I came here on Wednesday night for the first time & it reignited my love for pho!
My friends & I ordered a plate of BBQ chicken rice paper rolls & all had beef pho.
The rolls were nice, but the star of the show was the pho! The beef was tender - not chewy & the broth was delicious. I tend to add a decent amount of chilli & hoisin which seemed to elevate it to a new level, it was just delicious! Can't wait to go back.
Tucked away in an arcade in Balmain, New Star has the best Pho in Sydney, delicious soup without MSG, lots of meat and big serving. Casual and friendly service. Highly recommended!

A great place for good value and tasty food. It is not posh - it feels like a cafe in a Thai backstreet -but has atmosphere, efficient service and a good menu.
Fast, friendly and cheap! Best vietnamese in Balmain. I have been going here once a week for dinner for years. Try the savoury pancake or braised beef vermicelli.
Always love coming to this place for a fast, reliable & well priced dinner. We shared San Choy Bau ($8.50) - two cups of crisp lettuce with crackly noodles & pork mince; salt & pepper calamari ($16.50)- calamari tossed in chilli, onion flakes, salt & pepper with thinly cut carrots & shallots; large special fried rice ($8).
Can't believe we've only discovered this gem after a year in the neighbourhood. Great taste, value, price, and variety. They also deliver!!
This is the best priced restaurant for quality and portions in the Balmain Peninsula. I cannot stress enough how good New Star is. Its not winning any Michelin hats but it will win your heart and your return business. Get around it.
Amazeballs. First time trying this place got home delivery was quick delicious fresh absolutely devine food highly recommend it....a must try small little shop that you wouldn't see or think to try but do
I’m so excited! Newstar Takeaway is a short stroll from my house and it’s my favourite type of establishment. Cheep, cheerful, and Vietnamese. Newstar Takeaway Pho The broth was quite strong on the beef and less nuanced in flavour, but the Bo Tai was tender and delicious. The serve was massive and I couldn’t get through it. I loved the table trimmings – classic box of tissues, hoisin, soy, pepper and utensils galore. The background music was instrumental – the only missing element was a television or two! Cold rolls / Rice paper rolls I love some tasty cold rolls, though served with the sweet/chilli sauce and not the usual thick, hoisin based sauce. Combination Rice The combination rice was decent but not overly exciting. Tasty pork but was a little dry, nice meat loaf, and the pork skin noodles were a little different to what I’m used to. A nice simple dish. Overall, this was a great meal at a price on par with my favourite pho establishments in Adelaide, but around the corner in Balm
Love this hole in the wall place!! Fast, fresh and friendly, the Thai beef salad is stupidly good (I struggle to order anything else; possibly the best TBS in Sydney?) and the rice paper rolls are always perfect. Great pho and noodle soups too.
This is definitely one you need to add to your regular list if you're a local.
Dinner for one. Definitely a good choice for someone who lives alone and wants a rounded meal at a decent price. This place owns Le Tonkin (which is down the street) both in terms of cooking and price. The restaurant itself is rather shabby but definitely bearable; otherwise just order take-away.
I had the beef pho. Being of Vietnamese descent myself, I believe it was cooked well enough.
Best Pho in Australia. My wife and I eat at Newstar whenever we get the chance. Five years ago we discovered Newstar through a friend and felt in love with their Pho (Vietnamese rare beef noodle soup). As a Korean living in Sydney Australia, I have been eating Pho for nearly 20 years. I have tried Pho in Melbourne and Brisbane. I have been to Vietnam and tried Pho in big cities like Saigon and small cities like Hoi An. I have even tried Pho in Korea which I would not call Pho as it is a very poor imitation. But the Pho at Newstar is something special and I reckon it is all in their rich flavoured soup. Go and have their spring rolls for entree, and their salt and pepper squid or pork ribs compliments Pho well. Their cheap pricing is just the icing on the cake and they don't use MSG in their food.
Full of Character. This Food establishment is cosy and genuine. A beautiful relic of Asian foodening. Don't miss out on this and human taste slice of vietnam. Recommended for affordable and wholesome meals.
Tucked away from the street inside a lane way in a shopping centre this is a lovely Asian restaurant serving well priced meals and generous portions.
The menu is largely Vietnamese with a bit of Thai and Malaysian thrown in. They have starters, soups, salads and a variety of main courses. I had the pho and it was excellent. Fragrant broth that packed a punch :-) spring rolls were nice too. At $12 for a pho it’s probably the most reasonably priced without compromising taste ;-)
Happily come here any day :-)

I'm sitting right here eating a bowl of bun cha and cannot believe it's taken me a year to discover New Star. Amazing food. Fresh, delicious and ridiculously cheap! Friendly service too. With so few non-thai Asian options in Balmain, I'm so happy to have found this place!
Friendly service, good food and variety if dishes. Would definitely go back. Only thing stopping me from 5 out of 5 is that the tables aren't always clean. Little things matter. I'll definitely be back.
I had the best experience with New Star! I ordered delivery and the service was great!
The vegetables spring rolls are the best I've ever tried! I'll definitely be ordering those again.
I also had a Pad Thai which was loaded with chicken and vegetables and so tasty. It was huge so I even have leftovers for tomorrow! Great food, great value for money and great service.
Thanks again, New Star legends, you totally made my night! 😊
