Review Satguru's - Balwyn

Marco van der Velde
The place looks a bit run down, but the food was actually quite tasty with good flavours for affordable prices. Don't expect much hospitality though when using a Groupon voucher.

Nice service. Meat cooked really well, soft and tasty. Rice also very nice. But the problem is source is too salty. Pansenda is really nice. But Vindaloo is too salty. Also spinach fried entree is also too salty. A little bit pity.

I love this place. The food has great flavour and the owners are lovely. the curries are great and if you haven't tried Indian flavours on a pizza now is your chance. Yum. One other thing I love about this place is, I take my dog as there are two tables outside.

Went to the restaurant because of a $29 scoopon for two people. The amount of food we got for 2 people was insane!! It was also beautiful food! He was a bit awkward at first I think because of the scoopon, I can't imagine they were making much on it. But we ordered some drinks and naan to make up for it and to say thanks for the great service hthe staff were awesome and we made sure to show how appreciative we were of such a fantastic deal.

If there is a chance for giving 0 stars definitely I would have done that first. The customer service is really bad. I got an offer from the group on app from the play store. When i showed them the offer they was like they are giving the food for free. And have to eat whatever they give. All the Currys tasted the same. At the same time the way they behave to other Aussie customers which was instore was entirely different. This itself shows the discrimination they show to Indians.

Can confidentially say that this was the worst dining experience I have ever had. My girlfriend and I went here and used the $29 Groupon deal. Firstly the customer service was terrible, our meals took 1 hour to arrive and the couple that sat beside us had there’s within 30 minutes (exactly the same dinner meal). All of our food was cold, we did not get a choice of which vegetable curry we would like (you are supposed to get to pick?) and we only received 1 serve of rice when you are supposed to get 2? Last but not least we decided not to get the desert as the food gave me the worst stomach pains I have ever had in my life, and we were still over charged for our meal. This probably sounds like I am being picky however I am an easy to please customer and I regret even paying them in the end, would give a lower rating if possible.

I don't understand how people can rate this any less than five stars. The traditional naan bread is the litmus test for the rest of the menu. I'm writing this review as a silent appreciation. It's so nice to know that there's authentic food in the area. We love Satguru and staff. Jim n Trudi 😎

Tasty food. Busy when we got there so service was a bit slow. Only real fault was in trying to speed up, food was not quite steam- hot enough. I like steam coming out of my rice as i serve. Mango kulfi oh so much flavour and richness 🤩
Good Food Good Mood
A friend organised a groupon for four people here which was insane value. We had entrees, a curry of our choice each served alongside naan and rice followed by a dessert each which we could select. I was quite impressed with the curries and we tried a beef balti, lamb korma and two butter chickens given it’s such a (western) staple of this cuisine.<br/><br/>A vegetarian curry was also included so we got to try quite a cross section of the menu and it was all enjoyable. I finished with the mango kulfi which is my preferred Indian dessert as it’s not overly sweet and is always a light way to end a meal. If it was closer I would definitely return

Such friendly and kind service. The food was both delicious and traditional tasting! Definitely recommend! I will definitely be back here again. Great value for money also.

Food and service was good. The butter chicken was very nice and the beef was deliciously cooked. We came here on a voucher which was great value but $4 for a can of coke is a bit steep guys!

Great food, great service, Home made slow cooked meals were sensational. Especially enjoyed the lamb vindaloo, mango lassi was very tasty, not too sweet, highly recommend this place. Jack says perfect, not too strong, creamy butter chicken was my favourite. As for me, Kellie Watson, I liked the lot!!

We specifically asked for ‘mild’ goat curry' but when it came it was quite hot , and when we commented on it the waitress said ‘most people who like goat curry like to hot’!! They didn’t tell us at ordering.  It is not a cheap night out when the extras are added up.

we decided to try out Satguru when they advertised on groupon, claiming the voucher value was $85 for three course meal for 2. the restaurant is very tired and cheap looking and the service was “sour” to say the least. we had to ask for water. we were told to select 2 curries from the standard list. the rest was a set menu.. which we assumed would showcase their food and tempt us back. But apart from the pakoras which were great, the rest was without much flavour and quite small serves. we got to chose a small dessert at end from the usual offerings but this still left us a bit hungry. when i looked up the menu again to try to work out how this meal could possibly be $85 we discovered the groupon meal actually included a third vegetarian curry. when we asked the lady about this at end of meal she said “you have to ask for that, a lot of people don’t like the vegetarian curry”... ???? so because we didn’t know to ask we did not get our complete meal.. even though one of our two small curries we did order was vegetarian. She offered for us to have the vegetarian curry on its own then after dessert (no take away and the small serve of rice and one naan long gone). we had ordered 2 lassies and asked whether we could just substitute those as together were cheaper than the curry we missed out on but she said “no”. when i then tried to pay for the drinks on departure she was squatting on the floor behind the counter taking a personal call on the phone ... wouldn’t even acknowledge me .. so i put the money on counter and we left. It was all a bit of a joke... we won’t be back.

