good overall. The ambience was pretty decent. The pizzas were good. We tried the all meat and smoked chicken. Service was not up to the mark though. They can improve on this aspect. Overall a good experience.

If a satisfying pub meal experience is what you're after bypass Saracens Head and maybe try Coopers Ale House 300m down the road because you will be disappointed if you stay. We visited after an early lunch and we're looking for that satisfying, filling pub meal. What we ended with was a chicken pizza that was 97% cheese, 3% chicken that was quite possibly served on a base that was ordered in and salt and pepper calamari that though nice, lacked salt and pepper and was missing the tartare sauce that was going to make the dish. We had to ask for it.

It is a shame when the chips are the highlight because after eating here you'll maybe want to stop at a business that makes both seafood and pizzas to make up for this sad experience.

Beer was cold, the food was colder and the staff were freezing!. I felt like a real inconvienence from the moment I walked in. Patronised from the moment I ordered a beer during 'happy hour' and made to feel like an idiot for paying with an Amex, from then I wished I didn't have to deal with the staff, but don't worry, with their lack of eye contact and friendlyness the feeling seemed to be mutual.
I thought the lady I delt with was cold...and then the food arrived. I'm assuming it was cold purely by the time it took to get from ordering to the table.
Do I dare complain? Do I dare send it back?
I look right and see her behind the bar...best I say nothing, eat it and feel sorry for the experience.
With 5 other pubs in the area, I'll give you one guess where it won't be.

Dry chicken snitzel, ordered and paid extra for vegetables which I never received, even after the waitress telling me she would bring some back. Paid for a whole meal and ate 1/4 and I wasn't the only one. Don't recommend Eatting here!

Poor quality, cannot recommend. Went there for a Sunday lunch. I ordered crumbed fish and chips and the best description I can offer is that the taste was neutral i.e. tasteless. Cooked OK, and the chips was passable, but the fish was absolutely bland and the tartare-style dressing weak. The other order was for salt and chilli squid. Best I can say that it was a very lazy effort but the truth of it is that there was no identifiable salt much less chilli on the coating. It was totally devoid of any taste. Ditto the accompanying dip. And not only was the squid only partially coated but it was also soggy. The best part in summary was the jug of cold water! And the wait also was a bit too long. We'll never come back to this place and I seriously recommend against it under any circumstances. And obviously numerous other dissatisfied diners agree.

Waste of time and money. Went for a lunch spent $34 dollars on a steak and waited 1 hour asked when it would be ready they said 5 min 20 min later it came out cold and old mash like they cooked it in the morning and reheated and it was still cold, NEVER AGAIN.Dirty plate had to ask for another dirty walls-plugs-aircon-ceiling-water bottle looked like it had never been cleaned DON'T WAIST YOUR TIME !

Squidgy. Had a work place farewell here recently and I ordered the Flathead...what a disgrace. It was overcooked, dry and very salty. The best part was the salad and there wasn't much of that on the plate. Suspect the flathead came from overseas - it couldn't be Australian and be that bad. Overall....appalling performance Saracens!!

Never again. Worse pizza ive ever had and my girlfriends burger was a charcol mess..jack dainels and flat coke and extremly rude staff
Alkaliman
Bye bye budgie. Went there last Friday for a farewell. Can recommend the eye fillet. Eighty of us turning up did not overwhelm the staff (we pre-ordered) and everyone was fed and watered. Compared to what passes in Adelaide for pub service, high recommended.

We went to this hotel, due to The Beijing being closed for renovations and had to be at a Play at 8pm.

On what planet does an average hotel front bar charge $15.50 for wedges??
Have potatoes been washed in the tears of saints and peeled by sacred virgins?

Maybe if you had a wider choice of quick snacks and they were realistically priced, you'd be busy on a Saturday night.
Foodie Quine
I like this pub and the menu - there is some good options available eg. Wood oven pizza, and a decent wine list to match. Avoid the Fish & Chips though - definitely frozen - and very very dry.

Quickly becoming my new favourite pub! So much to like - nice wine list, menu is super, great vibe, trivia on Tuesdays, party crowd later in the week.

Sea and Vines Visit. I went to Sea and Vines via the Saracens organised buses. I had an enjoyable day but it could have been better.

