Review Kamel - Albert Park

Joanne Lung
Back to a much loved spot where the food is consistently awesome and the service is superb. The duck pastilla was fantastic, with tender pieces of duck confit, prunes and chickpeas in a thin, fluffy pastry melting in the mouth. The chicken tagine with cous cous and dates was so full of flavours and textures that complimented each other. We capped off the meal with refreshingly delicious halva ice cream and Turkish apple mint and lime tea. Romantic decor and mood lighting in each of their seating areas adds to the atmosphere. The service staff are super accommodating every time I've been here, where nothing is too much trouble. In response to their willingness to split bills even though we didn't ask for it, the owner said "Why not? We have the technology for it." A lot of places act like you want to pull their teeth out. Enjoyed introducing my friend to this place tonight and will be back again myself. If you're here in a group, the banquets are amazing.

Great food and so tasty, we don't eat this cuisine often and we should have it more, it's simply so satisfying! Went for the $40 banquet, heaps of food and every dish was yummy and good portion size, very full at the end and just enough room for the crispy sweet baklava. Service was lovely and good atmosphere.

Had dinner last Saturday with friends after booking online. We opted for the $40 banquet, the food was delicious and service very good. The restaurant is made up of smaller rooms which are decorated in a very individual, eclectic way and is easy to find after a short taxi ride from Southbank. We will return next time we're in town.

My wife loves middle eastern food, especially Moroccan food, so for her birthday I took her friends to Kamel. What a great choice. We had a banquet so nobody has to think about food at the table. Everyone had to eat, drink and chat. A perfect night was had by all. Thanks Kamel!
Dawn Morgan
We all had the banquet and everything was absolutely delicious. There was lots of variety, all courses very fresh and tasty. Adjustments were easily made to accommodate a vegetarian. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to eat here. It is great

$50 set menu is the perfect way to explore what this place has to offer. An enjoyable culinary adventure in a nicely laid out space with impeccable service. I would go back and order the same meal any time.

Delicious food - very flavourful. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Friendly staff. Best of all, they have a great gluten free selection and are knowledgeable about coeliac disease. We'll be eating and getting takeaway from here a lot.
Kim Roberts
Fantastic Middle Eastern cuisine in a relaxed setting. The staff are friendly and prompt, you won't have long to wait for your food (but it may take you some time to pick from the delicious menu - it all looks so good!), a good selection of wines and all topped off with being modestly priced. Something of a local institution, Kamel has been quietly putting out some seriously delicious food for many years - they offer delivery too if that's your thing. A quick note for those who have not experienced Middle Eastern cuisine - the service style is tapas, so order a few items and share them.

Kamel has to be hands down the best Middle Eastern food in Melbourne. Everything that we ordered was delicious and served quickly from polite staff who were dedicated and wanted to make sure that everything was right. I will definitely be going back again !!
Willtravelforfood17
We ordered a number of dishes that were perfect for sharing. Everything we had tasted delicious and was filling and the service was great too.

This place is okay. I'd say more a 3.5 than a 4 out of 5. My friend and I ordered the banquet, which is comprised of a fair amount of food for $40. It started with the Turkish bread, which I found quite underwhelming. It was okay. The hummus it was served with was very dry, though the beetroot dip was marginally better. The falafels weren't crunchy at all, they were quite mushy yet had a tough exterior at the same time. The tahini honey was way too sweet. The chicken shish kebab was nice and the meat was tender, but it was a little oversalted. The tagine and the sweet potato chips were absolute standouts - they could not be faulted. The dessert of baklava and Turkish delight (one of my personal favourites) was also excellent. Service was lovely and accommodating. <br/><br/>Overall, I think there's better food to be had elsewhere. Our experience here was quite lovely, but most of the food was underwhelming. There was also a really weird smell on the way to the bathrooms, which would best be sorted out!

