I love this place! Family of 12 went there this morning for breakfast. The staff were so lovely, friendly and great service. The food was amazing. Thankyou! Everyone enjoyed their meal. Mine was so delicious.
We will be back!
We have been regulars at Fred's since they opened..
The food is consistently amazing, and coffees are the best in adelaide hills!!
The staff go out of their way to a accommodate your every dining whim!
The owners are warm and charming hosts!
Give it a try..... you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
P.s. Forgot to say, the sweets are to die for too!
See you here
Oh my goodness - I'm mid meal enjoying the most divine Tuna I've ever tasted! Not only the best breaky I've had but also the best Friday night dinners...thank you!! 🙌🏻
Great food, great service, friendly staff, nice atmosphere would thoroughly recommend. Only downer , glass of wine a bit xxxxy , decided against and had a local cider instead, delicious...
Fabulous food and great staff! It is a wonderful place to go in the Adelaide Hills and a short drive from the city.
Absolutely the best food anywhere. The staff and owners were wonderful. Thoroughly recommend this gem of a restaurant. Please come and set up in tassie 😀 PS the sweet treats we're out of this world x
Amazing food and service - amongst the best in SA and a great vantage spot to watch the Tour down under!!
The best food, the best coffee... the best service! Fred's is a massive win for Aldgate and the hills well done guys x
Food was nice, service was friendly and overall a nice relaxing place to dine...
My only suggestion would be to serve bacon and egg breakfasts on a plate not a bowl...
We visited Fred and it certainly lived up to its highly regarded reputation for fine food and service. The twice cooked duck leg curry was first class and the coffee enhanced a great lunch.
Really friendly, bubbly service from the staff, and delicious food. Really awesome little place too! Will definitely be back!
I’m so lucky to have Fred’s as my local cafe. A menu full of variety and flavour and friendly, welcoming staff. I travel a lot and can confidently say that they make the BEST coconut milk lattes.
Yesterday was our 2ND time having lunch at Fred's, as we celebrated our 22nd Wedding Anniversary. Both times it has been nothing short of AMAZING! Staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is simply stunning! The coffee is the best in Adelaide in my opinion! Gr8 job guys! ...
We ordered mushrooms and goat cheese with pesto on toast, and the the Bowl of Happiness. Very generous serves, I don't usually like #porkbelly but it was delicious! Best #VietnameseIcedCoffee with lots of condensed milk. SA Life magazines to read, relaxed, great service. Must visit for tourists and locals.
Great local cafe for coffee and weekend breakfast! Great menu! Delicious coffee!
I don't get up to the hills very often but an opportunity presented and we stopped in for a late Saturday lunch. Our picks were the Rueben sandwich and the bowl of happiness. The Rueben was chock full of smoky beef goodness and homemade sauerkraut and the bowl of happiness was full of porky kimchi goodness. A glass of red wine finished it off nicely. Fred's is a really comfortable eatery with great staff.
Love everything about this little gem. Am making it my new go to. Great food, great drinks, amazing desserts, friendly service, awesome staff. Has some interesting food combinations that really work.
Fred's Eatery, Aldgate a country treasure, what a find!
Went for lunch on Sunday with the family.
We struggled to get a table, that says it all. Even though they were pumping the service was friendly and efficient & it was spotlessly clean. We didn't have to wait long after ordering for our food to arrive. We had the salt & pepper squidly diddly, sticky black chicken & egg & bacon rocket roll. The squid was perfectly cooked & the sticky black chicken was lip smackingly good.
The only negative was that they don't have skimmed milk for coffee, however the have a wide range of milk alternatives.
Only 20mins drive up the hills from Adelaide. If looking for a ride out of Adelaide well worth a visit then stop off at Stirling for a look around.
We will be back. THANKS for a great lunch.
Worth the beautiful drive! Extremely dog friendly with pooch parking and organic treats. Will definitely hit them again next time we’re in the hills. Half point off as coffees were cold
Delicious. Had the big breakfast, and the other half had the breakfast gnocchi gnocchi (not a typo) with a few extras. Perfect for a cold foggy morning in Mt Barker. Hot chocolate also absolutely hit the spot. On the more expensive side but again, perfect if you dont do brekkie often.
