WOW, absolutely amazing cakes, bread and lunch options. Upon entrance we were greeted by friendly staff and a stunning collection of meticulously decorated cakes, slices and the smell of freshly baked bread was heavenly. My family is very fussy with their food we critique based on presentation, taste and delivery and we weren't disappointed one bit.
We had the Club Sandwich and I had the Thyme Mushrooms which was just delicious, portions were very generous which was nice to see too. The coffee was made to perfection also with beautiful milk art to finish off our lovely wholesome lunch.
The only concern I had was the hygiene of food sitting uncovered close to tables but I appreciated the oven to plate concept which I loved and makes it look homemade and rustic!!
I look forward to my next visit to Belgrave, it's a place I will definitely recommend to many family & friends.
Thank You for making our trip to the Tesselaar Tulip Festival a memorable one...
Best coffee in town and the cakes and pastries are to die for. My nephew said “best burger I’ve ever eaten, best restaurant he’s been to!”
Owned and run by lovely local family who actively care for the community and even organise ‘run for the hills’ fundraiser as well as endless donations to worthy causes!
I walked in for a quick feed with my husband and couldn’t have anything on the menu as I am allergic to onions also a vegetarian luckily Adam (assuming owner or manager?) was amazingly kind and suggested to make a special burger for us.
In 7 years I’ve been in Australia and visited endless amounts of cafes and restaurants I was always getting the ‘I’m sorry’ ‘apologies for the inconvenience’ etc but never the solution as simple as it is to do so! Nice to know one person in not just being a square
As an owner of a catering business I really appreciate your customer service Adam I wish more would do the same! Highly recommend
Had lunch there yesterday and the food was gorgeous. Generous portion and fantastic quality. We will be back.
I recommend the breakfast burger and a hand crafted milkshake....perfect breakfast after a morning trail
This is my second visit. First time was for afternoon tea where I indulged with an ice- coffee and a meringue. The ice-coffee was a dessert in itself with real cream and high quality ice- cream. The meringue was delicious. There is a little play corner for the littlies. The other day I went for breaky. Upon entering you greeted with the delicious scent of fresh bread and display of tasty treats. I had the avo and pumpkin smash w two poached eggs which was served on slices of one oftheir specialty loaf. The servings are plentiful and very delicious- I would definitely go back for seconds. Staff are friendly and the decor simple and neat.
The Blacksmith Burger was full of flavour and well worth the price. Staff were friendly and provided excellent service. I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and I will certainly be going back. Coffee was good too!!
When my sister had an anxiety attack trying to place her order she was treated with nothing but kindness. The waitress was lovely and understanding, and later followed up by drawing her a gorgeous picture with a note saying "you're awesome!"
The best service I have ever seen, and cheered my sister up incredibly. Amazing job!
Amazing selection of cakes, croissants, and handcrafted breads. Awesome burgers and great coffee . Highly recommend the Lot burger and the Big breakfast.
Amazing cakes and pastries! Almond croissant to die for! And now amazing burgers!! Super happy with my falafel burger and they were happy to accommodate me by swapping it around with the usual beef patty.
This bakery makes the best bread in all the land seriously it’s amazing. Which is why it’s so hard to understand why their burgers are so awful I really don’t get it. They are sloppy and wet and tasteless. I wish they could improve this as their bakery is of a very high standard.
Had two of "The Blacksmith burger" and OMG amazing!! Other burger joints hardly fill their burgers yet charge a fortune but this one was soo full that bits would be literally falling out as you ate (in a good way) and was worth the price ($16.50 each). Everything was cooked to perfection including the chips that came with a delicious garlic aioli. Worth the trip!
Great burgers, great service and that shake is to die for!
We came here the other day for a lunch date. The meals were delicious and the staff were friendly and quick to deliver our meals. We spent $29.67 for the meals and drinks. The cappuccino and hot chocolate was nice. The decor of the place was very interesting, we liked to read what happened on the old newspapers being displayed behind the table glass.
We came to this busy little cafe for breakfast & it was a great find. We ordered baa baa Benny & firey Benny with a side of chips & two lattes. The kids saw the little toy corner which was great & meant we could have breakfast in peace. The firey Benny was good but the spicy salsa with hollandaise sauce overpowered the whole dish & I wish there wasn’t so much of it. The baa baa benny was faultless. The coffees were just spot on. The service was ok & they were a bit busy. We would definitely come back!
I stopped in to try out their new burger menu and was definitely impressed.
The Blacksmith Burger ($16.50)
8.5/10
This is a big burger, it will fill you up. Meat patty was very tender with lots of cheese. I’m not usually a fan of egg on burgers but it’s a good addition to the aioli, cheese & bacon combo. The tomato relish doesn’t really seem like it fits with the rest of the burger, I think lettuce/tomato and a good BBQ sauce would make it a much better burger …..but I still loved it and will probably order it again.