One of my favourite local places for a casual bite to eat. <br/><br/>Service here is always friendly and welcoming and the food delicious. Love the mix of Middle Eastern and North African tastes. <br/><br/>The Turkish bread with dips always a great way to start and tonight the chicken shish and the asparagus and peach salad with goats cheese and pomegranate outstanding.
TheWhiteSherpa
The positive first: the food is excellent. Fantastic job, worth visiting. The negative: the service is provided by very gentle but inexperienced staff and everything seems a bit tentative. The decor is particular but some part of the restaurant would do with a clean up and a dust off. Great potential - can become a Melbourne favourite with little additional help.
ALM
Nice and cozy place with great food.<br/>Better to book in advance.<br/>The highlights of the evening were Pork and seafood stew with cous cous.<br/>Customer service was also great
The Broneills
As good as any restaurant in Melbourne - an absolute gem!!! Went for dinner Saturday night 14th July, staff were so lovely and it was packed, but had a great feel about it - and Locals coming in constantly to grab orders.<br/>The pork belly was the best in Melbourne - I urged the staff not the change the recipe, it can’t get better.<br/>The saganaki, lamb & lentil filo, sweet potato falafels were so good!<br/>Great job Kamel, I’ll be back for sure!
LaunnieFoodLover
We ordered the banquet $40 each but vegetarian. The dips & bread were amazing would have loved a couple of extra bits of bread. Saganaki well hard to get that wrong. Have to agree the food was definitely not as seasoned/ spicy as would possibly imagine. I have never been to this area of the world to assess authenticity but it suited me fine as I hate spicy food & could eat it all. We had sweet potato felafel, tabbouleh, eggplant with quinoa salad, zucchini fritters, baclava & turkish delight. Good value & a good meal. Enjoyed the decor too, & a cosy place. Wait staff probably could have been more friendly but hey maybe they had a bad day.

Sat outside on a balmy evening. It's a quiet road at night. Ate with three vegetarian friends. Ordered a range of share plates, each one came out better than the last. While the service was a little haphazard, the only real problem was that we over-ordered and couldn't finish everything, so no room for Jock's icecream afterwards. A very satisfying meal.

I am soo happy to have found this amazing restaurant <br/>Loved everything - warm elegant ambience, the staff were able to accommodate 2 extra people on short notice , food completely amazing ! They also catered for gluten free<br/>We all had the banquet<br/>This included :-<br/>Delicious bread with beetroot + a hummus dip - beetroot was so so good <br/>Chicken skewers were amazing , Lamb tagine- so full of flavour, tender .. there was also falafels and tabouli salad .. and desserts for $40!! <br/>Can’t wait to come back👏👏
Girl_Eats_World
Friendly service, extensive menu, cozy venue. My table of four shared about 8 dishes plus dessert. Decent serving sizes and such variety. Everything was delicious, can't fault a dish.
Vegetarian Food Lover
I came to Kamel with friends & was very pleased to see a large selection of vegetarian dishes on the menu. We shared the following vegetarian dishes: <br/>- warm Turkish bread, olive oil & dukkah<br/>- saganaki <br/>- grilled peppered watermelon, feta, dill & pomegranate molasses<br/>- sweet potato & sesame seed falafels with tahini honey <br/>- haloumi, kale, mint & caramelised onion filo parcels<br/>- grilled egg plant with yoghurt <br/>- tabbouleh<br/>- chocolate donuts <br/>- baklava (the smallest piece of baklava I’ve seen served at a restaurant but tasted delicious, not too sweet) <br/><br/>All dishes were tasty, made from fresh & good quality ingredients. Service was very polite & friendly.

Ate at Kamel for the first time and it was fantastic. We had the grilled goats cheese with fig jam, the falafels and the Lamb and lentil filo triangles. They were all faultless and absolutely delicious. The price was very modest for such high quality food. The staff and the owner were very friendly and added to the overall experience. Highly recommend and will definitely be going back.

Went here last week for the 4th time since discovering it 6 months ago. Each time great food, nice atmosphere. Fabulous attendance to speed oak dietary restrictions. Love the beef cheek dish!
Pjv
Overpriced and under flavoured. Our table of 7 ordered at 7:15, and 2 of us got our meals at 8:37 with no apology. The other 5 got their meals within a reasonable time. The service here is awful. I cannot recommend this terrible restaurant
Jpolinkos
Service with a smile!<br/>This cosy little place has been around for over 15 years.<br/>It oozes warmth and has a very homely feel. <br/>The service was genuine, friendly and we were always served with a smile.<br/>We are big lovers of Middle Eastern food and the quality delivered here was very good.<br/>Seared scallops were OK, prawn saganaki was very good. The rolled duck with fig was good, a little sweet for my liking, but good. <br/>I must say the crumbed goats cheese, fig and Turkish bread was terrific.<br/>Although nothing we had blew our mind, the food was honest and very good.<br/>I think the service and pride in delivering a good experience is what really makes the difference here....well done!
Morganharu
Great food and atmosphere. Did a superb job of managing our group that got larger at the last minute. Loved the duck roll and the banquet dishes were fantastic. Some of us just back from the Middle East felt like we'd been transported back there.