We have enjoyed Satgurus pizzas for over 10 years. We ordered 3 pizzas - the only choice was chicken - so we had chicken tikka, chicken balti and chicken vindaloo. Sadly the chicken was all the same except slight variations on the amount of capsicum, onion and chilly. So disappointed - will never go there again ☹️<br/>

We recently asked Satguru’s to cater for an event of 50 people. From the beginning of the process to the end, Satguru’s provided an exceptional and much appreciated service. We ordered 3 entrees, 4 mains, rice and naan, and received 2 types of complimentary yogurt salads - the food was cooked to perfection and many guests along the night took the time to comment on how much they enjoyed dinner. Satguru’s also provided complimentary hired Bain Marie’s, a testament to their dedication to ensuring a hassle-free night! There was also so much left over that every family were able to take some home. We are thankful and happy with our experience, and recommend them for their catering services.

I have never written a negative review EVER, but because of the horrible customer service and disappointing food, I have been compelled to do so. In this restaurant, we ordered four different types of curry; lamb rogan josh, vindaloo, curry chicken and spicy curry. For $15 curries, the portions we extremely small... disappointing. All the curries were beyond bland, not spicy, and they all tasted the same. SAME. Lamb and chicken were so dry and chewy, absolutely unpleasant to eat. The samosas we ordered were terribly dry and had no flavour. Nothing authentic with the dishes!<br/><br/>As a dessert person that love desserts, they were awfully sweet and sugary with no other valuable substance. Seriously, do not buy the desserts, because you will feel sick with regret when you finish. It's nasty. Trust me. The service was no better. They were extremely rude to my family because we asked for another bottle of water. I could go into detail but I wouldn't because it's not worth my time. Also, do they have something against Vouchers? Because they sure didn't seem too happy we were using one and made it very clear to us with their rude behaviour. They easily created an uncomfortable environment. Simply Ridiculous!<br/><br/>BeWarned. Do not eat at this restaurant unless you are willing to face disappointment, anger and regret. Horrible food and even more horrible customer service, what could possibly go wrong? Don't waste your time, trust me baby food taste better.<br/><br/>I would rate it a 0/5 but unfortunately that is not an option :(

A girlfriend bought a groupon voucher and it was a bargain! For $55 for four we shared two entrees (a samosa ad pakora each), four curries of our choice, rice, naan and a choice of dessert each. Corkage was a respectable $2.50 each. A cheap night out. <br/>The service was good, pleasant, attentive... the food was ok. The entrees were good but the curries although tasty lacked a certain richness I've enjoyed elsewhere and were fairly skimpy on the meats. The korma was watery to my taste, not creamy, the saag was good, the madras ok and the butter chicken was quite sweet. Dessert - the mango kulfi a bit icy and the galub jamun was tasty - but only one in a serve?<br/>We certainly got what we paid for - no complaints about the value but would try others before going back without a voucher. An ok experience with none of the complaints others have made.

Standard restaurant setting, nice enough service and very average food. <br/><br/>We had the chicken curry, malai kofta and aloo paneer to share. Both the chicken and malai kofta were fairly average and the paneer especially lacked any depth of flavour. <br/><br/>They did refuse to let us takeaway leftovers but did so politely, explaining their reasons.<br/><br/>Overall, nothing of special note here that'll be bringing me back.

We decided to try out Satguru's as they are currently offering a three course meal for $30 on groupon. We arrived quite early at 5.30 and were the only ones inside for quite a while. Our waiter was quite polite and friendly. Decor was pretty run of the mill but made up quite nicely. With the three course meal we were given two entree's - samosas and onion bhaji. Both were quite good! We were able to choose three curries - malai kofta, paneer and pea curry and chicken curry. All came with naan and rice. The curries were ok but nothing out of the ordinary. The kofta were a little bland and were missing the usual dried fruit. The paneer was quite bland - it lacked a depth of flavour. The dessert of gulab janum was nice but the icecream just tasted like milk. Disappointingly we weren't able to take our leftovers home and we had a decent amount leftover. Overall I probably won't be coming back. Nice enough food but there is definitely better around.

Above average food, a little over priced though. For good indian, try the Western suburbs (Aagan) and Kew (Aachi's).<br/>This restaurant though is let down by greedy owner and service. They probably will try every trick in the book to squeeze some $ out of the customers. I remember a few years back, this restaurant tried one of those groupon deals and the deal was for a buffet. Multiple reviewers reported back that the service was especially slow on the timed deal. <br/>PS. I wonder where all these 5.0 and 4.5 reviews from new accounts come from /cough shills.

Excellent food. Good service. Very good value for money. We were really satisfied very good size plates. Excellent the vindaloo chicken!!! Family friendly place. Highly reccomended<br/>

UPDATE 21/10/2017<br/>Still consistent.... no nonsense, easy to enjoy Indian fares and value for money.<br/><br/>Lots of commendation and reviews on the wall.<br/><br/>PREVIOUS<br/>Local, quaint, family run, authentic, well priced and enjoyable traditional Indian fares ....<br/><br/>Over the years we've visited the establishment, only a few changes (decoratively), still quaint,  that lingering authentic pungent embedded in the walls, casual family run and mostly an enjoyable experience.<br/><br/>Good food for what they are charging.

