Mr Union is an Ascot Vale cafe and restaurant that’s all about simple food done well, with a mixture of Melbourne favourites and dishes influenced by owner-chef Gabor Pelikan’s Hungarian heritage. Housed in what was modern bistro Union Food & Wine, the former bank building feels a bit like a cozy home.
The interiors have been recently renovated to create a warm and welcoming dining area. With bright paintings and light filled spaces, Mr Union is a lovely place to dine. They are open thoughout the day serving up awesome breakfast, dinner and all the meals you need in between. Their brunch options cover all the usual essentials like the eggs benny and scrambled eggs, but all with a special unique twist in flavor. Definitely something that I would come back to try out.
Situated in Ascot Vale on Union Rd, hence the name, Mr Union is a cafe that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with some menu items containing Hungarian influences due to the chef’s background. I dropped by here as I won the instagram competition for a complimentary meal worth $50, I ended up ordering over the limit as I couldn’t decide just on 2 dishes. We arrived pretty late maybe with a bit over an hour of the kitchen closing, but the staff did not rush us at all and we still received good service.
Excellent coffee, great breakfast without a fancy pants over the top menu. Hungarian dumplings are Devine. My new local regular spot beats other breakfast spots on quality hands down
Delicious food, GF vegan option - staff were accommodating. Tried a tumeric latte for the first time, it was really good. Would go back if there were more GF and vegan options. Nice venue.

The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. We really enjoyed having brunch here, the coffee was great. Can't wait to come back.
Meal sizes are plentiful and at very reasonable prices. We very happily ate their extremely tasty, well presented scrumptious dishes titled 'Baked Eggs' and 'Our Egg Bene' These meals instantly took us to another world and we felt we were eating in a bustling street in Europe! Later we found out that most dishes have a Hungarian history to them. A must try if you would like to be instantly teleported!
The simplicity & elegance of their breakfast menu makes this place a standout from the crowd in terms of breakfast eateries. My brunch of a corned beef toastie was perfectly balanced, with the right amount of filling on good quality bread. Washed down with a crisp , tangy prosecco made this a simple but perfect meal. Service was warm but not intruding & look forward to trying their other dishes.

"This looks too nice to be a pub," remarked my husband as we stepped inside. It was very nice inside and it looked like they did proper coffees too judging by the set up they had on their on-trend stone bench tops. I was still scanning the place when I heard a voice ask, "Can I start you with some sparkling or tap water?" Service was prompt (although we were one of only 4 tables that day).
I didn't expect the coffees to be good here but they were exceptional. They had the perfect coffee to milk ratio, something which my husband made a point of. He was feeling very learned in this field after he did a barista class not too long ago. 5/5
He ordered a pork belly burger which came on a plate without too much fanfare. It was very juicy and I could see the mayo dripping off with every bite. It was nice and relatively light in comparison to the monster meal I ordered. 4/5
I had a steak sandwich because, well, I was hungry and I thought I could eat a whole cow by this point. But why I ordered the steak sandwich was not so much the sandwich itself but because it came with onion rings. I had a craving for onion rings that day and these were very well done. Perfectly seasoned and piping hot too. I enjoyed the steak sandwich but it was a bit too greasy for me. I mean, it really was more like a steak toastie which meant it was buttered on the outside and buttered on the inside ... all very tasty but also so very greasy. I still rate it highly. 4/5
Overall our experience here was very pleasant. Everything from the food to the coffee to the service was very well done. I would definitely come here again.

Had a dinner here a while back on a Friday night, everything was enjoyable enough. Probably more suitable for a later booking as for a while we were the only ones there eating which was a little bit awkward. Filled up after 7:30pm
Awesome, worth they hype and many great reviews. Generous servings and the food is delicious with rich flavours that are well matched. A shining beacon in a sea of shit venues in the north.
This great cafe (restaurant) is always solid! Have not had a bad meal here. Great service and warm ambience. Breakfast is extremely great value for money. Would recommend without doubt.
Great place, and the only more upmarket dinner option on Union Rd. Menu is limited but everything is well executed. Lovely service. You do wait a while for food but I think that's because the kitchen pay such close attention to every dish. Also great for a relaxed but refined breakfast or lunch.