Back at kamel over the weekend - Love this place - have been visiting for years every time I'm in Melbourne, cosy, lovely staff and the food is absolutely to die for! Particularly love the crumbed goats cheese and the seafood khoresh - yum! So much food & so so good!
Lindsay
So disappointing.<br/>Tiny portions, unfriendly staff, mediocre service!<br/>Do not order the banquet as it costs just as much as ordering those exact items off the menu (for 3 people), but the portions are half the size. A bit bizarre if you ask me, and definitely not suited for dinner. <br/>
FoodieAboutTown
What better an idea on a warm night in Albert park but to grab a table outside at Kamel and get an ice cold Riesling and some pretty amazing food. Kamel has been around for a long time and they have remained consistently good serving African food that just wamrs the soul and makes the world a better place.
Milla Vanilla
Booked in Sat night and was pleased with Banquet #1! Started with dips then falafels, saganaki, quinoa salad, chicken skewers, green beans, tagine with cous cous and finished with turkish delight and baklava. Assumed Middle Eastern food used more spices, so hope they didn't tone it down for the Western palate. Still flavoursome nonetheless and everything was good if not great! Service was friendly and highly rate the baklava :)
AUFoodHeaven
If you like middle Eastern food, then this is the place for you, quaint old building, heaps of ambience, great food and very attentive service, if you are feeling really adventurous, make sure you leave room for dessert, especially the share platter.

Valentines day dinner.<br/>Thought about getting Japanese or maybe italian...<br/>and then I remembered this little gem called Kamel. <br/>Headed up to Albert park with my misses to try out kamel which I've had on my "to eat list" for a while now. <br/>We were greeted by the gentleman at the bar, who sat us down in the back area in the corner on the couches, really comfortable and warm seating arrangement which was perfect.<br/>We started with a couple drinks and then ordered some red capsicum with beef and fetta, after trying that I knew I was going to like this place. <br/>Girlfriend ordered the pork belly with cabbage and I ordered the honey duck with lentils. Best pork belly I've ever tasted, it was so crunchy and tasted like utopia. The honey duck was also amazing, especially the lentils which had a sweet tangy taste. The service was on point, food was on point, prices were extremely generous and kamel made us feel at home. The only negative I could find was that I didn't think the music being played in the background complemented what kamels food represents. Don't think having music that you'd hear on triple M was really suitable. Would of been absolutely spot on if they had some music which represented the "African & Middle Eastern" inspired food and culture. <br/>I am still giving kamel a 5 star because I am set on returning to eventually go through their whole menu.<br/><br/>Keep it up Kamel, will recommend your restaurant to family and friends!<br/>
Clare
Really love it here! Such a great vibe. Love the interior and the food is amazing. So many different flavours and combo's but all great. An awesome middle-eastern spot that I will definitely come back to. The staff are fab too!
SouthSideBrunch
Had a function here last night for 21 people and we had the banquey menu. The staff were simply superb in looking after us, the food exceptional and great value and all dietary requirements flawlessly catered for. Had big dinners here a few times and highly recommend.

Kamel, you really live up to the ratings on Zomato!<br/>This is the first time I've had Moroccan, African/Middle-Eastern cuisine and it was definitely worth the trip, thanks to RazTaleb for recommending here to be our recent meet up dining place. Came here for dinner last night.<br/>Luckily got a parking spot almost in front, walked down the path and I was like, eh, this is the place? Looks a bit nice! With the large, wide windows open and the door open, it looked great.<br/>I was waiting at the entrance and was told by a waitress to ask for a seating at the bar/cashier area. I was told with a strong accent that there's seating available outside for two, so I went there and to my surprise... where were the chairs? I stood there looking around at the staff as they were busy serving customers. I went back to the bar area and asked about the chairs, they said they'd get chairs from the back, so I waited - but there were none left. So I was left to sit at the narrow bar table on a stool to wait for my friend to arrive. A waitress told me I can move once a table was free.<br/>It felt chilly where I sat as the wind was blowing in towards my direction, sitting outside would've been nice with the heaters. At least I had time to browse the menu, I liked how it's a very intimate, with a list of 'Mezze' dishes... dishes to share. Since I'm a noob to African/Middle-Eastern/Moroccon cuisine I was curious as to what all those foreign words meant hahaha! Luckily when my friend arrived she could explain to me about some of the foreign words. Whew. Before and even after my friend arrived, the floor staff were very attentive and kept asking if I'd like any drinks or to order. When my friend did arrive, straight away a waiter came by and asked for our order. RazTaleb wanted to get the duck pastillas and I ordered the lamb koftas. To RazTaleb 's excellent luck, they ran out of duck.