This is a little Indian restaurant tucked in Balwyn North. We went there with friends for dinner on a weeknight. It wasn't busy so was very cosy. Service was very friendly and prompt. We ordered chicken curry, daal makhani, butter chicken, margarita pizza, Punjabi pizza, plain naan, rice and yoghurt. Food was lovely. We had such a good time, when paying the bill we just paid them the amount they asked for. But when we got home we realised they over charged us by about $20! So beware! Make sure you double check the bill before you pay. That has ruined our dining experience.<br/><br/>After the visit in May, thought we'd give it another try since groupon has a good deal. We got a coupon for 2 adults and were going to order some food for the kids. We were told before we ordered, they charge $10 per child regardless how little food you order for them. We ordered some food for the kids less than $20 but still paid $20 as we didn't need any more food. We waited more than 50 minutes for the mains to arrive, kids were getting restless. Ppl without coupons were served before us, even the ones arrived after us. Guess it's an opportunity cost for cheap food. Also, after coming home looking at the deal we purchased, we were short changed again-we were not given the vegetarian curry dish that we suppose to get! I don't like restaurants that I also need to work as a supervisor every time. Once short changed may be forgivable, twice??? Don't think we'd be going back any time soon...

For any Indian curry lover, this is the place to go! We came here for dinner and were blown away by the delicious food! It is small and cozy, but still allows for conversation. The staff are efficient and nice, and the food came out quite quickly.<br/><br/>For entrees: we had samosas and vegetable pakora. Both of them were richly flavoured and cooked really well. The samosas had a light and crispy outside with soft potato filling inside. The vegetable pakoras were also really tasty, with lots of flavour! Both of them were accompanied by a yoghurt that helped to lessen the spiciness. I have a reasonable tolerance for spice, and found that they were not too intense.<br/><br/>For mains: we shared a vegetarian eggplant curry, a butter chicken curry, lamb rogan josh and a beef korma. Each of them were fantastic! They each had a unique flavour, and were classified as mild curries, so we had no problems there. They come with heaps of sauce, and well cooked pieces of meat/vegetable. Of course, the meal was made even better with naan bread, to help soak up all that delicious sauce! I would recommend all these curries, as I loved all of them!<br/><br/>For dessert: we tried all of the desserts (mango ice-cream, pistachio ice-cream and the sweet milk dumplings). The dumpling was really nice, it had a crispy outside that was coated in sugar (yum!), and the inside was soaked with a sweet sauce. The two ice-creams were also very nice, though I preferred the pistachio flavoured one, as it was milkier and had a richer consistency.<br/>The servings were quite reasonable (the samosas were huge!), and you would not need to have dessert to feel full! The curries look like they come in small servings, but they actually do fill you up, and of course, all that naan bread and rice helps too!<br/><br/>Overall, a great meal for a very reasonable price - I would definitely recommend trying this place out!

Delicious food. The naans are the best I've ever had. They're beautifully soft and fluffy. The curries are perfectly spiced. Would definitely recommend

Easy online ordering, ready fast. Delicious stuffed bread with mince inside. Excellent 'Punjab' pizza: tandoori chicken with plenty of garlic and cheese. We'll be going back for sure!

The food was actually very good and plentiful and was extremely good value for money with the voucher we used. However the service was poor and way below par (especially with their Australian achiever Award). The general cleanliness of the restaurant was also quite poor and there was a strong odor which was a little discomforting.

"...BEST PUNJABI FOOD I'VE HAD..FOR A LONG LONG TIME..!!..."<br/><br/>Tonight we visited SATGURU INDIAN RESTAURANT on Bulleen Road, Balwyn North...We did so on a Groupon Voucher - 3 Course Dinner for 4 - $49....!!!! Paid an extra $36 for drinks and an extra basket Naan bread..Was an absolute bargain at just over $21 each....!!!!<br/><br/>Okay....the 4 best things about buying these discount dining vouchers are the following.... <br/><br/>1. They save you your hard earned money...thereby allowing more frequent dining experiences...great for you...great for the industry...<br/><br/>2. They get you out and about.. take you out of your comfort zone.. get you out of your own suburb.. entice you to explore other cuisines.. <br/><br/>3. Allow you to take risks with dining choices - "doesn't matter if you make a blunder.. doesn't matter if you couldn't eat it.. doesn't matter if you wasted your time.. doesn't matter if you winged all the way home.. cos ultimately it was heavily discounted - you didn't pay the menu price.. so, you're always that 'one step ahead'..."<br/><br/>4. In taking those risks, you now and then, will inextricably find a place where you will be more than happy to pay full price...and indeed, where you will be more than content to decide that IT IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF IT'S CUISINE, AROUND...and thus...with great satisfaction, list it as one of your all-time FAVES....<br/><br/>Well..listing this little place as one of my 'all-time faves' is what happened tonight..<br/><br/>It's a lovely little quaint cafe style Indian restaurant - flowers on each table.,,bollywood on the TV...Northern Indian metal guest serving dishes...<br/><br/>I found the owner to be gentle, dignified, courteous and friendly - He certainly showed no malice towards us because we were eating in his restaurant at a discounted price..<br/><br/>The wait-staff..just the one..didn't really have time to 'pander to' and 'smile'..the woman was flat out ensuring that everyone seated in the place..got their meals..drinks and et al..without any muck-ups - She succeedeed swimmingly...and most of the tables were full...<br/><br/>The food was the BIG BIG STAR...just fabulous - authentic - tasty - perfectly seasoned - not oily - spicy but not biting hot - everything had it's own distinct flavour - everything was a winner in it's own right....<br/><br/>I couldn't fault any of the dishes we tried....<br/><br/>We started off with truly home-made SAMOSA'S - they were big, and beautiful..and VEGETABLE PAKORA'S - crisp, golden, perfectly seasoned..just delish..RAITA was chilled and fresh and allowed ample dipping for the four of us..<br/><br/>The curries: We chose the CHICKEN KORMA - lovely big tender chunks of white chicken meat in that delish cashew nut flavoured sauce and the MANGO CHICKEN - diced melt in the mouth chicken in a sweet and spicy curry base. The LAMB ROGAN JOSH - juicy cubed lamb in that gorgeous kishmiri sauce and the BEEF SHAHI KORMA [Yes..the Punjabi eat beef] was truly and seriously yum..!! <br/><br/>The SAFFRON BASMATI RICE was just superb - pot-hot, light, fluffy, all grains separated..beautiful buttery aroma and flavour...and the NAAN bread was OUT OF THIS WORLD - just cooked in the tandoor..edges charred, but so comforting..so warm, so soft and so succulent - we had to order another basket to mop up the juices..we weren't leaving anything behind..not tonight..<br/><br/>This remarkable meal ended with home-made ice-cream...we chose the MANGO KULFI and the PISTACHIO KULFI - both lovely..the mango was dense and icy..really cooled down our hot mouths..the pistachio was soft and creamy..restored everything back to balance..<br/><br/>Look..this meal was an absolute HIGHLIGHT - just delicious...real and unpretentious, and very much recommended..at MENU PRICE..and..with a GENEROUS TIP.... <br/><br/>Visited on Tuesday 22/09/2015 for Dinner with my family of four.

