Review Phillippa's - Armadale

Dan Elliott
Delicious baked goods, bright and friendly service. Lots of bread and pastries to chose from. The sausage roll we had was very tasty and flavoursome. The lemon tart had a nice citrusy, creamy flavour as well.

Lovely service today, let down by unbelievably bad coffee, which is better described as a tepid cup of milk. So bad that despite the outrageous price of coffee these days, had to be thrown out. We got 3 different cakes, which were also a bit lacklustre, except for the cardamon one, which was lovely, tasty and fresh. The almond croissant was mediocre at best and the rhubarb cake was not at all fresh and would have be warmed to be edible. Wouldn't return.

Hands down the best pastries(both savory and sweet) I’ve had in Melbourne. Service is fast and friendly as well. If you’re in the area do drop by. Even if you’re not in the area, drop by! I think this place is a hidden gem worthy of making a trip 😋😋

A bit of hit and miss. I ordered veg pastry, brownie and latte. The brownie was the best I have ever had - crusty shell but heavenly soft inside with some chocolate bits. Latte was average. Veg pastry was horrid - beautiful crust but the filling was wayyy too salty to enjoy.

The savoury pastries were delish, especially the sausage roll with relish. Lovely lady at the counter and beautiful bakery!

The workers were so nice to me. They made the best extra hot latte for my mother and she liked it very much. Thank you for your hard work!

Delicious light baked goods. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had sandwiches for lunch, and they were excellent!

I called in very late last Friday, to my delight they had a few things left . Amongst a couple of the quality items I purchased was the pear and caramel bread and butter pudding which had just come out of the oven . My family loved this dessert I will be returning it received big praise from my family . In addition the lady that served me was so accomodating and lovely even though it was the end of the day . This is what customer service is about .

Lovely service; the staff are all warm and welcoming.
Perfect coffee (I’m dairy free!) with a wide range of unique desserts to choose from.

Every neighbourhood needs a bakery like Philippas! Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked goods in the morning!
*
📍Philippas Bakery
High Street Armadale
*
Overall score: 17/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: neighbourhood armadale bakery with pies
*
Review: if you feel like having a quick bite around armadale, Philippa’s is your best bet. There were limited indoor seats and it was a chilly day, but we got a seat inside within 5 minutes. The chicken and leek pie ($10) went well with the accompanying tomato relish, which was a bit sweeter than usual.

Portions were generally on the smaller side, but it suited our preference for smaller meals. We generally manage our expectations when we have coffee at a bakery, and this was slightly better than average bakery standards.

I also love that the bakery sells a wide range of cookies and bottled sauces which would make great gifts for family and tourists. Will definitely be back if I’m shopping in the area.

Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Their olive bread is so addictive. I have been known to finish a loaf in one sitting! Other than that, the coffee and cakes are ok, but it's a bakery first and foremost.

Magnificent. Ordered savoury tarts and cakes as part of the catering for a funeral. People commented on how delicious the food was and they were right. Highly recommend the hazelnut meringue cake. That disappeared so quickly, as did the victoria sponge. They were very easy to work with and totally reliable.

I’ve just been in the store and purchased a small Carrot cake, paid $ 25, so overpriced for quality you can get anywhere else in the area.
Nice settings and produce though, the bread choice looks very nice and most people would go in for the coffe.
Sadly, I won’t go back again.

Terrible and terribly expensive. The food we had at lunch simply wasn't fresh. The croissant was stale and tasteless and the bread for the sandwich was also stale. Very poor at any price.

I really enjoy the food here, especially this time of year, for the Hot Cross Buns. They're a little pricy but after devouring many types at different outlets selling Hot Cross Buns, Phillippa's definitely have the nicest! Yum!

Ordered a chicken fancy pants sandwich. Ten bucks. One side of the bread had been left out too long and had became stale. Ok so they don't use glad wrap. Perhaps offer to toast it like their regular next door to me had done. Shame..

No milk alternatives for their coffees so I never get my coffee from here. Crazy how much business they would lose for this decision. After living in the area for two years I've really tried to like this place, but the service is usually pretty atrocious. Every time I walk in I can't tell who's being served and who's waiting. Last time I was there, after serving the customer in front of me the staff member kept going about her business behind the counter without so much as a greeting or a 'I'll be right with you'. I eventually got served but the wrap I bought was disgusting - tasted like raw dough and flour. I will add that I have had sourdough bread from here before and it was good. That's about all I would bother going back here for given the abundance of decent food and coffee options in the area.

Can't go past this place without stopping in for a coffee and cake. It is like walking into an old fashioned bakery. All cakes and breads look delicious. Coffee is lovely, even though they don't have skim milk. Made to perfection. Have had a few cakes here but my favourite by far is the lemon tart. I am just in heaven when I eat this......

