There’s always a food queue outside the restaurant during peak hours. The menu is broad & extensive has got something for everyone. 🙂 They have a concept store right next to it where you can purchase freshly made items such as handmade dumplings, pastries & snacks for takeaway. My favourite choice is their Zongzi. (Sticky rice dumpling)
They have many authentic Shanghainese dishes, from appetizers, mains to desserts. The classic Xiao Long Bao was plumped & juicy but the skin was a tad thick. Slow Braised Pork Belly with Sweetened Soy Sauce served in a traditional claypot. The pork belly was cut in cubes and was melt in your mouth served in a sticky caramel sauce. 😋
Their Shanghai Lion’s head Meatballs were not as authentic as I had in Shanghai. The oversized pork meatballs were dense and I couldn’t really taste any crabmeat in them. 😗
I loveee their dumplings! Some of the greatest in Sydney. I would highly recommend their pan fried pork buns and prawn wontons. They are full of so much flavour and are of great value. The menu is quite extensive so you are sure to find something that you love. The only negative thing about this place is it does get quite busy (understandable) and some of the tables are quite close together. Perfect for those dumpling cravings, but also amazing Chinese food!

If you’re looking for genuine, authentic Chinese dishes which are large in portion and filled with flavour - this is the place to go. We ordered a noodle dish, a wonton soup and xiao long bao. This place is very reasonably priced for what you get.
I have been eyeing this place out for a while and it did not disappoint!
The restaurant opened at 11am and there was already a queue. The food was delicious & served quite fast. I really enjoyed my braised beef noodle soup, the meat was soft and melted in my mouth.
The dumplings were also yummy! I also recommend the lychee green tea.

I’m always hearing about this place and finally got a chance to check it out. Of the restaurant that line Liverpool st, New Shanghai is definitely one of the nicer ones in terms of decor and interior. The food is a bit hit and miss, I loved the pan fried buns ($12), the minced meat noodles had a good flavour but not enough sauce and a tad bit plain ($12), xo pipis were very flavourful and quite generous in serving size ($20) and the marinated seaweed salad was refreshing ($6). All in all, not super impressed but a good decent meal.
Dinner number 2: chinese brocolli ($13.90), crispy skin chicken ($19.80), pan fried pork and chive dumplings ($13), fried sweet and sour barramundi ($40) and salted egg yolk calamari ($23). The wait this time was 40min + always long lines, everything I had was good and not too salty so suited my families palates. The barramundi was soo yummy, but didn’t like the sauce much, prefer the vietnamese sweet chilli ginger garlic concoction. Anyway, good place for chinese but I’m sure most places around are just as decent.
I thought the restaurant would be very busy at around 12pm on a Saturday afternoon. However, surprising we got a table of six very quickly, the service was friendly and attentive. The menu had a variety of dishes. Larger portions than some restaurants I have been to. Excellent food 😊Would highly recommend!
Would definitely say this would be the place for a nice family dinner if you are craving for dumplings! Another dish that is recommended while you’re there is also the Salted eggs Fried Prawns!!!!! But just to warn you, just be aware that there is long queue before entering the restaurant as it gets quite packed between 6pm to 8pm! But beside that, food was great! Lovely atmosphere!
This place is nothing short of a dumpling heaven and serves probably one of the best dumplings I have ever had. They have multiple locations across Sydney and we visited the Ashfield one. It has an extensive menu of Chinese food on offer.
One of my favourite Chinese restaurants, especially the dumplings. Personally believe the XLBs are one of the best I’ve tried across different restaurants. Only downside is the super long line every day of the week, from afternoon to night.
Loved loved loved the soup dumplings and chive pancake - it’s hard to go wrong and a staple at all Shanghainese restaurants!! The steamed buns with stir fried beef was quite disappointing. The buns weren’t warmed and the beef was quite chewy. The cold noodles with braised beef was an interesting dish but personally not a fan. The noodles were quite dense in the sesame/peanut butter tasting sauce. Would love to visit again to try the pan fried pork buns!
Tasty food for a good price. As a vegetarian choice of dumplings was limited to one option, but the salt and pepper fried mushrooms were amazing! Service was basic but efficient, no wait time
This is exactly what the smoke fish and small steam pork bun should taste like! Absolutely correct flavours as I experienced in Southern China. Also the stir fried rice cake tastes correct and tasty. Noodles and wonton are delicious as well. Price is decent or even a bit low comparing with the food quality. Strongly recommended!
Quick lunch at New Shanghai in Ashfield. We got pork wontons in a chili, sesame and peanut sauce. The peanut butter made the sauce very creamy. It was interesting.
We also got king brown mushrooms in salt and pepper seasoning. It was really delicious. The bouncy texture of the mushroom was really nice.
Amazing dumplings and extensive menu with different dishes but the dumplings are definitely outstanding. Nice flavours, good preparation, cheap and big dishes. The bad thing is the restaurant is very demanded so there is a long queue for waiting. I was waiting 30 minutes, you cannot make booking from Fri to Sun. Anyway it worth. BYO.