The staff are very friendly here. We ordered the vegetarian banquet which was great, and plenty of food. The middle room with the fireplace was lovely. Only downside with the food is that it contains a lot of dairy. Otherwise excellent. We'll be back :)

小店,温馨,价格便宜,味道高于价格N个档次,每道菜都温柔的来有惊喜,可以让人爱上中东菜。<br/>It's the one made me fell in love with middle eastern food. Great quality to price. Nice people nice atmosphere.  Highly recommend grilled watermelon and seafood khoresh.
Missliseylou
We are regulars here. The staff are lovely. Wine list is great. Favorites are crumbed goats cheese, scallops, chicken shasliks, tagine of the day is always delish. Lunch there are amazing chicken and lamb kebabs. Everything is made fresh on site.
Devil In The Detail
Pretty nice experience at Kamel. Situated in the lovely part of Albert Park. Customer service was fantastic, and food was delicious. Only downside is the food came out a little slower than normal and i was particularly hungry. Not many options for vegetarian today as the menu changes every day - which makes it a little more awesome.<br/><br/>Highly recommended.<br/><br/>I had the beef tagine and apple mint tea (which was wow)
Coffeeaddict
The food here is amazing. The drinks were nice and they seated our group of ten girls in a semi private room who was perfect. The service wasn't the greatest not that they were rude but a little slow and a bit forgetful but all in all a really good place to go for a banquet with friends.

Went here on a Saturday with my partner and a friend from the Netherlands who can to visit. I wanted to show off what Melbourne has too offer in terms of great food, and I couldn't have made a better choice. It is a small, cozy and friendly restaurant with a lot of atmosphere.<br/>We started with drinks, and I had the gluhwein and that was delicious and so warming on a cold day like that day. <br/>We shared four dished and shared the brea with humus and beetroot. Both dips were nice and the bread was super tasty. But then the dishes came. First the prawns in a tomatoey sauce: delicious!! The sauce was great and I even spooned the pan empty. Next we had lamb cutlets with a very smokey dip. The dips may have been a bit too smokey, but the cutlets were great. Next dish was the tahini lamb with couscous and that was a nice larger dish. Good that we got some carbs because that was a little bit lacking before as is often the case with tapas. But meat was so tender it fell apart and couscous was perfectly seasoned with raisins, nuts and spice. The final dish was the beef with red wine and I think this was my partner his favourite because beef was incredible tender and parsnip purred was very smooth (we are trying to replicate this at home). <br/>Even though this was enough for us three we had deserts. We shared the rhubarb crumble and a sorbet. I'm not a big fan of sugary stuff so this wasn't the highlight of the dinner, but after those four dishes I was still completely satisfied :). <br/>Yes I recommend this to everyone who loves whole hearty meals and a nice cozy night out.
Kat_Eats_Mel
Very intimate restaurant with dim lights and welcoming feel. Service is good, staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. Food is very delicious. Great for a date night or catching up with friends. Will come back again and again. Thumbs up
Coffee Maverick
The first mistake this place made was not starting wth a c. Camels evoke strong memories for the Coffeemaverick, like the time I drank ones pee. The food is very good here and the service very nice. The saganaki was very good, I liked the sesame falafel however it misled me with the word sesame as I thought big bird would deliver it. He did not. I'm still scarred. Didn't poop here, I imagine it would have a nice pooper. Overall a good experience.
Smith Adele
Always busy, fresh food, good service. The place is quite small though but it feels like there is a unique vibe in this restaurant. You need to book it in advance if you want to have chance to dinner. I highly recommend this place.

Great food and great cocktails in a cosy, casual place with relaxing atmosphere and nice service. Can't really ask for too much more than that. I had been meaning to try Kamel for a long time now so I'm happy that I've finally been there because I'll definitely be back 👍<br/>PS. You need to try the Ali Baba 😉

Late Review<br/>Have been to kamel a few times with friends . Kamel gives you a little taste of middle east and leaves you with a desire to experience more. Amazing food and good service. There is so much food if you go with the banquet and all banquets have a lot of vegetarian options in them. <br/>Will definitely be back when I visit Melbourne.

Went with friends for dinner the food and service were fantastic.<br/>The menu selection was wonderful.<br/>Highly recommend and will definitely go back again and again.

Have visited twice recently and both times enjoyed the food.  There is a set menu available between 5 and 7pm which is perfect for eating out with young kids.  The dessert tasting plate on the main menu is incredible!

Went with a group of 9. We had great time there , staffs are really Friendly. Amazing Moroccan dishes . It was my first time to try Moroccan food , delicious dip& pita bread.