We also visited this restaurant for the second time, using a coupon again as we love Indian food and had enjoyed it last time<br/>The lady who seated us was pleasant but not really welcoming.  A few words of welcome would help.  <br/>The venue itself is fresh and clean and quiet, even though it was half full.<br/>The food is very good and the meat is tender and well cooked.  The entrees were a little overcooked though, and not as fresh as the first time we visited.  The serves were not huge but there was  ample to eat for the two of us with the rice and Roti, and Kulfi to follow was tasty.<br/>Would be visit again????  Yes on a coupon!

Likely the best Indian cuisine I've ever eaten. <br/><br/>Always fresh, tasty and vibrant! <br/><br/>A huge bonus of the curries here is that they always seem to use good quality lean meat. It's so frustrating when your wanting to power down a good tasty curry and you chew into a tough, gristly piece of meat. I've never experienced that here! <br/><br/>The pizzas are quite nice, if your after an Indian style pizza.<br/><br/>The tandoori meats are fantastic also! <br/><br/>I've eaten myself to the point of spewing here a number of times 😆
Lisa O'Connor
We have eaten dinner here once and have had take away twice in the last 6 months. The food has always been very good and full of flavour. A couple of hick ups with home delivery but once notified, the staff rectified the issue very promptly.

Grazing. I was going to buy a voucher for Satgurus Indian taking notice of the 81% rating on urbanspoon!! Why 81%? With so many very bad experiences from other patrons? I'm so glad I've bothered to read the reviews
Cat
Very disappointed. This was our second trip here. The first time we went here we enjoyed the food and service but this time it was appalling. When we requested a high chair for our 5 month old we were refused and so we had to feed him on our laps whilst trying to eat ourselves as we were not allowed to put our stroller near our table. The management seemed put out that we were using a voucher and I belive that is why we were treated the way we were. We will not be patronizing this restaurant again
Peter
The owners should not sign up for voucher schemes if they are not prepared to honour them. We will never go there again.

Seems nothing has changed re "Vouchers". Was very interested to see the recent review by "Disappointed Local" re the experience at this restaurant when using a "Voucher"<br/>My wife and I had the same unpleasant happening when we used a voucher here some time back.<br/>Our reception was actually quite unfriendly and we were made feel very uneasy that we dared to use this voucher which was advertised and freely available on one of the on-line sites, Groupon or similar for memory.<br/>I cannot in any way understand why the management of this restaurant ever went with this method of promotion if they hate their guests using a voucher.<br/>As I say, this was some time back, but, looks like nothing has changed in this respect and I would warn anyone using a voucher to think twice about this method here, as you are very likely to get the same unfriendly reaction that we and now seems others are getting. If the management want to use this method of promoting their business, they really need to be spoken to quite severely by the management of the Voucher Scheme involved.

Disappointed local. My family has patronised Satgurus for many years. My recent experiences utilising vouchers have not been pleasant. I notice that the restaurant is currently offering another deal. The extended period of this offer would seem to indicate that anyone who has visited under the current management will not again subject themselves to the poor treatment afforded anyone who has had the temerity to purchase a voucher. I have no intention of returning as much as I like Indian food.

Glad I did not reviews before I visited. Being a new local decided to try and so glad we did! Service was great - friendly & didn't rush us. Food was delicious and perfect portion size as well as reasonably priced. Used a voucher on payment & the owner discounted it and gave back the voucher to use again! Highly recommended for locals wanting a low key night or take away (the phone was ringing hot all night).

Cha, who had been reading an (old) article on the wall about how many takeaway meals Satguru's make each night, said: "I'd buy takeaway from here if I lived nearby." And we'd go there to eat in as well, for sure.
Synesthesia2011
Genuine Restaurant Operator. We would come here once a fortnight when we lived around the corner and ordered the same meals every time. Butter chicken, Malai kofta, Kashmiri rice & garlic naan. Absolutely delicious. We have moved away from the area but popped in again tonight placed our regular order and it all came back. Very fond memories. Good portions and pleasant service.
Info
A good "local" eatery. This is a small. "local" eatery that I eat at every few months. I hasten to add that I do not use coupons, but my experience has always been positive. Never had a bad meal ! The portions are not large but the food is good. We normally have a fish curry, a vegetable curry, a bowl of Basmati rice and a few Roti or a garlic nan. BYO beer or wine makes it a pleasant outing.<br/>We have a few Indian restaurants to choose from in this neighbourhood and we eat there as well, but they are a bit more formal.<br/>Depends on the mood!
Lillian
Expensive option for families. Great food but very pricey. Family of 5 (3 kids). Ordering 1 large and 1 small serve of rice for $24 (for 4 main meals) meant the price moved from reasonable to expensive. Won't be going back. Lots of good restaurants at a more reasonable price.
Typevu
Not the greatest. The food was pretty average but the service was worse - felt like we were rushed the whole time.