After hearing my friends rave about New Shanghai, I had to visit to check out their range of dumplings! We visited on a busy Saturday night and waited just under 1 hour to be seated.
I highly recommend trying their signature dumplings! I loved the Pot Sticker Pan Fried Pork Dumplings, the filling and soup inside was so good!
The beef stir fry with steamed buns was pretty good too.
This is a great restaurant to visit in groups because the proportions are large and great for sharing to try other dishes.
I have no idea how I haven’t blogged about New Shanghai in Ashfield yet. For a long period, this was my go-to dumpling spot, and a group of us from Surry Hills and Redfern would hop on the train to Ashfield to get our fix. It also has some comical memories, as even the huge cockroach crawling up the wall next to us one night, nor a period where they were named and shamed for bad sanitation, could keep us away. We always ordered the same things and could never believe how cheap the meal turned out to be.

This has got to be one of my favourite Chinese restaurants to date. My partner and I usually go there for the fried rice with meat and veggies and noodles. Although we do not eat any of the pork dishes, everything else is amazing. There was the one time we ordered the eel noodles which weren't to our liking but overall, always go back. Affordable and quick service.
I keep coming back to New Shanghai, Ashfield for their amazing vegetable steamed dumplings. Their other dishes are excellent too, such as the braised tofu lunch special.

There’s a reason New Shanghai has a long line full of hungry people waiting for a table; it’s awesome.
We are addicted their pan fried pork buns, prawn dumplings (the peanut and chilli oil over the top are incredible) and just about anything they serve! Good authentic cuisine.
We miss the bean thread noodles with shredded pork though! No longer on the menu.
Omg! We love this place, came here for our dumpling fix and was not disappointed. At 2pm there was still a line waiting to get a table but we only had to wait 10mins
Always delicious. I especially love the dumplings and rice cakes. The service is good too! I have found the prices to be quite reasonable. There is even a lunch special!
Found a new local favorite place to eat tonight. I was craving dumplings so bad and New Shanghai hit the spot. Pork cabbage steamed dumplings are so so good and the pan fried pork buns are amazing. Really enjoyed all the food , the ice drinks were too sweet but I guess ok on a hot day. The queue was a 35 minute wait but honestly it was worth it. Definitely a place to try if u love Chinese food and in particular dumplings . I also loved the window looking in to the staff making the dumplings and other assorted Chinese dishes.
Prices are good and service also.

