Review Bar Asia - Annandale

Ordered chicken pad thai for lunch the other day and wasn’t really happy with what I got. I couldn’t taste any sourness from tamarind that a pad thai should taste, but instead was on a sweeter side (the lemon slice helped a bit to neutralise that sweet taste which I didn’t really enjoy). The menu has quite a range of asian dishes but from trying this simple dish I believe that they are trying to hard to have such a wide range of cuisines. Maybe they should have focus on a couple dishes and upgrade their games on flavours. The portions was good but actually was lots of rice noodles instead of other necessary ingredients for a pad thai such as bean sprouts and chives. Price is on a higher range and they also surcharge for card payments (why though??).

Hit and miss unfortunately, which is not that surprising for a restaurant trying to cover so much ground in terms of cuisines. Starting with the good, the char kway teow is delicious, a very generous serve with a lot of different ingredients mixed in. It has a nice wok- burn as you'd expect. The 5-spice chicken was far too sweet for my liking, though the chicken is tender. The laksa, however, was atrocious and I couldn't even finish it. I went back to read the menu to confirm this was indeed supposed to be a Malaysian laksa, and not a Thai laksa, because it was watery and sour, and the tofu puffs tasted absolutely wrong. Complete fail. I will still order char kway teow from here, but I'm not sure I dare try anything else now. Prices are reasonable, and service is quick and friendly.

I have ordered the chicken fried rice from here many times and today the portion size was considerably less than usual. I called to see if the portion sizes have changed and they haven’t. The restaurant told me to go to Uber eats about it. Not their problem. Unless they’re saying the Uber driver ate half my dinner how is it not their problem? Now I’m thinking the service is just as bad as the inconsistent portions. Poor experience all around.

SOOOO AVERAGE! So Underwhelmed. The portion of meat to noodles is like 20/80 it’s a joke! The one meal tasted like they threw pasta sauce on noodles and chicken. Best part of the meal was the prawn crackers 😂 Order somewhere else!!!

Food was really tasty! So far the best Asian food I’ve tried around Annandale! I gave 4 starts just bc I think they could improve their presentation and the costumer service! Give it a try to those veggie spring rolls 😍. To die for!

A must try duck spring rolls and handmade dumplings. Went there with friends and we enjoyed the food very much, it was outstanding! Tried the noodles too and it was also great.

One of the best Asian Vietnamese street food around Sydney. Recommended!!

Seriously the BEST fried rice in Sydney! Order the vegetarian one! Better than the chicken fried rice. We always order via the Bar Asia app and pick up. Bar Asia staff are friendly and super fast with fulfilling orders. They package their food in biodegradable packaging rather than plastic containers. The fried rice portion is a lot! They always compact the rice into the biodegradable packaging. Thank you Bar Asia! So tasty!

The worst vegetarian fried rice I have ever eaten I ordered fried rice and got brown rice that was inedible and after calling they did not care Never going back again Used to be good but they don't care Used to go every week and they are just a rip off

I love Bar Asia. Delicious, fresh food every time. There's a dish to suit everyone - my fussy four year old, my partner who loves blow-your-head-off curries and me, who's in between! Can't go wrong for a quick lunch, dinner or takeaway.

Food is good but having no delivery or Uber eats/foodora/Deliveroo option is really disappointing. Staff are friendly and apologetic - management: please consider the delivery options

Not recommended. We ordered online Singapore noodle with virtually nothing but noodles, Sashimi quality Salmon (fried )with papaya salad (without papaya ) tofu rice paper rolls no herbs no flavor a bland relatively expensive disappointment.

This actually tasted a lot better than it looked. Take away dinner from a local joint that I've generally stayed clear of .. but perhaps they have new management now?
Anyway the beef rendang was really good. Nice fatty brisket, slow cooked in a thick tasty rendang sauce, with buttery, perfectly cooked rice. The only criticism is that there wasn't enough sauce, the dish got a little dry just after half way through.

Love this place, it's become my local for our takeaways. They have great healthy options if your watching the waist line or if your going gluten free. The turn around is quick, the meals are well priced and staff are friendly....what more could you ask for. My favourite meal is the lemongrass chicken vermicelli.

This place does quick Asian meals. I had the char khay teow noodles ($14.90) and my friend prawn laksa ($15.90) The noodle portion was moderate and mostly noodles not much meat or prawns, the flavor was ok. The laksa was more generous in size although a little sweet to our liking.

