Review The Captain Of Aireys Inlet - Aireys Inlet

Pamela Anton
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here; pizzas were all absolutely delicious (we had Mr Oz, prosciutto, magharita and the Lemon & prawn pizzas), service staff were delightful and friendly. To top it off, the dessert (we had berry crumble pizza dessert and brownie) was amazingly! We ate too much, but all worth it! Definitely coming back. Keep up the great work.

Simply Fabulous. The pizza is amazing. Can highly recommend the Pork and Pear or the Chorizo and Prawns. The pizzas are really good, great bases and well thought through toppings. This is just the start as to why they deserve their "Capitan" title. The staff are wonderful and make the whole experience just delightful. Do ask for beverage pairing for your food and you won't be disappointed. The important thing to keep in mind is you must save room for desert. The surprise was just how good desert is. We had the Gin and Tonic tart, and it is to die for! Get a matching Gin and T to drink and you will leave not just satisfied but delighted! All in all great food, amazing staff and just a very enjoyable experience.

The pizza here is excellent. Nice comfortable seating inside and great service. Wasn't expecting such good pizza in Aireys inlet. Well done guys.

Some of the best wood fire pizza I have had. It’s hard to find good vegan pizza and this definitely hit the spot! Would highly recommend! Johanna was super catering and very lovely, great service all round. I’d book in advance to save yourself a spot!

The best pizza on the coast, in my opinion! Great rest stop that isn’t crazy packed with people or seagulls like some of the other/bigger towns along the Great Ocean Road. Food is spectacular, service is wonderful, friendly staff who care about their customers. All these years up and down the coast, never thought of stopping at Aireys Inlet. The Captain has definitely remedied that and will be forever on my list for a beautiful wood fired pizza fix when I’m down this way next. Do yourself a favour, make a stop at The Captain of Aireys and try one of their pizzas, you will not be disappointed!
Kristian Susanj
Don’t bother getting pizza from any of the surrounding towns this place is definitely worth the drive, well up there with the best pizzas I’ve had!

Don't fool yourself, if you're heading to the surfcoast and on the lookout for a quality dining experience make the captain of Aries your destination, the pizza that you will be confronted with is hands down the most divine breathtaking form of traditional wood fired cuisine I've ever encountered in my life , I never actually thought pizza could be so good wow !! From a background of the chef industry and Italian heritage I will happily say there is not a more astronomically exquisite pizza of this kind that I have come across to date ,this is literally " food art " to say the least , the prawn and chorizo is my pick ;)
Arabella S
Absolutely no flaws. Service was super friendly and attentive. The food was also delicious and you could tell it was prepared with love. We will definitely be back!

Stayed down here and grabbed some pizzas takeaway. Walked in to pick it up and the first that hit me was the great smell. Just smashed them down and they were the best pizzas I have ever eaten ! Thank you !

We drive in from Geelong for the best pizzas every time. The staff are always friendly and laid back. Kids are welcome. We just love the place.
Aaron Lewtas
Pizzas are the best on the coast and the breakfast corn fritters are sooooooooo good, yum!
Kylie Clayton
Amazing wood fired pizza! Such a great variety of pizza's to suit even the fussiest eater. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Fantastic service - nothing is even an issue.

Johanna and Rich are the perfect hosts. The atmosphere is so inviting and relaxing. The pizzas are the absolute best I have ever had. Great use of local sources from coffee and beer to the contents of the amazing pizza. You must try this place. It left me longing to cone come back.
Stephen Ramadge
Great staff. Very friendly and helpful. The pizza was one of the best I've ever had.

Without question I ate the best breakfast I've ever eaten here last Sunday. Corn fritters done so beautifully with the freshest most beautiful eggs. Their coffee is awesome and the service (always with a smile) is brilliant. I love both the savoury and dessert pizzas too, it's not just about the breakfasts. This is where the locals eat long after the tourists have left for the summer, and that's a pretty good sign. Do yourself a favour and do what the locals do....they're usually spot on with where to go, and in Aireys they're such a discerning lot 😉

What a beautiful place! Food is absolutely delicious and the staff are so incredibly lovely!! Definitely pop in for a coffee, meal or ice cream if you're in the area. We'll be back again. Thank you for a wonderful experience!! ♡

Equal to any I ate in Italy. My family all lived our pizzas. My 11yo loved watched watching the guys prep. Simple good quality ingredients. Highly recommended

Our regular eat-out when we are down the coast...the No. 1 choice for our girls & us grown ups. Delicious pizzas & great ice cream! Also service & staff are very friendly. Highly recommended!

