A little gem in Balmain. Lovely atmosphere, and very tasty Greek food. We chose the banquet and were not disappointed.
The belly dancing show added some entertainment and certainly made it a memorable evening.

I chosen Sofie's because my son and his wife went there and recommended. I am glad I did for something different to celebrate my birthday. We had banquet and they were fresh and yummy. Service was superb and the hostess was very polite, sincere and making sure that we are happy and comfortable. Sofie's put on a Greek dance show which was delightful to watch and also you can participated to join in. Lots of fun.
All dishes we ordered were really flavoursome. Traditional must-have options, really well presented. My personal fav is the veggie moussaka. A great place, where you receive a family-like welcome from the owner to top off the great service and atmosphere. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed our Staff Christmas dinner event at Sofie’s. There was plenty of home style Greek food that was delicious. The owners were lovely and very accommodating. Will definitely go back!
We had an awesome birthday celebration for my wifes birthday 2 weeks ago at Sofies. It was our first time back since we lived in Balmain having enjoyed some great greek meals there in the past. Sofie and the team sure know how to host and make everyone feel welcome. We did the banquet with about 16 people and everyone loved it and had a night to remember - so much food, great value & great quality. Would be rude to single out a dish as they were all great. Sofie is quite a character & as her restaurant there is a personal touch to everything....right down to Sofie offering to take photos and email them to you. Thanks Sofie! Highly recommended for both a small or large gathering.
Super good, I had vegetarian moussaka. The first time, very impressed. Also got some complimentary tasty turkish delights. One of the best kept secrets in Balmain, Worth a visit. Staff super friendly. Can't fault it. Will return.

If you are looking for authentic Greek food, look no further than Sofie's Greek restaurant in Balmain! The food was absolutely amazing, the lamb melted in your mouth and the homemade Dolmades were delicious! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the service was fantastic!

What an amazing restaurant!!!! It had a really authentic and homely atmosphere and was very inviting!! The staff are super friendly and welcoming.
The food was just delicious! For entree we got a fig and spinach salad (a special), grilled octopus and fried squid. All were sooo divine. For mains we got the slow-roasted lamb shoulder (heaven!), the eggplant stack and chicken skewers. For dessert we ordered the baklava. I have to say that I did not enjoy the baklava as it was very dry and not sweet at all, so it tasted a bit bland. However, all the entrees and mains were fantastic.
All the food came out really quick, but after we finished everything and the plates were cleared, we sat for a long while until they approached us with a dessert menu.
Anyway, this restaurant is amazing and I will definitely be back very soon!!! :)
Fantastic food and atmosphere!!We were personally greeted by the owner Sophie, she was warm & welcoming and made us feel at feel at home.The food was undoubtedly incredible and was authentic Greek food which in Sydney is so hard to find!Anyone looking for an affordable flavorsome meal in an intimate atmosphere I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sophie's Greek restaurant, will definitely be back!
We dine at Sofie's regularly. They have delicious authentic Greek food & Sofie & Peter are wonderful hosts. We love the quieter week nights, but this is a great place for celebrations. Would recommend anytime.

Sofie's is the BEST Greek restaurant in Sydney - simple as that. This is not fake Greek food, this is the real thing. The food is clean, fresh, full of authentic flavour and exceptional value. Where else in Sydney can you find exceptional mains in the mid-$20's? The lamb kleftiko falls off the bone it is so well cooked and is melt in your mouth. The salad of fresh figs, crumbed fetta, spinach leaves and pomegranate is seriously to die for. The staples of moussaka, pastitsio and lamb on the skewer are there, but so too is dolmades (the best vine leaves you will ever have had), grilled haloumi (or even haloumi and mint bread), calamari, chicken, fish and a range of mouth-watering deserts including home-made baklava, baked and caremelised figs and galaktabouriko (baked semilina custard with crispy filo pastry and syrup). The owners Peter and Sofie, as well as the room itself are so warm and welcoming, this really is a can't miss. We've been coming for years and we have never been disappointed. This is a true hidden gem - for value, quality and a taste of true restaurant quality Greek food, you can't do better outside Greece itself.

I also love the Pastitsio the Greek version of Lasagne only milder in taste but just as delicious.Slowly going through the menu and intend to taste everything on offer eventually.Love the lighting, decor and friendly, family atmosphere.

Recommended! We went with a group of 8 and got the banquet. Everything was great and the service was great. It's a small restaurant and feels homely. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. Will be going there again!
The best part about the banquet was the restaurant catered to the amount of people we had. As we had 7 people, the servings all came as one for each person. Not like some restaurants we have been to before and we had to split a tiny ball so everyone got a share. Peter was a very nice waiter/host and even catered to my seafood allergic boyfriend and substituted spinich and ricotta filo pastry for the calamari.
Went to Sofie's last night with a group of 8. We couldn't decide on what to eat because everything looked amazing on the menu so we had banquet 3. With every dish that came out, we couldn't stop devouring into it. The atmosphere was fun and vibrant and Sofie was such a lovely and amazing host. She made us feel so welcome and it made our dinner so much more enjoyable. All the dishes were so good we didn't only just have a favorite! Would recommend this place and will definitely be back some time soon.
Sofie's Greek Restaurant. I organised with Sofie's to have my wife's 60th birthday at the restaurant. In the end we had a party of 39 people. Throughout the preparation Sofie went out of her way to make the process easy and the night a success. The banquet we ordered which included everything was fantastic and by the end of the night everyone was stuffed. Sofie was a terrific hostess catering to everyone's individual needs and the night went off without a hitch. I would recommend Sofie's to anyone and can't thank Sofie enough for her assistance.

