Review Due South - Albany

Good food, friendly staffs, and fun ambience. Best to be here with friends and watch your fav. team on TV. Love their chicken wings and special shout out for the chicken parfait 🙂 will come back for these! and definitely try another on the menu list.

Daily special Marron good, Korean Style from memory. Sauce very nice and went well with marron. Daily special Whiting good Cheeseburger average... The burger pattie was overcooked and tough and frankly a key down. Enormous amount of bacon a bit disproportionate to the other ingredients. Chips very good Zucchini balls/fritters tasty, but a bit soggy possibly due to the coconut curry sauce which was very nice Soy flat white... NOT good. Tasted like supermarket soy. Watery, weak coffee. Was like a dash of soy milk in a weak long black Great location Lovely staff, great service

The staff are amazing, the atmosphere is good, they are dog friendly (we had 6 dogs to 8 humans) and the beer list is great, but the food was a bit of a let down. The burger was overcooked, the bin had a weirdly large amount of flour and the pickles were impossibly thin (good chips though). The missus said the fish and chips were average. That being said, the wings were on point. I'd go back for a few beers, but maybe not a meal.

Friendly staff, massive building that gives a very pleasant atmosphere. The views from the outdoors are amazing, especially with the sunset. Had the mussels and they're pretty hot 🥵 The sides are quite big, suitable for 2.

Fresh tasty pub food, reasonably quick service despite being told on arrival that they were understaffed. Well done! Will definitely come back again.

The food here is so good. This has to be the most pleasing informal pub dining I have had in years. The food is so well priced and the staff is absolutely lovely. 100% would recommend you to try if you're in the area, the creme brulee is stunning

We had dinner there, great location at the waterfront, we had a few dishes, the oysters were great, the pulled beef and sausage pizza was good, I found the others were average.

Idk why there are bad reviews on their food, all the dishes we ordered were great. We came here a year ago and was good back then, planning to visit again on the next holidays.

While the chilli mussels are delicious, value for money is not there as you'll be hungry again an hour or 2 after you've eaten. Stay away from the from the crab & marron special. It's a nightmare to eat (especially if you're on a date) & again you'll be hungry soon afterwards.

Huuuuuge place on the water next to the Faux Opera House aka Albany Entertainment Centre.

Me: LLB to drink was excellent. The King George Whiting grilled, chips and salad. Ginormous plate with right portion of fish, real chips and lovely garden salad.
Partner: Her favourite go to food Mussels in a spicy tomato broth!
No there long, just scoff and go. But very enjoyable as you can eat there all day.

Had the pizza specials on the weekday for $10. Really great for what you get, not to mention the amazing view and the gorgeous venue. Will stop by again if we go to Albany
Chris
Killer view and nice ambiance.
Oysters natural were warm and didn’t taste at all freshly shucked. The cucumber vinaigrette spoilt the taste as it was way to acidic.
Pork ribs were broiled, chewy and covered in what tasted like tinned apple sauce.
Service was fast and polite.

So to start off the table was very solid and wasn't unstable at all(+1 🌟).

The service was good, the lady that served me was nice and if it wasn't for a missing glass of wine it would have been perfect (+1 🌟)

I ordered the squid special and my girlfriend had the gnocchi both of which were tasty and filling, if not a bit small portioned for the $25 we paid for each and the gnocchi was a tad bland; only being served with some sundried tomato. (+1 🌟)

Overall a good venue with a few minor drawbacks that could easily be overlooked.

Would reccomend to others and would probably go again(maybe in daylight when the views can be best admired)

The kitchen is open all day which is fabulous! We had amazing chili mussels, and a calamari salad which came in around the $50 mark, plus two rounds of drinks. There was a great selection of great southern wines to chose from, and the meals showcased local seafood.
We were really impressed with our meals.
The atmosphere isn’t the best, it’s like a big barn so noise and temperature control is hard to get right. Friendly staff a bonus and an amazing view. Would highly recommend for group or casual dining.

