Review Japan Inn - Beaumaris

Really recommend this restaurant, taste good and serve very well. All dishes are fresh and delicious, keep the raw food’s taste. Would be back again.

This was our first visit to Japan Inn. Even on Tuesday night was fully booked. Obviously people like it. Unfortunately I can't give 5 stars because there were some things which are possible to improve. Service was good but it looks creazy to serve people with 2 staff only, running from table to table and trying to be organized and please everyone. Athmosphere is ok but somehow cold without any music at background. We have decided to take banquet. Tempura was tasteless, I believe there was no any seasoning. Likely they never run of soy sauce.

This restaurant is our family favourite and quickly becoming my friends favourite too. The food is ALWAYS great! Beautifully presented and so fresh.

It's been our first time at Japan Inn on recommendation by extended family. We had a meal as a family. Service was fab, food fantastic, for a reasonable price. The kids have already chosen what they will be having next time. We will definitely be back again soon. Big thumbs up from all 4 of us!

Food is really good. Plating is nice

The food is excellent and the main reason for coming here would be to taste what the chef can do. Unfortunately this is offset by the service. On a busy night the restaurant is understaffed. They are reactive rather than proactive - you need to call the waiter over if you want something otherwise be prepared to wait a long time for service. Also noticed there are spider webs on the ceiling and mosquitos on the walls which detracts from the atmosphere. Certainly some areas to improve.

I like the place. Food is really good, value for money is spot on, quality is premium. Wine list has a good selection as has the Sake list. They do not make a fuss if you change the content of the Bento boxes (Wife is vegiterian with fish). Sometimes they can be a bit slow as they are run off their feet with orders. All in all a good and pleasant evening.

Food was great. Service was excellent. The menu prices were amazing.

I have read the scathing reviews for this lovely neighbourhood restaurant and can't believe they are talking about the same place that we regularly eat at. The service might not be what you get in a top city restaurant, but it is always friendly. The gyoza are among the best in Melbourne and all dishes are tasty, well cooked and beautifully presented. On top of all that it is great value.

Food is good if you get that far but service is terrible. Last time we went, despite booking, the restaurant was full and we were shown to a table normally used for cleaning up at the entrance to the kitchen. We were informed thats all there was available and no apology. We didnt bother staying and will think seriously before ever trying again

Fresh and quality food
Good customer service

Great Japanese food in Melbourne

The staff in here so rude and food arrived slowly and especially the old lady really really rude.
The dishes still get the dirty and smell on the top. Never come back
Jimbotr
Food arrived sporadically - no one in the restaurant was happy with service or quality - they forgot orders for the table, the owner stood at the front counting her money like a greedy piglet and was glad they stuffed up the bill at the end as we were a group of 10 and probably paid for $50 worth - drinks included - id go back for their cheap incompetence

Food is really good! Especially the nigiris and teriyaki beef was perfect! Only negative thing was the music. They had one song in a loop and it gets annoying after awhile.

This has always been a second home to me - very local and delicious authentic Japanese cuisine! Some of the best you'll find! (stole these pics from dad)

We love coming here!! All the food is absolutely delicious. Great quality and great value for money. Sometime when it gets busy, the service can be a little slow but it’s certainly well worth the wait!

So many Japanese restaurants are middle of the road (at best) but here the produce, cooking and presentation are very good. However, its busy, very noisy and the service is not polished but the food and reasonable price almost makes up for it. I suggest visiting mid week when it is not so busy. The deluxe bento box was good value. The nasi dengarku, seafood yakisoba, duck terriyaki and a large mixed sashimi/sushi platter are all outstanding. The variety and presentation of the sashimi & sushi were excellent and the quantities adequate. It would score much higher if the venue wasn't so noisy and the service was better.
Neil
Very disappointed with the experience. It started badly with a rude receptionist, and despite pre-booking a table we weren’t booked in and were made to feel it was an effort for them to find us a table.

Food was ordinary and lacked flavour but there was plenty of it. Beef was chewy and soup was cold but the sushi was nice. The dessert for two of us was served on the same plate with only one set of cutlery.

Sadly, I won’t go back.
FoodieT
Very disappointing. We ordered the banquet and the food was very bland. The order also came in the wrong order to what was on the menu. The miso soup was cold. And the meat was very tough and grisly. The seafood tepenakaye was tasteless.

While the waiters were very polite the person who greeted us at the entrance was rather rude. On top of this she was coughing and spluttering as she served us. Very unhygienic. If you are sick stay home.

