Review The Squid Shack - Albany

Jeff Kwok
Finally, we managed to eat here on boxing Day. Shark was awesome as reviewed and wife liked the blue grouper. Location is fantastic, right in front of Emu Point. Service is efficient. Fish was fried to perfection, crispy batter outside and fresh tender fish inside. Not a single morsel was left.

Fish is fresh, well cooked and chips are good too. This is one of the best fish and chips store in area. Customer have a choice of and door and outdoor dining area. Food came out reasonable fast. Pricing is good for what you get maybe more chips could be a bonus.

I voted this one as the best Fish and Chips in WA. The crispness and level of freshness is absolute perfect. My sons both agreed that this is the best yet fish and chips that they have tasted. We eat twice just to check if they are consistent with the taste. Serving was fast. We ordered catch of the day and the fishersman basket.

Best fish and chips ever. Batter was so thin and crunchy. Fish was so fresh. Just had lunch there. Will be back for tea tonight.

This place has one of the best squid and fish. We had the blue bone groper and the texture was just perfect!
Nancy Nguyen
Crispy golden flaky batter coated on succulent pieces of shark and groper. We also tried panko crumbed squid rings. Crunchy chips smothered in chicken salt by the seaside. Dog friendly place, outside benches. Lucky to be an Aussie #fishnchips

I come here every time I come to Albany and it never disappoints. Tried the shark 🦈 and for $15 with chips it’s such a great portion of foods. Fresh pre made salads available to purchase as long with homemade desserts and soft drinks. Beautiful location right by the jetty with Middleton beach just a stone throw away. Such a great place.

awesome place to have fish and chips and salt&pepper squid. i’m quite a picky person when it comes to eating fish & chips, but this place serve such a fresh and tasty meal that me and my family visited twice during our stay at here!!

Delicious food. We had fish and salt and pepper squid. Cooked to perfection. Bonus for me was the pickled onion. And it was so good to have vinegar to add to the chips. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Albany.

Awesome staff & great food! Definitely recommend to everyone!

I wouldn't go back, wasn't very nice. For something so close to the ocean you would think the fish would taste fresher. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Chris Chadwick
We had the fish & salt & pepper squid for two. Super fresh and bloody delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

We had lunch here and found one serving of the salt and pepper squid is enough for 2 people
Leanne Harrower
Great food and fantastic service. Seagulls were very talkative but loved being by the seaside.
Elizabeth Neczypir
Top spot for a feed of squid. Highly recommend. Views of oyster harbor.

Good value lovely fish, always a bit of a wait but it's in walking distance and the scenery is beautiful

The name says it all. Best shack to get squid from in the whole town. If you are in Albany, do stop by here for the tastiest salt and pepper squid in town. You won't regret it. We're definitely coming back here again to get more, and try other menu for sure.

Overall fresh seafood, well fried & not overly greasy. Unlike a lot of other chip shops, the chips weren't soggy & instead were nicely crisp with great flavour. I had the squid rings, which were light & fresh; they had the perfect amount of batter on also. My friends that had the fish were equally satisfied on the same grounds! nice stuff

On one hand I'm impressed by the incredibly light and crunchy batter on the fish, having the taste of beer batter but the lightness of tempura, but then on the other I'm incredibly let down by what were quite obviously frozen pre-cut chips and frozen pre-prepared salt & pepper squid. Given the choice of Flathead, Red Emporer, or Shark, I'm crossing all my fingers and all my toes hoping the fish were fresh.<br/><br/>No fresh lemon as per older photos shown here on Zomato, either, just a bottle of preservative-laden lemon juice... No thanks!<br/><br/>Even if the menu were priced accordingly (and the tables not so sticky), I'd still be disappointed by the use of frozen food, so it's a very definitive no from me.

Food was expensive for what it was. I was expecting nice fresh seafood being right on the pier but it was definitely all frozen and thrown into a fryer. Such a shame.
MmmFood
Although the food was quite delicious, I felt as though the portions were tiny for additional, it was all frozen foods and overpriced for what it was. One tiny fillet of fish, 4 prawns (which granted were king prawns so quite good size) and the calamari & chips was $33.50 for this.

We've eaten here a few times. The fish and chips are above average however portions are SUPER TINY. The last time we were there we spent about $170 for 4 adults and 4 kids. We had to order 3 times because we still weren't full. You really have to have deep wallets to eat here. Friendly and nice staff but can't seem to understand how they can charge $15 for fish and chips and leave customers hungry after.