This cafe is bloody good, a hidden gem at aldgate. Really nice interior design, everything is tidy, pretty and chic made me want to sit for hours. The food are really nice..who would have a thought made an omelette with indian taste. Yes I had indian omelette. It was good. And diy breakfasy also killa. The portion os decent, my stomach were full. We spent all up $55 for two breakfast, coffee and soft drink. I was pretty satisfied with everything, food, service and ambience. There are three section, indoor ground floor, upper floor and outdoor.
Went for brunch with a part of x8 and everyone loved their meal selections, generous and flavorful with great coffee. Enjoyed a bottle of bubbles too! Service was just what we needed for a big group and you do your orders at the counter. Only hitch was it was a bit warm early on before someone hit the AC and it kicked in as we were upstairs.
Heard this place did a rather tasty breakfast so made the trek up to Aldgate with a group of 7 of us on a Saturday morning. The place was backed to the brim but food and drinks both came out promptly. I believe we may have been served by the most stressed waiter I've even come across, but apart from that I'd definitely say it's worth the drive!
Great food innovative and plentiful
had breakfast and went back for the Friday night dinner
The breakfast juices were particularly good
The service was friendly and quick
An idyllic spot in the beautiful town of Aldgate. A very impressive menu with lots of options. It was definitely very hard to choose something! My pumpkin and feta smash was yum and came with lots of greens which I enjoyed. If anything eggs were slightly overdone, but wouldn't deter me from trying eggs again here. The Cafe itself is very pleasant to sit in. Want to come back to try the French toast!
What a gem of a place just past Stirling onto Aldgate! Came for brunch 2day and had such a wonderful experience. The place looks from the outside like a done up old barn like building, then the inside is trendy with a lime green, black and white decor and alot more spacious than you'd think. The service was simply delightful and even do some cock-of-the-tail which is a complete bonus with brunch time! The food is fantastic and so fresh with a great brunch/lunch menu. Had the avocado and halumi sarnie and then added the recommended mushies and was well worth it! Loved it here and I feel it's a must try! 👌
I absolutely love FREDS. The atmosphere is great and the staff are really helpful and friendly. I come here almost every week and everyone I bring here loves it. The prices are also quite reasonable compared to other surrounding cafes which charge similar pricing if not more. If you happen to stop off here for a coffee make sure you try their monte Carlos because they are to die for!!
After days of eating and drinking we weren't very hungry. Prior to our departure this is one place we wanted to visit as one of our to do places in adelaide. Also recommended by our B and B nearby. We wished we'd gone earlier in the trip. Food was incredible. There was quality and care in each item they prepared and served. Steak was blue as requested. Well seared on outside. Enough to remain blue inside. Many restaurants struggle with this. Dukkah was "home made" as opposed to prebought. Service excellent. 4.5 only as decor wasn't MY taste but it was well done.
Just had an awful dining experience at Tranquilo in Stirling, which reminded me just how special it is when you find somewhere like Fred's.
Always friendly service, great coffee and a great menu with traditional favourites as well as a couple of adventurous choices. The kind of place where you feel at home.
Please, don't change!

This is such a cute place!
A real buzz about the cafe and menu with something for everything. I was sorely tempted by rather yummy looking burger and fries (!) but was a little better behaved with interesting special board offering of chicken and grain salad .... though diet went south with a slab of tangy lemony cheesecake.
Interesting noodle broth looks like a must for a cooler day and good coffee and cakes are another reason to return.
Awesome cafe. Its great to finally have a cafe that has gotten it right. Food was beautiful, service was great and decor beautiful. Very clean and fresh. Definitely be back and will recommend.