We will not be returning again.

Excellent food. Great service. Wonderful ambient. I went there with my husband and our friends and truly enjoyed every single moment at the restaurant.

AMAZING JAPANESE FOOD. All the flavours on the plate blended beautifully together. The service was good considering they were busy and had limited staff on but they were friendly enough. My partners first time having Japanese food and he loved it too. Will be coming back. New favourite

Very happy with this choice of local restaurant.
Nice friendly staff.
Got the set menu
Miso soup vv nice
Gyoza good
Sushi sashimi nice but nothing to rave about
Very nice tempura
Highlight was The stir fry steak was a to die for dish, generous serving so tasty and tender... mmm
Jovial and loud clientele that night :-)

So sad my long time fav local Japanese restaurant has changed hands. It's a mere shadow of its former self. Food quality and presentation is very ordinary, service poor and as the hubby predicted the order came out incorrect..
Kat
I love visiting this place when we're in the area, it's not a well known restaurant if you're not local and doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is delicious and the presentation of the meals is a highlight. I tried the tempura bento box this time which was made up of tempura veggies and prawns, 3 slices of sashimi, 2 gyoza, diced beef and rice. I would've liked a miso soup to go with it plus another slice of sashimi but nonetheless it was a good size serving and everything was super delicious and fresh tasting. The dessert menu needs an update, it had only 2 really unappealing items - green tea ice cream and wasabi orange cheesecake - so we went elsewhere. Despite that, I still highly recommend, prices are reasonable too - 5 of us had drinks, entrees and mains for $150. You'll need to book as the place is always full on weekends

I love Japan Inn having been twice now in almost as many weeks! The food is exceptional. So many Japanese restaurants are middle of the road (at best) but here the produce, cooking and presentation are spot on. Yes, its busy, very noisy and the service is not polished but the food and reasonable price makes up for it. On the first visit I had the deluxe bento box which, based on the menu description, I had expected to feature sashimi. It did but only a dissapointingly small number of salmon slices. However, it was fresh and the rest of the box was superb. The next visit with friends we explored the menu and tried nasi dengarku, seafood yakisoba, duck terriyaki and a large mixed sashimi/sushi platter all of which were outstanding. The variety and presentation of the sashimi & sushi were excellent (see photo) and the quantities quite adequate. Booking is essential as this spot is very popular with locals.

Always good food and friendly, professional service.
Not too busy being early on a Tuesday evening, straight after a long weekend.
Plenty of parking nearby. A steady stream of take away customers tonight.
Entrees of Tatsuta Age, Tempura Prawns and Teriyaki Beef followed by a Sushi-Sashimi Moriowase and a Sizzle of King Prawns.
So full. No room for dessert tonight but that's okay.
Thank you to Shirley and staff for yet another memorable dining experience.

Made a booking for a Wednesday evening at 1900hrs. We had to wait 10 minutes to be seated as there were several groups in front of us who were also waiting and there were only two staff members that we could see, who were responsible for take away orders, payments, waitressing and seating customers.
The restaurant looks lovely and the menu looked good - we were excited to try the restaurant out. However we waited and waited... After 20 minutes of being seated at our table and no service to even ask if we wanted to order drinks, we eventually asked a waitress if we could place our order. We continued to wait for another 25 minutes of no service before we gave up and walked out. During that wait we heard other people complaining they had not been given their drink orders and people waiting lengthy times for food.
The food we did see come past looked good.
Warren
Didn't get the chance to try the food, approached by a rude woman, who I think was the owner, I just walked out terrible attitude. Won't bother trying again.
Kym Stub
Food is generally good, but when ordering takeaway, "35-40 mins" always ends up as well over an hour.
Sashimi and sushi is always tasty and quite fresh.
Service can definitely be improved.
Dan
Pretty good. Love the location and the layout. For far flung Japanese, this is your best bet. Always busy and for good reason. Sushi is nice as are the hot dishes.
Az Luxmoore
Food was delicious, but by 930pm all the other patrons had left and they packed all the tables up around us making us feel like we had to leave. We hadn't even finished main course!
Bradley Forde
What a pleasant surprise, doesn't look like much from the outside but once inside it was amazing. From the time we got there to the time we left people didn't stop coming in. Food was excellent can't wait to go back.

A bright bubbly place in Keys St so parking is relatively straight forward.

