Amazing from start to finish.
Delicious Japanese food made with high quality ingredients. A sophisticated, but laid back atmosphere and good service.
Food was amazing! Sat outside in the sun, staff were very accommodating, even though they were getting busy. We had a few shared pieces and wanted to order more - gyoza, fried chicken and the beef donut was a must must try! Will definitely be back.
Refined and airy design with modern Japanese menu. Between 3 we tried the prawn sandos, the kingfish sashimi, the tuna tataki, the wagyu tataki, the pork gyoza and the daily hand roll which was salmon belly. Everything was fresh and tasty. I particularly enjoyed the wagyu tataki and the hand roll. The wine list was also nice. Service was friendly but a little slow. I assume this was only due to being quite busy. Overall a lovely dinner option.
From the initial moment we walked in the door until the last bite of the iced vo vo. Food spectacular. The Sea Bream, the Hiramasa amazing. The Cod was outstanding. Sashmim is some of the best Ive eaten. Sonny Chiba is a real gem. Service is fantastic, wine list is very impressive.
Great night out with a difference...amazing food and staff and atmosphere.....and lots of interesting vegetarian dishes...would definitely recommend...
Outstanding food and service. My favourite Japanese place in Melbourne. Really cool vibe inside too. Kingfish to die for. Fried chicken a must have. Wagyu beef donut is the star of the show.
Excellent food and stunning wabi sabi vibe. We love this place. Great cocktails and wine list. Can’t rave about it enough. Tuna Is fantastic. Purple Hash is a favourite.
The food is really good in general. The only thing to pick on is that the tuna doesn’t look very fresh. The colour looked kinda dull and it doesn’t taste very good. Other than that, everything is amazing, the wine is good, cocktail is great. The steak is a bit cold when it gets to our table 🤷🏻♀️
Fabulous , there last nite.
Service great, ambiance super, great colour and texture to the walls and the complementary furnishings.
We were up stairs , next time must test out the ground level.
Wagyu doughnuts to die for , the mysterious batter on the fried chicken scrumptious. fine flavors.
We chose a Rose and ( with advice from our great waiter ) that blended so well.Presentation of the food was great , it didn't have the feeling that I get sometimes that it had been "overhandled" and moved around a lot to create a tedious presentation.
This was a very smooth & tempting appearance.
Desert left for next time.
We shall be back , Jason. Clare aka cassie
From the moment we were seated until departure was a fantastic dining experience. Yes, the restaurant was busy and somewhat "loud" but with such excellent food and amazing service you cant blame the masses flocking to this fantastic hidden treasure en masse. Service was outstanding and seamless, the king fish was beautiful, sashimi was some of the best Ive eaten in Melbourne. Sonny Chiba is a welcome addition to the Melbourne restaurant scene.
We just love this place. The great vibe starts before you enter. This little local neighbourhood strip is quaint yet lively and directly across the road from Toorak Station. On our fourth visit last night we had pre dinner drinks at Toorak Cellars which is a fantastic wine bar in the same strip, then strolled down a few doors to Sonny Chiba. The welcome is always warm, relaxed and professional. On each visit there there have been plenty of staff and service is very efficient. As for the food ... it’s just so good! Really fresh ingredients. They have a dedicated sushi chef so we have started each time with the raw feature selection platter. The fish melts in you mouth. Last night we followed that with the beef donuts, gyoza and purple hash ( crispy rice, tempura ,eggplant, mushroom and yuzu). All were so delicious and washed down with a yummy Beaujolais suggested by our waiter. We are already looking forward to our next visit.
Enjoyed the pork belly skewers and the gyoza probably the most . Everything was pretty solid with the service being efficient and the ambience pretty chill at the time we went . Thought the prawn sando was a little underwhelming .
First impression of Sonny Chiba is its very busy. The staff were extremely welcoming from the "get go" and quite accommodating. The menu hits all the right notes. The sushi and sashimi were some of the best Ive eaten. The menu is very genuine, with a good selection of both vego and vegan dishes. The wine list has something for every body and is well thought out and priced accordingly. Was an excellent night all in all. Would highly recommend to lovers of fine Japanese food.
We had such a great meal here last Sunday. Really, really delicious food (the fried chicken is amazing!!) and the staff were lovely. The restaurant was intimate - a great date location!
Fantastic. From the moment we were warmly welcomed and taken to our table to the incredible food, Sea Bream was most impressive, Cod was divine and the King Fish was simply beautiful. The menu is simple but by far some of the best eating Ive had here in Melbourne. Sonny Chiba is Melbournes best kept secrets, but this wont last long. Staff were outstanding. To be only a month old and to have been this good! Outstanding.
Went for dinner on Friday night and was blown away as soon as we walked in. The restaurant has a simple yet beautiful interior. I could tell that the interior was deeply thought. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who showed us to our seats, which happened to be right next to where the sushi/sashimi chef works his magic!
I am a pescetarian, so I ate seafood only. The salmon and tuna sashimi was absolutely delicious. As mentioned before, the sushi chef slices the sashimi right in front of you which is an extra bonus!
We also had blue eye cod with scallop mousse. Highly recommend!
I had the passionfruit fizz cocktail which was refreshing and tasty!
This is a great hidden gem in Armadale!
Fantastic fit out and great to have a chef embedded in the front dining room. The food was flawless, some of the best Japanese i have ever had with a range of innovative options. Service exceptional, would be 5/5 for me if not for the noise level (machine gun) in this restrained chic dining space. I know that makes me sound like an old nag but some sound panels would add to what is otherwise ethereal dining. I hear there’s a courtyard coming soon perhaps that’s for me?! Welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
Awesome food and place. First time here. Great vibe. Friendly staff. Food fresh and tasty and really thought this place is a 10/10. The atmosphere was sensational and really enjoyed eating dinner here. Looking forward to coming for years to come.
We came here on their first week of opening and was impressed. We enjoyed every single dish. The waygu tataki and hibachi grilled pork belly were both excellent. The kingfish sashimi was beautifully plated as well. The gimlet is not to be missed! Service was warm and welcoming. We will return.