The location is ideal for a relaxing weekend lunch or dinner with friends. In summer, the rear courtyard is a nice spot to sit back and enjoy some mezze. I still don't consider this place a true Middle Eastern eatery as the menu has a North African flavour to it. My only concern is that the staff and cooks aren't Middle Eastern at all but the food is quite nice. Gets a little pricey if you want to order sharing plates.
Melly Mac
One of my faves and never disappoints! Have been coming here for a number of years and love the atmosphere and food. I recommend the lamb koftas - delicious!

I was so experiencing to experience the exotic favours of african & middle eastern cuisine and Kamel did not disappoint! We had the banquet and loved the range, quality & amount of food provided. A hidden gem in Albert Park. Recommended!

Food: For a table of 4 people, we ordered banquet #2 @ $47pp. A good way if you would like to try abit of everything. The first entree was goats cheese, quince, rocket w turkish bread (photo missing because I was busy enjoying this dish). The combination was amazing. Every dish followed was delicious. We were full and satisfied. <br/><br/>*Service: The waiter was very attentive 👍. <br/>I would definitely recommend this place.

Really enjoyed the overall experience. We were seated in the front section on a nice private table our water was kept topped up and our waitress was very attentive. Our drinks arrived promptly and our food came out with good timing between dishes. The food was really yummy and they catered well for my dietary requirements (veggie/gf). We had the 1st banquet which suited both our needs and appetites as my boyfriend can be quite fussy. Overall it was lovely. Neither of us left feeling hungry as there was plenty of food in the banquet.
Lanaa
Had a great time , out in the back . The food is really good but the Banquettes are not worth the value what soever!!!!! We all left pretty hungry and for that value we could have each had two main courses.

Bday romantic dinner. What a wonderful night! Thanks for a delicious meal and an atmospheric occassion. The highlight meal was the beef cheeks for both of us and it was one of the best meals we've had in awhile. This judgement has substance given we love to eat out as often as possible. We'll be back soon and will recommend this venue to our friends.

Divine food and fantastic service. Had a really lovely evening at Kamel last night. A group of 11 of us went on a create your own banquet - they have some new additions on their menu for winter which I was really excited to try and they were delicious ! The ox cheek was to die for and the vine wrapped prawns were incredible! There was plenty of food for everyone and the staff were extremely lovely and attentive. The atmosphere at kamel is always very warm and intimate , so it was the perfect place to enjoy an evening with friends. I've eaten here a couple of times before, but for the rest of the group it was their first time, they all loved it and said they would definitely go back.

Morocco meets Albert Park. Amazing food matched with superior customer service.
Kit And Kafoodle
Tucked off the hippest street in Albert Park, Kamel is a moroccan inspired eatery which welcomes you warmly into its arms. The decor is quaint, and the setting, cosy and intimate. Their menu is jam-packed with middle eastern stars that scream out at you, and I find myself getting lost for choice. salmon tartare  / sumac / cucumber and white anchovies / smoked tomato puree / capers We start with the duo of seafood on chia & quinoa crisps ($16.0) which is a beautifully presented dish, but unfortunately the taste was lacking. The salmon didn't taste overly fresh, and a lot of the flavour was lost on the crisps which were dry and very hard. With anchovy as one of the main flavours, that's saying a lot. The seared Scallops, caramelised onion puree & crispy proscuitto ($12.0) were next which was quite nice. Again, the seafood doesn't pop with sweetness as it's not fresh as fresh can be, but the ingredients in this dish are tried and true, and worked well together to create a satisfying taste.  I did not expect the seafood claypot - saffron rice with prawns, calamari, fish & mussels ($25.0) to be my favourite dish of the night. It is very simple, risotto style rice infused with the flavours of seafood which aren't chewy or tasteless. It had a hint of sweetness, just to bring out the flavour of the mussels and it worked a treat. I personally cannot go past a good Roasted pork belly with fennel, apple & toasted walnuts ($26.0), and though these pieces were small, it really filled you up. The salad was light and refreshing, and the pork belly decadent. Just enough fat and crackling to make you feel deliciously naughty. TL;DR A nice restaurant, close enough to walk to Jock's down the road

Breakfast or Lunch. I have come here for both breakfast and lunch and both were marvellous. Small venue but you generally don't have to wait.

Probably one of the favourites of the nights, the twice cooked rolled duck stuffed with figs, buckwheat & ginger was ducking good. The sweet figs made the perfect addition to the succulent bitefuls of duck.

