The name Exclesior Jones might sound reminiscent of the knights of medieval times but it infact takes its name from the previous names of the streets at the cafe’s junction. This is a light filled corner cafe in Ashfield which is a cool spot that feels eclectic with its grid style mod art on the exterior walls and colourful indoor mural. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor space and it’s great to hear that the cafe does online reservations so can feel confident you won’t need to wait in line for hours.

The dishes at Excelsior Jones tasted really good and the coffee is a must get. Would have loved for it to be a little less heavy on the oil as it did sit a bit heavy in my stomach afterwards but the flavour on both dishes is definitely worth the visit and return
This is my go to weekend place! The best coffee. Amazing food that is reasonably priced with good portions. The flavours and additions to meals are so much better than I could do at home. And the service is so friendly and warm.
This is my weekend go to place. Almost every weekend I visit this place and and start my day with the almond milk coffee from Excelsior Jones. I love the coffee and their veggie wrap also I like their almond croissant and Carrot Bread. Must try coffee if you are a coffee lover. They have friendly and welcoming staff.

Homemade Granola : 😍 Amazing
Smoked Trout Hash : 😍 Amazing
The Full Danish : 😁 Great
Coffee : 😍 Amazing
Can’t go wrong with a cup of good coffee and Excelsior Jones does it just right. So good in fact, I had to have another cup! The homemade granola was perfectly refreshing with beautifully sweet poached pair and coconut yoghurt. The smoked trout hash (can also be ordered with pork meatballs) was also delicious with loads of potatoes and fish. The full danish was very much like a platter of the good stuff. With eggs, fresh fruit of of course cheese! Lovely, friendly staff as well. Worth another visit.
Beautiful campos coffee served here. The produce used at this cafe is so fresh and the flavors were delicious. The full danish is a platter full of refreshing pickled veges, eggs and smoked trout. The fish did have bones so be careful! The smoked trout bowl was nice and flavorful, but the lack of texture in the dish did make the bowl boring to eat about half way through. The poached pear granola was delicious with refreshing coconut yoghurt.
Ashfield own delicious cafe nook. Love all of the new dishes on the new menu, creative, delicious and very fresh! A perfect spot for brunch or lunch serving great coffee, service with a smile and picture perfect dishes. #fcba #sydneyfood
I dined here on a Saturday morning for brunch. There were a few available tables which was great because usually when I drove past, it was always full. I had the dukkah coated avocado on toast with feta, roasted tomatoes and pomegranate glaze. The avocado was well seasoned with the dukkah and there was enough for both pieces of toast served with it. The tomatoes were flavoursome and had been roasted perfectly. I'm a big cheese fan and there was plenty of it there so I was very happy. I washed it all down with a fresh OJ. The whole meal only set me back $22. Win! Plenty of street parking in this cosy neighbourhood cafe.
It's been a long time since I had eggs benedict so I had it on Thursday the 14th and I really enjoyed it, I had ordered it with bacon.
They are really generous with what goes on it and also they serve two instead of one where they might serve eggs benedict somewhere else
I love that this cafe is in my hood. An extensive menu with very good vegetarian and vegan options. We loved everything we tried, especially the hotcakes and the quinoa porridge. I will definitely be going back again! #brunchinsydney #hotcakes #porridge #casualdining
This is a super popular restaurant in the area, on the weekends theres a big lineup. The food is quality and the coffee is great too. Indoor/Outdoor dining areas, open everyday. . Pictured is the Breakfast Salad; with baby spinach, avocado, carrot, radish, quinoa, cranberry, apple, herbs, poached eggs, pistachio and yuzu dressing $16
When your eyes are bigger than your stomach, the attached photos are the result! Enjoyed a feast of a brunch at Excelsior Jones this weekend with great food and customer service.
Stand out dishes and drinks of the day for me were the pork hash, panna cotta and pumpkin bruschetta as well as the activated chia seed smoothie and organic peppermint tea.
Judging by the massive flat lay shot over two tables, it's safe to say that there is something for everyone here so come visit and enjoy!
My thanks to FCBA for extending the invite and Excelsior Jones for hosting us.