The food quality is beyond immagination. Desserts are out of this world. Go there, enjoy the lovely premises and the nice service, drink some carefully selected wines. But whatever you do, you-must-have-dessert!
Food was delicious, not so much the service. With 4 dishes on the menu my wife asked if she could change the peas on a dish. (A weird phobia) seemed like a chore so ordered another dish.
Beer was cleared before finished still an inch left in the bottle?
Once again food was delicious and enough choice for everyone.
Absolutely amazing food!
We chose to come here for lunch to celebrate a special occasion, but preferred a more substantial menu than Union Food & Wine's typical lunch menu. The head chef, Stuart, was extremely accommodating, and offered to instead create a special menu for us (based on their dinner menu). 3 absolutely amazing courses for only $70, and amazing service from the waitresses.
Can't recommend this place highly enough!
Favourite meals from all the guests were the kingfish ceviche, the pork belly, and the snapper.
This place is fantastic for breakfast. I go here at least once every fortnight and am yet to be disappointed by the coffee, food or wait staff. The highlights are the pancakes and the baked eggs, but that's only if I had to make a choice!
Absolutely love this place. Firstly I have only tried the breakfast menu and must say that each and every menu item I've tried is top notch. Having only tried vegetarian options I can't speak for the carnivorous options but everything I've trotted here is somewhat unique, well presented, reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. On top the double espressos ate also with a men@tion. This place has become my new regular breakfast spot and can't recommend highly enough. Great job guys and gals!!!

I usually come here for a lazy weekend brunch, and the dining environment is relaxing and very suitable for a long lazy brunch or lunch.
have never tried the dinner options, but the brunch options here have never disappointed me.
will have to make time to come back for some dinner when I am next in the area.
Union Food and Wine is in Ascot Vale right outside of a tram line. Here they have been featured in the Entertainment book in the fine dining section. You can buy this book off Meld Magazine for $65. The place is open and inviting and here you can relax by the fire with a good book or paper. The staff are friendly and I loved the waitress with the glasses- she was attentive and friendly to all her staff. She also loved drinking wine.

I can't fault the food. Breakfast was delicious. The addition of ice to my apple juice was initially strange, but as the weather got hotter, I appreciated it. I love the decor, very fresh, relaxed, and clean. The service was friendly but not overbearing. I really want to return here for dinner!
I don't usually like to go to dinner on Fridays given my restricted diet (shout out to my Southeast Asian friends of the Hindu persuasion). Thankfully this lovely restaurant had a lovely offering in both the entree and main section that tickled my fancy. This is the second time we've been here and we love the fact that although they have a small menu, everything they offer tastes amazing. This is a local gem - for breakfast have something that includes the bbq bacon as it's delicious. All of the toasties are favourites and the specials usually have something to tempt
Fantastic local restaurant, cannot fault it. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner at Union Food since they opened two years and always leave a very happy person after having wonderful food. Stuart McVeigh is a brilliant chef who cooks with great local produce and his menu always follows the seasons. Hard to pick a favourite amongst all the great dishes I have had there but our go to favourites for breakfast are the BBQ bacon toastie, turkish baked eggs, bircher muesli, orange pancakes with whipped ricotta, the porridge and anything on the specials board. Some great breakfast specials have been the duck confit hash and the avocado dukkah eggs. Some dinner favourites lately have been the charcuterie plate, charcoal grilled Rannoch farm quail, slow cooked wagyu brisket and roast hapuka. Favourite desserts have been the tapioca, the quince clafoutis and soft chocolate with poached pear and salted caramel. Amazing food, lucky to have Union Food as my local!
If you are after a heart breakfast you may find the portion sizing a bit small but the people behind the menu seriously know their stuff. You will find most of the new cafe staples with interesting and unique twists. Coffee is above your standard fare and service has always been friendly.
Great place for a brunch or lunch. I've been here a few times and it's always very nice. Their cappuccinos come with real grated chocolate on top which is a favourite. I highly recommend their toasted sandwiches, but you can't go wrong with their other dishes as well.
Now this is a winner. Fresh, well executed and modern. The vibe can be a little sterile at times with it being very open, bright and airy but the company and food should help that out. Stuart and his team really have inspired menus and work hard to make this place sing a song of great value, diversity and a lot of flavor. Make sure you add it to your must dine in list.
Delicious!. Dined here last night for the first time. Had a lovely, delicate entree of salmon and beetroot, then literally the best gnocchi I have ever had. Light, fluffy and utterly delicious. Nice service too. We were very impressed and pleased to see a restaurant of this calibre appearing in Ascot Vale. The decor has an open, light, Scandinavian feel. Also has a short but well balanced wine list. Dinner for two cost $90.
Had a beautiful degustation lunch today with friends which I couldn't fault anything with. It was a perfectly balanced meal and a very reasonable price. Ascot Vale residents are very lucky to have such a high quality restaurant in their midst. I'll definitely be back for more.
We went there for dinner on a Friday evening. The food was excellent! We had the chicken and gnocchi and both were delicious. Then into the deserts, trifle and poached pair, and the bar was lifted again. We will definitely be going back.
Local Winner. Stuart and the team here are doing great things, food is awesome, venue a little cold, but for what you pay for its a cracker.
Usually stop in here to grab a coffe, which is very good. We also had a meal the other day which was lovely.
Had the bacon, egg, gruyere and chilli jam toastie, which was sensational and just right for a Saturday morning. Coffee was decent too, as was the quick service . Will be back to try dinner.

