Review Eaton Ashfield - Ashfield

This place is amazing. It's open super late; the staff are always helpful and friendly. The food is always delicious!!

Very delicious. The XO Pippies with fried noodles were fantastic. (I'll be back to have crab) Perfectly seasoned and crisp vegetables. Fantastically tender beef in black bean. We've been living in Ashfield for about 4 years and have never been in but have always wanted to, Glad I visited and I'll delicious be back.

Quite busy on Chinese New Year’s day. Went with friends and had great combination of seafood. Lobster sashimi, abalone, pipis are all delicious. Other stir fry dishes are a bit too salty and average overall. If you come for seafood, definitely recommend!

The food was not great and the food was pricey. It doesn’t have the atmosphere in the restaurant to make it worth paying for. Will give 3 stars for their selection of fresh seafood however. Staff however need to be more at tentative to their customers - give them the menu quickly, monitor when they’re ready to order, check they have the right cutlery and serve them water at least whilst they wait.

Very welcoming! Everyone is friendly and very attentive, esp the owner himself (I think he’s the owner :) Ordered the lobster and pipi with noodles!! Not cheap but defo worth!!! I really love how they are open til 1 in the morning as well. Also, free fortune cookie and fruits!!

Ordered the deep fried eggplant, snake beans in belachan sauce, pork in black viniger sauce, salt and pepper squid, prawn in ginger shallot sauce, shredded beef in Peking sauce, chicken and salted fish fried rice. Food was good 8/10 however the service was slow because the wait staff did not fill up the tea pots and did not check in to see if everything was ok. It felt as though they were NOT attentive to the table.

We tried Singapore mud crab and it was badly prepared. Gravy was not buttery like singapore gravy, crab meat was alright and tasted weird for a pricetag of 90 dollars per KG. Fried buns were good though. Wont visit again.

A decent Chinese restaurant offering a good assortment of authentic foods.

We ordered today a lobster with noodles, Pippi shells, half a duck, tofu and some sweet and sour pork. The noodles with the lobster were unique compared to traditional ones, whilst the lobster was decent, albeit not as juicy and succulent as others. The other dishes too were good, just not fantastic, with our favourite dish surprisingly being the tofu.

As with most Chinese restaurants service and ambience is scarce, but the authenticity of the food here hits the mark.

Food: 3.5/5
Service: 2.5/5
Ambience: 2.5/5
Value: 3/5

Overall: 3/5

The worst dining experience I’ve ever had in recent years! So angry that I had to leave a comment here. I sat there for a while and they did not serve tea and then they realised I was not there for takeaway. Before my food was served, they asked me to move to another table because there were a couple coming in and I’m sitting at a four-person table. I said okay and got my bag about to move because I understand they need to make more money. The other couple said it is fine and sat somewhere else, so I sat back down and the waiter insisted I move to another table for potential customers later. I felt extremely embarrassed and everyone is looking at me and yet I did move to a corner table and then they didn’t serve my plate or tea until I asked. At this point I’m already very frustrated, and when they serve the food-yeowtiao, there are two very burnt unbeatable pieces so I told them to get another one. They simply just took back and threw away the burnt pieces and came back. So I’m sitting here eating this very average and overpriced food... without chopsticks! Definitely not recommended to anyone. Treat customers so badly! I wish I had not come in, ruined my Saturday evening! Shame on you!

Anyone who cares about above minimum service quality, do not go to this restaurant! HORRIBLE!

Recommended by a friend but I was disappointed with the satay chicken. Too many onions that were rather tough to chew. Worst of all was the price.Very, very overpriced at $21.50 and the rice was extra. Had far better quality satay chicken in 2 outlets in Chinatown and they were only $12 and they both included a separate serving of rice.,Satay chicken is one of my favourite dishes.A pity that Eton fails in this respect.

Nice Cantonese restaurant! Had been here multiple times for casual dining. Friendly staff as well.

Recommend dish: stir fry beef with bitter melon, fry egg with pickles

4.5/5

Came here as a group of 14, the crab and a bitter melon pudding we wanted were out of stock, but there were plenty others delicious options. The highlight were the fish (with dry beancurd and bitter melon), pipi with crispy rice noodles, the egg white (served with black vinegar and egg yolk) as well as a saucy chicken with mustard greens dish. The fish was cooked just right, very meaty and the black bean sauce gave the dish a nice flavour; the pipi was large and the sauce has a nice heat to it.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience, staff were super helpful, refilling tea making sure everything was okay. The price was super reasonable as well, will definitely comeback to try other dishes.