Amidst all the shanghai restaurants in Ashfield, this one has quite a nice interior with tasty food. They have some lunch specials for under $10 which is a pretty good deal. On a quiet weekday lunch, we ordered the classic XLBs, potstickers, noodles and rice cakes. All was really yummy, though I've got to say I've been to places with more soup inside the XLBs... but tasty nonetheless ! Prices aren't out of the ordinary either though there are cheaper and equally good restaurants out there. But I guess you pay for the cleaner space :P
Fav go-to place for dumplings, and I only love the Ashfield one (not a fan of the others). Value for money and service is great, the pot stickers, pan fried and xlbs are all super juicy and delicious.
Food is delicious and affordable. The wait is always long so make sure you go extra early or later to avoid getting hangry. The service is awful and lacks major improvement.
We came here on a public holiday. The place was rather busy. The restaurant also had a $2 per person surcharge, which I found wasn't too bad. This was my first time at this branch, however, I have had many experiences at New Shanghai in Brisbane. The quality was equally as good. We had ordered the xiao long bao, crispy steamed pork buns, meat & seafood crispy noodle, and salty egg tofu. My favourite dish would have to be the xiao long bao. The soupy broth inside the dumplings was so f#ken tasty. I definitely recommend this place! (Sorry I don't have a photo of the dumplings or bao - we were too hungry to wait!)
The pan fried dumpling is a must when you come here. Would just recommend going before seven on weekdays and weekends as it gets very busy during dinner hours.
Early days of my blogging, I wrote about New Shanghai in Chatswood. To say the least, the experience was not memorable. We went past New Shanghai Ashfield a few times and it is usually extremely busy with people lining up outside the restaurant at dinner time. As per the other New Shanghai restaurants, they put a slightly premium price compared to the other Chinese restaurants around the area.
Came here for dinner on a Friday night with hubby and the kids. Food was great, came out quickly despite the restaurant being packed. Noodles and dumplings were a hit with the kids. Warm friendly staff. Come early or there is a wait after 6.30pm!
In Short: New Shanghai is ironically one of the original and best Shanghai inspired restaurants in Ashfield where dumplings rule supreme, with a nice variety of rice and noodle dishes to complement. Our tip: Dine early and avoid the lunch rush and especially long queues from 6:30pm onwards for dinner.
New Shanghai is an extremely popular restaurant serving modern Shanghai cusine, hence the name. With multiple restaurants around Sydney including Chatswood, the city and Ashfield. We visited the Ashfield location on a busy Friday night, with people queuing to get their dumpling and bun fix. Once inside, the restaurant had a good atmosphere full of diners enjoying their meals. The decor set up to reflect a Shanghai dining experience, with a couple of rooms with plenty of seating. The service is efficient to ensure the wait for a table is not too long.
I really love dumplings and buns. And in this restaurant you have a massive choice of flavours with meat or vegetarian. Their menu is really long. They have all the Chinese food you could think about.
One of the first time i couldnt finish all the dumplings I ordered as they were really filling. But so tasty too. You cant go wrong with this place. I tried 6 dishes and all of them were good. It is also quite cheap so no reason to not treat yourself there.Good news there is another one in the CBD. I would advice the veggie dumplings.So many flavours in each bites.
This Chinese chain of restaurant is just amazing. I have been to the CBD one and in Ashfield too. It can be quite busy but the service is really fast so finally you don’t wait so long to have a sit and get food.
I love Chinese food. New Shanghai at Ashfield is vert good. This restaurant is always crowded, friendly staffs and very very delicious food. One more reason makes me love this reastaurant is that the price is very affordable
You can never go wrong with any of the dumplings here. I recommend ordering from the New Shanghai Specials and yakult green tea. The menu is extensive and every dish comes out hot and fresh. However, the stir fried flat noodles lacked in flavour so I wouldn't get this next time. Pot Stickers here are much better than the ones at Taste of Shanghai as it's more crispy and less starchy. Prices are also a little cheaper than other dumpling restaurants
Arrived at New Shanghai at around 6pm on a Saturday and we were lucky we did because after that it got so busy, people were waiting outside! My friends shared the duck and I had a noodles dish. We also ordered the steamed pork dumplings. Everything was delicious - my noodles could have used with a bit more sauce but otherwise great!

6:15pm… that’s about the latest time you can rock up to New Shanghai on a Wednesday night and get a table straight away.
We had a bit of a midweek feast here – shallot pancakes, xiao long bao (of course), pan fried pork buns, steamed pork and chive dumplings, fried rice, eggplant hot pot, and stir fried beans. All the dishes were delish, served steaming hot (or maybe it just felt that way due to it being winter outside), and fresh. If I had to pick my favourite dish of the night, it had to be the pan fried pork buns. Soft and fluffy on the top, crispy on the bottom. A sweet bao wrapped around a savoury pork filling with a bit of soup (xiao long bao, you are not alone in that)… that is comfort food. The unexpected dish of the night though was the eggplant because I don’t think I’ve ever eaten eggplant like that. Coated in a bit of flour, fried, then placed in a hotpot with delicious sauce… the fry before the hotpot had produced a great texture with a bit of chewiness on the outside before hitting the soft melt-in-your-mouth eggplant inside. One could almost be forgiven for thinking it tasted meaty.

We came here for lunch mid week. I really couldn't fault the food, the satay chicken was perfect, and the assortment of dumplings were delicious. I have to say though I really disliked the ambience. It was loud, cramped, the seats were uncomfortable, and the restaurant was freezing. Having said that, the food was great, maybe get it to go.
The dumplings are a must at this place! Service was quick and food was fresh. Would definitely recommend if you have time to wait for a table.
Overall I preferred this restaurant to the Taste of Shanghai as it was cheaper and a little more succulent and delicious. I ordered xiao long bao ($9) and pan fried pork buns ($12.5). The dumplings were juicy and satisfying.
The loud and bustling noises inside this small restaurant really does tell you how popular the dumplings here are. I love coming here for their soup filled dumplings, because they are delicious, and some good ol' noodles too. I do find the overall packed nature to be off-putting, because it can become really cramped, but the food and drinks here are really great. In particular I loved their iced lychee drink served in a mason jar! The chef's special dumplings (pick any one of them) are pretty spectacular too!
My favourite place to go! I always come here with my family & the food is fantastic. I'd recommend the Panfried Pork Buns & Xiao Long Bao but everything there is amazing! Definitely recommend

