The environment was ultra clean and cozy, understated - comparing to the neighbour Mamaruya this one is cleaner, quieter and offers a better and more intense experience. Mamaruya is too busy, noisy and oily (both on floor and on the tables).
Food was YUM and well prepared/ cooked, price reasonable.
We had the slow cooked pork belly, cheese scallop, wakame salad, sashimi boat, tuna tacos and horensai. Great stuff at good prices. Will be back another time to check out the other things on the menu.
Great little Japanese restaurant in the heart of Ashfield with free parking (up to 2 hours) in nearby shopping mall. Clean restaurant with open kitchen, somewhat understaffed; the chef delivers the meal to the table when it is crowded. Other than that, great food for a decent price, especially the dinner boxes for $12.50 with, among others, the following varieties: chicken katsu, pork katsu, and karaage chicken. A dinner box (see photo) comes with bowl of rice, Miso soup, fried fish, sushi, desert, and salad.
A relatively quiet Japanese shop further down from the middle of Ashfield, but a lovely one at that. The food was dainty and pretty, but tasted nice also. And the prices are great! I ordered the green salad roll and veggie sushi and they were so cute! Most vegan options when it comes to sushi are just avocado rolls and seaweed salad, but here they've put together a creative option which deserves a huge thumbs up.
Amazing food & great value for money!!
Boyfriend and I are regulars here and this is one of our favourite Jap places to dine. The food is always so delicious, especially the dragon roll!!
However, somedays they seem very understaffed and service takes longer than usual.
This place is great. Best value is in the "winter special" bentos, which seem to feature all year round. Service is good, price reasonable and food great. Been many times, never disappoints. Avoid the queues of the competition next door, Shinsen is 👍.

Food: Ordered the "Winter Dinner Special" which is a bento box with lots of goodies. One was Teriyaki Chicken and the other was Chilli Pork. Both were very tasty and really satisfying. The portions were great and so much variety in one box!
Service: Staff were friendly and accommodating. We visited on a Saturday night and it was quite busy. I suggest reserving ahead of time on weekends.
Price: The winter Dinner special was $12.80 for the bento box. For the portions and the variety in the box, it's a great deal. The rest of the menu was priced reasonably.
Ambience: It was a modern take on Japanese design. It's beautiful, just a bit small.
Japanese Dining Bar by Shinsen is a new-ish restaurant (I’m pretty sure they were just opened at the beginning of the year) in Ashfield. Interestingly, they opened up the shop right next to another, and more established, Japanese restaurant in the area. They have quite an assortment of Japanese dishes in their menu
Incredible value for money. Very fresh, good servings, absolutely delicious and at comparable other places you pay easily double! NOT Korean-Japanese, but actually Japanese chefs! Highly recommended! One of our regular go to places!

Especially during lunch time being a big eater their portions fill me up. Staff are very friendly.
Their soft shell crab don is killer for only 9.8 at lunch time.
A contemporary, minimalist space greets you as you pass through the glass sliding doors.
A clear, well laid out menu lists everything from sushi and sashimi to udon, donburi and bento boxes, with photos to help guide your decision.
Our meal consisted of baby avocado and baby tuna rolls, salmon and avocado roll, gyoza, Crab Don (crispy soft shell crab with teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo on rice) and Katsu Curry Don (chicken cutlet with Japanese curry on rice). All the dishes came out quickly, despite the restaurant being full of diners (and this was mid-week on a cold, rainy evening so I can only imagine how busy this place must get).
Food was fresh and tasty, and incredibly well priced. Looking forward to our next meal here to try more of the dishes!
We ordered a lot of dishes here and went nuts because the menu pictures looked amazing. The food was nice but definitely stay clear of the mixed tempura, you're much better off without it, 18 mostly miniscule pieces. The agadashi tofu was unusually dry and tasteless. However, the rest of the food was tasty, the wagyu steak was definitely interesting if you wanted an Asian steak option.
I would have rated this place 5/5 a few months ago but some changes have been made to this place I'm not a fan of. This is one of my casual lunch places locally as it has good value lunch specials. Regular menu of sushi and rice also good. There's some inconsistencies in quality in most visits but overall nothing too unbearable until now.
Recently they have been cost cutting our favourite bento boxes have by replacing the crab claw with calamari. Hugely disappointed! Bring back the crab claw!
Came for dinner,like the reviewer before me there wasn't many people inside then all of a sudden it's almost full.
The first thing that strikes me is the modern though plain decor. We took our seats and the waitress came soon after. Food came out at a reasonable rate.