Friendly-looking, cute place in a picturesque area (okay, it was a beautiful morning when I went there). I'd heard so much about the pork hash that I ordered it before I got the menu - and it completely lived up to expectations. The eschalots could have been chopped a bit smaller, but that's a minor quibble. The pork was tender and chewy at the same time (in the best way!) and the charred bits of potato were the tastiest.
I ordered the masala chai, and while it wasn't as strong as I like it, it was quite flavorful.
Service was friendly and prompt.
The table next to me ordered the ricotta hotcakes, and I'll be going back for those some day!
This busy cafe is situated near residential homes in Ashfield. The atmosphere is casual with indoor and outdoor seating. I was impressed with the brunch menu here!
I tried the Spanish Chorizo with baked egg 🍳 and the 🐟House Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict 😍. The smoked salmon was actually the salmon fillet, not the slices and was soft in texture, my fav out of the two.
The Spanish chorizo was quite strong on flavour, with cumin and paprika spices👌🏼.
We also ordered the Watermelon, pineapple and mint juice which was a special on the day, very refreshing!
I would come back here again to brunch!
Enjoyable every time and perfect for two. The maple bacon ricotta pancakes are worth going back to. The gingerbread milkshake is out of this world
Seriously good food and coffee, presentation is also great! Definitely return one day! Loving the quaint rustic furniture, and atmosphere is enjoyable.
Cute brunch spot tucked away in Ashfield. They have good service and great food. I have been super impressed the few times I’ve been and is definitely a go to if I want good brunch food without having to travel far.
Food and drinks were quickly brought out, even for a big group of >12, much appreciated. Nice range of food, especially helpful that it’s all day breakfast/lunch. Vegan/Veggie and Gluten free friendly with more than one option. Menu attached (as I couldn’t find it anywhere online previously)

One of the trendier cafes in the inner west!
It's really good for a coffee/shake and cake or brunch 🍔

I usually return for my favourite dish: The smoked salmon hash 🤗
It's always delicious and the salmon is smoked in house and fresh 😙
The cheeseburger here is also quite delicious! They do have a limited menu though..

I find not all their dishes are great, so work out your favourites because every time i go there i go for the comfort of knowing i'll order my favourite dish!
We recently had breakfast at this place and three of us ordered pancake, winter salad and toast on avocado. Wow... the pancake was a bit full on. It's thick & huge with a lot of stuff on it...too much honeycombs. It's good to share it with two or three people. My winter salad was yummy. I felt really good after eating that healthy earthy salad. The atmosphere is good with friendly staff. It's better to book a table as it gets packed easily after 10.
After a second time i just had to write a review. It was amazing!!! The mushroom on toast is a must have, the flavours are just crazy good. Even the coffee is great!!! First time was awesome but today it was a little off but still good(must be a man thing when they are behind the machine haha😁🙏🏼) overall was amazing!!! Thanks guys.

Long has this place been on my list of cafes to visit (I say this a lot). There's something about the atmosphere and ambience that gives this cafe a nice local charm vibe. Very welcoming staff with quick and helpful service.
The coffee (soy mocha) is top-notch, as you'd expect and their food is just as good. I ordered their special pasta for the day (shell pasta with chorizo, ham hock and smoked eggplant). Pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce ratio was on point.
From memory, hubby ordered the beefwich (which came out more looking like a burger, than the sandwich we expected) but it was sure dang tasty. The bun however made it a little messy, falling apart.
Worth trying // anything that tickles your fancy on the specials board
Pros // great coffee, lovely ambience, friendly service
Cons // I would expect can get very busy (as it was almost full inside on a Saturday at 2pm, 1hr before kitchen close)