Great family run restaurant. Fantastic service teamed with incredible Greek dishes. Dishes were traditional with modern twists for example the moussaka came with sweet potato chips on top. Really nice finish. All presentation was beautiful. We'd definitely return for Greek food
Delicious!. I chose Sofie's after reading all the rave reviews on Urbanspoon and Eatability. It did not disappoint at all. The food was definitely the best Greek I have tasted and the service was fabulous. We (4 of us) had the banquet and there was plenty of food - they do offer what was left to put it in a takeaway container at the end of the evening. The Greek salad was a stand out - such a simple dish but oh so fresh and the Haloumi with caramelised onion was delicious. The great service extended to Sofie taking a photo of our table (she takes a photo of each table before they leave) and sends it to you via email - a nice personal touch. Will definitely be back.
Superb on all fronts. From the attentive and polite service to the fresh cocktails and lovingly prepared cuisine, this place is amazing all around. My fiancée and I found this gem on urban spoon, and in one meal it has earned a spot at the top of our list of favorite restaurants. We will definitely be back. Try the beautifully prepared and fresh Greek salad, perfectly prepared chilli bread and delicious spanakopita. Then, top off your meal with one of their exquisite main courses. We had the stuffed chicken and lamb skewers. The overall experience and attention to detail from our server was simply immaculate.
Delightful food, attentive hosts. Can't wait to return to Sofie's Greek Restaurant. I am still dreaming about the pumpkin, fresh fig, baby spinach leaves, pomegranate seeds and feta salad. Saganaki prawns (did I count 10?) succulent king prawns in a rich tomato sauce dotted with feta. My son enjoyed the lightly floured calamari with aioli (so, so tender) and the chicken breast stuffed with pine nuts and a basil pesto melted in his mouth. Not that we needed dessert but just had to share the semolina slice topped with crisp filo, two scoops of vanilla icecream with fresh passionfruit. My son particularly enjoyed the Greek beer. Even though Sofie's was packed on the Friday night Sofie and Peter were discreetly checking on us to make sure we remained content. We'll just have to return and work our way through the menu as there was so much we wanted to try. Thank you both for a truly wonderful evening.

A fusion of modern greek and traditional greek cuisine with a moorish twist. The traditional yet relaxing ambience of this restaurant was quite different to other greek restaurants that i have been to. the layout of the menu is very easy to read and the food on offer is quite unique yet still transports you to a quiet fishing village on an unspoilt island in greece.i have been to sofies restaurant 25 years ago and coming back again i feel she is just as charismatic and you instantly feel at home..being a family run business the food on offer is delicious and well prepared with fresh ingredients. sofie thank you for an amazing culinary journey back to where my heritage lies and for that santorini sunset cocktail !!!!!!

I came to Sofie's Greek two Saturday nights in a row. Friendly staff, fantastic service and the food speaks for itself. The lamb shoulder is excellent.
We won a voucher at a charity event for dinner at Sofie's, didn't know what to expect but LOVED it. Peter the owner was a formidable host, the food was delicious and the ambience perfect. We will be back (with a tableful of friends this time) for sure.
Went there last night and the food was just as good as the first time we went. You can tell the owners are passionate about what they do. Would definitely recommend it.

Superb. Stopped here on Sat 15th Feb with 5 friends, chose the banquet for the table $50ish pp. Absolutely superb, each dish was fantastic in it is own right but highlights were the haloumi and fig combo and the lamb - just fell off the bone and tasted awesome. Ashamed to say have live close by for so long but never ventured in but will be making it a regular venue from now, highly recommend. Thanks to host Peter for a great night.

Best Greek in Sydney!. Tonight was our third visit to Sophie's, and we were yet again blown away by the amazing food and friendly service. Sophie's is owned by a lovely husband & wife team, who are both very welcoming, friendly and eager to please. The food is seriously AMAZING! We have ordered the sirloin beef wrapped in filo pastry, complete with a creamy mushroom sauce and sun dried tomatoes every time, and we are still lost for words about how delicious it is, I have never had anything like it. The lamb shoulder and eggplant stack is also fabulous! We will definitely be dining here on the reg, best Greek food in Sydney!
As a new resident of Rozelle/Balmain I have been slowly exploring restaurants on Darling St/ Balmain and can honestly say the service and the food at Sofie's is an absolute standout. If you want a great experience coupled with amazing flavours and a unique menu this is the place to come! Great for couples or group dinners with great music