We had driven from Perth to Albany and just needed a good, easy meal. Due South had a good rating on several sites. We arrived to find easy parking. The staff were all exceedingly friendly and helpful. We were excited that it really was all about promoting local produce. We were doubly excited that there was a Cellarbrations attached so we could take wine back to our hotel. We have been in WA for 5 days and this was easily the best restaurant experience and best value experience that we have had. The housemade charcuterie plate was delicious and had a great selection of meats. It also came with ample bread. The fish of the day came with a well cooked large piece of fish, lots of good chips and half the plate was a nicely dressed salad. I saw the steaks come out to other tables - if you need a steak have it here - huge! The staff in the bottle shop were also extremely helpful in advising on good wineries to visit in the region and some good bottles to drink now.

The funky shape of the building, the bold walls, and the gorgeous views provided for a wonderful photographic experience before we sat down to enjoy some snacks and live music. I loved the upbeat, classic rock vibe of the band while sipping on my cloudy cider (Ryan, on his soy mocha) as we waited for our food. There was a decent turnout for a Sunday night, but it was a holiday weekend. We ordered the chips, which were delicious, crispy and hand-cut, along with the chicken wings. We opted for the BBQ sauce for the wings and loved the flavour and how crispy the chicken was. True to stereotype, this midwest american born girl, loves corn… so I had to try the corn on the cob special; which was corn covered in a chipotle sour cream, parmesan and coriander (cilantro). The corn was an Aussie attempt at Mexican street corn, but it worked. I enjoyed the flavour, I just found the corn to be a bit overcooked. As the sun set down over the horizon, we had to agree that Due South was a great spot to spend our last night in Albany.

Incredible faultless meal obviously cooked by passionate skilled chefs! We shared the local caught squid with kimchi coleslaw for entree, squid was certainly fresh and tender, perfectly cooked. Lovely seasoning. Kimchi coleslaw was alright. Not exactly kimchi style. Was fresh wombok, carrot, kohlrabi, spring onion, mayo and sriracha sauce possibly? Was okay but not ground breaking. I had the dry aged 500g rib eye on the bone with potato pave, celariac remolade, jus & condiments. Perfectly cooked tender steak! I wouldn't say it's a 45 day dry aged steak as advertised (not enough funky dry aged taste for me makes me question the 45 day statement) all seasoned to perfection. Potato pave was delicious, celariac remolade perfect! Jus not over reduced was delicious! Mrs had the rump steak with house made chips and salad which she thoroughly enjoyed. Daughter had the cheese burger which was equally enjoyed but a little overpowering with the amount of mustard. (More of a personal preference) fantastic meal would not hesitate recommending or going back again. About time we found some quality food!

Such a lovely spot to dine. Food was really good, extensive drinks list and great venue. However the bar staff ruined our entire experience, one guy was so arrogant and rude and had no idea how to make drinks let alone what drink specials they were promoting that day! We asked for 2 x cocktail spritzer specials, (advertised on a sign right in front of us) and he had no idea what we were talking about and treated us like we were completely stupid for asking. To be honest all of the bar staff were arrogant and grumpy, a smile goes a long way, perhaps some customer service training is in order.

To be honest, I was disappointed.
When we ordered just after 7:30pm, it seemed like we might be told that the kitchen was closing, but it stayed open, and people ordered after us. Though it took longer than expected for food to come out.
The small/to share pizza bread came out after the mains, which we found a little odd, but it was really good and a decent size, so great value for money.
The pulled pork burger came with a napkin sitting underneath it, which I found a little odd at first, but when the burger started dripping a lot I understood its purpose. The amount of coleslaw and sauce made the burger seem almost lukewarm. I know it's a balancing act with different temperature foods put together, but the meat could have been warmer. It was quite messy. The chips were good, and there was a solid serving of them.
My partner reports the cheeseburger was okay. It was nice (just nothing special).
The views during the day would make a dining experience here more impressive, but on this night overall the experience was pretty average. A positive point is that the overall value for money was decent, especially compared to other places in the area.

Our favourite place in Albany to dine. Fantastic service and food. Views across the lake are amazing and worth seeing the sunset on the jetty outside. A must to tourists visiting albany especially for an early dinner to see the sunset, boats, amazing view of the city and views of the wind farm.