I love Kamel, the staff are helpful, the menu is always imaginative and tasty. They serve Breakfast Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays ... Otherwise it’s lunch and dinner – which are also fabulous.
Brunch Addict
Brunch at Kamel seemed to be a bit of a hit or miss. The coffee was ordinary but the vanilla milkshake was amazing.
Vi
The chicken skewers didn’t catch my attention, although I did enjoy the persian pilaf.
Cat
To sum it all up, if brekky is this good, I’d really like to come back and try the dinner options out. And that opening remark about being able to recreate these flavours in the home kitchen? I’m not sure, Kamel. You’ve done this pretty well.
Kedama
Everything was yummy and hard to decide which one was my favorite but I think I liked their patatas bravas the best(top right in the pictures). That was fried potatoes and roasted onions with aioli. Runner up was the “honey & fennel pork belly, apple & walnut salad”(bottom right) i guess. The pork was perfect, most and skin was crispy!
Fatboo
there weren't many dishes that really made us go 'wow'
Eat And Be Merry Crew
For our first weekend breakfast after my being overseas for nearly four weeks Snooze and I headed off to Kamel, a popular café with a middle-eastern slant located on Victoria Ave, Albert Park. One of the things that struck me when thinking about what to say about Kamel is that with the sheer number of excellent cafes around Melbourne it's possible to become a little blasé or jaded. For example, Albert Park is not one of the suburbs I generally hear people mention when talking about where the best cafes can be found in Melbourne. However, put Albert Park just about anywhere else in Australia and I could imagine it becoming a foodie hangout more than somewhere mainly for locals. With Kamel, Albert Park Deli, Laurent, Browns and the new Hausfrau all within 5 minutes walk of each other, plus Andrew's Hamburgers, Lord Cardigan and other places that looked good but that I didn't note the name of or have forgotten, the fact that it's not considered a prime spot just shows how spoiled we

I love Kamel. I've been coming to this restaurant for years and it never fails to impress. Kamel is all about the food. The space is pretty small and simple, the staff is efficient and knowledgeable, but not remarkably nice.
Glutenshmooten
They have a pretty big dedicated gluten free menu with lots of variety, with the exception of dessert – not much choice for gluten free dessert. We shared about 8 dishes between 4 people and it was more than enough food – beautiful flavours – like pork belly and patatas bravas pictured below.
Adrian
What keeps Kamel interesting is that on one side you have Middle Eastern inspired gems like hummus, juicy kebabs and baba ghanoush and then you are hit with tantalising North African inspired spices from cumin, paprika to cinnamon and saffron all blended into a diverse menu sure to please any discerning diner. There is also the heavy use of fresh parsley and coriander breathing in some freshness. This would have to be my fourth time dining at Kamel, so a post was long overdue my friends. OVERDUE! A hunt for something different prompted the first visit two years back. Now, we find ourselves coming back for the consistently solid mezze selections from their dreamy pistachio crumbed goats cheese to the Turkish Fairly Floss that somehow dwarfs us into little kids as we make mustaches out of it! The menu is designed for sharing and the flavours aren't overly intense as you may think they are. More recently

Wow !. We went on a Monday night, and had the banquet for two ... amazing food, great atmosphere and great service ! <br/><br/>Can't wait to go back with 4 people so we can try the banquet for 4 !

Great food and atmosphere. The banquet was divine and portions are great. Best baklava I ever had. Will def go back again.

Very impressed!. My partner and I enjoyed an incredible banquet at Kamel this evening. The banquet was affordable at $39pp and left us feeling satisfied. Staff are lovely and extremely attentive. The atmosphere is warm and intimate - perfect for a first date or a group dinner with friends. THUMBS UP - we will be back. Thank you for a lovely experience!