Had a great time having breakfast at this place. As you step in, you are welcomed by the fragrant smell of coffee and also the wonderful selection of cakes at the counter. The decor was minimalistic and there were plenty of room available . Had the croque madame which is highly recommended. The brioche toast was accompanied by layers of ham and mustard and cheese. Coffee is not too bad too. Too bad we came too early but the lunch menu do sound interesting and will definitely be back
A quick word about Fred. As a local I was constantly disappointed with the previous iteration of this business (The Aldgate Providore), I did try hard to like the place but I always got the impression the owner at the time didn’t try particularly hard to like the customers or the hospitality industry in general. I was so happy when it changed hands! I’ve been meaning to give it a review for a while now, literally since half way through the first Croque Madame I ordered in fact. I thought better of it as I was so happy with it at the time I couldn’t string together much more than something like “OH MY GOD, MY HAM AND CHEESE TOASTY…. OH MY GOD…”. Brilliant it was and as has everything else I’ve ordered there since. There’s a real generosity and quality about everything they serve which is something that it was sourly missing previously, there is love in it and plenty of it.
Anyway, I finally got around to handing out my well-deserved and long overdue 5 stars because of my experience a couple of weeks back. I stopped in for a coffee and some morning tea while on a walk with my 3 year old son. Ordered a coffee for myself and a toasted sandwich and milkshake off the children’s menu for my boy. We sat at a table in the breezeway to the side and I received my coffee first. My boy promptly decided to bounce the bouncy ball he’d just acquired from the toy shop adjacent to the café across the table to me and managed to land it straight in my otherwise untouched coffee. Coffee everywhere! One of these moments where part of me was horrified while the other part couldn’t help but be impressed with his first hole in one. Anyway, and I should have said this before, the place was busy at the time but despite that fact the barista must have seen this happen and he left his station came out to see us and insisted on making me a fresh coffee. The man is a legend. Next came my boy’s toasty and milkshake. The kid’s milkshake is served in a tiny milk bottle with fancy straw (as is the fashion of the time) which I always think is a bit rich considering what you tend to be charged for them. However, the waitress also gave us the remainder of the milkshake in the big stainless steel cup it was made in so that we could top him up if needed. Another legendary move! Then the toasty off the children’s menu…. Now I realise it is just a toasty and even the bad ones are generally alright but this thing was amazing. About a 1.5cm of ham, Jalsberg cheese and tomato on thick sourdough. Obviously grilled in a pan with butter and served with some nicely dressed rocket. Simple and delicious. The only complaint I could imagine having is that it was far too big for your average kid but I helped him out with it, that’s just the kind of loving Dad I am. I’d be happy with one of them for myself any day of the week, it was sensational.
It was an entirely positive experience as have all my other experiences at Fred been. Many a fine establishment are complacent when it comes to what they serve from the children’s menu, this place is not. Kid’s can expect the same quality of produce as everybody else and any business that goes to the trouble of upholding their very high standards for the little people gets 5 full marks from me any day of the week.
It's a disgrace that this place currently has a lower rating than the Aldgate Cafe. It is miles ahead of that place in every possible way and has nothing in common with it apart from a post code.

One hungover Saturday, I (Amanda) drag myself out of bed for a family lunch at FRED Eatery. Situated in picturesque Aldgate in the Adelaide Hills, the drive through the rolling hills does not make my queasiness any better! Aldgate's main street is very small making FRED Eatery easy to find. FRED is a lot bigger than I was expecting with two levels of dining and an outdoor area for those sunnier days. Today we take a seat indoors near the counter and peruse the menu. It doesn't take me long to decide as Reuben sandwiches are my weakness. We order and pay at the counter...why oh why is there no table service on this hangover day of mine?!
Encouraging movements in Aldgate
I can say that the pickings in Aldgate are slim – the Pump has new management, but they are yet to show us that they have regained the ability to successfully plate anything other than a chicken schnitzel (we tried the entire menu, and following that would only order schnitzels). We were warned about the Chinese take away but risked it anyway – let’s just say that the experience was so strange that we won’t be going back. Representation of fast food is present in the form of pizzas and fish and chips. Both are ok, but they come with an unhealthy dose of post consumption remorse. So, with this reality in mind, from what I experienced on the weekend at ‘Fred’, things are moving in an exciting direction.