Get It India!. Bloody hell, now having bought the voucher and tried booking for dinner Fri 1 Aug, I decided to check feedback on Urban Spoon. I know some reviews can be biased, but with so many saying the same, I am fearful that I have just wasted my money and I will let Deals. com know. Will now check in the future with Urban spoon before purchasing vouchers. Perhaps Deals. com needs to do something about quality control

Bought A Voucher: Stay Away. When I tried to make a booking with voucher we were told they are fully booked out. After a few attempts finally booked one night. The service was horrible. The food was below average, the samosa's were cold starters bhajiya was uncooked from inside. We were told we can't order chicken or seafood dishes which was not mentioned on the coupon as per coupon we could order any mains. When asked we were told rudely that what do you expect you have paid only $29. I ordered malai kofta it was the worst curry I have ever had. It had bhajiyas than kofta. The rice was definitely a couple of days leftover we couldn't eat at all. The dessert was the only thing we could eat again the portion was very small. Overall food wise and service wise we ad horrible experience. Definitely spoiled our evening. I should have read reviews about this restaurant before eating here.
Andrew
Small shady place with Insipid food and horrible service!!. Horrible- just one word. I am sorry but I would call a spade a spade. I will also not hesitate to say that its NOT Indian food. Tastes more like substandard Nepalese food. <br/>This small place is more like a takeaway with the smell of burnt oil and Insipid food that's made with cheapest, substandard substances. Tables have no clothes, floor unclean, no wine or beer. Just a fridge in which they kept 3 flavors of soda that you can buy at restaurant prices. <br/>Besides, the service is horrible when you go there with a voucher. Went with a voucher for 4. They misled when the voucher said any 1 starter for each person. We were served just a single plate with contents of about 2 starters, instead of 4 and no meat starters. When asked the waiter (owner) said, you may not be able to eat 4 starters. We have decided never to go there again. Never ever!!
Jeffrey
Great food - really enjoyed our dinner. Not sure why the establishment received so many negative ratings, just came back from (mid-week) dinner, we were the only customer, family of 4 on a voucher deal. The food was really good, from the Entree - Samoza-curry puff thingy, to the 4 curries, basmati rice, Naans, and Ice-cream desserts.<br/><br/>Definitely recommended (with voucher of course!).
Michael Happyman Frith
I've had two scoopons here and both times really enjoyed the meal friendly service and only too happy to give us more food included in the all you can eat scoopon
Bonjour
DO NOT BUY A COUPON HERE. Well it's great to see that the establishment is still treating coupon holders like total crap. They must forget that they are the ones who addvertise the coupons and its the coupon owners who pay for them.<br/>I was rudely served in 2011 and the owner himself tried to not honour nearly every aspect of the voucher. Everytime I drive past I cringe.<br/><br/>I think that the coupon campaign has actually managed to sully their reputation so much that I wonder why they keep doing it.<br/>Baffling.
Charmainec1953
Voucher holders beware!. I rang the restaurant to make a reservation for the following night. The first question that I was asked was " Do you have a voucher?" When I replied "Yes" I was told that they were booked out and would I like to come on Tuesday of the next week. I declined the suggestion. <br/>I was a little suspicious, so I rang again a little later to make the same booking but this time I said no to the voucher question and surprise, surprise was successful in getting a table. Hmmmmm!
Jules0301
Never again.. Service non existent. Not only charged for BYO, but also charged for DIY. No offer of all you can eat mains. Terrible experience. We do not recommend this Take A Way shop with tables.
Lisa Chapple
DO NOT DINE HERE! Terrible service! We bought a scoopon voucher for this restaurant but certainly didnt expect to get such rude unfriendly service just because we had a voucher. Food was not great at all and the waiter was very rude and made us feel unwelcome! He even went so far to say 'u only paid $29 what do u expect?'

Dodgy Indian Food. I wish I had read all these reviews prior to buying food from Satgurus. Meet was pre cooked and tasted like leather, started to feel ill for awhile after my meal. Never again.

I purchased the deal and when we got there (Wed evening) we were put down the back near the kitchen, we asked for the window table and was told no. Only one other table of people who were Indian and they got great treatment. We were not welcomed, we were not given water until we asked, the other table of Indian customers got water straight away. Husband and wife team, both ignorant and rude. Lady never smiles. We were told "All you can eat" not true. We were told what entrée we were allowed, same with mains and desserts. Disgusting food. Entrée was reheated and so dry and overcooked and tasted terrible. We were not given an option to order seafood yet voucher stated seafood. Dessert was disgusting, one bite and I was nearly sick. The ice cream was the biggest joke portion. Two mouthfuls for a male. When we left and asked why couldn't we have been seated near the window they argued and continued to argue with us. Please do not go to this place. They told us that next time maybe their restaurant is too far for us to travel, we live in Balwyn! The married couple need to be inducted on how to run a restaurant, and, how to be courteous and learn manners.
Brent Ed
Rude ignorant service, food is abysmal. Meat is obviously precooked alone and then thrown in sauce for serving, lamb and beef were chewier than my right shoe. Chicken was fatty, dessert portion was a joke! Have been here now twice with coupons, never again! The last time they refused the coupon as it wasn't printed; contrary to the coupon terms and conditions. Gladly, I received a retrospective refund from scoopon. Shame to see what it's become, a number of years ago it was the best Indian in bulleen / balwyn.