Very poor. We recently visited Kamel with a party of 7. The service from the outset was abrupt and became increasingly rude as the night progressed. We decided to select a cross section from the menu and the food was lacking in taste. Given the quality of food in restaurants across Melbourne there would be no reason to return to this establishment.
Mjf1
Vegetarian banquet - hardly a feast!. We ordered a vegetarian banquet for 5 people. Food was tasty but the dishes came out spaced well apart and the servings could only be described as miniscule - the antithesis of a banquet! Dessert plate - to be shared by 5 people - was 3 small pieces of turkish delight, 4 very small (teaspoon size) pieces of baklava, and 2 very tiny scoops of icecream topped with some fairy floss - hardly enough for each person to taste and awkward to share - not a good end to the meal. Given that the cost of these ingredients would not have been very high, especially when compared to meat-based dishes, why so mean? We went home hungry! Will not be returning.
JC
First time here and I will be back. Service was spot on, food was delicious... And there were plenty of gluten free options, which we require. Easy and affordable local and I have already told several other people in the bayside area to give it a try.
Duncan
Worst meal in Melbourne. This was the worst meal I have had to endure for a very long time in Melbourne.<br/><br/>Service was appalling with drinks only being replenished by asking. Ridiculous. Wait staff were too busy having a chat at the counter.<br/><br/>The duck pastilla was so dry and tasteless I am sure it was from weeks ago and the zucchini, corn, feta & chickpea flour fritters with green tahini can only be described as revolting. The fritters were so doughy they were barely edible. I thought the green tahini would at least mask the lack of flavour however it just made it worse. Perhaps the tahini was green because it was off???<br/>We then had the seafood hotpot which was so overcooked it had just become mush. Pure stodge. The tiny pieces of salmon stunk. A first year apprentice would have been embarrassed by the effort last night, well if they had any pride in what they did the would. <br/>I have eaten here several times and has generally been a pleasant experience. It really was a disgrace.<br/><br/>Never to return.
Shikaotokoaoniyoshi
Unpleasant Experience. We arrived as a group of ten people and ordered a banquet to avoid sharing the dishes around. <br/>The staff kind of forced us to order the same banquet course to make their job easier.<br/>The most disappointing thing was that we still had to share the dishes ranging from starter to the desserts.<br/>As opposed to other peoples reviews I found the food to be substandard. <br/>The quantity of food was small and I did not feel full after paying $55.<br/>On top of that the room was very stuffy and hot, I did not feel comfortable eating my dinner.<br/>Overall I found the Kamel to be very average, contrary to the other reviews I had read.
Jo
Excellent service, good breake, ok coffee.

Consistently excellent food, but consistently uncomfortable room temperature. The food here is excellent, flavours are just wonderful and will always be a customer. <br/><br/>But the front of house staff just have little idea how to make dining a comfortable experience when it comes to room temperature. My experience has been that it's regularly too warm and when you ask staff to cool the room, they pop the AC on low, ultimately making it far too cold. Pedantic perhaps, but most people are able to get this simple thing right. Why not try to have a consistently pleasant dining temperature? Hope they can work on this one...

A little piece of delight. Utterly fantastic. a great little place with great food. well balanced menu and well packed flavoure staffed with knowledgeable people who loves what they do. The only thing that can be better than this is they were not always so fully booked! :D

Great food, excellent service, well priced!. I couldn't fault anything from our dining experience last night. Our first time there, and I can guarantee you it won't be our last! We ordered banquet 4 for 2 pax, at $39pp you get to try a great selection of dishes ranging from their bread and dips, saganaki, sweet potato & sesame seed falafels, chicken kebabs, lamb cutlets, tabouleh, field mushroom with feta, AND turkish delight doughnuts with vanilla ice cream! We were stuffed, in a good way obviously. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgable and friendly. A perfect combination for an excellent customer service! The mulled wine was a perfect company for our banquet experience on a chilly winter night ;) Can't wait to give their breakfast menu a taste. Till we meet again Kamel!

Had the saganaki, cheese filo triangles, meat platter, tzatsiki & dessert platter. Amazing food & great service! I'll definitely be back for more :)
Dissapointed
Did not meet expectations. We had one of the banquets and found most of the food lacked seasoning or real flavour. It would help if the chefs and cooks tasted the food before serving. The dips and lamb cutlets were very bland and the tabouli was bitter with the grapefruit. However, the saganaki, mushrooms and chocolate mousse were tasty as was the mulled wine. It was clearly too much trouble for the waitress to meet us at door or inform us about the menu which she did for our neighbors. It is a poor attempt at middle eastern cuisine. We Will be heading back to our fav Rumi for real middle eastern.

Lovely lovely lovely. My partner bought me in here for my birthday last week and it was lovely. The service was friendly and helpful and our favourite dishes were the salmon skewers and the kangaroo special. <br/>We also had the sweet potato felafel and whilst they weren't really the texture of traditional felafel they were still tasty. I also really enjoyed the chocolate mousse desert, the rosewater in there is a nice touch. <br/><br/>We hadn't been to Kamel for a few years but we're going to come back more often even though it's on the other side of town from us because it's delicious and has a lovely atmosphere.

Cozy little gem. Saganaki, grilled peppered watermelon, confit duck and pork belly with orange & fennel salad are among my favourite dishes so far. I will be returning to try more of the unique menu Kamel have on offer. Also, a very cozy atmosphere, being in a converted terrace house with multiple dining areas.

