Review Hanamaruya - Bankstown

Hayden
I'm a regular here for about 2 years now, these guys are always super friendly and hospitable. I always feel welcomed upon arrival & departure. The food is very affordable, tasty and high quality. My go to place for a delicious, filling meal and some nice drinks. Thanks for the good times, that I won't forget.

I have been going to this local Japanese restaurant on and off for a few years now. They are one of the first Japanese restaurants in Bankstown. Location wise, strategically located in Bankstown city centre, plenty of parking around the area. Food is always consistently good not great, decent portion size, good variety of dishes, and staff are always super friendly. Have tried their ramens, sushi platters, udons and bento boxes. I only give 4 stars because I feel like their price is a little bit on the expensive side and they charge 1.5% surcharge for cards payment. Having said that, I will definitely come back to support the local business. The place is packed during lunch and dinner hours, ensure you come bit early if you go with a larger group.

Most affordable Ramen! Had Sho-yu Ramen for 15$, amazing during rainy days. As you can see from the pic, plenty of garnish, made fresh and served hot! Served within 10mins, staff are friendly and place is clean. Great vibe throughout. Family friendly. I will definitely going to come back for another ramen fix! 5% discount for cash, 1.5% card surcharge.

Food was great just wished they did a snack size version of chicken karrage - which was drenched in a weird sauce that was overly sweet? Besides that, great Japanese food for the area!

Hanamaruya is simply unbeatable From the warm and polite staff members, the izakaya style interior and the light jpop that whispers back of the ear reminisces dotonbori of Osaka.. There is huge selection of food to choose from, As authentic as nigiri and sashimi boat to a modernised vocanoe roll, this restaurant is for all. All the dishes are carefully prepared, served with photogenic presentation, excuted with wow flavours. Delicious yet affordable. If you have been dining in Japanese restaurants you will know what I mean. Hanamaruya is an iconic hotspot for Bankstown siders so the restaurant gets very busy during peak hours and weekends and it is worth the wait in the que :)

The food is amazing, but the egg noodles are a bit bland. Otherwise all yummy.

Love it here and will always come back the food quality for its price is amazing

Would you expect to find Japanese food in the heart of Bankstown? Not really, but Hanamaruya is a restaurant you must try! The sushi is delicious and I wish I had ordered more. The ramen was very filling with an addicting savoury broth. Service was good as the staff are friendly. Seating was a bit tight however and the table can get filled up easily if you order a lot (which is tempting).

Lol holy shit! This place is crap! The bento box looked ok but it was greasy as fuck and the miso soup tasted like bath water! Look elsewhere for good Japanese food! This place should be shut down!

A monopoly (lol) of Japanese food in Bankstown. It was my mum who introduced me to this place. Loved it's extensive menu and very tasty (trust me it's very) udon menu including some spicy options too! Generous serving and affordable pricing indeed.

Great Food, great flavours....will definitely go back for more in the future. Teriyaki Chicken Bento is one of my favourite dishes.... I love the salad and miso soup that accompany the bento. The Sesame Ice cream is a great way to finish the meal with....Friendly and helpful staff.

We stopped by here to get dinner before heading on a road trip. Restaurant was empty but we were put in the very end seat right near the toliet just because we have a pram. Not only does it take a good 5 minutes just to get the waitress's attention, but she also decided to take the order from the other table that arrived after we did. We did mention to the waitress that we were here first and that we are in a rush. Yet she still proceeded to do our order last. Her exact words was " just let me do this first , I will be quick." So obviously the other table get their food before we did. Very disappointed in the service and will never come here again!

We walked pass this restaurant many times so this time we give it a go and it became our new favorite Japanese restaurant in Bankstown. Good food good taste and good value. We definitely come back :)

It seems there has been a change in everything since the last time I went there. The change is to the better; better interior decor, better taste, freshness and generous serving (compared to the last time). Menu has changed too, to the better. Well done! :)

Great food in the heart of Bankstown.. Been here a few times and will be going back again.

Pork Ramen = Amazing cant wait to go back soon.
David Mars Armstrong
Ramen is ok here. About the quality of a cheap so-so ramen that you might find at a sushi bar.