The buses left nearly 30mins late, this was annoying given that we were on a tight time schedule and were told to get to the pub by 930 an hour before the planned departure. We then went to Middlebrook which was nice but the line for getting a drink was outrageous (45mins honestly!). This is not the fault of the Saracens Head. But the ticket was $80 and covered entry and a bus ride. A pretty expensive bus ride at about $60...we weren't really given anything, a welcome drink or some finger food would have been nice. Oh well

The after party which was held was nothing special, In fact the 'food' offered was poor and overpriced. $15 for half a schnitzel cut in strips with a dozen chips and stuffed in a paper cylinder? Annoying after a long day drinking at sea and vines. The staff weren't particularly considerate either.

Decent day all in all but next year ill look to go with a different pub
I Know Food Of Adelaide
Food Average - Staff Horrid. To be fair to the chefs, the food wasn't bad. The steak was overcooked and a bit tough but all in all not bad. The front of house staff however were beyond rude!! They were completely incompetent when taking orders!! It took me 10 minutes to order a steak! And they were very rude and crass when I kept correcting them as when they repeated my order it was wrong! There is no excuse for staff to be this rude, particularly when they had no idea what they were doing! They also spilt sauce when giving us our food with no apology or offer of napkins to clean up etc nor did they offer us replacement sauce! I'd go back - but ONLY when the current staff have been replaced

Went to Saracens for lunch yesterday, the whole lunch experience was ruined got my lunch finally when the rest of the table had finished eating theirs. Ordered fish & chips $25 and it was so very ordinary, should have been a counter lunch for more like $15.
Rest of the table weren't wrapped with their meals, wont eat there again.

How Big?. Generous serves and generous flavor - great food at this pub!

Confusing but will be back. The Saracen is a great spot! The layout seems to be a strange one but it works for this place. They have there own wood oven which is great to see and their food while like a pub has it’s own little twists to it,. We ventured here last week:

Good - The pizza’s, they are always good here. This time we got the Spicy Chorizo & Salami one and its great. The base is so crispy while the toppings were just right.

Not-So Southern – We also had the Southern Style Chicken which was a special on the night... it was a marinated chicken breast served over polenta with a capsicum relish. I don’t know what this was... im unsure what the cusine was here. Southern Style Chicken sounds like American deep south, but this wasn’t that. Was it itallian? The polenta would suggest that but that chicken marinate was not itallian. It was a confusing one. The chicken was a tad dry and the polenta wasn’t polenta, it was crumbly and wasn’t the smooth texture polenta should be.

Rating: 6/10
Will I be back?: I will, look they tried something different with the chicken... for me it didn’t work but the pizza was amazing and ordinarily the pizza’s are great!

Expensive. Does $15 seem like a lot for a bowl of wedges?
As far as I can tell they're not handcut from potatoes made of gold. Just regular frozen potato wedges from a bag, like everywhere else.

The slider burgers literally slid off my board into my mouth, so delicious!!

TOP SPOT FOR A GREAT MEAL. The food at the Saracens is great and can be described as high end pub grub although the prices are more than reasonable. I’ve eaten here a number of times including with larger groups of people and no one has been disappointed. The refurb has turned this old pub into a fantastic place to dine and with the addition of the outdoor wood oven you can also have get tasting pizzas. My personal favourite is the Saracens schnitzel which you pay a little extra for but it’s well worth it.

Went there for lunch today, had the beef schnitzel veg & chips and a woofired lamb pizza. Food was good, Prices not too bad $50 for both of us with one pint of beer, a bit more than what we were expecting to spend but at least the food was yummy. Beef Schnitzel was tender, chips good not cooked in old oil. Veges were fresh and cooked perfectly. Pizza base was really good, lamb tender too. Menu on Urbanspoon needs updating as it's old prices have gone up and menu changed

Been there are a few time. Always happy with the quality of the food and service. Happy to recommend.

Had a meal there last night - the food was ok, just nothing special - they messed up our order with a friend ordering the same time there waiting 20 mins longer than everyone else on the table.. would i go back? if it was my local, yes.. but since it isnt - no!! you can find far nicer local places in town!!

