Review Cafe Merkama - Ballarat

Amazed to find this cuisine in Ballarat, and glad that it's here! We ordered the tasting plate and the love cake, for two of us it came to just over $50. The food was great, although I didn't know what to expect with the love cake, I didn't really like it after the first bite, however the taste started to grow on me and I finished it off :) Some other reviews say it's not filling and it's too expensive, I don't agree with that at all. I'd been fasting for 20 hours before this meal and felt like I was ready to explode, and $50 for two people is great value! The owner is very friendly as well. Look forward to going back soon.

We ordered a selection to share on the menu and they were all great. Persian love cake was excellent! It'll take a while to order and get your food but that's only because it is one dedicated guy running the whole thing. Worth it in my opinion for a very casual setting with good flavours. Don't expect anything fancy decor wise but expect to leave full, satisfied and with a feeling of value because it is pretty low priced in comparison to other, less delicious options in town!

Merkama is an amazing hidden gem in Ballarat. I stopped by for lunch with my partner and we were greeted with lovely service and complimentary tea (which was super delicious). We ordered the vegan tasting plate, which was super cheap ($22.50 per person) considering it came with 8 dishes and Ethiopian flat bread each. The owner was lovely and the food came quickly, this is definitely the place to go in Ballarat, especially if you are vegan.

Great food, but we receieved portions appropriate for 2 people, to share between 4. Ended up paying $36 per person after we asked for extra food so we didn't leave hungry. Would recommend splitting up if you arrive as a group bigger than 2! The owner is lovely.

We were given a lovely tea to start. The share platter was delicious. We chose beef and chicken with 5 vegetable dishes. The platter came with a soft , light flat bread. We needed a second bread to mop up the lovely servings left in the bowls. This was our second visit and we weren't disappointed.

Such amazing and unique food. Temam who runs it is so passionate about his home culture and food. He is so friendly too. My friends abs I came here while on a trip to Ballarat on recommendation from a friend, so I booked a table for 8 and we all thought it was great.

One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. We went to a fine dining restaurant the night before and this was hands down a better experience. The owner was incredibly friendly and the food was delicious!