I had warned them that my elderly father in law was coming and they arranged a table towards the front and even had a seat cushion for his added comfort. Nice touch.

The place was very busy (Saturday night) and they were turning away people so pays to book.

The food - menu had all the usual suspects so quite a good choice. We had some salmon & scallop maki rolls, "japanese spring rolls", and the whiting tempura. Then followed with mains of fillet steak with ginger (which was excellent very subtle use of ginger) and katsu chicken which was very tender.

All the food was good, serves were generous and very fairly priced.

Service was pretty good given they looked run off their feet. No delays in getting food, if anything they could have been spread out a bit more.

We BYO'd so didn't look at the wine & sake list to make a comment.
Vicky
The food is cheap here compared to most good japanese place and I can see why. The dishes don't seem to be that fresh and they use cheap cuts. There a better japanese places aroundIt is run by chinese. However the staff are nice and service is friendly.

Disappointed. My family of 4 had a 7.30 reservation. Upon arrival we were informed that our table was not available for 5 minutes and we were asked to wait on the street.
25 minutes later still waiting on the street we were taken to our table. The noise in the restaurant was unbearable.
They mucked up our entrées which arrived 1/2hr later which were tasty.
Very slow and rude wait staff
Matthew Marshall
Nice experience to sit in, but had take away twice and it was a disaster. Wrong dish when I got home, then hard work trying to get some assistance in the phone. Last time here for sure.

I could eat here every week. Wonderful food and friendly service is the key to the success of this little restaurant, every dish looks amazing and so appetizing. Love the way you can get a bit of this and that until you're full, l have my favourite dishes, but like to try new things and flavours, so if you want to try an intimate place to dine l can recommend Japan Inn highly. The Lyon family.
Maddy
Dined in with friends the other night and was very impressed. Everything we ordered was delicious!! Would definitely recommend and eat here again.
Glenn
Always fresh. I've been going here for years and still love it, the food is always fresh, simple fresh cuisine and happy service
Appetite For Life...
Consistantly Good. We go here for special occasions and birthdays, usually order the banquet and drink wine. It is fantastic food and buzz. After a recent trip to Japan, I realise just how authentic Japan Inn is (such a rare find in the 'burbs).
The service isn't great, sometimes you need to call the waiter for things, although I guess this is just reflective of how busy the restaurant is and the staff are always under the pump.
Highly recommend this place if you're in the SE suburbs.

Great Banquet. Enjoyable, efficient service, presentation pleasing, we loved the miso beef
Pete
Poor service - our entree and mains came out together and when this was pointed out to the staff they offered to "warm up" our steak dish if it went cold... Older lady who took our payment did not say anything to us and just handed across our bill; when I told her about our meals she just stared blankly at me - food good but our money won't be spent there again anytime soon.

Japanese "Jem" ..... We visit regularly and enjoy every time at most affordable prices for an easy local meal .i love the deluxe bento's mix of tastes whilst my wife has experimented through most dishes without any below standard experience !
Yes it gets noisy when busy but worth it to have such a great meal at such great value
Tim
Kel
Love this place ! Great price great food.
Love the teriyaki salmon and the sushi is wonderful too .
Matthew Rossi
The WORST sushi I've ever eaten (or not eaten and thrown away as it turned out).
Agadashi tofu horrible and dry, sushi which was requested to be wasabi free had a far more than a standard amount with the sashimi product bring of extremely low (stringy) quality.

I never believed myself to be the type of person who would go to the internet to vent frustrations but this place was disgracefully bad to the point where I felt compelled to create an account and write a post.

Please for you own sake avoid Japan Inn at all costs.

Sincerely,

One very hungry one off customer.
Gracegordon
The best. This is an amazing place. Very cheap and worth all of the money. Try the miso it's AMAZING!¡
Just great everything.
WOW JUST EAT IT
Cat3172
Neat place with helpful staff.

Great byo wine. Small portions so need a few to satisfy you.

Beef was a little tough but chicken looked nice and more decent size.

Overall okay but not amazing Japanese
Phil
Consistently nice and yes it's busy. We have been going for 5 years and the service you get is about your own attitude...be patient and be nice and you will get the lovely service back...often people expect too much.
The food is great and the price is good...

