Review Red Lantern Chinese Bbq - Balwyn

The serving size for the dishes was rather small for the price, especially the bean curd. The taste was alright but quite bland, without much authentic flavour apart from the roast duck and pork. The decor and atmosphere were pleasant. The service was friendly and there was no credit card surcharge, but expect a handwritten rather than printed tax invoice.

Since moving to Balwyn a few months ago, we were looking for delicious Asian food within walking distance to our place. Then we discovered Red Lantern. We've come back many times as the food is absolutely delicious and the customer service is faultless. We always feel welcome here and find ourselves ordering the same dishes because they're amazing! We recommend ordering the honey chicken, vegetarian fried rice, eggplant dish, XO sauce green beans and minced pork, ma po tofu, sweet & sour fish & black bean beef.

Yummy roast meat, love the roast pork, spot-on salted fish fried vermicelli and duck vermicelli. It’s my regular place. Highly recommended.

One the good local Chinese restaurant restaurants. Consistent quality. Some of my favourites are. Stuffed eggplant, bbq pork, hony pepper steak, Mongolian beef, fried noodles, etc.... All good.

I'm surprised that there have not been many reviews for Red Lantern. It has been around for many years and I suspect there has been a steady rotation of owners. It used to be very famous for its roasted meats but other joints have now surpassed it.

We visited on a Sunday night and ordered a range of dishes. The two roasts were small in quantity and tasted mediocre. The salt and chilli chicken ribs were well fried. My favourite dish of the night was the salt and pepper calamari. The batter was thin and crispy. The calamari was fresh and cooked well. The biggest disappointment was their special - the pig trotter hot pot. There was hardly any meat and the sauce was quite bland.

We had complimentary red bean soup at the end of the meal. Service was very friendly and the dishes came out at a steady pace.

Overall we were satisfied with our experience tonight but there was room for improvement.
We arrived around 6:30pm, 7 adults three kids, it took over an hour to diver our dishes. When we all finished our meal around 7:45, our last dish “salt and chili founder fish” came out, but while we cut through the fish, it was undercooked. We requested to cancel the fish as it’s too late around 8’o and we can’t wait for the fish to be cooked, all our guesses were already fulled and tired. however, at the counter, they forced us to pay for the fish even no one wants to eat it, they said “ you can take away!”. I can’t be bother to argue with them and ended up paying this unwanted uncooked fish leftover . This is a very disappointed and awful experience, never go back again.

Staff were friendly and accommodating. The beef with noodles and vegetables that I had was very nice . I have been to this restaurant before and will go again .

Definitely not family friendly!!
We made a 6pm booking with a 1year old and we were not served until 6.45. There was only two other tables occupied at this point. Our meals came out at 7.30 and some of them not even hot!!
Definitely not returning... EVER!

Very long wait when restaurant is not even full! Could improve on service efficiency . The today special of pork trotter noodles were average .

Red Lantern is a neighbour gem. The roast duck was delicious and not fatty. We usually call ahead to reserve the duck as they don’t seem to have a lot. They offered a wide selection on the menu and it’s a great place for a quick dinner.

This place is a joke we waited with starving kids for nearly 2 hours we are not ones to complain yet we asked the waitress If our main meals were coming as restaurant was empty we got a bill put on the table and that was it just rude and ridiculous have been coming for a long time this is my last .

Great local Chinese. It's been our favourite for a number of years. Consistently great dishes, our favourites are roast duck, honey pepper beef, squid, chicken ribs, just too many ... with special fried rice. Very lucky to have this great place to eat out close to home. Well known to many other locals obviously, alway plenty of diners.