Ordered noodles. Something was burnt which ruined the dish. Entrées are awesome. Order the duck, you can't go wrong. Service is good, depends on your waiter. Open til late which helps
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!
I have been here on two occasion. The food is the same quality. How ever if you came late a night they do rush you to order because there getting ready to close.

It’s open till 2 but I would get there no later then 1 if you want to enjoy your meal and not feel rushed.

The satay chicken was moist and well balanced with spice/ flavour.

The dim sims are mind blowing fresh and amazing! The best I have ever had! I can’t wait to go back and try there other things from the menu!

Came here for a catch up dinner with friends and was so happy that we took a punt on here.

The prices here are high but the servings are appropriately sized in ratio with said prices. The food is also very tasty and not as oily as some other chinese I have eaten at in the past.

I have been in Sydney for nearly 3 years and this was my first chinese sit down dinner where I have actually been happy with my meal. I suppose good chinese is hard to come by if you live close to the city with no car!!

I wanted to give this 4.5 stars but no more half ratings from Zomato so Eaton, you get a rare 5 stars from me!
If you're looking for a place for supper, this will be one good choice. Would highly recommend Fried Vermicelli with Pipi.. Their staff will attend to every customers and at least some small talk. The negative side of this restaurant, it's quite pricey.

Had some expectations when coming here and we were left disappointed. The food was either too bland or too salty! One of the vegetarian dishes, the bamboo shoots just tasted bad and I usually like it. Nothing impressed me and there dessert was oranges and jelly!

I like this restaurant because it open till late so whenever I think of eating late at night I'll definitely go this shop.

My favourite dishes xo source pp and typically sweet n sour pork

Does My Bomb Look Big In This
One group of diners disproportionately affected by Mike Baird's unjust Lockout Laws were chefs and other hospitality staff. By closing down late night Sydney, Baird effectively cut off the possibility of a post-work drink and a decent feed, for the very folk who feed us at dinner time. Word on the floor at Eaton Chinese Restaurant in Ashfield is: plenty of hospitality staff, including Dan Hong's kitchen crew, come to take advantage of their seven-day, 2am kitchen. With dark tanks blocking your ability to see much inside, Eaton Chinese Restaurant looks, from the outside, like a bit of a gamble. Brave the tricolour neon and you'll be rewarded with an extensive menu that rivals late-night stalwarts like Golden Century, for a fraction of the price. Their complimentary chilli pickled cabbage is a great place to begin. Live Pipis ($30) are a must-do, and a reasonable serve for two people only set us back thirty bucks. We skipped over our usual XO sauce for...

Of all the Chinese restaurants on this busy strip, THIS is by far my favourite. Not sure why it says $40 for two ppl in the Zomato info above though, that'd be at least what itd cost without alcohol just by myself. There's an egg and crab meat dish that's off the chain. The squid ink fried rice is a must try. The live fish is also a fave option, they ask you which fish and cook them so perfectly. I've dined at Eaton 10+ times and keep going back. Highly recommended.

Beautiful food! Saw some reviews below that doubting myself to go Eaton or not. But went to the place few times already, and will keep going. They got special mud crab cooking style and all seafood is live and fresh. The boss always hanging in the restaurant to make sure all the dish is in the quality. I have to say service is friendly. You can't expect them to service like five star hotel. It is a family business and they got special Chinese food! Isn't that should be the point, we should go? If anyone looking for fine dining restaurant, you can go anywhere to pay $60 for a course. why people paying $40 for a nice meal, you got seafood and meat but still complain the service not good as The Quay... Give a go to Eaton, order the Hong Kong Barbour style crab and XO pipi, you will give them 5.

Incredible! Just go, you will love this place. Service was actually very friendly for a Chinese restaurant, maybe it's because we were in the burbs?
Anyway, the food was that good you could have had chimpanzees serving me and I'd be happy.
Firstly the Hong Kong style mud crab was out of this world good - perfectly cooked crab,
supremely balanced sauce with just enough chili to kick the dish into overdrive - this was the
highlight.
The two kinds noodles with XO sauce was also outstanding. Again perfectly balanced, with well
thought out flavours and ingredients.
The braised eggplant with mince was also a standout.
You can really tell from the meals we ate that the people cooking this food actually really cared. The freshness of the ingredients, the presentation, the thoughtful combination of flavours, the excellent technique and skills.. You could just tell that a lot of love went into preparing our meals tonight. A truly feelgood experience, very memorable.

Eaton never fails. Had Peking Duck last visit. Really good. Also always order the XO pipis with vermicelli noodles as they are the best I have ever had. This is one of the few Chinese Restaurants in Sydney that I go back to regularly

I was playing around with the zomato app and discovers this place was opened until late so went and visited.