Brilliant food and equally great coffee. Great little corner location and their friendly staff are always helpful which makes me feel welcome all the time!
It is located in an extremely inconvenient area around Ashfield. It was on the corner of the road and looks fairly ordinary from the outside. The interior was no better than the outside, very simple and basic décor. I sat down and the waiters will then bring over the menu, then they will ask you if you would start with some coffee. So I ordered a latte. The menu size was reasonable and had labels indicating vegetarian and gluten-free options. I ordered the Roast cauliflower and hummus with pita bread because from reviews it sounded great.
The coffee was average and not very exciting. I later ordered a long black but it was horrible. The presentation of the pita bread was good, all the ingredients were visible and portion size was reasonable. It was delicious, I could’ve never imagined a completely vegetarian dish tasting this good. You could taste every element in the dish; for example the purple cabbage kimchi, hummus and cauliflower. It was brought together well and the egg just oozes into the nooks of the stacked up vegetables. However, the only letdown was the pita bread because it was too moist. I would recommend this place to try this pita bread but it will be a trek for those who don’t own a car.
This is one of those typical hipster cafes that happens to be in the middle of nowhere in Ashfield. Can't say much for the service or the decor (water comes in brown jars) but the food is nice and there is a good selection of cakes. I've been here plenty to know it is consistent and I do mean consistent throughout weekend brunches as well as weekday mornings. Coffee is ok too.
Highly recommended. Well done, excelsiorians!
I would love to see this cafe expand! Amazing food, amazing coffee, drinks and (to die for) milkshakes and even better service. Everyone is so switched on to what is going on. They're constantly busy but everything is always consistent.
Excelsior Jones is a local gem and much loved cafe in Ashfield and Croydon area. Their friendly staff are always helpful which makes me feel welcome all the time! Coffee is great! Food is delicious! Food portion is just right. Price is like average cafe menu in Sydney.
The roast cauliflower and broccoli with pita bread was very tasty. Worth trying. Prices were $15/ $16 so reasonably priced, however portions were way too small. Even if there needs to be a slight price increase, the serving sizes really need to be bigger. Breakfast salad was ok but once again it was tiny and essentially it's a few leaves so not filling at all!! Good thing is they are both vegan/can be made vegan so they have options available.
Although there is no shortage of dumplings in Ashfield, there is a distinct dearth of good coffee. However, this first visit to Excelsior Jones quelled any concerns I may have had for the locals in relation to sourcing a decent coffee fix. Great coffee, and probably the most reasonably priced in Sydney at $3.50 a cup - and yes, that's dine in. A miscommunication in our order saw us with two lattes instead of one cafe latte and one cappuccino. Although not quite sure if the mistake occurred during the order making or order taking, the waitress promptly replaced the latte with a cappuccino. Top points for customer service.
We arrived just as the kitchen was closing at 3pm on a Sunday so settled on a cinnamon cronut. Will have to return to try the food.
We ordered their signature pork hash and their healthier option, breakfast salad. The pork hash is a heavy dish as its main ingredients are pork and potato which felt very rich at the completion of it. On contrast, the breakfast salad was flavoursome and lighter which mixed very well with the pork hash. Overall the atmosphere was very peaceful and not as busy as it was near the residence area.
✔️atmosphere
✔️food - had the mushrooms with toast and potato smash in bowl.
Definitely a must.
Good place for brunch, their milkshake is really nice too. Cozy place, friendly waitresses. Had a Pork Hash with Fried Buckwheat, Eschalots poached egg and fresh herbs
Recommended for brunch
I came here on Sunday for brunch and the wait wasn't long to get seated but it took a while for our food to come. The food was average but the cronuts and desserts were amazing - would only come here for desserts 😕
This place used to be the best cafe in Ashfield.
So I told my friend I was going to take him to the best cafe in the are to have lunch but when we got there I realised that the place had changed.
My friend was disappointed and he could only see two options for lunch.
He actually wanted to try the eggs Benedict but they only serve it in the morning even though other breakfast options are available during the day.
The coffee is still good
The menu was the smallest that I have ever seen in a café. However what I did have (the salmon dish) was very tasty, healthy and flavoursome. I asked for a thick shake and that is what I got and it still had the same density when I had finished the meal.Well done. Servings are large. The cakes were also very fresh and tasty. More smiling staff would go a long way.