Delightful night. We had a wonderful saturday evening at union food and wine: delightful wait staff, excellent, generous food, interesting wine in a very pleasant space. Recommended without reservation -- and our two slightly fussy teenage boys loved it too: sophisticated without being too challenging.
Have been a few times to Union food & Wine now. Always great. Food is devine and service comes with a smile. Lovely relaxed atmosphere for a nice meal. Well done guys.

A Welcome Addition to Ascot Vale. After previous dining experiences at No. 35 (in the Sofitel) and the Botanical, I was excited to hear that Stuart McVeigh had decided to start his own venture right on my doorstep... Fine dining in Union Rd - yay!
I strolled in without a booking at about 8pm on a Saturday night and was fortunate to score a table for two. Menus were presented, pleasantries exchanged and drinks were ordered.
I wasn't overly hungry, so I ordered a salad for both entree and main (sad, I know!), whilst my companion ordered pork belly entree and lamb main. Whilst we were waiting for our food to be served (which, admittedly was quite a while) I had a chance to perve on the neighbouring tables and was very pleased with what I saw - immaculately presented plates that were a feast for the eyes.
When the food eventually did arrive, they proved to be a feast for the other senses also. My salads were refreshing, light and satisfying while my companions carnivorous meals were cooked to perfection - crisp and perfectly rendered pork belly, and juicy, tender lamb.... Yummo!
Whilst the service was exceptionally friendly, it probably wasn't as attentive as I would have like - as mentioned, the food took some time to arrive and we had to signal the staff on more than one occasion to order more drinks. Perhaps it was an unusually busy Saturday night? Either way, it deterred us from ordering desserts - we didn't want to wait!
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and look forward to returning and trying the tasting menu.... Perhaps mid week next time..
Fantastic!. We went to Union Food & Wine last saturday night. Everything was fantasic. Amazing food and great service. I am so glad that this place has opened in Ascot Vale and I can't wait to go back.
NICE FOOD. We both enjoyed our dinner at Union Food & Wine, the service was good,wine list had some great choices and the food was impressive.The only downer was the wait between courses but when you have good conversation it passes quickly.The atmosphere in the dining room is nice and relaxed but can get a little noisy once the room starts to fill up with customers.
Tasty brekky. Breakfasted here recently with the misssus and tried the ginger hotcakes and the big breakfast. Big thumbs up for both, everything was perfectly cooked and very tasty (great pork and fennel sausage served as part of the big brekky!). My only slight complaint is that it would have been nice if the hotcakes had come a with just a little more of the delicious ricotta topping. Oh, and the big breakfast would be much easier to eat if served in a regular plate rather than in a cramped ceramic vessel, which leaves no room to maneuver.
Latte and chai latte were both of a good standard.
Pricing is reasonable and the service was friendly.
Will definitely be back!