Lovely to see Richie and Grafton today at their restaurant The Captain of Aireys, so nice to see them both doing well & doing what they do best sorry we missed Johanna,Lisa and the Babies

Best pizza and service in the region come and eat here whenever we're at the beach and live the big friendly smiles as well as amazing food which greets us every time

Went to Aireys for long weekend, we were very tired so decided to order take away. Got the pizzas back to our room and was a little disappointed in the amount of topping on pizza. Although they were ok I was still starving after finishing half a pizza which cost us $22. I just think they either need to add more toppings or reduce their prices.
Aust Gregor
Absolutely fantastic pizzas and the ice cream is great too. Staff were really friendly and helpful and it's an easy place to get to. We'll be back!

We stopped here for lunch on the way back from our camping trip on the great ocean road.

The pork and pear pizza was absolutely amazing. Great base and topping.

The kids pizza went down very well.

The beetroot salad was nice and fresh but the balance between sweet and sour was not great. Too sour for our liking.

Coffee was ok not great.
Sarah Cutler
Came here for lunch as we were passing through on our Great Ocean road trip and was not disappointed. The restaurant has a great vibe with all the classic pizzas on the menu, with a few added extras. We ordered the special starter of the day, a flatbread with rosemary, salt, evoo and olives, and for mains, shared a garlic prawn and chorizo pizza.
The crust was so thin and perfectly balanced for the toppings on the pizza. Didn't think I was hungry enough to eat as much as we ordered, but polished it off as it was so delicious.
They serve Timboon Icecream (a personal fav we also stopped at on our trip) and the dessert menu looked great.
Would definitely go to The Captain fo Aireys again.
Suzanne
First time diners at the Captain. Will definitely return. We shared a “delicious” potato and chives pizza . The crust was perfect.
Great coffee too. Prices reasonable.Service prompt and friendly staff. Thankyou.

Wow! Here’s the bench mark in service.
Easter long weekend. As the signs were being brought in, chairs on tables, till counted, doors closing, two lads ask for a quick refresher “ a work meeting” thinking we didn’t have a chance in hell, to our amazement the young female host says sure but you’ll have to be really quick and put up with us cleaning up around you. About an hour later and a couple of furphy’s the wiser we finished up having a chat and a laugh with which I presume was the captain! So easily and understandably could’ve turned us away but instead showed such great hospitality, captain by name, captain by nature.
Just to add, the pizza IS gourmet and not gormet!just a lesson for those dishing up McCain-omino’s cafe style pizzas, come try you might learn something and have a great feed.
In the words of the former governor of California, “I’ll be back”

After having the most underwhelming breakfast and coffee at Onda food house, I was on the hunt for good coffee. This place was empty at 10.30 and I did wonder why I did not want another flop. The waiter with a welcoming smile and friendly attitude standing at the front door convinced me to give it a try. We ordered our coffees and even though it’s a pizza restaurant they made a very good coffee and finally o got my hit and it was happy days. I strongly recommend if you just need coffee then make this your pit stop.

Seriously gotta be one of the best pizza’s I’ve ever had! Variety of pizza could be improved but what they have is pretty good

Love this place and return often
Happy to drive the 40 mins from my house for it

Had a lovely lunch here today. The pork and pear pizza was fantastic, as was the gorgonzola and mushroom. Lovely thin base and nicely cooked crust. Treated ourselves to an ice cream. Cininmon and maple was devine. Will definitely be back next time we're down that way
Judy
Ordered two pizzas to take away. Polite service. Pizza ready on time as advised.