No skim, soy or almond for a coffee?!. I'm a bit astounded they don't do anything but full cream milk for a coffee but nevertheless it's a bit strange to say the least. A bit of a time warp in that respect but after a few times coming here the honey oat loaf is terrific, the Parmesan sables are delish and the mixed nuts are very spicy though -had a bit of a spice attack the other day. Lots of cool things on the walls to buy like condiments and sauces and the staff are friendly.

Did not end up eating here as they don't provide soy milk for coffee. No, whole organic milk is not a good solution for my lactose intolerance. Does diarrhea for breakfast sound okay to you?? I mean cmon... This is Melbourne! Give us the options, at least.

Also one staff member was audibly getting testy with the others as there was a bit of a rush on... "Can such-and-such please come up here and do some work? We don't have time to run coffees!" Just unpleasant and unnecessary for a bakery on a Sunday morning...

Plus side is - it all looked great and we would have love to have stayed.
Food Jerk
How come you guys don't do skinny milk or Soy milk with the coffee? I brought few of my mates here for a coffee and they were disappointed that there's no skinny or soy milk. Any reason? Besides that everything else is awesome especially the BROWNIES and the BRIOCHE ROLLS.

An Australian institution that keeps thriving. Coffee okay, cakes and pastries are top notch and at decent prices. Fantastic location. Chocolate brownie is a must try.

Wonderful croissants, shocking staff and $17.50 for a bag of 7 cookies! The same salted chocolate rye cookie was retailing on their shelf for $2 each which should have been $14 total. They got me good on that rip off. While we were there there was 3 other customer complaints. Selling out of croissants before 11.30? Surcharges on card transactions? Didn't know if a bag of nuts was gluten free? The staff didn't seem well equipped to appease customers. It might be delicious but products that are overpriced leave a bad aftertaste

Don't use free range eggs. For a bakery/cafe that charges premium prices for its products not to use ethical free range eggs is outrageous. They purport to use organic eggs from a farm that protects its chickens from the elements - foxes rodents - so they keep them caged BUT they're fed organic food. A bit like saying getting locked in your toilet forever to save you from being hit by a bus is the best thing for you!

The bakery consisted of breads, pastries, cakes, brownies (by the block!), jams and other small goods (like homemade vanilla essence – which I can’t wait to attempt). We went halfsies in a rhubarb, apple and cinnamon shortcake and an orange and almond croissant. Both very very scrumptious, and actually I’m craving a bit of that cake right nowwww (just look at the picture and you’ll understand why!)
Let Me Feed You
These buns can be routinely found in our home around Easter, mainly because we can buy them locally and they're predictably delicious, despite being produced in quite large quantities compared to the other bakeries we sampled.

A Guide to High Street Armadale, Melbourne Those who live around Armadale tend not to venture too far – they have everything they need within walking distance. From quaint cafes and impressive restaurants to a thriving antiques trade, art galleries and shopping galore, it would be a shame to let the locals have all the fun. I grew up just north of Armadale’s High Street, the Melbourne shopping precinct that dates back to the late 1800s. I used to have swimming lessons at Recreation gym before it turned into Goodlife, but I didn’t stick around long enough to reap the benefits when Pressed Juices opened next door. It doesn’t matter – all I cared about at that age was getting my hands in the glass jar of killer pythons on the front desk, a fair trade between my parents and I for my attendance. Since then a flurry of high fashion stores have opened on the strip, popping up next to antique warehouses and shops that have been around for decades. It’s a comfortable mix of old and new, as evident in the ornate architecture that harks back to the post-war boom. Things really started to happen in the area in 1879 when the first trains ran through the suburb, removing it from iso

--2016--
The cream for the scones is now spreadable!! Woo hoo!!

---2015---

Provided feedback to Phillippa's that it's impossible to spread the cream that comes with the scones as its so chilled it's effectively butter; 3 weeks late nothing has changed. Still serving the same non-spreadable "cream". Please take onboard this feedback - I actually like the scones, just hate having to ask every time to be given something I should have been given to start off with. Lattes however have gotten much better - a strong latte is now actually a strong late; good job on that one!

---2014---

I do love this little bakery, but I would love it more if they did skinny milk and allowed EFTPOS under $10.

-----30 Dec, 2014-----

Great little coffee & cake shop - staff need to pay a little more attention to what a strong latte is though, warm milk with a sniff of coffee just doesn't cut it. I will return as I've been going here for years, however next time I'll try my take away coffee in store & have them remake it if it's not what I ordered. Lesson learned!

RUDEST manager. Brought my friend here and was raving about how good the food is. She is gluten intolerant and simply asked if they had any gf options. The mid 40s male manager with glasses who want even serving us turned around and quite rudely said 'we don't have gluten free..This is quite obviously a bakery'. There's no need to speak to anyone, let alone paying customers like that. I won't be going back.