Lovely little restaurant with honest and well priced food. The scallops were delicious and the warm watermelon salad was something different. First taste of real Turkish delight and was much nicer than expected. Service a tad slow and staff sometimes a little distracted but overall, good neighborhood gem.

Kamel has lost it !!!. This place used to be a gem years ago but sadly has lost it !!<br/>Food has totally lost its authentic and complex flavours and is very disappointing, bland and over salted !! <br/>Obviously the talented chef has long gone ...<br/>Will not be returning.

First time visitors to this restaurant & there's a good chance we'll be back many more times. 4 of us had the vego banquet and we loved it. We also ordered a cpl of meat dishes on the side for the carnivors in our group & they gave those the thumbs up also. Service was friendly without being intrusive. This place deserves all the glowing reviews.

Best food and value restaurant in Melbourne (big call). It's an oldie but a goodie. We love it.

Enjoyed our lunch at Kamel. Some novel items like grilled watermelon with feta were delicious and so were the chicken skewers and cocktails. Service was friendly too. The plates add up and it isn't the cheapest eats but happy to recommend.

One of the best middle eastern restaurants I have tried in Melbourne! Every meal we had was yummy and while I don't usually have a soft spot for middle eastern desserts the fairy floss was a nice touch to the end of the meal. As much as we did like the place a couple friends felt a bit queasy after the meal which may have something to do with the richness of the meals. I would still visit again though!

In a city renowned for having amazing food, Kamel has to be right at the very top of my favourite dinner spots. The staff are very welcoming and easy going. The food is consistently at the highest standard, with beautiful combinations of flavours. Highly recommended!

Absolutely amazing food and service. The dishes we ordered have different and unique flavors, its nice that everyone shares the dishes around. Would definitely go back.

Great food just not enough for large party. I love this restaurant and went here for my husbands birthday 1 year ago and the experience was wonderful, great food so i thought to have his big surprise birthday there.<br/><br/>The service was great and the food was delicious, but unfortunately there just was not enough and people were still hungry afterwards, if they perhaps made sharing plates calculated a sharing plate per 3 people or 2 people and put like 2 of each main thing per person it would have been a lot more filling, the table looked empty and people wanted more:(<br/><br/>Overall the atmosphere was fabulous, the place was clean, the food was awesome and the staff were fantastic too, definitely would go back:D

Happy Customer. This restaurant is one that you may drive past and say "oh yeah that looks alright, I should go one day". Well we actually did stay true to our word and headed in for a friends birthday. We were seated upstairs of this converted old terrace house, in a cosy room thanks to the gas heater. There were eight in our group and and the waiters took their time in taking drink orders. <br/>We then perused the menu, which was quite a task given the range of dishes and option available. We all shared some Turkish Bread with dips (beetroot and hummus) to start. The dip to bread ratio was not the greatest, we needed about double the amount of dips, a common theme amongst many restaurants. <br/>Our hardest decision was whether we would share plates or order individually. We chose to order between couples and our selections were the Moroccon Chicken Skewers, Roasted Pumpkin and Beetroot Salad with goats cheese and pistachios, Sweet Potato and Sesame Seed Falafels with Tahini Honey, <br/>All of these dishes we were pretty tasty and we were left very satisfied. The tahini honey was amazing and went well on the chicken skewers too. The goats cheese and pistachios also provided a super addition to the warm salad. You get four decent sized chicken skewers per serve and that was easily enough to share.<br/>The waiters cleared the table and soon came a selection of desserts with sparklers to celebrate the birthday. We had baklava, Turkish delight, Turkish delight ice cream, halva ice cream and their famous Turkish Fairy Floss. All the sweets did the trick with the fairy floss being a talking point. It's texture was weird but it was addictive.<br/>Overall I would say this place is a great venue for a feed. The food all looked and tasted great and, the service was reasonable.<br/>We all had an enjoyable night.

Yum! You must try the goats fetA crumbed and deep fried comes with amazing Turkish garlic bread too! <br/>Pork belly great choice too, little pricey but worth it.

Desperately seeking spice. After saturation Spice viewing on SBS last night had an overwhelming hankering for a change of cuisine. Really fresh, menu selection wide & variable for the vegaquarian, generous portions for sharing if you're not territorial about your food. Let down was the salmon kebab special with 'salad' (see also 'garnish' ) of rocket & orange slices. WAY overpriced @ $20.<br/>Nonetheless a fulfilling meal & definitely will be back to work our way through some more of the menu