Pizzas were fantastic great base, thin, crunchy crust and toppings just right. Ordered the Mr Oz and Pork and pear, both very tasty.

When next in Aireys Inlet I will have a different variety.

Awsome Saturday night dinner with my family. The food was superb & the service was excellent. The pizzas are beautiful, just doughy enough wood fired pizza, topped with just the right amount of quality topping. We all enjoyed an individual pizza & still had room for dessert. My favourite choice for dessert is the chocolate brownie & the kitchen is happy to swap the Timboon vanilla ice cream for one of their other available flavours. My parents can't go past sharing their dessert pizza special. The Captain of Aireys has a lovely drinks list which includes many beverages from the Geelong-Otway region. Also you can't go past a cosy table by the fire in winter.
Lovely place. Accessible (but a bit tight). Clearly marked gluten free. Freshly prepared. I had a gluten free pizza and beetroot salad. All freshly prepared so can ask for dairy free options, but not explicitly offered. Almond milk for a mocha. No accessible toilet, but there is one across the road at the car park for the walk to the lighthouse.

Dreaming of pizza? You're in for a pleasant surprise next time you're in coastal Aireys Inlet. The Captain of Aireys opened in 2014 and has established itself as THE pizza place in the Aireys-Anglesea area. So much so, that it's strongly advised that you call ahead to make a booking. Luckily we secured a table over the busy Christmas/new year week.

As we drove to dinner, I made an early decision to pass up the pizza and order a healthier salad instead (there's a delicious sounding option of oven-roasted beetroot, rocket and Meredith goats cheese with a mint and balsamic dressing). However, from the minute we stepped through the door, all good intentions vanished. The mouth watering smells drifting from the woodfired oven won me over.

With friendly and welcoming staff, we were soon settled in the outdoor area (there are also indoor tables). Built for all weather, there's a tub of blankets available in the corner, and a plastic awning to keep out the rain. Unfortunately we visited when it was 35 degrees so it was a bit stuffy, but nothing that a cool drink couldn't alleviate.

Children are well-catered for, with pencils and paper for entertainment and a children's menu featuring the popular Hawaiian, as well as a margarita-type pizza. There's also a potato pizza for the kids. The portions are generous and well-priced at $12. With a big thumbs up from our kids, not a single scrap of food was left on any of the plates.

Not entirely giving up on my quest for nutrition, I ordered the Sweet Tate pizza with Napoli, mozzarella, spinach, roast sweet potato, garlic, goats cheese and walnuts. Vital stats: good quality toppings, thin crispy base, with crusts that were the perfect halfway point between crispy and mouth-wateringly soft. My husband preferred the prawn and chorizo pizza, which I did sneakily sample, and it was delicious. A rocket and Parmesan salad was our chosen side dish - a decent sized serve, but ideally I would have liked a touch more Parmesan. It is also licensed with a good range of beers and wine.

If you still have room for dessert, there's a sweet pizza option (apple and rhubarb special the night we were there) or a selection of Timboon Fine Ice Cream, including salted caramel, strawberry, or mint choc chip. We skipped the dessert, but plenty around us happily succumbed to temptation.

Last but not least, the service was quick and efficient. Piping hot pizzas were served straight from the woodfired oven, and were clearly made the minute we'd ordered. We were in and out of the restaurant in 45 minutes...just what you want on a 35 degree night with three young children in tow. We'll definitely be back more than once before the summer is through. Great thin pizza. The base is crisp and tasty .
The toppings are fresh and not too runny. Service is always friendly and the whole place is no fuss.
Even the coffee is good.
It's a favourite in Aireys.

Really enjoyed the food and service
Pizzas were tasty not greasy.
Wine list was interesting and lovely selection of Timboon ice cream on offer
Small Creek
Expensive and small pizzas. Good base, tasty toppings but not very fresh ingredients, sadly. Inside is humid in the summer, great view, slow service.
Queen Of Food
Great thin pizza bases which don't make you feel heavy. The pizzas are nice and light and full of flavour. The only thing to improve I would say is more cheese! Who doesn't love a cheesy pizza! Great friendly service and welcoming atmosphere. The ice cream is also absolutely delicious! Must have the ice cream!! Worth going down if your staying on the coast.

