We were really well looked after by the wait staff and the food was excellent. Plenty of pizza choices and a variety of pastas, we really enjoyed this restaurant!
The best pizzas in a chill setting.
We hosted my son's first here and had such a fantastic experience. They managed everything efficiently. Staff were extremely accommodating with all of our requests including turning up before their opening time to add some small decorations. They weren't at all fazed by the amount of people or children we had in our group and knew to swap dishes between each end of the table. All we had to do was turn up, select a few pizzas and pasta and they handled the rest. They took the initiative to cater for the children with hot chips in addition to the antipasti, something we hadn't requested but were happy with.
Not to mention how tasty all of the dishes were. We highly recommend Birichino.
Lovely Pizza, Poor Gnocchi
I had dinner last Friday and the pizza was perfect as always..with fresh ingredients and being served very quickly as I had a little baby..so excellent experience..staff was very friendly
Amazing, beautiful pizza. I suggest to start with the Tarfuto, but I didn’t hear any complaints from anyone in our large group. Will be back to try more! I only wish it was a little easier to have conversation as it was quite loud inside.
This is a great restaurant. Lovely food, fantastic service. Reasonably priced and comfortable relaxed atmosphere. This has become one of my favourite places to eat.
We ordered potato and ham croquettes, rocket and pear salad, Birichino pizza, ragu gnocchi and potato fries. I have no complaints about the quality, presentation or flavour of the food. Simply perfect! They made a salad taste great!
Service was super friendly and the place was spotlessly clean. It was on the pricier end and for my picky family members, we were limited to a small selection. Window seating was great for the kids to do some tram spotting.
I just love Birichino, the people that work there are so nice. I once saw they feed this homeless man, who was deaf, which is so nice. Their food is even better, mainly their pizzas, but they have a very large menu as well.
The gnocchi here is to die for. One of the lightest, and most well made gnocchi I’ve had, served in a lovely ragu. I’ve read the reviews praising their home made pasta. I would agree that these are a highlight of the menu.
Had dinner here last night. Delicious authentic Italian restaurant. Probably the best authentic carbonara I’ve had in ages. Service was ok. We ordered pastas and pizzas, loved both but we found the meat and vegetables on the pizzas a bit scarce. Overall was a great experience.
Good heavens, the food here was top notch. We got a garlic pizza, a couple of pastas, and a tiramisu and everything was delicious. Probably the best carbonara I’ve had in a while. Definitely worth a visit.

Birichino is certainly one of the best places one can have pizza or pasta at, in Melbourne. Featuring a relatively extensive menu of delicious food, from appetisers to dessert, including a specials board, it has been one of my favourite places to dine at, being a local resident. Food has always been ridiculously good, with excellent service, and the only drawback being not being able to get a table without a reservation on some nights, which makes adhoc dining in not easily achievable. Guess that attests to how popular Birichino is.
Latest visit- had the 4 cheese pizza, the special pizza of the day (which was seriously good), and the carbonara. We started off with the arancini balls and croquettes, and finally capped off a fantastic feast with a delightful panna gotta and an excellent tiramisu.
I came here with a few of my friends for Sunday lunch after a recommendation from an Italian work colleague and the place did not disappoint. The restaurant for a Sunday lunch wasn't super busy and we didn't feel rushed at all (if anything, we stayed around for 30 minutes to continue talking) and everyone's food absolutely looked amazing. I had the Tagliatelle Porcini and Tartifo - amazing pasta - although the truffle flavour didn't really come out. My friends really enjoyed their meals too - they Tagliatelle al Ragu, and the Tagliatelle with seafood (so much seafood too!) and the Margherita with buffalo mozzarella. Worth checking out if you are in the neighbourhood or you just really want great homestyle italian.

The food is first Class and the ambience is traditional Italian.
Reasonable value and Byo.

The food was fantastic...The first time we had a resentful waitress who made a face every time she was called to the table. Still decided to go back for the food. It was two of us and come 7.30pm, we were asked to LEAVE!! Half the rest was empty but we were asked to vacate our table when we asked for more drinks!! Honestly, it was shocking customer service
Now this place is amazing! Service is excellent. Atmosphere is great and the food well let's just say it never disappoints! Pizzas are exactly like they make in Italy, pasta is fresh with fresh produce and the desserts are excellent! My favourite pizzeria in Balwyn 👍🏼

There are very friendly waiters and waitresses.
The food is very good, that reflects the Italian tradition.
I suggest you go to Birichino and choose from a lovely selection of Italian and Australian wines.

I went to this place last Thursday with 5 more friends. We told the lovely waitresses that we had a movie to go to and they were very nice and efficient. We all ordered pizzas. I ordered the "sfiga". Easily the best pizza I had in Melbourne. All my friends were equally impressed and agreed that all pizzas were fantastic. They were also very accommodating with one vegetarian friend who requested a change on a pizza. Will definitely go back!