Sweet Potato Wedges w/paprika aioli ($8)
9.5/10
The test of good fries/wedges is that they don’t need sauce…and these Sweet potato wedges smash that test, some of the best I’ve had. They come in a big serving size, plenty for 2 people and the aioli is really tasty.
Overall – Very tasty and high quality burger menu, generous servings and reasonably priced. Check this place out if you want a good burger in the south east.
We went for a drive to Belgrave the other weekend to visit the Puffing Billy and also check out the Black Smith Bakery. We loved how wholesome everything was and the display of house made cake, pastries and bread made me so excited. We sat down for brunch and was taken aback but also happy at how large the portions were. The food was very simple but flavours were hearty and honest, the burger buns are also house made and my friend loved the black bun brioche. After our meal we also took away the lemon checkered tart as well as the passionfruit cheesecake, priced at such a reasonable price , if you swing by you must give these sweet treats a try !
Thanks so much for having us
I’m loving these warm days of early spring and we got to enjoy the drive out to Belgrave to day to try out the menu at The Blacksmith Bakery. Being kid morning on a weekday the cafe was full of
Mothers and babies but we were able to grab a booth and ordered up a storm from an interesting menu.
As I walked to the counter to place my order I couldn’t go past the freshly baked Cinnamon scrolls without being tempted so one of th se came out first and was fresh with a brioche interior and a lovely flakey croissant exterior, drizzled with icing.
We had this with a Chai coconut latte, this flavour sensation was full of spice with a slight chilli after burn. A real winner.
Our skinny latte was full flavoured and deliciously hot just the way I like it.
Our brunch mains today consisted of The Hangover & The Apple Crumble Porridge.
The hangover consisted of flavour packed mushrooms, scrambled eggs, maple bacon, a drizzle of a light holandaise and a tomato relish that brings it all together. The black brioche bun that it was served on looked and tasted terrific. The mushroom last were very flavoursome and I enjoyed the sweet maple bacon.
The Apple Crumble Porridge was a vanilla and coconut porridge, cleverly paired with a cinnamon & seed crumb, dollops of lemon gel and lightly poached apple and strawberries. Not only was this pretty dish delicious without mixing all of the elements, it was absolutely delicious when all incorporated. I love the porridge combinations this round in the colder seasons but will be a shame to say goodbye when the warmer weather arrives.
We finished our brunch with a Mango smoothly. Mango isn’t in season yet but this was a nice smoothie non the less and was dairy free but still smooth and creamy. It wasn’t overly sugar strong so was a nice way to finish the meal.
Thanks to the team for great service for inviting us in to try the menu here.
I was thrilled to be invited to Blacksmith. Initially I was perturbed by the distance but realised I’m willing to travel that far towards the city to brunch in South Yarra why not travel the same length of time away from the city and avoid traffic altogether. You can always make a day of it exploring the pretty region and it’s definitely an experience in and of itself visiting this cafe.
Brunch slash burgers slash French patisserie was an intriguing proposition. Certainly they do two of them well (we didn’t try the burgers) and it’s fabulous to see such high caliber desserts in suburban areas. There was fresh bread and croissants aplenty and such a decadent array of cakes I wondered how I would possibly choose.
This is a order and pay at the counter set up and we were lucky to be one of the first to try the new menu. We started with coffee and the mulled apple cider (non alcoholic) this was a great choice for Melbourne winter and tasted like Christmastime.
We chose the hashtag benny and rainbow road. I liked that we were given proper knives to cut through the yummy sourdough. This aptly named colourful dish was a vibrant combination of beetroot purée, smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, feta and roast pumpkin. Very tasty. My husband enjoyed his Benedict but we did say no bacon jam and unfortunately it came with. Not sure why this has happened twice to us this weekend but it’s quite upsetting if you are vegetarian or don’t eat bacon for religious reasons.
We pretty much forgave them the bacon on account of the pure indulgence that was the cake selection. We were able to try the lemon tart, salted caramel peanut, lemon checkers (lemon curd, white chocolate and raspberry jelly), the Black Forest tart, the pear frangipane and the raspberry mousse dome with passionfruit and mango jelly. Spectacular would be an understatement. These stunningly presented cakes were perhaps eclipsed only by their unbelievably delicious taste. So many perfect textures working with all the flavours from rich and creamy chocolate mousses to zingy lemony curds to perfectly balanced berry jellies. Well worth the journey, even if you are coming from interstate I’d wager
Bhudda bowl!
Super flavoursome
Perfect little cafe to go into after a walk of the Dandenongs. Very warm and inviting
Also a great selection of fresh bread and pastries.
Fast service and great coffee.
Definitely enjoy my experience here
This place is better then the reviews say. It’s the kind of place where you help yourself to water and go up to the counter to order but the staff were so friendly and didnt mind all my questions. The burgers are so tasty as well. A really cute and casual place to grab a bite to eat
Just came in here today to try something sweet, I got the vegan snickers slice and it was delicious! Only downside is it was 7 dollars which is overpriced, it's not massive.
