SERENDIPITY

The meaning of serendipity is luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for. That is the perfect way of describing how Maurizio Barba and his family happened upon the property at 457 Balcombe Rd Beaumaris last year. Maurizio had previously sold his former café business in Seaview, when he happened upon the perfect opportunity to reinvest, and bring to life the eatery now known as Chino & Co 457, Balcombe Rd, in the pretty little village of Beaumaris.

Set back off the road with good 3P parking facilities, plus other free parking in the streets around, it has turned out to be a popular meeting place for the locals.

I met Maurizio at his café today, to see how things were going since he established the place, five months ago in January.

The outside chairs and tables looked inviting in the unseasonal winter sunshine, and two or three clients had chosen to eat there.

I went inside. It was full of chattering locals, all enjoying the fare on offer. Three staff members were kept busy and service was brisk and efficient, using a computerised system.

The décor is simple. Blue is the predominant colour on the otherwise plain walls, with a border of wooden frieze running around. The tables are plain varnished wood, with bentwood chairs. Simplicity with a natural baseline, which works well to create a comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere.

The only adornment on the walls are two large pictures painted by a local artist, Fiona Slater, in the form of two very large canvases, which are for sale to discerning buyers.

Maurizio told me he came originally from Naples , with his family, and he is currently in partnership with his younger brother Max. The third partner in Chino & Co is Kirsty, a former staff member from the café in Seaview.

The menu consists of a set all day breakfast, a special feature being the Chino Breakfast, which sounds comprehensive to say the least, and at $19.50 is excellent value.

Another difference to the usual menu is Jo’s Pulled Pork Benedict, which Maurizio assured me was very popular. At $17.90 I can see why!

Lunch kicks in at 11:30am, adding enticing salads, and Wagyu beefburgers, chicken burgers and even a prawn burger, all with salad accompaniments.

There is also a Specials menu that change weekly, so choice is never a problem.

To finish off your experience, invest in one of Chino’s excellent speciality coffees, by Zest. You will not be disappointed!

The kids are not forgotten, and are catered for with the usual toasties, pancakes and burgers, which although catholic in breadth, that is more to pander to the current tastes of today’s youth. Give the people what they want. A winning formula!

I asked Maurizio if there was anything more he wanted to do with Chino & Co and he said he was hoping to develop the back section and the outside area for the coming summer season, and introduce evening sessions to include special evening themed events, which would be enhanced by the sale of wines etc. Hopefully, Maurizio and his staff will continue to serve the tastes of the café society of Beaumaris, and it is surely true to say that serendipity works both ways, as the folks of Beaumaris who happen upon this eatery will testify. Check it out folks!!

 CHINO & CO is open Weekdays 6:30am – 5pm.

Shattering the stale suburban cafe culture. Style, substance and kick ass coffee. Beaumaris's newest addition is a much welcomed breath of contemporary air. Great, well considered menu. Delicious delights at every turn. Do yourself a favour and check out Chino & Co

Mere weeks ago this was the dingiest of scary old milk bars where people would buy pity milk from because the owners were nice. And now it has been remade into a light and bright and slightly healthy seeming, completely inoffensive cafe. Perfect for the location. Warning: the breakfast burger comes on a croissant which was neither expected nor appreciated.