The restaurant looks great from outside and inside. The waitress was lovely. Menu looks amazing, and foods came out pretty quickly. We had Sicilian pizza which I love the bread, nice and fluffy. All foods looks very home made. We also had zucchini fritters with pesto which was okay, and baked baby octopus which came out with a lot of tomato based sauce which made it look more like a stew. Sauce tasted just okay, octopus was cooked well. So from this experience, I guess the pizza was really good, while sides were kinda disappointing since it sounds better on the menu than it really is. Anyway, will come back for other things.

One of the best pasta and pizza joints - italian at its best! We love the scarmoza with porcini and homemade pasta, also porcini because we love it! Great selection of pizza and sides which never fails. Amazing service and they will suit your needs so its definitely a plus
Belinda and I ate dinner here tonight. We hadn't reserved a table but luckily we were able to get one anyway. I had perused the menu during work so I already had a shortlist of dishes in mind. We ordered a mushroom pizza and homemade gnocchi with Sicilian ragu. I was surprised how quickly the food came out. My gnocchi was the best gnocchi I've ever eaten. Every gnocchi I've had before this was trash compared to the pillowy gems of Birichino. The mushroom pizza was woodfire oven cooked and very authentic. I loved the thin base and simplicity of the topping.
The service was warm, friendly and helpful. Also, our waiter was really cute.

We had a wonderful dinner on saturday night and cannot fault anything. The entrees were amazing and plentiful, (we ordered an antipasto called "a modo mio") the mains ridiculously on song, just delicious, ( I ordered the rack of lamb chosen by "the special of the night" my husband home made tagliatelle with porcini and truffle and my children gnocchi with ragù) the desert wonderful, we ordered "sfingi alla ricotta" a sort of donuts filled with ricotta! Absolutely to try! The food here is special! Cooked with italian love and passion! And a very good selection of wines too! We'll definitely come back!
Had a lovely dinner here! I don't get to Balwyn often so it's nice to know there is somewhere reliable I can go to for a decent pizza that doesn't require me to drive into the city or Brunswick. It's not 400 gradi but it ain't bad either.
Enjoyed the pizza here. Prosciutto and mozzarella. But it was a bit expensive $25. The lasagne wasn't as good. The layers weren't separated with sauce - just pasta on pasta with a layer of meat sauce laddled on top with a sprinkle of cheese. Will try something else next time. The service was adequate, but it wasn't busy for a Thursday evening. I would go back.

We had a lovely night in this nice restaurant .. The food was amazing .. We had mix of italian appetizer to share. After I had a beautiful seafood spaghetti al cartoccio, they were just sublime and to finish I had the best tiramisu i ever had in my life ... The service was really good and friendly .. The food is always exceptional and I love that it is run by Italians. There is a great wine list. The pizza is wildfired, and all the ingredients are authentic... Especially love the " Diavolla" with njua... It's the best.. They are always busy which indicates that they have got the perfect formula . It is not a big restaurant , so you may need to wait, but it is worth it. It's great to have a slice of Italy in Balwyn. Thank you Birchino.
We had a beautiful meal here this evening. Staff were friendly and charming. It was clearly very busy which is an indication they are well patronised by locals, so for the critics be patient, it's worth the wait!

Tried many famous pizza places in Melbourne ( 400 Gradi, Ladro, DOC etc), this is by far my favourite for now.
I ordered Capoliverese pizza which is pumpkin on white sauce, with goat cheese , mushroom & rocket. The crust is superb, thin & crusty base with slight puffed up edges but still with the soft centre. The amount of ingredients are just at the right balance and this is the first time I had juicy flavoursome mushroom instead of dried up one on a pizza. Happy with service, price is reasonable given for its location and quality of ingredients. Came on Thursday night , will definitely come back on weekend to check the consistency.Top notch.
I didn't know how good pizza could be until I tasted the real thing in Napoli a few years ago. I fell in love with it.... Birichino's pizza is the closest I've had to that in Australia. fantastic ingredients executed to perfection. Top that with fantastic service... I just wish it was closer to home.
Word of warning, if you're expecting your typical takeaway pizza with shredded ham, then don't even come here unless you're open to true pizza!

Not sure what all the bad reviews are about. Service was fantastic even with it being busy. Had the special, seafood marinara. Tasted fantastic. Pizza's also looked very nice. Would go back.

I'm Italian, I live in NYC and I have to say the pizza at Birichino's is outstanding. I had the pizza Babbo which was superb. Desserts and antipastos (tagliere) are good too and the manager is quite entertaining.

