First and foremost, the service was great with very friendly staff. I had their pumpkin smash for breakfast with a couple of flat whites. The food was sensational, and I can't wait to go back again. Their coffee, as one expects in Melbourne, was great.
Definitely worth a visit.
I held a workshop in the private room at Grandpa Joe's and the staff and management were very accommodating! Nothing was too much trouble, our drinks and food were to die for and they even gave me a sample shot of their cold brew coffee. Customer service was fab!
Loved this place much, it's my second time for having coffee and snakes. Very welcoming atmosphere and good service.
Friendly place to grab a drink when every other café is closed at 4pm on Union Rd.
Is the best little cafe in Melbourne, with the most delicious porridge ever. Beautiful people and staff
My favourite local cafe. Very friendly, good food, good coffee, good service. Feel very at home here.
Came in for coffee and stayed for breakfast! do yourself a favour, and get down to Grandpa Joe's!
Love this place. Great coffee and food. The service is wonderful. Always greeted with a smile and a hello. Some of my favorites are the maple bacon and the Reuben.
good food, great coffee, lovely staff. Very patient with my barkey dog.
An awesome place with great food, friendly staff & perfect coffee!
So glad I stumbled across this place today. Friendly staff, delicious food and great coffee. I’ll be back :)
Amazing service. Food came out really quick. Loved the berry bircher. Had heaps of flavour and fulfilling. The soba noodles was also great. Recommend this cafe
Decent coffee, food and service! In terms of prices it’s a little expensive. The menu was a little limited and the cafe itself is on the smaller side. Highly rated the potato hash as an add on!
Regurlaly visit this place - coffee is possibly the best around and staff are always lovely. Specials board is regularly updated but standard menu also has wide variety
I enjoy going to Grandpa Joe. The staff are lovely. Its small, very inviting and the coffee is great. The menu is limited but it’s good. Slightly more expensive than I would expect but it’s a smaller business and I don’t mind paying a few bucks extra because it’s peaceful and not pretentious.
I just come here for the coffee. It's a small venue so you will struggle to get a seat on weekends. Good beans, good vibes. Friendly staff. Great little local.
Popped in off the street for brunch and had a very enjoyable time. Atmosphere was nice and relaxed, not too noisy and unpretentious. Staff were very friendly. Coffee was great, perfect temperature. They had lots of specials, I ordered the smashed avo with feta, dukkah and poached eggs off the board, with a side of potato hash. The hash was amazing, good sized serving and yummy. My other food was yummy too. My partner had a mix of poached eggs and sides and was very happy with his meal.
I would like to see some more vegetarian options, all the savoury breakfast dishes on the regular menu seemed to have bacon or salmon with them. That said, I didn't order off the menu so have no knowledge of whether they are willing to sub out meat for vego options or not (so it hasn't affected this review). All in all a very pleasant brunch.
One of my best brunch experiences in a while - had the chilli scrambles with kranski sausages, amazing!
Friendly staff and an awesome menu, was tough to pick a dish!
Highly recommend.

Cute little venue which is always busy located on Ascot Vales main street. Coffee has been hit and miss here from my past experiences which is unfortunate.
Last time I (Nic) visited which was quite some time go again now (in the scheme of the life of a business) and they had a card limit which sucks when you're trying to just order a takeaway coffee. Happy to adjust my review accordingly if that has changed recently.
Breakfast bun and potato hash combo was so satisfying! The potato hash in particular is amazing. My soy flat white was good, too. Service is very friendly, lots of options on the menu to choose from, my curiosity to try these (and have some more of the potato hash) will likely see me return.
My favourite cafe in union road. I'm not a big fan of breakfast - but these guys have a good menu for non -egg fans! Everything is fresh and made in house- service is good and food is always tasty.
Great little cafe along union road. Grandpa Joe was cosy yet spacious, with a beautiful wall mural and excellently chosen decor. Food was really good, we ordered of the specials, a sweet and sour chicken burger, and off the regular menu the pumpkin and beef sandwich. Burger was flavoursome, although lacking in actual chicken, making it simply not really big enough, especially served without fries. Despite not mentioning it in the menu the beef sandwich was actually just a burger patty on some bread, not really sure how this differs from the pumpkin and beef burger on the menu? However lucky it was tasty. Smoothies were great, decent price and fresh ingredients. I was happy with my experience here, would return and try some of their other items for sure :)
My Uni classmates & I are here regularly for our coffee fix & being nice & close to home I've done breaky & lunch a few times, the staff are hands down always lovely! The food is always pretty good & if you're a fan of the more adventurous drinks, they make their own chai mix & tumeric mix, definitely recommend both with almond milk!! Definitely worth checking out!
We decided to try out this cute little place on union Rd. A road known for its many fine eats.
Stuff were friendly from the get go which is always nice. As for the food.. I enjoyed my burger. However they had forgotten the missus' mushrooms and the poached eggs were over cooked. Hence the average score.
But.. willing to go back and give them another shot in the near future!
We went for breakfast. Menu was interesting. I had the salmon which was very well balanced and I really enjoyed it. The service was a little slow at times but the food came out in a reasonable time. Will return
I'd been here with a friend for brunch a few months earlier & it was great. When a group of about 10 of us had finished a morning jog along the Maribyrnong, I suggested we head to Grandpa Joe. I knew the place was small but thought we'd sit around the tables out the front. When we all arrived the staff were very accommodating & gave us the back room. What a cosy little hideout! This would be a nice quiet spot in winter to read the paper over coffee. Coffees & food were served quickly. Breakfast was great - I had the granola. They were happy to let us pay separately at the end.
