Was there for the Ballarat Vegan Festival lunch today and the food, service and hospitality were outstanding. A dedicated vegan menu and accompanying wine list make this restaurant a destination eatery for vegans living in or visiting Ballarat.

We have had many meals at Brown Grain in Sturt St Ballarat now and is always magnificent. Tonight we went again for my husband and I date night. Our mouths watered with the beautiful tastes of Penang curry and pork, salt and pepper calamari, satay prawns , Thai prawn rice and sweets of deep fried ice cream. Always a warm welcome from Gai and Paula. Tonight was busy, plenty of happy staff to service. Once again thank you Brown Grain. Best restaurant by far. Thanks from Sue & Brett

Ordered a prawn Pad Thai and it was amazing! The sauce was amazing and the prawns were cooked perfectly. A squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of chilli and it was a meal fit for a queen and Iām only talking about their Pad Thai. The lamb in the black pepper was so succulent and juicy. The vegetables were cooked nicely and the flavour was great.
Just terrific , I really enjoyed this place, so much so we stayed on for desserts.Staff are really friendly welcoming and attentive service. Spacious dinning room with a good distance between tables. Dinning room, bathrooms and kitchen looked clean and modern. Food was lovely. Roti was on pointTom Ka with king prawn sweet with a hint of spicy heat. Hangover Marinara was spicy but not overbearing. the calamari ever so tender and the scallop full of flavour. The Grilled lamb had a star anise flavor.Ā Desserts were so yummy, the highlight being the Pandan crepes with coconut ice cream.
Brown grain is good for a quick easy dinner. Service was excellent and the food came out quick, itās pretty basic Thai not very exciting I couldnāt distinguish the difference from all 3 of our dishes the panang curry, red chicken curry and the coco lime prawns tasted good even better with the $5 beers.

Lunched here today at 11:30 am and I chose their Angel Prawns (fresh battered deep fried king prawns with shredded coconut served on a bed of steamed vegetables topped with home-made sweet chilli sauce) for $22.90, it was served steaming hot in just under 15 minutes of time of ordering & the meal was full of flavour. The service provision was attentive & friendly by Nan (even asked twice whether I was happy with the meal). The Thai vocal background music was soothing and at a suitable level to be heard over easily.

This place is a must try if you're visiting Ballarat. Such friendly service and authentic, great tasting Thai food. Best prawn laksa I've had, lots of care put into perfectly cooking the vegetables (not too soft with a bit of crunch), deveining prawns, etc. Well-priced and prompt service considering how busy the restaurant was.
Crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli is delicious. Very good service. Attentive wait staff who checked our order. Allow split bills. Nice wine.

Had a quick lunch here after our trip to sovereign hill, and surprisingly it was tasty. Didnt try their mixed entree but the green curry that i ordered, even tho the sauce is not thick enough, the taste was there, not overly sweet or salty, just nice. Thai and chilli fried rice was nice, has that wok smell (asian will understand what i mean by this) and pad thai was okay. Overall we enjoyed our meal.
Overrated....The food is just average & slightly overpriced for what you get. We had the mixed entree which was a serve of curry puff, satay, fish cake & spring roll. Mains we shared the bbq chicken, duck red curry, pad Thai & fried rice. The duck was very tender. For desserts, we shared the fried ice cream which was a kid pleaser & the pandas crepe with coconut ice cream.
Visited this restaurant while here for work. Chose it based on Zomato review being quite high. I got the Duck special with crispy noodles. It was only ok. Noodles portion that came with it was quite small. I requested some more crispy noodles as they were gone very quickly so didn't have anything else to have the duck with. Sauce was quite overpowering and there wasn't much vegetables - a slice or two of cucumber. Duck is expensive but still think the price was a bit steep for what I got. Staff are helpful and restaurant/atmosphere was nice.
During our visit to Ballarat over the weekend, we got a chance to visit this place. We went without any reservation and the place was full. Though they have a big seating capacity still they were full and busy but luckily we got a space for 2 but only had 45minsas it was pre reserved. We quicly ordered the food and it came within no time. The miced entree was very good but the pirtion was a little less. We ordered satay chicken and pad thai which was very good. Overall we had a good experience and was worth a visit.
Fantastic take away, I recommend the Pad Thai! I regularly get take away from Brown Grain and their meals are of consistently high quality and taste superb! My experience in regard to eating in has been very positive, customer service is fantastic, staff are friendly and attend to you promptly. Prices are reasonable and most of the time you can actually hear one another speak.

On the main esplanade of Ballarat, easy to find and across from the Town Hall. Parking is tricky during the day, much easier for dinner, thanks to the City Council initiative in supporting local small businesses.
The restaurant looks inviting from the outside, bright, neatly set up, clean and big. It can cater more than 100 people easily, could it be the biggest Thai restaurant or any restaurant in Ballarat?
Very hospitable service, friendly, attentive and always making sure that we have everything we need.
On the food side, it was authentic and easy to enjoy. Their massaman beef curry is one of the best that I've ever had anywhere in Australia. Pad Thai, basil stir fry vegetables and the three flavoured fish is above average too. The stir-fry could be a little heavy on the sauce, but okay.