Absolutely amazing from entree to dessert. Great restaurant atmosphere, beautiful service, and the food was divine. Delicious, flavourful, innovative cuisine. Could not fault this place. The toilets were even lovely to visit!! 5 stars.
Went here for lunch with work and was blown away by the taste and quality of the food. We were a little bit squashed on the table given for 9, but that was just a minor thing. The service of ordering drinks was slow and a bit unattentive but it was busy.
Stuart and his chefs are just magic, the food was Devine and nap lithely faultless. I think out boss had pre-ordered for us and we had a selection of meats, pâté, terrine, hummus, bread, pickles and a mince dish - I could quote happily have finished there, but then we had need with a reduction sauce and the best chips ever with aioli. Unfortunately I could not fit in a desert but have been told they are also amazing.
I am looking forward to going again and it cannot be soon enough!!!
Beautiful food- lovely venue. We visited this restaurant for lunch and we were not disappointed. The food was superb! I don't usually order fish but the wild barramundi was absolutely delicious, as was the duck that my partner had. The chips with aioli were also lovely. We were served by a lovely, friendly and very efficient waitress. We were very impressed and can't wait to return again. The food here is the best in the area and easily surpasses the rubbish fare at other local places such as the Lakehouse. Highly recommended!
Perfect Father's Day lunch. Party of six plus my 10 month old. We were attended to immediately by a lovely French waitress, who kept up an impeccable level of service throughout our 2 hour lunch. I had the onion tart for starter, delicious. The rest of the meal (barramundi followed by soft chocolate w/ salt caramel) was of a similar standard. The rest of my party were equally pleased with their choices. I will definitely be trying the gnocchi next time, it looked deliciously cheesy. I am also looking forward to trying the breakfast menu, there are more than a few tasty offerings deserving of my attention.

Yep, it's good, book it now. A last minute booking, where will we eat ? Someone said there is anew restaurant in union road maybe we could get in there ? We did, a party of four, we all had fantastic food, excellent flavours and beautifully cooked. This is going to be a regular on our list, and it's walking distance from home. I suspect we'll need to book in advance in future.

One of Moonee Valleys finest restaurants. My wife and I both had the beef cheek ravioli for entree which was delightful, then a short time later came out our mains, we both had the Barramundi which was cooked to perfection, the skin was crispy and the mushroom sauce that was on the plate was a compliment to the while dish. We managed to fit in a walnut cake with ice cream, it was a lovely way to finish a perfect meal off. We will definitely be coming back on a regular basis, this place deserves a Chefs Hat!!! Stuart McVeigh has created a little masterpiece here. A simple menu with fewer options of simple ingredients done exquisitely. A superb evening which shall be repeated many times.
Wow! Just wow! Even though they have just opened, I've been there twice for breakfast and once for dinner. The corned beef creamed leek toastie was genius. The dinner menu is small but what I ate was nearly as good as it gets. This guy can cook. I mean really cook. And even if it wasn't my local, I would be travelling across town for this sort of food. Welcome to the hood and please don't ever go.

Book it in.... Had the honour of been one of the first lucky people to dine at this new restaurant on Union road. On entering the warm and beautifully lit dining room, we were immediately greeted by friendly and inviting staff who showed us to our table and subsequently adhered to our every need through out the night.
The entrees, mains and deserts served were of a very high quality,visually appealing and a sensory enjoyment, praised by everyone in our group.
Looking forward to further culinary delights.
Visited yesterday for breakfast. Straight away we were greeted with warm smiles and seated to our table. Following the great service the coffee was great, my Big Breakfast meal- Pork sausage, poached eggs, home made baked beans, tomato, mushrooms, bacon and toast was delicious. The mushrooms were AMAZING! The whole meal was a beautiful start to the day. I'm looking forward to the Ravalli next week :-) Highly recommend :-)

My bro and sister-in-law (SIL) are in Melbourne this week and wanted to take me for a belated birthday dinner. I immediately booked a tablet at Union Food & Wine - I had read a foodie column about it a few months ago and have been dying to try it out ever since. Bro and I both went with duck. To be fair, when there is duck on the menu I stop looking. It is the only time I can make a swift dining decision and this did not disappoint.
Amazing Hungarian dumplings, wonderful Umami burger, friendly staff and gorgeous atmosphere. What else do you need? :) We will definitely go back, it was love at first sight. Good luck guys!
We attended a private function in the upstairs room. The food and service were excellent. Everyone enjoyed the evening immensely with all dishes being rated very highly.

The place is nice, but when busy the place can be an echo chamber of noise. Always had good food, and decent coffee (it is a bit on the stronger side). They are bit pricey though.
Food was great. I really recommend the pork hock. Our waiter was fantastic. What a lovely relaxing place to have a quiet dinner. I will be back again soon.
