Review Sushi-ya Japanese Restaurant - Artarmon

Jeff Hui
Service was painfully slow on a Sunday night with inattentive servers, food quality was poor as well. Weekday lunch was alright though, huge portions and great quality for its price.
Rattan Muttoo
Decent Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu and quick service. BYO wine šŸ· and decently priced sushi šŸ£. Easy to get a table on the weekend (Sunday) and great location right next to Artamon station. Worth a visit!

Iā€™d only come back for hot pot (sukiyaki) Okonomiyaki was a little burnt :( and itā€™s veggie one. Unagi don is a too dry. I love unaji but itā€™s too sweet. Overall: average place. slightly more expensive than other places around

Love this place for simple and good Japanese food. No wait on a Sunday night and spent $75 for 3 people (no drinks). Although food was a bit slow in coming out I still go here fairly regularly!

Very nice. I had the karaage; very crispy, lots of chicken, lots of soy flavour. It's a shame there's only a small dollop of mayonnaise and no free additions.

Lovely fresh sashimi as per Artarmons high standards. They also have large shaded outdoor seating, rare for Japanese restaurants, and are super dog friendly (they offered my dog a drink). Great for people watching too!

Sashimi here is not really fresh. Even sushi tastes bad. The menu of the picture is sushi sashimi combination. I didn't want to pay adollar for my food. It is the worst sushi restaurant in Australia.

The food was pretty average. Definitely not worth the 45 min wait!! They should at least warned us before seating us given we had kids.

Slow table service and pillows are very itchy, I recommend to buy LEUVIA cushions they are super comfortable. Yummy desserts. Lovely waitresses.

Visited for lunch and ordered salmon and squid nigiri. Also ordered tobiko and ikura gunkan.
The squid was not fresh at all and left the worst taste in the mouth, both my father and I spat it out.
The ikura was left out long so the seaweed ended up adhering to the rice and got soggy and unpleasant.
Salmon and ikura were mediocre.
We also ordered mackerel which was decent but the udon was very under seasoned and too bland to enjoy.
The service was friendly however they were definitely understaffed because we waited nearly 30 mins for sushi....
Would we come again? Never.

This place is great! More convenient for large groups and people than Chatswood! The food is still the same great quality, prices and service as at Chatswood. Itā€™s also super convenient as it is so close to the train station. Love this place!!šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹šŸ˜›

Very nice dinner at Tuesday. Not many people, good service. Just food serviced bit slow. Sushi was not cheap, but taste all right. Unagi rice was beautiful! Love it. The clam noodle is a very unusual to ordinary Japanese dishes, spicy with white thin noodles. Taste plain and not much ingredients in it.

This place is one of many restaurants nestled in this small area next to the train station. There is always people about walking around, eating and shopping for Japanese groceries and items. I came here for lunch after gym (so I was very hungry), craving for noodles and warm soup (despite the hot weather).

prepare for the long wait! we arrived at the restaurant at 6:40 on Tuesday and got one dish after an-hour wait. The Agadashi tofu was a bit cold inside with a thin layer of crisp...the spider roll was ok. not worth the wait though.
Goodtimeeeee
Waited over an hour for a salad.
Only 3 staffs on a Friday night. Definitely understaffed. Some people were waiting 30minutes at their table to be handed a menu. I could tell everybody was very upset in the store. I donā€™t understand why they donā€™t just hire more people knowing this place gets really busy at night. Worst experience Iā€™ve had in a very long time.

Update: I waited 1.5hrs for a seaweed salad

I've eaten at the Chatswood store so many times and since many many years ago I cannot even remember when. When I used to live nearby, it was one of my favourite spots. The Artarmon store doesn't seem as inviting for some reason (maybe because it's split in two and hard to see when the food/waiters are around). It was painfully slow on a Sunday, perhaps there was only one chef or two, but we saw people around us who had been there for quite some time, receive their food long after we sat down. I always enjoy their food so it was still nice, but most likely I will visit the Chatswood branch over this one.