Awesome pizza fresh and tasty worth a visit....
Hidden gem.......... .... right near Ocean !!!
Highly recommended.............. ..............:)))

Beautiful pizzas but you do pay a premium. We ordered a magharita, jinker and potato pizza and all were very tasty with excrllent ingredients.
John Lamp
Lovely pizzas, crisp thin base, high quality toppings. We have been here once before during the Aireys Open Mic Festival. We'll be back ...
Pamela Anderson
Pretty basic pizzas with little variety in menu selection. I have been here 3 times and have reluctantly ordered the same pizza each time because nothing else grabs me. Over priced for what you get, - uninspiring drink selection and way over rated by other reviewers. Only thing going for it, is the convenience of a basic eatery in Aireys.
Chris
Delicious pizzas, excellent selection of local
beers and wine, and service always smooth (even when they
are busy). Must be one of the best places to eat on the Surf Coast. Highly recommended.

So delicious! Super thin bases and crunchy crust, gourmet, sophisticated toppings as well as the classics. A must have if travelling along the coast

Absolutely fantastic. Live in Melbourne but never had pizza that tastes this good. Freshly cooked straight from the oven. Super fast service. Also another 10/10 factor - the service. Beautiful waitress who was very lovely and recommended her personal favorites. Went twice on our 4 night stay in aireys inlet. Love love love!!
Tony
Awesome pizza. Easily my favourite pizza joint! Great pizzas well thought through;). The starter bruschetta was great with all fresh ingredients. A must go!

We popped in for a quick pizza and were thrilled by the deliciousness and the amazing waiting staff! They are under new management (as of December) and have a huge new (and I believe imported) pizza oven, churning out stunning thin crust pizzas!

Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
James Morphy
Absolutely sensational, a must. Done in or take away. Joey is fantastic! Pizzas lovely and salad great. All local ingredients, please give it a try all staff are having a real dip at being the best on the coast and I think they have got there! Highly recommended.
Kim
Excellent friendly relaxed service. Quality ingredients - delish Gluten Free Pizza base with yummy crust.!
Pork & Pear with Gorgonzola is a great choice. My partner had the Chorizo & Prawn Pizza with a locally made beer- all excellent.
We'll be back soon!
This place is awesome. Beautiful pizza with well balanced flavour and a really nice base.the coffee is flawless and the gluten free brownies melt in the mouth. I wanted an ice cream but couldNt squeeze one in. A brilliant addition to Aireys
Aussiegirl
Loved the prawn and Chorizo pizza. Amazing taste combination with the spicy meat yet slightly sour goats cheese accent. Great pizza. But service. Impeccable. Friendly. Knowledgable. And so sweet. Thank you from the city folk looking for something different. Must try.

A must stop on the Great Ocean Road. After dissapointing service along the great ocean road, this place was a refreshing change. The owner, Johanna, was very friendly and helpful. Johanna and her husband have done a great job with the place, it was warm, comfortable and light-hearted. We had the prosciutto pizza, the vegie pizza and the sweet potato salad, which were all absolutely delicious, freshly made and not too heavy. Highly recommended for service, atmosphere and food.

Not at all good. The pizza was mediocre and over priced. Of the 4 pizzas we ordered, there almost no cheese. Very disappointing.

Great pizzas, v friendly staff. We stopped for lunch on the way back to Melbourne on a Sunday. We ate The Captain and the Prawn & Chorizo. The pizzas were delicious, and the staff were very friendly, offering to heat up food for our baby.
Paul
Great pizzas. Went there for sunday lunch perfect thin based pizzas with crisp base and right amount of topping kids also loved it great place to stop when visiting great ocean road
Erick B
The pizza was decent for the area. Pizzas are thin based which is good, but they weren't crispy enough (kind of soggy). If getting takeaway, order well in advance, our 6pm order was ready for pick up at 8pm. Note: The "Captain" and "prawn and garlic" have a slight spice to them so avoid if not into spices (not unbearably hot or anything though)
Marina_white77
Love the Captain. Great pizzas with super friendly staff.
As a coffee snob, the locally roasted coffee is the best u can get along the Great Ocean Rd.
Consistently great.
Andy Stuart-Menteth
Yes. This great little place hits the spot. The pizza dough melts in your mouth. The pizzas are just the right size.
Prawn and chorizo for something tangy. The Hawain if you're feeling like comfort food is fresh and melts in the mouth. Friendly locals run the place. Can get busy but be patient it's worth it!