Bought A Voucher: Stay Away. I decided to write this review after seeing that they had recently started advertising again on Groupon. Went there on a Groupon voucher and was made to sit in a tight corner and was told we could not move to another table because it was all booked. Of course they weren't, no one came while we were there. The woman who served us was very cold and angry. I am not sure why they are advertising on Groupon when they are clearly unhappy when people actually turn up to use their vouchers. We could not leave soon enough and will never return even though the food was good and the person I went with lives around the corner.

HORRIBLE. I just called this restaurant to book a table for this weekend - 4 days in advance. I stated that we had a scoopon voucher (BAD MISTAKE) as soon as I mentioned the voucher they were suddenly booked out for the entire weekend (yes 4 days in advance!) I was told that I should have booked 2 weeks in advance, which is not stated on the voucher anywhere. He was VERY VERY RUDE to me on the phone and quite frankly he should not be in this business if that is the type of service he gives to his customers. Absolutely disgusted, and I haven't even stepped foot in the restaurant yet! I think I would rather lose my $50 than eat at this appalling restaurant. DISGUSTING

Scoopon beware. I have never received such bad service. From the moment you try to book a table they make you wait weeks as they are fully booked. Then they claim to have only a 6 pm sitting which we take . However on the night people were coming in at all times with scoopon vouchers . You can see they treat non cupon customers different. The food was ok but not worth coming back for.

Scoopon Voucher - liked. Having read all the negative reviews yesterday I was very concerned that we were head here for dinner last night. However, I find the staff polite not overly friendly but that was fine. The food was good and while it was "not all that you can eat" as stated on the voucher - it certainly was enough that all four of us felt that we had enough and didn't have to rush off to Maccas. Overall good experience, restaurant was clean and food was good. We would definitely go back . Maybe with all the negative criticism they have improved !

Shocking. Never ever going back again. Claims to have won the Australian Achiever award in 2013. What a farce. Worst service I have experienced at a restaurant period. The waiter's name was Nirwal and you can only assume I remember the name for the shockingly bad service we received. Refused to provide us with a larger table for the kids even though they told us that we could only book a table for families if it were on a weekday to which we complied. Still, upon our arrival we were told that as we were using a voucher(to which we revealed when we called to book), they said that the extra seats at a table were only for full paying customers. Unbelievable. Stay away. Far far away.

Used a coupon and dined with four adults and two young children. Male owner refused to give us a bigger table and chairs for the children even though we had booked in advance. After heated discussion we were granted two additional chairs for the children in a very cramped corner. Asked to move to the next table with more room, with chairs for six people. Was told the table was booked. Funnily enough the 'booked' table was never fully utilised and only two people sat there! We were told that because the children hadn't purchased vouchers they weren't entitled to a seat. We even told the owner that the children had brought their own food to eat and did so. Owner was extremely rude. Do not recommend dining at this restaurant!!

Good value on a coupon. Had good service and value from a coupon $29 deal. Can't fault for the price. Owner was nice and he was polite. Food was tasty, quick and easy dining option, recommended.

Have eaten here before as it is local...the food was okay...went to book the other night as I knoe it can get quite busy...was asked if I had a voucher (which I did as I recently bought an entertainment book) when I confirmed they said there was nothing for 6 weeks...I have since ripped up the voucher and I will not be returning...especially to pay full price...I'd rather travel a little in order to get better service and better food!

Terrible. Another Coupon <br/>Again it was meant to be all you can eat, but told on arrival that we can only choose one main and one desert each. Not offered anything as far as drinks no water even supplied at the tables, felt unwelcome at the establishment.<br/><br/>Would not recommend to any friends that they dine here.

Voucher users beware!<br/><br/>All you can eat? Told to choose one curry and one dessert each with a set entree. Disappointed. Got a scowl from waitress when we presented the All You Can Eat voucher - stated voucher user when we booked. Avoid like the plague. Wish I'd logged on here before buying the voucher. Hard to secure a booking yet the place is still almost empty as I sit here typing this.

Have a voucher for dinner <br/>No choice in starter & drink, food was average, service is not good<br/>Had worst Indian food ever<br/>Never come back<br/>Not happy

Tasty Indian. Had dinner there tonight with a voucher... I don't know what everyone else has been complaining about... the wait staff were very nice and friendly, the food was tasty and we had a great time. It's not near me but if I'm in the area again I would definitely go back. The naan was probably one of the best I've had, not oily like many other places.

Brillant Food!. I have been going to this restaurant for years and have found the quality is always at a high standard. <br/>Meat is tender, spices are perfect for a mild pallet and the gulab jamun is to die for. <br/>Don't pay attention to the everyone who wants their kids to be included in their "2 people voucher". Brilliant customer service, the gentleman is always welcoming and his wife has an excellent smile. <br/>To all those complaining about booking, as a restaurant owner myself I understand the need to allow tables to be available for FULL paying customers. <br/>The owners are normal people like you and I and need to pay their bills! Stop asking for more things for free and enjoy the best Indian food Melbourne has to offer.