The Saturday lunch visit. Overall, it is not a bad place but need to be careful when you go.

Arrive just after 1pm, weā€™ve informed the food would take 30 mins to be delivered. We acknowledged this, but we waited for just under 1hr in the end. I know 30 mins is not ā€œ30minsā€, but no follow up until the food delivered. Even someone who made a complain received their food earlier than us even they were seated after us.

Other tables seemed the same. Even worse, people received food at different time amongst their companies. For us, we received mine first, then it was 10mins to have food for my mates.

The presentation was good, but any deep fried food was soaked in oil (wasnā€™t drained long enough), water came out from octopus sashimi when itā€™s chewed.

The drink came to us straightway, so the service itself wasnā€™t bad. I think some sort of trouble or disorganising in the kitchen.

I donā€™t mind to visit here again, but I will ask how long it would take...

OMG just had the worst experience here. Arrived at 6.30pm (with kids) and waited half an hour just to get our drinks. The mains came before the entrees. We had to remind the staff to bring other items that we ordered. The kids meals were the last ones to come out. The food was tastey, but there are other places with good food and much better service.

We were here a few times in the past. The first time we were here had to be 2 years ago, the food was painfully slow, it might be because it was a public holiday and the place was quite packed. The last time we were here was yesterday (2nd July, 2017) for Sunday lunch. THe service was very prompt and the lunch combo menu was a good deal. you basically get 2 small dishes for 18 dollars, for example 6 pieces of Salmon sushi roll with fried pork cutlet. Or a small rice bowl with vegetable tempura udon. I have always loved their sushi roll and sashimi, the serving size of the mains are also very satisfying. I think food at their Chatswood store taste better.
Shhh
I had an extremely terrible experience here. I ordered Yakisoba as one of the chef's recommendation. Before I ordered, I asked one of the waitresses whether there is any meat in there and she said yes. Then, when the food came, it was just purely noodles, cabbage and capsicum. I was surprised so I called the same waitress again to confirm it. She said "oh, actually I checked with the chef and the chef said no meat at all". If she has a good customer service skill, she should have asked me first whether I am okay to proceed but she failed to do so. Also, portion is so small. Definitely not worth the value of money.
I won't recommend this place to be honest.

Pretty good japanese rest and the price is decent although on the exxy side for the portion you receive

Need to get rolls in order to get full, love the smokey salmon roll and rainbow roll

The sashimi is also great especially scampi and make sure you get the miso soup for it

Recommend for a group dinner

Authentic Japanese food! Had take away here this week. I ordered salmon and pork schnitzel sets with rice and miso soup. Very nice service and food packings. Highly recommended !

Really good quality food, great ambience and the waitresses are really lovely...
I recommend this to any Japanese food lover
The pork belly is incredible!

I had a very disappointing experience there. Sushiya used to be one of my favourite Japanese restaurant in the area. I guess it's been a while since my last visit, or they may have changed their chefs and management over these couple of years. So the food is awful. Agedashi tofu was served on a plate and cold. There's no mango in their salmon mango and cream cheese roll. Unaju was very small and was served cold. Overall experience is pretty bad and don't think I'll come back to them again.

Nice sushi for a good price. Friendly service and food was presented nicely. The quality of the food does range a bit though, but it is mostly good.

I organised a dinner for 17 people. I booked etc. We all ordered at different times. I ordered the last by far, so there shouldn't have been any confusion. Everyone had finished their meals and i was still waiting for mine. It never came. I asked them several times and still no outcome. Extremely disappointed. And extremely hungry. I missed out on dinner for my best friend's birthday because of bad service and poor English.

Sushi-Ya is a cute little corner restaurant off the side of Artarmon station. We arrived and were seated at a table that hadn't been cleaned yet. I think the restaurant was understaffed last night so we actually cleared the dirty plates onto the edge of the table and grabbed the menus ourselves. After waiting 15 minutes we were served.

We ordered the Agedashi Tofu, Tsukune, Beef Tataki with special sauce, Yakitori, Salmon Don and the Prawn and Lobster sushi roll.

