Ah, good ol' Pier St Charcoal Chicken; the place to go when you're craving some delicious chicken and chips. Their range is quite good, and it is probably the least-dodgy Charcoal Chicken I've ever been to, food quality standard wise. I've never once been sick from eating here, I've even had some bloody dry ass-chicken, day old flake, dim-sims without any issues; as gross as that sounds. But seriously nothing will ever beat their Charcoal Chicken and Chips by far the best I've ever had in my life time.
This is the gold standard when it comes to charcoal chicken shops. The chicken shop by which all chicken shops be judged (and fall short). Perfectly crispy chips with the right amount of salt. Chicken that hits the mark every time - never dry, never undercooked, perfectly seasoned. Chicken rolls made with fresh chicken and tasty mayo. Gravy is the perfect consistency. Fluffy, golden roast potatoes. Unpretentious, tasty fried chicken. The schnitzel rolls are HUGE and taste so good.
Store isn't fancy, but what chicken shop is. Service is always efficient and the food is fresh, tasty and well priced. What more could you ask for?
Have a soft spot for the good old charcoal chicken of pier street. Always ended up here when the final bell rung for the end of school for a bag of chips with gravy. Their generosity in terms of portion sizes are undeniable, love their fresh and crunchy chips.
Always will have their deals with cheap chickens, burgers and rolls. Long live charcoal 🍗
Don't let their run down appearance turn you away! There is a reason this place is always full.
One of the best chicken rolls I have ever had! In fact, they could only make it better by adding one or 2 extra things onto it such as a bit of red onion. The chicken is never dry and they don't have huge wait times or prices.
They have quite a large menu but I have never had anything bad from here in the last 14 years.
They could, however, do with a bit of a revamp as they look a bit run down.
Been coming to this chicken shop since i moved to the area around 6 years ago. The quality of the chicken is great , always cooked well and chicken is never dry. the chips are the best around they are cooked to order. The highlight is the chicken schnitzel roll my husband swears by it, it also great value for money. This has been our weekly treat for take away i don't see myself going else where any time soon.
If you're looking for a quality feed of chicken and chips, look no further. The chips and gravy are awesome, as is the roast chook. But you can't beat the MASSIVE Chicken Snitz roll they have.
Beautiful succulent chicken, and the chips are always cooked to order. Simply the best charcoal chicken I've had!!
Lamb Gyros Pack. Large portion and delicious
Yummy. Very yum, delicious, crispy, fried chokes. Nice salads.
The most amazing charcol chook i've ever had. Have been getting charcoal chook here for the last 4 or 5 years and have never been dissappointed, super friendly staff, amazing chook and the salads are always a hit, great crispy chips too never soggy. The fried chicken is to die for and then some, we always leave with a bag if there is any left!
Awesome chips and fresh charcoal cooked chicken. This place is great! Delicious chicken marinade and chips are cooked fresh while you wait. This is the kind of chips you would expect in a cafe (Chase Kitchen in Spotswood take note - this is how it's done!). This place is on my rotation of fast food to eat!
Best old school chicken shop ever . Fast and friendly staff, excellent value for money... consistently tasty food and generous servings. i haven't had anything there yet that i haven't liked.
there's a reason why these guys are always busy - it's a neighbourhood favourite. the only downside for me is that they're too tempting and close, so i find myself there at least twice a week! :D
Typical charcoal chicken joint. A group of us long-distance bicyclists rolled into Altona near the 65-km mark of an all-day ride, where we mercifully got to stop for late lunch. I wanted something junky and full of carbohydrates, but not fish & chips this time. Chicken and chips it was! Pier Street was a couple blocks from the park where everyone downed bikes, but I needed the walk to stretch my legs. The two pieces of fried chook and the "cheap as" chips were decent, nothing special. I grew up in the state of Maryland in the U.S., where my mom would often take us to black-owned fried chicken shacks. ("Maryland chicken" means something different there to what it does in Australia.) This would have been considered average in Maryland, not quite as good a crust on the chicken skin in my boyhood memories, but certainly not bad. At $9.50 for chicken, chips and a 600-ml bottle of Pepsi, I was happy and re-energised for the ride up the bay to Melbourne.
Best chips and chickens. Surprised about the fried chicken taste. Best than any other shops. Fast and great services. And you will happy with the prices as well.
Great. Best chips, also love fried chicken pieces.
Nice chicken and the best chips!!
Came here for a Friday lunch and decided on the good ol 1/4 chicken pack.
$9.20 with a can of drink included, pretty good deal these days.
We sat out the front of the shop, chicken was very good, typical charcoal taste with tasty meat falling off the bone.
Chips were great, nice and fresh but not enough chicken salt even though I asked for extra.
Good quality food all up and friendly service, would come back for sure.
The charcoal chicken was very flavourful and fall-apart tender. I ordered it with gravy but I didn’t need it as it was juicy throughout. Seafood salad has actual prawns in it!
🥪 Chicken Schnitzel Roll
You might have noticed already that I’m on a search to find the best chicken schnitzel rolls in Melbourne. Growing up in Altona, this was the go-to Charcoal Chicken shop for everyone, and the roll here was definitely a favourite. A focaccia bread roll with a flavoursome, crispy schnitzel, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. Service is always friendly, the prices are low and the portions are large. I believe they have changed hands over the past couple of years but to me it still tastes the same. Great hot chips!
Great takeaway food. Always a pleasure to interact with and they know my sons favourite order, they’re patient with him while he learns to manage his pocket money budget and order there. I wish I could make their gravy at home!
Good value and everything to expect from a charcoal chicken. Little more cleaning of furniture and some interior basics.