Made a last minute decision to try New Shanghai on Saturday night. They don't take bookings, so when we arrived we had to wait roughly 15 minutes outside which was annoying, but it was worth the wait! The dumplings were excellent; soft, moist and packed full of flavour. They were priced well, and were made on the spot. The wait staff needed to show a bit of enthusiasm... one in particular needed to smile! And the slow braised pork belly had a delicious flavor, but I believe wasn't cooked long enough as it was chewy. Overall, the dumplings were excellent - if ever in ashfield, try this spot!
Located in the heart of Ashfield, came here on a busy Sunday night, however the wait wasn't long. We ordered their signature Pork Xiao long bao which was simply amazing, these bad boys are filled with flavoursome soup that bursts into your mouth at first bite. We also got the stir fried noodles which was amazing (add chilli for a good hit) and the prawn wonton with chilli oil, which was only OK as the wonton skin was abit tough. Staff were very attentive and overall experience was great! Highly recommend
I love soup dumplings (who doesn't) but I am very particular with my dumplings. There are only two chains in Sydney that are close to meet my standard - one is Taste of Shanghai and the other one is New Shanghai.
My loyalty to Taste of Shanghai is challenged ever since the opening of New Shanghai on the same road in Ashfield. The menu is extensive, the service is more professional, the decor is a bit more pleasant. The dumplings are, not as good as TOS, but not bad! We ordered both steamed and pan fried dumplings. The latter are not as juicy and slightly bland. The X.O Sauce clams are one of the largest I had and the sauce is simply divine.
To my surprise, the takeaway shop next door also sells a type of oven baked pastry that I have only seen and tried in Shanghai. They come in both sweet and savoury. It's such a delight to discover this popular street food in Sydney. You bet I will be back soon.
Big fan of new shanghai Chatswood and city but hasn't made it out to Ashfield yet. This place seems to work allot quicker than the others? Big crowds but wait time wasn't long..
over ordered as usual but managed to finish it all.. delicious friend soup pork buns - these are definitely the new shanghai speciality. I think their steamed dumplings are great but nothing compares to din tai fung in my opinion. Overall we loved it and will be back..
Not a huge pork eater but the pork soup dumplings were beautiful. The prawn wontons with peanut & chilli oil were to die for too. Left very satisfied & reasonably priced!

Went there with a friend for second course after shared HSP box at Metro One 200m from this place. We went there for dumplings. We ordered Xiaolongbao (Soup dumpling) and Pan Fried Pork and Chives Dumpling (apparently both are the recommended dishes). Xiaolongbao was exceptionally amazing with concentrated and rich soup inside, it was really addictive treat. Pan Fried Dumplings was pretty good, the filling is savoury and the skin is well fried, albeit a little too thick. Will come back to try other dishes.
We went on a rainy day but the restaurant was still so busy! Despite this, the service was very quick and efficient. We tried the steamed pork dumplings, pan fried pork buns, pan fried pork dumplings and the slow braised pork belly. Everything was so perfectly cooked with so much flavour and was very filling.
Definitely recommend New Shanghai if you're craving dumplings and some hearty Chinese food!
Best Chinese food i've had for a long time! Me and my family ordered 40 dumplings, crispy skin chicken, beef cashew nut, salt and pepper calamari, seasonal vege for mains and loved every dish! The XIAO LONG BAO here is no joke!! Had deep fried icecream and mango pudding for dessert, ask for no topping with the deep fried icecream though, its sweet enough.
Will be back for sure! Very impressed. Arrived at 5:30pm Saturday and still had to wait 30mins for table, very busy place but for good reason.

On a Thursday, we froze from the 20 minute queuing outside as they've got limited reserved tables and the rest for walk-ins. Once inside, you're then given a dizzingly exhaustive menu and a good deal of items are marked Signature which turns decision making into an ordeal. Thankfully you can't go wrong with any dishes, they're all great, creative and clever and best had with 4+ people to share as servings are large. The pan fried pork buns was my pick.