I have been to Birichino several times and I find that the food is great, the pizza is one of the best in Melbourne, the atmosphere is homy but sophisticated and you can have the real Italian experience! Well done guys, you are one of my favourite spots!
One of the best seafood I have had in a long time. The fish carpaccio was outstanding as were the fish lasagna. Very light and crispy the frittura mista, fortunately I was invited and didn't read the negative reviews below, either they have changed chef and fish providore or are amazingly inconsistent, I'll check in again VERY soon and confirm my 4.5

Interesting reading the negative reviews below. Went here for dinner and ordered two pizzas and the potato croquettes. The croquettes were a little underwhelming as they weren't served with any sort of sauce so they were a little bland.
The pizzas were of very good quality and had a good balance of toppings. The bases were cooked very well. They were a little bit thinner than I would have liked, but that is more of a personal preference than anything else. The servings were adequate without being too large or small.
The decor inside is nice and simple without being spartan. Service is a little terse but they kept us well provided with water and the food was brought out quickly. Overall, a pleasant experience.
Held our daughter's confirmation party at Birichino on Sunday night - 31 guests in total.With 6 Italian nonni (grandparents) present, together with our other guests who have a fine appreciation of good quality Italian food, my husband and I could not have been more delighted with the outcome!We started with ultra fresh antipasto, followed by the most delicious variety of pizza ever, then pasta (incl. gnocchi) and then a variety of chicken and meat dishes. So good that we made a booking at the end of our meal for the following week! What a find. A party of 10 were extremely satisfied with basic Italian dishes such as "nonna's lasagne" which made everyone feel right at home. The pizza was delicious, and the customer service was fantastic. Only minor criticism was that the food could have been slightly hotter. Other than that, highly recommend

A great new find in our neighborhood. Birichino are serving wonderful Italian food, pizza and pasta in a warm and cosy setting. Well priced, delicious and tasty and a small but impressive wine list will keep us coming back for more. A welcome addition to North Balwyn.
Been here tonight and was really impressed! Joined a group of friends and we started with some antipasto and focaccia, and it was a great surprise! Very authentic Italian pancetta,tasty mortadella and great pecorino cheese! The waiter was absolutely great! Very attentive and described us all of the specials! My partner went for the "tagliata" steak and the presentation was as outstanding as the amazing flavor of it.
I had a Reginella pizza and it was very nice too, the buffalo mozzarella on the top was authentic just as well.

Yesterday I had a great seafood pasta...cooked perfectly and well presented..the ingredient were fresh and very tasty..the service was fast and they were very friendly...I would definitely recommended to try the seafood pasta...always ask for the dish of the day...my friend has a delicious octopus..very tender.one of my favourite place in Melbourne..Grazie Birichino..

Dropped in last night for a quick meal. The place was full and had a good buzz. We were seated near the pizza prep area and observed the dough being hand stretched before being cooked (considering myself an amateur pizza aficionado I was impressed). Salt cod fritters were very good, still with some bite and salt in the chunky fish flesh. Pizzas were very good. The prosciutto and burratta a favourite as was the broccolini, chilli and salsicce (sausage). Wine list all reasonably priced. Will definitely return.

This place is authentic. All the way down to the staff. You know when the waiting staff are conversing with the chefs in Italian you've struck the real deal. Amazing pizza, great italian cheeses, and a tasty selection of pasta. Grilled eggplant rolled with goats cheese and Napoli sauce for $14. A full size margherita pizza for the kids is only $16... Prices are reasonable here - don't bother going into Carlton!
Also a decent wine list with nice reds and whites starting at $32. I remember the run down gift shop occupying this space for many years. They have totally transformed the place into a slice of Southern Italy. This is my new local and I will be back!

They had a really good pizza and decent calamari, though I wish the calamari had a better dipping sauce than what tasted like just mayo, or if it had more seasonings, it was too plain.
The staff were super friendly and helpful when we asked for things.
Good atmosphere in the restaurant but their toilet did not have baby changing facilities which was inconvenient for our family.

As you enter the place you are welcomed by a magnificent setting, Sitting in any table you have a wonderful view of the workshop-like kitchen where you can see the chef cooking and the ”pizzaiolo” making pizzas.
The menu offers a wide variety of starters, pizzas, pastas, dessert and everyone be satisfied. I had the white tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and sausages which is very tasty, and I had an amazing pizza with very good taste, cooked perfect and with a fantastic presentation. If you come you need absolutely to try their cannoli, pannacotta and tiramisù which are the perfect dessert after an excellent dinner, all again freshly home made.To finish my dinner I tried their coffee martini which is a perfect combination of a good espresso mixed with the particular flavour of the Martini which was exquisite!!!
All the products were fresh and the dishes are all home-made. The chefs takes great care in selecting the best quality ingredients. The restaurant also caters for all tastes by providing a large selection of the best wines of the region and of course from Italy too! the owner and all the amazing staff is always around willing to exchange some kind words with all her clients, smiling and make you feel being home.
I had a pleasant dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavours. For this reason I highly recommend going to this restaurant!!
Birichino has some of the best authentic style pizzas I've ever had. Their Tartufo and Babbo pizzas are definitely the two best in my opinion, with the Tartufo being my absolute favourite - an earthy and umami delight with buffalo mozzarella to bring a well rounded balance of flavours together. Their homemade gnocchi is fluffy and delicious, with my favourite being the four cheese - the ragu sauce needs a touch more of salt (and maybe some porcini mushrooms). These dishes are best shared as flavours can become overwhelming if an entire dish is eaten to one person.
Of all the Pizzas I have tried so far in MEL this is undoubtedly the best!
Wood fired, authentic South Italy style and great taste.