Excellent service, very friendly and attentive. Loved the duck pancakes although the portion size was quite small. Massaman curry had a delicious sauce but the beef tasted a bit bland. The basil and chicken noodles were tasty too, but overindexed on the chunks of onion. Overall, a good experience but on the pricey side.
Had a fantastic dinner on New Year's Eve! The staff were very friendly and food was delicious. Presentation of the food was noticed. Great to share a meal with friends as we could split the bill. Will return.
We drove into Ballarat on New Years Eve evening and were beginning to despair at some desolate streets we walked through as we tried to find dinner. Our eyes lit up when we encountered this place, and if got better from there. We had fish cakes, pad Thai and exquisite BBQ squid. The food was excellent, and our server Georgia was a perfect mix of friendly, helpful and professional.
We enjoyed awesome Thai food which was worth the long wait...they were running a full house on a Monday evening, which says a lot about how popular it is. The Thai green curry was lip smacking, and so were the chilli basil stir fry and noodles. We asked for our food to be "Thai style hot" and weren't disappointed. They have a vegan menu and a kids menu. The prices are great for the quality. Brown Grain is added to our list of favourite Thai restaurants in Australia. We'd love to be back again before we return to Melbourne.

Excellent experience. We were on holiday from Melbourne in Ballarat and looking for a good place to eat. This place is excellent. Big place with plenty of room. Staff were excellent. The waiters were really friendly, professional and give good advice about what to order for a group of 7. The food came out promptly and was delicious. We eat Thai quite a bit and can say it easily was one of the best. A perfect dining experience. Not a single thing to complain about. If you want something super hipster or totally fresh, maybe there is somewhere else. But if you want excellent thai food and good service, this place is highly recommended. We had the Massaman beef, Panang Curry, Soy Ginger and shallot fish, Pad Thai, Laksa and coconut rice. I have traveled to Thailand and this food is easily as good if not better than food I had there.

Nice Restaurant!. The restaurant is peaceful and beautifully decorated. Had dinner for two here tonight, we both had mixed entree, I had Yellow Chicken Curry, hubby had Green Chicken Curry, steamed rice and for dessert we split the black rice pudding. All dishes were lovely, and our waitress was very nice and very attentive.
We will be returning often in the future.

Mixed review... My partner and I went there for dinner on a Friday night and I was not overly impressed with the service. We were waited nearly twenty minutes for a pot of tea and this was with me reminding the waitress. We ordered the duck pancake for starter, which was a disappointment as there was literally one sliver of duck and two mini slices of cucumber in the pancake - definitely not ordering it again. We then had to wait another half hour for our mains. When the mains - Panang chicken, beef chilli basil stir fry and coconut rice finally arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The panang curry was lovely and creamy, it would have been perfect if there were few more chicken pieces. The chilli basil stir fry could have been a bit more spicier however the dish had a nice flavour.
Overall, Brown Grain could have potential if they address the service issues and possibly increase the portions.
Brown Grain Convert. As a diner and long time fan of another Thai restaurant in town I decided to try the Brown Grain......SO glad I did the service was friendly and attentive, to the point when our waitress had finished her shift she made a point of coming to our table to say goodbye. The food was the best Thai I have had for quite a while and while being the last to leave we did not feel pressured to do so. I will definitely be back!!!!
Best Thai in Ballarat. Easily the best Thai in Ballarat. There seems to be a local obsession with Jasmine Thai (a rival restaurant) which I don't understand, as the food here is better quality and the restaurant itself is more pleasant.

LOVELY service. I read the prices wrong online and was confused when I went to pick up the food. The woman was gracious and gave me a free soft drink.
Food itself - impeccable. Licked the bowl clean.
Red curry was spicy and the sauce was incredible. Pad Thai was very authentic. Yummy coconut rice and loved the satay chicken sticks.
Will definitely be going back. Great to see good food in Ballarat.
Fantastic. I went to Brown Grain for the first time last week with my family who are all big thai lovers! The food we had was delicious, with a huge variety to choose from! I am not a spicy food lover and was able to find items on the menu to suit my palette, with my sister in law being a massive spice fan was also able to find something that suited her. the service was quick and exceptionally friendly. We will definitely be back again! It's a shame they don't do weekend lunches.

1st Time @ Brown Grain Ballarat. Having previously dined in at the Warrnambool store we needed to try our home store in Ballarat. Just finished a take away & it was delish!
Spring rolls super crisp & fresh. Loved the home-made sweet chilli sauce.
Satay prawns with flat rice noodle is THE best we've ever had...not too sweet like some satay sauces & lots of peanuts.
Massaman Curry had a lovely flavour but the potatoes didn't work...I think it was the wrong type of potato.
Final dish was Cashew chicken in a chilli jam with flat rice noodle was very flavoursome. Love it you get some vegetables (broccoli, carrot, onion & baby corn) not just huge chunks of onion with nothing else.
Staff are super super friendly & nothing is too much of a problem.

Delicious Thai Food. The food at Brown Grain Thai is absolutely delicious, and comes across very clean and fresh. I ordered the pumpkin curry, which is packed full of vegetables and a delicious sauce. I've tried the tofu and chicken version of it and have to say the latter is much better.

The food here is fresh and light. The flavours are nicely balanced and well defined. The chicken with basil and chilli was fragrant and the vegetables perfectly cooked. Attentive friendly service. Prices pretty much the same as the other Thai places on this street. All in all the best Thai food in Ballarat by quite a long way.

Had perfectly cooked Curry Puffs, excellent fresh chilli used in the green beef curry and the chicken chilli basil stir fry was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back here again. Next time will dine in and showcase this treasure to friends from Melbourne.
