We were really early for our dinner date nearby and ducked into this corner pub for a quick snifter. The public bar was the only part of the pub that was open. Imminent renovation I’d guess given the pub’s huge and in a prime corner position.
One riesling, one shiraz was the plan. Complex stuff. Who wants to be a millionaire was on the bar TV. The world’s most beautiful woman (WMBW) is a Chatty Cathy and she started to chat at length to the barman and regulars about her less than glittering game show career. One show, no cash or consumer durables. It made for good conversation especially as a pleasant nearby fellow barfly had bombed too.
The barman was a lovely bloke and good enough to offer the WMBW a free wine as it’s her birthday tomorrow. Two wines instead of one made for a lovely start to our dinner with our friends. The Ascot Vale Hotel reminded us of a friendly country pub. Nice people. We’d come back any time.
Good pub food for quite cheap! Will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu and enjoy live music. Good selection of beers and friendly staff.
I'll admit that we didn't eat here. HOWEVER Mr Choosy says it is, without doubt, THE BEST GUINNESS in Melbourne. Cheap beer, very friendly landlord and barman.
Minus points for shared bathrooms though.
A nice surprise, considering we've lived across the road for years and never been here. Parma was great for $15. The steaks looked awesome for $12! Great spot

GOOD AVERAGE PUB FARE BUT FABULOUS LIVE BAND...!!!
Have been here twice now, in the last few months...
The first time, a Sat night, we heard live music, so went in, had a few drinks and shared a couple of items from the snacks menu - mini spring rolls and chicken wings - spring rolls were fresh and crisp with a nice little dipping sauce, the chicken wings, hot and spicy...both around $7.50 each...all good...!!!
This next time, a group of us decided to book a table..again a Sat night, again a live band...
It was busy...don't think staff were expecting a crowd...am sure they weren't expecting a crowd, cos the full dining room was definitely too much for them to handle.. Hey, it's okay - they just got to learn.. Anyway it took a long while to get our mains...a very long while...nonetheless when they came - Pasta Carbonara was generous and tasty, Fish Chips & Salad was just what the 'doc had ordered', Chicken Parma's were well cooked, juicy and the meat was thicker than the crumb, Salt & Pepper Squid was the real thing...all good... eventually... finally... Oh, and they were all around the $15 mark..which was pretty okay.. No complaints there..!!
What was fantastic was the band - 4 hours of live loud 70's and 80's Aussie Rock - From Australian Crawl to The Angels to AC/DC - Crowd loved it - We loved it... Fabulous band - 'No Soup For You'... A new group, apparently - Four 50's something life-hardened Rock Angels... With one mean playing bass guitarist and another harmonica virtuoso.. These guys are all passion... Well worth a look in and well worth the long wait on those mains...
Look, when these guys are playing, we will all definitely be there - to eat, drink...and have a really memorable night....!!!

Pleasant surprise! :D. We ( group of 5) ate last Thursday. The menu had all the usual favourites on it and ordering was simple and friendly. Our meals came out well presented and the ingredients were fresh and tasty. All of us were impressed with our choices- Crisply battered fish and chips with salad x 2, Angus Beef burger, salad and chips, Pita bread, skewered lamb, salad and chips x 2, Prawn and Vegie Penne..all leaving our plates clean. Of course, the wine and creamy Guinness washed it down well. :) Definitely will go back for more. Must take photos next time though!
Greatest meal ever. We had the chilly mussels, calamari and saganaki grilled cheese as entrees. For mains we had Fish and chips and pork belly, it was all fantastic. Also we had great service, and the beer was also good. Highly recommend
This pub has really outshone itself, the place looks good, was full but not crowded, very very good wait staff and bar service, and guess what they were consistent on the night- and there was no shortage of them on shift, calm, no stress, and this was on a. Friday night as well. Food really was on par with the service standards- good and timing great.Hard to beat the quality price value here . All entree servings were good portions and very well cooked and fresh. The sides and salads for the steaks were tasty and dressed and seasoned well.The kitchen there knows how to cook decent thick and well rested steaks.hard too find a reason not go back. Thanks for a really nice end to the week, and super good night out.
We’re locals who choose to go to this amazing hotel at least once a week for steak night, if not twice a week as we’re business owners, extremely short on time and the incredible service and experience headed up by Nick and his awesome team is old fashioned customer service like nothing else! Nothing is too much trouble, even in times when they’re struggling with staffing issues like every other hospitality business, they provide amazing customer service and delicious food! Thank you Nick and the amazing Ascot Vale Hotel Team! We treasure your group and love coming for dinner each week!

Fantastic steak night on a Tuesday. The place was fully booked and with good reason. The service was friendly and the food quality was superb. A great little local!
A hidden gem in the mid city suburbs, friendly locals champion publican. Spacious & relaxed, no noisey pokies, great meals & week night specials. Thurs night cheap cold pots and Marley’s Premium Meat Raffle is the best. AV “Here’s Luck” ❤️👍
Nice meal and friendly staff and good choice of beer on tap. **an extremely helpful security guy with cleaning our table etc. Very impressed!
Great location, and has everything you want in a pub. Lots of different spaces, around three different vegan options and a good selection of drinks. Have and will go back!
