Review Great Century Restaurant - Bankstown

Angel Zhang
In hindsight, we should’ve listened to the reviews before coming here for yumcha … Very limited variety in dishes and any item that is covered in rice noodle (like Cheung fun, hargow, etc) was overcooked. Service was slow as expected. The only good thing was the mango pancake which was chilled. Overall, would not recommend. The place hasn’t improved over the years.

So I went to Great Century on the weekend and I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this place. I liked that they had Karaoke upstairs, although really expensive, I liked the decor, song selection and rooms. The restaurant itself was nice, but not in a "nice fine dining" sort of way, it reminded me of something out of the 80's that was distinctly Chinese with a western influence - some people might not like this style, but I enjoyed it. The chairs and tables were a little awkward, and the sitting arrangements were a bit jagged and strange. The waiters were really forward, a little too much so, I felt slightly uncomfortable - they literally charged us down like a rugby team! It felt chaotic and awkward, unbefitting to the venue and restaurant. Instead of making us feel welcome and at ease, showing us the menu and prices, they pushed us to order and explained things very poorly. This made us feel a little stressed out and confused! The food was decent but not great, basically no menu, but authentic Chinese food made in the right way. Was it the best Chinese food I've had? No, but it was okay. I didn't really like the chili sauce I thought it was terrible, but the dumplings were decent and the speed of delivery was fast. The teapot they gave us was awful, we kept spilling tea on the table and I felt really bad, and there was no filter for the tea, so the tea leaves and bits ended up in our cups. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, I liked the Chinese movies playing in the background, It really felt like a Chinese restaurant experience in Australia, quite unusual but interesting. They were also really nice to let us stay beyond the closing time to finish our food, I have to give them credit for that. Overall they need to adjust their prices and the Karaoke upstairs needs to be cheaper - they seem too expensive for the area! At the end of the day there is a lot of competition nearby, competition that serves better quality food and is less chaotic, but despite that I would probably frequent here again, at least to see if anything has changed!

Delicious food, friendly service but the regular a ok a la carte menu can be a little pricey if you don't take make the most of the specials.

Food: 3/10 Dim Sun very average. Prawn dumpling came out undercooked. Xiao Long Bao has very thick pastry. Service: 7/10 Service is acceptable. Value: 7/10 Price Reasonable with discounts on Saturday. Overall: 4/10 Will not visit again due to quality of dim sum. Defiantly better places to go to.

Limited variety in dishes. Oversteamed dumplings - anything with a dumpling wrapper was too soft and mushy. Ordered off the menu - instead of delivering it straight to my table, waitress wandered around asking other tables if they wanted one of those dishes I had ordered..? Overpriced. Charges for tea. Tea pots really old and stained and the metal trays carrying food needs to be binned.

Delicious fresh fragrant seafood delicately dribbling down my oesophagus 🤤 friendly staff and all food served classic chinese style with invigorating ingredients

This restaurant is above board. Authentic Chinese food that can not be found anywhere else. The sweet and sour pork was to die for, haven't had anything nicer. The Peking duck was very nice. Overall this restaurant knows how to make Chinese food and I think a lot of other Chinese places need to take lessons from this one.

Had yum cha today very nice flavours.

Decent food. Some food tasted amazing but some were overly greasy and salty. Would love to come back but the cashier’s attitude was horrible.

Although the food wasn’t the best, the manager and staff was extremely friendly.

This is usually my go-to yum cha, I been going there since I was a kid till now. Sure the flavour has changed not like before but there a going to have hit and misses dish as long you alway get you go to one then shouldnt be a miss. Plus its convienent from where I live and you wouldnt find a better yum cha than this in Bankstown. The owner has not changed though.

Way too overpriced for amount of food on plate. Smelt foul. Very crammed in with all tables and other pieces of furniture/cleaning trolley's in the open room.

My family's regular yum Cha restaurant as it's convenient for my granddad and he enjoys chatting to the staff there . The food is standard yum Cha food and reasonably priced with discounts on weekdays and even Saturday (?) The service is ok. Sometimes it's hit and miss but overall it's good.

If this rating system let me this restaurant would be in the negatives. The food was mediocre and luke warm at best, but even if it had been 5 star it would not have excused the absolutely atrocious service we received. Apart from being ignored half the time the wait staff only ever came to clear away plates and not once did they come to actually give us any of the things we had asked for. My dad raised his hand to say "Excuse me" to a waiter and the guy actually pushed my dad's hand away and brushed past him. I get that we went there on a particular busy day but behaviour like that is just plain rude.