My friends and I went for a drive and found ourselves in Ascot Vale. We tried to look for a cafe there and used zomato app and this place popped up with good rating. We went in and checked the place out. The staff were not overly friendly but I can't say they were rude. I had the french toast and also skinny latte. I find the portion of the french toast in the smaller side in comparison to other cafes considering its price BUT! it was definitely delicious! I recommend this place if you are around the area craving for some french toast.
Delish brunch/lunch menu with fresh tasty options. Burgers and sandwiches are amazing and the potato and cheese savoury waffle are next level tasty. Cute deco and friendly staff. Great for a midweek catch up.
Love this little café, great service, nice treats and a favourite with the locals. Had a nice tea and a vanilla milkshake (for my little one) with a delicious orange & almond friand made on premises. Will be back soon to try some more!
Cute little cafe. Great service. The French Onion soup was delicious!! I could eat another bowl. It was flavoursome, generous and fantastic for winter.
Awesome café! The new winter menu is amazing, the sandwiches are an absolute hit! Features the best pastrami I've ever eaten and the specials are killer too! Definitely a nice surprise and one of my favourite cafés around.
Nice little cafe. Amazing coffee, service is good when it's quiet and the menu is ever expanding. Keep up the good work! Like how they open at 7am most days
Fantastic Local! The guys that run the place are super nice, coffee and food is fantastic! Nice atmosphere as well as pretty good music styling as well.
Sat lunch. Awesome burger and pulled pork sanga. Great service.
Great job!. Always quick and friendly service. Great job guys!
A Good Food/Coffee Combination. Went there with my wife and father in law we ate lunch there and had coffee, so far one of the few places in the area that we enjoyed the food and coffee.
Great local place. Tasty good. Straight forward good clean service.
I like it!!. Good menu and fair pricing.
great presentation. quaint little cafe. at this stage id vote it one of the better cafes on union rd. will be back for a milk shake soon
Love this place!. This is my home away from home. Really friendly, lovely staff, offering good honest, tasty food with a smile! What more could you ask for. As a tea drinker, I was also impressed with the great selection of teas and the coffees are also fab! Great local gem.
I feel like I was deprived as a child if this is how most grandparent's cook.. Very impressed with the food, coffee, staff and general atmosphere of GJ's. Had three latte's here over the last fortnight - all have been perfect temp & taste. Also, their vanilla milkshake is nothing if not amazing - if I wasn't portly, I'd be having three of these every day.
I like it. Can I say firstly that I love the coffee cups. That alone is reason enough to visit. Then, the rest of it is pretty good too. Service seemed organised and attentive, food delicious, and coffee excellent. Lots of competition on Union Road these days but this is my favorite go-to place at the moment.
Grandpa is a gem!. I come here a few times for a Sunday arvo coffee.. Coffee is quite consistent.. Tried their little cakes and have found it very tasty... Great atmosphere for me to enjoy a book to read and a cuppa... Keep up the good work
Dropped in here on way to work for a coffee and discovered a gem! Possibly the best coffee I have ever had - will be coming for brunch now to check it out!
Love grandpa joe, great coffee and food. Really like ambiance, especially the 'graffiti' wall art. Staff are warm and genuine.
Yes. Been here twice. its really nice I read in the local paper that. the owner named the café after her grandfather who passed away and his rocking chair and records and record player sit in the corner.
Food is nice. drinks are nice. Only down point is the coffee machine vibrates the floor and the tables.
Having visited this cafe by chance, I really can't get over how cosy it is. A neat little space with the best coffee in the suburb. Being on a strip with some established venues to compete with, this joint stands out with its personal feel. The old classics playing while you read your book, thinking bou how good life is.... service is defintely attentive and the food is very creatively done. I had the hash potatoes for breakfast and found it very satisfying. But the focus being the coffee for me, it didnt disappoint. Using the Harvest blend from Five Senses, it is brewed very well.. also on offer was their filter from guest roasters who I forget. But all in all, I'd visit this joint just regain my peace and tranquil from the daily grind of life.
Cosy local. I've visited here several times and am always greeted warmly, I've had food twice ,basic fare but well done. The coffee is always good- and I am fussy. Will keep coming to this cosy local cafe.
Fantastic new cafe. Been here a few times and can say that the food is amazing and the coffee is consistently great. An excellent addition to the neighbourhood and Union Road atmosphere.
Friendly staff and fast service. Food is ok but could be presented much better. My son had the kids banana and nutella pancakes and there was way too much nutella and he could not eat it. We will go back for the service and coffee.
Coffee!!. These guys love their coffee. I have seen it get pretty busy, so waited for a more quiet time to drop in. Had a great chat to the owner/manager I think about starting out and having passion about what you do. Coffee was fantastic, will be back.

I visit Union Rd regularly, normally frequenting one of the more established cafes, walking past Grandpa Joe to get there. After reading the ‘LoveLocal’ review I wondered to myself, how can such a terrible, over priced cafe be so busy? Today i went in to find out. I started with a single origin (Five Senses) short mac that was all lively bright flavours up front with a clean, smooth finish. Following this I had the chicken piadina and a latte. The piadina was a perfect mix of soft flat bread, chunks of chicken, avo, feta and sun dried toms with a wee bit of rocket. A very decent size for a small $9.5. The latte was excellent, smooth and subtle with great art. Altogether 2xcoffee and fab lunch for only $17ish, awesome. To top it all off this place knows the meaning of service, not a self indulgent or arrogant person in sight! Just good old fashioned service. Definitely my new local.