Such an amazing place. We went there twice on the same long weekend for dinner and considering that it was 3 of us, 6 different dishes and all were so good!!
The curry is out of this world, the pulled pork was super good, the pasta with mussels was amazing... the squid was very tasty... the prices are acceptable considering the great flavours and variety.
The service is good and food comes out quickly. This is despite the many tables busy and is such a large place!
One of the few places I have visited: good food, good service and good value!
Graeme Guy
So disappointed. Service incredibly bad, ruined the entire experience! So very rude!! Food was average at best but the beer was cold (reason for the 1 star and it was necessary to put some rating to be able to review)! Won't be back and won't be recommending.
- Albany locals

I'd read mixed reviews so didn't have high expectations but was pleasantly surprised by the decent food and really prompt and helpful service here. We had pizza, bangers and mash and a steak sandwich. The steak was a little tough, but the sandwich was good and chips were lovely. Pizza was tasty and bagels and mash portions were huge and delicious. This pub is huge but the wait staff were doing a great job on a busy sat night. Would definitely go again.

Food was tasty, but a bit of a stingy serve. For what we paid ($24 for bucatini pasta and $29 for calamari) we expected at least a little side serve of salad or chips? Thats my only complaint though is that the servings were underwhelming.
Foodrinkperth
Large venue definitely set up as a tavern not dissimilar feel to Little Creatures in Perth. Extensive menu for food and drinks - settled for a couple of share plates both substantial servings. The humous plate was a standout for this type of dish served as a salad with the chick peas on the base, edible flowers, mixed sprouts and deep fried chick peas! The charcuterie plate had a great mix of smoked local meats and pickles. Minor suggestion replace the plastic tub containing the pickles with a glass/ceramic bowl!
Chris
Giving this a high rating for a pub venue. Pleasantly surprised about this place as it was one of the few places we could get a table on Easter Saturday. The ambience of the place isn't particularly great as it is more like a food hall but the service and quality of the food was excellent, particularly given how busy they were. All of our dishes were cooked perfectly; quite unexpected for a venue of this type. Kudos to the staff.
Jane
Friendly and efficient service, food was ok but nothing special. Good looking menu and had promise but didn't quite delver. Very noisy and it wasn't even full.
Anthony
Food was excellent, service was mint. Ambience is amazing inside and out, staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Would come every week if we weren't from out of town!!!

Came for Sunday sesh, fantastic music. Food was late (fried gnocchi) but we were offered a free drink because of it. Impressed with food and service.
Carly
A great beer selection and beautiful spot, but unfortunately you seem to be paying for the view. Average - at most ok - food for above average prices.
Vicki Nutsford
Delicious food at a reasonable price, friendly service and a great view. This place has plenty going for it! We can't come to Albany without stopping in for a meal. Giving these guys a top rating!

Spacious, nice environment, nice view. $12 chili dog with cheese sauce on top. Grilled homemade sausage, really juicy. Cheese inside the sausage as well. Using real chili chutney, not fake chili paste. Good presentation of half the dozen of oyster. The foam below the oyster is made up of water and sea salt. It is really salty foam. However, the lemon stuck to the foam become really salty, so as the oysters.

There are plenty of fine eateries in Albany but one that has brought us back a few times is Due South right on the Albany Port. It’s an amazing building with perfect views overlooking the estuary.
Steph
The view is the main attraction. Food is edible but average. Fish and chips is literally -just- fish and chips. Nothing to write home about.

Very Disappointing. We visited the Due South restaurant mid week for dinner with friends. My mains of fish and chips was passable.

However, my partner’s mains of pork belly was so disappointing. The portion of food was inadequate, it was over-priced and certainly not worthy to be served as a mains. It was absolute rubbish and a frozen meal from Woolworths looks and tastes far better. What a waste of $32.

We will not be visiting Due South ever again and will not be recommending this establishment to any of our friends.

Great location, atmosphere but menu a long way to go. Went with a few friends and found the menu to be uninspiring (they attempting to be trendy but failing) - the burgers tasteless and not sure who goes out for bangers and mash.... and the kids did not like their meals......... but great atmosphere and great location and staff very friendly. Maybe for drinks but not the meals.......
Ivan Banks
Overall very disappointed - we had to queue to order then waited almost one hour for our meals which were "average" we both ordered very simple meals that needed little immediate preparation and it took forever for the meals to arrive - perhaps a ploy to get you to order more drinks
Renee Brookes
Burger and bangers and mash were very nice. Homemade chips were amazing. Although, ordering food was an ordeal - poorly trained staff didn't know how to use the tills - we couldn't get our beer of choice as she didn't know how to process it! Will go back - but I hope the service improves!