Walking in to Excelsior , I was a little annoyed as they had a lot of patrons. I thought that we would be waiting a long time and would be ignored as they were busy. Completely not true. A waitress approached me within a minute and had us seated at a recently vacated table. A waiter constantly kept checking on us, giving us every opportunity to talk to him if we needed something.
Food was very artistic. I ordered a salmon hash off the lunch menu and was extremely happy with the taste. Salmon was cooked perfectly. The buckey wheat added a great crunch to the dish. I thought it wouldn't be filling but I stand corrected.
I entered the restaurant with certain notions and all were overturned by this quaint place.
When I think of Ashfield, first thoughts are of the eternally congested Liverpool Road, and also mighty fine Shanghai cuisine. For the last decade I have navigated the crazy traffic for some of the best Xiao Long Bao in Australia. Excelsior Jones is now a beacon for sensational coffee and cafe fare that have Gen Ys clamouring to instagram. Prior to Excelsior Jones, Ashfield, which is just 10 minutes from the centre of Sydney CBD had no coffee of note and cafes were restricted to the first wave cafe vendors and the ubiquitous franchises serving mediocre offerings. The Excelsior Jones team have brought their knowledge from working in Surry Hills to the inner west. The cafe commands a spot on the corner of Queen Street and Armstrong street, and is nicely ensconced in a suburban setting, away from the hustle and bustle of Liverpool and Parramatta Roads. When it first opened, seating was limited to indoors, but the owners fought hard with the council, and we the customers are the winners with seating outside for an extra 24 people along with seating for about 30 inside. On a Saturday at 1:30 we were able to get a seat without a wait, which would have been unheard of just a year or 18 months ago.
Whenever my friends want to catch up in Ashfield, Excelsior Jones is always a great place for that. The food's always amazing and there's a great selection on offer. It does get a bit loud inside when it's busy but it all adds to the atmosphere.
Really good coffee and definitely agree with my tastebud. The poached eggs with potato and bacon is different and interesting. Potato tastes nice and chewy but not so heavy as normal bacon dishes do. The place itself is cosy and simple decoration. I would definitely go back.
Trendy little cafe in residential Ashfield with great food and hip atmosphere. The broad beans and edamame on toast was fresh, vibrant and tasty, though the poached eggs on top were watery and cold. The pork hash was delicious but a tad on the oily side. We dined outside and our doggie was more than welcome .. a huge plus for families with fur-babies.
•Smoked salmon hash - delicious and filling. The has really does fill you up, I couldn't finish mine on top of a milkshake.
•Friendly staff, they have outdoor seating without being neglected too much, could do with more umbrellas (went on a really sunny and hot day)
Very limited menu which is great because they execute good, quality and tasty food quicker to their many awaiting diners. Went on a Saturday morning for breakfast so I wasn't surprised at the volume of people present but I was even more surprised at how accommodating the staff were in getting us our seats swiftly and efficiently. Some of their main stand outs of menu items are their different types of hash, there is the pork hash or smoked salmon hash. Tried both, and immediately satisfied. Crispy grilled potatoes on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside, mixed with some crunchy buckwheat, good dose of flavoursome herbs and eschallots and a generous serving of their smoked salmon or pulled pork. Very tasty, well presented and filling despite it looking quite small in size when it initially came out. Another must try there for me is the creamy mushroom with herbs. So simple yet so delicious. Creamy, well seasoned mushroom heaven! Oh and did I mention good coffee.. Very good coffee. I like my coffee well balanced and strong and theirs was made just right. Not much of a standout in terms of decor and does not have much of an ambience as its just a regular humble cafe. Good for some quick takeaway or a casual drop in.
My Milk Bun Ribwich tasted nice but the poached egg inside was a bit of a miss for me. It was cooked really well but it made the burger really messy and difficult to eat. Personally I like to hold my burgers in my hands but because the egg dripped everywhere I had to eat it with a knife and fork. However the yolk completed the meat really well and the overall dish was nice. Chips were good but nothing exceptional.
Came here for lunch with a friend today. She had been here before and recommended we both go. We each ordered the cheeseburger. My burger was good, however I thought the tomato relish was rather overpowering so deducted from the combination of flavours that could have been present. The stand out was definitely the fried spuds. Absolutely amazing, I could eat an entire plate of them alone. Service was fantastic. Our orders were taken promptly and our food arrived with hardly any wait. A good experience.