Bad Service. We will never be attempting to make a booking or dine or drink at the Saracens again. We booked a table for 10 a month in advance, rang a number of times to confirm our booking and even spoke to them 30minuets before we arrived to organize setting up a tab. When we arrived they claimed they were "setting a table up for us", 30minuets later we are still standing around waiting to be seated. Then we told with hostility that they were finding a table for us. An hour after waiting we receive a jug of coke and a bottle of cheap sparkles with four glasses for our group of 10. We ended up calling The Austral, they had a table ready for us in minuets of arriving with bottles of water and menus and then took our order at our seats. Our $600 was well spent at The Austral. Thank you Saracens for showing us your true colours.
Xasper
Xasper. Sorry to say, ate there for first time last night and my dish was awful. Bug and scallop udon noodles - overwhelming taste of garlic and chilli and literally the whole dish included about 10 udin noodles. Staff called the dish "pud thai" when placing it on table which was a little confusing. I recommend sticking to pizzas at this joint...

Pub grub.. Last visit I had the lamb salad. It was enormous, succulent and very generous on feta (always appreciated).
I've been here a few times and on average, I'd give it 7/10.
Nom
Saracens Bland. This is like every other made-over pub in South Australia. It's only outstanding feature was the ratio of old people to under 30's. I ordered the pie and my partner ordered the shark, both of which were incredibly bland. For the price we paid I would have expected much more.
Furthermore, the TVs playing Shark Tale in the dining area was very agitating. Would not recommend.
Bubba
We have the salmon totally amazing. The King Henry pork was beautifully cooked in the outside wood oven, service was good not over top which suits the style of the place. FINALLY a pub that hasn't tried to hard and over modernized the place, really nice feel. Not cheap but as the saying goes you get what you pay for.. Will be back probably have to book when word gets out.
Danko
Best Steak n Red. Get the lads together make sure everyone orders the rib eye steak and wak a bottle of red from the Schwarz Wine Co on the table and watch your friendship status rise! You will be there best mate forever!
Appetite For Change
Unexpectedly good!. This backstreet pub has had a great revamp - feels inviting, modern but with charm, with exposed brick walls a nice touch. Great menu and decent wine list - lots of choice. Salt and pepper squid was lovely, as was the wagyu burger and prawn salad. Serves were much larger than expected too. Would love to try the wood-fired pizzas - they looked delicious. Will be back.

Pleasant surprise. To be honest, I was not expecting much of this place. I think all of us tend to evaluate restaurants and dishes based on our previous experience. I am fortunate to have lived in one of the greatest cities in the world when it comes down to food. And unfortunately I find hard to get something more than the average in Adelaide.
Anyway, Saracens Head was a pleasant surprise. It's a cosy place with a small beer garden. They have a wood oven in the alfresco area which they use to prepare some dishes besides the pizzas. The problem here is that it's not linked to the kitchen, so they have to walk in the dining area to get to the kitchen all the time.
I've ordered the 'King Henry Pork Rib Eye' which was baked in the wood oven. It was the best pork I have had in the city, very tender and baked to perfection and it matched perfectly to the pear chutney. However the fat part which was supposed to be crispy crackling was a bit chewy. The rosti was very well seasoned and very tasteful. Overall a great dish.
Will come back to try other dishes and maybe pizza (still in search for an outstanding one).

So one out of three dishes were a hit at Saracen’s. For me, I feel like my visit didn’t really do the place justice due to all the mistakes we made with ordering. I’ve decided to give it one more go with some slightly different dishes before I make up my mind about whether to recommend it. It was completely packed out on a Wednesday night so they must be doing something right – I just have to find out what it is!

Now how come I didn't know that this pub existed? I must have driven straight past it a few times. I wanted to dine there one Sunday night, however it was so busy that there was no tables for me. I was able to go back the Sunday after after reserving a booking.
Feed Me, Adelaide
As you would be aware from our reviews by now – our ultimate preference is coarse and slightly pink beef but this turned out just nice.

Saracen's Head Hotel is worth a visit even if you are not going to see a show at the Arts Theatre! Other options on the menu include steak, pork steaks, salmon, fish and chips, schnitzel and pasta so there's something for everyone.
The Saracens Head has a comfortable restaurant at 82 Carrington Street in the city. There is plenty of seating inside with comfortable seating and solid wooden tables. Outside is a beer garden with a few tables and an outdoor pizza oven.