Great Vibe & Food. Went here with Family for lunch it is a vibrant modern pub in a Gr8 location on the water but the food was well above average the ribs were extremely tasty and the menu had enough variation for all 4 meals and everyone was grinning
Coastal
We booked a table for 10 here for lunch on 28/12. Service, food and beer all great. Ribs very tasty, though not a generous serve. King George whiting was outstanding.
Would go again and recommend.

Cold coffee after a long wait. One end of the building is quite noisey when crowded - the other end no so bad.

Better luck next time, MAYBE!!!!. Limited menu, noisy for the amount of people there. Order the fish and chips and Mussels. The fish batter was over coooked and dried out, the chips were soggy and the salad had 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 slices of cucumber and the rest was just lettuce. Mussels were nice but the home made bread was undercooked and doughy. The beer was the highlight of the meal. Hoping it improves and succeeds as location of the venue is fantastic and it supports local produce.

Great views, great food. We enjoyed lunch with friends at Due South today and were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful local King George Whiting and a friend had steak which was cooked exactly as ordered. Lovely open and large area for dining. All in all a great experience.

William McInnes evening. Sun very glarey, to the point where a friend had to wear her sunglasses inside. Patrons were not allowed to sit down until very close to 18:30 as the Tables were't ready, evening though the event was due to start at 18:30. Acoustics were terrible! Background noise, including Kitchen clutter and from Patrons from other side of the bar. Meal, fortunately, was delicious and Wait Staff were good. Need to organise acoustics, solar-panel Blinds, noise factor!

My husband and I thought we would try this lovely new restaurant that is in a fantastic location, and went for lunch, but did,nt find much on the menu that looked inviting, so husband decided on the burger and I on the chicken pate, my husband said the burger, although being large was tasteless , and did,nt like the cabbage with it, and also the chips were not nice and crispy, but very soft and he felt they had been reheated, my chicken pate was lovely , but I would not have picked it as it was $ 18.00 which I thought was a bit much, but there was nothing else on the menu for me, we hope the food changes for the better so we can go back to this lovely venue,

Loved it!. Gorgeous view, yummy food and lovely staff! This exactly what Albany needed
Twiga
A large casual restaurant in a great location with a disappointing and over priced menu.

Disappointed. The first time we went to Due South we enjoyed the food and the experience! The next time we went with family members we were totally disappointed!! We were handed a tatty piece of paper which was the menu??!! What happened to the PROPER menus we had the first time. Not only that the menu had shrunk!! What we did have was average, the chips not as nice as our previous experience. And what about a nice piece of cake??!! That doesn't seem to exist, just a few bits of not very nice looking tarts in the cabinet!!! We would love this restaurant to succeed, great location and nice building but the food needs to bring us back. I guess for us until Due South improves .........Dome it is!!!

Delighted. Fabulous ambience, great service from lovely attentive staff and delighted with the quality of food and the pricing..
Can't wait to return.
Sue
Ok experience but staff are not on the ball (wrong drink, no new cold water for table, table not cleared from previous people and lastly told no changeroom facilities so bub was changed on the floor - then told yes actually there is a changeroom!). Pizza was only warm and bland. Room for improvement, would try again.
Janenasso
Tasteless. The menu we were offered was limited.
The fish I chose was tasteless and the warm salad was cold.

New addition to the Albany dining scene. Due South is a large tavern down on the waterfront in front of the Entertainment Centre. The food is good, the drinks are cheap and the ambience is convivial. You're not going to get cutting edge cuisine, but you will get fresh, local and well cooked/prepared food.

And the chips are real!

This may become our favourite fall back place to go when we don't feel like cooking dinner (or lunch!).

Update:
I'm editing this review to add that we have been back a couple of times since my first review and have only been very disappointed. The menu offered was very small (I believe since expanded again?), with nothing really on there for a non-red meat eater. The fish was expensive for the serve one time, the salad was watery with no dressing on another visit and the chips were not freshly cooked and tasted old and reheated or at least old and kept in a bain marie. The noise is unbelievable and this place seems to have descended into the default place for MASSIVE tables of diners - one time we went there was a table of close to 40 people.

We won't be back until we know the proper menu is back and the food has improved.