Very disappointing.
Came to eat fresh seafood and saw that there was a Crab Special advertised. Was then told that they had "run out" of the crab for that special (on a Saturday night and a restaurant that only had 3 tables filled- which is either poor planning or a blatant lie). Bought another type of crab.
Then asked if we could have the peking duck special instead since the crab special had run out. Told that the crab that we had purchased was being sold to us at "a special price" so we weren't entitled to any other special deals. This "special price" was only mentioned to us conveniently at this stage and there was no record of it anywhere...
Food took close to 45mins to come out
Crab came out, flavour was OK but crab was lukewarm. I find it hard to believe that freshly cooked crab would be lukewarm so I have my doubts about this place. I did not make a big deal out of this because I was tired of hearing nonsensical excuses by this stage.
Also ordered a tofu dish that was too salty
Charged 15 dollars for noodles with crab which was also not mentioned but assume that this is not uncommon though
Would NEVER come back here again! Poor customer service and too many convenient excuses and general sense of untrustworthiness from this place.

Late review: I went here for lunch about a week ago on a Sunday and while it isn't the best yum Cha I've had, it's decent. I was lucky to come in at about 10:30 on a Sunday morning before the crowds and the food was still fresh and hot which was great. There was a great variety of yum Cha dishes and I was pleased with my all time favourite dish: chicken feet. The marinade was done well. Couldn't fault many of the dishes except for the xiao long bao which is the first I've seen in a yum Cha place and it's dough was dry and the meat inside was not good. I know not to trust xiao long bao that isn't made fresh on the spot when ordered in future. Overall, I think this place is good for yum Cha in the Bankstown area but of course outside of Bankstown there's better places.

Hot, steaming hargow? No. Not even mildly warm. Cold. Just cold.

What's worse than cold hargow? That's right, cold chicken feet.

Our bill was $29.35 and the waitress decided to round up our bill on the EFTPOS machine thinking we wouldn't notice? Is this even allowed? Isn't $29.35 in no need of rounding up or did the education system fail me?

So done bruh. Gonna stick to Cabramatta for Yum Cha from now on. This is what I get for trying new things and trying to have nice things. Sadness.

Service was quick and accomodating. Somehow not everything in the menu was available that day. The fried pork dumpling (ham sui gok) had nice sticky texture but it'd taste better if they gave more fillings in it. The egg custard bun (liu sa bao) had thick and chewy skin and the filling was more like sweet custard paste rather than the salty flowy one (I actually prefer the latter). The baked BBQ pork bun was nice with slightly crisp on the outside while chewy soft on the inside.
Horribleexperience
Overcharge/bad customer service. Such a horrible experience. We went there on sat morning around 11 am and we asked for a seat away from the door (its very windy) and the restaurant wasn't full at that time with plenty of seats Available. The manager refused to give us seats at the back and later we found out that the people behind us sat in the table we want. Ok that is fine and the food is SO-SO. The owner (the lady who stands behind the counter) didn't even look at us and smiled as if she looked down on us. And she overcharged us for a speial dim sum! Which we didn't order!!!! We ordered anything very basic nothing special and ended up with 6 dishes to a ridiculous prices in the end. We were so furious and we will NEVER ever come back and so be aware don't spend your money there NOT WORTH IT!

GROSSLY Over price on Rice & Soft drink. We went there for dinner yesterday... foods price seem to be ok , but beware if you need rice to eat with. 1 bucket will cost you $9 & 1 jug of soft drink is $18... totally ridiculous

The food was alright tasting and steaming hot which is a tick from me until............. It came to ordering the spring rolls. I rarely order spring rolls and on that certain day I had the sudden urge to eat spring rolls. It just look so crunchy and tasty from the outside. Then as I took my first bite, the SHOCKING thing happened. At first I thought it was a bamboo shoot but then it was too hard to be that. It was a TOOTHPICK ! How did a toothpick get into the spring roll stuffing is what bothers me. Was someone picking at their teeth whilst mixing the ingredients. Quite disturbing in fact. DISGUSTING! I'm quite turned off spring rolls for now. I was so disgusted that I didn't even had the chance to take

Nice food, good place to go.. I really like their steamed eels, chicken feet and egg tarts. Right next to a big free car park but try to bet there before 11:30am or will be hard to find a spot for Yum Cha. Price is good, 20% discount mon - thurs for Yum Cha.

Not recommended. Dishes are expensive compared to its quality and too much oily. And the bill was not clear. One more thing, the mango cake was smellie and cant eat at all. Also, the tea supposed to be free in other places but here is costy. To conclude this, i will never ever come back again and NOT recommend to anyone or you guys should think twice before coming this place....Unhappie....

Food was nice, but it was expensive. I can get
more and better for a lot less at other places. We got plastic cutlery, what's up with that? Also the place could do with a bit of cleaning.

Great Yum Cha. I highly recommend. This place is well worth the travel down to Bankstown. Great value and good selection.

Try the crab. Highly recommend the Singapore chilli crab here accompanied with fried bread dumplings and broccoli egg dish. I always order this when I come here. Never disappointed.

A consistent Chinese restaurant. Nothing phenomena like some of the newer ones in other areasl, but after 5 years of going there, the Harvest Moon dinner we had last night was very, very good.

Always excellent. Have been going to this restaurant for Yum Cha since I was a kid and have always had nothing but impeccable service and food. Always our go-to restaurant for special occasions and the regular Yum Cha craving.