Terrible. We had wanted to beat the dinner rush hour and arrived early 5:30pm. Prior to ordering we were told they were out of all fish options other than shark, and the wait would be ONE HOUR! How does a fish and chip place run out of fish right before dinner service?!. After informing the counter girl that we needed enough shark and chips to feed 6 people and paying for 6, we received a serving portion for maybe TWO with the stingiest serving of chips I have ever seen from ANY fish and chip place (the glaring look of disappointment from three teenage boys forced my hand into writing this review). The shark and squid tasted metallic like it was cooked in stale oil. Substandard food quality, unreasonably long wait and poor value for money made this our worst fish and chip experience EVER!.

We love this food. We had a great lunch of salt and pepper squid and chips and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh perfectly cooked seafood it was great value for money. We went back for dinner and brought our own wine just as enjoabled food and atmosphere. We thouroughly recommend the Squid Shack as a place to visit in Albany. We are road tripping across Australia and this is a magic find for food we love WA seafood. We were there on a Saturday and it was very popular .

Good food - terrible service. I like the fish and chips here and had been looking forward to revisiting. However, to be turned away at 7.03pm as they stop taking orders at 7.00pm was disappointing - especially given we were looking to order 18 meals for our group. Will not go back.

Good fish n Chips - stingy serving. As a previous visitor to this eatery I was looking forward to a nice feed of fish, chips & squid - how wrong I was.<br/>Upon paying $28 we received a half full cardboard box consisting of 4 measly pieces of red snapper (a fish I believe to be somewhat larger than a sand whiting) a small handful of salt & pepper squid and barely enough chips to feed a 5 year old! To say the lease we were VERY DISAPPOINTED. This used to be a great place to get a good meal of fish and chips. Don't get me wrong, the food was tasty, but there was hardly any of it. After politely bringing my disappointment to the attention of the manager it became quite apparent that they don't care. Very sad to see a good business going downhill through sheer greediness. As a final word of advice - LOOK at what is being served up BEFORE placing your order.

Everything seemed fine - until we tried the food!. After being recommended this place by family who live in Albany, we gave it a shot. What a huge mistake!!! We decided to get the $28 dollar fish/salt'n'pepper squid/chips basket and they failed in about every way they could. The squid was - as other reviewers have described - bits of frozen squid *cough bait* chopped into chunks and fried and re-fried in bland batter. The fish was tasteless (like it had been frozen for ages) and had a weird smell about it. The batter was again, tasteless and devoid of any spices. Finally the chips... how the f*@! do you screw up chips?!?! Well, Squidshack did and no amount of salt, vinegar, tartar sauce or chicken salt could save this meal from being a complete waste of money.<br/><br/>My advice - go elsewhere!!! DO NOT be sold by the apparent busyness of the place, the flashy menu or the number of staff. The food is truly terrible. This place seems to have fallen far, and hopefully in time it's reputation will also fall so people stop recommending this place to visitors!

Worst fish and chips ever!!!!!!!!. Just had to tell people not go here ! Beautiful location but terrible food awful batter on the fish and squid straight from a freezer which was inedible. And top it off it all smelt strange so we put the lot in the bin.Save your money !!!!!
Steve Reynolds
By far the worst fish and chips ever had! $5 serving of chips was disgaceful.<br/>And after explains to the lady behind the counter was for 4 adults and we wanted 4 pieces of fish. She said they just sell serves which had 3 pieces in it. And a kids serve for the difference. Was enough for 2 adults when we received it. I just hope the pretty foam boxes there served in make up the cost !<br/>Fish with tough and tastes like squid.!<br/>Never ever again
Soho1994
Terrible. Squid and chips and fish and chips bought<br/>wish we hadn't bothered the worst meal ever <br/>beyond salty and terrible chips a very strange smell from the meal <br/>Just don't waste your money I've had better oven fish and chips
Sarina Watson
Salt and pepper squid is dipped into sly n pepper coated in batter and deep fried. Not what we expected for the price. Chips are below par. Would think they'd have a nicer range of fresh seafood being so close to the wharf. Disappointed.

Great feed!!!. The people who wrote the negative reviews must have gone on a bad day (or else they're just very hard to please! lol). We're locals and treat ourselves to a Sunday night nosh up at the Squid Shack quite regularly. Never had a bad feed yet! They are always busy on weekends so it's best if you phone an order through in advance. Or do what we usually do .... get there about 4.45 and put an order in for 6pm, then go for a nice walk around Emu Point for an hour or so while you're waiting.

Terrible. I recently went to the Squid Shack at Emu point and was very disappointed. After waiting for 30 mins we received a serve of 'Red Emperor' however from the consistency, size and shape of fish fillet, it obviously wasn't Red Emperor and tasted terrible!! Even worse was the chips - absolutely disgusting!!! It tasted like they were slowly cooked in stale oil. This place really needs to lift their game! In such a beautiful place with fresh seafood on their doorstep you would expect a much higher standard! Don't waste your money.