Liked it but with a few concerns!. Went into Phillippa's for the first time last week, a very beautiful store which neatly displayed all of the famously known Phillippa's preserves, pastries, biscuits, slices etc.
The staff were helpful and friendly, answering my numerous questions about the vast selection of items to buy. It was difficult choosing!
The prices were quite high, especially for the quiches and lemon tarts, i deviated from purchasing a small as it fed about 4 people for an astonishing $40!
That is one thing i would reconsider!
Another is the milk selection! No soy or skinny really reduces the clientele intake, as many of my friends have said they don't go there merely because of that!
It is a shame because the products are beautiful, with no preservatives and additives.

The bakery in Armadale was inviting . That is until we met the staff! Every enquiry was met with blank stares and rude replies. I can't understand why the management don't do some serious staff training with all these bad reviews . Ok Philippa's you don't do skinny milk or soymilk or have a toilet and you certainly don't want to be helpful but at least you can try to do it with a smile.

Everything is so authentic; except the customer service. I would buy my bread from Phillippa's every day, it's an absolute delight. Pity the staff don't match the produce.

Authentic Cafe. I came here with my Grandma for afternoon tea after wedding dress shopping.
The staff were really nice and the coffee and cake were delicious. It may be a bit on the pricier side, but it's worth it for the quality. My Oma loved the raspberry and plum tart, she makes one exactly the same (it's her specialty) and thought they had done a great job. Would definitely return, Phillippa's bread's are the best too!

A long black is $4.... Same price as latte, absurd.

I Loved my coffee and brownie. This place really knows how to do things right. Also foodie face that leaves reviews why do u bother going to cafes just try opening your own cafe ?
FoodieFace
Ridiculous that they do not make coffee with low fat milk upon request!
Briana
Great food but I encounted the worst customer service at the Armadale store, very rude staff and I was so uncomfortable that I left as soon as I could!!! I will never go back there again!

Service is terrible. The bakers are great, food is awesome. staff are rude. pity.

I havent actually eaten here yet but have bought things to take away. Amazing! A couple to mention are rhubarb crumble and spinach feta fritatta. Both are so nice! Obviously very fresh good quality ingredients used. It takes me half an hour to drive to this place and i would not hesitate taking the drive to buy something from here. Staff are extremely friendly, often throw in a little complimentary piece of whatever it is Im buying. Love it!

Classic Purists. I love the fact that the loaves will never be identical, because the products are made without any improvers or stabilizers. The same as what would have been made 100 years ago and they are Phillippa’s not like any other bakery in Melbourne.
The Lemon Tart is to die for and the Fruit Muffins are almost not really even muffins as they have more Cranberries, fruits and nuts in them then dough!
I also love the Dukka as it’s not just a spice mix like everywhere else.
Yes – They are a bit posh, but you pay for what you get these days.

Food good, Service not so. My wife and I just stopped in for coffee and snack. Ordered a scroll, they brought it over, we asked (politely) if it were possible to have it heated, the guy took it from me and pulled a face to his fellow staff member as he put it in the microwave/oven. It took some time, and it was never returned to us, so I asked for it, and they were like, "oh, whoops... here you go". Then when we left, we were given no acknowledgement.

Its a shame, as the food was nice. Although $11 for a packet of biscuits was a little steep I think.

Delicious!. We were there on Sunday for a quick lunch - the sausage rolls with relish, were delicious and the coffee was great! The staff were delightful too.

Unwelcoming staff. I agree with previous posts about this bakery. Whilst the food is good, staff are unwelcoming and rather rude. I love to give people the benefit of doubt, but after a number of occasions with the same lack of service, its not worth it. There are lots of other places with good food and good service that I would rather return to.

Philippa's products are also stocked in some Coles stores, Thomas Dux, Leo's & other fine food stores. They also have a stall at the Veg Out farmers market. Goods are quite pricey but the fruit muffins & the chocolate brownie are good for an indulgent treat

Phillippa's..not so tasty. What a disappointment!Waited to be seated, but when met with blank stares asked if they were full, staff shrugged their shoulders and smiled.Hate to think if they were busy!!No choice but to leave.Phillippa's certainly left a taste..bad!!

Visited today and was impressed with the selection of treats. So if you have a sweet tooth this is the place to visit. Only let down was the coffee.

Carb central.. If your loooking for a carb overdose there is no better place to treat yourself than Phillippa's. Too many yummy things to speak about. I love that XMAS is around the corner and so are their mince pies!

Not only do they do simple things for lunch like soups, quiches, pasties and sausage rolls, they also sell a huge variety of specialty biscuits, cakes and breads as you can see from this photo. I was tempted to grab a few bags of cookies or muesli on my w