There are so many dumpling houses in Sydney & this strip of Ashfield is a competitive one. Yet New Shanghai has been one of the longer standing ones & for good reason. Always busy, the open kitchen is enclosed with glass windows for everyone to watch the skillful dumplings being made. These guys pump out so many of them a day so your dumplings are always fresh. The decor is modern & the place is buzzy with young and old. Dumplings are a must & I have been here many many many times and my always order dishes are the pan fried pork buns - a thicker bun encasing a soup dumpling. Although I always start with a few cold dishes first, such as the shredded kombu, garlic cucumber & jellyfish, as they really get your appetite revved up! The potstickers are also delicious with a golden crispy bottom. Love the pork & chive as well as the pork & cabbage steamed dumplings for the traditional types & the vegetarian dumpling is modern, generously stuffed & with texture added by carrots & vermicelli. The spicy wontons are also a highlight, whether by itself or in a soup or with a hot, steaming, hearty bowl of noodles. For more substantial dishes to fill you up in the end, go for the thick Shanghainese stir fried noodles or the stir fried rice cakes. I enjoyed the yangzhou fried rice also. Even though you might be full from all the delicious dumplings, dont forget the delectable sweets like the steamed pumpkin dumpling with red bean or the crispy sticky rice dumpling with red bean. Get a sweet Asian milk tea to top off the whole Asian experience!
Be prepared to wait for a seat here. Always a long queue. If you love dumplings, this is the place for you. Good dumplings, good Shanghai food. Service is hit & miss.
If the crowds and queues are anything to go by, New Shanghai is the most popular Chinese restaurant along this strip of Liverpool Road populated with Chinese restaurants with every variation of Shanghai in its name (Shanghai Night, New Shanghai Night, Shanghai Dumpling... You get the the idea!)
Watch the chefs deftly prepare each individual dumpling behind the glass in the showcase kitchen, and enjoy xiao long bao and pan fried dumplings.

I'm a massive dumpling fan and this place was impressive. Got the lucky chef's table seat and were able to watch the dumpling making process as we eat. Signature Fried Pork Bun were my favourite. Peanut + chilli oil prawn dumplings was an awesome combination. Servings were generous. Happy with the price for the amount we ordered.

I have been coming here for years. The restaurant is always busy! The staff are friendly and polite. You can’t drink any out side drink or there is a $2:50 fee.
The dumplings are always amazing there hand made on the premises and fresh.
The best are xiao long bao. Steamed dumplings with a tasty soup inside.
The pork and chive dumplings are nice but best fried not steamed.
The vegetarian dumplings are nice better steamed then fried.
There bean sprout shoots with garlic are so so tasty

Recent price increases and lack of service hasn't made this place as attractive as usual. As I am a regular, there have been some occasions where the meat in the bun has not been fresh. It is a bit of a hit and miss and recently I feel it's gotten slightly better again. They clearly do not hire enough staff as half the tables are usually empty whilst there is a line outside waiting to be seated.
I did tell you that I love dumplings right? Well this place is another go to place if I want dumplings! Cheap and yum!! Oh and do try their Chinese fried chicken! First time I tried and I fell in love big times! Their xo fried rice cake is also very good! Highly recommendes
Everything we ordered was delicious. Especially the Xiao Long bao and pan fried pork buns. Food came out very quickly, despite the large order, and staff were very accommodating. Only negative was the 45 minute wait for a table, but it was well worth it.
Great price and Great atmosphere for a dinner with friends. Clean and nice facilities and friendly service but above all great food. Do not leave without eating the soup dumplings and panfried crab dumplings theyre juicy and hot on the inside soft and chewy on the outside - so comforting. Try their noodle dishes too - theyre all great!

We live 1 hour away, but chose to go there because of very positive reviews. The restaurant was a simple, no frills environment, but the authentic flavours exceeded our expectations. Finally a smokey fried rice! Every dish was of the highest quality, and the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. We would give more than 5 stars if we could. Will definately back. Maybe tomorrow. Lol

4.5 Stars. Really nice restaurant with great food and great service. Just lacks that finesse to be a 5 Star restaurant. Love sitting in front of the kitchen and watching the chef's prepare and cook. Really nice experience!
Easy tasty food. Fast service and super efficient staff. We had a few vegetarian options and overall it was good.
The best pan fried dumplings I have had in Sydney! However I was very disappointed with the Peking pork with steam buns which was meant to be a signature dish. It didn’t taste anything special and the buns were not served hot or even warm.
First time here today as had a ticket for next door and thought this place looks great they are making dumplings in the window.
Going in it's a typical hole in the wall place which I adore. We sit at the back watching pikes of boiled dumpings shooting past.
We order pork Chive pork and coriander and chicken mushroom. 36 lol for 3 people...........
The dumplings were devine plump juicy and delicious all fantastic but loved the coriander!!
Salt and pepper calamari delicious.
Satay lamb was OK but we were stupid to order it so my fault here.
Shallot Pancake not my bag but others love it.
Overall it's still a five stars from me I really loved I'm definitely going to try handmade Noodles next time.
No more lamb satay like I'm in western Chinese restaurant lolol.