Don't bother to find it. My husband and I on a recent holiday to Albany had this fish and chip outlet recommended to us. One local advised us that people travel miles to go to the Squid Shack, so we took ourselves off there one evening. Arriving at about 6.40 pm we waited in the line happily, though with no seating left we were joking about having to eat our fish n chips in the car (I am too old to be squatting on foreshore grass). When our turn to order we were told it would be at least an hours wait on our order. We left. Nice location, the portions we could see being bought out to families looked nice, but we wanted our meal and to be back in town by 8, not still waiting on a feed of fish then. Wouldn't bother with the trek out of town or if you do, go at 5pm and eat early. We had a lovely pizza at Jo Joes instead :D

Average. The menu was pretty basic for fish either Emporor or shark which is fine. The griled version of the Emporor was dry and hard as a rock. There were 3 of us with the grilled fish and 4 of us wih the battered shark and the salt n pepper squid...all ordinary I'm afraid to say. The best thing about it was the chips and the location.

Ho Hum. Basic quality battered frozen fish with below par chips and squid bites in a flavoured batter. Just doesn't cut it. A hangout for pensioners.

Great fish and chip shop. Had some delicious tempura battered squid with chips today, even wanted more (the table next to us went back for a second order of squid)! I read some bad reviews but decided to go anyway, after all one persons dining experience is their own dining experience. People, this is essentially a good fish and chip shop so if you have a hankering for fish/squid/chips then visit to the squid shack but leave your sav blanc at home!

Go Somewhere Else. The Squid Shack was (emphasise WAS) somewhere I always recommended as THE place to go for a meal in Albany. It isn't now.<br/><br/>My whole trip I'd been hanging out for a bucket of squid bits, fresh off the boats, cut into small, bite size pieces, whatever that coating was they used. Mmmmm__mmmm.<br/><br/>What I got was store bought squid rings in an insipid coating of grunge over a tray of ho-hum chips. The lad behind the counter told me that the rings would cost 50 each if all I wanted was a bucket of them. Alarm bells should have sounded, but I was still expecting the squid of old.<br/><br/>The dismissal of the staff with "Oh well, new owners..." was the nail that sealed the coffin shut (don't want to say 'straw' as it reminds me too much of what I ate).<br/><br/>So, new owners, shame on you. As any who visited here in the past will know, The Squid Shack was built on the quality of meals and the specialty of the squid rings, as well as the jovial, welcoming banter of the staff. And please, don't give me any glib responses like "Oh well, times change."<br/><br/>My recommendation to all and any now will be, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Alfred
Good to Try. Not the best fish & chips but on par.<br/>Near the waterfront and with view if you just sit outside.<br/>We brought in a bottle of Great Southern Riesling paired with the fish and squid. When I asked if BYO is permitted, the staff just point me to the shelves for the plastic wine glasses !<br/>Overall, a very good Fish (Squid) and Chips experience !

The only reason I like the the squid shack is because of the squid. The service is pretty poor with rude, surly teenagers who clearly don't know how to even smile at anyone!
Albany
Generous serves, good service. My reason for not liking comes down to the fact there's no option for having grilled fish. Everything's deep fried in a thick batter, some people love this, I think it's a shame because it ruins what would have been a tasty fish fillet by layering in greasy batter. The salt and pepper squid was really tasty, but, quite tough. This wouldn't be my first choice for F&C in Albany. But if you don't mind greasy deep fried stuff - try it out.
Mr3oh7
Very generous serve, could have done 3 adult or even a family with 2 small children

Fish and Chip Shop. The disappointment comes from thinking this was a café or restaurant rather than a fish and chip shop. With a name like the Squid Shack and being situated on the boat harbour I was also thinking that they would be serving fresh local seafood rather than frozen imported products. If you go there expecting a fish and chip shop you won't be disappointed.

Delicious squid. I love to come here and buy a big serve of garlic salt pepper squid. It's not fancy, but it's tasty.

Worth the drive. I had got the idea to find this relaxed fish and chip shop from the "top things to do" list from the Albany Information centre. I small drive from the Albany centre brings you to the store situated on Emu points marina. The squid was cooked to perfection, with a beautifully crunch exterior and tender interior. The fish was much the same with a flavour in the batter i can only describe as 'nacho cheese' derived. The chips didn't live up to the standards of the previous two menu items, but still were well received. The Squid shack is the best fish and squid I have ever had, not including proper sit down restaurants. <br/>Food 7.5/10 Service 6.5/10 Decor 5.5/10

If I lived anywhere near the Squid Shack, I could see myself as a regular – the local surfers and little old me, sitting in the shack enjoying freshly deep-fried seafood and chips by the sea.