Despite the long wait to order, the food came out quite quickly. All the food was very fresh and tasty. We particularly enjoyed the Tsukune and Beef Tataki and will definitely be ordering them the next time we come back.

Overall a very enjoyable meal. There were many dishes that we were tempted to order, so we'll definitely be back to try more. I'm just hoping next time we go we can be served more promptly.

Situated quietly in a cul de sac by Artarmon station, Sushi Ya was probably one of the first sushi places in Artarmon. Although there have been mixed reviews about the service and food of late, my visit at lunch didnā€™t show any signs of the negative feedback. I couldnā€™t say much about the service during busy periods because I was the first one there but it was attentive as it needed to be and no mistakes were made.

There was a set combo menu and a special bento box for lunch that was pretty good value. I chose the set combo with the salmon sushi and pork and chicken katsu. The salmon was fresh and there were five pieces of well sized sushi as well as three mini salmon nori rolls. The chicken katsu was coated in panko and fried perfectly crisp while moist inside. The Pokr was marinated well and the flavours came through as it was fried to a similar standard as the chicken. There was a Dijon mustard, mayo and katsu sauce that had the distinct WorcestershireĀ sauce come through. The accompanying salad was fresh with a beautifully refreshing carrot ginger dressing.

The entire dish was very good because every single element shone. If their other food was cooked to this standard, there should be no reason why people would complain; about the food at leastā€¦

We're locals and LOVE Japanese food.
This place is always super busy so we gave it a try with high expectations.
We went once a few months ago.
The food was terrible, service was super slow despite the poor staff running around like headless chooks. (which doesn't really make for a relaxing dining experience...)
Every table either didn't get a dish they were waiting for or was complaining about what they had received. I'm not exaggerating. Every table around us was full of disgruntled customers.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt as it was our first visit. Thought they must have just been having a bad night.
Apparently not.
Went back just the other night and it was like deja vu. Food was terrible. Service was very slow.
Staff were running everywhere. Everyone was complaining.
Won't be making that mistake again.
If there's a change of management I hope they make it obvious. I'd love to have a local Japanese to go to but while the current management are running the place, I won't be back.

I have been a massive fan of this restaurant since I was a child. Food is amazing and staff are always friendly and very good customer service. These days, food menu seems to be changing...I am looking forward to seeing new menu soon!!! Ā Photo: Chef's special with three small dishes (Lobster & Prown salad, marinaded sashimi and jellyfish)

Consistently good Japanese. Ā They have the variety of an Izakaya and when busy can be a bit of a wait for the food but it's well worth it. Ā The staff are always helpful and having to run between the two venues seems to work out. Ā I was a little surprised to find such a spot in Artarmon.

Temperamental Japanese below Artarmon railway station. Food quality seems to vary between excellent and how you going....when it's good it's very very good and when it's average it's obviously disappointing. Staff are generally friendly and efficient.

The Best sushi rolls and chicken katsu is made here. Everything is always so fresh when i visit this place and customer service is very quick. Try to get there early as they can get quite busy at lunch times.

I love here Sushi rolls! (avocado, prawn, salmon) Very fresh and tasty. And the price is not so bad. I tried others but the Sushi rolls is the best. I had Sushi many times in Japan(As I grew up in Tokyo!) and the one I ordered is fresh and yummy as what I had before.

This place used to a regular favourite, however last night's dinner was very disappointing. Salads were much smaller than usual and barely dressed, with low quality ingredients (e.g. plain dry white cabbage, with a slither of purple cabbage). The servings of terriyaki fish & salmon were overly salty, thinly sliced and smaller than usual. Sides (e.g. potato salad) tasted strangely unfresh. The salmon/tuna sashimi was the biggest dissapointment - a tiny serving of 6 small generic slices for $18! The last main also came out over 20mins late, meaning the guest who ordered it starting their main when the rest of us were almost finished! When we raised all these concerns with the waitress and asked if the owners have changed, she initially brushed it off, but then said they had a new chef working that night, which shouldn't be an excuse against quality or serving size. Although she verbally apologised there were no other actions taken besides taking our bill with a brisk attitude, despite us politely letting her know our concerns as loyal regulars. Overall a disappointing evening, ensuring we won't return.