The cafe now known as ‘Fred’ has been through a few transformations of late. I’ll limit my assessment of non-food related items. The new fit-out is clean and modern while retaining a little bit of charm. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, intelligent and, where appropriate, funny. The proprietor seems a bit serious, but I would be too during such a hefty transformation.
Now…the food. We had the marinated mushrooms, the Reuben sandwich and a couple of coffees. What can I say? We spent the entire time exchanging praise for the food (which was so good that we sometimes augmented the statements with very quiet profanity), and trading bites of each others meal.
I’ll say a thing or two about my Reuben. I have had about five Reubens across SA and Vic, and Fred’s was by far the best. I actually ordered it with some trepidation, as I have been deeply disappointed on every other occasion, but this angst turned out to be misplaced. The sandwich was prepared with great care and balance, and the luxuriousness with which I associate the Reuben was replicated on my plate. A generous provision of tender corned beef lay beneath what I suspect was homemade sauerkraut (not too tart but retaining key flavour notes). It was topped with a tasty melted cheese and served with a side of Russian dressing. It met my expectations on every level (except the pickles were those weeny little nubby things rather than a proper kosher pickle – although I’m happy to overlook that).
From what I tasted, the mushrooms were also excellent. The coffees were both very good (I can’t say excellent, as I’m a bit of a coffee snob, and it usually takes a while, and some gentle negotiation with a barista, to get a great coffee).
Next visit to Fred’s will be for breakfast – if you don’t hear from me, it was excellent too.
Aldgate in Autumn is breathtaking. I'm so glad my friend and I decided to visit this beautiful part of Adelaide on a cool May day, and even happier that we chose FRED as our breakfast destination. We both ordered 'Asparagus, Haloumi & Avocado', which was terrific. Chai Latte also went down a treat. I'll certainly be back to try another breakfast item, and/or Friday dinner soon.
On a loverly early summers morning, we decided to go to Fred Eatery in the Adelaide Hills, Aldgate. This is a new modern style Cafe / Restaurant with a fresh green & white decor, blond wooden tables and chairs and parquet flooring, enhanced by glistening tiles and lots of potted plants. Four seperate dining areas, including upstairs and alfresco, provide a wide range of seating and vistas, and interesting ornaments and decorations catch the eye constantly.
We selected from a menu that offered an excellent Early Morning Breakfast, 7.30am - a 11.45am. All Day Breakfast 7.30am - 3pm. Lunch 12noon - 3pm. Truffled Scrambled Eggs, and A Little Of The Lot. Both dishes were of a very generous size, cooked to perfection. Fred's unique custom blended coffee was very smooth and tasty, but not bitter. The service could not be faulted, very friendly, efficient, professional. For us the whole breakfast experience was a delight, and will definitely recommend and return.
A lazy Sunday morning, a beautiful day, have taken the dog for a walk and now I wanted to go out for breakfast but wanted to go somewhere new.
I had popped into The Aldgate Providore for a coffee in the past and thought it would be a good place for breakfast one day, so today was the day. I was surprised to see that it had changed names to FRED Eatery. It had been a dark and intimate place but is now very bright and great for summer. There are a few separate dining areas to choose from which I like, it keeps that small cafe feel. We sat in the courtyard at the back (dog friendly) which only has four tables. It is well shaded and has a pleasant feel to it.
I started with a Bircher muesli which was very good (sorry forgot to take a photo), full of flavour and textures. I highly recommend this dish.
I followed this with "Little of everything" breakfast (photo attached). It has two eggs cooked as per your request on a piece of toast (nice toast but way too small). Home made baked beans which were good, a large mushroom, bacon, greens and two boring sausages.
Now my "first world issue", the breakfast was served in a large bowl, caused the food to be all scrunched up and the bowl was cold making the breakfast cool quickly.
The service was very good. Staff were friendly and the food and coffees were served as quickly as you would want even with the place relatively full.
In summary, a nice feel, good staff and decent food.