Was by myself so only ordered a short soup and flat noodles with beef. The wontons were nice in the soup. The noodles had a bit too much noodles but tasted nice as well.

"Do you want to eat the pigeon head?" Master Five looks at me and nods eagerly. I transfer the bird's head to his bowl where he picks it up, looks at it curiously, pauses, and then crunch goes the beak. I look at him nervously. Crunch goes the eyes. Crunc
I Ate My Way Through
Bits and bobs about Eaton Restaurant have been entering my consciousness for several years now… However, it wasn’t until recently that I finally dined there. Ashfield may be known for its abundance of Shanghainese restaurants, but at Eaton Chinese Restaurant, it’s all about the live seafood and its mainland and Cantonese dishes. Unlike the cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurant in my previous blog post , the Eaton experience is very much refined. As a “proper Chinese restaurant”, we have the delight of sipping on the complimentary house soup while browsing the broad menu. It’s a nourishing soup with watercress and pork bones; I just love picking at the pork bones – the fall-off-the-bone meat is flaky and so tender. There’s also complimentary pickled cabbage , although I find that everything else is so flavourful, we barely touch it. To start, we have pipis in XO sauce . The market price for these today are $51/kg. Our half kilo order comes in at 560g which rounds off to $28. The XO sauc

Served Raw Food. My friends and I ordered a spicy black pepper beef dish only to get stomach aches shortly after eating the dish. ThMy friends and I ordered a spicy black pepper beef dish only to get stomach aches shortly after eating the dish. The meat was extremely chewy so I spat it out to and saw red coloured meat.

I alerted the waitress immediately who told me it could in now way be uncooked due to it being fried twice as part of the cooking process. I said "No, it is raw you can see it". See attached photo of raw meat. She then microwaved it and returned it to us.

In Cantonese cuisine most, if not all, meat are served COOKED and we expected this. I am upset and feel cheated that I paid for spat out pieces of raw meat sitting on our plates.

Unrelated to the raw dish, when I attempted to order the fish fillet corn sauce the owner who served me suggested I get the fresh live fish. I politely declined and said i'll have the usual. He then blabbered on about it being very good and thought he could upsell an expensive dish. He added it onto the list and attempted to walk away. I told him to cancel that order as he would not allow me to have the standard dish.

In his failure to upsell, out of frustration, he said we did not know good food from bad. He then added that we were clueless in ordering good food.

This was uncalled for because all I wanted was the standard fish fillet in corn sauce. I firmly told him no "swimming fish" multiple times but was still harrassed.

I have visited this restaurant on average every quarter for over 5 years. Mainly good experiences with only small issues.

To those who read this review and pick to visit this restaurant be firm but polite and ask them to make new dishes from scratch, e.g. "African burnt pork meat" or cancel the dish from the order if it turns out to be unacceptable. They usually do cook it or cancel it. Also, the portions and quality seem rationed heavily during busy times such as weekends.

I have lost my confidence in Eaton and would think twice before going from now on.

As an Ashfield resident for over 5 years, I thought it about time I wrote a review for Eaton Chinese Restaurant. This place is set apart from the other local eateries, (for one, this place has tablecloths!), and although the ambience is not amazing, the quality of food must impress. I can say hand on heart that this place has some wonderful food, one only needs some guidance as to what to order. Experience dictates that the live seafood is a must, our favourite which we return to time and time again is the "Hong Kong Harbour style mud crab", usually a very reasonable price of around $40 per kilo, (don't forget the vermicelli noodles). Tasty, chilli and garlicy, this dish is a stand out every time. Steamed live Barramundi in ginger and soy is delicate and profound, and their xo pippis, (which get a mention in another blog) aren't the cheapest in town but highly reliable. Don't come expecting 10/10 fine dining service but the people are friendly and will do their best to please. All in all, I would say the best joint in Ashfield for live seafood, do come down and support this wonderful institution.

Terrible Chinese New Year experience!. Don't usually write negative reviews but this time I feel compelled to share our terrible experience at this restaurant and of all days Chinese New Year eve dinner! Yes, it's a busy service but firstly we were informed that kitchen didn't have prawns and then the worst part is that we had to wait 1.5 hour for a steamed fish to arrive. How hard is it to cook a fish?! We had to sit and wait and remind the staff of our missing fish on a number of occasions all the while tables that arrived after us had been served their meals including fish. When the fish did arrive it was undercooked! I suspect they had forgotten our order and rushed to send out last minute. At that point in time we had decided to give up and call it a night. It just wasn't worth the grief. I know it's not Chinese restaurant practice to comp but it would have been a decent gesture. Definitely not recommending this place and will advise others to do the same.