It's been a very nice dinner place for me in Australia. Especially, I loved the taste of Spicy Pork Ramen. Unreal!! Better try it out. Wish to have a picture....... srr guys

Go there at least once a week, always good quality. The Grilled Salmon Lovers & Karaage Don Chicken are awesome.
Jennifer Swift
Decent local Japanese restaurant with good rice dishes. The ramen however is very very bland.

Nice Japanese foods at comparable prices!
Henry's Food Reviews
What did Jenny say to her favourite Japanese restaurant?
“Man(I’ll)maruya”

Not my best.

My point is: Hanamaruya is not to be confused with its cousin in Hurstville.

Hanamaruya’s food is, to be brutally honest, exceedingly ordinary, like Harry’s nose when Luna fixed it with a quick “episkey”.

I ordered the Chicken Namban lunch set and a mini pork ramen.

The lunch bento box may have been chicken namban but it wasn’t namban one on my list. The cats was lightly coated and crispy but the cutlet itself was quite flavourless despite being juicy. The sauce was also quite plain - an ordinary Japanese mayo without much embellishment. The other sides, as with many bentos, were just meh.

The mini pork ramen had a good egg but the broth again was more of an essence-of-pork than rich in flavour.

All in all, the restaurant is good for a feed during lunch if you’re craving Japanese food but there are better options available.
Sylvia Pham
Fresh sashimi and kingfish was delicious! Also I got to love the kimchi udon soup! Perfect for a cold night!

A pretty average Japanese restaurant. Nothing terrible but also nothing wow. I did however enjoy the aburi salmon sushi, very light and fresh and nice to share. Also want to mention the minced meat in the ramen, I usually opt for roasted pork but wanted to try something different but the texture didn’t really compliment the ramen. The “chilli” soup was nice though.

I love eating at this place! Especially the chicken namban, it's so hard to find anywhere else. Food portion is pretty good and I feel so full after. But I didn't like where there was a minimum of using $40 for eftpos. Other than that, I think the prices are decent for the portions.

I've been here a couple of times. The food here is average, nothing bad to say about this place.
Food was served reasonably fast and staff were friendly!

The good was overall really great for the price point. Its also easily accessible to us and a great location. The only disappointment was the chicken Katsu Curry, they leave the chicken skin on under the batter and it's very chewy. The waitress was also very rude in trying several times to take our dishes when we weren't done eating yet. She looked impatient and seemed to want to make us leave earlier than we wanted to. We had only been there for about 35min and I understand there were other patrons waiting to come in but you should never rush customers to leave your restaurant.

Our family of 4 had lunch here today. Food is delicate, as expected. Service is japanese-style: polite and gentle. Highly recommended. Will come back.

Great place for Japanese food.

They have a great range of meals including ramens, udons, sushi, dons, and bento boxes and various other side dishes.

Their dishes never fail to disappoint me; always serving their best every time I visit. One of top Japanese places I have tried.

It sometimes gets crowded during lunch hours (1pm-2pm).

But overall, every visit is a great experience.

i am a sucker for japanese food!
i came here ages ago when it first opened and i didnt like it. today, it was good. maybe bc i was hungry, but i was really impressed!!

udon was really nice (better than iki) and the salmon sushi that came with it was pleasant. the boys liked their bento boxes and we were all very full. the serving sizes are great and the menu is fantastic, with various choices! they were actually packed when we came.

100% improved since my previous visit, will come again :))
Joanna Luong
The food here was okay but the quality dropped since last year. Customer service is a little bit slow as well. Not many Japanese restaurants around Bankstown area.
Jesslikestoeat
The sushi here is nice but ridiculously expensive for the size you get, especially the 6 piece volacano roll for $18. The ramen was also not the best in terms of flavour. Overall would not recommend.

I ordered the vegetable tempura bento box on the lunch menu and also the avocado sushi rolls and cucumber sushi rolls. Both were very average, with the sushi being quite fresh and the bento box being pretty standard overall. The vegetable tempura was very oily and go figure since it’s deep fried, and lacked some depth of flavour. I wished I ordered the udon noodles with vegetable tempura as it would’ve been a more flavourful dish. Also the agedashi tofu is a bit too salty but tasty when paired with the white rice. The portions are very generous so order less than usual to avoid unnecessary food wastage. I would return to this restaurant as they have some vegan options and is quite affordable.