Spot on !! Best Japanese food. I came here with my friends mid week and this was probably the best japanese food i had in a while. The staff were friendly and up for a conversation, service was great and the food was well worth its money. I would highly recommend the large sushi sashimi, it was fresh and beautifully presented. Highly recommended for a cheap eat during the week with exceptional food !!!! will most certainly come again

Service is hit & miss - mostly miss!!!. Disappointing experience, restaurant busy, not enough staff, had to ask 3 times over 40 minute peroid for our drinks. Main course took 45 minutes to arrive after entree & one of our mains was taken to the wrong table so had to be made again which meant we ate our mains at different times. The wait staff were running between tables & the kitchen - all in all a chaotic vibe with little attention to the detail of customer service. On the positive side the food is quite good & reasonably priced

Very unhappy. We have been going to this restaurant for at least 10 years. Booked a table for a saturday night and arrived on time only to find no table available and the place was so noisey and crowded. The waitress didn,t care about our situation and we were angry as we had driven all the way from Frankston and then had to drive back. I contacted the owner who didn,t give a damn-never going back there again, shame on them as we had been good customers over the years.

Mimi & Ria's Japanese Rating Guide. Thursday 10th May - Japan Inn in Beaumaris

Not authentic Japanese.

Vietnamese waitresses.

Cooked in copious amounts of oil and msg, would have received awesome results if it had been from China Bar.

Result: 19/5/50 = Iz Okai. Excellent food, great value, very polite and efficient staff. Highly recommended.

Rosemary. Food ok but the service was appalling

GREAT FOOD GREAT VALUE. I have lived around the corner from this restaurant for 20 years. I have also been eating at the restaurant for 10 years. Although slow service during busy days and lack of decor, the food at Japan Inn is ALWAYS delicious, fresh and in generous servings for the price. The staff are always lovely and are always willing to chat. Anyone who complains about this place clearly doesnt understand the value for money, is extremely FUSSY and if you want anything better of what you describe, that will cost you $200 for dinner at a top restaurant.
Louis Alexander
Modern, Clean and Bright. Ate at this busy Japenese restaurant, mid week with the sister. The service was brilliant and the ambience was intimate, but casual.

I ordered sushi and sashimi: fresh and presented beautifully.

My sister ordered a special vegetarian bento box.

The only qualms were that the serving sizes were a tad small, and the water tasted like it had been infused with some kind of cleaning substance.
Albany Wong
Below par, will not come back.... Ordered a tempura prawn bento box and katsu chicken salad both take away.

Bento box came with ONE piece of tempura prawn and several pieces of vegetable and FOUR sad looking pieces of fruit.

Katsu chicken was dry and came with barely and salad.

This place obviously had no pride in their food and zero passion for customer satisfaction. Including one piece of tempura prawn is simply not good enough.

Yet another disappointing chinese run japanese surbuban place.
Jessiej
Reading the menu, I was nervous about the price and food choices, so descided to give the tempura bento box after hearing bento box reviews on urbanspoon. Was very, very impressed! Lots of varitity and plenty of food! Highly recommend!!

Authentic japanese...beautiful. Absolutly love visiting Japan Inn...the decor is a little bit dated but the food is always amazing. I will continue to go there time and time again.

What a great surprise!. A real jem of bayside, recommended by a friend and got a lot more for than what we expected. Not really a massive fan of japanese food but this place really changed my view on the cuisine. Very reasonably priced as well, quick friendly service. overall a great experience
Yum
Very Yummy. We all had the Bento Box as a takeaway - they were a delicious choice and very good value too. Miso Soup and Gyoza were great too. Can't wait to go back and try some more things on the menu.
Jb
Terrible. Having just returned from Japan last week, I was disappointed by yet another fake Japanese restaurant run by Chinese people who don't know how to make Japanese food and skimp on the sauces and mirin- heck the sushi didn't even have wasabi in it.
Feigy Simpson
Not bad. I had the banquet with a friend it was quite cheap $30 or $40 each good value for money worth trying if u are a local
D
JUST GREAT. Japan Inn does it every time for us. As big Japanese fans we can say that Japan Inn does not fail in any aspect. Maybe don't go for a 'special' night out as the decor is simple and the lights are bright. Despite these minor flaws it is warm and together with the service a great overall experience. The food is always top notch, which makes this place a hidden treasure!
Lana
It was all good. The food, the ambience and the service. Well priced for good, traditional Japanese food.
Monky
Great food, great service & very pleasant decor. Try the salmon rolls, they taste amazing, they melt in your mouth & have a wonderful sesame crunch.
Deborah
If u want great, authentic Japanese food at affordable prices, this is the place. Quick service too & lovely staff