Worst Indian Restaurant ever..... This restaurant is a bad name for every Indian out there... Grumpy owner and grumpy service towards voucher users.... then why do they bother using these voucher services????<br/>I called in multiple times to book an appointment for using these vouchers and was told fully booked out and next date available was 20th june.... I have walked past and is mostly empty, even though it is a small restaurant...<br/><br/>Was told to leave my baby home or pay 15 dollars to have a 2 year old baby along with us.... this is pure discrimination against families....<br/>The reason he gave us was that babies are messy and they eat.....<br/><br/>Do yourself a favour and avoid this place like a PLAGUE.......

A fair comment. We bought a coupon for dinner of 4. I tried to book 3 times, but always got told "fully booked". So I went out to walk pass and only saw 3 tables with customers. Finally booked in at 4th time. <br/>Food was good, better than other Indian restaurants, the meat in curry was a bit more than others. But the service lady seemed very unhappy with angry face whole night. We had some food left, asked to have a container to bring home, since this deal is not all you can eat, this is the set meal that we paid for. But she rejected and said, "we stated in coupon that you cannot take food home". But I could not find the writing on the coupon. Desert should be sweat milk dumpling with Indian ice cream, but we did not get any ice cream.<br/>This is not a pleasant experience, they made us feel like we are taking their advantage and we are not supposed to use coupon. If they are not happy for people to buy coupons, it would be better not to sell coupons rather than been angry with customers. Not worth to go again.

Came here with a Groupon and it was pretty good-especially for $29 (plus $7 for drinks). Samosas, paneer mutter aloo and naan bread were particularly good. Naan was so soft and fresh! Gulab jamun was yum, and hosts were friendly. The food wasn't oily or overly rich either. Would come back.

Worst Ever Food and Service AVIOD. Bought voucher for all you can eat meal there<br/>Where to start had a kid along and was rudely told no matter what she eats they will charge 15 dollars<br/><br/>Cafe like small place would not even call it a restaurent<br/>Food what a disaster<br/>Entree was bland and plain no taste at all<br/>Main no salt at all and no spices felt like the meat was just dipped in a sauce and yes never seen lamb mixed with cauli flower in curry<br/>rice was undercooked<br/><br/>Although said all you can eat was never asked if we wanted the next one as the people was too grumpy and rude to start with <br/><br/>Forget the voucher and this place there there is one called aashiyana in Balywn which has much better taste and env than this one

Not Recommend. This place is too small, items are tasteless, worthless. Customer service is below par

Kylie. I don't even know where to start we purchased a deal on Scoopon , we to the restaurant we would be bringing our two small children , deal said we had our choice of entrees we were told this is what you get , no choice , then told that our children would be charged $15 each to sit there & not eat because kids make to much mess . I asked to take home our left over food & was was told " we dont let you take home food with the Scoopon deal you already have it cheap " , meaning you could if you paid full price , I replied " So you would rather it went in the bin ? " Yes was the reply . Then the owner walked over to our table said children need to seated at all time so they dont upset other customers , there was 1 other table in the restaurant who had no problem with my 2yr old standing next to me , he was not running riot , then the owner picked up my son yelled at him & put him in his high chair I am furious & this is the first of many complaints I will be making as it it a sunday night . DISGRACEFUL

Ya!! Again! I am a voucher user! <br/>Firstly, food tasted plain. I couldn't tell much different between the mango chicken and beef korma... My partner like the nan bread but I didn't taste anything special. Service was normal (not rude but just no smile) which was fine. <br/>We are a very small eaters, we couldn't finish our food and they didn't want to give us a take away container. The reasoning was we were using voucher and didn't pay the full price.<br/>My partner didn't argue with them and just returned to the table and told me how ridiculous this place was. The owner/manager came out and told us what the original price of the food we ate was and because we didn't pay full price and used a voucher we were not entitled to takeaway our leftovers. Most people could finish the food and even order more apparently. We were shocked by the attitude and customer service received, and we did actually order extra sides as well. My partner then told him "the whole meaning of a business providing a voucher is to promote their food and bring new customers in. By providing poor customer service and treating people with this poor attitude will not bring us back here." (the general attitude was very poor because we didn't pay full price) anyway, he said "I don't want to argue with you any more. I will give you one take away box this one time, but I don't want to do it because you aren't paying full price."<br/>When he brought us the take away box, he couldn't just move forward instead had to add, "the other reason we don't recommend you to take away is because of health implications. People forgot the food and leave it in the car bla bla bla..."<br/>I stopped him" So why are you providing the take away box to the customers who pay full price? What's your point?"<br/><br/>Why argue if you make no sense... We just wana go and forgot about that stupid argument. Definitely a bad experience and will not recommend to anyone except the Paul guy!