What makes this place better than your typical Japanese restaurant is everything is fresh! The miso soup was not watered down,the teriyaki chicken tastes better than most other places.
Prices are what I expected to pay.

•Found this place by accident as we were heading next door to Manmaruya for dinner on a Thursday night
•The place was empty as we got there early but quickly filled up, they only had 1 waiter and it felt a bit understaffed. He seemed quite timid but he was very friendly
•An extensive menu offered
•Sashimi large - fresh sashimi and well presented on an oriental boat. A grade sashimi
•Hotate aburi (seared scallops) - seared perfectly and very delicious!
•Crumbed prawn roll - very generous with fillings and done well
•Beef tataki roll - wow! Interesting combination of flavours, slightly too much wasabi. Otherwise another masterpiece
•Soft shell crab tempura - never seen this before offered anywhere so thought might try it. Nice and crunchy and goes with the tempura sauce surprisingly well!
•Spicy seafood hotpot - they should really put a warning label "EXTREMELY SPICY" my goodness it was.. You know what they say, free entry but you pay on the way out! Comes with a bowl of udon also. The hotpot itself was filled with lots of goodies and overall a great valued dish
•Green tea ice cream - one way to tell a Japanese restaurant is good is by their own made green tea ice cream. And well, it did not disappoint! Rich green tea flavour is the only way to have it!
Brilliant! Amazing dishes and value for money. Have never had a bad meal here and been going regularly since they opened. A welcome addition to Ashfield.
Yum! Shinsen you definitely delivered some delicious food! I came here last Saturday evening with a group of work friends and personally ordered the soft-shell crab don and the dragon roll. Soooo good! Definitely having cravings for the soft-shell crab and the chilli mayo right now just writing this review.
Other dishes ordered included the dinner bento and katsu/chilli pork don which all came out with huge portions and very nicely presented! As a local I will definitely be revisiting soon and can't wait to try out some of the other items on the menu.

Finally! This place has been updated on Zomato! It has been 4 months coming, but luckily I have had the opportunity to dine here on 3 separate occasions, so no time wasted!
The menu is extensive and super user friendly with copious pictures to help you choose from. Food arrives quickly and staff may appear a little timid but are actually quite accommodating. The decor is cosy with more of a restaurant than a bar vibe.
Don't be deceived by the size of the mini pots as they are great to share and offer plentiful fresh ingredients (as well as a side of udon). Salmon volcano roll, which I order every time, is just about THE best thing ever. The addition of fried tempura batter has me buckling at the knees just thinking about it.
Scallops were lovely and sweet with a tangy bite from the yuzu. Bento box is stuffed to the brim with assorted goodies and soft shell crab comes in a pair! My stomach may have just rumbled.
Dessert is not the best, but nothing I would hold against them. Brûlée gave a sound crack, even though the custard was a little eggy. Spring rolls and matcha panna cotta were both tasty but not very memorable.
Best part is the whole experience won't break the bank! If you never realised you needed a salmon volcano in your life before, you will after this!
Great little Japanese restaurant with some of the dishes I having a hint of Italian fusion . Good portion and great prices . Nice Japanese addition in the inner west area , highly recommend it
Had a great experience at Shinsen Japanese Dining Bar with the kids. We had three of their lunch specials. Bento box portion was generous, sushi and sashimi was fresh and teriyaki chicken was nicely cooked.
Given the difficulties businesses are having with staff shortages because of Covid/flu, I no longer expect all cafes and restaurants to run as smoothly as they did 3 years ago.
Although they seemed a little light on floor staff, we were happy with the service we received today. We will definitely return to try the rest of their menu.
Very delicious, fresh and tasty food! Everything was nice and the service too. The restaurant inside is beautifully decorated and even the menu is so well designed with photos for everythingon the menu. Definitely will be coming back!

I live locally and I must say this place is one of my favourites! Amazing food, great selections, fresh ingredients, good service and BYO. The salmon volcano, tempura and chicken katsu roll are definite favourites. Portions are great too, they’re not overly big but very decent. You would leave the place feeling satisfied. Not to mention the great affordable pricing too.
Moderately priced for Japanese. The letdown was that they brought the entered and mains out at the same time, so the mains weren't hot by the time we ate them. It is easy to find street parking on Liverpool road even on weekend nights. The Gyoza had a nice outer coating and was the highlight. Good Eel dish. Volcano rolls were really nice
