Came here on the recommendation of the gorgeous Isabelle Bach and got the custard bun and “chicken tail bun” aka cocktail bun. Oh, they did not disappoint. You could smell the freshly baked buns before you see the shop and the lovely soft and fluffy buns are testament to the deliciousness of their baked buns. Generous fillings and not too sweet, and custard bun had a yummy crackly top. I would go back again and again for them. Just not for the egg tart though. Didn’t like it at all - not eggy nor custardy smooth, and quite expensive at $2 a piece.
My favourite Asian bakery place in town! Been there every time when I'm in the area. Consistent great flavours. Love custard polo bun so much! Have to try it hot.
Seriously peeps, who doesn't love this place! Yummy bunny bursts of delicious savoury or sweet buns! I have been buying these baked goods for years now and the secret is? consistency! And that's why they last and last and hopefully will be in my foodie hit list for years to come! My favourite, would have to be the spring onion! Mmmm, want one now!
The custard polo bun is my favorite. I didn't expect to get such authentic polo buns here in Adelaide. It would be amazing if I can have some authentic Hong Kong milk tea to drink with the buns.
I went shopping in the markets the other week and happened to walk past this shop, I decided to buy a chicken bun and a sweet red bean bun. The staff were very friendly and even offered to warm them up for me. The buns were absolutely lovely, they tasted fresh, the buns were soft, honestly a fantastic place to stop for a snack! Will definitely be going back. :)
A classic example of "don't judge a book by its cover". From a quick glance, you wouldn't expect anything good come from this small simple shop in adelaide central.
BUT!
try the cheesy pocket, custard polo, and bbq pork and you will be amazed. The bread was just soft. Ask the lady to microwave it for you before you enjoy your bun.
I kid you not! it will blow your mind.
The absolute best Chinese bun bakery ever! I crave their bread buns every now and again. My favourite is the cheesy pocket which will always run out towards the second half of the day! They can heat up the bread for you to eat straight away and the cheese just oozes out. Bread is a nice soft and spongy texture. Walking towards the bakery you can smell the wonderful aroma of their breads. I've been eating their buns since childhood and their buns have always been consistently good!
Nanna's hot bake has a variety of sweet and savory buns to choose from. My fav would be the pork buns. They were tasty and succulent. The kaya bun however was not as fragrant as expected.
4.9!! What?! We just had to visit this place to see what the hype was about. We were dubious when we saw it was just one cake fridge with rows of buns that seemingly all looked the same. However. As I walked away and bit into my Chicken hot pot bun (ask for it to be warmed in the microwave) I got it. The bun was fesh, the filling delicious. I followed it up with a coconut scroll which was also delish. I'll be sure to pop by Nanna's again.
A great place to finish off a meal in Chinatown. Always busy and fresh. Staff are very polite and work fast. Heated Kaya bun would be my recommendation.
Great Chinese buns. Perfect for a little midweek indulgence. My tip - grab a satisfying bargain lunch from the nearby china town food court then head here for a quick sweet hit to finish the meal. Buns are light, soft and humbly mind blowingly delicious. Who knew Nanna could bake like this??
Best chinese buns bakery in Adelaide, they do sweet and savoury buns. Price is reasonable, ive been going back to this place years and never disappointed.
I was first introduced to this bakery by my boyfriend. He was raving on about how they make the best buns in Adelaide. I've passed this place a few times but never thought much of it.. oh, how I missed out! The buns are soft, sweet and truly delicious. My favourite is the curry bun :)
Always delicious. Green coconut and custard buns are divine. Extra special when warm. Always service with a smile.
Nom. Their Red Bean Bun is the best in town! and is cheap too!
Great food at a great price. A very unique bakery which is very popular with market goers. Its very hard to not buy something when you walk past at those prices. Bbq pork bun a must after a big night out.
Consistently good. This place is the best - way way better than the franchise bakery around the corner. Hot dog buns are awesome and my god, the beef curry puffs! Too good!
YUM!!. I always go for the sweet options. My faves are the Custard Polo and the Butter & Sugar buns. If you're eating them straight away ask for them to be hot... So so delicious!
They have a variety of savoury flavours, too.
More Buns!. I'm addicted to these soft and delicious asian buns, usually i am a complete sweet tooth with no interest in the savoury items but i haven't even tried the sweets here. I can't go past the Satay Chicken or the BBQ Pork. It is a great quick lunch (or even snack) when you're in the market and don't have time to sit down for lunch!
Tucked away down the back end of the Market is Nana Hot Bake. A little hole in the wall selling Asian style buns filled with all sorts of good things.
They range from the Westernish – their hotdog buns are a kid’s favourite – through to the firmly Eastern. Pork Floss? And I seem to recall a chilli and anchovy one. Or am I imagining it?
Their middle of the road numbers – the satay chicken bun, the barbecue pork, the beef curry and so on – are a treat though. Smallish pockets of slightly sweet bread filled with savory and sweet stuffings. Ask them and they’ll zap them in a microwave for a few seconds so that they’re piping hot. Although, to be honest, they are pretty good bunss just as they are. The star attraction are the curry puffs. Flaky pastry filled with beef and potato curry and just brilliant. They are dirt cheap. From memory, nothing over $3, so you can buy a few and still have change. Of course just around the corner is Breadtop. Big, slick and glossy, with a much wider range, bigge
No visit to the Adelaide Central Markets is complete without a stop at Nanna Hot Bake. This is a family run business that has been serving up delicious, warm buns since 1989...
Been coming here since I was a child. With a variety of sweet and savoury options you’ll never be disappointed.
My top 3 choices would have to be the hot dog, custard polo, and curry puff.
100% worth it and highly recommend.

📝: BEST ASIAN BREADS EVER 😍. Thanks @hello.imnikki for recommending me this! Hidden gem in Chinatown, near Central Market. A must visit if you’re in Adelaide.
❤️: Seriously everything we got was so good. A place definitely worth multiple visits. The pastry of the Curry Puff was so flakey and buttery, the filling was so tasty. The combination was like heaven in the mouth. The breads were perfect, both sweet and savory. Price was very cheap and affordable as well. Super impressed!
Highly recommend Taro bun, red bean bun, coconut bun and pork floss bun! They are my favorite buns in Adelaide!! Please don’t buy too many buns as they always are sold out quickly lol
The best taro buns 😍 generous and real fillings as you get actual taro in the buns. Polo buns are amazing too. Knew they were Malaysian as tasted like what we get back home 😍
Bought a chicken curry puff and a nanna hotdog bun and they were amazing and I was so shocked how delicious they were. The pastry for the curry puff was a bomb and I felt like I was in heaven eating them in the morning. Definitely recommend this place to everyone.

These guys are an Adelaide icon and have been here for yearssss. Defs worth a try if visiting Chinatown. Their pastries are always so yummy and very reasonable, probably one of the cheapest lunches you can get in the city area. Never change Nannas ❤️
The Egg tarts are very yummy especially when fresh so to is the deluxe hotdog, nestled in little market area reminiscent of Little Saigon in Melbourne skip the breadtop and try some homemade baked goodness