Great cafe! Worth my walk there. Its randomly in a residential area and so you think it wouldnt be pumping but i got in there and it was hell busy! I ordered the smoked salmon 'hash' - was super tasty. Poached egg was cooked perfectly. I ordered a side of mushrooms and i suggest you do the same as the 'hash' bowl was a bit salty and the creaminess of the mushrooms (they come in a creamy sauce) balanced it out for me. Ice latte was yummy. I got a caramel milkshake too - you could actually taste the malt and the caramel flavour wasnt overpowering! Mm mmmm ! Good job excelsior jones peeps - this place is poppin!
I've found Excelsior Jones a bit hit or miss unfortunately. Situated in the suburbs of Ashfield, it's a very convenient choice if you're looking for breakfast or lunch and something more in line with the trendier inner city cafe philosophy.
The menu has variety and specials so there's bound to be something that interests you. Drinks are also good and depending on the time of the day it's easy to visit just for a coffee.
I've had some great meals here, but other underwhelming (including the occasional milkshake). I can't figure out a pattern for this, so I chalk it up to one of the symptoms of a busy cafe.
Tasty food, very friendly staff. Not too busy, and very easy to park. Only improving area I would suggest is to offer more variety of drinks. The coffee was a bit weak and watery according to my friend. My hot chocolate was fantastic, not too sweet.
A group of 5 of us went there around 11am on Monday 5th Oct (labour day). The place was packed and we had to wait almost 1.5hrs by the time we got seated and food served. We got 2 beef brisket brioches, 1 pork hash, 1 eggs benedict, 1 bacon & egg sandwich and 1 cinnamon cronut. Overall the food was good. would recommend going at a less busy period to better enjoy the meal.
5 senses coffee served here. Probably enough said but the food here is great as well. Plenty of seating but still gets crowded. Would be in the top 5 for the inner west comfortably.
Simple, delicious, unpretentious food. We'd always drop by when in the area. Simple but delicious menu, with good coffee and friendly service on the side. Thumbs up from me.
If you're a mushroom fan, then you are missing out buddy! These mushrooms on toast is a fave that I always order whenever we go here, it's crazy and so amazing, must be all the butter and cream :)
The top line: A cute cafe in the suburban streets. It’s slightly out of the way if you don’t live nearby – either a short bus ride (418) from Ashfield station or walk for ~20minutes. Would love to come back again. Wish I live in nearby or it’s located closer to the main streets of Ashfield though.
If you know me, you know a good bacon egg with capsicum relish deserves a good review.
It's different to any bacon and egg roll you've had. Definitely worth a try
Always consistent and good. Always a pleasure. Wish there were more tables and seating. I think outdoor dinig has been approved.
Tucked away in a little corner of Suburban Sydney is a little café which was once a secret to those in the area. As winner of 2013 Best New Café by SMH Good Café Guide , the secret was out and it was a matter of time before the queues would start forming. I had been to Excelsior Jones late last year and it instantly found itself on my “Places to Brunch” list. I fell in all kinds of love with its Eggs Benedict and was really digging the laid-back vibe. Though it’s a bit of a distance from me (about 45 mins drive), I am always willing to make the drive there. On this occasion, when we arrived we were advised that there would be a 20-25 minute wait (the queues have started!), and as it would take us that long to get anywhere decent, we decided to wait it out, but after about 10 minutes were shown to our table. It pains to me say that I was a little disappointed with the service this time. We finished our coffees and the food had not yet arrived. When we asked where our food was we were gi
A cute, homey cafe in suburbia Ashfield with wonderful food and a tempting drinks menu to match. Keeping in mind they're for their somewhat marvellous beverage creations and famous Pork/Smoked Salmon Hash, we felt like something a little more lunch-y so went for a cheeseburger and roast cauliflower and carrot sandwich. Both were spectacular, the fried spuds with the cheeseburger were amazing. The lime and coconut malted milkshake was refreshing and absolutely delicious! Will definitely be coming back to try everything else on the all day breakfast and lunch menu.
Choc Mint Malted Milkshake + Cherry Ripe Malted Milkshake ~ So good, so filling. The taste lives up to their flavours...
Thankfully, the roast pork sandwich came out a lot better than my Ancient History essay on Hatshepsut. The roast pork was extremely tender and reminded me of an optimised version of the white pork one finds in Vietnamese pork rolls. The key with any sandwich is finding multiple textures that go well together and the combination of Swiss cheese and crisp lettuce filled that role. The bread was also nicely toasted and was definitely not Helga’s (not that Helga’s is bad, I just like making jokes).
There isn't a specific kids menu save for the house made chicken nuggets with chips ($10) for lunch. However there are quite a few options off the main menu that your kidlets will enjoy. For example a serve of toast with spreads will set you back $5. The little bulls munched on the muffin of the day (apple and raspberry) $3.50 and there are are loads of other baked goodies that kids would enjoy.