Went to check out Sofies last Saturday night and i can definately say that i will be going back. We had the banquet and everything was full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Peter and Sofie and all the staff for that matter made us feel very welcome and they are great hosts. The level of genuine customer service is second to none and along with a menu that will have your tastebuds working overtime, this is a must for any sydney siders looking for quality greek cuisine.
It was a peaceful place with a very welcoming staffs. Specially its owner. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends and who want a delicious greek food and Rokotta in high quality and reasonable price.
My fiancé and I just had an absolutely lovely dinner at Sofie's. The host was so generous and passionate about the food it made us step out of our comfort zones. The food was absolutely beautiful from the spinach pie to the chargrilled calamari to the melt in your mouth slow cooked lamb. We were highly impressed for a romantic dinner for us both. Will be recommending around town and going back ourselves.

Just like a (real) Greek restaurant!. I've lived in Greece as an Aussie interloper - this restaurant could be there. It's not all about being a good foodie restaurant so much - seems more about the authentic, good natured, human touch with authentic food, humour and a fair bit of love. I really like the relaxed vibe, the way the staff interact with patrons with genuine humour and interest, the way they will party at the slightest excuse, and yes, the food is very Greek too. Grilled Octopus delicious, the Taramasalata excellent, retsina highly quaffable but not strong enough for my pine loving taste buds. Sofia and her husband are delightfully different, and make you feel welcome and comfortable. It's good to watch their humourous moves. A nice night out where you are never sure what will happen - and it's full of Greek people! Isn't that the best recommendation?
Food was actually really good & Sofie herself booked us in & sat her down. Service is not the best..although I am from Melvourne. Had the dips & bread with calamari and sesame Salmon. Nothing remarkable but pretty good nonetheless.

GREAT. I went to sofies over the weekend after hearing good things from my neighbours.. Had the best night great service and in good timing.. Sofie is such a laugh and her husband was busy mixing up his own little cocktails for us to try.. There was a belly dancer on later in the evening which was great fun if you have the confidence to get up and dance.. the food was fantastic we ordered the banquet menu between 6 of us was very filling and delicious.. we all had a great evening would highly recommend this restraurant!
Food is delicious but the service is really bad. We waited over half an hour for a desert menu that never came. The owner seemed more interested in taking photos & discussing her other businesses than looking after her customers. It's a shame, because the food is great.

Delicious food; service needs to catch up. I went in a group of 5 on a Friday evening. We were the first table to order but still waited an extremely long te for our food. 2 of us shared a mixed plate - dips, olives, meat balls, spanakopita and bread - very tasty, although they got the order wrong, bringing dips/bread only, with the rest following 15 mins later. A friend had dolmades which she said were some of the best she'd ever had We waited over an hour for the mains. When they finally arrived they were really tasty - between us we had moussaka, Greek salad, kebabs and spatchcock. The spatchcook only arrived after the rest of us had finished eating - and then it was undercooked and missing the accompanying beans. We were offered complimentary after dinner drink and a small discount as compensation. The host was friendly, apologetic and clearly embarrassed - the restaurant was clearly still going through teething problems only 3 weeks after opening. BUT despite the sketchy service, unacceptably long delays and many mistakes, I will return (pobably on a quieter week night) - the food was fresh, delicious and good value - and very authentic according to the Greek member of our party.

Not Too Shabby. Went there again for the 2nd time in 2 weeks & really enjoyed it (perhaps not quite as good as Perama in Petersham, but hey...we can walk to Sofie's). As with our previous visit we a table of 4 so shared the entrees & had individual mains. Out of the entrees we've had I'd recommend the Spanikopita triangles (so fresh!), Grilled Haloumi Cheese & the Greek Octopus (yummy tender). The lamb meatballs aren't too bad either. We've tried the Deep-Fried Whitebait & we'd give it just an OK (nice enough but we've had better elsewhere - however, we may giveit another go next time we go as they've changed chefs [see comment further below on this] since we had the whitebait.
To me the outstanding dish is their Lamb Kleftiko - melt in your mouth lamb with various vegies swimming in a light sauce which is served wrapped up in a baking paper parcel which they cut open at the table - the aromas just erupt out when they open it up - 3 of us ordered it. The Stifado (Rabbit Pie) is also good; the Moussaka was average & served in a bowl (seemed an odd way of serving it). They have a couple of nice desserts too - if you have room left.
They are BYO, the service is friendly, the A/C is cool (perfect for a steamy Summer evening) & the window seats give you a nice overview of the Darling St. street-life. My only concern (& it's not about the food) is that they're onto their 2nd chef since their recent opening & the service was chaotic this last nite we were there - people who ordered before us were just getting their entrees as we were finishing ours, many tables were obviously waiting quite a while to get some food on their table & some of the diners were getting a bit stressed out over it (understandably). Mine affable host (Peter) was doling out free aperitifs left, right & centre by way of apology for the slow service from the kitchen, but I'm sure some folks won't come back because of this - we most definitely will though! The food was great - let's just hope they can get the kitchen running smoothly.