Went to the Bar Asia in Parramatta, really tasty food! Great service, we shared dishes and did not go hungry. They're still getting an alcohol licence, but Byo for now. Definitely try the desserts!

The service here is really good. Nice place to get a good meal served quick. I had Steamed Pork + Shitake Dumplings and Chicken Pad Thai. The dumplings were delicious as usual. Pad Thai could do with some more tamarind to add some more sourness to the dish. Apart from that the food is great.

Most overrated overpriced Asian food in this area. Sad excuse for calling noodles in a pan froze up Asian food. Portions are small for the price you pay.

Food is always good, but two out of two takeaways they've omitted part of our order. They take the convenience out of convenience food. Open the sealed bag, and check it before you leave!

Overpriced and smaller meals than 12/18 months ago. I used to buy from this place two to three times a week while living in Balmain (3+ years ago)

Been there a couple times now (2014) and they are very over priced, the meals are half the size and have gone up in price $1-2 dollars per each. The prawn crackers are tiny, you get maybe 20 in the box and cost $4 :(

Service was quick, and the bbq pork hoikken noodles was very tasty as was the Singapore combination noodle, however in my opinion they are riding off their reputation won a few years ago and not worth the money nowadays, if you pop over ANZAC bridge you have much better options on better tasting cheaper asian food.

No way. It's a really awful place, the older waitress is very rude to the point of being aggressive, the food is bland and overpriced. An experience not to be repeated.
Old School
They have changed!. Came here the other night, they have changed hands, looks better, their new dishes were really good the Saigon Bo Kho had a feature in the SMH Sunday life recently was delicious. They have added more tables inside so you can eat-in. They have monthly specials too, so now i definitely have more options in Annandale.

Disgusting. The food here was so bad that I ended up throwing it out. I got the black bean beef stir fry and I could barely eat half of it. Would not recommend to anyone, even people I don't like.

Bit overpriced for what they serve!! Colourless, tasteless food to be frank. Definetly, annandale deserve a better Asian restaurant !!
Chef
Have to agree with others when they say they succeed because they have little competition. Dishes are either really good or really bland. Good service and I've never had food poisoning from them so that's a plus...

If you want to bore your tastebuds to death.... As Nicole and Kristin have stated, this place would probably shut down if it weren't the only cheap(ish) noodle place in Annandale.

My boyfriend ordered the beef rendang, which was generous in meat portions and flavoursome in sauce, but contained no vegetables at all.
I ordered the combination hokkien, sans chicken and pork. There was an audible snore coming from my taste buds as I forgivingly chewed through a generous portion of noodles, a few prawns and something the menu insists are fishcakes.

If you hate vegetables, love soy-and-soy-alone flavour and paying around $12 for mostly noodles, then you will surely dig Bar Asia.

Combination Fried Rice. I'm a regular combo rice deal, its my Friday night dinner, I wont rave to much because the waiting lines might grow.

Its a great business franchise.. they will go national one day i reckon, but can they keep it real!

Avoid. Flavorless, oily and overpriced. I think it survives because there's nothing else like it in Annandale.

Most dishes are excellent. The rendang and the hokkien and rice noodles are great.some other dishes are very average. Great snappy service. You get in and out quickly and the portion sizes are generous.

Across the menu a bit hit and miss, the dumplings are abysmal and most stir fries average. A shame since Annandale doesn't feature any other Asian restaurant. Maybe that explains the business they do get.

Rendang yes, stir-fry NOOO!. Two dishes, two totally different experiences - firstly, the beef rendang was decent. It started off being quite sweet, but happily the other flavours and a little chilli heat balanced it out in the end. The beef was slow-cooked and tender too. However my "stir-fry" was abysmal. They gave me the wrong dish: I ordered Malaysian chilli sambal tofu and vege stir-fry but the dish I received was some kind of satay. I think. It was so bad I couldn't even be sure of that. Think insipid, beige sauce, overly thickened with cornflour until almost jelly-like, and absolutely smothering soggy vegetables. Oh and 2 PIECES of tofu. Seriously, a jar of Kantong and frozen vegies in the microwave would taste better.

Excellent Beef Rendang. I don't really agree with the negative reviews of this place - sure it might be a bit pricey, but there's little competition in Annandale (for once). The beef rendang is really superb, I've not managed to try anything else in three visits - I'm not sure what that says!

OK food, but small servings. "extra vegetables" is extra money for same size. Go to King Street instead.