Your advice ignored Paul!. Previous reviewer made his main point on advising others here what to do with regards their preferences.<br/><br/>Sorry, but this is a platform for members to state their opinions re their experiences.<br/>Sorry also, but this is 2013 and whether you like it or not, coupons are an efficient and reasonable method of customers having a preview, if you like and perhaps returning at some time in the future.<br/><br/>Something which is sadly lost by the proprieters in their thinking is the fact that should a "Couponer" have a good experience in their first visit, it should almost guarantee future business, with or without coupons.<br/><br/>I, like the majority of others here, fully concur with what's been written here in that the treatment given me a while back at this establishment was just plain rude and uninviting. Makes it hard here to specify opinions of any individual dish, as the whole experience was in the negative. <br/><br/>After dining last night at another Indian Restaurant, I was reminded just how bland the food tasted at Satguru's and coupled with the terrible attitude of the staff, made this place a definite never return!
Paul Donovan
One of the friendliest restaurants we have ever eaten in, staff are welcoming and courteous. Have often had items that are not on the menu, and the samosa and onion bhaji starters are the best. Impossible to fault the veggie korma, dahl variations and prawn delicacies. Ignore the nonsense coupon reviews (so many people always looking for something for nothing), this place is fantastic.

SHOCKING !!!!. We dined here using a Groupon Voucher and from the moment we arrived we were treated like second class citizens. Firstly NOT EVEN A SMILE FOR A GREETING pointed to your sitting outside, took 10 minutes to receive a menu and also no glasses so we could pour ourselves a drink from the BYO we took along. A lady (again NO SMILE) came out to explain the menu, we get set entree one main and dessert.. WELL CONSIDERING THE DEAL WAS ""ALL YOU CAN EAT" it certainly wasnt. We will NEVER dine there again. do these people realise that when you decide to ADVERTISE & MARKET your restaurant with Groupons or wherever it is NOT in the spirit of the deal to go against whats been advertised and also to SHOW some sort of customer service to EVERY DINER.<br/>WE WILL NOT BE GRACING THIS PLACE AGAIN...... STAY CLEAR......
KandE
Not in the Spirit of the Deal. Went here using a coupon. Upon presentation of the coupon we were immediately treated differently to other customers. We were forced to sit at a dirty table for at least 10 minutes while other customers were tended to. Then the owner, who was quite rude, cleaned our table and walked off. 5 minutes later another employee explained the menu to us. The worst aspect of the night was how sneaky they were in the interpretation of the coupon. They limited our choice of curries (only allowed to order the same curry again) and refused to give us more than one serving of Naan or rice saying that it was not included the deal. All I can say was that it was not in the spirit of the deal and we were very unhappy with our treatment. We left very annoyed. We will not be going back when there are so many other note worthy places to dine at. Horrible service.

Dead ordinary. Entrees acceptable, Mains well below average, bland and gluey, Dessert nice but should have been served warm. Minimum EFT $20 a bit rude.

Coupon ALL You Can Eat. Dined here with a group of friends using a coupon deal that included ALL YOU CAN EAT Main Courses, + set starters and dessert.<br/>The curry was decent but not as great as western suburb or CBD Indian restaurants such as Curry Vault/GayLords or Aagan. We tried the plain naan and cheese naan, both were cooked to perfection (soft, yet crispy).<br/><br/>What disappointed me with the whole dining experience was the service we received.<br/>As we presented the vouchers, we were instantly treated differently than other diners, like we're not welcome here. Sure this is to be expected. However, what shocked me was that the owner/head waiter and his wife vehemently suggested that we should not be eating more curry, as it is eating into their profit margins. They even jokingly said the following phrases, "If you eat any more, then I'll have to push you through the door". "Tonight all we're doing is serving you". They started giving us the rude attitude after only 8 curries (we had 4 people dining). <br/><br/>Overall, above average food, but the rude service was the highlight of our night. I normally lurk on Urbanspoon, but felt compelled to create an account just to warn others to avoid coming here.

Dinner at satguru. Not really a restaurant more a cafe style. food was not all that great and the service very poor. The meat appeared to pressure cooked ( overcooked) The only thing I liked was the samosa entre. Dont think I will be revisiting
Jeff
Fair. Passable but not great. Samosas were good but the curries that were meant to be very spicy were only about medium. The naan was warmed rather than fresh.
Trinity
Worst experience!. Worst Indian food ever, waited for ever for each dish, food is not fresh at all, meat was overcooked, the waitress (daughter of owner) was not friendly, not recommended!

Spicy and expensive. Spicy food even after asking for it not to be spicy.Pretty expensive for the quantity provided.I am indian and i couldnt really understand the staff out here, feel sorry for australians.Thanks.

Good food, friendly service. Enjoyed our meal here ... a few different things on the menu and everything tasted fresh and good. My only regret is that we're not locals ... if we were I reckon we'd be there or taking away once a fortnight. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere is 'relaxed suburban'. Decor more cafe than restaurant but hey, we were there for the food not the ambiance and, on a very cold Melbourne winters night, they delivered!
Bon Sapor Food
Not the best Indian, fatty meats and sauces are average. Doesn't taste fresh at all. Chimes in balwyn is much better.

Quick cheery service. Highly reviewed by Matt Preston 5 years ago. Review still stands strong. Delicious curry especially the korma. Best garlic naan I have ever eaten. Very cheap & excellent food! Highly recommend!!

Chicken Butter Cream (Butter Chicken). This dish has spoiled me, no other butter chicken comes close to being as delicious as Satgurus. Velvety smooth and enticingly tomato flavoured, the spices of the tandoor are a welcome burst in a dish that so many other restaurants drown in Heinz tomato soup. We cook cauliflower and peas and mix them through the copious sauce that the tender beautifully cooked chicken sits in. Eaten with naan, this is a perfect meal.

The food here used to be very good, however more recently it has become bland and boring - pity...