Vegan Option(s) Ordered: Mini avocado rolls, mini cucumber rolls, bento box with vegetable tempura only

Lovely staff and food is great here. Also great place to visit with families! Reasonable pricing and portions! They offer great bento sets and the sushi here is delicious.

I love the lunch menu, well priced and generous servings. It included a ramen with a side of sushi (a lot of pieces) all for $11. Perfect for the smaller stomachs. The waiters were well dressed and professional.

My new go to Japanese Restaurant! Parking here was easy with a carpark just around the corner. Red lanterns and Japanese decor filled the restaurant which made the ambience feel cosy and relaxed. The service was average which wasn't a let down as the restaurant was quite busy.

There was a Seperate vegetarian menu which was great for me! I ordered the Agedashi Tofu which was standard, the Vegetable Croquette was a miss for me and I would not order again. The Vegetable Sushi Roll was a delight and I was surprised at how large the roll was! The highlight had to be the Tempura Tofu Japanese Curry which was a great sharing dish. Again with a surprisingly large portion that tasted amazing, the pickled yellow radish made the dish stand out.

The bill came out to $36 for 3 people sharing, we paid an extra $1 due to the $40 eftpos minimum which was fine because I was expecting the bill to be over $40. The portions were generous and we left satisfied and keen for our next visit again!

This place was delicious!! It’s become my new favourite Japanese restaurant 😊 The portions are very generous; you’ll go home feeling well fed!

I went to this restaurant after having surgery. I had the biggest appetite as you do after fasting for 12 hours. As I was explaining to my partner the effects of the general anaesthetic such as sensitivity to sound and light the waitress working the shift on 09/08/17 at around 2pm rudely turned up the volume of their music on so high it made me feel light headed, So bloody rude, I know she overheard my conversation and decided to turn the music up so high I couldn't hear myself speak. When I addressed the issue, she turned the music down and did not even apologise, What great customer skills you have!
The food was served late, it tasted mediocre in comparison to all the ramen dishes I've had before. Mind you, I have tasted better. I suggest you find another ramen joint and skip this one unless you like rude service and unauthentic Japanese food.
And by the way, my partner ordered your salmon avocado roll, it was poorly prepared.
For the price we pay although it is cheap, we expect that we be served in a more respectful and welcoming way.
Unfortunately, you cannot rate a restaurant with no rating so I have rated you one which I believe doesn't do our experience justice.
It is safe to say I will be steering clear of this place regardless of the price and location, I shall take my business elsewhere like I suggest you all should as this place does not value good customer service nor respect to the people that contributes to day to day business cycle. Won't be surprised if your business goes downhill due to the low standard of service and food you provide.
Terribly upset and had the worst ramen in my life!

Decided to come back to this place after a while to satisfy my Japanese cravings locally.

Went with the taro yaki octopus balls as the entree and the negi miso chashu ramen as the main. Service was a bit bustling but otherwise they were amicable. Waiting time for the food was 8-10 minutes approx which came out simultaneously.

Octopus Balls: on first sights they looked very appetising due to its presentation with the Japanese mayo and the flakes on top complimenting the balls nicely. I could tell they were premade in advance as they used fresh octopus in the balls from its tenderness and that they just re cooked it when it's ordered so it didn't taste as fresh as it could've but it was still enjoyable to eat along with the Japanese mayo and the flakes. A good start overall.

Ramen: the miso pork broth was very thick and flavourful in miso pork which I liked but compromised the taste of the ramen noodles: due to the broth's thickness it wasn't able to absorb most of the broth into the noodles so it just tasted bland in my mouth which meant I had to eat it with lots of soup to get that miso pork flavour in my mouth. The roast pork was a bit of a letdown as it just tasted like boiled pork out of the pot and had no signs of it being straight out the roast as well as no flavour, no seasoning and no definition, just bland boiled pork. The egg also had a problem: it went cold by the time I bit into it. But on the bright side I still was able to finish the ramen bowl with some degree of relish and it was very filling for the most part.

Overall, the food itself could have room for improvements in the future but at least they are doing slightly better than average. Hanamaruya should focus more on the taste and the execution of the food before focusing on the presentation of the food. Speaking of presentation, I loved how this place is presented with the lanterns and a Japanese vibe.