Enjoyable food we shared at inexpensive prices. Prompt service with a good atmosphere. Worth seeking out.

Both of us are epic fans of their Soft Shell Crab Sushi Roll, however there was a mix up and out came just Soft Shell Crab, two small soft shell crabs, halved and lightly coated in tempura batter and deep fried until the shell was deliciously crisp and the crab meat inside soft and tender, served sitting in a light soy and topped with salad. Neither of us complained, as there was a lot more crab here! We devoured this with relish.

Overall cheap-ish and tasty. Not excellent but not bad. We tend to prefer this one over the one in Chatswood.

I wasn't expecting much, but Sushi-Ya turned out to be a pleasant surprise, serving authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine. Japanese food is my favourite cuisine, and having lived and eaten in Japan for four years, I am pretty picky about the food quality, particularly with sushi and sashimi. This place meets my standard and gets our thumbs up.

Artarmon has such a cute village atmosphere, complete with an Asian section on the quieter side of the train station. Enter, and it feels like some sort of hidden, secret garden, you'd never think it's just seconds from the train. Here, you'll find the Artarmon branch of Sushi-Ya (the other one is in Chatswood). Agedeshi tofu floats in a light sauce that is spiced with fresh shavings of spring onions. The tofu is dense and substantial holding it's own in the sauce, although I prefer my tofu more silky and delicate. The pork katsu udon is delightful; the clear soup is subtle but amazingly zesty, udon retains firmness in the soup while the pork is crunchy outside and well cooked and tender inside. Very, very hard not to like. Sushi-ya Artarmon 10 Wilkes Ave Artarmon NSW 2064 Ph: (02) 9411 1377

PanaSea. This is a hidden local treasure under our nose! I first went to Chatswood same name, found it good but this is better. Great quantity, quality, fresh, top value. I had dinner tonight & we enjoyed for first time a form of sukiyaki, only $23 which was plenty after a shared serving of smoked salmon avacardo roll. A great night out.

Delicious sushi, good value vs Chatswood. Combinations dishes are awesome.

Great food, nice atmosphere outside. Wife and I went here for an impromptu lunch after another sushi joint we wanted to go to was closed. We had the combination lunch with Salmon Don + JFC and my wife had Salmon Sushi + Spicy Pork. Servings were more than satisfactory for lunch, food was awesome and price @ $18.50 was very reasonable. I also had 2 hand rolls, Tuna + Avo and Salmon +Avo. Again both were excellent and reasonably priced @ $7.20 and $5.50 respectively.

Definately a new favourite for a sushi hit, I can see some future long afternoons spent ordering sushi and drinking Kirin in the garden outdoor area.

Very Poor. I have been 3 times now as I live next door. The service is non-existent. One time, only 2 mains out of 3 were actually served [despite being charged all three] and the last time they forgot to bring the only bottle of wine out we ordered - but again tried to charge us and it almost lead to an argument when paying. I will never make the mistake and go back a fourth time

The sushi was fresh. The teriyaki chicken was too BBQ. I like the environment

Not a great place the service is crap as all staff can't speak much English
And food is over priced and no flavor in any of the meals
RubySlippers
Un-remarkable. Over priced and largely flavourless. I paid $19 for a sushi roll!!!!!!!!!!! I couldnt believe it - granted it was a large suhi roll, but still its just sushi!!!!!

Could have got a sushi roll for $3 else where.

When you over pay for food, you expect the staff and the atmosphere to compensate for the extra expense, but Sushi-Ya is unremarkable.
Chillout
Good food but terrible service. Unless you stalk the wait staff, expacted to be completely ignored. Won't go back, I've had better service with similar quality food. I don't recommend!