The numerous freshly baked bread on the racks. with paper bags ready for you to pick. The endless choices of tarts, scrolls,. slices and cakes. That's on top of the display cabinets of quiche, arancini balls, sandwiches and rolls. But all that wouldn't matter if it weren't for the constant friendly smiles of the staff that makes this café well worth a visit.
Great little cafe in Belgrave. Wonderful and good to see how they made all the food and treats on site. Delicious food and would definitely recommend :)
Very busy cafe in Belgrave, great coffee have their own bakery/ patisserie downstairs so all the sourdough breads, cakes and tarts made on site. Often have to queue for a table. Highly recommend
Good coffee and great bakery selection. The Portuguese tarts are to die for, and the breads are delicious. The staff are lovely too, always smiling and friendly.
This little place was great.
We had the veggie pizza and the blacksmith burger and both were absolutely delicious - the pizza was slightly underseasoned, which suits us, as sometimes food can be over seasoned.
Coffee and hot chocolate was very well done too.
Music choice and atmosphere made for a really cosy and intimate experience on a cold rainy day!
Great place and perfect location!. The MOST AMAZING BURGERS, baked goods and the croissant are the best we've found in Melbourne. Highly recommend.
Been to The Blacksmith a few times now when in Belgrave. It has a yummy range of food, desserts, coffee was good (and I am fussy about temperature) and it is kid friendly. Love the petits fours style dessert selection - so pretty in the display case along with the delicious cakes and pastries, which are hard to come by in the area. I have tried a few cafes in Belgrave/Upwey/Tecoma area... and this is by far the best. Well worth a try if you're in Belgrave.
One word - YUM
We had burgers here & they were simply delicious!!! Cannot understand why this place does not have better reviews however order from the burger menu & you won't be disappointed. At first it seemed a tad pricey (for hamburgers) but when they arrived at our table we could understand why. Fresh, gourmet burgers & massive servings. Finger licking good!!!
Also ordered a side of spicy eggplant wedges from the specials board & they were simply divine!!! Here's to hoping they become a staple on the menu!!!
Have only just moved to the mountain from the city and have been pleasantly surprised by the amazing food in the mountain. The Blavksmith being one of them! We The blacksmith and Blast Furnace and we were really happy with them! Chips were a teensy bit undercooked but the burgers made up for it. I have never been a fan of a brioche bun, but wow these guys have turned me! Super soft in a fresh bakery way, not a McDonald's way. Guys behind the counter super lovely to deal with an overall a gorgeous little atmosphere! Will definitely be back!!
Hands down the best coffee in Belgrave and the friendliest barista in the world, Kathy. I've been coming here for years for food and coffee and now with the added dinner menu Belgrave finally has a burger bar that's on par with any high end burger joint in town, love this place.
Really nice with a very hip atmosphere. The coffee is average, milkshakes are poor (by my very high standards) and the pies are good. Friendly staff.
Oh. My. Gawd. Best burgers for miles. Top coffee, and the hot chocolate is amaze balls. Totally worth having to fight for a table. Finally a good reason to stop in belgrave.
Now I've had a few burgers in my time and i've had really good experiences, really poor ones and the ones that are good one day and rubbish the next.
Decided to give another local cafe/burger shop a crack (been there when it was choc sensation and had a rubbish breaky), always a winner if you can find a decent burger locally!
Myself and 2 friends ordered 3 burgers chips and pop corn chicken.
Burgers: mine was the blast furnace, first impression, the bun, a nice brioche bun that didn't look overly glazed and sweet (good thing) decent size burger as well. Taste good very good, juicy without being too greasy plenty of flavour, pattie little over done (i like em pink) could have done with a bit more oomph in the spice department but again overall really nice and a good mix of ingredients, the bun was pretty much a spot on brioche bun so happy with that.
Standouts:
Pop corn chicken! Yum!
Things to improve:
Serving of sides a little tight, no malt for shakes, alcohol license for some nice local beers to be dropped on tap.
Random thing:
The old newspapers sealed under glass on tables, entertaining read taking a trip back in time.
4/5 for now - will adjust after a second visit for consistency.
We had blacksmiths burger, avocado smash and a big breakfast with a organic orange juice , a pot of monsoons moon tea . Tea is good . I have the say the best amongst our order is the burger. Looks plain but taste juice & flavorful. Love it .
Tried the burgers .. I don't know what the hype is about.. But they are better than the burger shop in Upwey .....
I will wait another month and try them again.
I now wish I had my phone with me but after going for a walk in the Dandenong's I left it elsewhere!
I went for breakfast and the food was good. The service is casual but still polite and that makes it sort of homey, which is a very nice, warm atmosphere. Food arrived reasonably quickly and since they are attached to a bakery the bread is divine. You almost want go to the counter twice - once to order, and then after, to get bread to take home.
All in all, I look forward to going again.