It's fair to give them a 3.5 out of 5 at most and I probably would come back here again to try out more dishes as their menu is huge!
Kevin
I visit this restaurant every now and then, however recently the quality of the food has become very hit and miss. This was highlighted today, where I ordered the Chicken Nanban Bento. Despite my dish coming out in a timely manner, the chicken was very dry, as was the Agedashi tofu which barely had any sauce. I've also recently noticed that their servings of seasoned seaweed in the Bento boxes have also decreased. Overall, if you're really craving Japanese food, I would suggest to look elsewhere.

Half decent Japanese restaurant out in the suburbs. For the price and location hanamaruya will satisfy your itch for Japanese food however their huge menu I believe is what let's them down. My suggestion would be to focus on fewer dishes and refine those rather than trying for too much. Ramen lacks the love and attention of slow cooked flavourful broth which can be found at other Ramen joints closer to the city.
Lien Nguyen
One of my favorite local eats. The spicy tuna tacos are my favourite dish here! The ramen is also good and scratches my ramen itch every time. Broth is creamy and flavour some, however lacks dimension to me. The sushi here is okay - sometimes I find that it could be more fresh but with a menu this extensive, you can't have everything perfect. Overall above average joint for some delicious Japanese in the heart of bankstown.

I've passed by hanamaruya many times in the past year, however never gave it a try until tonight. To my surprise the place has a great ambience due to its nicely decorated interior. Staff were attentive right away and welcoming. The three of us came for a ramen fix and decided to grab a salmon x cucumber x avocado roll ($17) aswell. This is highly recommended. Then we waited 40 mins for three bowls of ramen. My girls and I were starving by this time and I had to ask staff about whether our ramen was coming, because other customers who came in and ordered way after us had already gotten their order. Aside from that the ramen is quite good. I had the spicy miso ramen, and the others had the teriyaki chicken ramen and pork mince x sesame ramen. Flavours are good, however there is too much of a noodle ratio to toppings.

Hanamaruya is my local Japanese! Great service, FRESH FOOD ! The price is reasonable for Japanese. I have never, ever been disappointed at all. It really is a lovely place to eat and catch-up with friends. On my birthday, recently I even had the staff sing to me and we received a complimentary birthday dish !
I want to add that my friends who live in the CBD and have a smorgasbord of Japanese restaurants to choose from always come to Hanamaruya!
I wish their menu would widen a little but even if it didn't I'm still happy.
My fave dish? Salmon Teriyaki, seaweed salad and a bottle of raspberry wine ! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
One of my go-to japanese restaurants in the Bankstown area! I absolutely love the bento boxes here and the volcano rolls are also amazing! The service here is reasonably fast and friendly and would definitely recommend for a filling lunch or dinner spot 😊

I wasn't fussed really. The waiters were clumsy (miso soup was dropped all over my dress)and the salmon sashimi, Jesus Christ they were steak sized. Salmon sashimi is supposed to be thin and delectable!!!! Overall, if you're coming for sushi, I suggest you look elsewhere.
The Grape Juice was Nice though! ☺️

Bought the chicken katsu bento. The meat looked like it was stuffed inside the crumbing and had strips of black and white. Disgusting. The taste was worst, no flavour at all and only comes from the little bits of sauce they put on. Even the salad was bland.
IshTheBlogger
Went here for a supposed dinner craving with our 13month old girl. It wasn't busy as they just opened, the waitress asked us where do we want to seat and we head to the back where we usually seat only to be told that it's only for big groups. My husband said since it wasn't busy we'll just sit there as we will only be there for half an hour. The waitress then brought the high chair for our girl but you can tell that she's not happy with what happened and said "well we have rules you know" on a condescending tone. My husband lost it and we decided to just leave as it's not worth it. I get my husband and the waitress, although if the waitress could've said it in a different way we would've understand. PLUS IT WASN'T BUSY. So yeah safe to say we're never coming back here ever. 🖓🖓🖓🖓

Waited half an hour for a main dish without receiving our entrees and after being reminded about them. Other customers that arrived after were served their dishes before us, including the same entrees that we ordered. Very disappointed.
Dave Reviews
The food here was nice but not great. I had the teriyaki chicken ramen which had flavoursome soup. The Kim chi was mediocre but the $3 price tag justifies its larger serving. The service was a little inattentive, but they were at least nice. There's definitely better Japanese around!
Henry Nguyen
Great Japanese eatery, provides quick service and quality ramen. I am not a specialist in eating ramen but so far this place is my favourite! Will continue to be coming back to enjoy a bowl of spicy miso ramen 😀

Came for lunch to try something different and ordered the chicken katsu curry and karaage don with some sushi rolls.