Such a great addition to Aireys inlet!

The owners are kind, hard working people! They make great pizza with love! Prawn pizzas are both ace!

You always greeted with a big smile! The have transformed the place into something special! Give them a go! You won't regret!
Lani
The captain of overpriced and average pizza, not quite as catchy but far more accurate. The food was at best average we had a margarita which needed more cheese and a sweet tate which was nice even though the base was way too thin and ended up being a soggy mess. Save your money and just go to pizza hut
Trinny
Always greeted with a big smile and always leave with a happy tummy! Two thumbs up!!

Happened to walk in to airleys new pizza restaurant for lunch by complete chance , after being welcomed by very friendly staff our multi choice family selected 3 different pizzas and coffee . Coffee was first class and I'm yet to have had a better pizza . If you want " junk " food don't look here , very fresh ingredients and loads of flavour, highly recommend. Well done to owners and staff .

Love it!!. The pizza is fresh and tasty. My family of five all loved the pizza and we are all looking forward to going back. I would feel very confident to recommend Captain to my friends. As well as the great flavour the service was friendly and efficient, I love good customer service and Captain has it in spades!
Fantastic!!

Amazing new place!!. Tried out the new wood fire pizza shop in airys , instantly impressed by style & finesse of set up!! Very warm friendly staff, within first bite there was amazing flavour! Had the Captain pizza & it was so delicious, mixed great with the beetroot salad! So yummy! Can't wait to go back!!
Carlahuby
Delicious pizza, relaxed environment with friendly staff. The whole family enjoyed the experience. Kids loved the icecream too. We will be returning, for sure
Sandys1973
Disappointing!. Staff were very friendly. Food not so good. Pizza covered with chilli that was not mentiond on the menu, minimal toppings with one piece of Salami on a $24 Captain pizza. $15 Morrocan Sweet Spud salad was 99% spinach leaves, no dressing, 5 or so walnut pieces, some tiny pieces of gorgonzola cheese and 7 shaving of sliced sweet potato. The potato had been charcoaled in the pizza oven for few minutes! They assured us this was how they always made it and that we had been given extra spinach leaves to normal! Feeling like a ripped off tourist. Appalling!
Phillip Biggs
Great new pizza spot. Thoroughly recommend this new addition to Aireys Inlet eateries. Delicious authentic pizza with fresh ingredients and great wine list. The stand-out is the friendly service. Will be back for more pizza and ice-creams for the kids.
Pikturnaite
Simple honest food. Having tasted some very bad and some exceptionally great pizzas through years, got to say this was a pleasant surprise! In short, no fuss, you get what you came for - a decent pizza!
Liv
We LOVED it. Absolute gem. Amazing pizza, great service, excellent wine. Aireys is a lucky little place to have the captain onboard. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
Gatti
Average Pizza. Dined here for dinner after seeing it open. The pizza here is nothing special but also not terrible. It is wood fire oven, but the pizza is average with toppings and base a little disappointing. Nothing authentic. The two pizzas we tried the Margherita pizza was very dull and flavourless, The Prawn and Chorizo had excessive amounts of chilli. Staff very friendly and helpful. All and all there is not much competition in the area for woodfire pizza so can get away with just average.
Crystal_whelan44
The best pizza we've ever had!. This place is absolutely amazing! Without a doubt the best pizzas I've ever had (you have to try the lemon and garlic prawn!) combined with a wonderful drinks menu offering locally sourced wine and beer. Fabulous service on top of all this make this little gem unbeatable! We will definitely be back and will make the two hour drive from Melbourne to Aireys just to dine here again. One of the best dining experiences we have had in ages!