Wait for food wasn't bad and servings were large. Curry was great, was mild but full of flavour. Karaage chicken was tasty as well as the sushi.

Prices are cheap and staff are friendly. Will be back to try other dishes and their ramen.

Lunch deal - $11 for the chicken nanban bento. Good amount of chicken that was tender and the egg tartare sauce was nice. Only come here for the lunch specials, so my rating is based on their lunch menu. Their main menu is more extensive, however i think its expensive and the quality of the dishes don't make up for it.

Came back and menu has risen in price. The lunch deal has gone up to $13 for the chicken nanban and the day i had it, the chicken was soggy.

For dinner, tried out their ramen with little expectation. And what do you know, it was silly of me to even order it. Mind you, only ate it because of the "ramen tour promo". For $14.5, the tonkotsu ramen with karaage chicken was oh so wrong in many ways. The broth tasted weird and very salty - like msg. Noodles werent cooked correctly. The chicken was not crispy. Even the bamboo shoots were still raw. The only good thing was the egg. If you want proper ramen, go to a place that actually has japanese people making it, not vietnamese people. Service was quick, ambience was lively and location is personally good for me.

This place used to be good, but maybe i just had a poor chef who made my food. Prices increased. Wont come back.
Inoue Munchies
A lot of mixed reviews here!
I came here despite the Vietnamese surrounds as I wasn't sure what to eat anymore. It is quite average but it may be due to a fusion of Korean and Japanese staff which may have influenced on the making of the dishes.
I only had the green tea and taro ice cream, no food. They were bursting with flavours and creaminess, it's definitely something I'll return for as that was good stuff.
Daniel
A Japanese restaurant in an area predominantly with Vietnamese food.

Excellent attentive and friendly service.

I had the miso ramen: well presented, good taste, but my dad thought it was a bit salty but ate it all anyways.

The environment was clean and organized.

Price: average. My dad said it was similar to the Vietnamese restaurants pricing.

I would come back for the cleanliness and for a change from Vietnamese food in the area.
Howlinghobo
Went to Hanamaruya and got an udon with a salmon avocado roll on the side. The most basic sushi item you can possibly order. Too bad the middle of the roll was almost entirely missing avocado. There was some green stained rice and that's about it. Other sushi offerings very ordinary. Would not come again.
Mitchells00
Hanamaruya is the same Manmaruya as in Hurstville and Campsey; same menu, same prices, same food, same bowls and tables and chairs.Having said that, the food is still fantastic; miso ramen is rich and full, fresh sushi and sashimi and great bento boxes.
Brutal_AF
19/10/15
when there is so much pho in bankstown its hard to find an alternative for dinner. i enjoy dining here because their service is pretty good and food doesnt take long to come out and i also like the variety and freshness of their menu.
i like their sashimi and panko crumb (not sure) salad because the sauce isnt too heavy and it comes out the same each time. their ramen lacks a little flavor but it isnt too bad. their serving sizes are good each time we go. a salad, bento box and third dish ( like miso eggplant or $5 additional ramen) is always enough for the both of us to share.

22/11/16
****feel like they have changed owners. New menu and portions are smaller. Paid $18 for a tiny "volcano" roll that had more sauce than ingredients. Disappointed
Cecilia
We've been here plenty of times now even if it's not so local to us. The service is friendly and very informative when we ask for any recommendation. The sashimi is always fresh and delicious. The most important thing that we like about his restaurant is that they have a lot of variety of jape sea cuisines. Highly recommended!

For a Japanese restaurant, the food does not taste authentic at all. The fish and the atmosphere is smelly, and the soups taste ambiguous. If you want Japanese food look elsewhere
